Paul s Dehumanization In All Quiet On The Western Front
In All Quiet on the Western Front, the Great War emotionally destroys Paul through the
dehumanization of the soldiers. Throughout the book, thoughts of his future, desperation for life, and
coping with his actions crushes him psychologically. Therefore Paul gains realization of the reality of
the war; he soon loses everyone he has gained emotional attachment to during the time he serves and
is unable to cope with the loss of all his companions. This disturbs him far more than the physical
wounds in battle.
From the beginning Paul has many doubts about his life after the war. Compared to the older men, he
had no career or love to hopefully reunite with. As he imagines a life away from the violence, he
realizes these boys entered the war before ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These boys were motivated by nationalism and false propaganda about the heroic nature of the war. As
they began to understand the uselessness of the soldiers sacrifices, Paul s comrades develop a
bitterness towards the system. Especially after seeing their German leader, they question the
government s intentions. Their innocence was manipulated to benefit political officials with no
consideration for each individual life that is affected by the war.
Psychologically Paul is greatly affected by his experiences in the war and is unable to express his time
there. He has escaped any major injury during the most violent parts of the war. However after all his
companions are killed in duty, he is restless and loses the desire to live. Paul was set free from the
emotional turmoil when he dies; the physical pain no longer affects him. Ironically, he dies on an all
quiet western front after seeing the terror behind the country s nationalism.
Paul escaped serious physical wounds; however, he is completely destroyed by the effects of the war.
After being mercilessly attacked with gas, he sees the brutality and lack of concern for the soldiers
lives. Although he is continuously pressured by authority figures to see the opposing fighter as the
main enemy, Paul understands the problem goes beyond killing other men. The war tears Paul apart
and leaves him scarred by the lack of

Analysis of the Research Process in a recently published Business Research Study
Abstract The purpose of this paper is to analyze a recently conducted business research study in a
view to assess whether the researcher has followed all the basic and essential steps of the Business
Research Process or not. A Formal business research report starts with a brief introduction to the topic
and clearly defines the Statement of the problem. In the subsequent sections, a comprehensive
literature review is presented to give some background knowledge and explain the topic in the light of
relevant past research studies (Sekaran Bougie, 2010). The researcher proceeds with defining his
population, sample size, and methodology for his research study. Afterwards, he develops hypotheses
and uses different analytical and statistical tools to draw results and present his final conclusion
(Saunders, Lewis, Thornhill, 2006). The research study under analysis was conducted by Salim
Darmadi in Indonesia to analyze the relationship between the placement of females in the
Management Board of a firm and the financial performance of that firm. The researcher has reviewed
a number of articles and research studies from relevant Business, Economics, and Management
journals. The paper contains a detailed background and supporting knowledge in the Literature review
section. The author has used different regression models to analyze the dependent and independent
variables involved in his

The Concept Of Self And Selflessness
The concept of self and selflessness is prime to all Indian philosophies. Two of India s most popular
religious systems, Jainism and Buddhism, teach renunciation of the self in order to reach Samadhi and
Dharma (i.e. enlightenment, breaking free from the cycle of rebirth and correct living) (Collins, 1990).
While Jainism vehemently espouses denial of self, both as an ideological concept and as a tangible
reality, Buddhism teaches renunciation of self by way of still using the self as a vehicle for such
understanding. While this may seem paradoxical, Buddhism uses the Four Noble Truths to espouse
how the mind and sensory system can be used by the budding Buddhist to learn that the
phantasmagorical and phenomenological aspects of the world are truly illusory. In this sense, Jainism
represents absolutist denial of the self while Buddhism represents paradoxical renunciation of the self
by way of utilizing the self towards understanding the porous nature and falseness of such a construct.
Thus, many Indian philosophies take the denial of the self as a prime tenet of life. However, the
gradations between such systems are intriguing, as is the case with Jainism and Buddhism. The
religious and philosophical system of Jainism defines the self as a flimsy and false construct that acts
as a liaison between the dense matter of the body and the immortal and perfect aspect of the soul
residing within the body. The self holds true to the concept of samsara (i.e. transmigration, rebirth

The Representation of Miss Emily as an Extended Metaphor...
The Representation of Miss Emily as an Extended Metaphor in Faulkner s A Rose for Emily
The short story, A Rose for Emily, took place in the southern town of Jefferson sometime in the
beginning of the twentieth century. One could say that Miss Emily lived and died under certain
circumstances that could compare to how the Confederacy lived and died as a result of the Civil War.
Miss Emily could represent an extended metaphor for the Old South and its traditions and customs.
Faulkner wrote her character and her appearance, the town, her relationship with the world, and even
her home, to reflect the social background of the Old South, as defined as the time period between the
Colonial Era and Reconstruction.
Emily is a person that with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An example that furthers this conclusion is the concept of Emily having to pay taxes, and her refusal
to do so; the North imposed taxes that the South did not wish to have to pay just like Miss Emily and
the town of Jefferson.
Emily s appearance somewhat fell from over the years. She used to be a beautiful woman in her
prime, but when the deputy went to her house to ask her about paying taxes, she looked much
different than before she closed herself up into her house. In that aspect, Emily could be a metaphor
for the appearance of the South during its decline. During war, the North started total warfare; the total
destruction of the South. In events such as Sherman s March to the sea, the Union Soldiers destroyed a
lot of the South. Emily appears to be a ruin of what she once was, just as the South looked beautiful
before war and messy during the Reconstruction period. The same unkemptness and change from
magnificent to unsightly could be said about her house as well. Miss Emily stays in the confines of her
own home for a number of years after her father s death. The only contact she has is with her servant
who takes care of her by getting groceries and helping her around the house. Her isolation from the
world is due to the fact that she cannot accept the fact that her father is dead, for he was all she had in
the first place. This reflects

High Impulsivity And Novelty Seeking Drugs
The article, High Impulsivity Predicts the Switch to Compulsive Cocaine Talking, sought to determine
whether impulsivity and novelty seeking (which are behavioral markers of addictive drugs) place
individuals in the vulnerability of compulsive seeking of the drug. The researchers used laboratory rats
to test the vulnerability. Researchers found that high reactivity to novelty predicted the likelihood of
rats seeking cocaine self administration. However, high impulsivity seemed to predict the
development of addiction like behavior in the laboratory rats. The results obtained by researchers has
changed the perspective from the impulsivity aspect of drug use towards the compulsivity factor
during the initial stages of addiction development. Interestingly, the compulsive factor can be
generated through neural physiology (i.e. neural mechanisms or diminished function of cortical
function).
In terms of lecture material, as discussed, drugs (such as stimulants) produce a hedonic state in
individuals that leads them to greater drug use. The sensation of false euphoria can be what drives
individuals who actively seek the drug. This can make drug users to impulsively seek drugs. As stated
in the article, their evidence demonstrated that high levels of impulsivity can come before the onset of
compulsive drug use.
As discussed in lecture, although cocaine and caffeine are considered to be both stimulants, their
effects are very different. There is a particular mechanism of biological

