Current Status of the Electronic Health Records in the...
For years now, the healthcare system in the United States have managed patient s health records
through paper charting, this has since changed for the better with the introduction of an electronic
medical record (EMR) system. This type of system has helped healthcare providers, hospitals and
other ambulatory institutions extract data from a patient s chart to help expedite clinical diagnosis and
providing necessary care. Although this form of technology shows great promise, studies have shown
that this system is just a foundation to the next evolution of health technology. The transformation of
EMR to electronic heath record system (EHR) is the ultimate goal of the federal government.
Adoption of Meaningful Use in Today s Healthcare ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Currently only 4.4% of hospital meet a majority of the fourteen core measures of meaningful use (pg.
122). With such a slow progression to adopt an EHR system, government groups such as CMS have
been encouraged by the government to provide financial incentives to providers who adopt the
meaningful use requirements via EHR and those who fail to adopt may face penalties like the
reduction of Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements (Hebda Czar, 2013, p.281). Benefits to EHR
over Paper charting One of the primary reasons that the electronic health system exist is to allow
universal access to a health records by all healthcare professionals providing care to a particular
patient. In a society with a vastly growing population with increasing comorbidities and demands for
sooner diagnoses; the role of the paper charting no longer meets the demands of today s healthcare
system. If for example a patient with a history of Type II diabetes was admitted to the ER, the
presence of his records through an EHR system can confirm that is he has had uncontrolled diabetes
for some years now and fast interventions can be initiated to provide optimal care. This system
provides an updated and accurate snapshot of a patient s health history, most importantly this type of
communication is a key element in emergent situations when a patient finds themselves

Praxis Experience In Residential Leadership Community
Living in the Residential Leadership Community during my freshman year at Virginia Tech was an
experience that yielded many results. For one, I developed a holistic leadership philosophy where
leadership is defined as the relationship between a leader and his or her followers in which the two
parties are bound by common values. In this relationship, the two parties are devoted to bringing the
other to a higher level of moral character in the path toward accomplishing group goals. Social
change, then, transcends through this relationship because of such moral change and goal
achievement. However, leadership development did not cease with philosophical discussions
concerning the definition and boundaries of leadership. After the development of our leadership
theory, students were asked to partake in a Praxis Experience, in which each student was allowed the
freedom to explore his or her personal leadership philosophy in the local community. For my project, I
chose to study the leadership styles of public health officials in rural Appalachia. With this study, I
worked closely with countless individuals devoted to changing the face of Appalachian health, and
further developed a language to discuss the health issues plaguing the region. Because of these studies,
I feel better prepared to face an ever changing world of health care in which a physician is ... Show

understanding the needs of my patients. I will be devoted to ensuring the patient, and his or her beliefs

health courses have ensured that I will become that physician and continue the path towards bettering

Conformity In Siddhartha And Life Of Pi
Conformity is the jailer of freedom and the enemy of growth. John F. Kennedy. I believe that this
quotes encapsulates the main theme that Siddhartha and The Life of Pi are try to get across.
Conformity is a constant battle, in which the characters learn more about what will make them achieve
happiness. In Herman Hesse s, Siddhartha and Life of Pi directed by Ang Lee the main characters both
experience different levels of conformity. The novel and the movie share similar goals, in that they
challenge the main character into difficult life choices, in which they find themselves. Siddhartha and
Pi find their way in life by facing adversity, fighting clashing of conforming verse not conforming and
following that which they desire most; enlightenment. Siddhartha, in the beginning of the novel,

At the beginning of the novel we see foreshadowing of Siddhartha s constant tangle with conformity
when it states Govinda knew that he would not become an ordinary Brahmin... or just a stupid sheep
amongst a large herd (Hesse 4). This relates to the fact that Siddhartha doesn t want to go through the
motions of what the Brahmin s are trying to teach. Rather he wants to find his self fulfillment which
he can only do by not conforming to ways that make him who he is not. The first instance of this is
shown when Siddhartha confronts his father about leaving the house saying With your permission,
Father, I have come to tell you that I wish to leave your house tomorrow and join the ascetics. (Hesse
10). At first his father rejects his son s notion to leave, but after time has passed and Siddhartha

The Role Of Evolution In A Combat Environment
The need to evolve in a combat environment is not a new concept and seems that as technology
advances, the need to race to the forefront becomes ever more critical. Over the past few decades to
include every day of the United States combat operations in Afghanistan, the 160TH Special
Operations Aviation Regiment (SOAR)has met the needs of the warfighter and also been brutally
made aware of the need to evolve people, equipment and tactics. Starting Operation Enduring
Freedom with the MH 47E Heavy Assault Helicopter caused the Army to realize first that the
operational environment was complicated enough to need to improve the equipment (highlighted by
the events of Roberts Ridge and other operations). Technology made it possible to adapt a ... Show

