Medical Advances Throughout History And History
Medical advances throughout history has provided people the safety and comfort of knowing that
whatever illness befalls them, there is will be a treatment regimen that will bring relief.
Vaccinations has prevented and nearly eliminated many childhood diseases. Maintenance medications
provide a way for older adults to manage their chronic medical conditions. But there are some medical
conditions that are also chronic, but with no cure available. One such condition is HIV, or human
immunodeficiency virus. According to Tortora, HIV is the pathogen causing the loss of immune
function that selectively infects helper T cells (545). My goal in this paper is to show the advances
modern medicine has achieved in discovering the different ways to combat this disease, whether it is
attacking the virus directly or assisting our own body s ability to fight infection.
Vaccinations are usually are our first line of defense at preventing diseases. According to
Haynes, isolation of potent broadly neutralizing antibodies (bnAbs) assist CD8T cell killing of HIV
infected cells, have opened new avenues for strategies for HIV vaccine design (39). These antibodies
recognize a protein that is present on the surface of all HIV strains and neutralize the effects of the
virus. The problem researchers have here is that, with vaccination, a person builds up their own
immune response rather quickly. But with HIV vaccines, the antibodies are produced after two to four
years of infection due to these

dynasties. It was a home for twenty four emperors. The palace consists of nine hundred buildings and

Furthermore, on the roof form, the column beam and strut also permits several roof styles. First is
Zuanjian , pyramid shaped roof. The other one is Wudian , a hipped roof, and Xieshan , a combination

forty five degree angles. However, another most outstanding Chinese traditional characteristic,
through stylistic, is Dougong , a combination of block and supporting arm. Dougong has been use ever
since Han Dynasty, fifth century B.C. to third century A.D, and developed itself to reached peak point
in Tang and Song dynasty, from seventh to thirteen centuries. More importantly, it preserved the
structural integrity of the wooden framework, functioning the collar beam in modern architecture.
Dougong gradually shrank in size and lost its important as a structural member to become a stylized
traditional decorative, in Ming and Qing Dynasties. By the use of dougong, it demonstrates a progress
in the beginning as the technical standard then reached the apex point, and finally turned down to an
insignificant role as a stylistic element. Another example of architectural development in style during
Ming and Qing Dynasties is the garden element. The landscape garden design has gone through a long
historic phase of development. The garden evolved into two types, royal and private gardens. The
private garden served to the residences for enjoyment, relaxation, and living

Individuals With Disabilities Education Improvement Act (EBD)
Introduction School is one of the fundamental milestones every child and adolescent goes through
when developing into an adult. Often these developmental periods are described as a time of
emotional turmoil (Santrock, 2014). However, when the added stress of a behavioral or emotional
disorders (EBD) is coupled with basic development, there are several issues that can arise. Within
academic settings, the common debate is what a proper placement is for students diagnosed with
emotional behavioral disorders. Academic achievement is essential for proper cognitive development.
Hall (2008) states that factors like intelligence, self esteem, inclusion and decreasing bias all

Essay On Counterculture In The 1960s
One of the most exciting things about studying more recent history is almost intrinsically connected to
the advent of the photographic camera, which offers spontaneous imagery of events in the moment
that the artwork of the past could only attempt to recreate. The transition from black and white with a
burst of color following the Second World War offered to the public eye a realistic representation of
events that they had not had the opportunity to experience before. Color photographs boomed in the
decades following the war, which provides historians today with a wide breadth of visual sources with
which to corroborate other materials. This is especially true when examining the documentation of the
counterculture in the 1960s. A book called Hippie compiled by Barry Miles offers a composite portrait
of hippies in America in the 1960s, contextualized with other images from other key events outside of
the realm of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although SDS had a number of issues they were passionate about in the mid to late 1960s, their most
crucial point of discussion revolved around the Vietnam War. It could be argued that the advent of the
war was one of the factors that contributed to the increasing militancy of the group, the group
eventually dissolving into multiple factions including the Weathermen. Similarly, the hippie
counterculture eventually developed a strong anti war sentiment regarding the American intervention
in Vietnam. However, the doctrine of love and pacifism resulted in the hippies never developing
militant behaviors in the way that the members of SDS did. This emphasis on non violence, as the 60s
and 70s went on, became an increasingly valuable point in which the hippies diverged from other
groups that shared similar foundational philosophies given that the growing unrest in America resulted
in, for many groups including SDS, more violent

Germany s Reunification Essay
Germany s Reunification
It was all so good in the beginning. In 1989, after
40 years of separation, the two Germanys finally
became one again. But as often, there were and
still are doubts about whether or not reunification
was the right move to do. The hope that two
different social, political as well as two different
economical and educational systems would grow
together neatly without major problems was Fig. 1.1 Source: German Reunification and the Present

Before reunification the East was a one party state, where the people never got to vote on the political
party they wanted to. They never got to express their views and ideas. Only the views of the State was
accepted. Almost everyone living in this system, had as much as 50 years experience of living under
this dictatorship and knew democracy only from the media [Christoph
Singelnstein]. After reunification, the people were finally able to experience what it was like to vote
for their country, and to express their own views. The people from the East had a choice in their future
and that of their country.
When the press was run by the State, there was no freedom of speech. Everything that was on the
radio, T.V., or in the newspapers had to be censored so not to contain any politically incorrect material.
Now, after reunification, there is freedom of speech, the people are allowed to express their opinions
without the danger of being arrested or even thrown into jail without any legal help. When East
Germany was a socialist state, there was no concept of privatised enterprises.
All factories and businesses were state owned, therefore all profit made from the various enterprises
went directly back to the State in order for the State to invest in its economy. The
State used it to create free health care and subsidized housing. As well, they invested large amounts of
money in

An Analysis of Titian s Painting Venus with a Mirror
Venus With a Mirror Introduction Venus With A Mirror was done by Italian master Titian (oil on
canvas) in 1555. Currently Venus With A Mirror is in the National Gallery of Art in the Andrew W.
Mellon Collection. The painting is 124.5 x 105.5 centimeters (49 x 41 x 9/16 inches). Titian
Biography and Background The Italian master was born in 1477 in Pieve di Cadore, Italy and died
August 27, 1576, in Venice, Italy. According to the Encyclopedia of World Biography (EWB) he was
either born in 1477 or in 1488 (both dates are given). Reportedly Titian (Tiziano Vecellio was his full
name) began studying painting at the age of 9; he and his brother initially were learning in the
workshop of mosaic artist Sebastiano Zuccati, but soon Titian had the opportunity study painting with
Giovanni Ballini (EWB). Soon thereafter Titian collaborated with Ballini s brother Giorgione; the two
worked on frescoes for the German Merchants Exchange. It is said that the work of Titian and
Giorgione was so similar that it was hard to tell them apart. The first actual commission that Titian
received was to produce ¦three large frescoes in the Confraternity of St. Anthony in Padua, Italy. Next
Titian began his great mythological works, including Flora (Florence) and Sacred and Profane Love
(EWB). Those pieces were well received and next it is said that Titian firmly established his hand as a
quality interpreter of classical mythology when he completed The Andrians, the Worship of Venus

