The Great Technological Evolution And Emergence Of Social...
In the wake of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, the United States went into defensive
mode, increasing surveillance and dismantling privacy rights. The Patriot Act was hastily passed just a
month later in October 2001 and it severely limited the privacy of Americans and gave unprecedented
power to the government and private agencies to track innocent Americans, turning regular citizens
into suspects.5 In addition, the great technological evolution and emergence of social media that
occurred round the same time, and shortly thereafter, created the perfect storm for the emergence of
the largely unregulated surveillance society that we live in today.6 The result is digitization of people s
personal and professional lives so that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Without government knowledge, Finch begins to save this data and he recruits Reese to investigate the
people, identified only by their social security number, that The Machine has determined will be
involved in the crime. While the series evolves into a critique of the artificial intelligence that is The
Machine, the pilot episode provides an example that is the epitome of post 9/11 surveillance on U.S
television. In the pilot, Reese is given access to all surveillance feeds that computer genius, Finch, can
access, in order to investigate the imminent crimes detected by The Machine. This includes phone
lines, whether in use or not, and government and private surveillance cameras. He uses this access to
determine whether the person of interest is the criminal or the victim, after which he ascertains their
plan and then prevents the crime from happening. Just thirteen years after The Truman Show, Person
of Interest provides a clear critical shift from that of The Truman Show. The show presents the
pervasiveness of modern surveillance, to the point that its production style and images remediate
surveillance technology by using digital targets superimposed over the filmed footage to track those
flagged by The Machine, as if the viewer was watching a real time surveillance feed. However, it
never suggests that the extent of this surveillance is negatively excessive. Rather, it suggests that such
surveillance, which is so

The British Soldier As A Drunken Brute
The beginning of the nineteenth century found the British army already engaged for the last seven
years in a war with the French. This war to oppose Napoleon would last until 1815, by which time the
British would be victorious. This triumphant British army, although successful throughout their
campaign with the French, was not openly considered a humble and advantageous force for society. In
fact, the common stereotype and popular image of the British soldier was negative, as the Duke of
Wellington stated the soldiers were the scum of the earth who have all enlisted to drink .1 For the
majority of the soldiers, this label was given inappropriately and carelessly. The Autobiography of
Sergeant William Lawrence, a British soldier who fought in the Peninsula and Waterloo Campaigns
during his fourteen year military career, offers an insight into the lives of the labelled soldiers and
interpretation of whether this label can be deemed accurate.
The idea of the British soldier as a drunken brute is inaccurate. The men who enlisted to fight against
Napoleon were more often than not forced to do so out of economic necessity. Soldiers delinquencies
seemed to many contemporaries to be the unavoidable result of the type of men who enlisted. 2 The
British army was made from voluntary enlistment, and this was thought to have produced a body of
army that was inferior in both character and discipline to the past British armies. For the volunteers,
the promise of regular food and

Social Variation Of American English
There are many social variation in American English, they are associated with age, gender, sexual
orientation and ethnicity. Recently, several linguistic trends to investigate the speech of women, one of
these is vocal fry. Vocal fry is speech that is very low pitched and creaky sounding shaped by a slow
movement of the vocal cords. It considered to be a voice disorder (Tamasi, P132). Also people tend to
have a lot of negative attitude towards vocal fry.
Creaky voice is been used by movie star Mae West in a film from 1933 (Tamasi, P132). Since the
1960s, the vocal fry, falsetto and modal have been put into the three lowest vocal register. Vocal fry is
be notice in recent decade, so people might not know when it started to use, and complete history of it
yet. However, we know it had been added in to music, such as pop singer Britney Spears, used vocal
fry as a way to reach low notes and as style. Later, more and more music stars and women doing it.
People can heard vocal fry in music, radio stations, and television shows (Fessenden). People use
vocal fry increasing nowadays. The prescriptive grammar does not say about this item, because it does
not relate to grammar. It relates to voice pitch and speech pathology. Is it is vocal fry consider to be a
speech pathology? In one hand, Originally it was studied as a speech pathology, something that
occurred due to injury or some sort of congenital defect. Today we know it can be done as an

Ventilator Associated Pneumonia ( Vap )
Ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP) is among the most fatal hospital acquired infections, with
mortality ranging from 15% to 70%. Ventilator associated pneumonia is also known to increase length
of stay which directly affects unit budgets. In 2010 the institute for health care improvement added
daily oral care with chlorahexidine to the five evidence based interventions which include, (1) head of

Racial Discrimination And Capital Punishment
Racial discrimination and capital punishment has been a heated topic discussed ever since the 1972
case Furman v. Georgia. In the article, Does Racial Discrimination Make Capital Punishment Wrong?
by Stephen Nathanson, his position in this argument is affirmative as he argues that racial
discrimination makes capital punishment wrong since death penalty is administered in an arbitrary
manner. Arbitrariness is the quality of being determined by chance or impulse, and not by reason or
principle. He claims capital punishment has been used disproportionately and arbitrarily since black
people who murder are more likely to be executed than white people. His position rests on an
argument from analogy. He gives two analogies, in which he compares two cases which he explains
one, that he tells his class that anyone who plagiarizes will fail the course. Three students of his
plagiarize papers, but only one receives a failing grade. The other two, in describing their motivation,
win his sympathy. The second analogy, in his child s birthday party, he offers a price to the child who
can solve a particular puzzle. Three children, including his own solve the puzzle. He cannot reward
them all, so he gives the price to his own child. He states in these cases that the people involved are
treated unjust because it would have been better to fail no one that to fail a single student. Or to give
the prize to no one than to his child alone. He undermines his critics initial arguments

Introduction
Public Relations as a profession first gained its presence in China in 1980s, by western concepts and
industrial practices being introduced from several international agencies which entered into this
uncultured market at the earliest (Hugh M. Culbertson Ni Chen, 1996). The emerging industry had
shown its huge potential in an increasingly healthier environment due to the policies of reform and
opening up and the development of market economy (Ni Chen, 2009).

