This document discusses multicarrier PWM topologies for a five-level cascade H-bridge multilevel inverter. It begins with an introduction to multilevel inverters and their advantages over traditional two-level inverters in reducing harmonic distortion. It then describes the cascade H-bridge multilevel inverter topology and various multicarrier PWM modulation schemes, including phase disposition, phase opposite disposition, alternate phase opposite disposition, and vertically/horizontally shifted carriers. The document presents simulation results in MATLAB that analyze the effect of modulation index on output voltage total harmonic distortion for different PWM schemes. It finds that vertically shifted PWM topologies generally have lower THD compared to other schemes.