Globalization and Higher Living Standards
Globalization is spawning a rise in living standards
The main focus in this article is to illustrate how globalization has improved the lives of many in
developing nations. Globalization in of its self is the trading of goods and services of a local economy
into an integrated global economy. Technological advances have made this practice more feasible with
in the last 50 years. The major milestones were the development of the internet and increased
transportation technology. These two advances made the world coined flat and set the stage for higher
living standards. Countries such as Asia and Latin America have really harnessed these technology
advances. They have been exporting their products and services on to the world wide ... Show more

business not only cuts cost for the companies it demotes the corruption and violence accompanied
with most poverty torn nations.
Globalization allows for countries and cultures to share its products and services to the rest of the
world. As I walk thru my house I have products from the entire globe. You no longer have to travel to
remote locations to pick up unique items. Having products that I love from around the world
personally strengthens my standard of living. I feel as though im a part of something larger that just
American culture or what I like to refer as Californication. The thought of buying something from a
foreign country, especially a developing nation brings a warm feeling inside my body knowing I did a
small part in helping globalize the world. The spread of cultures through globalization allows for a
melting pot of products and services. It allows us to connect with people from 1,000 of miles away
and support economies from all over the globe. Globalization is not harming poor countries.

positions to observe the staff members so they are able to provide feedback. They make every effort to
catch the good behaviors so they can provide recognition and boost the employee s morale but they
are also willing to provide developmental feedback when necessary. The manager informed me that
this approach works for their company because it creates a fun and positive environment and the
employees know they will always be treated fairly (Thomas, 2010). The shipping company had a
completely different manner of operation because of the business they were in. The manager informed
me that their company is more focused on working fast and efficient. The company s goal is to deliver
packages before deadlines and they train their employees to execute all their operations in the same
manner. The company gives the employees goals and deadlines for every aspect of their job. For
example, they have a specific time that they have to report to work, stock the delivery truck, inspect
the truck and deliver packages. The company makes everything time bound and the employees are

Compromise of 1850
At the time of the creation of the Constitution, the issue of slavery had been put off and avoided, a
decision that would later lead to the controversy now known as the American Civil War. The
composition, which was once the solution to problems that the Union was having, had the opposite
effect in the 1850s, when arguments and different interpretations of the Constitution resulted in
sectionalism, threat of secession, and tension between the North and the South. Abolitionists in the
North tried to preserve the Union while abolishing slavery, while southerners supported slavery in the
new territory and threatened to secede; the Compromise of 1850, especially the Fugitive Slave Law,
increased these beliefs. The Compromise of 1850 brought ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This man also believed in popular sovereignty, meaning the people should choose whether or not they
want to spread it. This account contradicts Document E and Emerson s views. The government was
unable to come to a compromise so that both sides would be satisfied, hence the sectionalism. The
Constitution s lack of mentioning slavery and the misinterpretations of it made it become a source of
sectional discord rather than an instrument of national unity. President James Buchanan was known to
favor the south, which is evident in his fourth annual message to Congress in 1860, as seen in
Document G. President Buchanan deals with the fact that the states were sovereign, therefore having
the right to manage slavery in their own way. He also states that the states, particularly the South, had
the right to resist the government if all peaceful measures to restore unity did not work. He also makes
the point that Congress is by no means of the Constitution given the power to use force against the
states to prevent secession. He suggests three amendments that elucidate the protection of slavery and
that could help avoid sectionalism within the Union. Poor political decisions contributed the fail of the
Union along with the Constitution. One that would fall under this category is the Kansas Nebraska

Examples Of Dichotomy In Beowulf
Beowulf: a Wonderful Example of Dichotomies in Literature
In the epic poem Beowulf, characters with vast differences and similarities appear and blend together
to foil each other to make for a very interesting read. Many examples of dichotomies exist in the
multitude of characters introduced throughout the poem. One of the most prevalent examples is
demonstrated by the relationship between Beowulf and Grendel. There are varying dichotomies that
continuously show up throughout the poem, and Beowulf and Grendel embody several themes that
overlap with one another. The most evident dichotomy is good versus evil, but other dichotomies
displayed align with the overarching theme of good versus evil, such as bravery versus cowardice, and
dark versus light. This essay focuses on bravery versus cowardice as a theme for the main characters
Beowulf and Grendel, but this dichotomy is also demonstrated by other characters such as Wiglaf and
the other soldiers because of their fear of the dragon, and when Beowulf s soldiers stay with him to
help fight Grendel despite not really having a chance to beat him. ... Show more content on

are the adjacent types to your core type. Each person has two wings but the balance between these two
to the core type varies from person to person. The wings may be more potent than the core. They may
be hidden or be proportioned. The wings exist to introduce a person s alternate self or his other side.
Wings may improve the core personality or contradict it completely. The whole idea of wings merely
points out that personality fluctuate and explain how a person may does not act consistently.
The Arrows From the diagram shown before, we find arrowheads at the end of the line. In the
Enneagram, there are arrows of integration and disintegration. Integration, as defined in a dictionary,
is the idea of blending something into a whole while disintegration duly means the opposite.
Arrows like the wings affect the core personality type only that arrows are triggered with the person s
state of mind or stress level. When stressed, as strained or due to certain circumstances leaves the
mind in tumultuous bearings, the person would exhibit the arrow of disintegration or the type which
points to your core type. Here, a person acquires the sin of the arrow or the negative attributes of that
type. This is why the arrow of disintegration is also referred to as the negative arrow. For the arrow of
integration, a person is calm or relaxed in his present state

Jason Terwiliger, a new member of the finance committee at the Windshore Country Club, recently
found some problems with the financing of the F B outlets. His upscale restaurant in the city is
extremely successful, and he hopes to bring some helpful ideas to the Windshore Country Club s F B
operations on the outskirts of the city. One main concern Jason has is all of the differences in the 4 F B
outlets and that they all come out of the same kitchen. He says that the club s food cost is at 42%
while his restaurant is at 28%, which is a huge difference. Steve should respond to this concern by

He points out that the chef must make about 6 ducks early in the day to prepare the meal in case
someone orders it, but often that food is thrown away and wasted. Steve should inform Jason that this
may be more uncommon in the restaurant field, but in clubs, specialty dishes that are prepared daily
are very common and also expected by members who want the best food they can receive. One way to
eliminate such a high food waste for Steve may be to prepare less duck each day, and if they run out
they have other high quality dishes to replace them. Another issue was the use of all fresh ingredients.
Jason appreciates the quality of food but also states that frozen ingredients can offer nearly the same
quality for some foods for much less of a cost. Depending on the quality of the country club and how
exclusive they are, Steve may tell Jason that they can only use fresh ingredients in their kitchen, but
may also take him up on his idea and incorporate some frozen foods in certain dishes. Maybe dishes
not as large, like appetizers or fast food outlets, could use frozen foods more often to cut

Topic of research: The effect of dietary nitrates on weight maintenance in obese population following

