Get a Knife, Get a Dog but Get Rid of Guns by Molly Ivin
Molly Ivins s Get a Knife, Get a Dog, but get Rid of Guns is the authors personal opinion on how guns
should be banned from public use; she argues guns only kill that it would be safer to carry a knife or
get a dog to protect us. She uses the Second Amendment to back up her argument about guns being
only for the well trained militia. The claim of the argument is Guns are a Danger, so it s safer to get a
knife or a dog. Ivins s argument is unclear without addressing the main reasons why guns are bad
overall.
Ivins s first proof of an assumption is Let me start this discussion by pointing out that I am not
antigun. I am pro knife. Consider the merits of a knife (323). If Ivins s is not anti gun then why is she
making this argument? She is pro knife then she gives evidence about what the good things about
having a knife are. Her evidence that backs up why she argues that a knife is safer than a gun is In the
first place, you have to catch up with someone in order to stab them. A general substitution of knives
for guns would promote physical fitness. We d turn into a whole nation of great runners. Plus, knives
don t ricochet and people are seldom killed while cleaning their knives (323).
The author states why it is a good idea to carry a knife, we would have to be physically fit with good
aim or skills if we were to carry a knife, But fighting against someone with a gun while the person has
a knife the gun wins so it wouldn t be able to protect the person. We would

Language Between Language And Language
Language arose out of a need to communicate ideas and commands. Initially it was very basic, but in
its current form language is very complex. It a adapted to the changing need of speakers. In this sense,
language is a living entity which evolves in response to the changing cultural context in which it
exists. Because language evolves in response to culture, the full quality of its meaning is derived from
understanding the context in which it takes place. Educators must be aware of the sociocultural nature
of language, understanding that language cannot be viewed as stagnant or removed from its context.
This has implications for the ways that educators think about, understand and teach language, so that
students have an appreciation for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although language today can be seen as far more complex than in the past, due to the growing number
of cultural factors influencing it, language has been a social and cultural phenomenon since its
inception.
The development of language overtime illustrates the relationship between language and culture. To
have a holistic appreciation for language and meaning, this relationship must be understood. It is
likely that all human languages developed from one single language (Gee Hayes, 2011). As human
moved, language developed in relation to the different cultures as they inherited and this led to the
creation of the 6,500 languages that exist today, which does not include those which no longer exist
(Gee Hayes, 2011). Cultural influence has not only been responsible for the creation of different
languages, but has also created differences among the same language within different places. English
for example exits in many different forms around the world. The variances in Englishes began to
emerge as a result of colonisation. The colonization of America for example, led to the creation of
American English, a transformation which took only weeks, as American settlers had to evolve the
language to adapt to their new experiences, which British English could not accommodate as the
culture in England did not include these American specific experiences and ideas (Crystal, 2013).
Variations in language are specific to certain contexts. Understanding language requires

Philosophical Basis of Education
INTRODUCTION
In this unit we will discuss the inter dependence of philosophy and education. After discussing the
impact of philosophy on education and vice versa, we will describe briefly the different schools of
philosophy viz. Naturalism, Idealism and Pragmatism, and their implications for education in
curriculum, role of the teacher and the nature of discipline. While explaining the ideas advocated by
different schools of philosophy on above concepts, this unit will also incorporate the views of both
Western as well as Indian thinkers.
PHILOSOPHY, EDUCATION AND THEIR INTER DEPENDENCE
The inter dependence of philosophy and education is clearly seen from the fact that the great
philosphers of all times have also been great ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Educational philosophy depends on formal philosophy because most of the major problems of
education are in fact philosophical problems. Like general philosophy, educational philosophy is
speculative, prescriptive critical or analytic.
NATURALISM AND EDUCATION
Naturalism as a philosophy of education was developed in the 18th century. It is based on the
assumpiion that nature represents the wholeness of reality. Nature, itself, is a total system that contains
and explains all existence including human beings and human nature. According to naturalists the
material and the physical world is govered by certain laws, and man, who is the creator of the material
world, must submit to it. It denies the existence of anything beyond nature, behind nature and other
than nature such as supernaturalism.
In terms of epistemology or theory of knowledge, naturalists highlight the value of scientific
knowledge. Francis Bacon emphasizes the inductive method for acquiring the scientific knowledge
through specific observation, accumulation and generalisation. He also lays emphasis on the empirical
and experimental knowledge. Naturalists also lay stress on sensory training as senses are the gateways
to learning.
To naturalists, values arise from the human beings interaction with the environment. Instincts. drives
and impulses need to be expressed rather than repressed. According to them, there is no absolute good
or evil in the world. Values of life are created by