Body Image Of Young Women In The Fashion Industry
The fashion industry
Under society s customs for decades, young women have been put under the pressure and anticipation
to have perfect bodies. That is, thin and curved, beautified by applying pounds of makeup to their face
but not appear ridiculously overdone. Who s responsible for these standards imposed on young
women? When a young girl picks up the model along the cover of Vogue being called flawless, it s
easy for her to then aspire to be a real life imitation of the photocopy. These companies produce
magazine covers shown with girls images daily. As if keeping the perfect body wasn t hard enough our
culture also forces girls into the forever expanding world of composition, however, body image is a
surging subject for young women. Advertisements and pictures of lean female models are all over.
Girls are measured and perplexed by their physical appearances with attire intended to enhance a
facial expression; social media, magazines, the society, marketing campaigns and advertisements add
to a strain of excellence.
Young girls not only could be better but need to be more upright and feel driven to throw the perfect
figure. The fashion industry is a major target of body image issues, as they believe clothes look better
on tall and svelte women. Established on a survey participated by 13 to 17 year old in the U.S., 90%
felt pressured by fashion and media industries to be slick, with more than 60% routinely compares

Marshmallows Research Paper
Marshmallows are a sugar based candy with a spongy consistency. Originally consumed as a
medicinal confection derived from the marshmallow plant, Althaea officinalis, marshmallows are now
consumed as a sweet snack or confection. Over time, the marshmallow s use has altered. Once used
for medicinal purposes, we now know them as a sweet snack or as a popular camping tradition roasted
marshmallows. Roasted marshmallows are formed when the marshmallow is placed at the end of a
stick and held over an open flame, causing the marshmallow to form a caramelized exterior and soft
interior. Another popular rendition of the marshmallow is its use as a part of the popular treat, s mores.

Examples Of Stewardship In North America
What does it mean to be Stewards of this earth? This question was asked in class and does a good job
of describing the situation that many Christians today face. It all depends on our definition of
stewardship. I believe that an excellent example of stewardship is the Zuni tribe. They exemplify what
it truly means to take care of the earth. As Christians we need to not only pay attention to their actions
but also seek to emulate them. The Zuni are located in New Mexico where they have lived for over
3000 years. While they they have not stayed in one place, they have cared for every place they have
lived. The land around which they are located has very little rainfall. This does not mean that they live
in a wasteland devoid of life and in fact it ranks one of the top five ecological systems in North
America (Briefing Document, Of Silt and Ancient Voices). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

They believe that they are related to awitellin citta [Mother Earth]. This means that there is a bond
between them and the world around them. They did not believe in disturbing the ground so they only
dug small holes. They took care of water so well in their desert environment that we should should try
and copy them. The Zuni did not believe in wasting any water, every drop of it was to be used for one
thing or another. According to the document ...lakes and springs can be used for drinking and
agriculture as long as it is shared harmoniously and without overconsumption (Handout A, Silt and
Ancient Voices). This quote really shows the Zuni mindset, treat the land with respect and do not take
what you do not need. This was a people who understood the balance between man and nature. They

Monologue Of Mrs Light
In stark contrast, to Roderick s recklessness towards Christina, James shows Mrs Light s ardent
devotion towards her daughter, whom she once regarded as, a very ugly baby; for the first two years I
could hardly bear to look at her... (208), and such dedication is the direct result of a religious
revelation that, in fact, Christina is profoundly beautiful. Mrs Light s about face concerning Christina
s prettiness, she conveys to Rowland as a mythological tale in which she sees a little girl of four or

concerning Roderick s treatment of his fiancée, I believe that, really, you don t greatly care for your
friend in America... (216), and what she says next is the trait of someone who is perceptive in judging
the moral conduct of others, any more than you do for me. You are one of the men who care only for
themselves and for what they can make of themselves. (216) Miss Light s statement seems
hypocritical as she too is self absorbed, nevertheless, her awareness of this fault in Roderick and even
herself alerts the reader to the possibility she cares enough for the artist in order for him to leave her
with some semblance of dignity.
At any rate, Roderick tries to disprove her theory that he is

