Bekker s The World Bewitched
Introduction
The World Bewitched (1965) was written by Bekker to outline theological and philosophical
viewpoints that challenged the notion that ghosts, devils, and angels had an influence on historical
events, as well as nature. The story was written at a time when Christianity was being perfected in
England and the rest of Europe. During this time, The World Bewitched (1965) was written, Bekker
served as a minister in Amsterdam. Protestants needed a philosophical and theological approach to
accentuate the assumption that God was the ruler of the world. The need to project God as the
authority while discrediting the influence of ghosts, devils and angels, was necessary so that
Christianity could take root in England and the rest of Europe. ... Show more content on

Through the use of reason, it is possible to reach a conclusion that God created the universe. In the
universe, spirit and matter were distinct entities from one another. Bekker notes that A mind is a
thinking substance and a body an extended one. Bekker adds that Devils are undeniably spirits, and
man is composed of a Body and a spirit. The use of reason to oppose the existence of ghosts and
demons is critical to Bekker. The distinction between the spirit and matter would mean that theology
and philosophy are necessary for discrediting the existence of demons and ghosts. However, it is not
clear whether there is a relationship between matter and spirit. Critics assert that Bekker fails to
explain whether spirits have an influence on the body or whether God has any control over bodies in

Lord Byron And William Shakespeare
Since the beginning of time, human beings have found a variety of ways to illustrate their affections
for one another. An intriguing form to present an individual s ideal thoughts across is the form of
poetry, for it displays a deep and mysterious meaning behind the connotation of the words used.
Poetry allows writers to express themselves through the act of writing with the usage of a few words.
However, it is sometimes difficult for a reader to comprehend what the poem is trying to imply, but
that is the beauty behind poetry which as a reader, one might have a different interpretations from
another. In an analysis of She walks in beauty by Lord Byron and Sonnet 130 by William
Shakespeare, they both have a unique distinction on how the words are used to project affections to
their respective lover. The linguistic style of the poets diverges in their depiction the physical
appearance, emotive feelings, and understanding what the lover means to them. Lord Byron and
William Shakespeare did an incredible job analyzing their counterpart s physical appearance that was
just mind blowing to a reader. Throughout the poem She walks in beauty by Lord Byron, he uses
imagery that allowed him to compare his lover with nature. She walks in beauty, like the night Of
cloudless climes and starry skies, And all that s best of dark and bright Meet in her aspect and her
eyes; Thus mellowed to the tender light Which heaven gaudy day denies (Lines 1 6).
This stanza states that his

Summary Of Mary Wollstonecraft s A Vindication Of Rights...
Mary Wollstonecraft s A Vindication of Rights of Women is a treatise concerning how she views
society in 1792. She observes the oppression of women and the lack of education in society.
Wollstonecraft is saying that men hold more influence over society than. The society, community, life
itself is organized for men to succeed and be successful.[Oppression and Women s History, Linda
Napikoski and Jone Johnson Lewis, 2017]. Women were used to pleasing men and only focus on
dressing nice and staying quiet[Oppression and Women s History, Linda Napikoski and Jone Johnson
Lewis, 2017]. To Wollstonecraft, this is the view of women being under men for everything. Women
are still to this day being oppressed and treated unfairly. Women face issues such as sexual violence,
underpaid, or even getting shamed.( 10 challenges, Ms. Magazine, 2017). Women still experience all
things society but them through but they still impact the world. She wants women to be able to do
things she sees their capable of doing. Wollstonecraft argues that lack of education is the reason
women are in the condition they re in 1792 it s the 2000 and women still face some of these such as

The audit is conducted in accordance with auditing standards and guidelines as issued by the auditing
practices board. Materiality
Materiality is an expression of the relative significance or importance of a particular matter in the
context of the financial statements as whole.
A matter is material if its omission would reasonably influence the decisions of an addressee if the
auditors report; likewise a misstatement is material if it would have a similar influence.
The auditors will normally attempt to set materiality levels at the planning stage of the audit.
The main reason auditors consider materiality at the planning stage is to help them to put audit risk
into context. Risk
Before preparing the audit plan, the auditors should appraise the risk of material errors and regularises
having taken place. (Financial difficulties of the client; known problems with internal controls)

Impact
There is a lack of assurance that the input was properly stated. The amount might be reduced or

A Cordless Drill
Every amateur DIY homeowner and professional contractor should own a cordless drill. A cordless
drill will give the user much greater movement and flexibility. Certainly, the ability to move freely and
unencumbered is very attractive. The fact is that a cordless drill is a real work horse. The device drills
holes of various sizes and drives screws of various sizes into a wide variety of materials. Simply keep
the battery charged and your cordless drill will provide plenty of drilling power through a number of
household projects. Battery power has improved dramatically over the years, thanks to the
introduction of the lithium ion battery that runs for a longer time and lowers your total cost. The new