Attention Deficit Disorder Essay
Attention Deficit Disorder Attention Deficit Disorder otherwise known as ADD is a condition that
refers to an individual s inability to control their own behavior or impulse(McEwan 70). This can
begin in early childhood and interfere with children s ability to do well in school and social situations.
These patients also have troubles blocking out noise or other stimuli in order to focus on a task or
what is being said. ADD is a chronic problem that can be seen as early as infancy and can extend to
adulthood. There are two types of Attention Deficit Disorder. The most common form is Attention
Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD). The characteristic of this type is hyperactivity, which is seen

It is also more prevalent with in boys than in girls. In babies that have been prenatal exposed to drugs,
including alcohol, cocaine, amphetamines, and heroin, ADD needs to be carefully watched for.
Increasing numbers of premature infants are found to have the disorder as well. A psychiatrist or
clinical or school psychologist usually makes a diagnosis. In order to do this, physicians,
psychologists and educators conduct an evaluation that includes a health and developmental history,
medical evaluation, psychological and educational assessment, behavior rating scales completed by
the parents and teacher, and possibly a speech and language evaluation (Miller 25). Hyperactivity is
the most obvious symptom. Children with this condition are unable to control their actions even under
the most closely monitored situation. Parents often expect that certain foods cause hyperactivity, but
children with ADD are hyperactive even though these foods are not part of their diets. Other primary
symptoms include inattention, distractibility, impulsiveness and short attention span. There are
problems with organization and transitioning from one activity to another. The disorder can be
complicated by other kinds of learning and/or behavioral problems as well. Thought patterns may be
loose and poorly organized. Children have difficulty with memory, following directions and

Sahelian Trading Routes
Sahelian Trading Routes Trade routes played an essential role when considering development in the
Sahel region, given that states in the area have thrived as a consequence of supporting these respective
routes. Slave trade with Islamic states was especially significant in the development of states in the
Sahel region. Trading across the continent facilitated the wellbeing of individuals living in Sahel and
thus created an intriguing contrast between these states and other nations living in the upper and lower
Saharan areas. Trans Saharan trade occurred as early as the Roman Empire and it was actually one of
the reasons why the Romans were able to continue to support the Empire. In large measure, the
prosperity of Carthage in Roman times was due to its control of the trans Saharan trade routes,
through which it received ivory, gold, and slaves (Anton). Even though the Muslims destroyed
Carthage and were partly responsible for the fall of the last thriving city in the Roman Empire, they
did not ignore the area s great potential. Conditions in Sahel continued to improve consequent to the
eight century Mahommedan expansion to Maghreb. Moors and Moroccans focused on taking control
of all trade routes reaching the heart of Africa and traversing the continent. This resulted in large
amounts of resources reaching the hands of Sahelian kings and thus making it possible for their
kingdoms to expand at a rapid rate. The tens of thousands of African states in pre colonial

Reasonable Persuasion Vs Probable Cause Analysis
Upon looking at the terms of reasonable suspicion and probable cause, one will believe that they both
mean the same thing but stated in two entirely different ways. Reasonable suspicion is the rational
conjecture that a crime has been, will be or is being performed based on the details and situations
presented along with the officer s knowledge and familiarity. Probable cause is supported by facts and
circumstance along the same lines of reasonable suspicion except that it includes concrete evidence
that is able to support the crime. Reasonable suspicion is when it looks as though a crime has been
performed and is used as validation for investigating suspicious behaviors. These are just two terms
that are meant to be deciphered by the public

Long Distance Running Advantages
The Benefits of Long Distance Running
Health professionals and the general public have thoroughly researched and discussed the advantages
and disadvantages of long distance marathon running; the physical and mental benefits make it
apparent that long distance marathon running is overall an activity that supports a healthy lifestyle.
Nathan Critchfield

Senior Project Research Paper
October 20, 2017
When considering the topic of health benefits and the risks of running long distances the well known
story of the original marathoner Pheidippides is often brought up. The story is often told that
Pheidippides, after running nearly twenty six miles from Marathon to Athens to declare that the
Athenians had won the Battle of Marathon, fell dead from exhaustion. This version of the first
marathon often casts a negative light on the health benefits of running. However, this is not the full
story. The real story involves Pheidippides traveling one hundred forty miles in an attempt to recruit
the Spartans to aid the Athenians in their upcoming battle; then running again the return trip to report
to the Athenians that aid would not be coming before the Persians arrived to battle. Finally, he ran the
twenty six miles to Athens to report the Athenian victory. That is when he finally collapsed from
wounds and exhaustion. From this tragedy, we see that at some point distance running can be harmful
or even fatal. The real question is, have marathons reached

Cameron s Speech On The 2011 Riots
In his speech on the riots, Cameron discounted social conditions such as poverty and unemployment
as reasons for the 2011 riots, and focussed instead on criminality and morality (Andrews, G. 2014).
This essay will compare and contrast this conservative view of the riots with the radical view. A riot is
an occasion involving violence directed at property, persons or authority. The current understanding of
the term riot dates back to the fourteenth century, when it began to suggest violence and disorder
among the population. By the eighteenth century violence and disorder was on the rise in England,
which resulted in Parliament passing the Riot Act of 1715. Conservatism is characterised for their
resistant to change, although when it is necessary, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The discussion on BBC News night highlighted the differences in the conservative and radical views
on the riots. Ian Kinsella described his concern at how the rioters would be controlled going forward.
He described how he pleaded with the rioters to stop, however was chased off and told You re insured
mate, you ll be ok! . Opposite Ian Kinsella was Cody Lachey, a proud mancunion who admitted to
dressing inconspicuously to partake in the looting. Cody Lachey had a change of heart and although
he fully supported the looters, he decided against looting. Kirsty the BBC news reporter pointed out
that Cody Lachey had served in the military overseas in Afghanistan and Bosnia, he also worked as a
security guard for large retailers, she questioned why he doesn t turn the looters in? Cody s response
Because I understand...We live in an impoverished society where people do what they have to do to
feed their families, and that s the life we re living. (The Open University, 2017). Cody s response is
one shared with a high percentage of the rioters, they blamed the crushing effect of poverty, parents
who have to work two or three jobs to make ends meet, parents who have no time for their children,
no childcare, increase intuition fees, closure of youth services and scrapping of education maintenance
and lack of respect from the police. It is believed 59% of those arrested for rioting were unemployed
and conceded their involvement in looting was simply down to opportunism, saying that a perceived
suspension of normal rules presented them with the opportunity to acquire goods and luxury items
they could not ordinarily afford. (Rusbridger, A. 2017). Martin Luther King once defined rioting as the
language of the unheard. This was a radical s view expressed by a youth worker shortly after the 2011