TITLE
The effect of dietary nitrates on weight maintenance in obese population following a 10% weight loss
BACKGROUND
Dietary nitrates are inorganic inert anionic compounds in fruits, vegetables and cured meats. About 80
85% of the nitrate in our diets is derived from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We hypothesize the nitrate to have significant implication on the post weight loss RMR and possibly
cause relapsing of the weight loss.
STUDY DESIGN AND OUTCOMES
A 6 month randomized three way crossover trial consisting of three groups: 20 healthy, 20 obese, and
20 mixed participants (placebo group for nitrate supplementation)is proposed. All groups will be
screened for thyroid function, hepatitis A B and HIV).All participants will be kept on a low nitrate
weight maintenance diet formula till the weight remains constant for 2 weeks (weight change 10 g/d).
RMR is measured using indirect calorimetry. They are then fed a hypocaloric diet(800 kcal/d) until a
10% weight loss is achieved(estimated time 12 weeks).RMR and weight is measured again. The
formula diet is reinstated and 0.1mmol/kg/d inorganic nitrate for a period of 3 weeks is given along
with it to the two groups excluding the placebo group. RMR, plasma and salivary nitrite levels and
weight changes are recorded.
SIGNIFICANCE
The only study on effect of nitrates on RMR was on healthy humans and no study has been done to
study their effect on weight maintenance. Obesity is a serious condition and long term maintenance of
target weight by obese individuals is not very successful(Wing Phelan, 2005). This study aims study
the differences in RMR changes after a nitrate rich diet between obese and healthy subjects and see
the practical implications of a reduced RMR by dietary nitrates consumption on

When a man is longing to have sex with a woman, he becomes interested in her soul, and deceives

Perhaps this is the only way to liberate himself. This is a famous quote from the novel Red Rose,

gender role is opposed to gender equality and balance of a relationship. However, men and women

Buying Side And Buy Side Engagement At Focus Investment...
Approaches to the Opportunity
The approach taken to both sell side and buy side engagement at FOCUS Investment Banking is a
well defined one. Whilst Project Falcon was concerned with the sale of a CRO, this report will
highlight the process behind both buy and sell side engagements.
Sell Side Process
There are several motives for owners to sell profitable companies. These can include emerging
alternative interests, elderly age and health issues. Alternatively, the sale may be a strategic one in
which they intend to gain credibility in the eye of angels and venture capitalists for further projects.

Furthermore, the target list may omit some potential acquirers who could have bid aggressively (Sale

3. The Confidential Broad Auction
This confidential broad auction approach is the approach that is taken in all deals that FOCUS
Investment Banking represents. This is the most likely scenario for middle market companies as they
lend themselves well to broad and public selling methods. Confidentiality is maintained by taking a
blind outreach approach coupled with confidentiality agreements (Three Types of Auctions for Sell
Side Mergers Acquisitions, n.d). This method will generally bring in a excess of bidders that will be
made up of financial and strategic buyers (Sale Processes, 2017). Therefore, this process is most
effective in a strong merger market such as the CRO market. Nonetheless, a broad auction may deter
potential bidders due to fears of overpaying for a business (Sale Processes, 2017). Furthermore, a
broad auction can often consume a substantial amount of management s time and attention.
Sell Side process at FOCUS Investment Banking
FOCUS Investment Banking has a well defined and methodical execution process for its sell side
deals (Figure 1).

Worst Dog Food Brand
Top 10 worst dog food brands.
Choosing what to feed your dog can seem a little overwhelming and it sometimes might come down to
cooking his or her food yourself. Because of not knowing which dog food brand is really harmful for
your dog? Probably the stuff you re feeding her now. Because the worst dog foods are the most
fashionable ones on the market. And too many chemicals and low priced filler ingredients eaten
frequently by our pets are the same as us eating a strictly over processed fast food diet daily for life. I

that of his ancestral wild dogs... meat or fish. preferably, his food should contain at least 75 percent
protein from genuine meat or fish and 25 percent vegetable and fruit products.
Unfortunately, it s not easy at all to tell what the worst dog food brand is. Most of the ingredients just

whatever you do, stay away from dog foods that don t contain meat, but meat by products. By
products can mean any part of an animal except meat; they are waste products, and may not even

Summary Of Literary Regionalism By Sarah Orne Jewett
Sarah Orne Jewett was a female author in the late 19th century, who can be immediately set apart from
other writers of her time by the quality and content of her work, as well as the fact of her success as a
female writer during a time when writing books was considered a man s profession. Jewett always had
a penchant for observation and contemplation, and utilized these abilities, along with valuable writing
advice given to her by her father, to develop her unique writing style. Without delving into deeper
analysis, there are two distinctive themes that are easily recognizable in the vast majority of Jewett s
anthology of works.
Jewett was born and grew up in South Berwick, a small rural town in southern Maine. Many, if not

Miss Dobin and Miss Lucinda Dobin from The Dulham Ladies are excellent examples of this. The
main story describes two women who are arrogant and stuck up in their inability to realize that they

ignorance, it s surprisingly hard not to sympathize with the two. They re well written, complex
individuals that are relatable and likable realistic female characters in a time when most authors would
have written women as one dimensional plot devices with no depth of personality. Despite the fact that
Jewett s literary feminism often took a more passive form, she also occasionally used more
conspicuous allegory, such as the disturbance of the lives of the female characters Sylvia, Mrs. Tilley,
and the cow, by the intrusion of the male ornithologist in A White Heron.
Similarly, Jewett certainly didn t shy away from writing female characters in situations or roles
considered unusual or socially unacceptable for women at the time. Sylvia from A White Heron , who
Jewett based greatly off of her childhood self, is exactly the type of tomboyish, pocket knife wielding
and tree hugging young girl you don t often see in writing from this period. These deviations from that
era s common literary practices went so far as to describe women

When the executives decide that earnings should be retained, they have to account for them on the
balance sheet under shareholder equity. This allows investors to see how much money has been put
into the business over the years. Once you learn to read the income statement, you can use the retained
earnings figure to make a decision on how wisely management is deploying and investing the
shareholders money. If you notice a company is plowing all of its earnings back into itself and isn t
experiencing exceptionally high growth, you can be sure that the stock holders would be better served
if the board of directors declared a dividend.
Ultimately, the goal for any successful management is to create Re.1 in market value for every Re.1 of
retained earnings.
Retained Earnings Examples from Real Companies

The Use Of Non Human Tests Subjects For Experimentation...
Definition
Animal testing, also known as animal experimentation, is the use of non human test subjects for
experimentation and research studies (2). This definition is very broad because it is used in numerous
fields such as drug testing, brain functionality, effects of food additives, pesticides, DNA modification,
xenotransplantation, cosmetic testing, cancer research, AIDs research and many more. Overall, animal
testing is a professional conflict, but it can also be considered as a personal conflict whether or not you
believe it is right to test on any animal for the sake of science. Types of animals (Consciousness)
Because one species is more clever than another, does it give it the right to imprison or torture the less

This is done so researchers know the exact genes or traits that the animal being tested is exhibiting so
they can control the number of possible variables that can affect their their results. In the past, dealers
were licensed by the USDA to sell animals from random sources including animal shelters, free to a
good home ads, stolen pets and some were taken completely from the wild. This is a much less
common practice because it includes variety in your animals which could skew the researcher s results
and it is frowned upon. (Source?)
However, the question remains whether it is ethical to perform research on animals that exhibit some
form of consciousness. Consciousness is a very vague term and has been defined as many terms such
as sentience, awareness of itself within its surroundings, subjectivity, having a sense of selfhood, and
the executive control system of the mind and many more vague definitions(3). It has been known
through thousands of experiments that animals from a wide range of species can exhibit emotions such
as happiness, jealousy, grief, and stress(4).
The first animal to ever ask an existential question was a Grey African Parrot by the name of Alex.