Knapp Commission Scandal
The Knapp Commission, established in 1970 by New York City Mayer John V. Lindsey (Dempsey
Forst, 2016). The Commission was set up by a committee of five members, to investigate allegations
of police corruption in New York City( Dempsey Forst,2016). After becoming concerned with the
corruption of other officers, two New York City Officers, Frank Serpico and David Durk supplied
information to a New York City reporter, David Burnham (Knapp Commission, n.d.). Burnham wrote
a series of articles that appeared in the New York Times. These reports prompted the establishment of
the Knapp Commission.
Accounts of corruption were mainly prostitution, gambling, and narcotics ( Knapp Commission, n.d.).
It was determined that there two types of corruption, the grass eaters, and man eaters( Dempsey Forst,
2016). The grass eaters were officers that are that do not search for opportunities, however, do not turn
down activities or events that come their way. Officers taking advantage of free meals, movie tickets,
coffee, donuts, or free hotel rooms, do not see this as corruption. It is seen as appreciation for a job
well done. Officers who take advantage of more criminal activities are called man eaters( Dempsey

The Thyroid Gland
HYPERTHYROIDISM GRAVES DISEASE
The thyroid gland is very important in proper functioning of the human body. The hormones it
releases are vital in regulating growth and metabolic reaction. The thyroid gland is relatively small
(about 20g) and is located at the base of the neck, connected to the windpipe and voicebox. Its
structure may be described as butterfly shaped as it is composed of two connected lobes. See image:
The two main hormones secreted by the thyroid gland are tetraiodothyronine (thyroxine or T4) and
triiodothyronine (T3). Both hormones have a peptide structure containing iodine (three atoms in T3
and four in T4).These two hormones regulate growth and development as well as metabolism. They
both speed up the rate of the body s metabolic reactions, which in turn regulates body temperature
(when energy is used in metabolic reactions, heat is released). They aid in growth by stimulating
protein production in all the cells of the body.
The secretion of these hormones is controlled by two other hormones: thyrotropin releasing hormone
(TRH) and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). Thyrotropin releasing hormone is produced by the
hypothalamus when the body needs thyroid hormones for its growth and metabolism. It travels to the
pituitary gland, located just below the hypothalamus, where it causes the secretion of TSH. TSH from
the pituitary travels in the bloodstream to the thyroid gland, where it causes the secretion of thyroid
hormones. When levels of these

Essay on Adolf Hitler and The Nuremberg Race Law
Adolf Hitler was an Austrian man who fought in World War I (WWI) as a German soldier. After
Germany s defeat, Hitler tried to illegally take over the government. He was promptly arrested, and
was sentenced to five years in prison. He only served nine months. In that time, Hitler wrote a book
titled Mein Kampf , whch translates to My Struggle . In Mein Kampf , he speaks of his ideas for
Germany s future, which he titled the Final Solution . After his release, Hitler joined the Nazi party,
and a few years later, he controlled it. He slowly gained power in the German government, and in

Hitler and the rest of the Nazi party created camps to hold, imprison, or kill the undesirables. In
extermination camps, people were herded into gas chambers where they would be gased to death with
Zyklon B. Auschwitz, one of the largest death camps, killed up to 10,000 people per day.
If an undesirable had not been sent to an extermination camp, they d be sent to transit camps,
concentration camps, or labor camps. In these camps, they would do work to aid the war effort or do
hard labor, like digging ditches. Upon arrival, people were stripped of valuables or anything that
individualized them. They had numbers tattooed on their skin for easy recognition. People in these
camps were crowded, starving, and many had contagious diseases that eventually would kill them.
The prisoners were heavily guarded, and if they disobeyed, they would promptly be shot or taken to a
gas chamber. People were selected to move from camp to camp, and they would be transported in
crammped cattle cars. When arriving at new camps, they were often separated from family members,
never to see them again.

Arkansas, families, tribes, dusted out, Caravans, carloads, and homeless. Totals of 20,000, 50,000,
100,000, and 200,000 people. They streamed over the mountains, hungry and restless. We got no place

Although the dirt storms were fewer in 1934, it was the year, which brought the Dust Bowl national
attention. In May, a severe storm blew dirt from Oklahoma, Texas and Kansas as Far as New York
City and Washington D.C. In spite of the terrific storm in May, the year 1934 was pleasant respite
from the blowing dirt and tornadoes of the previous year. But nature had another trick up her sleeve,
the year was extremely hot with new records being made and broken at regular intervals. Before the
year had run its course, hundreds of people in Texas, Colorado, Oklahoma and Kansas had died from
the heat. In 1935, this storm was followed by another and another in rapid succession. A description of
the storm of coming was made by a farmer: The storm caused a tremendous amount of damage and
suffering. A giant dust storm engulfs Boise City. Tremendous winds rolled up to two miles high, and
stretched out a hundred miles with speeds faster than 50 miles per hour. The storms destroyed vast
areas of the Great Plains farmland. The methods of fighting the dust were as many, and varied as were
the means of finding a way to get something to eat and wear. Every possible crack was filled, sheets
were placed over the windows and blankets were hung behind the doors. Often the places were so
tightly plugged against all the dust that the houses became extremely hot and stuffy. The clouds
appeared on the horizons with a thunderous roar. Turbulent dust clouds rolled in