Benefits Of Genetically Modified Foods
Autumn Gwinn UPLOAD TO TURNITIN!!!!!! English 4 Pd. 3 27 April 2015 Research Paper
Genetically Modifying Foods Genetic engineering is a relatively new thing in early stages of
development (Cummins 1). Genetically engineering something is done by altering or disrupting the
genetic makeup. Some examples are microorganisms, plants, fish, trees, humans, and other animals
(Cummins 1). Gene engineers move, get rid of, and add genetic material to something. There is even
human genes and animal genes added to the DNA of other animals and plants, creating unimaginable
life forms (Cummins 1). The products that are genetically modified currently are soybeans and soy oil,
corn, potatoes, squash, canola oil, cottonseed oil, papaya, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, a synthetic pesticide called DDT was produced in..?. It turned out to harm animals. It
built up and stayed in fish, and it thinned the shells of birds that ate the fish. The most common birds
were the bald eagles and ospreys. Another development was chlorofluorocarbons that were used in
refrigerants, propellants, and the cleaning solvents. It turned out that they went up into the atmosphere
and destroyed the ozone that protects humans from the sun s radiation. The use of these developments
were reduced significantly and DDT was banned (Union of Concerned Scientists 1). For the first time
in the world, scientists are now the creators of new life (Cummins 1). This is a bad thing. Genetically
modified foods are threatening to human health, animals, and the environment. Thesis First,
genetically modified foods are threatening to human health. The biotech industry says that the Food
and Drug Administration (FDA) states that genetically modified foods are safe for humans to
consume. This is not true. Documents from the FDA released by a lawsuit stated that genetically
modified foods are not really safe. They can cause all kinds of health issues. These documents also
revealed that scientists tried to tell the FDA that they are not safe, but the FDA did not listen. Calgene
developed the first genetically modified crop. They developed the FlavrSavr tomato and they had
research to go along with it. Their data showed that lab rats had to be force fed.

The Strengths Of District Assessment
Dr. Myers gave me the state aid formula as the total district assessment times 0.025 times 98% plus
miscellaneous funds divided by ADM (Average Daily Membership). The district obtains its money
through federal, local, and state funds. However, he did not share these amounts with me. Through
looking at reports on our schools website, I determined that our local revenue was $1,875,000, state
revenue was $1,395,105, and federal revenue was only $365,783. The general strengths of the district
funding is through local revenue collection. Our local collection is very high. Our district receives
roughly 55% of its funding from local taxes, which is higher than the state average of 35%. We do not
have a ton of businesses, however our property ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He handles every requisition to ensure that our districts money is being spent purposefully. Also, he
added, that he accepts responsibility for any misuse of funds. The principals in our district do not have
guidelines for budgeting, because they do not have a budget. If a principal has a need, first they have
to justify why and then Dr. Myers will assess if the district has the money. However, the principals are
required by the state to attend tier 1 APSCN (Arkansas Public School Computer Network) training
yearly. The only other need of the principal, according to our superintendent, is the ability to say no
when it comes to spending money. However, he also expects the principals to find other options if the
district cannot afford to make the purchase that is needed. The state requires APSCN as the accounting
system required in our school. He included that we use eSchool and eFinance software under that
program also. Dr. Myers strongly believes that computers have a positive effect on the districts
accounting and budgeting. He stated that computers make it easy to keep and share documents. He
also regularly uses formulas to help figure the budget, which he says saves him a lot of time. The
overall process of estimating revenues and expenditures comes relatively easy for Dr. Myers, he says
due to the fact that our business manager has been with the

According To The New American Standard Bible Exodus
Breaking news! A man named Moses just experienced a life change event. He claims that God came to
him through a burning bush. Moses stated after this miraculous event to a reporter near Mount Horeb,
There was an angle in the distance coming from a flaming bush that was not being consumed. He was
astonished by this and decided that he must go over and experience this event. Moses also said, It was
God. He called me to remove my sandals for it was holy ground. According to the New American
Standard Bible Exodus 3:15 16, God told Moses that His name is I am who am and that He is the God
of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Not only has God amazed many around the world through this burning
bush, but there is even more to Moses story that is life changing. Moses told us that God has instructed

Israelite said, If you really saw God, why has he waited so long to save us. We have been suffering for

American Standard Bible Exodus 3:7 8 God said to Moses, I have witnessed the affliction of my
people in Egypt and have heard their cry against their taskmasters, so I know well what they are
suffering. Therefore I have come down to rescue them from the power of the Egyptians and lead them

Irish Stereotypes
Stereotypes and the Monster They Make
As seen through history, people of different racial, social, ethnic, and religious groups are made into
monsters to be feared by the American media. The Irish were drawn as scary, violent drunkards who
should not be trusted. The Japanese were classified as enemy aliens, and believed to be untrustworthy.
Chinese were lazy, evil, womanizing workers stealing jobs. Xenophobia took a strong hold, causing
mass panic of the white men at the sight of the orange and yellow men. Each of these stereotypes
portrayed in the media through political cartoons created monsters in the white Americans eyes.
Irish immigrants faced a stereotype of being drunk and violent. Political cartoons were a perfect
medium for the media to infect American homes with xenophobia. Irish were drawn to look similar to
monkeys, often wielding a bottle of rum with them. Most political cartoons showed Irish fighting or
causing havoc in in white towns, communities, or homes. One political cartoon in particular is

This is illustrated through the popular comic, The Yellow Terror in All His Glory where a Chinese
caricature stands over a dead white woman, while he wields his gun, knife and torch. (Source 7) The
woman lying dead in the cartoon is symbolic of the prestige of a white woman. Women were viewed
as helpless beings at the time, calling for protection from the savage Yellow Peril who lusted after her.
Chinese men were accused of everything from sex trafficking rings to rape, only causing more fear in
Americans hearts. The smoke in the background alludes to the smoking of opium that Chinese men
were stereotyped for. Opium was another taboo in America that the media often pointed out. This
paired with drinking made the American public believe the Chinese were heathens who could not be

Sorry everyone for being late! Since Tuesday, an Internet outage with AT@T occurred until early

diversity was very intriguing in a way that educated me more on understanding race and similarities.
Even though I did pretty well on the quiz, I did answer a few questions incorrectly. In order for me to
understand the questions answered wrong, I did a little more research and found a lot of information
that I was unaware of. Like many other students who mentioned in their discussion post, I assumed
that certain regions possessed a variety of skin color due to environmental changes, but in all honesty,