told. Alex was studied by a behavioral psychologist from the late 70 s to the early 2000 s. He was

Aphrodite Research Paper
Aphrodite who is also referred to as Venus, was hugely admired in the Victorian era and appeared to
have kept much of her respected status that she had carried through with her from the 5th Century
Greek and Roman mythology. Aphrodite from an early century is the goddess of love and beauty and
is the subject to many art and literature forms in the Victorian era. What Briton s in the Victorian era
wrote about Aphrodite and how they illustrated her indicates what the average, educated Victorian era
Briton thought of Aphrodite. Aphrodite in the Victorian era appeared in literature and arts including
children stories, performing arts, Poems, books and newspaper columns. All of these mediums painted
Aphrodite in a slightly different way, all drawing on different aspects of her, yet most of them were
very similar in portraying a golden glorious goddess as well as a down to earth and charming goddess
who is much like a flower in her femininity. Britons in the Victorian Era were made familiar with
Aphrodite from a young age. The average educated child living in Britain in the nineteenth century
learnt about Aphrodite in early schooling. Classics was a huge part of the school curriculum and
children were taught both Greek and Roman mythology. As well as this children s books were
published at this time that told stories of Aphrodite. One particular book is A Day with the Sea Urchins
written by Helen Burnside in 1893. In Greek Mythology Aphrodite emerged from the sea, generated

The Key Computing Trends Driving The Need For Improvement...
CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION Today we are living in the era of internet where everything depends
on it. As the days and years passes, traffic on internet is increasing abundantly, users wants high speed
internet which can give the result of their aspired question within a fraction of seconds. To accomplish
the requirement of the user, the need for improvement of existing network architecture. Here comes
the role of SDN which is an emerging network architecture, our project is based on it which is
discussed in later chapters. In the introduction part we are going to check about SDN and its related
components. Software Defined Networking ( SDN ) Software Defined Networking (SDN) is an
emerging network architecture where network control is decoupled from forwarding and is directly
programmable . [1] The key computing trends driving the need for a new network paradigm include
the following: Changing traffic patterns: Applications that commonly access geographically
distributed databases and servers through public and private clouds require extremely flexible traffic
management and access to bandwidth on demand. The consumerization of IT : The Bring Your Own
Device (BYOD) trend requires networks that are both flexible and secure. The rise of cloud services:
Users expect on demand access to applications, infrastructure, and other IT resources. Big data means
more bandwidth: Handling today s mega datasets requires massive parallel processing that is fueling a

The Importance Of Folk Music
The reason why history exists is because some people felt that certain events were so important that
they must be recorded down for future generations to see. Many forms of history exist in typical forms
such as text or photos, but some of history s defining moments are displayed in the form of art. In the
past before a written language was formed people passed down their history through oral means such
as stories and music. Music especially played a role in the passing down of history because it was easy
to remember things to the beat of a song. The reason why so many people remember the lyrics to a
song rather than what they studied for a history exam they have coming up is because our brain can
connect the lyrics to the beat which makes it easier to remember. One form of song which can play a
huge role in a society s history and culture is folk music. Folk music defines the culture of the society
and the history behind it. They tell a story of a key person, place, thing, or event that has occurred in
that community and the impact it has had on that community. Because of their impact on society
historians research a places folk music in order to get a better grasp on what made that place into what
it is. Therefore, folk songs are just as legitimate to history as written documents and provide a unique
knowledge that may not be understood by just reading documents. Many historians spend time
researching about a place or event by looking at written forms of primary

Mybridge Comes To America Analysis
Introduction Documentary film, a term coined by John Grierson, the father of the documentary film
movement in the English speaking world, (Barsam, 1973, p. 77), concerns a genre that is unlike other
forms of cinema. There are no actors and the plot reveals itself in authentic actions rather than
dialogue. The people concerned are the characters, their lives the setting. In the years leading up to
Robert Flaherty s Nanook of the North, the first such feature length film, the medium was immensely
popular, with audiences clamoring to see the far reaches of the globe from their local theater or
exhibition house. While narrative film in the modern day is considered the default mode of
moviemaking, documentaries still capture the imagination and take the viewer into real lives they have
not experienced, rather than lives imagined on a page. Without these historic documentaries, film itself
may not have reached the heights of culture it inhabits today. The early history of documentary film is
inseparable from the history of film itself.
Muybridge Comes to America The work of photographer Eadweard Muybridge is commonly regarded

Persuasive Essay On Environmental Sustainability
The current global population of 7.6 billion people is expected to reach 11.2 billion in 2100 (UN
DESA), and as the Earth s population continues to grow exponentially, the topic of environmental
sustainability is being debated with increased urgency. In the past few years, many large scale
environmental issues have emerged due to human activities: climate change, air and water pollution,
rising sea levels, habitat loss, species extinction, and worsening natural disasters are all becoming
more and more prevalent. But perhaps our most immediate concern should be whether or not we will
be able to continue feeding this ever increasing population.
While all of us relatively understand how driving cars, leaving the lights on, or using too much water
can affect the environment, there is one massive human activity that is frequently overlooked eating.
From growing, to processing, to distributing, and finally consuming, our agricultural system uses an
immense portion of our planet s limited resources and emits large amounts of greenhouse gases that
have drastic effects on the environment. Because of this, it is imperative to understand the
environmental impacts of the type of foods that we choose to include in our diets. While much of
today s population is heavily reliant on animal products, it is evident that a meat based diet is not
environmentally sustainable; on the other hand, a plant based diet is much more environmentally
friendly in terms of the amount of grain, water, and

Similarities Between The Last Dog And The Last Dog
You are being deceived; two things can seem similar, but really, they are very different. What you
initially see is not always accurate, this is especially prominent in literature. Though Dark They Were
and Golden Eyed and The Last Dog appear to be similar, because they have similar genes and
characters, they have contrasting themes that are developed in vastly different ways.
The stories seem similar because they are both science fiction, and have main characters that are alike.
Brock and Bittering are extremely different than the people around them. Brock, in The Last Dog ,
lives in a dome, in what is a post apocalyptic Earth, where everyone in the dome is unemotional and
bland, except Brock. This quote from the text shows that the story is science fiction, ...he pulled the
scanner from his outside pouch and checked it hot. Oh, that was what he was feeling. Hot. Both stories
include many classic elements of science fiction, like being set in the future, and new technology and
science. Dark They Were and Golden Eyed shares the same traits. When a character says We re
stranded on Mars... it creates a science fiction story, because we do not currently have the technology
to live on Mars, and it shows the story is in the future. Both stories have similar main characters.
Brock and Bittering are the odd ones out in their peer group, Brock is more human than others,
because he has strong feelings, and longs for adventure. ...his heart was beating so hard... this supports
the fact that Brock is uncommon, because he is getting excited about leaving the dome. Bittering is
different from the people around him because he resists and questions the change that is affecting him
and his community. When Bittering says What is this? We ve got to get away from this. He is talking
about how Mars is slowing changing everything that is organic from Earth into Martian things. The
roses, for example, start normally but after some time on Mars they turn green. Bittering is abnormal
because everyone else from Earth is not worried about the changes they are going through. By sharing
the same gene, and having similar main characters, The Last Dog and Dark They Were and Golden
Eyed are similar, but they are, in fact,