Elizabeth is thought to be one of the greatest queens in history. She faced much controversy because
of her parents and being a bastard child of King Henry VIII. Elizabeth: The Virgin Queen, starring
Cate Blanchett as Queen Elizabeth is a portrayal of the life that was thought to be lead by Queen
Elizabeth. The movie shows Elizabeth in the coming months before she becomes queen and her first
few years as a ruler. In the movie, Elizabeth is presented as a fun loving young woman who is not
bothered by her stance in society as the bastard child of a king. Before Elizabeth finds out that Mary is

He runs a military campaign that is unsuccessful thus leading him to being dismissed. Elizabeth

Essay about Crime in Latin America
Prisons for a long time have been a gateway to try to save society, when the only thing that it s doing
is hurting the social order because it s creating more problems that are not being treated from the
beginning. Crime has become a big problem during these hard times with the poor economy, but it has
especially affected Latin America because of all the problems that overcrowded prisons have brought
forward. In Latin America Brazil and Mexico are the two largest countries that have been affected

But this tends to not be possible because Brazil and Mexico are having troubles trying to sustain their
facilities. For example, in Brazil President Fernando Henrique Cardoso secured that he would increase
federal funding from $4.5 million to $33 million by 2001 so that Brazilian prisons can use it to build
more facilities. No matter what was promised many still doubt that this money for prisons will solve
them 2 main concerns that Brazil faces which is overcrowded prisons and corruption. As in now, there
are about 200,000 inmates in a system built to hold fewer than half that number. This is a clear
example of that issues that they have to work with in the country (BBC News).
Moreover, there are not details about a budget or the funding they receive in the Mexican prisons. The
only information available is that they spend about 130 pesos per day to care for 1 of the 210,000
inmates. This converts to 27 million pesos spent daily and about 9.93 billion pesos per year (Suverza

documents say this misuse of funds directly affects by authorities to fight crime. The lack of security
is due to a lack of resources for the anticipation and prevention of acts by criminal organizations, and

Effective Communication For The Workplace
Someone once said great communication is a skill that is needed in life. I believe great communication
can take an individual very far in life. Effective communication helps connect with people. It can open
many doors for many jobs. It lets the employer know whom they have hired, and how intelligent the
person really is. In the business profession, effective communication enables managers to give
understandable instructions to their employees. Effective communication will help state what is
expected from workers. I believe effective communication can be used in all aspects of the workplace.
First, Susan Adams from Forbes wrote Good grammar is important in life. Using correct grammar in
the workplace shows the intelligence of the worker. It also shows how well thoughts are put together
before speaking. Using good grammar can also show employers that an employee can accomplish
other tasks on the job no matter what it is. For example the employee can be asked to give a formal
speech because the employer trusts that the employee will use the right language when talking. Good
grammar also shows the company that the employee cares about his personal image, the company
image, and that s what makes the company stand out from other companies. Good grammar shows
who the person is, for example what type of establishment have they grown up around. It also shows
what type of people the company hires (Adams). Kyle Adams wrote in the Harvard Business Review,

College Cost In College
The author talks about college cost, and the effect it has on students and on how times it takes longer
to graduate. This is an important topic because college cost has been a problem for many individuals
for decades and it still is. College cost is something that shapes people s lives and it worries them
because college cost is what determines if they re going to continue going to college. It s something
that people should take lightly because college is pretty expensive. According to the advocacy group
complete college America, it cost 63,718 for one extra year to attend college. For students who take
longer to finish school because of certain requisites, it becomes a toll because of the cost. According to
Norton Field Guide to writing by Richard Bullock and Maureen Daly Goggin found a report on Los
Angeles bases campaigns for college opportunity, saying students who attend school 6 years instead of
4 years will lose 110,900 dollars in their lifetime. Many people in the work field and colleges expect
students to attend school for four years. According to the NFGW, nearly nine out of 10 freshmen think
they will earn their bachelor degree within the traditional four years. Yet In the NFGW quotes the U.S
Department of Education and they report that about 45 percent won t have finished.

State or Federal Tort Claims
The Constitution of the United States has the amendments in place to protect the citizens from the
violation of his or her rights by the government. The Federal Tort Claim Act of 1946 is enacted to
ensure the citizens of the United States will receive the proper compensation or if the citizens want to

Taro In Hawaii Culture
Growing up in Hawaii I knew that taro, also known as Colocasia esculenta, was something that the
state grew and loved. The Hawaiian word for taro is kalo. Not only is taro, or kalo, a part of the
Hawaiian culture, but it is their native diet as well. It is very popular that schools would go on field
trips to taro patches, but it is common that people would never really realize how important it actually
was. As Donna Haraway explained in The Companion Species Manifesto , a companion specie is
something that must include relationships with plants, insects, intestinal flora, etc., that all make life
what it is for humans (15). When talking about companion species, there cannot just be one

Because of this taro is one of the very few plants that can still live and grow under flooded conditions.
The plant takes almost a year to mature. Farmers understood that because it takes so long to grow,
they would use the plan wisely and take only what they had needed. There was a certain way to prep
the ground before planting taro. The ground had to be wet but still solid enough for the plant. In order
to prep the land, women, children, and men would step and pound on the ground, which applies
pressure to the dirt to make it more dense and packed. When the taro was ready to be eaten it would be
pulled out of the ground then prepped by being washed then cooked. Although Taro could be planted
in dry lands as well, it would be planted in areas that still had lots of forest

Preparation of Pure Culture
It is necessary to isolate organisms in pure culture before studying and identifying them because a
pure culture originates from one cell.
Characteristics colonies from the original culture on the plates were picked with a sterile wire loop
(using surface streaking method) and this loop was used to make streak of the colony on the surface of
newly prepared sterile agar plates of NA,MA amp; MSA.
These streak will space out the inoculants and discrete colony of a particular specie of organism and
then incubated at 35 37oC for 24hours to enhance microbial growth.
Distinct colonies were re inoculated on another fresh agar plates in order to obtain a pure culture. The
isolates were picked with sterile loop and streaked into prepared agar slants, labeled and incubated for
growth after which they were kept in the refrigerator for future use and identification. Identification of

Before Franklin is sent to France he went on another diplomatic mission. This one sadly was much
less successful. After America attempted to take over Canada due to a belief that the French were
explosively restive under the British yoke (Kennedy and Cohen 136) and failed when their assault on
Québec was beaten off on the last day of 1775 (Kennedy and Cohen 137), Ben Franklin, Samuel
Chase, and Charles Carroll were sent to Canada to persuade the Canadians to become the 14th colony
in rebellion against the British (Procknow). Because the rebels, under General Montgomery, lost at the