British Airways Culture
Changing the Culture at British Airways
1. Problems you identified from the case
Macro: The first problem changing the culture at British Airways was the merger of the BOAC and
BEA. In 1971, the Civil Aviation Act became law and the board was to control policy over British
Airways but both BOAC and BEA remained autonomous, each with its own chairman, board, and
chief executive. This caused a split within British Airways throughout the 1970s and in the mid 1980.
The second problem BA faced was the threat of privatization. In 1984 the government passed
legislation that made BA a public limited company. The third was productivity was bad compared to
other leading foreign airlines. The fourth was poor service. Poor customer service ... Show more

Both companies had done its share of pioneering. BA needs to be reorganized to have shared desires.
This resulted in a financial crises and downsizing of employees (Jick Peiperl, 2011, p. 35).
3. Organizational Systems Affected
Structural: The Leadership indicated that BEA was concerned with building an airline infrastructure
than it did in profit. This was reflection a de centralized leadership style and BOAC was concerned
with the jet airliner which was focusing on the task. The merger caused BA to be very controlled with
a lot of rules and regulations. Privatization by the British government made BA a public limited
company. (Jick Peiperl, 2011, pp. 26, 34).
Psychosocial: Employees expressed their pleasure on being treated with respect. When the merger
took place, both BEA and BOAC will have to be loyal to each other and unite. A greater challenge is
to change the mindset of employees at all levels. The mindset is a shared way of thinking and behavior
within in an organization. They are reflected in accepted behaviors and attitudes. The mindset
becomes very powerful in gaining unity and focus within the organization. It provides a common
focus and increases the intensity of the work being done (Jick Peiperl, 2011, p. 39).
Technical: BA will have to cut cost and drive customer service. The technological innovation plays
and important role. If everyone works together there would be a more

The Measurement of Pendulum s Harmonic Motion Lab #2
Abstract
The specific purpose of this experiment was to verify three physical concepts based on Newton s
Laws. These concepts are vector addition, force as a vector, and the law of equilibrium. The densities
of two different objects were compared by measuring their masses and volumes. In this experiment,
two different sets of methods of volume measurement were compared to the density computation of an
object bearing a standard shape. In addition, the density computation was used to determine the
buoyant force acting on different objects. At this point, it was observed that an object maintains a
constant velocity if all the external forces cancel out one another (no net force results from the
unbalanced forces acting on an object). In this case, a force table was used to study Newton s First
Law of Motion. These forces were represented as F1, F2, and F3. Analysis of results obtained from the
experiment proved that the value of F3 determined through calculations was less than the measured
value of F3. In Trial#1, for example, the calculated value of F3 was 211.59g @ 2430 while the
measured value of F3 was 215g @2430, translating to a % difference of 0.5g @20. Although the
primary objectives of the lab were achieved, errors (in particular, static friction) occurred during the
experiment. These errors were observed

Henry David Thoreau Analysis
Henry David Thoreau, a nineteenth century writer, philosopher, and abolitionist, establishes himself as
an outsider, a passionate rebel against the status quo, in a passage from Walden. He writes to explain
why he went into the woods to live and left behind what most people would consider civilization.
Especially for an audience of contemporaries in the 1850s, before the Civil War, his choice to live in
the woods would have been outrageous even revolutionary. Even today, his choice to live in a small
cabin in the woods would be considered counter to the status quo, so the modern audience is also
intrigued by his explanation. His language and method of presenting his ideas create an argument
between civilization and real life, and it is clear that he values real life in the woods over what most
people would consider civilization. He pits civilization against life throughout, though he hides the
reference to civilization behind a contrast to life in the words not life, and he suggests that living in
civilization would be a resignation. He counters this with many references to life (nouns) and live and
living (verbs), such as to live deliberately, facts of life, I had not lived, wish to live, not life, living is
so dear, live deep, marrow of life, to live so sturdily. The paragraph is bursting with life references,
and we immediately discern the urgency of his desire. We learn the temperament of the man through
this intensity. The contrast between life and not life is

Why America Needs To Change
America

even though we only have the second largest military. I think America needs to change. America needs
to change because we need a bigger punishment for rapists and murderers, we need better gun control,
and we need a stronger military.
First, America needs to change the way we punish rapists and murderers. I think we need to give
rapists and murderers a longer or harsher punishment. The way we punish rapists and murderers is too
easy for what they did to their victims. Murderers should have the same things happen to them as what
they did to their victims. Rapists should have life time in jail. America would be a better country

What is it thinking? Thinking is an activity we do naturally and spontaneously, each moment, every

The reality is something we can perceive with the senses, but the reality is something hidden that will

To any reality we get a lot of questions: what, why, for whom is, by whom, etc.. We ask for things we