We Must Spend Our Days
One week a summer, for as long as I can remember, I wave goodbye to my mom through the car
window at six in the morning. I am inside my family s Subaru Outback along with my dad, little
brother, little sister, and a trunk full of camping gear packed so methodically that there is a six inch
square of sight out the rear window. After a five hour drive we will be transported from the neat
suburbs of Long Island to the forests of the Adirondack Mountains, where we will be greeted by my
Aunt Carol and her dog Baxter. For this week we will sleep in a lean to looking out onto Taylor Pond
at our favorite campsite, I 3. We will spend our days in the pond and our nights around a fire. Our car
and cell phones will be a five mile canoe ride away, just far enough that we may actually escape their
omnipresence for a while. Although we may return home with clothes reeking of smoke and bodies
covered in mosquito bites, our trip to this other world will have been well worth it. On Taylor Pond
our isolation from society cannot be confused with actually being alone. We have loons, deer, eagles,
frogs, and the occasional howling coyotes to keep us company. The loons are normally the first to
greet us, after we ve loaded the canoes and commenced our five mile paddle down the pond. Their
signature sleek black heads can be tricky to spot as they are bobbing on the water one second, and are
200 feet under the surface the next. If you re up early enough to catch sunrise it will likely be

Questions On The Nature Of Interpretation
Hypothetical Misinterpretation
Jerrold Levinson, a prominent hypothetical intentionalist, through his explanation of the relationship
between artworks and exploratory interpretations, has gone under criticism for allowing
misinterpretations to be deemed as valid could mean options. However, one finds when reading Two
Notions of Interpretation and Intention and Interpretation in Literature that these criticisms are
effectively countered by two arguments that Levinson presents. Firstly, although the exploratory mode
of inquiry can have multiple, if not infinite, could mean answers, it also has could not mean answers.
These could not mean interpretations provide insight into the work and allow for interpretations to be
judged on a scale ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because they are ludic and not grounded in physical realities one can come up with multiple correct
interpretations that are sound but mutually exclusive.
To construe what something could mean, Levinson proposes that we, as interpreters, be pragmatic and
use logic in combination with our given knowledge of the contexts of works to determine their
interpretations. Although there exists an impulse to either exclusively use does mean or could mean
modes of inquiry, like an x ray for the former and a metaphor for the latter, the two modes actually
have mutual implications. To examine an x ray for what it means is to postulate what it could mean
and then come to an apt conclusion. To examine a metaphor is to find what is a plausible response in a
determinative context of semantic possibilities. There also exist instances of purely could mean
inquiries, says Levinson, like the infinite volumes of Babel, but without a does mean interpretation
available, as there are no intentions behind the works, the infinite possible could mean interpretations
create an absence of meaning. It is here I would like to extend the definition of does mean
interpretation beyond scientific knowledge based answers, to include hypothetical DM interpretations.

Community And Hate Crimes In The LGBTQ Community
Throughout society, social workers interact with oppressed groups far and wide. Social workers work
with these groups in hopes of pursuing social justice and to better the lives of these groups with the
usage of clinical referrals, providing individual and group therapy, welfare, and beyond the spectrum
as they establish a rapport with their clients simultaneously. One of the many groups is the LGBTQ
(lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning) community. For as long as history can write itself,
the LGBTQ community has faced various forms of attacks to their population; which then damages
society as a whole. The LGBTQ community faces several forms of oppression that is based off of the
fear, unfamiliarity, and hatred of those around them. This may cause them to have an enormous
distrust in society, suicide, and prominent discomfort. It is the social worker s responsibility to address
this community s pain and provide them the means, including empathy and appropriate resources,
necessary to climb the social ladder to equality physically and mentally. First and foremost, the
LGBTQ community faces a myriad amount of hate crimes. Hate crimes are defined by Congress as
criminal offense against a person or property motivated in whole or in part by an offender s bias
against a race, religion, disability, ethnic origin or sexual orientation (Plumm , K.M., Potter, S.,
Terrance, C.A.,2015). Typically, hate crimes are categorized differently from other crimes against

Cosmological Argument For The Existence Of God
The cosmological argument for the existence of God is based on causation and the world having a
beginning. It holds that everything that exists has a cause and there must have been an initial cause.
The argument attempts to prove the existence of God by making an inference from the world. It starts
from the reality that things exist and then follows that there is a cause for the existence of these things.
It acknowledges that something caused the universe to exist and some thing is currently keeping it
existing.
This argument provides that since everything that begins to exist must have a cause, there must be an
explanation to the beginning of the world. It tries to show that the universe did not create itself and is
not sustaining itself, but was created and is being sustained by God. The concept of causation provides
that everything that has a beginning must have a cause. Because the universe exists, it must have
started to exist at some point and must have a cause. The argument rests on the grounds that the first
cause must rely on nothing to exist, must be powerful enough to create something from nothing, must
have the will to create and must exist outside the universe it creates. The ... Show more content on

begin to exist does not violate the premise of everything existing having a beginning because God did
not start to exist because He was the First. In addition, the argument provides a distinction between the

The Border Cities Of El Paso And Ciudad Juarez
Along the Texas/Mexico border there are many border cities, and among the border cities there is a
trend that points to an advantage of prosperity on the US side compared to the Mexican side of the
border. The border cities of El Paso and Ciudad Juarez show an example of the US advantage over the
Mexican side; El Paso is a Texas city on the Texas/Mexico border, and in 2014 it was the city with the
lowest crime rate in the US ; Ciudad Juarez, on the other hand was known as one of the deadliest cities
in Mexico . Along with the differences in crime rates, El Paso and Ciudad Juarez have many
differences that make them clear examples of the advantage that Texas border cities hold over
Mexican border cities.
Crime
In 2010, Ciudad Juarez was one of the most violent cities in all of Mexico with 3,057 murders .
Ciudad Juarez became an example of the extent of the drug war that was occurring in Mexico in the
2000s. Death had become a common occurrence in Ciudad Juarez. At the height of the drug war in
Mexico, between the years of 2007 and 2012, around 11,078 people were murdered in Ciudad Juarez .
In contrast to Ciudad Juarez, El Paso had the lowest crime rate in the US in 2014 . According to the

D Day and the Effect on Bedford, Virginia How can a small county have such a significant loss, and
still recover immediately after and in the future? D Day took a big toll on the population of Bedford,
Virginia on June 6, 1944. The events of D Day still influence this small community today. Germany
invaded northwestern France in 1940; however, the Americans entered the war in December 1942 and
formed an alliance with Britain. Adolf Hitler was aware of the threats of invasion and put Erwin
Rommel in charge of defense operations (History.com). In January of 1944, General Dwight
Eisenhower became commander of Operation Overlord. Since Britain and America were Allies, they
used the alliance to deceive the Germans. They made the Germans think they were attacking Pas de
Calais instead, they attacked Normandy. They also made the Germans think that Norway, as well as
other locations, were potential targets (History.com). The Allies used many tactics to help with the
deception, like fake equipment, a phantom army, and fraudulent radios. June 5th was the original day
for the invasion. Unfortunately bad weather caused the attack to be postponed until the next day. On
June 6th, at dawn, the Allied troops invaded Western Europe from the sea. The Allied armies spent
several months preparing for this large amphibious attack. In addition, air attacks were used to keep

intriguing patterns. This is the Sierpinski Triangle, a fractal of triangles with an area of zero and an
infinitely long perimeter. There are many ways to create this triangle and many areas of study in which
it appears.
Named after the Polish mathematician, Waclaw Sierpinski, the Sierpinski Triangle has been the topic
of much study since Sierpinski first discovered it in the early twentieth century. Although it appears
simple, the Sierpinski Triangle is actually a complex and intriguing fractal. Fractals have been studied