The Unkonwn Whereabouts of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370
The unknown whereabouts of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 that disappeared on March 8, 2014, has
left the families of the over 200 passengers aboard heartbroken and devastated. Thus far, rescue units
have failed to locate the massive Boeing 777 commercial jet, or any of the 227 passengers and 12
flight crew on it. This catastrophic event happened, and is failing to be solved, because of the lack of
necessary aircraft tracking, the struggle of knowing where to look, and what faith to lean on and
aircraft equipment failure.
Black boxes are modern electronic devices used now a days in some vehicles you see on the roads and
also aircrafts such as the Boeing 777 used for flight MH370. They gather and store important
information about the vehicles speed, altitude, time of day and engine conditions. The purpose of this
device is to solve any reasoning behind plane crashes, as the black box has enough information to
accurately tell you what went wrong, and why. So if a black box could be the answer to solving what
went wrong with this flight, then why hasn t it been solved yet? A modern plane like the Malaysia
Airlines Boeing 777 is jacked full of computers and sensors spinning out enormous amounts of data,
and yet the [black box] is connected to nothing. While it s up in the real clouds, the [black boxes]
systems have no contact with the technology cloud (Maney, 2014, p. 1 5). The only time the

General Douglas Macarthur Accomplishments
General Douglas Macarthur is most commonly known for what he did in combat, but it is also
amazing how successful he was during the US Occupation of Japan after World War II. In 1945,
Douglas Macarthur was nominated head of the Supreme Command of Allied Powers (SCAP), which
placed him in charge of the whole Occupation process. This was a very difficult job, which only
talented men like Macarthur could have handled. He was forced to make very hard decisions, which
are still relevant today. The American Occupation of Japan was undoubtedly the most successful
occupation, and possibly the only successful occupation of a defeated nation ever attempted.

The goal that America had was for Japan to become a Democratic nation. This goal was difficult to
accomplish because there were concerns of communism rising in Japan. The Americans believed
communism was a major threat and wanted no part of it in the US or Japan. It was important to steer
the Japanese people away from communism and towards Democracy. Macarthur used news systems in
Japan to spread democratic ideas and to allow the Japanese people to better understand democracy.
The lives of the Japanese people were changed by a few different things. For children, the education
system was modified, democratic ideas were encouraged. Laws regulating families were also changed
according to the new way of life. Macarthur arranged occupation policies to address the weakened
economy, and tax reforms were created and sent out to the people. There were also attempts to control
inflation. Besides the introduction of the Constitution, there was another major political introduction.
The supreme political institution had been changed to be the Parliament of Japan, the Diet, which was
to be made up of freely elected representatives of the people. Japan was not use to having a
parliament, but it was a good decision by Macarthur and has made Japan very successful. Macarthur

Swiss Army Man And The Myth Of Cain And Abel
Swiss Army Man the Myth of Cain and Abel
In the first book of the bible, the Book of Genesis, readers are introduced to the characters of Cain and
Abel. The myth of Cain and Abel relates to jealousy and rage, and how there are always consequences
for our actions. The morals that can be learned from Cain an Abel are still relevant today, but in
another format, such as in the poster for the 2016 film Swiss Army Man. The Swiss Army Man poster
and the myth of Cain and Abel have overlapping themes, such as death and isolation. These themes
are still prominent today, and the poster can serve as a modern day take on the centuries old myth.
The myth of Cain and Abel originates from the bible, and is best known for being a story of firsts.

God favored Abel s sacrifice of milk and meat over Cain s offering of fruits. This angered Cain, and
presumably out of jealously, he murdered his brother, Abel. Just as Cain was the first physical birth in
the bible, Abel is the first recorded death (and murder) of the bible. God questions Cain on the death
of Abel, and Cain lies and tells God that he did not murder his brother.
Although is has been interrupted in multiple ways, it is ultimately believed that Cain s jealously of
God favoring his brother s sacrifice in relation to his own is what lead to his rage and commitment of
murder. A main moral in the myth of the story of Cain and Abel is that jealously can lead to sin. Cain s
jealously of Abel is what causes him to lash out, and later lie to God about his actions to cover up his
original sins.

Localization of Brain Function
Localization of Brain Function
Psychologists have found that the brain often shows localization of function . This means that different
parts of the brain carry out different tasks, for example, vision, voluntary movement and speech. The
idea is that not all parts of the brain do the same thing, and that each part functions on its own, without
the aid of other areas of the brain. This may seem obvious, but other organs, such as the liver, do not
show localization of function; one part of the liver does the same thing as a part on the opposite side.
A famous example of brain localization is the case of Phineas Gage; a railway worker in 1848, who
one day, while trying to blow out a hole in the side of a mountain, had a metal rod shoot ... Show more

AD suffered cardiac arrest, which damaged his frontal and temporal lobes. The damage done caused
him to alter his personality when in the company of different people; gaining the patient the nick name
The Human Chameleon. When AD was in the company of lawyers, he would invent a detailed
background story to support his claim of being a lawyer. When in the company of a doctor, he would
do the same but claim to be a doctor. The interesting twist on his case is that AD had anosognosia; a
lack of insight into his odd behavior. This meant that AD truly believed his own lavish stories. His
condition is a form of anterograde amnesia, which caused him to forget everything prior to the cardiac
arrest, thus allowing him to invent past lives. The case of AD shows that the area that was damaged
(the frontal and temporal lobes) s function was not taken over by another area of the brain, as AD
never regained the memories lost in the accident.
However, psychologists have also found a counter argument for localization of brain function; and that
is brain plasticity. Brain plasticity is the idea that if one part of the brain stops functioning, another
part will take over that role. The idea of brain plasticity has been around for hundreds of years. The
ancient Greeks accepted the idea, believing that one could train their mind, just like training a body.
Around the time of Galileo, the idea was dismissed, as scientists began to see the world mechanically,

Capital Requirements and It s Role in the Financial Crisis of 2008 INTRODUCTION The financial
crisis of 2007 2009 sent shock waves around the world, affecting some of the world s largest financial
institutions, along with negatively impacting millions of American citizens. Who is to blame for such
a crisis and how do we try to prevent another? Well, the cause of this crisis is not merely that simple.
This crisis was caused by a complex series of events with all actors within the financial market to
blame. However, I wanted to understand how these various actors and causes all occurred while under
the supposed watchful eye of regulators, whose role within the market is based upon the regulation of
these financial institutions to prevent crisis from occurring in the first place. Regulators are
responsible for overseeing various components within the banking industry; however, one component
that I was most interested in was capital adequacy requirements. I wanted to understand why capital
requirements were created in the first place, how they had evolved over time and what role they
played in the crisis. Lastly, I believe that capital requirements are a self evident prevention method in
inhibiting the collapse of banks due to risky lending. Therefore, with the creation of adequate capital
requirements going forward, we could have one solution for a very complex problem. BANKING

