The Financial Accounting Standards Board
The purpose of the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) is to create and improve the
standards of financial accounting and reporting for nongovernmental entities. It is a standard for not
for profit financial reporting which provides useful information to investors and other users of
financial reports. The Accounting Standards Update 2011 5 discusses the reporting and presentation of
comprehensive income and its components in a full set of general purpose financial statements.
The goal of reporting comprehensive income is to report a measure of all changes in equity of an
entity except those resulting from owner investments and distributions to owners. If used with related
disclosures and other information in the financial ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This will allow for a more complete and detailed income statement. If the entity choses to provide a
single continuous statement, they are required to present the components of net income and total net
income, the components of other comprehensive income and a total for other comprehensive income,
along with the total of comprehensive income in that statement. If they chose the two statement
approach, an entity is required to present components of net income and total net income in the
statement of net income. The statement of other comprehensive income should immediately follow the
statement of net income and include the components of other comprehensive income and a total for
other comprehensive income, along with a total for comprehensive income. Despite which type of
comprehensive income statement the entity decides to present, they are required to present the
reclassification adjustments for items that are reclassified from other comprehensive income to net
income in the statement where the components of net income and the components of other
comprehensive income are presented on the face of the financial statement.
These changes apply to both annual and interim financial statements. These improvements will help

Love And Popularity In Romeo And Juliet
Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is a romantic tragedy about two young lovers from feuding
families who fall in love, however kill themselves due to a series of confusions. In the play, love and
romance is a predominant theme, a powerful force which greatly influences the characters decisions
and actions. Shakespeare uses a number of literary techniques such as oxymorons, imagery and
dramatic irony to explore the theme of love and romance. Shakespeare s comparison of the ideas of
love and hate demonstrates the unsettling love of Romeo towards Rosaline. In Act 1 Scene 1, Romeo
uses a number of oxymorons whilst expressing his love for Rosaline in his conversation with
Benvolio, such as O brawling love . The word brawling has connotations ... Show more content on

Romeo says, Call me but love, and I ll be new baptized. / Henceforth I never will be Romeo. . This
emphasises Romeo s strong love towards Juliet, as he is keen to break the links to his family and deny
himself as a Montague in order to be with her. Although Romeo is blindly in love with Juliet and is
hopeful about their future, the audience are aware that the fate of Romeo and Juliet is predestined due
to their family feud, and is unchangeable regardless to their relationship. Romeo changing his name
will make no difference to the long standing feud between the Montagues and the Capulets, and this is
seen in Act 5 Scene 3, when the two star crossed lovers kill themselves. Therefore, Romeo s
passionate love for Juliet and the audience s awareness of their tragic ending further highlights the
purity of Romeo s feelings for

The Lousy-Personal Narrative
I had never liked train cars. But I got on one anyway.
It was the same way with the traveling circus, I never liked circuses. Nowhere in my wildest dreams
did I ever imagine joining the circus until 2 years ago. But I did anyway, for the same reason I got on
the train car.
Oliver was doing it.
Oliver was my best friend since birth. He was 4 years, 3 months, and 2 days older than me (I figured it
out exactly. I had a lot of my time on my hands nowadays.), and was basically the older brother I
never had.
Oliver used to be slim and tall, his chocolate brown hair was always slicked back and out of his eyes.
His skin was just a shade lighter than his hair, and his eyes were like two pieces of coal. Dark freckles
dotted around his broad nose ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And me, Ambroise the lousy, followed his lead. I probably could have stopped him. I probably could
have said, Oliver, this plan is stupid. and he d listen. Because unlike anyone else in the whole world,
Oliver took me seriously.
The only thing I did was insist to come along. Maybe it was the surge of excitement I got when I was
offered to come along, or maybe it was my concern for Oliver that pushed me to make the decision.
But after spending 2 years in the circus, I realized it was because of Oliver. It was always because of
Oliver. I stole that candy bar because Oliver said he was hungry. I smacked that kid because he called
Oliver a word I wouldn t be able to repeat at home, if I had one. He didn t ask, he wouldn t ask, I just
did. There wasn t anything I wouldn t do for Oliver, even join a circus to keep an eye on him. Sitting
in a cold train car that smells like a barn, wearing a white and red striped rabbit onesie, watching at
least three new girls flock around Oliver like a bunch of vultures makes me wonder if I made the
wrong choice.
Oliver was always popular with the ladies, but I know he s not interested. He can t be. Girls constantly
come up to me trying to push information

An Investigation of Customization in ERP System...
IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT, VOL. 56, NO. 4, NOVEMBER
2009 663 An Investigation of Customization in ERP System Implementations Marcus A. Rothenberger
and Mark Srite Abstract This research investigates why certain enterprise resource planning (ERP)
system adopters have pursued high levels of software customization during implementation despite
the generally accepted best practice heuristic of limiting customization. Qualitative data from ERP
adoption projects and consultants working with ERP implementations have been collected. This study
empirically identifies customization drivers and explains their relationship to customization. The
results suggest that high customization may occur because of: unnecessary ... Show more content on

Such decisions address the dilemma that all ERP adopters continuously face during the
implementation: whether to change the business process to fit the ERP system or whether to change
the ERP system to fit the business process. To minimize customization, the decision to change the ERP
system should only be made in rare circumstances, e.g., when a business process cannot be changed
without losing a competitive advantage. Furthermore, such decisions require cooperation between the
information technology (IT) and the operational departments, following formal defined activities,
which are part of a change management process. Thus, change management is instrumental to ERP
implementation. In fact, it was listed as one of the top five factors in a study of chief information
officer (CIO) perceptions of critical success factors for ERP projects [17]. The analysis of two
implementation cases [7] confirms this notion as it identifies change management as one of the major
success factors. The issue of management and employee readiness to implementing business process
change is a common characteristic of successful implementations. In a case study of a failed SAP R/3
implementation [13], the absence of change management inhibited the broad involvement of
employees in the implementation of business changes required for the successful adoption of the ERP
system standard processes. The importance of business process reengineering and minimal
customization was further confirmed

Evolution Of The Airplane Research Paper
The first name that comes to mind when talking about the history of airplanes are The Wright
Brothers. Orville and Wilbur were American inventors who are credited with the inventing, building,
and flying the first self propelled airplane that could be controlled and could land safely. On December
17, 1903, the Wright brothers set for the skies and made the first controlled flight near Kitty Hawk,
North Carolina. From the first powered, manned, and controlled flight many aspects of the airplane
has been improved while the basis of the control system pilots use is still intact. From the first airplane
to the current ones that occupy the sky today have seen changes and improvements in avionics, the
structure and materials that are being used, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Planes have shifted from wood and canvas structures to ones made from aluminum and other
composite materials. Propeller driven planes are still around today but the engine used to spin the
propeller has become more efficient and powerful. Jet engines have replaced many of the propeller
driven engines on the bigger planes allowing the plane to fly faster and at greater altitudes. The
incorporation of avionic systems like auto pilot, navigation, and communication has made the pilot s
life easier when flying. Without these advances in the airplane people and/or goods wouldn t able to
fly the great distances they do today. The airplane is used all over the world for varying reasons,
commercial airline companies such as United, Delta, and Southwest fly passengers all over the world
for business or leisure. Companies like UPS, Fedex, and the United State Postal Service use planes to
deliver packages all over the world. The military uses planes in time of war, for reconnaissance
missions, and to deliver aid to countries in times of need. Emergency services use planes to transport
injured people to different locations or put out wildfires from the sky. Those are just a few examples
of how improvements to the airplane has made an impact on citizens that surround