The Italian Renaissance s Life And Life Of Filippo...
Filippo Brunelleschi The Italian Renaissance, ranging between the 1400 s 1600 s, was a time that
continued classicism in culture, art, and architecture. Architecture in particular applied classical
vocabulary and forms to contemporary building functions and types. Many well known individuals
helped shape this period of time, Brunelleschi included. Not much is known about Filippo
Brunelleschi s early life. He was born 1377, the second son of Ser Brunellesco Di Lippo Lapi, in
Florence, Italy. While growing up in a political household, due to his father holding a distinct notary
position, expectations were held high for him to follow the same path as his father. He was even given
a formal education fit for that lifestyle. Though going against expectations, Brunelleschi followed in
his brother s footsteps to become a goldsmith and joined the Silk Merchants guild. It took him a total
of six years to be awarded the title of master. He gained experience not only as a goldsmith but also in
sculpting and mechanics. In 1401, a contested sponsored by the Wool manufacturers Guild was
publicly announced. It called for new bronze panels on the Baptistery doors. Seven candidates entered
the competition but only Filippo Brunelleschi and Lorenzo Ghiberti succeeded in becoming finalists.
Everyone was given the same material and subject, the Sacrifice of Isaac, but their final piece couldn t

Variable Selection Via Penalized Likelihood Plays An...
Variable selection via penalized likelihood plays an important role in statistics and machine learning.
In this paper, we first review some classical methods like AIC, BIC, Mallow s Cp, then discuss some
regularization methods including Lasso, adaptive Lasso, elastic net, adaptive elastic net and group
Lasso. We also consider the application of regularization methods in generalized linear model, Cox s
model and time series analysis. At the end, we give suggestions for future work. 1 Classical Method
The problem of variable selection is always the center of statistical research. Some classical methods
like best subset selection, forward selection and backward elimination are proposed to handing
massive data set. These methods are basically based on the idea of grid search. For example, the best
subset selection searches the optimal model by all possible combination of the predictors. The forward
selection find the best model by adding one predictor at each time, while the backward elimination
finds the best model by removing one predictor at each time. Although these methods are powerful
and accurate, they also cost a lot. For instance, suppose our model has 10 predictors, if we run the best
subset selection to get the optimal model, we need to compare 1024 combinations of the predictors. It
is unrealistic to perform such method in our real life because it time consuming. As a result, more
efficient methods to solve the problem of variable selection are urgently desired. In

Xenotransplantation Research Paper
What if we had the ability to produce organs for dying patients who need them? What if we could save

With xenotransplantation, doctors and medical researchers could have the ability to save patients that
are having organ failure. But what is it? Is it safe? How long have we known about it? Is it ethical
towards society? These are some questions that arise when hearing about xenotransplantation. But by

Lesson Plan for Grade K 5, Language Arts
Prepared by Ms. Katayama, Liberal Studies Major at Chico State University
OVERVIEW PURPOSE
Technology is fluid; constantly changing and improving the way society functions and communicates
with one another. The importance of implementing technology in an academic setting is crucial due to
the modern world being a highly technological economy. Cell phones, computers, ipads, and other
technological instruments have made its way into almost every industry, including the education field,
and will only continue to increase. With a technological device in hand, students are broadening their
learning by being more creative, imaginative, and further engaging their cognitive thinking as opposed
to being restricted to writing with paper and pencil. Statistics show that students that interact with
tablets and computers score higher on tests and overall perform better in the classroom. Therefor,
teachers should do what they can comprehend how these technological devices work and find fun,
creative, lessons for students.
The main purpose of this lesson is to have students successfully create their own scrapbooks by using
descriptions, pictures, and drawings that illustrates what each student is passionate about. Ideas could
be hobbies such as dance, basketball, fishing, rock collections, etc., or volunteering at the local animal
shelter. By using the app, Story Creator, students will interact with either a tablet, ipad,

The Most Iconic Civil Rights Movement Influencers Of All...
To begin my essay, I would like to start off with arguably the most iconic civil rights movement
influencers of all time, Billie Holiday. Eleanora Fagan was born on April 7, 1915 and is from the
Quaker City formally known as Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Eleanora childhood could be best
described as unsteady, at times. During these trying points in her life, Eleanora enjoyed singing along
to records and escape the harsh reality of her life. When she made the move to New York with her
mother around the age of 15, she began to perform at local clubs under the name Billie . After a while
of singing solo, Billie was discovered by producer John Hammond and her career had begun. Holiday

