Iodination of Salicylamide Purpose The purpose of this experiment is to study the directing effects of
substituents on an aromatic ring. Aromatic rings do not undergo electrophilic addition reactions
instead they undergo electrophilic aromatic substitution. The study will be made from the reaction of
the electrophile, iodide ion with sodium hypochlorite, with salicylamide that has a hydroxyl group
(ortho /para directing) that is highly activated, electron donating, and an amide group (meta directing)
that is deactivating, electron withdrawing. The effects of the resulting substitution patterns will be
done by analyzing infrared (IR) spectroscopy of the product to determine where on the ring the iodine

Stonehenge and its Astronomical Significance Stonehenge is a megalithic monument found in
Wiltshire, United Kingdom. It was built in three phases. The first phase was the earthwork monument
which begun in 2950BC, the second phase was the timber monument built in 2900BC and thirdly the

The Black Walnut Tree by Mary Oliver begins with the line My mother and I debate . There are two
characters introduced: the narrator and her mother. In a typical family, there is a mother, daughter, and
father. The lack of a father in this introduction stands out. This is furthered by the line two women
trying / in a difficult time to be wise . The author highlights the lack of the father once again by saying
two women , in order to clearly demonstrate the lack of male, fatherly figure. Lacking a fatherly figure
makes the phrase a difficult time more meaningful; it implies that not only has the family become
poor, the family has also lost its patriarch. Later in the poem, however, the narrator dream[s] / of my
fathers out of Bohemia / filling the blue fields . The author uses alliteration here with blue and
Bohemia , and even further back with brighter and blood . The use of the letter b is kind of forceful
and proud, which entails with the message the poem is sending. The imagery in this part of the poem

The stories Black Men in Public and Champions of the World relate to me in similar ways. Authors
Staples and Angelou have had gone through challenging experiences and have been discriminated and
stereotyped; they share my beliefs that we should not judge by someone s skin color or by appearance.

Jacobus Henricus van t Hoff, a Dutch physical and organic chemist, was born in Rotterdam,
Netherlands on August 30, 1852. Out of a family of seven children Jacobus was the third child. As a
student of a private school, he was interested in nature, science, and mathematics.
In 1869 he attended Delft Polytechnic Institute, and thus received his technology degree two years
later. Desiring not to be a technology professor, van t Hoff decided to focus his study on chemistry and

study chemistry. From the Netherlands he journeyed to Bonn, Germany to work with A.F. Kekule, and