Layers Of Airport Security
Identifying terrorists at airports is a very difficult task for homeland security professionals since
terrorists can blend in very well with the more than 650 million law abiding passengers that travel
every year via U.S. airports (United States Government Accountability Office, 2014). The security
layered approach is a security strategy that helps reduce the risk of a terrorist infiltrating into an
airport by employing a wide range of tools and programs that can enhance airport security (Hoggan,
2012). The numerous layers of security are designed to be able to prevent, identify, and stop a terrorist
attack in case one of the previous security layers failed to do so (Cason, Lu, Schreckengast, 2010, pg.
88). Each security layer has their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This strategy allows DHS to be able identify suspicious individuals before they even arrive to the
airport. The names of passengers are being matched against the database when the passengers book
their flights prior to arriving to the airport, which is more time and cost effective for DHS than having
to identify suspicious individuals among large crowds of people at airports.
As mention above, all layers of security have some weak points and the Secure Flight program is not
the exception. It may be very difficult for DHS to be able to effectively screen suspicious individuals
without disrupting the flow of passengers since the screenings of suspicious individuals may take
longer in comparison to those passengers who do not pose a threat or are not considered suspicious.
Therefore to combat the Achilles heel of the Secure Flight program, DHS has created the TSA pre
check program. The TSA pre check is a program in which passengers, usually those passengers who
travel frequently, voluntarily submit themselves to extensive background investigations and if the
passenger is able to meet the requirements posted by DHS, then the passenger will be allowed to go
through expedite screenings when they travel as the passenger will be considered by DHS a Trusted
passenger

Descriptive Essay On A Trampoline
The Trampoline Have you ever noticed how some yards seem to reflect the personality of the
homeowners perfectly? The perfectionist s home seems to always be positioned in the middle of a
perfectly manicured lawn. The artist has treasures and flowers in abundance. The yard endlessly
littered with toys and bikes seems almost exclusively to belong to the parents of several young kids.
Our house seems to be no exception. Though our yard is small and sparsely decorated, its lone
ornamentation a worn trampoline given to my siblings and me when we were still young enough to
enjoy it seems to speak volumes about my family and our day to day life. Our house sits on the top of
a hill, and the trampoline is positioned so that it seems poised to jump right to the bottom of the
incline. The net is worn and ripped in several places, hanging lower on the poles with every passing
storm. Where once the enclosure could be safely zipped is now just a gaping hole, an old man s
toothless mouth hung open in shock at his own ability to survive. Several springs are missing and
those that remain creak and groan with the slightest pressure. It s legs have been broken through the
years so that, looking at it now, one of the metal rod hover slightly above the ground. Sitting on the
front porch, staring over at the poor dilapidated toy, a thought crosses my mind: if this trampoline
were a horse, it would be shot. In the next moment, I hear a familiar voice yelling my name in the
mangled

Boo Radley Prejudice
The definition of the word prejudice is a preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual
experience. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee shows the horrible things prejudice can
cause to the people the prejudice is against, including three main characters: Arthur Radley, Atticus
Finch and Tom Robinson. To start off, the result of prejudice is seen through Arthur Boo Radley. In
the town of Maycomb County, Boo Radley is known of as a beast (or monster) for stabbing his father
in the leg while he was making a scrapbook, among other things. Although this was not the best thing
he could ve done, no one actually knows if there was a reason for him doing this and the citizens of
Maycomb are not letting Arthur show what type of person he actually is. Another hardship containing
prejudice at Arthur Radley is between Scout, Jem and Dill. When Dill comes to visit his aunt from

Nearly all of Scouts friends have fathers that are youthful and able to do activities that her father is
unable to do because of his age. This shows prejudice because Scout is making a snap judgment
before getting all the information correct and could have at least talked to Atticus about something that
Scout and him could have done together that isn t too tiring for him. Later on, we read about how
Atticus is very well trained with a gun. Yet, this is something Atticus is not proud of and doesn t want
to have anything to do with shooting a gun. The second event of prejudice towards Atticus is when he
gets called a nigger lover for supporting the idea of him defending a black man named Tom Robinson.
The third incidence of prejudice towards Atticus is when Bob Ewell spits on Atticus s face after he
finds out Atticus will be defending Tom Robinson: What kind of man are you! Bob Ewell says this
after he finds out Atticus is going to try his hardest to defend

Physics Of Physics And Learning
Physics is a scientific field of study that focuses on matter and energy through space and time. Broad,
almost philosophical, questions are asked in the study of physics such as How does the universe
behave? and Why do atoms move? Possibly one of the oldest academic disciplines, physics is an
innately complex field. This is a possible reason that many students have trouble grasping major
concepts within physics. Numerous students have difficulty approaching physics, unsure of how to
study, understand, or apply the concepts that they are learning. Two research articles discuss this
complexity of physics education. The first, written by Danielle Harlow and Valeria Otero, titled

Throughout the study, students understanding of the concept of force was analyzed. During an
intensive summer class at which the scholars were analyzed, many misconceptions were established
by two observed students, Amy and Deb. Overall the major misconceptions came from a basic
misunderstanding of the term force. The readers first observe this as Amy and Deb question the
interchangeability of force with other terms. During the study they use, ...force and energy
interchangeably and question, ...if force and motion are the same thing... (Harlow and Otero 2). Deb
and Amy continue to try and understand the main idea of force, but by not having a proper understand
of what force was, they could not reach the next step of understand where force ended and energy
began; additionally, the students questioned whether forces could be transferred. After more
discussion, Amy and Deb eventually came to a conclusion but still had an incomplete understanding
of forces and their relationship to other terms. Looking to Figure 2 (Harlow and Otero 4), the
incomplete idea of the relationship between force and acceleration can be observed; unfortunately, the
students could not match their verbal ideas to experimental observations. Overall, in the article
authored by Harlow and Otero, the audience views the general misconception

other things in themselves make her fascinating and intriguing as well.
Born on February 15 1820, Susan B. Anthony was brought up in a Quaker family with long activist
traditions. After teaching for fifteen years, she became active in temperance. Because she was a

Juvenile Retrograde Law
The government, instead of ensuring proper implementation of the rehabilitation and correction of the
children in conflict with the law is shredding its responsibility through this retrograde law, holding the
children accountable for the failures of our juvenile correctional institutions. This would never
succeed as a deterrent and would only serve to ostracize them. This amendment to the preexisting law,
not only lacks a rational social objective but also constitutional validity. The selective and unequal