The Importance Of Hair Designs In Ancient Egypt
The ancient Egyptians were one of the first world civilizations to exist on our planet being the first to
set parameters. I often wonder if they knew they were the first. When they were creating things such
as the toothbrush and the calendar did they feel like they were inventing for all of humanity? Or, were
they just creating things based on their needs in the present moment not realizing the impact it would
have on the Africa and beyond? After my research, I found out that they were the original creators of
one of my deepest passions the art of barbers. The ancient Egyptians believed that being clean shaven
was a sign of good hygiene and class. This belief inspired them to create sharp stones that would trim
their hair; by advancing this technology they were able to carve out the first barbershop industry in
world civilization. The deep desire of intricate hair designs or braids, short hair or shaven heads, or the
desire for hair wigs organically led to the need of tools that could revision their hair. In research done
by W. Flinders Petries describes the relationship of hair design in ancient Egypt by stating, There were
periods when the head was clean shaven, others when it was left to grow, cropped short or worn
shoulder long or even longer by both men and women. Egyptians invention of the first barber tools
begin 6,000 years ago where nobles crafted their barber tools out of sharpened flint, shell, or stone. As

The Four Key Trade Policy Of The European Union Legislation
When Poland joined the European Union legislation, it has led to wide ranging reforms in economic
regulation and has decreased government intervention in the private sector. Changes in areas such as
financial markets, company and competition law, accounting, and intellectual property rights have
improved the environment for private business and increased economic growth. The European Union
trade policy and regulation sets the direction for trade and investment in and out of the European
Union. There are four key trade policies that the EU is working towards. Firstly, to create a global

Margaret Atwood Siren Song
Olivia McCuaig
Ms. Serensky
AP English 12
03 November 2014
Margaret Atwood s Siren Song : Song with No Rhyme Margaret Atwood s poem Siren Song gives a
unique view on the societal roles of women. Atwood, often considered a feminist writer, gives women
a powerful role in many of her works. During the 1960 s, the time that Atwood wrote her poem, a
large feminist movement ensued in the United States that aimed to dismantle workplace inequality.
The first person speaker in Atwood s poem, a siren woman confined to an island with the job of
attracting men, resembles her strong opinion on the roles women should play in society. As the siren
waits to lure men in with her song, she expresses a strong dislike towards her job. Atwood refrains
from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The siren allures men with a song / that is irresistible (2 3). The absent rhyme scheme juxtaposes the
rhythm of the song which creates an example of rebellion against her job and place in society. Atwood
s use of enjambments creates an alluringly suspenseful tone regarding the subject of the song. Despite
the pleasant connotation of irresistible, Atwood acknowledges the siren s distaste in her position and
offers her view that women should not succumb to the place society puts them in. To lure men in, the
siren offers, I will tell the secret to you (19). The allusion to Greek mythology relates to how the siren
uses her song to lure men in to their deathly fate. The siren indirectly characterizes herself as
deceptive as she knows the men will never hear her secret, because they will die before they can. The
enjambments suggest that the siren keeps the men waiting to know the secret about the song as the
lines move along. Atwood expresses her feministic views through the siren s annoyance with her job
of constantly attracting men. Her avoidance of a rhyme scheme furthers the siren s insurgency towards
her beguiling song. Despite the siren s irritation with her obligation, she admits it works every time

Becoming A Major Music Producer
The career in music that I want to pursue is becoming a major music producer and songwriter. My
goal is to be like the major producers in the music industry and lead the sound in popular music, be
able to be at a caliber of artists like Max Martin, Timbaland, Kanye West, Justin Timberlake, and Jon
Bellion. The steps I plan to follow to achieve this goal begin with studying music, I d start with all
kinds of music at first to get a good grasp of music structure and content. I think it s very important to
fully understand how most, if not all music is made, from the chord progressions, melodies, drum
patterns, vocal techniques, tones, and lyrical content that is used in each genre, especially music that is

This leads into step four of my plan where I d start working on my own project, with the musical skill

point where my skills and style have been sharpened to where I at least I have an idea of how to make
a good song. While producing the project, I would work on gathering a team to help with the release
of it. Mainly focusing on advertisement and knowing how to spread It (social media mainly because it
seems like the best option.) I d release the project for free because I don t feel like you can release
music as a new artist and have people want to pay for it in this day in age. Also collaborating with
other people with followings as an artist instead of being behind the scenes of the music making.
Through this form of releasing music, I feel like you re more likely to grow an organic fan base and a
devoted following. Even though I would have supposedly made songs for