Essay about The Pros and Cons of Home Schooling
The Pros and Cons of Home Schooling Home schooling is an important issue in the educational world
today. Whether or not a parent has the right to take their child out of public schools to educate them at
home has become a widely talked about subject. Over the past decade, some 18,260 home schools
have registered as home schools, and this number continues to grow (Clark/Havice). This issue,
although intense and multi layered, is often divided into two distinct groups those who oppose it,
thinking it prevents the child from learning the essentials for social life, and those who advocate it,
thinking that it brings the family together, allowing the parents to control what the child learns, and
permits them to educate the children one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In addition to the lack of social skills, children also face the problem with going to universities.
Colleges are reluctant to admit home school graduates because they did not have an accredited
diploma (Smith). Students who have been home schooled throughout their childhood also run into
problems when applying for college. Home schooling requires that one parent must stay at home and
teach the children. Families have to give up one parent s full time salary. Rachel Gehlbach obtained a
college degree and studied theology, computers and social sciences before she had children. She notes
that she could probably get a good job in Milwaukee, but she has chosen remain at home and teach the
children. They bake bread and garden to help save money on the family s grocery bill (Tastad). There
is also the price of school supplies to contend with; school supplies tend to be more expensive for
home schooled students. This can make the loss of income harder (Kang).
Since parents are the teachers in a home schooling environment, they have ultimate authority. They
can have an oppressive amount of control over the student. Parents spending more time with their
children may seem like an advantage, but there comes a point where the students need time away from
their family and their parents. School is a place where students can socialize with people outside of
their family and not be under their parents constant observation. Eventually,

Gut Microbiota Research Paper
Molecular insights into gastric sleeve surgery: A review on gut microbiota and obesity 1. Introduction
Overweight and obesity are defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as an abnormal or
excessive accumulation of body fat that damages the health of the individual. Nowadays, obesity is
becoming widespread around the world, with complications such as diabetes and an increased risk of
heart disease. Currently, it has been shown that in addition to genetic factors, the incidence of obesity
is affected by environmental factors such as gut microbiota interactions, and diet through changes in
gut microbiota, intestinal permeability and LPS levels. The gut microbiota consists of bacteria, fungi,
viruses and protozoans, often belonging to the phyla of Frimicutes, Bacteroides, Actinobacteria, and
Protebacteria (3). Although, more than a thousand different bacteria are found in the human intestine,

This surgery is a safe and effective way to reduce the weight of patients who are at greater risk or who
want to minimize the risk of weight loss surgery, due to excessive obesity (11). Effective factors in
weight loss in sleeve gastrectomy are food restrictions, malabsorption, gastric emptying, rapid gastric
emptying, increased appetite regulating hormones (PYY, GIP, GLP1, etc.), decreased hunger hormone
(ghrelin) and increased bile acids. Although, the size of the stomach is reduced in this type of surgery,
but its function stays normal. On the other hand, it reduces hunger due to extra gastric volume,

Unit 2 Assignment 1 Cellular Structures and Pathogenicity
Cellular Structures and Pathogenicity
Jennifer L. Wethington
ITT Technical Institute
Unit 2 Assignment 1 Bacterial illness is a result of complex interactions between bacteria and the host.
During evolution, humans developed many ways to protect themselves against bacterial pathogens.
On the other hand, bacteria have developed strategies to evade, subvert or circumvent these defenses
(Sousa, 2003) One of the most important characteristics of bacterial pathogenicity is the various
strategies developed by prokaryotic organisms to use host molecules for their own benefit (Sousa,
2003). To accomplish this, bacteria have evolved elaborate control mechanisms to turn genes on and
off, varying the transcriptional activator or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the initial phase of infection, environmental strains of P. aeruginosa from any aqueous setting are
inadvertently inhaled or otherwise delivered to the upper respiratory tract (Feldman, et al., 1998). It is
at this stage where the expression of functional flagella is critical, providing chemotaxis toward
desirable substrates, such as mucin, and the motility essential for widespread dissemination (Feldman,
et al., 1998). In the normal host, the presence of defenses and additional antimicrobial peptides, the
affinity of flagella components for mucin glycopeptides, and the process of mucociliary clearance are
likely to eradicate such transiently inhaled organisms from the respiratory tract before any epithelial
immune response is elicited (Feldman, et al., 1998).
While motility is commonplace among the prokaryotes, it is important to note the variety of structures
responsible for motility. These structures vary depending not only on the organism in question, but
also on the particular environment (Bardy, Ng, Jarrell, 2003). Study of the bacterial flagellum has
provided insights into many aspects of prokaryotic cellular activities including genetics and
regulation, physiology, environmental sensing, protein secretion and assembly of complex structures
(Bardy, Ng, Jarrell, 2003). Continued study of all prokaryotic motility structures will provide
knowledge that is likely to reach far beyond the topic of motility and pathogenicity (Bardy, Ng,

The plate was then read for absorbance at 540nm using the microplate reader. The neutral red assay
was chosen because it assesses the lysosomal integrity of cells. As the integrity of the lysosome in
cells is dependent upon a very wide range of healthy internal machinery, as opposed to a single or a
few individual pathways, it provides a good overview of general cellular health as deficient systems
inside the cell are likely to impact on the cells ability to retain the neutralred stain [19] .
LDH release
Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) is an oxidative enzyme that changes lactate into pyruvate during
glycolysis. LDH widely exists in cell membranes and cytoplasm, and is released from cells into
culture supernatants immediately after cell damage. Therefore, photospectrometrical assessment for
cell viability through the extracellular leakage of LDH can be applied for the antiviral evaluation of
compounds [20] .
The method using cell line and described previously. The LDH released from necrotic cells into the
extracellular fluid was determined after 4 h of treatment with the test agents by using the
commercially available Cytotoxicity Detection Kit (LDH). The plates were centrifuged at 400 g and 4

