Literature and Language
Chapter 9 Language and Literature There is a very close relationship between language and
literature. The part of linguistics that studies the language of literature is termed LITERARY
STYLISTICS. It focuses on the study of linguistic features related to literary style. 9.1 Theoretical
background Our pursuit of style, the most elusive and fascinating phenomenon, has been enhanced
by the constant studies of generations of scholars, Style , the phenomenon, has been recognized
since the days of ancient rhetoric; stylistic , the adjective, has been with us since 1860; stylistics ,
the field, is perhaps the creation of bibliographers. (Dolores Burton, 1990) Helmut Hatzfeld was the
first biographer of stylistics and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this section, we shall briefly discuss the grammatical and semantic aspects. 9.2.1
Foregrounding and grammatical form Consider the following examples, both of which describe
inner city decay in the U.S. The first is from the Observer (29 November 1995) : ex.9 1 The
1960 dream of high rise living soon turned into a nightmare. In this sentence, there is nothing
grammatically unusual or deviant in the way the words of the sentence are put together.
However, in the following verse from a poem, the grammatical structure seems to be much more
challenging, and makes more demands on our interpretative processing of these lines: ex.9 2
Four storeys have no windows left to smash But in the fifth a chipped sill buttresses Mother and
daughter the last mistresses Of that black block condemmed to stand, not crash. The sentence in
line 2 of this verse that starts with But in the fifth is unusual in that the predicate of the sentence
is made up of a sequence of embedded elements, as we can see if we write them out in a full
form: A chipped sill buttresses mother and daughter who are the last mistresses of that black block
which is condemned to stand, not crash. Furthermore, the main verb in this sentence is buttress.
This word can be either a noun or a verb, but we would argue that it is more likely to occur as a
noun in less literary contexes. In literary texts,

School Uniforms And The American Civil Liberties Union Of...
Traditionally favored by charter and private schools, and institutions of the like, school uniforms are
being introduced to public schools at an increasing rate. The First Amendment of the United States
Constitution guarantees all citizens the right to express oneself; The American Civil Liberties
Union of Nevada states that having a choice in clothingis ...Crucial form of self expression. The
ACLU also argues that allowing students to choose their clothing is an empowering message from
the schools that a student is a maturing person who is entitled to the most basic self determination,
(Four Reasons). Self expression of style aside, choices in clothing are also a popular method of
expressing support for any variety of social causes, ideologies, and affiliations, and school uniforms
strip students of this option completely. Schools broadcast a mixed message of sorts when boasting
their appreciation and encouragement for diversity, yet enforcing a standardized uniformwhich
severely limits individuals from expressing this diversity. The Huffington Post published the
argument of a Kyler Sumter, 16, of Lindblom Math and Science Acadamy in Chicago. Kyler
argues They decide to teach us about people like Rosa Parks, Susan B. Anthony and Booker T.

Knee Injury Research Paper
Athletes Suffering from Knee Injuries are Opting for Cold Laser Therapy over Knee Surgery
By Juliet Peters
Aug 22, 2011
A knee injury can be a painful and debilitating setback for anyone, however for athletes
experiencing knee problems it can be a deal breaker that threatens to take them out the game. This
is why many professional athletes are opting to treat their knee injuries with cold laser therapy
rather than go through traditional knee surgery. Unfortunately, the athletes who rely on their knees
the most are also the ones who are prone to knee injuries. Knee damage is extremely common in
many sports, especially long distance running, competitive cycling, basketball, tennis, volleyball,
skiing and weight lifting. Most athletes training ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is why today s athletes are turning to cold laser therapy to treat knee injuries rather than
undergo knee surgery. They realize arthroscopic knee surgery is invasive and doesn t work most
of the time, and often leaves athletes dealing with the effects of less cartilage, and more arthritis
in the knee. In addition, knee replacements for young athletes aren t really an option because
they typically should only be performed on patients sixty five and older due to the lifespan of the
prosthetic. Another reason athletes make the decision to have cold laser therapy over knee
surgery is the fact that there is a long period of downtime after the surgery that would take them
away from training for their sport. Cold laser therapy or low level laser therapy is an approved
method of treatment by the U.S Food and Drug Administration, and it is primarily used to relieve
pain and the debilitating inflammation resulting from tendonitis, arthritis or a torn meniscus. It also
helps speed up the healing process so that athletes can get back to their sport quicker. Cold laser
therapy is the number one choice among athletes to rehabilitate knee injuries because this
noninvasive treatment provides them with safe, livable solutions for pain relief and allows them to
get back to doing what they love without any

A View From A Bridge
Following the Second World War in 1945, America emerged from the conflict as a prestigious
superpower and saw the 1950s begin as an era of prosperity and wealth. However, the beginnings
of the Cold War saw increased tension between the USA and the USSR and the capitalist and
communist ideologies. These clashes along with the rise of nuclear power contributed to a tense
and fearful atmosphere, giving rise to a period of McCarthyism. This saw communist witch hunts
and people accused and prosecuted for sympathising with the left political economic model. Author
Arthur Miller was one of such victims; in 1956 he was trialled and fined for refusing to give the
names of communist sympathisers before the House Un American Activities Committee.... Show