Coyote Omnivore
The Coyote, part of the biological family of canidae, look appears in between a wolf and fox, and is an
opportunistic omnivore predator and scavenger that it s native in North America. Coyote are highly
adaptable species, even when it moves into human occupied territory. They adjust their hunting
techniques to whatever prey they laid its eye onto. For hunting smaller prey alone, they usually stalk
behind the prey and pounce onto them; for bigger prey such as deer, they hunt in small packs and take
down the prey as one. Because of their ability of adapting most habitats, like deserts, plains, and
grasslands, they can spread their habitat range all across the continent, even in large cities in urban
area (Baker Bonine 2015). Originating in the west of North America, the coyote spread eastward into
Ontario, and continue move forwards to Quebec and other eastern provinces (Dumancic Caverley,

Containerisation
What is containerization and how did the innovative use of containers transform the distribution of
goods? Containerisation is a method of distributing merchandise in a unitised form suitable for
transportation by rail, road, air, canal and sea. (Branch, 1996, p.194). The simple principle of the
container has undoubtedly made the global economy grow, and brought the world closer together
through ease of transportation (Wetherly Otter, 2008, p.86 7). To be able to use one single sized unit
for the transportation of goods was the ultimate solution to transporting cargo, which was becoming
larger part of global trade, and helped put shipping into the modern age. In 1956, Malcolm McLean
used an innovative idea to transport 58 trailer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This reduces the need for warehouse space, decreases the risk of obsolescence and improves stock
control (Hann, 2010). Faster transportation has transformed the distribution of goods in allowing a
greater selection of cargo to travel further than it was previously capable of. So what about the costs?
The container made shipping cheap (Levinson, 2006, p.10). Just after McLean s idea, it was thought
that the costs of shipping were 11 percent of the value of United States exports, and could be as high
as twenty five percent. By contrast, shipping costs in comparison to product price have fallen sharply.
(Asteris, 2009). It is not just the use of containers and ships that is responsible for the transportation
costs, the larger normal routes, the increasing competition between the major container ship operators,
such as Maesrk and Evergreen, the investment in modernising crane handling equipment and the
logistics, have all had an impact. Before containerisation, businesses thought of distribution as a series
of processes, ships, trucks and trains. Somebody had to move every box and pallet, and could easily
consume half the cost of shipping. Levinson (2006) described this as breaking bulk . With goods
waiting in warehouses ready to be moved onto the next stage, transferring and delays made shipments
slow and the delivery times erratic. The introduction of containers meant that for the first time, cargo
could be locked away when in storage. Whiskey was

Stand Your Ground Law
Stand your ground law is beneficial to the state of Florida. Stand Your Ground is a form of self
defense law that allows individuals to meet force with deadly force without an affirmative duty to
retreat (standyourground.org). The stand your ground law was adopted by Florida in 2005.
additionally, twenty two other states adopted this law, which is used in different situations in each
state, but are very similar. The law was adopted from a 17th century English common law called
Castle Doctrine. In the court case Lovett v. State, rather than creating a new defense law the stand
your ground law broadens the scope of self defense by establishing no duty to treat. Prior to the

This law has allowed drug dealer and gang members walk free from murder chargers. Furthermore,
the number of cases that claim the defense of stand your ground law are continuing to increase. Why,
because defense attorney s are using the law in a way to state legislators never imagined. This defense
has played a major role in a number of cases with minor or no injuries (Tampabay.com). For instance,
in the case of Jordan Davis, the stand your ground defense was abused by Dunn. Why, because he shot
in the car of a young teen because he thought he saw a gun, even though no harm caused. Dunn in this
case could have avoided the altercation by ignoring the young teen music in staying in his car. Since
Dunn knew the stand your ground law, he knew that he could get away with the crime. In nearly a
third of the cases the Times analyzed, defendants initiated the fight, shot an unarmed person or
pursued their victim and still went free (Tampabay.com). In fact, about two third of defendants that
used this claim used a shovel, gun, and other weapons like an ice pick, and a chair leg. Even though,
there are many factors that play a role when a decision is being made in a defense claim, like the
location of evidence, witnesses, and the size of the party and age involved in the case, facts do not
matter long as the person has a reasonable excuse. Reasonable excuses are causing people to abuse the
law, because