Illegal Drugs vs. Psych Ward Drugs
The definition of drugs ranges from supposedly positive to automatically classified as negative. But
who is to say which drug is bad and which drug is considered good. In the movie entitled 12 Angry
Men the director Terry Gilliam used this film to bring about an idea that I had to rethink. This movie
was released on the 27 of December in 1995, this movie s genre is often questionable but for the most
part it is an Action, Thriller, Sci Fi. The two characters that the drugs affected the most were the main

The definition of a Drug according to dictionary.com is A chemical substance, such as a narcotic or
hallucinogen, that affects the central nervous system, causing changes in behavior and often addiction
and A substance used in the diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of a disease or as a component of a
medication. Being a controlled substance we automatically classify drugs as an illegal act that is not
often accepted. In our society today you can go to jail for possession and possession with intent to
supply. Our generation is receiving years in jail or the misuse and overdose of drugs. Drugs are abused
everyday by teens and adults and often looked down upon. Numerous accidents have occurred do to
the abuse of some drugs. Drugs in our society today are initially thought of as bad, and then we come
to the understanding that there are other types of drugs that may in fact not be bad but used for good.
Illegal drugs are portrayed in our society as really bad, but the use of drugs is abused in psych wards
and other facilities also. From previous research I learned that Thorazine is an antipsychotic drug,
used as a major tranquilizers. So it is ok for our government and other higher authority to allow the

White Privilege And Black Privilege
The term privilege is when a person has the right or confused with having the right to do something.
For example, for someone to advance their education is not a privilege perhaps it is a right. In some
cases during certain situation person can be granted the privilege. White privilege is a word greatly
used in social rights that advantage individuals to be acknowledged as white in Western countries, afar
what is frequently proficient by non white individuals in the same social, political, or economic
conditions (Rothenberg, 2016). However, when a certain race color is treated more superior than
another race is giving the advantage or benefit to have the opportunity to do anything they want
without anyone trying to stop them.
According to the authors, what practice(s) create white privilege is viewed in their own unique
perspective but, it all fits up under one category of a specific race having the advantage to have their
freedom to do what they like. Based on McIntosh view that whites in Western societies adore
recompenses that non whites do not practice, as an undistinguishable package of unjustified assets
(Rothenberg, 2016). White freedom represents together evident and not as much of evident submissive
rewards that white people may possibly not identify they require, which differentiates it from explicit
favoritism or preconception. In fact, they have been accepted as the better social status in addition to
freedom to move, buy, work, play, and speak freely. It

Excuses In Everyday Life, By Bernard Roth
Bernard Roth, a Professor at the d. school in California, has an impressively valid outlook as to why
all reasons given are bullshit. Roth provides numerous examples of people who use regularly use
excuses to manage everyday life; however, he also plays the devil s advocate when stating that
excuses may help you in the current situation but will it assist you at all in the long run? In the second
chapter of his book, Roth classifies the use of excuses into several categories; ethically, logically, and
emotionally. Although I understand Roth s beliefs, there are multiple areas I fundamentally disagree
with. Such as, some excuses must be explained no matter what the circumstances were since the
reasoning is important. Roth would rebuttal by saying reasons have no meaning which in turn goes
back to having no excuses. Utilizing an abundance of forms of thinking, is Roth s strategy when
emphasizing his point. He explains to every student the three possible rationalizations for excuses.
Once again, he suggests every excuse is bullshit, and has no place in an individual s life. Excuses
ultimately hamper an individual s ability to reach for his or her dreams. Bernard Roth, author of, The
Achievement Habit, stop wishing, start doing and take control of your life effectively uses Aristotle s
rhetorical triangle in chapter two, his argument contains ethos, pathos, and logos to authenticate the
thought that the reasons are bullshit. Roth s credibility and experience are

Another economic trait is that India is divided into three major zones: the dry Deccan plateau, the

the Indian Ocean as a plateau, which lacks much of melting snow that leads into rivers and causes
unproductive agriculture, arid parts, and populated sparsely. The Gangetic Plain is watered by mighty

For a copyright, an author must distinguish the requirement of originality, which means, The work
owes its origin to the author, is independently created and not copied from other works. (Macrina,
2014 p.299). in regards to a patent, the inventor must distinguish the requirement of novelty. Novelty
is defined as the invention must not have previously existed in any way or have been used by other
individuals. For an inventor to prove novelty they must also prove the invention has not been
described in a publication worldwide (Macrina, 2014 p.299). Obviously, the requirement of originality
is much easier to prove than the novelty of an invention, which results in copyright infringement being
difficult to prove since the individual must have evidence of not only similarity but verbatim copying
of the original work. When filing to have a patent on an invention or subject matter, the main criteria
are, It must be useful, new or novel, nonobvious and reduced to practice. (Macrina, 2014 p.306).

When studying Arthur Neville Chamberlain, it is at least as important to understand his personality, as
well as his political achievement. The Prime Minister of Great Britain between 1937 and 1940, he was
an intensely idealistic man, one who believed that he alone could bridge the gap between Germany
and the rest of the World. His subsequent policies of appeasement towards Nazi Germany, a policy
based upon pragmatism, fear of war, or moral conviction that lead to the acceptance of diplomatically
imposed conditions in lieu of warfare, forever characterized Chamberlain as a most central figure at
the diplomatic crossroads leading towards World War II.