Immigration remains a popular political but also ethical topic. For one, we like to consider
ourselves progressive and moving towards a more multicultural world, yet we continue to cherry
pick immigrants with the right qualifications and skills and there is still talk of foreign born
people taking Australian jobs and being detrimental to the economy. The Syrian refugee crisis
exposes further moral and ethical issues linking to the play as even though Australia has granted
12,000 humanitarian places since March 2017, we have done little to help the 5.1 million
refugees escaping the civil war and much controversy and division remains over the topic. The
structure of A View From the Bridge is linear in showing a progression of time. The exposition
introduces the still relevant topics of cross cultural conflicts, justice and the law as well as class
through the construction of setting through staging, dialogue and characterisation. Class is
introduced through the setting, the Italian American neighbourhood of Red Hook, in a worker s
flat, clean, sparse and homely which conveys a working class household. It is also communicated
through the characterisation of Eddie achieved through dialogue and costume. His dialogue is
quite rough and casual, perhaps signifying lower levels of education, for example Where you goin

Finding The Savings Projects For Young People s Current...
Background Introduction This article aims to discover the savings projects that best appeal to
young people in current economic environment. UN (2015) declares that the worldwide labour
market circumstances persist challenging and the general situation is further complicated. In
Europe, tension situation of Ukraine causes an unfavourable effect on economic recovery activities
and confidences, which makes the reconstruction of euro region remain risky and unstable. On the
other hand, employment rate decreased sharply after the financial crisis and job creation is
extremely insufficient. Moreover, youth unemployment rates keep relatively high in European

According to Berry (2011) s report, the UK government developed the National Employment
Savings Trust (NEST) and automatically enrol workers into pension scheme, which is already
leading some young workers to a long term savings track. Furthermore, Tipper (2014) believes
that Generation Y can resonate with tenable investment approaches if savings sector could build
user reliance in investing by adopting auto enrolment programme. Networking This research
proposal uses Delphi technique to refine the research topic area. It is about forming a group of
individuals who are related to or concerned about the research area to develop a more particular
research idea (Saunders et al., 2006). I explained to three relevant course lecturers that my
research idea was involved with helping young people use financial products to save and plan
for their future. And we generated a few specific ideas, such as: the economic aspects that
required young people to start saving; the features that young people look for in savings projects;
roles of governments and savings sector in developing preferable savings projects. After
discussion, I refined my research idea to: what savings projects best appeal to young people in
current economic climate. Literature Review In recent years, savings in pension is always the

Lear and Family Essay
The Importance of Family Family is what defines one s character and identity.
Shakespeare s
tragic play, King Lear, presents a ruling family and how its members relationships
affect one another. The crumbling relationship between King Lear and his daughters
exemplifies his struggle to maintain his role in his family and his identity within
the state. Lear explains that human nature is marked by a desire for more than just
the necessities one already has. Lear needs more than the necessities of life not
only to survive but to keep his identity. However, Lear mistakes these needs and
misidentifies himself based on his titles than what he truly needs: his family.
King Lear gives a prime example of how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He then becomes lost and confused and
falls into a state of insanity.
Need is defined as a necessary duty or an obligation. Lear has given his two
eldest daughters all that he has, but Goneril and Regan do not fulfill Lear s needs
as dutiful daughters. Although Lear s daughters have all the material possessions
that they need, Lear presents them as unnatural hags (276). The state of nature
is defined by animalistic themes and insanity within the play. Lear explains that
animals need just the bare necessities. By presenting his daughters as unnatural,
Lear reinforces that his daughters live with more than the bare necessities. His
desire to retire and spend his days with Goneril and Regan do not work out as he
plans. Goneril and Regan s failure to comply with their obligation as faithful
daughters is evidenced by their cruelty towards their father which establishes the
fact that he is no longer recognized as the head of the household. Goneril and
Regan s failure to comply with their obligation as faithful daughters is clearly
evident. Lo!
ve is heavily inflected by duty, but Goneril and Regan s profession of love in the
beginning of the play proves to be false. Lear discovers that his necessity to keep
his identity is merely a desire to keep his status and recognition in the family.
His role as a father diminishes after he divides his lands between his two eldest
daughters. Though he is their father, Goneril

eliminate tax loopholes and other tricks that help big business (Rand Paul Presidential

4.3 million full time jobs, and it would increase after tax incomes for all income groups by 16%,
as well as grow the economy about 13% (The Economic Effects of Rand Paul s Tax Reform

America Needs Its Nerds Analysis
Expressing yourself is not as easy to do in society because it causes us to pretend to be
something we are not. Nerds , geeks , loser , and you are not cool . As these words are spoken we
try to hide secrets about ourselves causing us to be embarrassed to embrace our knowledge.
Friedman the author of the article, America Needs Its Nerds establishes the idea to stop losing
sight of how important knowledge is instead of putting physical strength superior in our society.
Using strong commentary Fridman begins his passage by stating something is very wrong with
the system of values in our society giving us a hint of his idea. By using a powerful statement he
gives his point of view in the way society is working. Ostracized is not a common word we hear in
regular conversations the word means to exclude someone from a group. Friedman uses this diction
in the passage to continue with his statement about discrimination against the nerds, not just one but
a huge group of people due to their wanting of knowledge. While nerds are... Show more content on