Gapdh Lab Report
Abstract
Affinity purification is a powerful method of isolating a protein of interest from a complex mixture of
proteins. the aim of this experiment was to isolate the enzyme GAPDH from a complex mixture of
proteins, in this case yeast lysate. in order to achieve this, a range of methods were used such as
protein, GAPDH activity and ADH assays, SDS PAGE and imumunodetection of ADH and GAPDH
on western blot. The results showed that the isolation of GAPDH was achieved albeit, extremely with
the % recoveries of the elution being abnormally high due to abnormally low initial material values.
The results suggested overall that isolation GAPDH from yeast lysate using affinity purification is in
fact a somewhat effective method.
Methods
Affinity ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was especially high in elution 1 and 2 who had values of 527% and 514% respectively, indicating a
high GAPDH activity especially elution 1. This is supported by the fact that elution 1 had the highest
specific activity with a value of 0.0017 umoles/min/mg. it is however difficult to see in figure 2, with
the number of bands being seemingly lower than there should be.
The SDS PAGE Electrophoresis (figure 1) contained different samples of the yeast lysate. From the
gel the bands are clear and distinct with the YNSMY YNFT having the thickest and most distinct of
columns making the cibracon blue an efficient tool for affinity chromatography. The protein
concentration from YNSM to YNW4 fluctuated with a general decreasing trend however the gel does
not distinctively show this.
Limitations
The % protein recovery from the ADH assay was 556%, which could be due to a dilution error, most
likely that the initial material had abnormally low values. It was expected that elution 3 (YNE3) would
have the lowest activity in GAPDH, from table 2 it is clear that it had the highest specific activity but
the lowest total activity and thus the lowest % protein recovery.
Overall, the results suggest that, this was somewhat of an effective method in isolation the enzyme
GAPDH from yeast

of Terrell s skills, mannerisms, and credentials he doesn t mind sacrificing the relationships acquired

the same passion for football as his teammates and opponents he created a sense of identity and

The Effect Of Recasts And Prompts On Francophone Learners
Regarding output, Corrective Feedback (CF) caters chance for learners to improve their interlanguage
when interlocutors provide correct input (recast) or attempt eliciting the correct output from learners
(prompt). Ammar and Spada (2006) conducted research to compare the effectiveness of recasts and
prompts on Francophone learners of English at different levels. The study focused on the third person
possessive determiners (his and her) which are problematic to French native speakers. After being
instructed the rule and through some practices, learners would be given either recasts or prompts to
errors regarding his and her, or no CF in the control group. Participants were assessed three times: pre
test, immediate post test and delayed post test. The researchers discovered that instruction and
exposure plus CF are more effective than those without CF. No technique is better than the other since
prompts are more effective than recasts for lower proficiency students while high proficiency students
benefit from both equally. Although the study only focused on the binary forms (either his or her), it
suggested that prompts be applied more to improve lower level learners performance. Interaction is a
two way communication under the sociocultural theory promoting consciousness. From Swain and

Teaching ESL Writing (Final Paper)
Teaching ESL Writing
At times the plethora of professional journals and the myriad subjects treated therein seems like little
more than a dizzying exercise in redundancy and a forum for education professionals to justify their
worth in a competitive job market; however, I would like to think that there is a hidden value for those
of us whose brains seem to operate in what some might call a spiral rhetorical pattern, that as we work
our way around and around certain issues related to composition instruction, we are moving gradually
upward toward broader understanding and better practice. Some studies seem to do little more than
show the need for more studies, their authors falling back on such standard phrases as, ... Show more

Having lately read a great deal of professional literature regarding the ups and downs of teaching
college composition to ESL students, I ve noticed that students with LDs are conspicuously absent a
fact that suggests one or more possible conclusions: Students with LDs just aren t represented in
college level ESL courses; Students with LDs are there but they don t have needs separate from those
of non LD students that would require special consideration by college teachers; These students are
there and have needs requiring special attention by their teachers, but the teachers themselves lack
understanding of what those needs are and how to accommodate them.
Which of these holds most true, in general, is what I ve set out to discover, in hopes that I will find a
hidden font of knowledge addressing the singular needs of ESL students with LDs and how teachers
do, or can, meet those needs. The possibility that my first reason mentioned above might be true leads
to a political can of worms I d prefer to leave unopened; therefore, I ll concentrate on the third choice
that LD students who are also learning English as a second or other language are merely going
unrecognized due to the masking of LD symptoms behind communicative difficulties resulting from
the hardships inherent in non native language learning.