We cannot foresee the time when our defences will be strong enough to safeguard our territory, trade
and vital interests against Germany, Italy and Japan simultaneously . This concern about the threat of
German aggression grew when the Anschluss between Austria and Germany was finalised in March
1938. However, Chamberlain did not want to form alliances in Europe, as this kind of collaborative
could result in supporting a conflict which Britain did not want, and could not afford at the time.
Many, including Chamberlain, were of the opinion that the Treaty of Versailles had been unduly harsh
on Germany. Consequently, Chamberlain was prepared to give Hitler a fair hearing as he viewed such
treatment as potentially advantageous for both countries.
One of the main areas that Chamberlain is criticised over is his acceptance of Hitler s assertion that the
only reason Germany was interested in the Sudetenland was his desire to unite all Germans. After his
first meeting with Hitler in Berchtesgaden on September 15th 1938, Chamberlain wrote in a letter to
his sister that I got the impression that here was a man who could be relied on when he had given his
word . Although Hitler is famous for his ability to manipulate people s opinions, Chamberlain was an
experienced politician, who could presumably read

Compare And Contrast Christianity And Buddhism
Around the world there are many people with many different beliefs. Although there are many beliefs,
Christianity and Buddhism will be the topics for today. These two religions have spread throughout
the world and have influences many individuals. The way these religions are practiced show an
immense amount of the culture and origins it originates from. First of all, Christianity is originated
from Israel around the time of 30 CE lead by Jesus of Nazareth. It is practiced in North America,
South America, Europe, and Russia. Christianity is such a huge religion that there are other forms of
it. Some of the other forms Christianity are Catholic, Protestant, Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox,
Restorationism and Nontrinitarianism, Independent Catholicism, and Minor branches. Although there
are many different forms of Christianity, they all share the same values and customs. Some of those
customs include the belief that there is one God in three forms, Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. These
three forms are all God, but they are not each other. For example, Father is God, but Father is not Son.
Son is God but Son is not Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit is God but Holy Spirit is not Father. Now what do
Christians belief in? They belief that when you die, death is like being in eternal sleep with no
conscious of time or what s going on around you. Jesus said to her, i am the resurrection and life. He
who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in

The Aging Quiz Analysis
The Aging Quiz, by Linda M. Woolf, Ph.D., Webster University is a 25 statement, true or false test,
declaring common beliefs held by most United States individuals. First impressions of the quiz
revealed many statements were obviously stereotypical in nature. On further inspection, I noticed the
date of the publication was 1977 and 1980. My speculation is these misconceptions of seniors may
have evolved in the last several decades. With that said, I did find the explanation of the answers
informative. There were no substantial surprises in the answers, two of three wrong answers
concerned physical aspects, and one could be deemed as social/physiological and I believe I did well
on the quiz. Addressing that I did not find some surprising answers in the quiz made me wonder if my
level of education provided the primary reason. Recent classes covering subjects concerning the senior
aspects marriage and family, chronic diseases, anatomy, physiology, nutrition, and exercise supported
this idea. An interesting anecdotal note is I gave the test to my 77 year old mother. With only a tenth
grade education, she scored very similar to myself getting most of the same ones wrong. That
supported my ideas the quiz may be a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The sense of touch was the reason I answered false. That sense was not addressed at all in the answer.
Vision appears to be the universal sense that declines with age, while auditory loss may be more of a
cultural or modern result. An interesting side note concerning the loss of smell. I recently read about a
study that loss of smell can be a predictor of death in five years. (Jayant M. Pinto, 2014). I answered
true to Pain is a natural part of the aging process. I did not take into consideration that pain in just a

Abuse Power In The Crucible
Another lesson I learned from reading The Crucible, is to not abuse power. Abusing power is using
power to an advantage in a bad way. Good leaders use their power to influence people in a positive
way, while bad leaders use their power mainly for personal benefits. In the play, many of the
characters with power abused it. They took complete control of situations influencing other characters
to do bad things. One character from the book that abuses his power is Judge Danforth. Danforth ran
all the trials for the witches , and was completely unfair. He made it basically impossible for an
accused witch to be innocent. He also didn t allow suspects to have lawyers or anyone give
information that disagreed with him. He considered different opinions as contempt of court . When
Mr. Nurse was clashing with Danforth over the issue, Danforth said, do you know who I am, Mr.
Nurse? (Act lll, Scene l) This shows that Danforth has the cocky mindset that he is above everyone.
Good leaders should be able to listen to critics. Danforth believed that everyone accused was a witch;
so he didn t even bother giving them a fair chance. Many people died under his signature. He used his
power to contribute to the destruction of the town and many lives. Another example from the book
deals with the ringleader of the group of girls caught in the woods; Abigail Williams. Abigail
happened to be the leader of the group, and was completely evil. Abigail was able to influence a whole
group of girls to

Barriers to Entry and Exit (Symbian)
Market entry and exit constitute major business strategy decisions reflecting a strategic initiative on
the part of a firm to develop, or reshape, its product or market positioning
Barriers to entry are obstacles in the way of firms attempting to enter a particular market, which may
operate to give established firms particular advantage over investment. They are factors that allow
incumbent firms to earn positive economic profits, while making it unprofitable for new comers to
enter the industry. Barriers to entry may be structural or strategic. Structural entry barriers result when
the incumbent has natural costs or marketing advantages or benefits from favorable regulations.