Using this formula:
Log(4)
= Log(2)
Log(22)
= Log(2)
2Log(2)
= Log(2)
= 2
A square comes out to be a two dimensional object, but it doesn t work out so cleanly with the
Sierpinski Triangle. When you divide the triangle into pieces whose sides are half the size of the
original, you get three self similar triangles, so the formula works out:
Log(3)
= Log(2)
≈ 1.58496
But how can this be possible? The picture of the triangle is two dimensional. But remember, this is
only a depiction of the triangle. The real Sierpinski Triangle cannot be drawn because it is infinitely
detailed. 3
Another interesting aspect of the Sierpinski Triangle is its creation. There are several ways of
producing an image of the Sierpinski Triangle. The first and simplest method is by taking an
equilateral triangle and connecting the midpoints to create four triangles with sides that are half the
size of the original. Disregard the middle triangle and repeat these steps with the newly created three
other triangles. The Sierpinski Triangle begins to appear.
Of course, this would only be a true Sierpinski Triangle if you were to repeat these steps an infinite
number of times. So, realistically, this method only creates an image that resembles the Sierpinski
Triangle.
The next method of Sierpinski Triangle creation is by using the Chaos Game. The Chaos Game is a
method that uses randomly picked points to build an image of the triangle. To

Slaughterhouse Five Comparison
The book Slaughterhouse Five, written by Kurt Vonnegut, is an anti war book about Vonnegut s
exposure to the vivid events that unfolded during his time at the slaughterhouse in Dresden, Germany
and how it affected him. The story is told by Vonnegut through the perspective of the main
protagonist, Billy Pilgrim. Billy was a survivor from WWII and the Dresden bombing, but after
returning he claims to have traveled through time to explicit memories from life and had been
abducted by Tralfamadorians (aliens). However, in the film Slaughterhouse Five, directed by George
Roy Hill, viewers see slight changes to the storyline. Viewers notice that in the opening scene that
Vonnegut s friend Bernard O Hare and his wife, Mary O Hare, are never ... Show more content on

During his stay at mental hospital he would bed next to a former infantry captain, Eliot Rosewater,
where Rosewater would introduce him to the science novelist Kilgore Trout. Through the stories by
Trout, Billy read about aliens and time traveling. From these ideas, influenced by Trout, Billy was able
to make up his own stories and correlate them to his personal war experiences.
One of the more obvious and clear signs that Billy has gone insane is his claim to be have been
kidnapped by extraterrestrial beings known as Tralfamadorians. Billy claims to have been taken by
these beings and taken to Tralfamadore, where he spends eternity with Montana Wildhack, a famous
hollywood actress. Also, from the film version of the story Wildhack s image makes multiple
appearances and every time Billy glances at her image he stares in awe. Taking this into consideration,
it is important to note the irony that he just happened to be kidnapped with his celebrity crush by the
Tralfamadorians. To further prove that Billy made up the story about the aliens, viewers must evaluate
how he never mentions how he was captured, or how he managed to escape from Tralfamadore.
Instead, Billy magically returns to Earth and then rambles on about the culture and philosophy shown
on Tralfamadore. The way of life for the Tralfamadorians was stated by one of the beings which it
said, I am a Tralfamadorian, seeing all time as you might see a stretch of the

The Dystopian Novel, By George Orwell, And Andrew Niccol...
War is peace, freedom is slavery, Ignorance is strength (Orwell 7) this is one of the very many slogans
that were used to control society in George Orwell s piece 1984. Dystopian literature is a futuristic
universe that is oppressive and uses bureaucratic, totalitarian, and/or technological control to control
society. In Orwell s Dystopian book 1984, Kurt Vonnegut, Jr s short story Harrison Bergeron , and
Andrew Niccol s film In time, there are many examples of a Dystopia is that contain a lot of
comparisons between the stories. Dystopian literature whether it be novel, film, or short story focuses
on similar characteristics and things. A similarity that these three dystopias have in common is the
time setting. All of these stories are set to be in a futuristic time, or at least a time that was the future
from them. For instance, Orwell s book 1984 was written in 1948 as it stated on crisesmagazine.com
George Orwell Wrote 1984 in 1948 , but since it wasn t 1984, or anywhere near, so at the time it was
considered the future. In Vonnegut s short story Harrison Bergeron the author clearly gives evidence
that they are ahead of time when he writes The year was 2081 and everybody was finally equal
(Vonnegut 1). the story is set to be 66 years ahead of the current year. In Niccol s dystopian movie In
time, the exact year is not clearly stated, but in the plot summary written by Claudio Carvalho they
mention that it was set to be in futuristic times as it says In a