EFFECT OF ONLINE SOCIAL MEDIA ON NEWSROOM OPERATIONS IN BROADCASTING
STATIONS IN KENYA: A CASE STUDY OF KENYA BROADCASTING CORPORATION
TEROI FELIX KBET

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
Technology has always been at the forefront of newsgathering and the journalistic process. The last
century has seen visual, audio and digital innovations contributing greatly to changing the way
journalists think about and engage in their work. Yet these technologies have not by themselves
redefined what it means to be a journalist, in the professional sense Lasorsa, Lewis Holton (2011).
Social media is affecting the way a local television news station presents information to its audience
and how its audience in turn receives information. The adoption of social media, in particular Twitter
and Facebook have made a significant impact on how people choose to receive their news and
information
The widespread adoption of social media and increased online activity by media organisations has led
to the adoption of new ways of processing, collecting and dissemination news worldwide.
1.2 History of Kenya broadcasting corporation.
The Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) was first established in 1928 when the British were

He has scaled the mountains of ignorance, he is about to conquer the highest peak: as he pulls himself

[v] Though Jastrow treats the issue as settled and declares that scientists have finally been defeated, it
is too early to reach any judgements on the implications the new cosmology has for both science and
religion. Our image of the origin of the universe is not yet complete and further investigations must be
conducted before the towel is thrown in. Science has still much to offer to help us understand how the
universe came to be. Therefore, let us now attempt to solve the cosmic mystery of creation by
referring to the great scientific minds as our guide. Let us now rewind the story of the big bang and
look into the origins of the universe.
The idea that the universe had an origin was a result of the discovery of the expansionary universe.[vi]
The theoretical groundwork for the expansionary universe theory was conceived, ironically, by Albert
Einstein (a firm believer in the infinite and unchanging universe) in his work concerning relativity.

The Negative Effects Of Natural Disasters
Natural disasters are a major adverse event resulting from natural processes of the Earth, and man
made disasters are influenced by humans and they are often as a result of negligence and human error
among the factors. There is long term physical and psychological reaction of people from both
disasters. Tsunamis, Hurricanes, and Landslides are some examples of natural disasters. On the other
hand, Gas leaks, fire accidents, and oil spills are some examples for man made disaster. They both
have a bad effect on humans. There are many people died after both disasters.
As we all know natural disasters are a major adverse event resulting from natural processes of the
Earth. A natural disaster is defined by the UN as: the consequences of events triggered by natural
hazards that overwhelm local response capacity and seriously affect the social and economic
development of a region. Tsunamis are a long high sea wave caused by an earthquake, submarine
landslide, or other disturbance. The tsunami accrued in Japan on 11 March 2011 is one of the biggest
Tsunamis happened in the world. The study by 150 experts from 48 research organizations across the
country determined that the wave that roared out of the Pacific on March 11 was the largest to ever hit

conclusion. The sentence fluency is well structured and easy to read. Bissinger s writing will not allow

Transformational Leadership Theory Motivates Individuals
Transformational Leadership Theory Motivates Individuals
The definition of transformational leadership is the style of leadership in which the leader identifies
the needed change, creates a vision to guide the change through inspiration, and executes the change
with the commitment of the members of the group(business dictionary.com). Northouse (as cited in
Hall, Johnson, Wysocki, Kepner, 2002) stated in simplistic terms, transformational leadership is a
process that changes, motivates, and transforms individuals. In essence this form of leadership
transforms the employee s values and behaviors, thereby increasing production. In the case of JLB
Enterprises, decreased employee morale was linked to a significant decrease in efficiency and ... Show

Inspirational motivation is the degree to which a leader articulates a vision that is appealing and
inspiring to followers (Riggio, 2009). The leadership of JLB enterprises could reexamine and revise
its mission statement and introduce a more positive set of future goals at a company wide meeting.
Additionally, JLB Enterprises could create and introduce a production based incentive program. Some
possible elements of this program might include wage bonuses and additional paid days off.
Individualized influence is the degree to which the leader acts as a role model for their followers
(Riggio, 2009). In an effort to raise performance expectations JLB Enterprise s executive management
could institute both a manager of the month and an employee of the month program. If the manager of
the month program included one on one mentorship time with a senior manager then it is more likely
that the junior manager would emulate their mentors values and behaviors. Likewise the junior
manager could mentor each of his employees so that values and behaviors might be more consistent
throughout the company.
Conclusion
In conclusion, by utilizing all four elements of the transformational leadership theory employee
morale and production would likely increase at JLB Enterprises. Using one or two elements of the
theory will not be as effective as applying all four elements. Furthermore, transformational

Stanford Prison Experiments
In my opinion, I believe that the Stanford Prison study led to more harm than the Immunization study
because according to prisoner Mr. Ramsey, the experiment should never have taken place as it had no
true scientific basis and was ethically wrong (Leithhead, 2011). The abuse in this study was so harsh,
that they had to end the study early due to a string of mental breakdowns, an outbreak of sadism and a
hunger strike (Leithhead, 2011). This study was conducted to see if the violent behaviors are as a
result of the roles of prisoners and guards or is it solely based on the individual s personality. What
made this study so dangerous is the face that almost everything felt so real, the guards looked real, the
prisoners looked real and they both played the part that they were assigned to. The guards were asked
to do whatever it takes to ensure that the law was kept, without any physical violence (Zimbardo,
1973). It was concluded that individuals will easily assume the ... Show more content on

The guards were told to do whatever they wanted and this frustrated the prisoners because of how they
had abused their authority. The scientists should have tried to control the experiment a little better.
Rather than telling the guards to do whatever they wanted, they should have given them specific tasks
to complete. The media could not have prevented this because they were not allowed to be involved
and they could not fix the damage that was already done. The public could have protested against the
harsh treatment of the participants and demanded compensation c them. However, they were probably
already bound in a contract and thy did receive money for their participation. The best thing for us to
do is have a third party manage these experiments and they should be approved by an official

1. Yes, the agreement on February 1, 2012 is within the scope of ASC 985 605. Example 9 in section
985 605, 55 180 is similar to the case. According to 985 605, 55 182, the revenue for PCS would be
deferred and recognized in income over the one year post contract customer support service period
assuming the lack of vendor specific objective evidence of the fair value of the delivered software
element. In reference to the example, the PCS should be accounted monthly over the 12 month period.
There is no vendor specific objective because the product and the service are not sold separately.

for as a single multiple element arrangement: a. The contracts or agreements are negotiated or
executed within a short timeframe of each other. B. The different elements are closely interrelated or
interdependent in terms of design, technology, or function. It is evident that the second contract is an
extension of the first contract. It satisfies the first factor in which the training of the system is given

Deforestation Regulations Of The Tropics Essay
Deforestation Regulations in the Tropics
48 football fields. Not monthly, not even daily. 48 football fields worth of tropical rainforest is cut
down every single minute. This adds up to about 46 58 thousand square miles per year. 58 thousand
square miles of the already narrow belt of tropical forests stretching around the equator. These are
forests of amazing diversity and productivity. Forests that may cover only 7% of the land s surface
here on Earth, but harbor more than half of all species and play a massive part in maintaining the
carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere and regulating our climate. Advocates for the preservation of
these forests state that deforestation has devastating consequences including social conflict, extinction
of plants and animals, and dangerous climate changes, and that local deforestation in these forests are
causing damages that aren t just local, but global. While opponents claim that tropical forests are
destined to diminish as it is necessary for the growing human population to clear the natural landscape
to make room for farms and pastures, to harvest timber for construction and fuel, to build roads and
urban areas and to develop the economies of the often poor countries that surround the equator. Recent
research has however repeatedly proven these statements wrong. Showing how the human population
have no desperate need to cut down these forests, and that we are in fact more prone to make our own
situation worse when we do.