Early Entrance Of The National Football League Draft
Early Entrance: The Road to the National Football League Draft A recent article in the Wall Street
Journal written in March 2014 discusses why underclassmen were suddenly leaving in droves for the
NFL draft. A picture on the front depicts Johnny Manziel who decided to leave Texas A M after his
redshirt sophomore season. The article states, Throughout the offices and film rooms of NFL teams,
the whispers are building: This may be the deepest NFL draft ever. It also may be the one that ruins
college football (Clark, 2014). A modification in the NFL s collective bargaining agreement with its
players, which was signed in 2011, is being accused for a shift so dramatic, some within the game
worry that the talent and recruiting of college football could possibly never be the same. The point
Clark (2014) is trying to get across is that players are rushing to drop out of college early to start their
professional careers. According to the article, in the 2014 NFL draft there were 98 underclassmen, a
34% increase from 2013 and an 85% increase from 2010, the year before the latest collective
bargaining agreement. The average age of an NFL player last season was 26 years 308 days, the
youngest since 1987 (Clark, 2014). Since the late 1980s, players who are three years out of high
school have been eligible to enter the draft. For the first few decades when underclassmen were
permitted in the draft, teams paid massive amounts of money on the top pick players who were then

Similarities Between Animal Farm Power Tends To Corrupt...
The quote Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. by Lord Acton parallels
with the novel Animal Farm by George Orwell. Once the animals overthrow Mr. Jones and become
leaders of their own farm, two pigs start to lead the farm, but one of them, Napoleon, wants full
control so he runs his co leader Snowball off of the farm. A quote by Lord Acton applies to Animal
Farm s character Napoleon and his progression of corruption throughout the novel.
The first half of the quote applies to Napoleon when he is a co leader with Snowball.Napoleon gets his
first taste of power when he and Snowball begin to run the farm. He is not corrupt, but he begins to
think that way trying to undermine his fellow comrade to get more power. Power to Napoleon is like
candy to children. Napoleon saw the opportunity to gain more power and he took the chance and ran
with it. Children will gorge themselves on candy until they are sick to their stomachs, and Napoleon
did this to try to obtain all the power he could have. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The quote begins to apply Napoleon after Snowball is run off of the farm. Once he has full control of
the farm, his actions slowly begin to just benefit him and the pigs and not the farm as a whole.
Napoleon began to change the farm s Seven Commandments for his personal gain. Starting out with
changing the fourth Commandment from No animal shall sleep in a bed. to No animal shall sleep in a
bed with sheets. To changing the idea Animalism was based upon which was all animals are equal.
The final Commandment being All animals are equal. Some animals are more equal. The pigs were
more equal than the rest of the animals because they had better rations and less work. All of these
actions made by Napoleon demonstrate his corruption

Book Of Mormon Analysis
The foundation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints began with just one sacred text.
Being Christian, Mormons believe in the Old and New Testament used by all Christians, but they
believe in the existence of a third lost book of the Bible known as the Book of Mormon. In 1823, an
angel named Moroni appeared to a then seventeen year old Joseph Smith and told him about a set of
golden plates on which there was a lost book of the bible. However, it was not until 1827 that Joseph
was found worthy to retrieve the plates for translation . The plates were written in a text referred to as
reformed Egyptian , and Mormons believe that God himself showed Joseph what the text meant. With
the help of several scribes, the first edition of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Those in New York that had converted to the Mormon church began to face persecution, so Joseph
Smith led his followers westward in 1830, stopping in Kirtland, Ohio . Some of the Mormons stayed
to settle down in Kirtland, while others continued on with Joseph Smith to Jackson County, Missouri,
where a second Mormon settlement was established . The two settlements were peaceful from 1831 to
1838 , but soon the Mormons were driven out and forced to continue their search for a home . In the
year 1839, the Mormons purchased a swampy plot of land in Illinois, and by the year 1844 had created
the beautiful settlement of Nauvoo . However, Nauvoo was not meant to be the final settlement of the
Mormons, for in 1844, the Prophet and founder of the Church, Joseph Smith, was shot while
preaching in Missouri . Fearing more persecution, and following the new leadership of Brigham
Young, the Mormons continued their journey west, and after the perilous task of crossing the Rocky
Mountains, they finally settled down in Salt Lake City, Utah in the year 1847 . Even today, this

Figurative Language In How I Live Now By Meg Rosoff
Have you ever wondered what the UK would look like in the near future? How I Live Now by Meg
Rosoff is a coming of age, war drama set in the countryside of England. This novel is written in first
person, Daisy s view. The novel follows the story of Daisy, who is a teenager living in New York City,
in the post war English countryside. The main themes of How I Live Now is adolescence and all that
comes along with adolescence, such as first love, growing up, and moving on to new things. In the
novel, How I Live Now, the author uses figurative language, style, and imagery to help draw in the
reader.
How I Live Now is about a teenager in the 21st century, who is dealing with family, love, and war
issues. The plot line follows Daisy throughout her life as a fifteen year old girl living with her
stepmother, who sends her to live with her aunt and cousins. From there, Daisy falls in love for the
first time with her cousin, Edmond, and gets separated when war strikes. After being separated, Daisy
must strive to stay alive through all the adventures life throws at her and her other cousin, Piper. There
are quotes from the text that are important to the plotline such as the following: And after a little while
of this my brain and my body and every single inch of me that was alive flooded with the feeling that I
was starving, starving, starving for Edmond. (Page 45, Line 9) This quote is important because it is the
first time that the reader finds out about Daisy s feelings for her