Main Street In Lake Mills Research Paper
Imagine going on a drive with your family on a beautiful evening. You drive through small towns with
magnificent trees, 100 s of years old, lining the streets. If you drove down that road many of times,
you would know that the trees were amazing. Wouldn t it be a shame to drive down that street again,

Floyd Case Summary
In the case sub judice, the County introduced seventeen pieces of evidence to be relied upon by the
Board when rendering its decision. Floyd failed to object to the introduction of any of the evidence

The Reasons Of The Cuba Embargo Against Cuba
Cuba embargo has failed. During the last 50 years, the United States government has maintained the
trade embargo against Cuba. The Cuba embargo was put in place as executive order by Kennedy in
1962 because Fidel Castro confiscated many America businesses in Cuba. The Embargo did not get
the result for it was indented. Furthermore, the embargo has been failed policy and it should be lifted
immediately for three strong reasons. First, the embargo helps Castro to stay the power. Second it is
bad for American economy. Finally it is political incorrect.
The first reason to lift the America embargo against Cuba is because the embargo helps Fidel Castro to

All three pieces exemplify these messages heavily. Of all of the works maintaining these themes,
Elizabeth Bowen s The Demon Lover displays these messages the most vehemently. Bowen s version

common portrayal of the protagonized woman, as [she is] thirty four years old after all... (Jackson 1),
which clearly puts her as an outlier for her nativity and rash decisions. The Scottish Ballad The
Daemon Lover is the most simple and direct interpretation of the concept. It is quite interesting to see
that this piece still exists considering how long it took to write it down. One of the ballad s major flaw
is its consistent repetition, such as Now I am come for the vows you promised me, /You promised me

Teotihuacan Textual Analysis
Often when studying history we encounter a paradigm of thinking that explicitly emphasizes the
importance of written history above all else. In art history however, we are struck with the issue of
navigating this paradigm in a field of study that sometimes only has visual culture for us to reference.
Because of this, it often becomes a challenge to incorporate this visual evidence with a written record,
whether it be another culture s record or a written record that isn t inherently written . And when it
comes to examining the visual culture of Post Classic Mexico, both of these are the case. With Mixtec
and Aztec codices made entirely of pictographs and glyphs, we are forced to consider colonial hybrid
documents in addition to these glyphs ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the most prominent examples of this is the debate surrounding the Great Goddess of
Teotihuacan which can be seen in Figure 2. With a lack of textual evidence to help understand this
deity s gender or potential role in Teotihuacan culture, we as historians are forced to make
assumptions often relying on modern, Western stereotypes of femininity and masculinity (Mandell,
29). As seen in Elisa C. Mandell s article A New Analysis of the Gender Attribution of the Great
Goddess of Teotihuacan from Ancient Mesoamerica, the depiction of the Great Goddess is
complicated due to a lack of obvious primary or secondary sexual organs (Mandell, 30). Because of
this, analysis of the deity s gender must be based upon more subjective elements such as clothing and
ceremonial dress. However, unlike the Aztec, we have no textual evidence like codices or colonial
hybrid documents to designate gendered clothing or depictions in Teotihuacan culture. We cannot even
assume the deity s gender from Post classic text as it can easily be misinterpreted like the initial theory
that the Great Goddess represents the rain god Tlaloc. Whereas in the post classic period we can look
at at statue of Coatlicue and connect her skirt of snakes to the textual depiction of her image, we have
no basis of comparison to identify or gender the Great Goddess. And while Mendell s argument for the
female gender of the Great Goddess remains sound, she is forced to draw from a variety of complex
representations of Teotihuacan art and iconography such as sculpture, bowls, and murals that lack a
direct translation and association which inherently leaves room

The Most Important Aspects Of Film Production In The Film...
Film Production
Movie making is telling a story with the best technology at your disposal. Tom Hanks. Film
production is one of the most important aspects of film, and the industry is one of the fastest growing
and largest grossing industries in the world. There are many different characteristics of film
production. Since the 1800 s, this business has been prevalent. Playing one of the most important roles
in the film industry. Film production has improved tremendously since its birth to its present state.
Film production has many different aspects and they all make up one of the most powerful industries
in the world.
The 1800 s were a time when the art of special effects was revolutionized. At first, they would use
motion toys to trick the eye into seeing things that were not really there. By 1905, there were the first
five cent movie theaters, or nickelodeons, that offered an inexpensive way for the public to watch
movies. These theaters caused the appeal of movies to skyrocket. The 1930 s era of film was
considered the golden age in which sound was first introduced to film. During the 1950 s, the film
industry took a huge turn with the invention of the television bringing home entertainment to ten
million people. After being in a gigantic drought because of the Vietnam War, the 1970 s brought a
resurgence of film to the United States. With the production of Jaws and Star Wars, the industry
exploded with new fans flocking in from all over the world ( History of Hollywood ).
During the 1980 s, the film industry was thought of as simple and quick entertainment. The 80s
brought films such as Batman, The Return of the Jedi, and Terminator ( History of Hollywood ). The
revolutionary special effects used in these films caused a drastic increase in the normal budget for
major films off that era. With the decline of the economy in the 90s box office revenues plummeted.
The invention of CD ROMs created a new way for people to enjoy films from home. Even though
VCRs were still very popular, but DVDs soon surpassed them and became the most popular way of
viewing film by 1997 ( History of Hollywood ).
The main reason film production has improved is because of technology. Technology has shaped