One of the most significant factors in the patient s recovery is family involvement and support. Family
acceptance and support can help a patient deal with issues the patient may have during the rehab
process. Positive attitudes and reinforcement from loved ones often help the patient work towards
recovery. Family contribution, flexibility, and open communication can overcome various barriers.
Families who inspire hope can help the patient to adjust and become more confident in his or her own
abilities. Finally, family and friends can also offer practical support, such as rides to the doctor or
pharmacy, going to the grocery store, and offering to babysit during health care visits. The
encouragement of family and friends can motivate people who have been having difficulties in their
rehabilitation to take steps to be more active and get back to work more quickly than those who do not

Essay on Analysis of Daddy by Sylvia Plath
Analysis of Daddy by Sylvia Plath In the poem Daddy, Sylvia Plath describes her true feelings about
her deceased father. Throughout the dialogue, the reader can find many instances that illustrate a great
feeling of hatred toward the author s father. She begins by expressing her fears of her father and how
he treated her. Subsequently she conveys her outlook on the wars being fought in Germany. She
continues by explaining her life since her father and how it has related to him. In the first stanza the
reader realizes that Sylvia Plath is scared of her father. It is quite clear that she never spoke up to him
to defend herself. In the first line it is apparent that something is ending. You do not do, you do not do

and he was hospitalized. Doctors performed surgery, but it was too late. Otto s toe was amputated in

a kind of hideous way that makes her sick. I used to pray to recover you. Ach, du, shows me that she

Symbolism In William Golding s The Lord Of The Flies
Authors have a sneaky way of revealing the greater themes that they are writing about in their books.
They reveal themes by using symbols to represent both the actual person or object and also a deeper,
hidden meaning. Placed through the story, symbols can be discovered if the reader takes a close
thoughtful look. In William Goldings, The Lord of the Flies, a group of school boys are involved in a
plane crash that leaves them stranded on a deserted island. The boys slowly begin to lose their
civilized nature and start turning into primitive savages. Golding uses symbols throughout his story to
demonstrate their crumbling society. The three most important symbols in the novel are the conch
shell, The Lord of the Flies and the face paint or masks.
The conch shell symbolizes the law and order of the boys old world, the adult world in which the boys
are used to following rules in. When Roger destroys the conch, chaos quickly takes over because there
is no leader or way to call a meeting anymore. Ralph and Piggy find the conch shell on the beach at
the beginning of the book and use it to call the boys to a meeting after the plane crashes. The conch
shell becomes a symbol of power, civilization and order in the book. The conch shell represent power
because Ralph was elected chief partially because he found it and was holding the shell when the
group was deciding on a leader. The shell helps the boys keep order in their meetings, because only

Summary Of Gothic Children s Literature And The...
When encountering the title of this scholarly journal, Psychoanalysis, Gothic Children s Literature,
and the Canonization of Coraline , I was excited to delve into the gothic terrain of the subconscious.
However, Chloé Germaine Buckley s paper does not give us a straightforward analytical reading, but
instead challenges the dominant modes of interpretation when dealing with children s literature.
Buckley engages with Neil Gaiman s Coraline, challenging some of the critical responses to the book,
as well as drawing in some foundational literary criticism authors and thinkers such as Sigmund
Freud, Roland Barthes and Lewis Carroll. Buckley s intention with this paper is to oppose restrictive
interpretations of Coraline, as she posits the book to be far more complex than most examples of
children s literature. Freud s Uncanny , gothicism, and psychoanalysis have been posited as the best
tools for approaching children s literature by the critics Buckley intends to circumvent. She believes
these methods are a tangled mess that confuse origin with originality, that mistake the interpretation of
Coraline s influences as interpretations of the book itself. Buckley notices that Gaiman has drawn
satirically from Freud, offering a crash course for children on psychoanalysis and the uncanny. With
this in mind, Buckley wants to make room for more postmodern interpretations that engage
intertextuality and satirical elements, in order to fully appreciate the scope of Gaiman s book.

How Is Kinky Boots Essay
The film, Kinky Boots, is about a young shoe factory owner named Charlie Price, and his partnership
with a drag queen named Lola. After his father s death, Charlie had a choice to either sell the
company, or to take on the responsibilities left by his father. Choosing to take on the business, he
created a goal to save the factory by making a shoe designed for a niche market, drag queens. Charlie
asked for Lola s help, and they worked together with the other factory members to produce and bring
these shoes to Milan. As the film progresses, both Charlie and Lola discover more about themselves

Summary Of Experiential Learning
In the reading Experiential Learning: Experience as the Source of Learning and Development by
David Kolb (1984), he proposed that learning is a cycle process in which individuals learn through
their own experiences in life. This notion of the learning cycle in which he was influenced by the ideas
of three other theorists (Piaget, Dewey, and Lewinian) called it Experiential Learning Theory. Kolb s
theory was based on how people learned by imputing information and processing the information.
Within this two abilities, there are four steps in which Kolb s believe the learning process occurs. The
first one he calls concrete experience , in which one actually does the learning right then and now. The
second one is reflective observation when the learner thinks about what they did as a reflection of the
experience. The next step is the abstract conceptualization , where the learner makes a generalization
of the experience. The last step is active experimentation , where the learner puts to practice his/her
understanding and adapts to it. The learner does this by taking all the first three steps of the learning
cycle and seeing the results (pg. 30). Learning is a process in which individuals learn through trial and
error. This process can then be reused with our prior experience to strengthen the outcome of our first
experience. It is shaped as a cycle in the way we process information cognitively. This is how I
understood of the reading on Kolb s Experiential Learning Theory.

The Importance Of Relative Fitness
chosen genotype survives; but this must be the same as the probability that a randomly chosen
individual survives, regardless of information on genotype. Relative fitness. The relative fitness of a
genotype (w) equals to its absolute fitness when get normalized. In the most common normalization,
the absolute fitness of each genotype is divided by the absolute fitness of the fittest genotype (Barton
and Turelli, 1989), such that the fittest genotype has a relative fitness of one. We can also define a
selection coefficient (s), a measure of how much worse the A2 allele is than A1. Mathematically, w2 =
1 s. Although the definition of relative fitness is simple, the mathematical relationship between
absolute and relative fitness is subtle (Bazykin, 1969; Betzig, 1986 and Beatty, 2008). In particular,
there is a curve of diminishing returns between these two quantities i.e., increasing the absolute fitness
of a genotype by some amount has less effect on relative fitness (compared with the mean relative
fitness) than does decreasing the relative fitness of the genotype by the same amount. The importance
of mathematical implication of fitness is straightforward i.e., when zygotes attempt to mature,
selection acts, killing some. Because a proportion (W1) of A1 individuals and a proportion (W2) of A2
individuals survive, the proportion of individuals that carry A1 after selection acts is pW1 / (pW1 +
qW2) It follows that selection will increase the frequency of the fit A1