Immigration In Charles Mee s Big Love
Charles Mee s Big Love is one of many recent reinterpretations of ancient myths with a modern twist.
A central point in both Big Love and Aeschylus The Suppliants is the issue of the outsider. The
suppliants, or immigrants, in both plays are seeking refuge from the practice of intermarriage in their
supposedly barbaric homeland, however they receive a rather harsh reception in Argos. The concept of
immigration was an incredibly prevalent issue in ancient Greece with the start of the establishment of
the Delian League providing a new national identity, and immigration remains an important issue
today. Throughout history there has always been anger simmering under the surface of the
immigration issue due to fear of the other. In The Suppliants , the danaids are described as a sun
burned race (Aesch. Suppl. 155) with Nile burned cheeks (Aesch. Suppl. 71). In Mee s reinterpretation
the women again appear different from the general Greek populous, and are treated differently upon
their arrival because of that fact, showing an intolerance for immigrants that persists into modernity. In
The Suppliants the Danaids differences from the natives of Argos extend even further since: not only
do they look different, but also the Danaids sound different and have different customs. In the opening
choral song, they supplicate hilly Apia (i.e. Argos), and ask it to pay good attention to our foreign
speech (karbanos auda) (Aesch. Suppl. 117 19). Later they are concerned

Corruption In Jamacia Kincaid s A Small Place
Jamacia Kincaid s A Small Place is most certainly a postcolonial text she illustrates the problems and
consequences of the decolonization of Antigua, especially questions to the political and cultural
independence of formerly subjugated people. Kincaid positions the reader into a bevy of different
angles; in the first section Kincaid describes the natural beauty of the island as a hypothetical tourist.
As a reader we are being isolated from the harsher realities of the people that live there. The
information given is facts only a native would know, for example the reason why the majority of the
cars on the island are poorly run. In Kincaid s guided tour are her views about the mansions on the
island, which are gained through corruption. In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As an example, she takes the state of the library, awaiting repairs after all these years and forced to
reside in temporary quarters above a dry goods store. Kincaid has fond, if ambivalent, feelings toward
the old library, which was a haven of beauty and an escape into reading for her as a child. She recalls
the imperious ways of the head librarian (who suspected Kincaid, rightly, of stealing books), who is
now sadly reduced to campaigning, mostly unsuccessfully, for funds to build a new library, while the
collection decomposes in cardboard boxes. The rich members of the Mill Reef Club have the funds to
help, but will do so only if the old library is rebuilt a demand that Kincaid sees as having more to do
with nostalgia for the colonial regime than with a true desire to help. Kincaid mentions the ironies
involved in Antigua having a Minister of Culture without having a culture to administer. She also
mentions her politically active mother s run in with the current Minister of Culture, who has allowed
the library to languish. Education has clearly suffered on Antigua in the years since independence, and
Kincaid ruefully notes the poor speech habits of the younger

Employee Involvement and Commitment
Abstract In this report is going to explain in details a critical analyzes of employee involvement and
commitment in the process of change. According to the readings that has been done, in this paper will
be discussed the importance of the connections between employee involvement and commitment and
their impact in the process of change. In order to provide support to this theory the paper includes
examples, comparing and contrasting different articles and authors. Introduction To write for
employee involvement and commitment in a change process, it is important to provide to the reader a
clear understanding of the meaning employee involvement and commitment, as well as the interaction
of these two factors in order to have a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However according to the researches organizations must be careful in choosing the type of the
employee involvement. In order to choose the right type of employee involvement in the process of
change organizations should pay attention to the criteria s as follows; roles, skills, resource,
commitment, outputs, and data (Vidal, 2007). Furthermore the author argues that choosing the right
type of employee involvement effects positively in the process of change, commitment and also
reduces cost. Whereas choosing the wrong employee involvement type will negative impact in time
planning, solutions, and also in financial resources. However, (M.Gale J.Clay, 2001) believes that in
order to gain the level of the commitment during the change, the organizations should highly consider
to use some of the other involvement tools such as; communication, education, group discussion,
support, feedback and reward. By giving the people the opportunity the express their opinions in the
individual basis, it is great way to understand their feelings for any concern or any possible fear they
might have for the process of change. On the other hand education is also another indicator that
certainly increase the level of employee commitment before and also during the change

The Stylistic Techniques Of Japanese Literature
I discovered that the stylistic techniques of Japanese literature have had a large impact on the way the
book was written. For example, Japanese literature focuses more on the search of human values, with
central themes being emotional quality of human struggles as well as a lack of a definite plot. I have
seen this, as both Kitchen and Moonlight Shadow focused on how Mikage and Satsuki matured
through the coping of the death of their loved ones.
After having our discussion on Kitchen , I now understand what Yoshimoto is trying to say about
gender roles in Japan. For example, we talked about how after Eriko s wife died, he had a different
perspective of the world because men are known to be more assertive and a gentleman doesn t belong
in the kitchen . Women were always seen as weak or only having knowledge in housework, while the
men of the households were to represent their household in the outside world. Also, we discussed how
religion was a key factor to the theme of death. I thought I could relate how Buddhism believes in
reincarnation to how Yoshimoto views death. Reincarnation is basically being reborn from your past
life because you believe in change or have done a good deed. Even though people must face
unavoidable hurt brought by many reasons such as death, life still goes on because it s a process of
healing.
In our Moonlight Shadow discussion, Yoshimoto taught me that everyone has his or her own way of
grieving. For example, we talked about how Hiiragi