The Film American History X
The film American History X begins with an average American middle class family; four well
behaved children and two all American parents living in Long Beach, California. The father is killed
in a shooting, leaving his eldest son, Derek, the head of the household. Derek becomes enveloped in
Neo Nazi culture from the end of his adolescent years into early adulthood, and he becomes the leader
of a gang. At this point, his younger brother, Danny, is an adolescent and begins mimicking his older
brother s behavior. But the turning point of the movie is when Derek is convicted for murdering a
black man and serves three years in prison. This film is primarily an example of moral growth,
ontological shock, and choosing what kind of influence one wants to project onto others. Derek
realizes that he is going to be held accountable for all of the viewpoints he has endorsed to others, that
with drastic actions come drastic consequences, and that autonomy is a powerful force when fueled
with willpower. The importance of social influence is a strong theme to American History X, which is
why I think Lev Vygostky s socio cultural theories surrounding cognitive development can explain the
film s meaning well. According to Vygotsky, the interactions a person has between the environment
and other human beings determines the learning that takes place. The type of environment that a child
grows up in also greatly affects a person throughout life, as well. Vygostky also believed that tutors

Strategic Planning Requires Hard Work And Dedication
Strategic planning requires hard work and dedication. Nothing can be effectively executed without a
plan of action in place.
Blankstein (2004) states that:
Addressing the core beliefs of an entire school community is a lengthy process. It is essential to be
sure to hold the line on behaviors and language that may conflict with organizational values and
mission. Without at least commitment to behavior that supports the school values and mission, the
fundamental aspect of any school values and mission that all students will learn will become invalid
(p. 115).
The Henderson County Public Schools in North Carolina strategic plan is a thirty seven page
instrument addressing five major goals with subset goal descriptors under each. Henderson County
School goals are: (1) Focus on every child; (2) Prepare students to be globally competitive in the 21st
century; (3) Provide an effective teaching and learning environment; (4) Focus on building positive
community relationships; and (5) Maintain safe, quality energy efficient facilities.
The Henderson County Schools strategic plan vision statement says, Every student will achieve
success and graduate as a life long learners, globally competitive, prepared for college, college, and
life. The Henderson County Schools vision statement is imaginable, appropriate, feasible, focused,
flexible, and communicable. There were no additional components that would add value or validity to

The Myers Briggs Profile Is Bases
The Neo Freudian theorist on which on which the Myers Briggs profile is bases is Carl Gustav Jung.
Born in 1875 he was a Swiss psychiatrist and psychotherapist who founded analytical psychology, of
which Jung decided the central concept to be individualism. He thought that there were four basic
principal functions by which we see the world, sensation, intuition, feeling, and thinking. He claimed
that we use one of those senses is what we use most of the time. Each of the eight letters stand for
different things in the Myers Briggs profile. The letter E represents Extraversion. Which are basically
extraverts, people that are go getters in life, life working in large groups, have lots of friends, and are
easily excited by being around other people. The letter I stands for Introversion. Which are introverts,
people who are calm, reserved, take the time to reflect on ideas that explain the outside world. The
letter N represents Intuition. Intuitive type may be concerned with what is new and doing new and
different things. They see the big picture of things and are constantly brain storming ideas. They
would also rather gain understanding through insight than through hands on experiences. The Letter S
stand for sensing. People that are sensing are really concerned with what they can actually see in front
of them and approach situations with their eyes open to the facts. The letter F represents Feeling, they

Who Is Lost In La Mancha
Lost in La Mancha is a 2002 documentary about Terry Gilliam s unfinished film The Man Who Killed
Don Quixote which broke down as the result of a variety of issues seen in the various stages of
production. Issues include a lack of money to produce the film, illness, weather problems, issues with
poorly trained horses, poor organisation for the location of the film and the absence of an adequate
amount of rehearsal beforehand. Before any production took place, before even pre production begun
one of Terry Gilliam s financers pulled out of the project, so his initial 40 million dollar budget turned

He s tried many times before to create the film, he has a very unique vision and eccentric imagination.
This is why he was forced to film in Europe; America didn t want to spend so much money on a film
as out there as it was too much of a risk. The main mistake Terry Gilliam made was continuing to film
after one of his financers pulled out, taking 8 million dollars out of the previous 40 million dollar
budget they had. He should have tried to find another financer and just delay the production of the
film. But even with such a financial setback he failed to dial down any of his scenes, he explained that
he wanted every shot to be difficult , this isn t too bad and such a mindset may result in some amazing
shots but it s not a mindset that should still be in play when you lose 8 million dollars of a budget to
create a film. His First Assistant director Phil Patterson role was to mainly just organise everything
and make sure everything was matching the plan. He was also involved in making sure the project is
meeting the set due dates, in the documentary he is also seen trying to hold everything together when

Job Satisfaction, Work Attitude and Stress Tolerance of...
CHAPTER I
The PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE
INTRODUCTION
Rationale of the Study
Job satisfaction is simply how people feel about their jobs and different aspects of their jobs. It is the
extent to which people like (satisfaction) or dislike (dissatisfaction) their jobs. As it is generally
assessed, job satisfaction is an attitudinal variable. In the past, job satisfaction was approached by
some researchers from the perspective of need fulfilment that is, whether or not the job met the
employee s physical and psychological needs for the things provided by work (Cote S., and Morgan
LM, 2002).
In a report on job satisfaction by the National Center for Education Statistics (2003) revealed many
factors that contributed to higher ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Taking in to account that most of these teachers are working away from their home and family and
could only go home weekly, or the least once a month due to the distance of the schools they are
assigned.
However, districts located in the hinterland such as Paquibato, had most number of teacher applicants
every year. Reason of this scenario could be the fact that many teachers are applying for transfer to the
nearby schools after a one or two years of service and that applicant could be hired easily.
Nevertheless, some teachers had tenured in this district up to their retirement period and some had
flourished and raised their professional status and positions.
The ground for conducting this study is that it is intended to shed light on what influences how
teachers feel about their work and profession so that positive job related attitudes may be cultivated.
Theoretical Background
The Maslow s hierarchy of needs theory, a motivation theory, laid the foundation for job satisfaction
theory. It is founded in the premise that goals or needs underpin by being the fundamental source of all
desires.
This theory explains that people seek to satisfy five specific needs in life physiological needs, safety
needs, social needs, self esteem needs, and self actualization. In the levels of the five basic needs, the
person does not feel the second need until the demands of the first