False Interpretation In Revelation Chapter 12
The beginning of Revelation chapter 12 states that a great sign or wonder appeared in heaven. This
sign was the image of woman clothed with sun, the moon was under her feet and she had twelve stars
on her head. Over the many years since the Apostle John described this sign there has been many false
teachings about who this woman is. One of the erroneous teachings is that the woman is the Church.
Matthew Poole in his commentary on Revelation chapter 12 stated I find all valuable interpreters
agreeing, that this woman represented the church, well enough compared to a woman. This
interpretation neglects that further down in the chapter that the woman is described as pregnant and at
the point of giving birth. The church is described in 2 Corinthians chapter 11 verse 2 as the chaste
virgin beginning presented to Christ not as one who is giving birth to Christ. Another example of false
interpretation is applying it to be symbolic of all goddesses in multiple cultural contexts. Tina Pippin
proposes such an interpretation in her work Revelation/Apocalypse of John where she states She has
been interpreted as many things: the image of Israel, of Mary, of Ishtar, of Inanna, of Isis, and more
recently of Our Lady of Guadalupe (a merger of Mary with the Aztec goddess Coatlaxopeuh). The
diversity of this goddess images fits easily into a variety of culture contexts as a symbol of power One
final example of false interpretation of this passage is that the woman is

Loss Of Innocence In Macbeth
My image shows the flag of Scotland (setting), although I used different colors to represent my
character, Macbeth. In Macbeth, the theme loss of innocence is relevant. The cross in the middle is
white, seeing that the color represents Macbeth s innocence at the beginning of the play. At first,
Macbeth is a respected Thane, a devoted husband and a loyal subject to King Duncan, in which the
King calls him A valiant cousin and worthy gentleman, in act 1 scene 2. The first of the witches
prophecies then bring out his ambitious nature, but he struggles with the idea of killing the King.
Later, Macbeth proves his innocence when he tells Lady Macbeth that they will proceed no further in
the business of murdering King Duncan: We will proceed no further in this business. ... Show more

Are you afraid to be the same man in reality as the one you wish to be? Would you have the crown
which you believe to be the ornament of life, and yet live like a coward in your own self esteem? To
this question, Macbeth loses his innocence and states that he is convinced to follow through with the
murdering of King Duncan, I m convinced, and I commit every part of my body to this terrible event.
This is where the color red comes in, which represents blood and guilt. Macbeth s evil deed of killing
Duncan causes him to suffer from fear and guilt, which leads to even more crimes. Although he is
moved with fear in the beginning, he has a loss of innocence; he murders not only King Duncan but

Essay On The Voting Rights Act Of 1965
The voting rights act of 1965 was designed to prohibit discrimination based on race, and requires
certain jurisdictions to prove bilingual assistance to language minority voters. The act banned the use
of literacy tests, provided for federal oversight of voter registration in areas where less than 50 percent
of the nonwhite population had not registered to vote. Still voting rights gave African American voters
the legal means to challenge voting restrictions and vastly improved voter turnout. In Mississippi
alone, voter turnout among blacks increased from 6 percent in 1964 to 59 percent in 1969. When the
law was first passed, they made the blacks take a test to be able to vote. (history.com). Since 1965 the

Native Americans and Asian Americans voters in the west did the same. Even after enactment of the

A Choppy Estuary And Pass Of Leny
The two pieces of artwork being compared in this paper are two different ships made via the use of
different mediums. These pieces, while similar in concept, are different in their executions. Through
these two pieces, people will see that the two different mediums can achieve similar lifelike results.
The first piece, A Choppy Estuary, created by Hulk Abraham, was created with the use of wet media,
this one being painted with oil paints. The picture consists of four ships, clouds, and some people on
nearby land. It uses various colors, with major focus on various reds and blues, to place emphasis on
the ship on the front right of the piece.
The second piece, Drawing of the ship Pass of Leny as a three masted square rigged sailing ship, is an
illustration created by dry media, this one using graphite pencils. It focuses on one ship, the Pass of

Essay on American Education in the 1800 s
American Education in the 1800 s
In the early 1800 s education in America grew and developed rapidly, largely because of the works of
three very important men: Noah Webster, William McGuffey, and Horace Mann. These three men
were catalysts for the growth of education throughout the nineteenth century, and without them the
large strides America took during this time would not have occurred. These great men all shared one
goal: to educate the youth of America as well as possible. This was no small task, however, because
the educational system in place was disorganized and had several large problems that had to be
overcome.
The task of correcting the many problems that faced education in the early 1800 s required the genius

The book was such a success that it was used in classrooms for almost one hundred years
(www.ctstateu.edu). Noah Webster s greatest accomplishment was writing the first truly American
dictionary. The book took more than 27 years to complete, and among the nearly 70,000 words
featured in it were truly American words, such as skunk and chowder (www.christianlaw.com). This
book was the work of a lifetime for Webster, and his name is now nearly synonymous with any
modern American dictionary.
Another great contributor to the spread of American educational tools was William McGuffey, author
of the widely spread series, Peerless Pioneer Readers. This series of writings was used in every state
of the Union and had a very obvious effect on students in American schools (lib.muohio.edu). Along
with creating such influential educational tools, McGuffey also taught at several prestigious
institutions of higher learning, such as Ohio University and Miami University (www.hfmgv.org). With
such a widespread influence caused by not only his educational series but his teaching across the
Midwest, it s no surprise that McGuffey is considered one of the instigators of the rapid improvement
of the educational system in America.

Total Control Monopolies
Before answering why monopolies are discouraged by both state laws and federal laws. Important is
to know what the word monopolies means. Where one producer, or a group of producers, control the
supply of goods or service on the market. Additionally, the market is highly restricted and it is very
hard for other producers to enter. Firms that are defined as monopolist firms, keep their prices high
and restrict the output, so they can maximize their profits. They often have no responsiveness when it
comes to the needs of their customers. By preventing total control over the market, some governments
control the monopolies by having three important rules. First they impose a price control, second by
taking over their ownership, and thirdly by

Loewen The Land Of Opportunity Summary
Loewen first main point is some high school history textbooks portray labor history and unions as
things of the past. The next point he makes is that some high school history textbooks neglect
examination of social class and depicts as a middle class nation full of opportunities for class mobility
despite the drop of middle class people and the widening gap between classes. Another main point
Loewen focuses on is that social class effects sectors of a person s life like their health, environment,
education, and financial opportunities. To appeal to his points, he primarily uses ethos and pathos
when he is trying to appeal to his audience. For instance, Loewen uses ethos to express his knowledge
about the subject by sharing his research results about textbooks and providing other peoples studies
to fortify his points about social class s effect on people. Loewen utilizes pathos by appealing to his
readers emotions by choosing language that expresses his displeasure of students having a limited
understanding of the classes by using words like half formed and naïve. Also, he uses pathos to appeal
to his readers emotions as he uses examples for the ways the class system effects people like when he

Alcohol Stereotypes And Arguments In Advertising
Products that should not be advertised
Advertisement is crucial for any firm that seeks to reach out to its customers. Billions of dollars are
used in advertisements by many companies around the globe. The results are in many cases positive
and satisfactory. Products are known to the public (Brick, 2008), which in turn attracts them.
However, certain products should not be advertised. Alcohol and some commonly used drugs should
not be advertised. Drugs such as tobacco and khat are detrimental to health. Alcohol is widely
advertised in many countries by brewing companies. Despite of its negative effects firms still hold on
to the ill practice. Millions of youth have been exposed to alcohol through television commercials.