Fridman s writing creating a powerful statement in where the discrimination is in the United States.
Where we live. The nation that promised freedom, liberty, and union to all without any

has a more advanced AutoSense and Sonic technology. The motor will read the thickness of your
whiskers and send more power to the blades. With the Series 5, you re getting a wet/dry shaver

The biggest is the ability to change shaving modes. The 740s has 5 personalized shaving modes

Summary Of King George s 1775 Speech To Parliament
For 150 years, the American colonies are left alone by Great Britain to make due by themselves,
however Great Britain still had the ability to take from, tax, and control the colonies when
Britain felt need be. The American colonies in the eyes of Great Britain was simply an income.
The American colonies existed to support the core of Britain by taking things such as gold,
tobacco, and money; this happening was called solitary neglect. Although solitary neglect ended
after the 7 years war, things such as the sugar act, the writ of assistance, and the stamp act would
then be created by Britain in order to create more money. These acts would enrage American
colonists and later cause them to revolt against Britain to try and obtain freedom and become their
very own country. King George s 1775 speech to parliament is easily used to represent Great
Britain s views of the American s revolt and the Declaration of Independence is known to show the
American s reasoning for revolting against Britain.
In late October of 1775, King George and two footmen went from the Queen s place to St. James s
to give a speech to parliament. In King George s 1775 speech to parliament, talk of the American
revolution is presented. King George starts the speech ultimately by stating that America is being
completely unreasonable and very ignorant. King George says that America has been provoked and
filled with multitudes of opinions that conflict with the true constitution of the colonies. It becomes

Communication Declined
Personally, I believe the advancements in technology have greatly assisted us to communicate
with one another. However, I also believe that our communication skills have declined. The
internet was a new concept when I was younger, and the only way to reach a person was either by
phone or a letter. Then came the creation of AOL instant messenger and email. This allowed
people to speak with one another without the need to remember a telephone number or mailing
address. These new tools also assisted in the introduction of a lackadaisical mentality during
conversation. I specifically remember using a/s/l instead of typing out age, sex and location when I
was in a chat room. We became accustomed to using abbreviated terms and the need for using
proper punctuation or grammar was never frowned upon. Now my primary communicationtool is a
text message since it is much faster than calling an acquaintance. Email is the primary tool I use
when I need to formally communicate. I can be as formal as necessary while compiling my
thoughts and proofread the message prior to sending it to the recipient.
In my opinion, the formality of conversations has dramatically declined compared to a few decades
ago. Instead we speak in fragmented ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

with one another, since my definition of communication is a discussing a specific topic with the
knowledge to do so. This allows us to conduct meaningful and thought driving conversations even if

many things that brought about the creation of The Beatles most influential album. Before The

The wah wah pedal is now a standard for all rock musicians. As a result of The Beatles being the
number one band in the world, they had access to the industries latest recording tools. Perhaps
one of the most important recording tools used by the band in recording was automatic double
tracking or ADT. This device allowed the band to flawlessly double any given sound. ADT was
used mostly on vocals to enhance the sound of the singer. The Beatles also used an innovative
tool known as the Dolby noise reduction system (Dolby NRS). This device reduced the build up
of noise during the over dubbing process. Dolby NRS is still widely used in the field of music
recording. In an effort to find a new sound, The Beatles cracked open an amplifier and put a fan
inside. Just as talking into a fan distorts a voice, the band found that it has the same effect on an
instrument. Many of the sounds were added onto the tracks randomly which makes the album
virtually impossible to rerecord or perform live. Drugs played a role in the recording of Sgt.
Pepper s. The group was notoriously known to experiment with the drugs LSD and Marijuana. The
entire album has debatable drug references, but the one thing that can not be argued is that the
entire group was high on these drugs throughout the recording process. The record has many sounds
that will be used later in the psychedelic

Parallel Universe In A Seat In The Garden By Thomas King

Most Common Illegal Drugs in the United States Essay
Marijuana is a drug formed by drying out the shredded flowers, stems, and leaves of the Indian
hemp plant. It is also the most common illegal drug used in the United States, and the second
most used drug in the world, behind alcohol. According to one national survey, approximately
6,000 Americans try marijuana for the first time every day. Marijuana has been proven to
positively affect some illnesses, and the Medical Legalization Movement has made great progress
in the US (randomhistory.com 2007 2014). However, should the drug be approved for
recreational purposes? Several significant reasons lead me to believe it should be. One major
reason is the income. California, where marijuana is legal for medical use, finds the substance to be