She began to play piano at her father s church for some time. Nina dreamed of becoming a pioneer

she caught the attention of several labels. One of Simones most famous and controversial pieces of art
is the track titles Mississippi Goddam . This track rose to fame by unsettling her relationship with
white listeners but strengthening her position within the civil rights movement. Nina Simones
Mississippi Goddam was a track that the artist wrote following the horrific events that took place in
Mississippi and Alabama. In Mississippi, a prominent civil rights activist named Medgar Evars was
murdered. Meanwhile in Birmingham, Alabama a church was bombed taking the lives of four young
African American women. Enraged, Simone retaliated by doing what she does best, music. She
debuted the song at New York in Carnegie Hall to hundreds of listeners. Simone was destined to bring
the truth of the horrors that occurred to her predominantly white crowd. This song showed great
frustration that Simone held toward the United States much so that in 1970; Simone left the United

Ventromedial Prefrontal Cortex
Structures and Function of the Frontal Lobe
The frontal lobe contains two key structures that have a great impact on mood, behavior and
judgment. These structures are located in the outer area of the cerebrum towards the front of the skull
(Carlson, 2013). This paper will discuss the function and structure of the Ventromedial Prefrontal
Cortex (including the orbitofrontal cortex) and the Dorsolateral Cortex.
The Function of the Ventromedial Prefrontal Cortex
Many studies have concluded that the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (or vmPFC) appears to provide
the inhibition of emotional responses (Carlson, 2013). This region of the brain provides the mind with
the faculties of self restraint or self control.

For example, a study conducted by the University of Iowa College of Medicine found that when this
portion of the brain is damaged, individuals were more susceptible to believing misleading
advertising, thereby triggering the person to make a purchase (Asp et al., 2012). Another study from
the University of Iowa found that damage to the vmPFC seems to be connected with patients who
suffer from drug or gambling additions (Bechara, 2003).
Neurotransmitters Associated with the Ventromedial Prefrontal Cortex
Glutamate and Gamma aminobutyric acid (or GABA) are the main neurotransmitters associated with
this part of the brain. Through the use of magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) researchers have
been able to measure these particular neurotransmitters in order to predict human behavior when it
comes to value guided decision making (Jocham, Hunt, Near, Behrens, 2012).

abortion awareness or to even make it infrequent in non serious cases. The author, Duff Gillespie,
started of this article by explaining to the audience how important and severe abortion is to women.
Gillespie wrote that in the United States, there is a serious debate on women s right to control their
bodies against letting a healthy fetus live. This shouldn t be a serious case because all women do have
the right to control their bodies, but when it comes to a fetus, they have to think twice. Many women
are tremendously having medical issues while pregnant, and in that case they have no absolute control
on their bodies so they will need to officially proceed with an abortion. But On the other hand, other
women are just concerned about body beauty and how it would risk a fetus s life, like gaining a couple
of extra body fat. So I feel that if this debate is recognized, medical or political researchers would
have to consider it intensely. The increase in abortion is developing a world foreign assistance. This
United States was listed as one of the main health donor in these situations.

In the case against Sage Rent A Car the defendant filed a surety bond with the superintendent of
insurance when it incorporated. Therefore, the court should dismiss the suit against Sage Rent A Car
for failing to state a claim under rule NMRA 1 012B(6). Also under section 66 5 207(E) (1988) of the
New Mexico Financial Responsibility Act states, a motor vehicle approved as a self insured by the
superintendent of insurance is exempt from the act. Therefore, the defendant is not liable for any
damages due to filing a surety bond with the New Mexico superintendent and for being self insured.
Lastly, under New Mexico case law Las Lumarias of the N.M Council v. Isengard, 92 N.M 297, 300
301 (Ct. App. 1978) the court held a motion to dismiss due to the plaintiff not being able to recover or

provided and case law the defendant Sage Rent A Car is not liable for damages per the New Mexico

Analysis Of Budgets Lie At The Core Of Every Business...
Introduction Budgets lie at the core of every business practice. The tools are the major evaluators of
managerial effectiveness and overall organizational performance. Businesses can achieve effective
control and planning through the application of the right budgeting approaches in financial and
accounting activities. Nonetheless, these benefits can only be realized if the managers of a company
use the most effective models that take into account all relevant factors, which influence a firm s
budget. An inefficient method automatically leads to attainment of poor results. In this light,
practitioners in the financial and accounting sectors evaluate different budgeting techniques in terms
of efficiency, flexibility, accurate results, and ease of use. One of the approaches that attract immense
criticism in respect to these considerations is the traditional budgeting approach. It is, therefore,
essential to look into the reasons as to why the model has been criticized as a rigid method that should
be eliminated (Zeller Metzger 2013). Weaknesses of Traditional Budgeting Traditional budgeting
model is not a new concept in business practice. Its application goes beyond the contemporary
practices that have seen the development of new techniques. The model dates back to the onset of
1920s when the managers of the industrial revolution realized the need to control costs and the cash
flows of a firm. Horvath and Sauter (2004) define the model as a quantitative expression of a