Power Of Words In The Book Theif Markus Zusak
The Power of Words Words have the capability to save a life, but they also have the power to end one.
Language, specifically words, have very powerful means. Words are considered the most effective
way to communicate. They shape our emotions, lifestyle, decisions, culture, and more. Words have the
ability to connect people, outlast, and influence opinions. Opinions and thoughts are often determined
by words. Mohammed Qahtani, 2015 World Champion of Toastmasters, provides an example of this.
In his speech, Mohammed said, Do you know that the leading cause of lung cancer? Is not actually a

Analysis Of High School Based Television Shows Violence...
In high school based television shows there are constant themes of insecurity and the division of
popular kids and the outcasts. Unfortunately, that is how the world works, people are labeled and
associated with certain groups. These labels force people into thinking that they have to look a certain
way or follow popular trends. Just like Susannah Calahan in Brain on Fire, she suffers from an illness
and during her recovery she criticizes herself based off of what society expects her to look like. Social
norms are deeply entrenched in everyone s life to the point where Susannah tries to hide her sickness
and put on a strong face just to avoid being labeled as abnormal. There is a sense of her fear of being
ridiculed and alienated from her loved ones since she does not fulfill the common image society has
on women. Susannah is embarrassed by her actions, her appearance and she refuses to accept that her
new self is even a part of her identity. Susannah does not view her post illness appearance as
acceptable despite having no control over the outcome. Identity is in fact a matter of social
construction since Susannah s self esteem and perception of herself deteriorates as she finds herself
deviating from what is considered normal. One important aspect of Susannah s illness is that it causes
her to dramatically shift from a sociable person to someone who cannot hold a conversation.
Throughout the duration of her sickness and her road to recovery, often times she cannot

An Analysis Of Paul Robeson s The Power Of Negro Action
TITLE goes here
This paper shall proceed as follows; I will begin exploring first the essay by Paul Robeson and
highlighting some of the most striking and interesting facets, followed by the chapter from Rhonda
Williams where I will explore the connections to the chapter by Robeson, and lastly I will look at the
essay from Andrea Friedman, where I will further note interesting facets of the reading as well as
create ties to the aforementioned works. Paul Robeson s chapter The Power of Negro Action is rather
straightforward from the outset. Robeson is presenting an empowering piece, which has several
subsections relating to the central theme of collectivized action on the behalf of black people. One of
the more interesting aspects of this chapter comes from the way in which Robeson calls for black
people to use their agency to better their position. From the outset Robeson states, I say that Negro
action can be decisive. I say that we ourselves have the power to end terror and to win for ourselves
peace and security throughout the land (Robeson, 90). The interesting aspect of this quote is the fact
that the paragraph proceeding it establishes the historical precedent of blacks not necessarily enacting
the full degree of their agency. However, Robeson s call proclaiming the power of black agency
contrasts this and shows a progression toward the growing sentiments of blacks having more power
than dominant society would like to portray. Robeson exclaims that the power that

Yes indeed, but as I predicted, the effect didn t last very long. Enhancing a country s image is a relay
race, not a sprint, and countries need to become obsessive about asking themselves What do we do
next? Germany hasn t followed up on its World Cup success, so people are starting to revert to their
previous beliefs about the country. This always happens and it can only be prevented by projecting a
constant, unbroken stream of dramatic evidence that the country deserves the reputation it desires.
Even in countries where Germany did not previously enjoy a great reputation, the country s image was
massively enhanced after what has gone down in the history books as Germany s summer fairytale .
Does this mean that some elements of the brand essence are in fact very volatile, in other words, nice

No, they really aren t volatile at all: quite the contrary. National image is more like a fixed asset than a
liquid capital, and normally can t be changed at all. Nothing could be more difficult than changing any
of these attributes. I have great respect for the way in which Germany managed to move the needle on

Beowulf An Epic Hero
Introduction
Epic is a word can be very confusing. In ordinary conversations, one could refer to an epic hero as just
a hero possessing remarkable strength, and personal characteristics, which are considered timeless.
However, a true, literary epic hero has to meet a given set of criteria concerning his character and
abilities: qualities, which make him to be different or at a level that is above other great people.
According to Cascio (n.d), epic heroes are heroes who are on a mission, and they exhibit various kinds
of superhuman powers displaying generosity, loyalty, as well as courage. The epic story Beowulf is
generally an epic that is well known and is described as one of the best epic stories. The epic hero
Beowulf in the novel Beowulf illustrates characteristics of physical strength, courage, self confidence,
wisdom, as well as loyalty, much like today heroes.
Additionally, an epic hero refers to a bigger than life hero embodying the values of a given society
(Trask, 1998). In most instances, epic heroes generally have superior strength, and besides, they

God s grace provided the strength. Weapons that are used by the epic heroes are distinguished

Pros And Cons Of Gun Control Laws
I think that there should be more gun control laws because it can help in the future. Even though many
people already own guns and they can t be taken away because of the Second Amendment, it can
prevent those who shouldn t own a gun from buying one. Implementing more laws would make it
harder to own a gun, which can prevent many attacks and deaths. Even though more gun control laws
won t eliminate attacks are mass shootings completely, it will help lower the number of attacks and
save more lives. Having these laws may not seem like it can do much now, but it will make it harder to
get a gun in in the future and lower the chances of it falling into the wrong hands. Another reason
there should be more gun control laws is because it will help to create more jobs and boost the
economy. With these laws, there would need to be more thorough background checks and interviews
that act as an evaluation if a person is mentally stable to own a gun. Since we are only doing the basics
right now, which is a quick background check, more people will need to be hired to do all of the work
that is needed. There is no method that will completely diminish the problem of guns falling into the
wrong hands, but the stricter gun laws can help to lower the rate. Also by introducing the stricter laws,
more people can benefit from what they create and allow people to have confidence in who is
receiving a gun.

The legislative branch is the most powerful out of the three. It consists of a House of Representatives
and a Senate which forms Congress. This branch has powers that the others depend on, such as the
executive branch because they rely on the legislative branch to vote in elections. One of the strongest
powers the legislative branch holds is being the only branch to make new laws or change existing
ones. The other branches have weaker powers because they can only veto laws, suggest new laws, or
question laws. The legislative branch has a 1 up on power over the other branches of government. I
think that the legislative branch has become too powerful. Even though I think that it has, it still gets
the job done because it is proficient with everything it does.. One example is the House of

The Irish Famine
The Irish will never forgive or forget what the British policies did to their forefathers. Of the Irish who
did successfully immigrated to the United States they quickly joined an associations that favored
Ireland s independence. The famine is what fueled the Irish emigrant anger and most of them viewed it
to be the reason for leaving Ireland in the first place. John Mitchel, journalist for the Nation, expressed
the emigrants angry sentiments when he wrote:
The Almighty indeed sent the potato blight but it was the English who created the famine that over a
million men, women, and children were quietly killed over a period of time. They died of hunger in
the midst of abundance which their own hands created. (Mitchel)