Growing a plant like this on public grounds may be unsafe for the surrounding ecosystem as well
as hikers or visitors to the park. Legalizing the drug would get rid of any motives to cultivate
such illicit farms. This would effectively save millions in efforts to rid of these plants and
environmental clean up costs (www.mpp.org). California s taxpayer s are also shelling out for
law enforcement officers to chase down and arrest marijuana consumers. According to FBI
statistics, California arrested 74,119 people on marijuana charges in 2007 nearly 80 percent of
those were for simple possession (www.mpp.org). In 2010, over 52 percent of all drug arrests in
California were marijuana related, which is the highest it s been since 1995. Despite all the
efforts by law enforcement officers and the exponential sum of money paid by taxpayers,
chasing down people for using this plant costs us real money and isn t proving an effective
strategy for curbing its use (F. Aaron Smith, California policy director for the Marijuana Policy
Project, 2013). The closing statements in the previous paragraph lead to the next senior reason for
marijuana s regulation: the marijuana related crime. Marijuana s share in the percentage of total
drug arrests in California hit a high in 2010, reaching 52.1 percent. While it has ever so slightly
fallen in the years following, it is still a substantial statistic; more than half of all drug arrests.

Primitive Methodist Society Chapter 14
This chapter begins in the year that five working class MPs closely associated with the Primitive
Methodist Connexion entered the House of Commons. It ends prior to the South African War: a test
of Primitive Methodism s commitment to peace.
It will demonstrate that the Church and its members engaged increasingly in political activity,
primarily through a commitment to the Liberal Party. Their support for trade unions and the
prominence they gave to the Land Question was notable, a reflection of the interests of their core
membership: commonly miners and agricultural labourers residing in industrial villages and the
countryside. Their allegiance to the Liberal Party began to fracture during the Home Rule debate
and consequential to some ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The miners had refused to accept significant wage reductions and the owners had locked them
out. The newspaper described the lockout as The Coal War and the dispute dominated its pages
for several months. Letters from Primitive Methodist ministers described the dire straits of those
affected by the dispute and asked for donations of clothes and money to assist those on strike.
Huge numbers of Primitive donors responded. However, in addition to alleviating distress, at least
one minister took an active part in demonstrations in favour of the miners, marching under his
chapel banner. Another chaired meetings in support of the miners and expressed his indignation at
the conduct of the Masters Federation . Although one anonymous correspondent to Primitive
Methodist, while supporting the justice of the miners case, blamed them for not accepting
arbitration, the editorials and all other correspondence were firmly behind the miners. One
editorial blamed the coalowners for seeking such a large reduction in wages, describing their
actions as positive greed and a wrong headed policy on their part . He continued by affirming the
Connexion s sympathy with the miners, and with other classes of toilers in this country . The
miners deserved to be well paid . The Government eventually interceded to end the dispute; an
intervention warmly welcomed by the paper, which hoped for the creation of Boards of
Conciliation on which both employers and employees would be equally

Comparing The Protest Song Glory By Common And John Legend
Protest Music is music everyone can relate to while they are protesting. When listening to
protest music everyone feels and embodies the same emotion. They are motivated to keep going
because they are all fighting for an injustice and the music is what helps them keep going. For
example, the song titled Glory by Common and John Legend is a great protest song, and it is
usually heard at Black Lives Matter protests today. Glory is a song about how there is still
inequality in America today, however, imagining that one day everyone will be considered equal,
and there will be no differences between races and genders. The song gives people hope, that one
day things will get better.
There is still racism and inequality in this country and African Americans are disproportionately
impacted by a lot of factors which include, discrimination by police officers, housing, job
opportunities, mass incarceration, and much more. Glory is such a great song to listen to at a
protest because there is so much history in the song, and people are ... Show more content on

The message is that African Americans are fighting so they can be seen and treated as equal.
They message is also to stand up against authority and take a stand and rise against oppression.
People at protests can relate to the lyrics and feel the pain that African Americans have gone
through, and they are angry. African Americans are taking a stand and saying enough is enough.
So, this is why Glory is a great song to play at a protest because people are inspired and feel like it
is their duty to walk the streets and call for a mandatory change. Glory is a powerful song, and
for the people listening, they know that there is still a lot of work to be done and that someday it

strokes[1], minor and major, which affects each individual and their families. A stroke can take
away an individual s confidence and self independence meaning the individual will need care from
medical professionals and will have to undergo rehabilitation. The rehabilitation process for stroke
patients requires the patients to attend different specialists within a hospital depending on the
severity of the stroke and the damage it has caused to the patients. The patients may need to attend
appointments with Occupational Therapists, Counsellors, Eye Specialists and Physiotherapists. 1.1

Rise of the Gaming Industry
Video game consoles are found in the family room of every American household and yet nobody
has given a thought about what the gaming industry has gone through to get to where it is today.
The game industry has a history going back for over fifty years. America had a major video game
crash during the year 1983 leading to Japan becoming the biggest force in the industry with the
Nintendo Entertainment System. Sony and Microsoft entered the console market beginning the
modern console race. Video games can also be a potential tool for teaching history since some take
place in a historical setting. Journalism took a new direction when video games became more