In this case, even though Microsoft has been very familiar with what the Symbian OS is trying to
offer, giving mobile phones the ability to function like that of a personal computer, including e mail,
web browsing, electronic messaging and digital photography, it would be costly for them to develop
their windows mobile software in that direction with the bulk of the mobile phone manufacturing
market share in the hands of the companies using the Symbian OS as a base for their products.
This phenomena, however, was only seen for a short period of time as Microsoft was both huge in
both technological advances and financial capabilities. With WM6, they successfully integrated into
the mobile phone market, incorporating touch screen interface for their operating systems and working
with major business phone manufacturers such as HTC and LG. As such, Microsoft hopes that the
industry would develop the way they did for the computing industry.
Thus far, we do not really see a shift in that arena, with Symbian having tied up virtually the entire
market, and also the 3 3.5G era in its infant stage, only time will be witness to whether the cellular
market moves in the same direction. o Marketing Advantages in incumbency
As mentioned above, major mobile phone manufacturers have come together, developing the Symbian
OS as a barrier to entry to Microsoft. In that sense, with the major companies holding bulk of the
market share, they stand to gain many

Evaluation Of A Research Project
6.1 Introduction and overview
This section describes the methodology used for the research. It considers first the philosophical
position agreed for the research, then the methodology involved in the research. In this case, the
research was made up of a focus group, using a sample of young people and adults with LDD and a
small number of parents and carers who completed questionnaires. The methods of data analysis were
then documented, and the final section reflects on issues of validity and reliability.
6.2 Philosophical position
It is understood that all research is centred on the researchers motivating philosophical assumptions.
Smith and Wood s opinions are that worldviews and philosophical positions are the basis for making
... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore, these worldviews and philosophical assumptions are what researchers have endorsed to
carry out their research along with their chosen methodologies for the expansion of gathering new
knowledge in a given study (Frels and Onwuegbuzie, 2016). Therefore, to conduct and evaluate any
research, it is important for that reason to know what these assumptions are.
6.3 Epistemology foundationalism
It is explained that Epistemology is a term that describes the nature of knowledge and the means of
knowing; how we know what we know or what we conceive as a truth (Kuada, 2012, p.59) and the
way knowledge is created and constructed or revealed and fixed (Wisker, 2011). Epistemology also
provides a philosophical background for deciding what kinds of knowledge are legitimate and
adequate, which helps with the most novice of researchers who quickly select a data gathering method
as they are keen to get on with the job (Gray, 2011).
Positivism is seen as being concerned with gathering facts about a reality that is seen as real
(Silverman, 2006) in order to explain human behaviour (Bryman and Bell, 2011). In opposition to this
is interpretivism that seeks to understand human behaviour (Maylor and Blackman, 2005), whilst
constructionism holds the belief that as reality is socially constructed and subjective there are multiple
realities, Berger and Luckman

Buddhism And Buddhism In Japan
Since people were born in Japan, they have always lived with goods and events related to Buddhism,
but they have not realized the existence of them. Regarding the worldwide view, there are many
customs, rituals, foods, and culture all over the world. Japan also has religion, but some people say
that Japan has no clear religion when they argue about that. However, is it true? In fact, Buddhism has
close relationships with Japanese lives. There are three reasons why Japanese people are religious are
rooted in Buddhism.
Some people say that Buddhism has no relationships in Japanese lives today, but actually, there are
many high points related to Buddhism and Shinto. Japan has two major regions, Shinto and
Buddhism. Shinto has a longer history than Buddhism, while Buddhism was imported from the Asian
continent to Japan in the 6th century. Shinto is believed to have developed from animism. Animism is

Shinto shrines are places of worship. Japanese people visit there to feel respect for the god or praying
for good fortune. Torii and komainu, the equipment of shrines, have meanings related to Buddhism

temple, they should behave calmly and respectfully. It is essential to show their respect to pray in front
of the sacred object. When entering temple buildings, they may be demanded to take off their shoes
because the owners of the buildings think the buildings are sanctuary places. How to visit shrines is
almost same as how to visit temples. However, that there is a purification fountain in the shrine differs
from the temple. When Japanese pass the entrance of the shrine, they may fill the water with their
hands and cleanse their hands both. They are not permitted to swallow the water from the purification

Avoiding Scholarship or Grant Schemes Essay example
Avoiding scholarship or grant scams can be as simple as the student makes it. The internet is a
powerful tool for business, so students can t just avoid it because of a few crooks or conmen even if
they do seem like they re behind every pop up window and banner ad. When looking for scholarship
or grants it is difficult to avoid scams so students need to avoid applications that require fees and
personal identification numbers. It s not that hard, students just have to look out for the warning signs.
They must keep in mind that these warning signs, of course, are only for a handful of the frauds and
scams out there. Conmen are good at what they do, trying to separate students and consumers from
their money. Most of these warning signs ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Students only usually need to hand out some of this information when they have received the
scholarship or grant. This is only because most scholarships are taxable because they look at it as a
source of income, but when they go file for taxes they can more than likely get it written off for
educational purposes. There are a few other simple warning signs that students and consumer must
keep in mind. For example if the organization sounds like a non profit but has no traceable history.
This means that the organization sounds like its not getting a profit but probably is . Also consumers
or students cant check it out and see because they have no traceable history. Basically like the site or
organization doesn t really exist they just want them to feed them personal information so they can
take their money. If the organization claims it will handle all their scholarship applications for them
this should be a warning. Never trust anything that seems too good to be true. All in all, scams are
easy to avoid. Now that the warning signs are out there, avoiding scams and conmen should be easier.
Just remember the golden rule, mentioned previously in the essay, if they have to pay money to get
money, then it is more than likely a scam. There are many frauds and conmen out there looking for a
quick way to make fast cash. Also, never give out personal information. A consumers identity could
easily be taken because of poor judgment of