Text Neck Speech
How many hours do you spend using your smartphone per day? Are you concerned about how
smartphone usage may be damaging your health and posture? Are you suffering from neck or back
pain? Were you aware that smartphone usage creates as much as 27 kg of force on your neck? Will
you be changing your habits to address this? Good afternoon, ladies and gentleman, I am Zane. In the
next few minutes, I am going to talk about text neck, a repetitive strain injury (RSI). To start, we will
look at the causes of text neck. Then, we will turn to the effects of text neck. After which, I will share
some ways on how to prevent suffering from text neck and finally, I will summarize my presentation.
First of all, let s look at what causes text neck. When you peer down on your phone for extensive
period, the natural curvature of your neck changes and this puts a lot of pressure on our neck s
vertebrae and disc. On average, our head weighs about 4kg. But for every inch we drop our head
forward, the load is doubled. And as you hunch even further at 60 degree with your chin to your chest,
the weight increase seven fold at around 27kg. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Micro tears and soreness usually heal with time, but if the poor posture is not corrected, in the long
term, the discs may wear out, or even slip out, causing them to pinch on the nerves. This would cause
the person to feel pins and needles running down his or her arms. Besides that, the posture also
restricts your lungs ability to expand, impairing your lung s

Vaccinations has prevented and nearly eliminated many childhood diseases. Maintenance medications provide a way for older adults to manage their chronic medical conditions. But there are some medical conditions that are also chronic, but with no cure available. One such condition is HIV, or human immunodeficiency virus. According to Tortora, HIV is the pathogen causing the loss of immune function that selectively infects helper T cells (545). My goal in this paper is to show the advances modern medicine has achieved in discovering the different ways to combat this disease, whether it is attacking the virus directly or assisting our own body s ability to fight infection. Vaccinations are usually are our first line of defense at preventing diseases. According to Haynes, isolation of potent broadly neutralizing antibodies (bnAbs) assist CD8T cell killing of HIV infected cells, have opened new avenues for strategies for HIV vaccine design (39). These antibodies recognize a protein that is present on the surface of all HIV strains and neutralize the effects of the virus. The problem researchers have here is that, with vaccination, a person builds up their own immune response rather quickly. Essay On Counterculture In The 1960s One of the most exciting things about studying more recent history is almost intrinsically connected to the advent of the photographic camera, which offers spontaneous imagery of events in the moment that the artwork of the past could only attempt to recreate. The transition from black and white with a burst of color following the Second World War offered to the public eye a realistic representation of events that they had not had the opportunity to experience before. Color photographs boomed in the decades following the war, which provides historians today with a wide breadth of visual sources with which to corroborate other materials. This is especially true when examining the documentation of the counterculture in the 1960s. Similarly, the hippie counterculture eventually developed a strong anti war sentiment regarding the American intervention in Vietnam. However, the doctrine of love and pacifism resulted in the hippies never developing militant behaviors in the way that the members of SDS did. This emphasis on non violence, as the 60s and 70s went on, became an increasingly valuable point in which the hippies diverged from other groups that shared similar foundational philosophies given that the growing unrest in America resulted in, for many groups including SDS, more violent ... • 12. Sahelian Trading Routes Sahelian Trading Routes Trade routes played an essential role when considering development in the Sahel region, given that states in the area have thrived as a consequence of supporting these respective routes. Slave trade with Islamic states was especially significant in the development of states in the Sahel region. Trading across the continent facilitated the wellbeing of individuals living in Sahel and thus created an intriguing contrast between these states and other nations living in the upper and lower Saharan areas. Trans Saharan trade occurred as early as the Roman Empire and it was actually one of the reasons why the Romans were able to continue to support the Empire. In large measure, the prosperity of Carthage in Roman times was due to its control of the trans Saharan trade routes, through which it received ivory, gold, and slaves (Anton). Even though the Muslims destroyed Carthage and were partly responsible for the fall of the last thriving city in the Roman Empire, they did not ignore the area s great potential. Conditions in Sahel continued to improve consequent to the eight century Mahommedan expansion to Maghreb. Moors and Moroccans focused on taking control of all trade routes reaching the heart of Africa and traversing the continent. This resulted in large amounts of resources reaching the hands of Sahelian kings and thus making it possible for their kingdoms to expand at a rapid rate. Nathan Critchfield Mrs. Voigt Senior Project Research Paper October 20, 2017 When considering the topic of health benefits and the risks of running long distances the well known story of the original marathoner Pheidippides is often brought up. The story is often told that Pheidippides, after running nearly twenty six miles from Marathon to Athens to declare that the Athenians had won the Battle of Marathon, fell dead from exhaustion. This version of the first marathon often casts a negative light on the health benefits of running. However, this is not the full story. The real story involves Pheidippides traveling one hundred forty miles in an attempt to recruit the Spartans to aid the Athenians in their upcoming battle; then running again the return trip to report to the Athenians that aid would not be coming before the Persians arrived to battle. Finally, he ran the twenty six miles to Athens to report the Athenian victory. That is when he finally collapsed from wounds and exhaustion. From this tragedy, we see that at some point distance running can be harmful or even fatal. The real question is, have marathons reached ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the business profession, effective communication enables managers to give understandable instructions to their employees. Effective communication will help state what is expected from workers. God favored Abel s sacrifice of milk and meat over Cain s offering of fruits. This angered Cain, and presumably out of jealously, he murdered his brother, Abel. Just as Cain was the first physical birth in the bible, Abel is the first recorded death (and murder) of the bible. God questions Cain on the death of Abel, and Cain lies and tells God that he did not murder his brother. Although is has been interrupted in multiple ways, it is ultimately believed that Cain s jealously of God favoring his brother s sacrifice in relation to his own is what lead to his rage and commitment of murder. A main moral in the myth of the story of Cain and Abel is that jealously can lead to sin. Cain s jealously of Abel is what causes him to lash out, and later lie to God about his actions to cover up his original sins. • 36. Localization of Brain Function Localization of Brain Function Psychologists have found that the brain often shows localization of function . This means that different parts of the brain carry out different tasks, for example, vision, voluntary movement and speech. The idea is that not all parts of the brain do the same thing, and that each part functions on its own, without the aid of other areas of the brain. This may seem obvious, but other organs, such as the liver, do not show localization of function; one part of the liver does the same thing as a part on the opposite side. A famous example of brain localization is the case of Phineas Gage; a railway worker in 1848, who one day, while trying to blow out a hole in the side of a mountain, had a metal rod shoot ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... AD suffered cardiac arrest, which damaged his frontal and temporal lobes. The damage done caused him to alter his personality when in the company of different people; gaining the patient the nick name The Human Chameleon. When AD was in the company of lawyers, he would invent a detailed background story to support his claim of being a lawyer. When in the company of a doctor, he would do the same but claim to be a doctor. The interesting twist on his case is that AD had anosognosia; a lack of insight into his odd behavior. This meant that AD truly believed his own lavish stories. His condition is a form of anterograde amnesia, which caused him to forget everything prior to the cardiac arrest, thus allowing him to invent past lives. The case of AD shows that the area that was damaged (the frontal and temporal lobes) s function was not taken over by another area of the brain, as AD never regained the memories lost in the accident. However, psychologists have also found a counter argument for