The significance of the US military funding was also pertinent in the conception of the video
game as domestic technology. The defense company Sanders Electronics was responsible for
developing the first game technology for the television in 1972 with the Magnavox Odyssey
which featured twelve games including what would be adapted by Atari into Pong in 1975. In
1976 gaming consoles began having microprocessors that allowed them to be programed thus
hardware and software became separable meaning that video games can be collected and
bought. In 1979 Atari released its success story Space Invaders. The early 1980s saw the game
industry going from strength to strength with many consoles from Sega, Nintendo, Atari, Sony,
and Microsoft. This era was known as the golden age of arcade games. (Games and Gaming: An
Introduction to New Media page twenty). However this golden age would be short lived when
there was a major recession that came to be known as the North American video game crash of
1983.
The gaming industry hit a massive recession in the year 1983 which is now known as the video
game crash of 83 during which many American game companies such as Atari went bankrupt. Atari
is the most famous with this incident because some of their releases coincided with this crash, The

Aristotle Good Life Analysis
Contrary to popular belief, Aristotle is the father of modern psychology and took a very early crack
at helping folks achieve happiness. In Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle attempted to define the good
life a term that had a very different meaning then. Aristotle believed that happiness was determined
by a person s understanding of virtueand how closely their behaviors mirrored those virtues. Good
action, if practiced enough, turned into good habits which led to a good life even in suffering.
In other words, virtue was not simply a matter of what one believed but how one behaved. In
striving for identity, then, what you do is as important as what you believe.

The individuals charged with maintaining cohesion in this balancing act of freedom and order are
the same ones shaking the tree.
Part of what exacerbates the problem, even more, is the free and pluralistic nature of our society,
viewed historically as a strength with a fundamental vulnerability. In culturally monolithic societies,
differences may exist, but the norms are largely reinforced and there are common core values that
are shared with the same degree of priority from household to household. We are also relatively
young and our demographics have been in flux. Unlike, England, Spain or France our national
identity doesn t span century upon century. I mean, it sort of does, but not to the same extent and

HPV: A Cause for Concern
1.Introduction
Human papillomavirus or HPV is one of the most common viruses that are transmitted through
sexual activity. A virus is sometimes referred to an obligate intracellular parasite, which cannot
multiply outside of a living cell. Transmission can occur through hand to hand contact, exposure to
contaminated blood, and shared objects. Typical exposure is achieved through skin to skin contact
during intercourse. HPV can pass from person to person with no signs or symptoms. Development
of symptoms can occur years after initial infection. Many cases of HPV can clear up on their own.
If a reoccurring case of HPV is left untreated, then a papilloma ... Show more content on

Detections methods have improved over the years for identification with the use of swabs from
cutaneous epithelium or plucked hairs. These methods primarily identify beta and gamma types of
viruses. Most infected individuals eliminate the virus without developing clinical manifestations.
Closely related types of virus can show distinct pathologies in HPV. While their genetic
sequences can be similar, their pathologies and virulence can be different. HPV six and eleven
share 85% sequence identity. HPV six is found in anogenital warts while HPV eleven is primarily
responsible for laryngeal papillomas. HPV thirteen shares a 78% likeness with both HPV six and
eleven but doesn t cause the same pathologies. HPV seven and forty have an 87% resemblance in
sequence and both cause butchers warts.
3.Structure and Function
HPV is a non enveloped virus with double stranded DNA that is protected by an icosahedral capsid.
An icosahedral is a polyhedral with twenty faces. The genome consists of double stranded circles
with approximately eight thousand base pairs containing eight or nine open reading frames. Gene
expression involves multiple promoters and complex patterns of splicing. The HPV genome
separates into three regions; the long control region, early region, and a late region. The early
region contains no coding for structural proteins in

Gang Activity Of A Gang
For decades there have been an abundance amount of gang activity going on around the world
and it continues to grow. Every year there is an increasing amount of teenagers over 600,000 that
are rushed to the emergency rooms and taken into hospital care due to gang related injuries
(Forster, Grigsby, Unger Sussman, 2015). Most of these children are very young and have not
even enter high school, and others have not even completed middle school. Many of the teens that
have been rushed to the hospital have also been involved in some sort of a serious violent gang
related activity themselves, and by the age of 17, they would have already been in a physical
fight, or would have already been initiated into a gang. In most cases when being initiated into a
gang the member awaiting to be apart of a gang must commit some sort of crime, such as theft of a
vehicle, or robbery. According to Forster, Grigsby, Unger, and Sussman, community violence
exposure, having friends or family members in a gang, and having lower social self control, would
all have a positive association to aggressive behavior, within the youth community. This is the
hypothesis that was created by the researchers in which they speculated before completing the task.
This information would also be explored on whether or not gender variations played a role in a
youth s aggression, but there would be no actual theoretical predication about the gender differences