What Are The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Driverless Cars
1. Consumer Behavior Models
Consumer behavior eventually leads to the decision or choice between alternatives. In most cases it is
a decision whether to purchase, consume or use a service. The process of this decision making is
rather complex and it is influenced by, other than the price factor, the psychology of the consumers,
their socio cultural environment the past experiences. The consumer decision making can be modelled
as a system operating with an Input or stimuli, the actual decision making Process which then results
in a reaction or Output (Schiffman. L.G, Kanuk. L)

Several manufactures like Tesla, Mercedes etc., have already demonstrated their autonomous driving
technology and many other companies aim to roll out vehicles with driverless capabilities by 2020.
While it s still pretty early to forecast how autonomous vehicles will impact the lives of humans, there
are some clear advantages and disadvantages of driver less cars.
According to the NHTSA (2013), driverless cars are defined as:
Those in which operation of the vehicle occurs without direct driver input to control the steering,
acceleration, and braking and are designed so that the driver is not expected to constantly monitor the
roadway while operating in self driving mode .
One direct inference from the definition is a significant freeing of time and efforts for the driver which
could be potentially used for other value added activities. Indirect inference would be also a better
utilization of the civil infrastructure as a result of the advanced technology. While an obvious
disadvantage would be the cost of ownership, legal issues insurance in case of accidents. 6.1 Potential

Analysis Of The Film Thief Of Bagdad
One thing the film did not do so well was an accurate representation of the Arabian people.
There was a great deal of obvious race bending going on amongst the main leads. Maybe this
could be chalked up to a lack of Arab actors or inherent racism in Hollywood at the time,
however, most of the main characters were portrayed by Caucasian actors. John Justin
and Conrad Veidt, portray the lead characters of Jaffar and Ahmad the sultan in brownface,
whereas Sabu is Indian and portrays an Arabian thief. Throughout the film, I could not help but
get a sense of how the Arabian culture was being romanticized through a Western lens. I could
almost argue that, had this film been directed by someone of a different race other than
Caucasian, the outcome and casting decisions for main leads would most likely have been
different due to wanting to attain a higher level of cultural authenticity.
The Thief of Bagdad was directed by non AAPI filmmakers Ludwig Berger, Michael Powell
and Tim Whelan. Given this information, I can see how someone as a director would want to
glamorize a culture in order to make it more visually appealing to audiences despite it being
culturally inaccurate. At the time, Asians were still very much underrepresented in film and many
roles would be lost to Caucasian actors so as to resonate with American audiences. It is
fair to argue that had this film been handled by someone who shared the culture, certain
directions would have

Americas Colonization
The seeking of power and new lands started all the way back to centuries ago. It was the time were
Empires colonized the Americas establishing their own sets of rules that the Native Americans in the

Spanish and Portuguese established their Empires in the Americas, creating all new political structure,
religious believed, economical changes and social interactions.
Let s begin with explaining the foundation of every nation, this is obvious; politics. Without the latter
content people will have a disorganized, uncivilized, unstructured and violent society. Spain was
considered to be monarchy, since it was ruled by a queen and king during the sixteen and seventeen
centuries. It got so much power and territory that it was considered the largest Empire in history. Their