Essay on The World Is Too Much for Us
In William Wordsworth s The World is Too Much With Us, this poem heeds warning to his generation.
This warning is that they are losing sight of what is actually important in this world: nature and God.
To some people both of these are the same thing ...as if lacking appreciation for the natural gifts of
God is not sin enough, we add to it the insult of pride for our rape of His land (Wordsworth). With his
words, Wordsworth makes this message perpetual and everlasting. William Wordsworth loved nature
and based many of his poems on it. He uses very strong diction to get his point and feelings across.
This poem expresses Wordsworth s feeling about nature and religion containing a melodic rhythm
(Wordsworth). Each line and each ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These lines (5 7) suggest that nature is helpless and unknown to the destruction man is doing. For this,
for everything, we are out of tune; (8) proposes that even in the spectacle of a storm, human beings
(adults) look on uncaringly implying that we, humans, don t realize the damage we are inflicting on
helpless nature (Wordsworth). The symbolism created by the images and metaphors represent
Wordsworth s deep passion about the conflict between nature and modern progress. Images and
metaphors alluding to mankind s greed, nature s innocence, and the speaker s rejection of accepted
principles all serve to illustrate the speaker s passion to save his generation (Gill). The final part, the
sestet, Wordsworth wishes that he were a pagan (a heathen) raised according to a different vision of
the world, so that, standing on this pleasant lea (Nicholas), he might see images of ancient gods rising
from the waves, a sight that would cheer him greatly. He wishes he had faith in ancient gods of nature
to extract revenge on people. Wordsworth imagines Proteus rising from the sea (Nicholas), and Triton
blowing his wreathed horn (Nicholas). His dream of these ancient gods of the sea would save nature
from man. Wordsworth, in the sestet, dramatically proposes an impossible personal solution to his
problem—he wishes he could have been born and raised as a pagan, so he could still see ancient gods

Essay about The Genius that Was Pythagoras
What makes a person considered a genius? All of our opinions are different on what we think a genius
is. For example, Einstein and Mozart were both considered geniuses but Mozart s talent came
naturally where as Einstein had mentors help him along the way. Pythagoras was known as the first
pure mathematician. So was Pythagoras considered a genius? Pythagoras was most well known for
what we know today as the Pythagorean Theorem and also that the sum of all the angles in a triangle
is equal to two right angles. This is my reasoning on why I think Pythagoras was not considered what
we think a genius is. Pythagoras was born around 569 BC on the island of Samos, Greece. When he
was older he went to Crotone and this is where Pythagoras founded ... Show more content on

These are some more things that Pythagoras was credited for: The sum of all the angles on a triangle is
equal to two right angles, constructing figures of a given area and geometrical algebra, finding of
irrational numbers, the five regular solids, and that Earth was a sphere in the middle of the Universe.
So, by the information above you would probably think that Pythagoras was considered a genius. Plus
some of the things he was credited for were very unlikely that he even did them. For example the five
regular solids (Tetrahedron, Cube, Octahedron, Icosahedron, and Dodecahedron) that he was credited
for he only knew how to construct the first 3 above and not the icosahedron and the dodecahedron.
(Douglass) Also his discovery of irrational numbers was highly unlikely due to his philosophy of all
things are numbers and numbers to Pythagoras were the ratio of two whole numbers. So overall , I
think Pythagoras was a very intelligent man. Pythagoras had to be very bright to be the master of the
Pythagorean School and have one of his students be Plato, a famous Greek philosopher. But was he a
genius? I think the Pythagorean Theorem was a genius theory and the Babylonians in Mesopotamia
who did the theory first should be considered geniuses, but not Pythagoras. I think this way mainly
because

President Johnson s Social Reform
For hundred of years, women have strived for equality with men. In fact, many argue to this day,
women across the globe are treated as second class citizens. Countless studies have been conducted by
independent universities and groups supporting this ideology. Statistics from these institutions have
often brought women to the Civil Rights forefront, during a time period when women s suffrage was
in its second wave. Advocacy for this cause has come in the form of much more than field studies and
collected research. Lyndon Johnson s social reform was greatly successful in providing equality for
women through new legislation and his support of the National Organization for Women. To
understand President Johnson s social reform, it is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Women have always been portrayed as inferior to men, a myth that can be traced back to Christian
theology during the 4th century. A 13th century theologian, said that woman was created to be man s
helpmeet, but her unique role is in conception . . . since for other purposes men would be better
assisted by other men. (Women 1) Even during the 1960 s, the antiquated idea that a woman was
inferior to a man was widely accepted. It wasn t until approximately 40 years prior to the 1960 s that
woman acquired freedom and mobility thanks to the automobile industry. Legislation was also
evolving as a whole. It was becoming more and more ambitious, and achieved to solve issues in the
country very quickly. Prior to Lyndon Johnson s presidency was that of John F. Kennedy. President
Kennedy proposed the most ambitious plan since the New Deal, entitled the New Frontier . The New
Frontier targeted social injustices in the United States, dealing with racism and sexism. Some
hypothesize that this legislation influenced President Johnson to further pursue social issues that
plagued the United States. Through pursuing these issues, Lyndon Johnson would close the widening
gap between men and women. President Johnson was extremely driven to push for more equal rights.
He was inspired by the creation of the Equal Pay Act of 1963. Prior to this act, men and women who
were performing the same jobs were not earning equal wages. The argument was that men