Foreign Aid For Economic And Humanitarian Development...
Post the Oslo Accords in 1993, multiple countries supported aid for economic and humanitarian
development in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. Foreign aid was also used to support the
initiation of a peace process between the Palestinians and Israelis. There was a hope of an
improvement in the economic standing in the region from both the international community and
majority of the Palestinian population. However, it is arguable that the economy of the occupied
Gaza Stripand West Bankhas in fact plummeted to an even worse condition than before the Oslo
Accords. Although there have been positive short term outcomes from the Accords, there have been
far more long term and complex consequences. Donor countries, most importantly the United
States, were not able to effectively allocate aid in order to reduce the inefficiency of the Palestinian
economy. The inability of the United States to provide stable economic and humanitarian
development within Palestine is the result of three main issues: Israeli military occupation and
blockades, the unintentional implementation of a dependency for aid in occupied Palestine, and
political patronage.
Focusing on the United States as a major donor, U.S. bilateral economic and humanitarian
assistance to Palestine will be unsuccessful with continuing support towards Israeli military
occupation and blockades in the occupied West Bank. Palestine has been allocated approximately
$5 billion in U.S. bilateral economic assistance post the Oslo

This type of legislation provides a framework whereas an application can be made to further detain
a prisoner who is due to release as they are deemed to be an unacceptable risk of further offending
and their further detention will protect the community (Field, 2003).
Whilst it is generally accepted that the community broadly welcomes such imposing and punitive
legislation, it is imperative that our disgust for these offences/offenders does not prevent us from
finding the injustice on an ethical and moral basis (Wortley and Smallbone, 2003).
One of the fundamental principles of the Criminal Law System is the presumption of innocence
until proven guilty (McSherry, 2003). By enacting punitive legislation such as the examples given
above, it has been said that it is removing this Common law right from the individual (Greig,
1995). It has also been said that it creates an exception to the general principle of law that no
person shall be imprisoned unless a court comprised of Judge/Jury is convinced, beyond reasonable
doubt that the person committed a very serious offence. Thereby effectively allowing people to be
detained without the burden of proving guilt (Keon Cohen, 1992).

Compare Sonnet 130 By Shakespeare
Poems use lots of different ways to express personal relationships. The authors of these poems can
use language, tone, structure and many other ways to convey personal relationships. The poem
Valentine by Carol Ann Duffy uses many of these aspects. The main idea of this poem is to
compare an onion to the lovea woman has for her lover. The poem Sonnet130 by Shakespeare also
uses language, tone, structure and imagery. This poem however uses them in a different way. This
poem is about how a man loves his wife/lover in his own special way. These two poems use
language, tone, structure, rhyme/rhythm and imagery to express a personal relationship.
Language is a very important part of every poem as it helps convey the author s message. Poems
can use lots of different language devices to convey the message and really grab the reader s
attention. You can use a simile, which is making a comparison of two things using like or as.
Like in Valentine it will blind you with tears like a lover is a simile. This shows how a lover can
leave you in tears when the leave you heartbroken. The same with an onion as when you cut deeper

Analysis Of Wonder Woman
At First the World didn t Deserve Wonder Woman
When we think about the genre that is Superheroes, there are many names that come to mind
Superman, Thor, Batman, and Ironman to name a few. That the superhero world is a boy s club,
were the focus is on them saving the world and while there are women in the genre they have not
been the focus, but recently that changed with the release of Wonder Woman. Given the recent
political issues and what many feels is an attack on the female form, Wonder Woman was a bright
light for not only for women and little girls alike, but for the superhero genre as well. Wonder
Woman is the ideal of girl power and strength. She is as strong and courageous as any man; thus,
she has earned the respect of both females and males around the world.
We were first introduced to Wonder Woman during World War II, by William Moulton Marston, a

Labour Movement Pros And Cons
The Labor Movement generated opposition from both the government and the public since they
both saw unions as violent and lawless. The government used force to control the unions showing
their disgust for the views and actions of these organizations. Well, organized and growing
businesses took the advantage in the struggle with labor, so the workersstarted labor unions. It is
easily argued both ways whether or not unions formed were beneficialto workers. With great
evidence though, it is proven that although beneficial in many ways, for the most part unions were
very negative towards the progress of our country.

Then on May 4 labor disorders had broken out in Haymarket Square and the police were called.
Suddenly a dynamite bomb was thrown that killed or injured several dozen people. The people
wrongfully connected the Knights with the Anarchists, and the power of the Knights of Labor
came to a dismal end.
The Homestead strike in 1892 was the first major strike to take place after the downfall of the
Knights. It started at Carnegie s steel plant in Homestead, PA. when workers refused to accept
new wage cuts. Henry Clay Frick shut down the plant and surrounded it with guards to protect the
property. The infuriated workers soon ran the guards out when they realized that Frick had
intentions of reopening the plant with strikebreakers. After a thirteen hour struggle Carnegies
Company persuaded the governor of Pennsylvania to provide help, the state militia was
summoned to restore peace. The company began to bring in strikebreaker to replace employees
who had walked out. Many of the leaders of the strike were prosecuted for rioting and murder. The
steel workers union was detroyed. Some members of Congress were sympathetic to Homestead
strikers. The public in general felt little sympathy for the strikers because they felt that the working
person should remain free to sell services as an individual and not through a union. Many thought