  • 2. Get a Knife, Get a Dog but Get Rid of Guns by Molly Ivin Molly Ivins s Get a Knife, Get a Dog, but get Rid of Guns is the authors personal opinion on how guns should be banned from public use; she argues guns only kill that it would be safer to carry a knife or get a dog to protect us. She uses the Second Amendment to back up her argument about guns being only for the well trained militia. The claim of the argument is Guns are a Danger, so it s safer to get a knife or a dog. Ivins s argument is unclear without addressing the main reasons why guns are bad overall. Ivins s first proof of an assumption is Let me start this discussion by pointing out that I am not antigun. I am pro knife. Consider the merits of a knife (323). If Ivins s is not anti gun then why is she making this argument? She is pro knife then she gives evidence about what the good things about having a knife are. Her evidence that backs up why she argues that a knife is safer than a gun is In the first place, you have to catch up with someone in order to stab them. A general substitution of knives for guns would promote physical fitness. We d turn into a whole nation of great runners. Plus, knives don t ricochet and people are seldom killed while cleaning their knives (323). The author states why it is a good idea to carry a knife, we would have to be physically fit with good aim or skills if we were to carry a knife, But fighting against someone with a gun while the person has a knife the gun wins so it wouldn t be able to protect the person. We would ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Language Between Language And Language Language arose out of a need to communicate ideas and commands. Initially it was very basic, but in its current form language is very complex. It a adapted to the changing need of speakers. In this sense, language is a living entity which evolves in response to the changing cultural context in which it exists. Because language evolves in response to culture, the full quality of its meaning is derived from understanding the context in which it takes place. Educators must be aware of the sociocultural nature of language, understanding that language cannot be viewed as stagnant or removed from its context. This has implications for the ways that educators think about, understand and teach language, so that students have an appreciation for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although language today can be seen as far more complex than in the past, due to the growing number of cultural factors influencing it, language has been a social and cultural phenomenon since its inception. The development of language overtime illustrates the relationship between language and culture. To have a holistic appreciation for language and meaning, this relationship must be understood. It is likely that all human languages developed from one single language (Gee Hayes, 2011). As human moved, language developed in relation to the different cultures as they inherited and this led to the creation of the 6,500 languages that exist today, which does not include those which no longer exist (Gee Hayes, 2011). Cultural influence has not only been responsible for the creation of different languages, but has also created differences among the same language within different places. English for example exits in many different forms around the world. The variances in Englishes began to emerge as a result of colonisation. The colonization of America for example, led to the creation of American English, a transformation which took only weeks, as American settlers had to evolve the language to adapt to their new experiences, which British English could not accommodate as the culture in England did not include these American specific experiences and ideas (Crystal, 2013). Variations in language are specific to certain contexts. Understanding language requires ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Philosophical Basis of Education INTRODUCTION In this unit we will discuss the inter dependence of philosophy and education. After discussing the impact of philosophy on education and vice versa, we will describe briefly the different schools of philosophy viz. Naturalism, Idealism and Pragmatism, and their implications for education in curriculum, role of the teacher and the nature of discipline. While explaining the ideas advocated by different schools of philosophy on above concepts, this unit will also incorporate the views of both Western as well as Indian thinkers. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Educational philosophy depends on formal philosophy because most of the major problems of education are in fact philosophical problems. Like general philosophy, educational philosophy is speculative, prescriptive critical or analytic. NATURALISM AND EDUCATION Naturalism as a philosophy of education was developed in the 18th century. It is based on the assumpiion that nature represents the wholeness of reality. Nature, itself, is a total system that contains and explains all existence including human beings and human nature. According to naturalists the material and the physical world is govered by certain laws, and man, who is the creator of the material world, must submit to it. It denies the existence of anything beyond nature, behind nature and other than nature such as supernaturalism. In terms of epistemology or theory of knowledge, naturalists highlight the value of scientific knowledge. Francis Bacon emphasizes the inductive method for acquiring the scientific knowledge through specific observation, accumulation and generalisation. He also lays emphasis on the empirical and experimental knowledge. Naturalists also lay stress on sensory training as senses are the gateways to learning. To naturalists, values arise from the human beings interaction with the environment. Instincts. drives and impulses need to be expressed rather than repressed. If a principal has a need, first they have to justify why and then Dr. Myers will assess if the district has the money. However, the principals are required by the state to attend tier 1 APSCN (Arkansas Public School Computer Network) training yearly. The only other need of the principal, according to our superintendent, is the ability to say no when it comes to spending money. However, he also expects the principals to find other options if the district cannot afford to make the purchase that is needed. The state requires APSCN as the accounting system required in our school. He included that we use eSchool and eFinance software under that program also. Dr. Myers strongly believes that computers have a positive effect on the districts accounting and budgeting. He stated that computers make it easy to keep and share documents. Irish Stereotypes Stereotypes and the Monster They Make As seen through