Essay on Ragtime and Blues Influence on Jazz

October 14, 2011
Seeing Ragtime and Blues as Parents of Jazz Jazz is a music genre that has complex characteristics
and history of development and thus many musicians and scholars face troubles in defining what jazz
is. In general, jazz is believed to have born in New Orleans. Jazz developed for the pleasure of the
social dancers. According to the Understanding Jazz: What Is Jazz? of John F. Kennedy center for the
Performing Arts, Jazz was created mainly by Afro Americans, and had elements of European and Afro
American culture. Also, it emphasizes few elements of Jazz, which are swing feel, syncopation, and
improvisation. These different culture and elements of jazz may be explained by how jazz ... Show

Thus the similarity between ragtime and blues is significant but there are numerous differences
between the two music styles. First, their origin was different. Even though they both had African
influence as mentioned, ragtime was more strongly influenced by European music style, and blues
was heavily African music style. According to Durk Sutro in his book Jazz for Dummies, Ragtime was
European influenced, in the sense that it was composed, not improvised, and featured carefully crafted
melodies and harmonies...ragtime could sound concisely European (ch.5). Although European
influenced, there is some African influence such as rhythm and African banjo music as mentioned
during the lecture. Ragtime rhythm was the rhythms of the black dancers who used their heels to make
drum sounds, or to that of the black church singers who could vary the rhythms of a Christian hymn so
much that a white Christian could not even recognize it (Tirro, pp.37).
On the other hand, Blues were basically from work songs of African Americans slaves at the time. It is
a native American music, the product of the black man in this country, or, to put it more exactly the
way I have come to think about it, blues could not exist if the African captives had not become
American captives (pp.17), said Jones and Baraka. In Jazz A History, Frank Tirro wisely analyzes and
explains the relationship between the unique background and

Strange Fruit Ap Essay
Although Strange Fruit and The Summer I was Sixteen have extremely different tones and depict
images that seem nothing alike, they both have an underlying theme of discrimination and inequality.
Throughout history we have seen the bizarre way humans treat other other humans. Acts from a group
of humans towards another can range from violent to more mild, yet still harmful acts. Usually these
acts are based on differences in outward appearance, from the color of a person s skin to the gender of
a person. These two poems portray the idea that racism and sexism can be both blatant and subtle.
In the first couple lines of Strange Fruit by Abel Meeropol the tone of the poem is immediately set.

One signigicant simularity between sesism and rasicosm is the role that they play in classism, a system
our country has has throughout history. Classism is the systematic assignment of characteristics of
worth and ability based on social class. It includes individual attitudes and behaviors systems of
policies and practices that are set up to benefit the upper classes at the expense of the lower classes.
This results in drastic wealth inequality; the rationale that supports these systems and this unequal
valuing; and the culture that perpetuates them. It is prejudice, discrimination, mistreatment, neglect of
or lack of respect for any human and their rational needs based on people s socioeconomic class.
Classism is held in place by a system of beliefs and cultural attitudes that ranks people according to
economic status, family lineage, job status, level of education, and other divisions. Higher class people
are seen as smarter as and more articulate than poor people. In this way, dominant group members
define for everyone else what is normal or acceptable in the class hierarchy. Both women and African
Americans are seen as weaker, less intelligent, and therefore are pout in a lower class

A Comparative Study Of The Status Of Women
The declaring of 1975 85 decade as the International Women s decade also gave impetus to women s
movements for removing the notion of inferiority of women and giving them a sense of identity. The
Central Social Welfare Board (CSWB) established by the Government of India in 1953, also promotes
and strengthens volunteer efforts for the welfare of women. The Ministry of Welfare, Government of
India, too, gives grants to voluntary organizations for activities like construction/expansion of hostels
for working women in cities. The analysis of six types of movements suggests that movements are
generally initiated and spread by charismatic leaders or by political parties and religious organizations.
In the former case, the ideologies are transmitted downwards while in the latter case, these are
transmitted upwards. Once any movement based on certain ideology changes, it is not necessary that it
will spread in the course of time, it can gain in strength and it can also lose its vitality either because it
is considered irrelevant or because it is suppressed by the government. Comparative Study of the
status of Women in the Period of Pre and post Independence: If we will examine the status of women
and distinguish the position of women in the post independence period with the pre independence
period, we must be in a confuse state of mind that we are moving towards the development or
declining the opposition of women. If we will critically examine the status of women, the impact and

Fidel Castro Influence
Fidel Castro is one of most famous communist dictators that ruled Cuba from 1959 to 2008 and made
Cuba the first communist country in the Western hemisphere. Castro is most known for his time in
power where the relations between Cuba and the U.S. were completely severed, which caused a
complete trade embargo between the two countries and almost resulted in nuclear war during the
Cuban Missile Crisis. Some scholars believe that Castro always sought out good relations with the
U.S, but it was through U.S. aggression that Castro was radicalized into communism and allied with

the people of the revolution were the workers and peasants that were exploited by the United States.
Also, in Castro s speech History Will Absolve Me, Castro already developed and laid down five