The Life Of The Landscape Essay
The landscape changed quite drastically as we left the lush rainforest behind and entered the semi arid
region in the South of Okanagan in British Columbia, Canada. Green fir trees made way for golden
rolling hills and scrubby terrain. Adding a splash of colour to the otherwise dry looking terrain were
the green vineyards perched against the gentle sloping hills. This might come as a surprise, but
Canada s only desert is home to a growing wine community with many award winning wines being
produced here. Welcome to Osoyoos.
As we approached the town, a large lake came into view. Osoyoos Lake is the warmest freshwater
lake in Canada and is surrounded by pristine vineyards along its perimeter. 37 wineries are now a
member of The Oliver Osoyoos Winery Association, a non profit organization with a goal to develop
the wine industry in Oliver and Osoyoos through education and promotion. While driving through the
region, we decided to visit a few well known and lesser known wineries and learn about their history.
Stoneboat Vineyards
We passed many picturesque wineries as we drove through the valley, each offering wine tasting to
anyone who is keen to sample their BC wine. We stopped at Stoneboat Vineyards, a family owned
winery only 20 minutes from downtown Osoyoos. The lovely Julie Martiniuk greeted us, who
together with her husband Lanny, purchased a 15 acre orchard in 1979 and planted their first vines in
1983. 40 Years later, they now have over 48 acres and are producing award

Wildlife Corridor Essay
Abstract
Proponents of the wildlife corridor concept suggest that by connecting otherwise isolated portions of
habitat, species benefit through gaining access to a larger gene pool, thus increasing their chances of
reproductive success. Despite the popularisation of this idea over the last several decades, a lack of
long term scientific research has led some to question this assumption.
Factors including the territorial, mating and migration behaviours of individual species of animal as
well as the lengths and breadths of corridors are all assumed to influence the effect of a corridor
individually. As such, a specific corridor may assist in defragmenting the population of one species,
but may not affect another in any significant way.
The vast tracts of land required by wildlife corridors make a considered assessment of their assumed
benefits an absolute necessity.
Introduction
The following paper aims to critique assumptions commonly made about wildlife corridors and to
assess claims that they make a significant impact to the defragmentation of wildlife populations.
Information from a variety of sources will be assessed in terms of its accuracy and relevance in an
attempt to determine if wildlife corridors are an effective method to increase localised biodiversity
levels. After key evidence both in favour against the concept has been presented, any relevant ideas
will be synthesised into a recommendation made at the end of the paper.
How the Wildlife Corridor Strategy Works

Importance of Early Childhood Education Essay
Importance of Early Childhood Education
Early childhood education is for children from the ages three to eight years old. In this field there are
four learning goals that early programs have for a young child.
The four learning goals are: knowledge (consists of facts, concepts, ideas, and vocabulary), skills (
small units of action that occur in short period of time), disposition ( respond to certain situations), and
feelings ( emotional states) ( Katz 2003). With an successful care giving and early education, it can
bring an positive outcome to a child s life. What a child learns in their early years are things that will
continue to helps them along in their future in school and in the real world. When a child is introduced

Not only does early education bring the benefit of interaction, it also lets the child feel loved and have
trust in others. If a child is encountered with early programs then they are able to meet the needs of
their child stage life. If these needs are not properly met, then they may become less successful in their
performance in an educational environment.
Learning Opportunities
There are many types of learning opportunities that can encourage a child to learn and help to enhance
their abilities. Child care centers are a great way to encourage a child to learn, and to be ready for the
school atmosphere. The Big Top Child Care Center in Laurel, Maryland have an excellent program for
children between two to nine years of age. They have an environment where teachers are well trained
and are first aid and CPR certified. They enhance a child s learning by providing them with nutrition,
educational field trips, and special events. Elementary schools are the opening door for early
childhood education. Children can begin their learning experience in pre kindergarten and
kindergarten which are the first grades of elementary education. Ring Factory Elementary located at
Harford county in Maryland is a school that has three kindergarten classes that teach five to six year
olds the beginning of their educational life. Not only are there child care centers and schools a great

Causes Of Learned Helplessness
Learned helplessness is approximately seen as cognitive individual variables that mirrors the habitual
manner where students exhibit the causes of bad events that occur them (Peterson Barrett, 1987; Lin
Peterson, 1990). Therefore, there are three causes that can impact students achievement because of the
bad events that students face which are internal against externality, stability against instability, and
globality against specificity. Thus, students who clarify bad events with the three causes internal,
stable, and global causes manifests more acute debilitation in their wake, passivity, and poor problem
solving. Indeed, these causes are called explanatory style, so explanatory style tends to be depressive
style. Nevertheless, explanatory