history, people of different racial, social, ethnic, and religious groups are made into monsters to be feared by the American media. The Irish were drawn as scary, violent drunkards who should not be trusted. The Japanese were classified as enemy aliens, and believed to be untrustworthy. Chinese were lazy, evil, womanizing workers stealing jobs. Xenophobia took a strong hold, causing mass panic of the white men at the sight of the orange and yellow men. Each of these stereotypes portrayed in the media through political cartoons created monsters in the white Americans eyes. Irish immigrants faced a stereotype of being drunk and violent. Problems you identified from the case Macro: The first problem changing the culture at British Airways was the merger of the BOAC and BEA. In 1971, the Civil Aviation Act became law and the board was to control policy over British Airways but both BOAC and BEA remained autonomous, each with its own chairman, board, and chief executive. This caused a split within British Airways throughout the 1970s and in the mid 1980. The second problem BA faced was the threat of privatization. In 1984 the government passed legislation that made BA a public limited company. The third was productivity was bad compared to other leading foreign airlines. The fourth was poor service. This was reflection a de centralized leadership style and BOAC was concerned with the jet airliner which was focusing on the task. The merger caused BA to be very controlled with a lot of rules and regulations. Privatization by the British government made BA a public limited company. (Jick Peiperl, 2011, pp. 26, 34). A greater challenge is to change the mindset of employees at all levels. The mindset is a shared way of thinking and behavior within in an organization. They are reflected in accepted behaviors and attitudes. The mindset becomes very powerful in gaining unity and focus within the organization. It provides a common focus and increases the intensity of the work being done (Jick Peiperl, 2011, p. 39). Technical: BA will have to cut cost and drive customer service. The Measurement Of Pendulum s Harmonic Motion Lab Essay Name: Kaleen Name of Lab Partners: Matt and Yesh Institution Course Instructor Date of Submission The Measurement of Pendulum s Harmonic Motion Lab #2 Abstract The specific purpose of this experiment was to verify three physical concepts based on Newton s Laws. These concepts are vector addition, force as a vector, and the law of equilibrium. The densities of two different objects were compared by measuring their masses and volumes. In this experiment, two different sets of methods of volume measurement were compared to the density computation of an object bearing a standard shape. In addition, the density computation was used to determine the buoyant force acting on different objects. At this point, it was observed that an object maintains a constant velocity if all the external forces cancel out one another (no net force results from the unbalanced forces acting on an object). In this case, a force table was used to study Newton s First Law of Motion. These forces were represented as F1, F2, and F3. Analysis of results obtained from the experiment proved that the value of F3 determined through calculations was less than the measured value of F3. In Trial#1, for example, the calculated value of F3 was 211.59g @ 2430 while the measured value of F3 was 215g @2430, translating to a % difference of 0.5g @20. Henry David Thoreau Analysis Henry David Thoreau, a nineteenth century writer, philosopher, and abolitionist, establishes himself as an outsider, a passionate rebel against the status quo, in a passage from Walden. He writes to explain why he went into the woods to live and left behind what most people would consider civilization. Especially for an audience of contemporaries in the 1850s, before the Civil War, his choice to live in the woods would have been outrageous even revolutionary. Even today, his choice to live in a small cabin in the woods would be considered counter to the status quo, so the modern audience is also intrigued by his explanation. His language and method of presenting his ideas create an argument between civilization and real life, and it is clear that he values real life in the woods over what most people would consider civilization. He pits civilization against life throughout, though he hides the reference to civilization behind a contrast to life in the words not life, and he suggests that living in civilization would be a resignation. He counters this with many references to life (nouns) and live and living (verbs), such as to live deliberately, facts of life, I had not lived, wish to live, not life, living is so dear, live deep, marrow of life, to live so sturdily. The paragraph is bursting with life references, and we immediately discern the urgency of his desire. We learn the temperament of the man through this intensity. Colleges are reluctant to admit home school graduates because they did not have an accredited diploma (Smith). Introduction Overweight and obesity are defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as an abnormal or excessive accumulation of body fat that damages the health of the individual. Nowadays, obesity is becoming widespread around the world, with complications such as diabetes and an increased risk of heart disease. Currently, it has been shown that in addition to genetic factors, the incidence of obesity is affected by environmental factors such as gut microbiota interactions, and diet through changes in gut microbiota, intestinal permeability and LPS levels. The gut microbiota consists of bacteria, fungi, viruses and protozoans, often belonging to the phyla of Frimicutes, Bacteroides, Actinobacteria, and Protebacteria (3). In the initial phase of infection, environmental strains of P. aeruginosa from any aqueous setting are inadvertently inhaled or otherwise delivered to the upper respiratory tract (Feldman, et al., 1998). It is at this stage where the expression of functional flagella is critical, providing chemotaxis toward desirable substrates, such as mucin, and the motility essential for widespread dissemination (Feldman, et al., 1998). In the normal host, the presence of defenses and additional antimicrobial peptides, the affinity of flagella components for mucin glycopeptides, and the process of mucociliary clearance are likely to eradicate such transiently inhaled organisms from the respiratory tract before any epithelial immune response is elicited (Feldman, et al., 1998). However, districts located in the hinterland such as Paquibato, had most number of teacher applicants every year. Reason of this scenario could be the fact that many teachers are applying for transfer to the nearby schools after a one or two years of service and that applicant could be hired easily.