  • 2. The Great Technological Evolution And Emergence Of Social... In the wake of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, the United States went into defensive mode, increasing surveillance and dismantling privacy rights. The Patriot Act was hastily passed just a month later in October 2001 and it severely limited the privacy of Americans and gave unprecedented power to the government and private agencies to track innocent Americans, turning regular citizens into suspects.5 In addition, the great technological evolution and emergence of social media that occurred round the same time, and shortly thereafter, created the perfect storm for the emergence of the largely unregulated surveillance society that we live in today.6 The result is digitization of people s personal and professional lives so that ... Without government knowledge, Finch begins to save this data and he recruits Reese to investigate the people, identified only by their social security number, that The Machine has determined will be involved in the crime. While the series evolves into a critique of the artificial intelligence that is The Machine, the pilot episode provides an example that is the epitome of post 9/11 surveillance on U.S television. In the pilot, Reese is given access to all surveillance feeds that computer genius, Finch, can access, in order to investigate the imminent crimes detected by The Machine. This includes phone lines, whether in use or not, and government and private surveillance cameras. He uses this access to determine whether the person of interest is the criminal or the victim, after which he ascertains their plan and then prevents the crime from happening. Just thirteen years after The Truman Show, Person of Interest provides a clear critical shift from that of The Truman Show. The show presents the pervasiveness of modern surveillance, to the point that its production style and images remediate surveillance technology by using digital targets superimposed over the filmed footage to track those flagged by The Machine, as if the viewer was watching a real time surveillance feed. However, it never suggests that the extent of this surveillance is negatively excessive. Rather, it suggests that such surveillance, which is so ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The British Soldier As A Drunken Brute The beginning of the nineteenth century found the British army already engaged for the last seven years in a war with the French. This war to oppose Napoleon would last until 1815, by which time the British would be victorious. This triumphant British army, although successful throughout their campaign with the French, was not openly considered a humble and advantageous force for society. In fact, the common stereotype and popular image of the British soldier was negative, as the Duke of Wellington stated the soldiers were the scum of the earth who have all enlisted to drink .1 For the majority of the soldiers, this label was given inappropriately and carelessly. The Autobiography of Sergeant William Lawrence, a British soldier who fought in the Peninsula and Waterloo Campaigns during his fourteen year military career, offers an insight into the lives of the labelled soldiers and interpretation of whether this label can be deemed accurate. The idea of the British soldier as a drunken brute is inaccurate. The men who enlisted to fight against Napoleon were more often than not forced to do so out of economic necessity. Soldiers delinquencies seemed to many contemporaries to be the unavoidable result of the type of men who enlisted. 2 The British army was made from voluntary enlistment, and this was thought to have produced a body of army that was inferior in both character and discipline to the past British armies. For the volunteers, the promise of regular food and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Racial Discrimination And Capital Punishment Racial discrimination and capital punishment has been a heated topic discussed ever since the 1972 case Furman v. Georgia. In the article, Does Racial Discrimination Make Capital Punishment Wrong? by Stephen Nathanson, his position in this argument is affirmative as he argues that racial discrimination makes capital punishment wrong since death penalty is administered in an arbitrary manner. Arbitrariness is the quality of being determined by chance or impulse, and not by reason or principle. He claims capital punishment has been used disproportionately and arbitrarily since black people who murder are more likely to be executed than white people. His position rests on an argument from analogy. He gives two analogies, in which he compares two cases which he explains one, that he tells his class that anyone who plagiarizes will fail the course. Three students of his plagiarize papers, but only one receives a failing grade. The other two, in describing their motivation, win his sympathy. The second analogy, in his child s birthday party, he offers a price to the child who can solve a particular puzzle. Three children, including his own solve the puzzle. He cannot reward them all, so he gives the price to his own child. He states in these cases that the people involved are treated unjust because it would have been better to fail no one that to fail a single student. • 8. The Importance Of Hair Designs In Ancient Egypt The ancient Egyptians were one of the first world civilizations to exist on our planet being the first to set parameters. I often wonder if they knew they were the first. When they were creating things such as the toothbrush and the calendar did they feel like they were inventing for all of humanity? Or, were they just creating things based on their needs in the present moment not realizing the impact it would have on the Africa and beyond? After my research, I found out that they were the original creators of one of my deepest passions the art of barbers. The ancient Egyptians believed that being clean shaven was a sign of good hygiene and class. This belief inspired them to create sharp stones that would trim their hair; by advancing this technology they were able to carve out the first barbershop industry in world civilization. The deep desire of intricate hair designs or braids, short hair or shaven heads, or the desire for hair wigs organically led to the need of tools that could revision their hair. In research done by W. Flinders Petries describes the relationship of hair design in ancient Egypt by stating, There were periods when the head was clean shaven, others when it was left to grow, cropped short or worn shoulder long or even longer by both men and women. • 10. Margaret Atwood Siren Song Olivia McCuaig Ms. Serensky AP English 12 03 November 2014 Margaret Atwood s Siren Song : Song with No Rhyme Margaret Atwood s poem Siren Song gives a unique view on the societal roles of women. Atwood, often considered a feminist writer, gives women a powerful role in many of her works. During the 1960 s, the time that Atwood wrote her poem, a large feminist movement ensued in the United States that aimed to dismantle workplace inequality. The first person speaker in Atwood s poem, a siren woman confined to an island with the job of attracting men, resembles her strong opinion on the roles women should play in society. The siren allures men with a song / that is irresistible (2 3). The absent rhyme scheme juxtaposes the rhythm of the song which creates an example of rebellion against her job and place in society. Atwood s use of enjambments creates an alluringly suspenseful tone regarding the subject of the song. Despite the pleasant connotation of irresistible, Atwood acknowledges the siren s distaste in her position and offers her view that women should not succumb to the place society puts them in. To lure men in, the siren offers, I will tell the secret to you (19). The allusion to Greek mythology relates to how the siren uses her song to lure