  • 2. Paul s Dehumanization In All Quiet On The Western Front In All Quiet on the Western Front, the Great War emotionally destroys Paul through the dehumanization of the soldiers. Throughout the book, thoughts of his future, desperation for life, and coping with his actions crushes him psychologically. Therefore Paul gains realization of the reality of the war; he soon loses everyone he has gained emotional attachment to during the time he serves and is unable to cope with the loss of all his companions. This disturbs him far more than the physical wounds in battle. From the beginning Paul has many doubts about his life after the war. Compared to the older men, he had no career or love to hopefully reunite with. As he imagines a life away from the violence, he realizes these boys entered the war before ... Psychologically Paul is greatly affected by his experiences in the war and is unable to express his time there. He has escaped any major injury during the most violent parts of the war. However after all his companions are killed in duty, he is restless and loses the desire to live. Paul was set free from the emotional turmoil when he dies; the physical pain no longer affects him. Ironically, he dies on an all quiet western front after seeing the terror behind the country s nationalism. Paul escaped serious physical wounds; however, he is completely destroyed by the effects of the war. After being mercilessly attacked with gas, he sees the brutality and lack of concern for the soldiers lives. Although he is continuously pressured by authority figures to see the opposing fighter as the main enemy, Paul understands the problem goes beyond killing other men. Analysis of the Research Process in a recently published Business Research Study Abstract The purpose of this paper is to analyze a recently conducted business research study in a view to assess whether the researcher has followed all the basic and essential steps of the Business Research Process or not. A Formal business research report starts with a brief introduction to the topic and clearly defines the Statement of the problem. In the subsequent sections, a comprehensive literature review is presented to give some background knowledge and explain the topic in the light of relevant past research studies (Sekaran Bougie, 2010). The researcher proceeds with defining his population, sample size, and methodology for his research study. Afterwards, he develops hypotheses and uses different analytical and statistical tools to draw results and present his final conclusion (Saunders, Lewis, Thornhill, 2006). The research study under analysis was conducted by Salim Darmadi in Indonesia to analyze the relationship between the placement of females in the Management Board of a firm and the financial performance of that firm. • 4. The Concept Of Self And Selflessness The concept of self and selflessness is prime to all Indian philosophies. Two of India s most popular religious systems, Jainism and Buddhism, teach renunciation of the self in order to reach Samadhi and Dharma (i.e. enlightenment, breaking free from the cycle of rebirth and correct living) (Collins, 1990). While Jainism vehemently espouses denial of self, both as an ideological concept and as a tangible reality, Buddhism teaches renunciation of self by way of still using the self as a vehicle for such understanding. While this may seem paradoxical, Buddhism uses the Four Noble Truths to espouse how the mind and sensory system can be used by the budding Buddhist to learn that the phantasmagorical and phenomenological aspects of the world are truly illusory. In this sense, Jainism represents absolutist denial of the self while Buddhism represents paradoxical renunciation of the self by way of utilizing the self towards understanding the porous nature and falseness of such a construct. Thus, many Indian philosophies take the denial of the self as a prime tenet of life. However, the gradations between such systems are intriguing, as is the case with Jainism and Buddhism. The religious and philosophical system of Jainism defines the self as a flimsy and false construct that acts as a liaison between the dense matter of the body and the immortal and perfect aspect of the soul residing within the body. The self holds true to the concept of samsara (i.e. transmigration, rebirth ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Representation of Miss Emily as an Extended Metaphor in Faulkner s A Rose for Emily The short story, A Rose for Emily, took place in the southern town of Jefferson sometime in the beginning of the twentieth century. One could say that Miss Emily lived and died under certain circumstances that could compare to how the Confederacy lived and died as a result of the Civil War. Miss Emily could represent an extended metaphor for the Old South and its traditions and customs. Faulkner wrote her character and her appearance, the town, her relationship with the world, and even her home, to reflect the social background of the Old South, as defined as the time period between the Colonial Era and Reconstruction. An example that furthers this conclusion is the concept of Emily having to pay taxes, and her refusal to do so; the North imposed taxes that the South did not wish to have to pay just like Miss Emily and the town of Jefferson. Emily s appearance somewhat fell from over the years. She used to be a beautiful woman in her prime, but when the deputy went to her house to ask her about paying taxes, she looked much different than before she closed herself up into her house. In that aspect, Emily could be a metaphor for the appearance of the South during its decline. During war, the North started total warfare; the total destruction of the South. In events such as Sherman s March to the sea, the Union Soldiers destroyed a lot of the South. Emily appears to be a ruin of what she once was, just as the South looked beautiful before war and messy during the Reconstruction period. The same unkemptness and change from magnificent to unsightly could be said about her house as well. Miss Emily stays in the confines of her own home for a number of years after her father s death. The only contact she has is with her servant who takes care of her by getting groceries and helping her around the house. Her isolation from the world is due to the fact that she cannot accept the fact that her father is dead, for he was all she had in the first place. This reflects ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. High Impulsivity And Novelty Seeking Drugs The article, High Impulsivity Predicts the Switch to Compulsive Cocaine Talking, sought to determine whether impulsivity and novelty seeking (which are behavioral markers of addictive drugs) place individuals in the vulnerability of compulsive seeking of the drug. The researchers used laboratory rats to test the vulnerability. Researchers found that high reactivity to novelty predicted the likelihood of rats seeking cocaine self administration. However, high impulsivity seemed to predict the development of addiction like behavior in the laboratory rats. The results obtained by researchers has changed the perspective from the impulsivity aspect of drug use towards the compulsivity factor during the initial stages of addiction development. Interestingly, the compulsive factor can be generated through neural physiology (i.e. neural mechanisms or diminished function of cortical function). In terms of lecture material, as discussed, drugs (such as stimulants) produce a hedonic state in individuals that leads them to greater drug use. The sensation of false euphoria can be what drives individuals who actively seek the drug. This can make drug users to impulsively seek drugs. As stated in the article, their evidence demonstrated that high levels of impulsivity can come before the onset of compulsive drug use. As discussed in lecture, although cocaine and caffeine are considered to be both stimulants, their effects are very different. There is a particular mechanism of biological ... Compromise of 1850 At the time of the creation of the Constitution, the issue of slavery had been put off and avoided, a decision that would later lead to the controversy now known as the American Civil War. The composition, which was once the solution to problems that the Union was having, had the opposite effect in the 1850s, when arguments and different interpretations of the Constitution resulted in sectionalism, threat of secession, and tension between the North and the South. There are varying dichotomies that continuously show up throughout the poem, and Beowulf and Grendel embody several themes that overlap with one another. The most evident dichotomy is good versus evil, but other dichotomies displayed align with the overarching theme of good versus evil, such as bravery versus cowardice, and dark versus light. This definition is very broad because it is used in numerous fields such as drug testing, brain functionality, effects of food additives, pesticides, DNA modification, xenotransplantation, cosmetic testing, cancer research, AIDs research and many more. Overall, animal testing is a professional conflict, but it can also be considered as a personal conflict whether or not you believe it is right to test on any animal for the sake of science. This is done so researchers know the exact genes or traits that the animal being tested is exhibiting so they can control the number of possible variables that can affect their their results. In the past, dealers were licensed by the USDA to sell animals from random sources including animal shelters, free to a good home ads, stolen pets and some were taken completely from the wild. This is a much less common practice because it includes variety in your animals which could skew the researcher s results and it is frowned upon. (Source?) However, the question remains whether it is ethical to perform research on animals that exhibit some form of consciousness. Consciousness is a very vague term and has been defined as many terms such as sentience, awareness of itself within its surroundings, subjectivity, having a sense of selfhood, and the executive control system of the mind and many more vague definitions(3). It has been known through thousands of experiments that animals from a wide range of species can exhibit emotions such as happiness, jealousy, grief, and stress(4). The first animal to ever ask an existential question was a Grey African Parrot by the name of Alex. The question he asked the trainer was What color am I? and learned the meaning of grey after being told. Alex was studied by a behavioral psychologist from the late 70 s to the early 2000 s. • 22. Aphrodite Research Paper Aphrodite who is also referred to as Venus, was hugely admired in the Victorian era and appeared to have kept much of her respected status that she had carried through with her from the 5th Century Greek and Roman mythology. Aphrodite from an early century is the goddess of love and beauty and is the subject to many art and literature forms in the Victorian