Angels In America Character Analysis
Angels in America contains many grueling subplots that focus on each character s individual story
as they intertwine together to form a Tony award winning production. Prior Walter is a
homosexual man living in New York City during the 1980s, and was recently diagnosed with
AIDS. At this point in history, Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome was considered taboo,
there was no affordable medication available to the public, and once diagnosed, it was assumed
that death was just around the corner. However, even during his weakest and most undignified
moments, Prior Walter never once tried to force attention on his situation or make others pity his
diagnosis. He lived his life as if he was completely healthy and was not face to face with death.
Prior encounters many situations and health concerns that not many people have to face at the
same time, and he does so with the utmost class and poise.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Having someone leave who means the world to you is hard enough, especially during a time of
immense physical and mental toil. The emotional battle that Prior has to go through is only
tolerable by the love and generosity of his good friend, Belize, and his new friend, Harper Pitt.
Prior is without a doubt the strongest character seen in Angels in America not just because of his
diagnosis or abandonment, but because never once does he complain about his situation. He is
toying with life and death throughout both parts of Kushner s production and never once does he
pity himself or make others feel bad for him. He takes his situation as it is and strives to get
through out without once overflowing himself with woes, and forever more exemplifying his true

Elizabeth And Akbar
This essay will be discussing chapter 2 which is Elizabeth and Akbar, chapter 4 Kangxi and
Louis XIV, chapter 8 Bismark and Ito and chapter 10 Hitler and Stalin. This essay will discuss
each one of the leaders in the chapters and how they came to power, how they ruled the people,
and how they dealt with outside forces. This essay will also talk about how all these leaders had
deal with governmental change and how they dealt with it. Queen Elizabeth and Akbar were
both leaders that rolled their own country and focused heavily on religion to roll their countries.
Elizabeth was a Protestant ruler. Elizabeth became Queen on November 17 1558. She restored
Protestant Christianity as the official religion of England. If you refused to attend church you
can be punished. People would be punished if they were not Protestant and could face fine and
the possibility of death. Elizabeth served as Queen of England for 44 years. Akbar was a ruler
of the Mughal Empire in the 1500s. Akbar grew up with a Sunni father and a Shiite mother. He
expanded the Mughal Empire to the greatest extent. He used religion to help control his
government and inforce laws on his people. Elizabeth and Akbar both proved that the use of
religious conflict to strengthen their own rule can make the rule stronger and keep their people in
control. Elizabeth and Akbar also proved that religious preference can only bring a divided state
and not a unified state. Kangxi and Louis XIV were both rulers

King Leary Essay
King Leary The notion of celebrity status is one that is often overlooked and many people have
a one sided opinion on the life of a celebrity. Many people think the life of a celebrity as being
one of relaxation and stress free when in reality they secretly face problems that come with the
allure of fame. In the novel King Leary, written by Paul Quarrington, is an insightful book about
the game of hockey set in the 1900s. There are several characters that emerge throughout the
novel, but the main character is named Percival Leary. Percival was the best hockey player of that
era. Throughout the novel Percival, who is now in a nursing home, looks back at and re lives
events that happened to him on his life journey. The novel is... Show more content on

All of a sudden here was a crashing sound, and Manny came flying through one of the parish hall
s stained glass window. (Quarrington 55) The allure of fame and celebrity status has led to the
demise of several professional athletes because of peer pressure. For example, former Vancouver
Canucks NHL tough guy Rick Rypien was overcome by peer pressure when he assumed the role
of team enforcer. He was aware that when his team needed a spark he would have to get into a
fight with the opposing team s tough guy. This ultimately led to alcohol abuse and depression
which ultimately led to his suicide in early 2011. Throughout the course of the novel, the theme
of depression is another issue faced by celebrities and the character of Manfred Ozikean. This is
a perfect example of how depression can lead to a change in one s mental health. Depression has
become more and more common in the past twenty years. One in every ten Canadians will suffer
from depression and these odds increase in celebrities and athletes. This is proven through the
character of Manfred Ozikean as his depression begins to set in when his alcoholic tendencies
cause him to become separated from his wife. Manfred s depression is a result of his lack of
confidence in himself so he resorted to alcohol as his way out. He got himself arrested two or
three times drunk and disorderly, creating a public spectacle and once he disappeared