men in to their deathly fate. The siren indirectly characterizes herself as deceptive as she knows the men will never hear her secret, because they will die before they can. The enjambments suggest that the siren keeps the men waiting to know the secret about the song as the lines move along. Atwood expresses her feministic views through the siren s annoyance with her job of constantly attracting men. Her avoidance of a rhyme scheme furthers the siren s insurgency towards her beguiling song. Despite the siren s irritation with her obligation, she admits it works every time (27). Roth provides numerous examples of people who use regularly use excuses to manage everyday life; however, he also plays the devil s advocate when stating that excuses may help you in the current situation but will it assist you at all in the long run? In the second chapter of his book, Roth classifies the use of excuses into several categories; ethically, logically, and emotionally. Although I understand Roth s beliefs, there are multiple areas I fundamentally disagree with. Such as, some excuses must be explained no matter what the circumstances were since the reasoning is important. Roth would rebuttal by saying reasons have no meaning which in turn goes back to having no excuses. Utilizing an abundance of forms of thinking, is Roth s strategy when emphasizing his point. He explains to every student the three possible rationalizations for excuses. Once again, he suggests every excuse is bullshit, and has no place in an individual s life. Excuses ultimately hamper an individual s ability to reach for his or her dreams. Novelty is defined as the invention must not have previously existed in any way or have been used by other individuals. Arthur Neville Chamberlain CHAMBERLAIN AND APPEASEMENT When studying Arthur Neville Chamberlain, it is at least as important to understand his personality, as well as his political achievement. The Prime Minister of Great Britain between 1937 and 1940, he was an intensely idealistic man, one who believed that he alone could bridge the gap between Germany and the rest of the World. His subsequent policies of appeasement towards Nazi Germany, a policy based upon pragmatism, fear of war, or moral conviction that lead to the acceptance of diplomatically imposed conditions in lieu of warfare, forever characterized Chamberlain as a most central figure at the diplomatic crossroads leading towards World War II. We cannot foresee the time when our defences will be strong enough to safeguard our territory, trade and vital interests against Germany, Italy and Japan simultaneously . This concern about the threat of German aggression grew when the Anschluss between Austria and Germany was finalised in March 1938. However, Chamberlain did not want to form alliances in Europe, as this kind of collaborative could result in supporting a conflict which Britain did not want, and could not afford at the time. Many, including Chamberlain, were of the opinion that the Treaty of Versailles had been unduly harsh on Germany. Consequently, Chamberlain was prepared to give Hitler a fair hearing as he viewed such treatment as potentially advantageous for both countries. One of the main areas that Chamberlain is criticised over is his acceptance of Hitler s assertion that the only reason Germany was interested in the Sudetenland was his desire to unite all Germans. After his first meeting with Hitler in Berchtesgaden on September 15th 1938, Chamberlain wrote in a letter to his sister that I got the impression that here was a man who could be relied on when he had given his word . Although there are many beliefs, Christianity and Buddhism will be the topics for today. These two religions have spread throughout the world and have influences many individuals. The way these religions are practiced show an immense amount of the culture and origins it originates from. First of all, Christianity is originated from Israel around the time of 30 CE lead by Jesus of Nazareth. It is practiced in North America, South America, Europe, and Russia. Christianity is such a huge religion that there are other forms of it. Some of the other forms Christianity are Catholic, Protestant, Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Restorationism and Nontrinitarianism, Independent Catholicism, and Minor branches. First impressions of the quiz revealed many statements were obviously stereotypical in nature. On further inspection, I noticed the date of the publication was 1977 and 1980. My speculation is these misconceptions of seniors may have evolved in the last several decades. With that said, I did find the explanation of the answers informative. There were no substantial surprises in the answers, two of three wrong answers concerned physical aspects, and one could be deemed as social/physiological and I believe I did well on the quiz. Addressing that I did not find some surprising answers in the quiz made me wonder if my level of education provided the primary reason. Recent classes covering subjects concerning the senior aspects marriage and family, chronic diseases, anatomy, physiology, nutrition, and exercise supported this idea. • 25. Abuse Power In The Crucible Another lesson I learned from reading The Crucible, is to not abuse power. Abusing power is using power to an advantage in a bad way. Good leaders use their power to influence people in a positive way, while bad leaders use their power mainly for personal benefits. In the play, many of the characters with power abused it. They took complete control of situations influencing other characters to do bad things. One character from the book that abuses his power is Judge Danforth. Danforth ran all the trials for the witches , and was completely unfair. He made it basically impossible for an accused witch to be innocent. He also didn t allow suspects to have lawyers or anyone give information that disagreed with him. He considered different opinions as contempt of court . When Mr. Nurse was clashing with Danforth over the issue, Danforth said, do you know who I am, Mr. Nurse? (Act lll, Scene l) This shows that Danforth has the cocky mindset that he is above everyone. Good leaders should be able to listen to critics. Danforth believed that everyone accused was a witch; so he didn t even bother giving them a fair chance. Many people died under his signature. He used his power to contribute to the destruction of the town and many lives. Another example from the book deals with the ringleader of the group of girls caught in the woods; Abigail Williams. • 33. Analysis Of The Film Thief Of Bagdad One thing the film did not do so well was an accurate representation of the Arabian people. There was a great deal of obvious race bending going on amongst the main leads. Maybe this could be chalked up to a lack of Arab actors or inherent racism in Hollywood at the time, however, most of the main characters were portrayed by Caucasian actors. John Justin and Conrad Veidt, portray the lead characters of Jaffar and Ahmad the sultan in brownface, whereas Sabu is Indian and portrays an Arabian thief. Throughout the film, I could not help but get a sense of how the Arabian culture was being romanticized through a Western lens. I could almost argue that, had this film been directed by someone of a different race other than Caucasian, the outcome and casting decisions for main leads would most likely have been different due to wanting to attain a higher level of cultural authenticity. The Thief of Bagdad was directed by non AAPI filmmakers Ludwig Berger, Michael Powell and Tim Whelan. Given this information, I can see how someone as a director would want to glamorize a culture in order to make it more visually appealing to audiences despite it being culturally inaccurate. At the time, Asians were still very much underrepresented in film and many roles would be lost to Caucasian actors so as to resonate with American audiences.