The Resistance to Change
As a person one might find that we follow a specific routine on the day to day basis. Sudden changes
to these routines feels weird and out of place. In William Faulkner s A Rose For Emily based in a
fictional town called Jefferson taking place during the twentieth century. The time period is indeed an
important factor because southern tradition was above all of the highest importance. This short story
gives the audience details of life during that time in which they followed the values of southern
tradition and the importance to never stray away from those traditions. The context of the story is
laced with subliminal messages of humanities resistance to change. In Faulkner s A Rose For Emily

In A Rose For Emily the narrator uses the rose as a symbol of resistance to change. Having been
mentioned in both the title and in the bed next to the body of Homer. Symbolizing the romance of
southern tradition (Kurtz 40). When a person receives the rose it is tradition to place it in the pages of
a book preserving its memory (Kurtz 30). Homer Barron is himself A Rose For Emily and symbolizes
southern tradition. By murdering Homer in the psychotic fashion detailed in the story she has
preserved his memory for herself. His decaying body is symbolic for the rose left in the pages of the
book (Kurtz 40). Like the Rose, Emily s watch which is usually connected to a chain in her pocket is
symbolic. Having been placed in her pocket the loud ticking is a constant reminder of how change
annoys Emily. The fact that the Keys 4 watch is not visible where she can watch time fly is an
example of Emily s pathetic attempt to hide the passing of time and control change (Schwab 215).
Emily can be compared to Queen Victoria known to adapt to traditional values and feared for straying
away from those values (Dilworth 255). This comparison is the enhancement of Emily s fear of
change because the queen herself was disgusted with the very idea of change. Prince Albert a
foreigner was the unpopular husband of Queen Victoria because of his ethnicity. In this comparison

Comparing Beowulf And Gilgamesh
The Babylonian Gilgamesh and the Christian Priest Beowulf both feature important heroes. An
important part of a hero s journey is the transformation that the hero s character goes through over the
course of the story. In Gilgamesh, Gilgamesh is an ill mannered king, while in Beowulf; Beowulf is a
great warrior for his town. These two works show the different processes of a hero and the process
they must go through to be remembered as one. Gilgamesh includes the idea that he can go on a
journey to find the cure, for him to become immortal and live forever. By contrast, Beowulf goes on a
journey by going on a mission to defeat the great monster Grendel. Elsewhere in Gilgamesh, however

and needs guidance on the right path to take. As the author states, Therefore, Gilgamesh decides to

Merger Is The Merging Of Jds Fitel Inc. And Uniphase Corp
1. Definitions:
1.1. Merger: A merger is a combining of two or more companies to form a new company . An example
of a merger is the merging of JDS Fitel Inc. and Uniphase Corp. in 1999 to form JDS Uniphase.
1.2. Acquisition: To acquire another firm, usually through the purchase of shares of the company or to
buy assets of the business directly. Acquisition is the purchase of one company by another in which no
new company is formed . An example of an acquisition is Manulife Financial Corporation s 2004
acquisition of John Hancock Financial Services Inc.

2.1. Horizontal Merger One company acquires a competing company. After being carefully reviewed
it may be deemed as anticompetitive.
2.2. Vertical Merger When a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are mixed conclusions as to whether mergers have a positive effect on innovation and synergies,
research, productivity of the new company. However, mergers and acquisitions appear to have a
positive economic effect on the company in the short term, allowing the company to reduce costs, it
can have a negative effect on productivity and innovation longer term.
3. Advantages and disadvantages of mergers:
3.1. Advantages:
3.1.1. Small, biotech firms and university labs can help to plug the innovation gap, and even some mid
size pharmaceutical firms are operating with R D visions and in a therapeutic area to build detailed
knowledge.
3.1.2. Other Economies of Scale. All the potential economies of scale that can arise is the main
advantage of merger. Example: In a horizontal merger, this could be quite extensive, especially if there
are high fixed costs in the industry. Note: if the merger was a vertical merger or Conglomerate Merger,
the scope for economies of scale would be lower.
3.1.3. Avoid Duplication. In some industries it makes sense to have a merger to avoid duplication. For
example: two bus companies may be competing over the same stretch of roads. Consumers could
benefit from a single firm with lower costs. Avoiding duplication would have environmental benefits
and help reduce congestion.
3.1.4. Regulation of Monopoly. Monopoly is characterized by an absence of competition, which often