Love And Popularity In Romeo And Juliet Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is a romantic tragedy about two young lovers from feuding families who fall in love, however kill themselves due to a series of confusions. In the play, love and romance is a predominant theme, a powerful force which greatly influences the characters decisions and actions. Shakespeare uses a number of literary techniques such as oxymorons, imagery and dramatic irony to explore the theme of love and romance. Shakespeare s comparison of the ideas of love and hate demonstrates the unsettling love of Romeo towards Rosaline. Although Romeo is blindly in love with Juliet and is hopeful about their future, the audience are aware that the fate of Romeo and Juliet is predestined due to their family feud, and is unchangeable regardless to their relationship. Romeo changing his name will make no difference to the long standing feud between the Montagues and the Capulets, and this is seen in Act 5 Scene 3, when the two star crossed lovers kill themselves. Nowhere in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine joining the circus until 2 years ago. But I did anyway, for the same reason I got on the train car. Oliver was doing it. Oliver was my best friend since birth. He was 4 years, 3 months, and 2 days older than me (I figured it out exactly. I had a lot of my time on my hands nowadays.), and was basically the older brother I never had. Oliver used to be slim and tall, his chocolate brown hair was always slicked back and out of his eyes. Maybe it was the surge of excitement I got when I was offered to come along, or maybe it was my concern for Oliver that pushed me to make the decision. But after spending 2 years in the circus, I realized it was because of Oliver. It was always because of Oliver. I stole that candy bar because Oliver said he was hungry. I smacked that kid because he called Oliver a word I wouldn t be able to repeat at home, if I had one. He didn t ask, he wouldn t ask, I just did. IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT, VOL. 56, NO. 4, NOVEMBER 2009 663 An Investigation of Customization in ERP System Implementations Marcus A. Rothenberger and Mark Srite Abstract This research investigates why certain enterprise resource planning (ERP) system adopters have pursued high levels of software customization during implementation despite the generally accepted best practice heuristic of limiting customization. Qualitative data from ERP adoption projects and consultants working with ERP implementations have been collected. This study empirically identifies customization drivers and explains their relationship to customization. The results suggest that high customization may occur because of: unnecessary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Such decisions address the dilemma that all ERP adopters continuously face during the implementation: whether to change the business process to fit the ERP system or whether to change the ERP system to fit the business process. To minimize customization, the decision to change the ERP system should only be made in rare circumstances, e.g., when a business process cannot be changed without losing a competitive advantage. Furthermore, such decisions require cooperation between the information technology (IT) and the operational departments, following formal defined activities, which are part of a change management process. Thus, change management is instrumental to ERP implementation. In fact, it was listed as one of the top five factors in a study of chief information officer (CIO) perceptions of critical success factors for ERP projects [17]. The analysis of two implementation cases [7] confirms this notion as it identifies change management as one of the major success factors. The issue of management and employee readiness to implementing business process change is a common characteristic of successful implementations. In a case study of a failed SAP R/3 implementation [13], the absence of change management inhibited the broad involvement of employees in the implementation of business changes required for the successful adoption of the ERP system standard processes. The importance of business process reengineering and minimal customization was further confirmed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Layers Of Airport Security Identifying terrorists at airports is a very difficult task for homeland security professionals since terrorists can blend in very well with the more than 650 million law abiding passengers that travel every year via U.S. airports (United States Government Accountability Office, 2014). The security layered approach is a security strategy that helps reduce the risk of a terrorist infiltrating into an airport by employing a wide range of tools and programs that can enhance airport security (Hoggan, 2012). As mention above, all layers of security have some weak points and the Secure Flight program is not the exception. It may be very difficult for DHS to be able to effectively screen suspicious individuals without disrupting the flow of passengers since the screenings of suspicious individuals may take longer in comparison to those passengers who do not pose a threat or are not considered suspicious. Therefore to combat the Achilles heel of the Secure Flight program, DHS has created the TSA pre check program. The TSA pre check is a program in which passengers, usually those passengers who travel frequently, voluntarily submit themselves to extensive background investigations and if the passenger is able to meet the requirements posted by DHS, then the passenger will be allowed to go through expedite screenings when they travel as the passenger will be considered by DHS a Trusted passenger ... The perfectionist s home seems to always be positioned in the middle of a perfectly manicured lawn. The artist has treasures and flowers in abundance. Though our yard is small and sparsely decorated, its lone ornamentation a worn trampoline given to my siblings and me when we were still young enough to enjoy it seems to speak volumes about my family and our day to day life. • 17. Symbolism In William Golding s The Lord Of The Flies Authors have a sneaky way of revealing the greater themes that they are writing about in their books. They reveal themes by using symbols to represent both the actual person or object and also a deeper, hidden meaning. Placed through the story, symbols can be discovered if the reader takes a close thoughtful look. In William Goldings, The Lord of the Flies, a group of school boys are involved in a plane crash that leaves them stranded on a deserted island. The boys slowly begin to lose their civilized nature and start turning into primitive savages. Golding uses symbols throughout his story to demonstrate their crumbling society. The three most important symbols in the novel are the conch shell, The Lord of the Flies and the face paint or masks. The conch shell symbolizes the law and order of the boys old world, the adult world in which the boys are used to following rules in. When Roger destroys the conch, chaos quickly takes over because there is no leader or way to call a meeting anymore. When encountering the title of this scholarly journal, Psychoanalysis, Gothic Children s Literature, and the Canonization of Coraline , I was excited to delve into the gothic terrain of the subconscious. However, Chloé Germaine Buckley s paper does not give us a straightforward analytical reading, but instead challenges the dominant modes of interpretation when dealing with children s literature. Buckley engages with Neil Gaiman s Coraline, challenging some of the critical responses to the book, as well as drawing in some foundational literary criticism authors and thinkers such as Sigmund Freud, Roland Barthes and Lewis Carroll. Buckley s intention with this paper is to oppose restrictive interpretations of Coraline, as she posits the book to be far more complex than most examples of children s literature. Freud s Uncanny , gothicism, and psychoanalysis have been posited as the best tools for approaching children s literature by the critics Buckley intends to circumvent. She believes these methods are a tangled mess that confuse origin with originality, that mistake the interpretation of Coraline s influences as interpretations of the book itself. Buckley notices that Gaiman has drawn satirically from Freud, offering a crash course for children on psychoanalysis and the uncanny. With this in mind, Buckley wants to make room for more postmodern interpretations that engage intertextuality and satirical elements, in order to fully appreciate the scope of Gaiman s book. ... • 20. Summary Of Experiential Learning In the reading Experiential Learning: Experience as the Source of Learning and Development by David Kolb (1984), he proposed that learning is a cycle process in which individuals learn through their own experiences in life. This notion of the learning cycle in which he was influenced by the ideas of three other theorists (Piaget, Dewey, and Lewinian) called it Experiential Learning Theory. Kolb s theory was based on how people learned by imputing information and processing the information. Within this two abilities, there are four steps in which Kolb s believe the learning process occurs. The first one he calls concrete experience , in which one actually does the learning right then and now. The second one is reflective observation when the learner thinks about what they did as a reflection of the experience. The next step is the abstract conceptualization , where the learner makes a generalization of the experience. The last step is active experimentation , where the learner puts to practice his/her understanding and adapts to it. The learner does this by taking all the first three steps of the learning cycle and seeing the results (pg. 30). Learning is a process in which individuals learn through trial and error. This process can then be reused with our prior experience to strengthen the outcome of our first experience. It is shaped as a cycle in the way we process information cognitively. • 21. The Importance Of Relative Fitness chosen genotype survives; but this must be the same as the probability that a randomly chosen individual survives, regardless of information on genotype. Relative fitness. The relative fitness of a genotype (w) equals to its absolute fitness when get normalized. In the most common normalization, the absolute fitness of each genotype is divided by the absolute fitness of the fittest genotype (Barton and Turelli, 1989), such that the fittest genotype has a relative fitness of one. We can also define a selection coefficient (s), a measure of how much worse the A2 allele is than A1. Mathematically, w2 = 1 s. Although the definition of relative fitness is simple, the mathematical relationship between absolute and relative fitness is subtle (Bazykin, 1969; Betzig, 1986 and Beatty, 2008). In particular, there is a curve of diminishing returns between these two quantities