Castro s writings in 1953 matched his writings later on about his formative years. This shows that in

  • 2. Bekker s The World Bewitched Introduction The World Bewitched (1965) was written by Bekker to outline theological and philosophical viewpoints that challenged the notion that ghosts, devils, and angels had an influence on historical events, as well as nature. The story was written at a time when Christianity was being perfected in England and the rest of Europe. During this time, The World Bewitched (1965) was written, Bekker served as a minister in Amsterdam. Protestants needed a philosophical and theological approach to accentuate the assumption that God was the ruler of the world. The need to project God as the authority while discrediting the influence of ghosts, devils and angels, was necessary so that Christianity could take root in England and the rest of Europe. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Through the use of reason, it is possible to reach a conclusion that God created the universe. In the universe, spirit and matter were distinct entities from one another. Bekker notes that A mind is a thinking substance and a body an extended one. Bekker adds that Devils are undeniably spirits, and man is composed of a Body and a spirit. The use of reason to oppose the existence of ghosts and demons is critical to Bekker. The distinction between the spirit and matter would mean that theology and philosophy are necessary for discrediting the existence of demons and ghosts. However, it is not clear whether there is a relationship between matter and spirit. Critics assert that Bekker fails to explain whether spirits have an influence on the body or whether God has any control over bodies in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Lord Byron And William Shakespeare Since the beginning of time, human beings have found a variety of ways to illustrate their affections for one another. An intriguing form to present an individual s ideal thoughts across is the form of poetry, for it displays a deep and mysterious meaning behind the connotation of the words used. Poetry allows writers to express themselves through the act of writing with the usage of a few words. However, it is sometimes difficult for a reader to comprehend what the poem is trying to imply, but that is the beauty behind poetry which as a reader, one might have a different interpretations from another. In an analysis of She walks in beauty by Lord Byron and Sonnet 130 by William Shakespeare, they both have a unique distinction on how the words are used to project affections to their respective lover. The linguistic style of the poets diverges in their depiction the physical appearance, emotive feelings, and understanding what the lover means to them. Lord Byron and William Shakespeare did an incredible job analyzing their counterpart s physical appearance that was just mind blowing to a reader. Throughout the poem She walks in beauty by Lord Byron, he uses imagery that allowed him to compare his lover with nature. She walks in beauty, like the night Of cloudless climes and starry skies, And all that s best of dark and bright Meet in her aspect and her eyes; Thus mellowed to the tender light Which heaven gaudy day denies (Lines 1 6). This stanza states that his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The Thyroid Gland HYPERTHYROIDISM GRAVES DISEASE The thyroid gland is very important in proper functioning of the human body. The hormones it releases are vital in regulating growth and metabolic reaction. The thyroid gland is relatively small (about 20g) and is located at the base of the neck, connected to the windpipe and voicebox. Its structure may be described as butterfly shaped as it is composed of two connected lobes. See image: The two main hormones secreted by the thyroid gland are tetraiodothyronine (thyroxine or T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). Both hormones have a peptide structure containing iodine (three atoms in T3 and four in T4).These two hormones regulate growth and development as well as metabolism. They both speed up the rate of the body s metabolic reactions, which in turn regulates body temperature (when energy is used in metabolic reactions, heat is released). They aid in growth by stimulating protein production in all the cells of the body. The secretion of these hormones is controlled by two other hormones: thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH) and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). Thyrotropin releasing hormone is produced by the hypothalamus when the body needs thyroid hormones for its growth and metabolism. It travels to the pituitary gland, located just below the hypothalamus, where it causes the secretion of TSH. TSH from the pituitary travels in the bloodstream to the thyroid gland, where it causes the secretion of thyroid hormones. When levels of these ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. The Italian Renaissance s Life And Life Of Filippo... Filippo Brunelleschi The Italian Renaissance, ranging between the 1400 s 1600 s, was a time that continued classicism in culture, art, and architecture. Architecture in particular applied classical vocabulary and forms to contemporary building functions and types. Many well known individuals helped shape this period of time, Brunelleschi included. Not much is known about Filippo Brunelleschi s early life. He was born 1377, the second son of Ser Brunellesco Di Lippo Lapi, in Florence, Italy. While growing up in a political household, due to his father holding a distinct notary position, expectations were held high for him to follow the same path as his father. He was even given a formal education fit for that lifestyle. Though going against expectations, Brunelleschi followed in his brother s footsteps to become a goldsmith and joined the Silk Merchants guild. It took him a total of six years to be awarded the title of master. He gained experience not only as a goldsmith but also in sculpting and mechanics. In 1401, a contested sponsored by the Wool manufacturers Guild was publicly announced. It called for new bronze panels on the Baptistery doors. Seven candidates entered the competition but only Filippo Brunelleschi and Lorenzo Ghiberti succeeded in becoming finalists. In this paper, we first review some classical methods like AIC, BIC, Mallow s Cp, then discuss some regularization methods including Lasso, adaptive Lasso, elastic net, adaptive elastic net and group Lasso. We also consider the application of regularization methods in generalized linear model, Cox s