Writing Themes In The Cold Equations By Tom Godwin
There are countless stories that one can read and forget about the next day, however this is not one.
The Cold Equations by Tom Godwin is such a moving story with so many incorporated themes that
leave an impacting message in the reader s life. I really enjoyed the writing style of Tom Godwin. He
starts with a phrase that gets the reader s attention immediately and gets us wondering why him not
being alone is such a big deal. After this he gives us the answer and some background information
about the frontier and jumps right into the story again. There s a lot of intensity to start with, but when
we are introduced to Marilyn the author gives us some relief and the way he does this is by using
literary language such as similes and metaphors and sarcasm. I love this contrast because it doesn t
stay at one level if not it changes in a way that is entertaining for the reader and it allows us to want to

intensity and story. Another reason this story stands out is because of all the theme that is incorporated
and not only the fact that there are many things but the technique used to incorporate the theme. Many
stories use the characters difficult situations or a symbol to introduce theme. On the other hand, Tom
Godwin uses situations that the reader can relate to and not only creates emotion within the characters,
but within the reader. Some themes I came across were: your actions

1970 Ford Mustang History
A 1970 Ford Mustang was the highest grossing car at Mecum Auctions sale in Chicago. The blue car
still in pristine condition was manufactured on September 18, 1969. The Mustang Boss 429 Fastback
is among the 499 cars produced for the 1970MY. It was sold as new back in the day at Boyce Ranson
Ford in Conover, North Carolina. Its odometer reads only 25,000 original meters (40,233 kilometers)
which is pretty impressive for a 47 years old car, additionally, the concours restoration make it even
more desirable. It is no surprise the pony car painted in Grabber Blue and with a white interior cabin
went under the hammer for $245K at a recent sale Classic car lovers will swoon over this particular