localization of brain function; and that is brain plasticity. Brain plasticity is the idea that if one part of the brain stops functioning, another part will take over that role. The idea of brain plasticity has been around for hundreds of years. The ancient Greeks accepted the idea, believing that one could train their mind, just like training a body. Who is to blame for such a crisis and how do we try to prevent another? Well, the cause of this crisis is not merely that simple. This crisis was caused by a complex series of events with all actors within the financial market to blame. However, I wanted to understand how these various actors and causes all occurred while under the supposed watchful eye of regulators, whose role within the market is based upon the regulation of these financial institutions to prevent crisis from occurring in the first place. Regulators are responsible for overseeing various components within the banking industry; however, one component that I was most interested in was capital adequacy requirements. I wanted to understand why capital requirements were created in the first place, how they had evolved over time and what role they played in the crisis. Lastly, I believe that capital requirements are a self evident prevention method in inhibiting the collapse of banks due to risky lending. Therefore, with the creation of adequate capital requirements going forward, we could have one solution for a very complex problem. BANKING ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The abuse in this study was so harsh, that they had to end the study early due to a string of mental breakdowns, an outbreak of sadism and a hunger strike (Leithhead, 2011). This study was conducted to see if the violent behaviors are as a result of the roles of prisoners and guards or is it solely based on the individual s personality. What made this study so dangerous is the face that almost everything felt so real, the guards looked real, the prisoners looked real and they both played the part that they were assigned to. The guards were asked to do whatever it takes to ensure that the law was kept, without any physical violence (Zimbardo, 1973). It was concluded that individuals will easily assume the ... The scientists should have tried to control the experiment a little better. Rather than telling the guards to do whatever they wanted, they should have given them specific tasks to complete. The media could not have prevented this because they were not allowed to be involved and they could not fix the damage that was already done. The public could have protested against the harsh treatment of the participants and demanded compensation c them. However, they were probably already bound in a contract and thy did receive money for their participation. • 46. Deforestation Regulations Of The Tropics Essay Deforestation Regulations in the Tropics 48 football fields. Not monthly, not even daily. 48 football fields worth of tropical rainforest is cut down every single minute. This adds up to about 46 58 thousand square miles per year. 58 thousand square miles of the already narrow belt of tropical forests stretching around the equator. These are forests of amazing diversity and productivity. Forests that may cover only 7% of the land s surface here on Earth, but harbor more than half of all species and play a massive part in maintaining the carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere and regulating our climate. Advocates for the preservation of these forests state that deforestation has devastating consequences including social conflict, extinction of plants and animals, and dangerous climate changes, and that local deforestation in these forests are causing damages that aren t just local, but global. While opponents claim that tropical forests are destined to diminish as it is necessary for the growing human population to clear the natural landscape to make room for farms and pastures, to harvest timber for construction and fuel, to build roads and urban areas and to develop the economies of the often poor countries that surround the equator. Recent research has however repeatedly proven these statements wrong. Showing how the human population have no desperate need to cut down these forests, and that we are in fact more prone to make our own situation worse when we do. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 47. Immigration In Charles Mee s Big Love Charles Mee s Big Love is one of many recent reinterpretations of ancient myths with a modern twist. A central point in both Big Love and Aeschylus The Suppliants is the issue of the outsider. The suppliants, or immigrants, in both plays are seeking refuge from the practice of intermarriage in their supposedly barbaric homeland, however they receive a rather harsh reception in Argos. The concept of immigration was an incredibly prevalent issue in ancient Greece with the start of the establishment of the Delian League providing a new national identity, and immigration remains an important issue today. Throughout history there has always been anger simmering under the surface of the immigration issue due to fear of the other. In The Suppliants , the danaids are described as a sun burned race (Aesch. Suppl. 155) with Nile burned cheeks (Aesch. Suppl. 71). In Mee s reinterpretation the women again appear different from the general Greek populous, and are treated differently upon their arrival because of that fact, showing an intolerance for immigrants that persists into modernity. In The Suppliants the Danaids differences from the natives of Argos extend even further since: not only do they look different, but also the Danaids sound different and have different customs. In the opening choral song, they supplicate hilly Apia (i.e. Argos), and ask it to pay good attention to our foreign speech (karbanos auda) (Aesch. Suppl. 117 19). Later they are concerned ... • 48. Corruption In Jamacia Kincaid s A Small Place Jamacia Kincaid s A Small Place is most certainly a postcolonial text she illustrates the problems and consequences of the decolonization of Antigua, especially questions to the political and cultural independence of formerly subjugated people. Kincaid positions the reader into a bevy of different angles; in the first section Kincaid describes the natural beauty of the island as a hypothetical tourist. As a reader we are being isolated from the harsher realities of the people that live there. The information given is facts only a native would know, for example the reason why the majority of the cars on the island are poorly run. In Kincaid s guided tour are her views about the mansions on the island, which are gained through corruption. In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As an example, she takes the state of the library, awaiting repairs after all these years and forced to reside in temporary quarters above a dry goods store. Kincaid has fond, if ambivalent, feelings toward the old library, which was a haven of beauty and an escape into reading for her as a child. She recalls the imperious ways of the head librarian (who suspected Kincaid, rightly, of stealing books), who is now sadly reduced to campaigning, mostly unsuccessfully, for funds to build a new library, while the collection decomposes in cardboard boxes. The rich members of the Mill Reef Club have the funds to help, but will do so only if the old library is rebuilt a demand that Kincaid sees as having more to do with nostalgia for the colonial regime than with a true desire to help. Kincaid mentions the ironies involved in Antigua having a Minister of Culture without having a culture to administer. She also mentions her politically active mother s run in with the current Minister of Culture, who has allowed the library to languish. Education has clearly suffered on Antigua in the years since independence, and Kincaid ruefully notes the poor speech habits of the younger ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 50. The Stylistic Techniques Of Japanese Literature I discovered that the stylistic techniques of Japanese literature have had a large impact on the way the book was written. For example, Japanese literature focuses more on the search of human values, with central themes being emotional quality of human struggles as well as a lack of a definite plot. I have seen this, as both Kitchen and Moonlight Shadow focused on how Mikage and Satsuki matured through the coping of the death of their loved ones. After having our discussion on Kitchen , I now understand what Yoshimoto is trying to say about gender roles in Japan. For example, we talked about how after Eriko s wife died, he had a different perspective of the world because men are known to be more assertive and a gentleman doesn t belong in the kitchen . Women were always seen as weak or only having knowledge in housework, while the men of the households were to represent their household in the outside world. Also, we discussed how religion was a key factor to the theme of death. I thought I could relate how Buddhism believes in reincarnation to how Yoshimoto views death. Reincarnation is basically being reborn from your past life because you believe in change or have done a good deed. Even though people must face unavoidable hurt brought by many reasons such as death, life still goes on because it s a process of healing. In our Moonlight Shadow discussion, Yoshimoto taught me that everyone has his or her own way of grieving. For example, we talked about how Hiiragi ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