era. What Briton s in the Victorian era wrote about Aphrodite and how they illustrated her indicates what the average, educated Victorian era Briton thought of Aphrodite. Aphrodite in the Victorian era appeared in literature and arts including children stories, performing arts, Poems, books and newspaper columns. All of these mediums painted Aphrodite in a slightly different way, all drawing on different aspects of her, yet most of them were very similar in portraying a golden glorious goddess as well as a down to earth and charming goddess who is much like a flower in her femininity. Britons in the Victorian Era were made familiar with Aphrodite from a young age. The average educated child living in Britain in the nineteenth century learnt about Aphrodite in early schooling. Classics was a huge part of the school curriculum and children were taught both Greek and Roman mythology. As well as this children s books were published at this time that told stories of Aphrodite. • 25. The Importance Of Folk Music The reason why history exists is because some people felt that certain events were so important that they must be recorded down for future generations to see. Many forms of history exist in typical forms such as text or photos, but some of history s defining moments are displayed in the form of art. In the past before a written language was formed people passed down their history through oral means such as stories and music. Music especially played a role in the passing down of history because it was easy to remember things to the beat of a song. The reason why so many people remember the lyrics to a song rather than what they studied for a history exam they have coming up is because our brain can connect the lyrics to the beat which makes it easier to remember. One form of song which can play a huge role in a society s history and culture is folk music. Folk music defines the culture of the society and the history behind it. They tell a story of a key person, place, thing, or event that has occurred in that community and the impact it has had on that community. Because of their impact on society historians research a places folk music in order to get a better grasp on what made that place into what it is. Therefore, folk songs are just as legitimate to history as written documents and provide a unique knowledge that may not be understood by just reading documents. • 26. Mybridge Comes To America Analysis Introduction Documentary film, a term coined by John Grierson, the father of the documentary film movement in the English speaking world, (Barsam, 1973, p. 77), concerns a genre that is unlike other forms of cinema. There are no actors and the plot reveals itself in authentic actions rather than dialogue. The people concerned are the characters, their lives the setting. In the years leading up to Robert Flaherty s Nanook of the North, the first such feature length film, the medium was immensely popular, with audiences clamoring to see the far reaches of the globe from their local theater or exhibition house. While narrative film in the modern day is considered the default mode of moviemaking, documentaries still capture the imagination and take the viewer into real lives they have not experienced, rather than lives imagined on a page. Without these historic documentaries, film itself may not have reached the heights of culture it inhabits today. The early history of documentary film is inseparable from the history of film itself. Persuasive Essay On Environmental Sustainability The current global population of 7.6 billion people is expected to reach 11.2 billion in 2100 (UN DESA), and as the Earth s population continues to grow exponentially, the topic of environmental sustainability is being debated with increased urgency. In the past few years, many large scale environmental issues have emerged due to human activities: climate change, air and water pollution, rising sea levels, habitat loss, species extinction, and worsening natural disasters are all becoming more and more prevalent. But perhaps our most immediate concern should be whether or not we will be able to continue feeding this ever increasing population. While all of us relatively understand how driving cars, leaving the lights on, or using too much water can affect the environment, there is one massive human activity that is frequently overlooked eating. From growing, to processing, to distributing, and finally consuming, our agricultural system uses an immense portion of our planet s limited resources and emits large amounts of greenhouse gases that have drastic effects on the environment. Because of this, it is imperative to understand the environmental impacts of the type of foods that we choose to include in our diets. While much of today s population is heavily reliant on animal products, it is evident that a meat based diet is not environmentally sustainable; on the other hand, a plant based diet is much more environmentally friendly in terms of the amount of grain, water, and ... What you initially see is not always accurate, this is especially prominent in literature. The stories seem similar because they are both science fiction, and have main characters that are alike. Brock and Bittering are extremely different than the people around them. Brock, in The Last Dog , lives in a dome, in what is a post apocalyptic Earth, where everyone in the dome is unemotional and bland, except Brock. This quote from the text shows that the story is science fiction, ...he pulled the scanner from his outside pouch and checked it hot. Oh, that was what he was feeling. Hot. Both stories include many classic elements of science fiction, like being set in the future, and new technology and science. Dark They Were and Golden Eyed shares the same traits. When a character says We re stranded on Mars... it creates a science fiction story, because we do not currently have the technology to live on Mars, and it shows the story is in the future. Both stories have similar main characters. Brock and Bittering are the odd ones out in their peer group, Brock is more human than others, because he has strong feelings, and longs for adventure. ...his heart was beating so hard... this supports the fact that Brock is uncommon, because he is getting excited about leaving the dome. Bittering is different from the people around him because he resists and questions the change that is affecting him and his community. When Bittering says What is this? We ve got to get away from this. He is talking about how Mars is slowing changing everything that is organic from Earth into Martian things. The roses, for example, start normally but after some time on Mars they turn green. Bittering is abnormal because everyone else from Earth is not worried about the changes they are going through. On Taylor Pond our isolation from society cannot be confused with actually being alone. We have loons, deer, eagles, frogs, and the occasional howling coyotes to keep us company. The loons are normally the first to greet us, after we ve loaded the canoes and commenced our five mile paddle down the pond. Questions On The Nature Of Interpretation Hypothetical Misinterpretation Jerrold Levinson, a prominent hypothetical intentionalist, through his explanation of the relationship between artworks and exploratory interpretations, has gone under criticism for allowing misinterpretations to be deemed as valid could mean options. However, one finds when reading Two Notions of Interpretation and Intention and Interpretation in Literature that these criticisms are effectively countered by two arguments that Levinson presents. Firstly, although the exploratory mode of inquiry can have multiple, if not infinite, could mean answers, it also has could not mean answers. These could not mean interpretations provide insight into the work and allow for interpretations to be judged on a scale ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Because they are ludic and not grounded in physical realities one can come up with multiple correct interpretations that are sound but mutually exclusive. To construe what something could mean, Levinson proposes that we, as interpreters, be pragmatic and use logic in combination with our given knowledge of the contexts of works to determine their interpretations. Although there exists an impulse to either exclusively use does mean or could mean modes of inquiry, like an x ray for the former and a metaphor for the latter, the two modes actually have mutual implications. To examine an x ray for what it means is to postulate what it could mean and then come to an apt conclusion. To examine a metaphor is to find what is a plausible response in a determinative context of semantic possibilities. There also exist instances of purely could mean inquiries, says Levinson, like the infinite volumes of Babel, but without a does mean interpretation available, as there are no intentions behind the works, the infinite possible could mean interpretations create an absence of meaning. It is here I would like to extend the definition of does mean interpretation beyond scientific knowledge based answers, to include hypothetical DM interpretations. One of the many groups is the LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning) community. For as long as history can write itself, the LGBTQ community has faced various forms of attacks to their population; which then damages society as a whole. The LGBTQ community faces several forms of oppression that is based off of the fear, unfamiliarity, and hatred of those around them. It holds that everything that exists has a cause and there must have been an initial cause. The argument attempts to prove the existence of God by making an inference from the world. It starts from the reality that things exist and then follows that there is a cause for the existence of these things. It acknowledges that something caused the universe to exist and some thing is currently keeping it existing. This argument provides that since everything that begins to exist must have a cause, there must be an explanation to the beginning of the world. It tries to show that the universe did not create itself and is not sustaining itself, but was created and is being sustained by God. The concept of causation provides that everything that has a beginning must have a cause. Because the universe exists, it must have started to exist at some point and must have a cause. When you divide the triangle into pieces whose sides are half the size of the original, you get three self similar triangles, so the formula works out: Log(3) = Log(2) ≈ 1.58496 But how can this be possible? The picture of the triangle is two dimensional. But remember, this is only a depiction of the triangle. The first and simplest method is by taking an equilateral triangle and connecting the midpoints to create four triangles with sides that are half the size of the original. Disregard the middle triangle and repeat these steps with the newly created three other triangles. The Sierpinski Triangle begins to appear.