model and time series analysis. At the end, we give suggestions for future work. 1 Classical Method The problem of variable selection is always the center of statistical research. Some classical methods like best subset selection, forward selection and backward elimination are proposed to handing massive data set. These methods are basically based on the idea of grid search. For example, the best subset selection searches the optimal model by all possible combination of the predictors. The forward selection find the best model by adding one predictor at each time, while the backward elimination finds the best model by removing one predictor at each time. Although these methods are powerful and accurate, they also cost a lot. For instance, suppose our model has 10 predictors, if we run the best subset selection to get the optimal model, we need to compare 1024 combinations of the predictors. It is unrealistic to perform such method in our real life because it time consuming. As a result, more efficient methods to solve the problem of variable selection are urgently desired. In ... The importance of implementing technology in an academic setting is crucial due to the modern world being a highly technological economy. Cell phones, computers, ipads, and other technological instruments have made its way into almost every industry, including the education field, and will only continue to increase. With a technological device in hand, students are broadening their learning by being more creative, imaginative, and further engaging their cognitive thinking as opposed to being restricted to writing with paper and pencil. Statistics show that students that interact with tablets and computers score higher on tests and overall perform better in the classroom. Therefor, teachers should do what they can comprehend how these technological devices work and find fun, creative, lessons for students. The main purpose of this lesson is to have students successfully create their own scrapbooks by using descriptions, pictures, and drawings that illustrates what each student is passionate about. The tools are the major evaluators of managerial effectiveness and overall organizational performance. Businesses can achieve effective control and planning through the application of the right budgeting approaches in financial and accounting activities. Nonetheless, these benefits can only be realized if the managers of a company use the most effective models that take into account all relevant factors, which influence a firm s budget. An inefficient method automatically leads to attainment of poor results. In this light, practitioners in the financial and accounting sectors evaluate different budgeting techniques in terms of efficiency, flexibility, accurate results, and ease of use. One of the approaches that attract immense criticism in respect to these considerations is the traditional budgeting approach. It is, therefore, essential to look into the reasons as to why the model has been criticized as a rigid method that should be eliminated (Zeller Metzger 2013). Weaknesses of Traditional Budgeting Traditional budgeting model is not a new concept in business practice. Its application goes beyond the contemporary practices that have seen the development of new techniques. Pythagoras was most well known for what we know today as the Pythagorean Theorem and also that the sum of all the angles in a triangle is equal to two right angles. So, by the information above you would probably think that Pythagoras was considered a genius. Plus some of the things he was credited for were very unlikely that he even did them. For example the five regular solids (Tetrahedron, Cube, Octahedron, Icosahedron, and Dodecahedron) that he was credited for he only knew how to construct the first 3 above and not the icosahedron and the dodecahedron. • 33. Strange Fruit Ap Essay Although Strange Fruit and The Summer I was Sixteen have extremely different tones and depict images that seem nothing alike, they both have an underlying theme of discrimination and inequality. Throughout history we have seen the bizarre way humans treat other other humans. Acts from a group of humans towards another can range from violent to more mild, yet still harmful acts. Usually these acts are based on differences in outward appearance, from the color of a person s skin to the gender of a person. These two poems portray the idea that racism and sexism can be both blatant and subtle. In the first couple lines of Strange Fruit by Abel Meeropol the tone of the poem is immediately set. The tone, as shown in line 2, Blood on the leaves ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 36. A Comparative Study Of The Status Of Women The declaring of 1975 85 decade as the International Women s decade also gave impetus to women s movements for removing the notion of inferiority of women and giving them a sense of identity. The Central Social Welfare Board (CSWB) established by the Government of India in 1953, also promotes and strengthens volunteer efforts for the welfare of women. The Ministry of Welfare, Government of India, too, gives grants to voluntary organizations for activities like construction/expansion of hostels for working women in cities. The analysis of six types of movements suggests that movements are generally initiated and spread by charismatic leaders or by political parties and religious organizations. In the former case, the ideologies are transmitted downwards while in the latter case, these are transmitted upwards. Once any movement based on certain ideology changes, it is not necessary that it will spread in the course of time, it can gain in strength and it can also lose its vitality either because it is considered irrelevant or because it is suppressed by the government. • 39. Fidel Castro Influence Fidel Castro is one of most famous communist dictators that ruled Cuba from 1959 to 2008 and made Cuba the first communist country in the Western hemisphere. Castro is most known for his time in power where the relations between Cuba and the U.S. were completely severed, which caused a complete trade embargo between the two countries and almost resulted in nuclear war during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Some scholars believe that Castro always sought out good relations with the U.S, but it was through U.S. aggression that Castro was radicalized into communism and allied with the Soviet Union whereas the other position held by scholars believe that Castro always planned to sever relations with the U.S. in order to nationalize the Cuban economy. ...
