This document discusses a carrier-based PWM control technique for a modular multilevel converter (MMC) used in a variable frequency drive (VFD) without an intermediate DC bus. Key points: 1. An MMC-based VFD without a DC bus is proposed to improve efficiency over traditional VFD configurations with an intermediate DC link. 2. A phase-shift carrier PWM (PSCPWM) modulation technique is used to control the switching of converter cells. 3. A capacitor voltage balancing algorithm sorts capacitor voltages and activates submodules accordingly to maintain balanced voltages based on arm current direction.