  • 2. Literature and Language Chapter 9 Language and Literature There is a very close relationship between language and literature. The part of linguistics that studies the language of literature is termed LITERARY STYLISTICS. It focuses on the study of linguistic features related to literary style. 9.1 Theoretical background Our pursuit of style, the most elusive and fascinating phenomenon, has been enhanced by the constant studies of generations of scholars, Style , the phenomenon, has been recognized since the days of ancient rhetoric; stylistic , the adjective, has been with us since 1860; stylistics , the field, is perhaps the creation of bibliographers. In this section, we shall briefly discuss the grammatical and semantic aspects. 9.2.1 Foregrounding and grammatical form Consider the following examples, both of which describe inner city decay in the U.S. The first is from the Observer (29 November 1995) : ex.9 1 The 1960 dream of high rise living soon turned into a nightmare. In this sentence, there is nothing grammatically unusual or deviant in the way the words of the sentence are put together. However, in the following verse from a poem, the grammatical structure seems to be much more challenging, and makes more demands on our interpretative processing of these lines: ex.9 2 Four storeys have no windows left to smash But in the fifth a chipped sill buttresses Mother and daughter the last mistresses Of that black block condemmed to stand, not crash. The sentence in line 2 of this verse that starts with But in the fifth is unusual in that the predicate of the sentence is made up of a sequence of embedded elements, as we can see if we write them out in a full form: A chipped sill buttresses mother and daughter who are the last mistresses of that black block which is condemned to stand, not crash. Furthermore, the main verb in this sentence is buttress. This word can be either a noun or a verb, but we would argue that it is more likely to occur as a noun in less literary contexes. Knee Injury Research Paper Athletes Suffering from Knee Injuries are Opting for Cold Laser Therapy over Knee Surgery By Juliet Peters Aug 22, 2011 A knee injury can be a painful and debilitating setback for anyone, however for athletes experiencing knee problems it can be a deal breaker that threatens to take them out the game. This is why many professional athletes are opting to treat their knee injuries with cold laser therapy rather than go through traditional knee surgery. Unfortunately, the athletes who rely on their knees the most are also the ones who are prone to knee injuries. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is why today s athletes are turning to cold laser therapy to treat knee injuries rather than undergo knee surgery. They realize arthroscopic knee surgery is invasive and doesn t work most of the time, and often leaves athletes dealing with the effects of less cartilage, and more arthritis in the knee. In addition, knee replacements for young athletes aren t really an option because they typically should only be performed on patients sixty five and older due to the lifespan of the prosthetic. Another reason athletes make the decision to have cold laser therapy over knee surgery is the fact that there is a long period of downtime after the surgery that would take them away from training for their sport. Cold laser therapy or low level laser therapy is an approved method of treatment by the U.S Food and Drug Administration, and it is primarily used to relieve pain and the debilitating inflammation resulting from tendonitis, arthritis or a torn meniscus. It also helps speed up the healing process so that athletes can get back to their sport quicker. Cold laser therapy is the number one choice among athletes to rehabilitate knee injuries because this noninvasive treatment provides them with safe, livable solutions for pain relief and allows them to get back to doing what they love without any ... However, the beginnings of the Cold War saw increased tension between the USA and the USSR and the capitalist and communist ideologies. These clashes along with the rise of nuclear power contributed to a tense and fearful atmosphere, giving rise to a period of McCarthyism. This saw communist witch hunts and people accused and prosecuted for sympathising with the left political economic model. Summary Of King George s 1775 Speech To Parliament For 150 years, the American colonies are left alone by Great Britain to make due by themselves, however Great Britain still had the ability to take from, tax, and control the colonies when Britain felt need be. The American colonies in the eyes of Great Britain was simply an income. The American colonies existed to support the core of Britain by taking things such as gold, tobacco, and money; this happening was called solitary neglect. Although solitary neglect ended after the 7 years war, things such as the sugar act, the writ of assistance, and the stamp act would then be created by Britain in order to create more money. These acts would enrage American colonists and later cause them to revolt against Britain to try and obtain freedom and become their very own country. King George s 1775 speech to parliament is easily used to represent Great Britain s views of the American s revolt and the Declaration of Independence is known to show the American s reasoning for revolting against Britain. Then came the creation of AOL instant messenger and email. This allowed people to speak with one another without the need to remember a telephone number or mailing address. These new tools also assisted in the introduction of a lackadaisical mentality during conversation. I specifically remember using a/s/l instead of typing out age, sex and location when I was in a chat room. Letters from Primitive Methodist ministers described the dire straits of those affected by the dispute and asked for donations of clothes and money to assist those on strike. Huge numbers of Primitive donors responded. However, in addition to alleviating distress, at least one minister took an active part in demonstrations in favour of the miners, marching under his chapel banner. Another chaired meetings in support of the miners and expressed his indignation at the conduct of the Masters Federation . Although one anonymous correspondent to Primitive Methodist, while supporting the justice of the miners case, blamed them for not accepting arbitration, the editorials and all other correspondence were firmly behind the miners. One editorial blamed the coalowners for seeking such a large reduction in wages, describing their actions as positive greed and a wrong headed policy on their part . Post the Oslo Accords in 1993, multiple countries supported aid for economic and humanitarian development in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. Foreign aid was also used to support the initiation of a peace process between the Palestinians and Israelis. There was a hope of an improvement in the economic standing in the region from both the international community and majority of the Palestinian population. However, it is arguable that the economy of the occupied Gaza Stripand West Bankhas in fact plummeted to an even worse condition than before the Oslo Accords. Although there have been positive short term outcomes from the Accords, there have been far more long term and complex consequences. Donor countries, most importantly the United States, were not able to effectively allocate aid in order to reduce the inefficiency of the Palestinian economy. The inability of the United States to provide stable economic and humanitarian development within Palestine is the result of three main issues: Israeli military occupation and blockades, the unintentional implementation of a dependency for aid in occupied Palestine, and political patronage.