i.e., increasing the absolute fitness of a genotype by some amount has less effect on relative fitness (compared with the mean relative fitness) than does decreasing the relative fitness of the genotype by the same amount. The importance of mathematical implication of fitness is straightforward i.e., when zygotes attempt to mature, selection acts, killing some. • 22. False Interpretation In Revelation Chapter 12 The beginning of Revelation chapter 12 states that a great sign or wonder appeared in heaven. This sign was the image of woman clothed with sun, the moon was under her feet and she had twelve stars on her head. Over the many years since the Apostle John described this sign there has been many false teachings about who this woman is. One of the erroneous teachings is that the woman is the Church. Matthew Poole in his commentary on Revelation chapter 12 stated I find all valuable interpreters agreeing, that this woman represented the church, well enough compared to a woman. This interpretation neglects that further down in the chapter that the woman is described as pregnant and at the point of giving birth. The church is described in 2 Corinthians chapter 11 verse 2 as the chaste virgin beginning presented to Christ not as one who is giving birth to Christ. Another example of false interpretation is applying it to be symbolic of all goddesses in multiple cultural contexts. Tina Pippin proposes such an interpretation in her work Revelation/Apocalypse of John where she states She has been interpreted as many things: the image of Israel, of Mary, of Ishtar, of Inanna, of Isis, and more recently of Our Lady of Guadalupe (a merger of Mary with the Aztec goddess Coatlaxopeuh). The diversity of this goddess images fits easily into a variety of culture contexts as a symbol of power One final example of false interpretation of this passage is that the woman is ... These three men were catalysts for the growth of education throughout the nineteenth century, and without them the large strides America took during this time would not have occurred. These great men all shared one goal: to educate the youth of America as well as possible. The next point he makes is that some high school history textbooks neglect examination of social class and depicts as a middle class nation full of opportunities for class mobility despite the drop of middle class people and the widening gap between classes. Another main point Loewen focuses on is that social class effects sectors of a person s life like their health, environment, education, and financial opportunities. To appeal to his points, he primarily uses ethos and pathos when he is trying to appeal to his audience. For instance, Loewen uses ethos to express his knowledge about the subject by sharing his research results about textbooks and providing other peoples studies to fortify his points about social class s effect on people. Loewen utilizes pathos by appealing to his readers emotions by choosing language that expresses his displeasure of students having a limited understanding of the classes by using words like half formed and naïve. Unfortunately, that is how the world works, people are labeled and associated with certain groups. These labels force people into thinking that they have to look a certain way or follow popular trends. Just like Susannah Calahan in Brain on Fire, she suffers from an illness and during her recovery she criticizes herself based off of what society expects her to look like. Social norms are deeply entrenched in everyone s life to the point where Susannah tries to hide her sickness and put on a strong face just to avoid being labeled as abnormal. There is a sense of her fear of being ridiculed and alienated from her loved ones since she does not fulfill the common image society has on women. Susannah is embarrassed by her actions, her appearance and she refuses to accept that her new self is even a part of her identity. Susannah does not view her post illness appearance as acceptable despite having no control over the outcome. Identity is in fact a matter of social construction since Susannah s self esteem and perception of herself deteriorates as she finds herself deviating from what is considered normal. Paul Robeson s chapter The Power of Negro Action is rather straightforward from the outset. Robeson is presenting an empowering piece, which has several subsections relating to the central theme of collectivized action on the behalf of black people. One of the more interesting aspects of this chapter comes from the way in which Robeson calls for black people to use their agency to better their position. From the outset Robeson states, I say that Negro action can be decisive. I say that we ourselves have the power to end terror and to win for ourselves peace and security throughout the land (Robeson, 90). The interesting aspect of this quote is the fact that the paragraph proceeding it establishes the historical precedent of blacks not necessarily enacting the full degree of their agency. However, Robeson s call proclaiming the power of black agency contrasts this and shows a progression toward the growing sentiments of blacks having more power than dominant society would like to portray. Robeson exclaims that the power that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Even though many people already own guns and they can t be taken away because of the Second Amendment, it can prevent those who shouldn t own a gun from buying one. Implementing more laws would make it harder to own a gun, which can prevent many attacks and deaths. Even though more gun control laws won t eliminate attacks are mass shootings completely, it will help lower the number of attacks and save more lives. Having these laws may not seem like it can do much now, but it will make it harder to get a gun in in the future and lower the chances of it falling into the wrong hands. Another reason there should be more gun control laws is because it will help to create more jobs and boost the economy. With these laws, there would need to be more thorough background checks and interviews that act as an evaluation if a person is mentally stable to own a gun. Since we are only doing the basics right now, which is a quick background check, more people will need to be hired to do all of the work that is needed. There is no method that will completely diminish the problem of guns falling into the wrong hands, but the stricter gun laws can help to lower the rate. • 43. The Irish Famine The Irish will never forgive or forget what the British policies did to their forefathers. Of the Irish who did successfully immigrated to the United States they quickly joined an associations that favored Ireland s independence. The famine is what fueled the Irish emigrant anger and most of them viewed it to be the reason for leaving Ireland in the first place. John Mitchel, journalist for the Nation, expressed the emigrants angry sentiments when he wrote: The Almighty indeed sent the potato blight but it was the English who created the famine that over a million men, women, and children were quietly killed over a period of time. They died of hunger in the midst of abundance which their own hands created. (Mitchel) These sentiments started ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. The Life Of The Landscape Essay The landscape changed quite drastically as we left the lush rainforest behind and entered the semi arid region in the South of Okanagan in British Columbia, Canada. Green fir trees made way for golden rolling hills and scrubby terrain. Adding a splash of colour to the otherwise dry looking terrain were the green vineyards perched against the gentle sloping hills. This might come as a surprise, but Canada s only desert is home to a growing wine community with many award winning wines being produced here. Welcome to Osoyoos. As we approached the town, a large lake came into view. Osoyoos Lake is the warmest freshwater lake in Canada and is surrounded by pristine vineyards along its perimeter. 37 wineries are now a member of The Oliver Osoyoos Winery Association, a non profit organization with a goal to develop the wine industry in Oliver and Osoyoos through education and promotion. While driving through the region, we decided to visit a few well known and lesser known wineries and learn about their history. Stoneboat Vineyards We passed many picturesque wineries as we drove through the valley, each offering wine tasting to anyone who is keen to sample their BC wine. We stopped at Stoneboat Vineyards, a family owned winery only 20 minutes from downtown Osoyoos. The lovely Julie Martiniuk greeted us, who together with her husband Lanny, purchased a 15 acre orchard in 1979 and planted their first vines in 1983. 40 Years later, they now have over 48 acres and are producing award ... • 46. Wildlife Corridor Essay Abstract Proponents of the wildlife corridor concept suggest that by connecting otherwise isolated portions of habitat, species benefit through gaining access to a larger gene pool, thus increasing their chances of reproductive success. Despite the popularisation of this idea over the last several decades, a lack of long term scientific research has led some to question this assumption. Factors including the territorial, mating and migration behaviours of individual species of animal as well as the lengths and breadths of corridors are all assumed to influence the effect of a corridor individually. As such, a specific corridor may assist in defragmenting the population of one species, but may not affect another in any significant way. The vast tracts of land required by wildlife corridors make a considered assessment of their assumed benefits an absolute necessity. Introduction The following paper aims to critique assumptions commonly made about wildlife corridors and to assess claims that they make a significant impact to the defragmentation of wildlife populations. Information from a variety of sources will be assessed in terms of its accuracy and relevance in an attempt to determine if wildlife corridors are an effective method to increase localised biodiversity levels. After key evidence both in favour against the concept has been presented, any relevant ideas will be synthesised into a recommendation made at the end of the paper. How the Wildlife Corridor Strategy Works ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 49. Causes Of Learned Helplessness Learned helplessness is approximately seen as cognitive individual variables that mirrors the habitual manner where students exhibit the causes of bad events that occur them (Peterson Barrett, 1987; Lin Peterson, 1990). Therefore, there are three causes that can impact students achievement because of the bad events that students face which are internal against externality, stability against instability, and globality against specificity. Thus, students who clarify bad events with the three causes internal, stable, and global causes manifests more acute debilitation in their wake, passivity, and poor problem solving.