  • 2. Current Status of the Electronic Health Records in the... For years now, the healthcare system in the United States have managed patient s health records through paper charting, this has since changed for the better with the introduction of an electronic medical record (EMR) system. This type of system has helped healthcare providers, hospitals and other ambulatory institutions extract data from a patient s chart to help expedite clinical diagnosis and providing necessary care. Although this form of technology shows great promise, studies have shown that this system is just a foundation to the next evolution of health technology. The transformation of EMR to electronic heath record system (EHR) is the ultimate goal of the federal government. Adoption of Meaningful Use in Today s Healthcare ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Currently only 4.4% of hospital meet a majority of the fourteen core measures of meaningful use (pg. 122). With such a slow progression to adopt an EHR system, government groups such as CMS have been encouraged by the government to provide financial incentives to providers who adopt the meaningful use requirements via EHR and those who fail to adopt may face penalties like the reduction of Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements (Hebda Czar, 2013, p.281). Benefits to EHR over Paper charting One of the primary reasons that the electronic health system exist is to allow universal access to a health records by all healthcare professionals providing care to a particular patient. In a society with a vastly growing population with increasing comorbidities and demands for sooner diagnoses; the role of the paper charting no longer meets the demands of today s healthcare system. If for example a patient with a history of Type II diabetes was admitted to the ER, the presence of his records through an EHR system can confirm that is he has had uncontrolled diabetes for some years now and fast interventions can be initiated to provide optimal care. This system provides an updated and accurate snapshot of a patient s health history, most importantly this type of communication is a key element in emergent situations when a patient finds themselves ... • 3. Praxis Experience In Residential Leadership Community Living in the Residential Leadership Community during my freshman year at Virginia Tech was an experience that yielded many results. For one, I developed a holistic leadership philosophy where leadership is defined as the relationship between a leader and his or her followers in which the two parties are bound by common values. In this relationship, the two parties are devoted to bringing the other to a higher level of moral character in the path toward accomplishing group goals. Social change, then, transcends through this relationship because of such moral change and goal achievement. However, leadership development did not cease with philosophical discussions concerning the definition and boundaries of leadership. After the development of our leadership theory, students were asked to partake in a Praxis Experience, in which each student was allowed the freedom to explore his or her personal leadership philosophy in the local community. For my project, I chose to study the leadership styles of public health officials in rural Appalachia. With this study, I worked closely with countless individuals devoted to changing the face of Appalachian health, and further developed a language to discuss the health issues plaguing the region. Because of these studies, I feel better prepared to face an ever changing world of health care in which a physician is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Conformity is a constant battle, in which the characters learn more about what will make them achieve happiness. In Herman Hesse s, Siddhartha and Life of Pi directed by Ang Lee the main characters both experience different levels of conformity. The novel and the movie share similar goals, in that they challenge the main character into difficult life choices, in which they find themselves. At the beginning of the novel we see foreshadowing of Siddhartha s constant tangle with conformity when it states Govinda knew that he would not become an ordinary Brahmin... or just a stupid sheep amongst a large herd (Hesse 4). This relates to the fact that Siddhartha doesn t want to go through the motions of what the Brahmin s are trying to teach. Rather he wants to find his self fulfillment which he can only do by not conforming to ways that make him who he is not. The first instance of this is shown when Siddhartha confronts his father about leaving the house saying With your permission, Father, I have come to tell you that I wish to leave your house tomorrow and join the ascetics. The Role Of Evolution In A Combat Environment The need to evolve in a combat environment is not a new concept and seems that as technology advances, the need to race to the forefront becomes ever more critical. Over the past few decades to include every day of the United States combat operations in Afghanistan, the 160TH Special Operations Aviation Regiment (SOAR)has met the needs of the warfighter and also been brutally made aware of the need to evolve people, equipment and tactics. Body Image Of Young Women In The Fashion Industry The fashion industry Under society s customs for decades, young women have been put under the pressure and anticipation to have perfect bodies. That is, thin and curved, beautified by applying pounds of makeup to their face but not appear ridiculously overdone. Who s responsible for these standards imposed on young women? • 10. Examples Of Stewardship In North America What does it mean to be Stewards of this earth? This question was asked in class and does a good job of describing the situation that many Christians today face. It all depends on our definition of stewardship. I believe that an excellent example of stewardship is the Zuni tribe. They exemplify what it truly means to take care of the earth. As Christians we need to not only pay attention to their actions but also seek to emulate them. The Zuni are located in New Mexico where they have lived for over 3000 years. While they they have not stayed in one place, they have cared for every place they have lived. The land around which they are located has very little rainfall. • 15. Containerisation What is containerization and how did the innovative use of containers transform the distribution of goods? Containerisation is a method of distributing merchandise in a unitised form suitable for transportation by rail, road, air, canal and sea. (Branch, 1996, p.194). The simple principle of the container has undoubtedly made the global economy grow, and brought the world closer together through ease of transportation (Wetherly Otter, 2008, p.86 7). To be able to use one single sized unit for the transportation of goods was the ultimate solution to transporting cargo, which was becoming larger part of global trade, and helped put shipping into the modern age. In 1956, Malcolm McLean used an innovative idea to transport 58 trailer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This reduces the need for warehouse space, decreases the risk of obsolescence and improves stock control (Hann, 2010). Faster transportation has transformed the distribution of goods in allowing a greater selection of cargo to travel further than it was previously capable of. So what about the costs? The container made shipping cheap (Levinson, 2006, p.10). Just after McLean s idea, it was thought that the costs of shipping were 11 percent of the value of United States exports, and could be as high as twenty five percent. By contrast, shipping costs in comparison to product price have fallen sharply. (Asteris, 2009). It is not just the use of containers and ships that is responsible for the transportation costs, the larger normal routes, the increasing competition between the major container ship operators, such as Maesrk and Evergreen, the investment in modernising crane handling equipment and the logistics, have all had an impact. Before containerisation, businesses thought of distribution as a series of processes, ships, trucks and trains. Somebody had to move every box and pallet, and could easily consume half the cost of shipping. Levinson (2006) described this as breaking bulk . With goods waiting in warehouses ready to be moved onto the next stage, transferring and delays made shipments slow and the delivery times erratic. The introduction of containers meant that for the first time, cargo could be locked away when in storage. Whiskey was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Stand Your Ground is a form of self defense law that allows individuals to meet force with deadly force without an affirmative duty to retreat (standyourground.org). The stand your ground law was adopted by Florida in 2005. additionally, twenty two other states adopted this law, which is used in different situations in each state, but are very similar. The law was adopted from a 17th century English common law called Castle Doctrine. In the court case Lovett v. For instance, in the case of Jordan Davis, the stand your ground defense was abused by Dunn. Why, because he shot in the car of a young teen because he thought he saw a gun, even though no harm caused. Dunn in this case could have avoided the altercation by ignoring the young teen music in staying in his car. Since Dunn knew the stand your ground law, he knew that he could get away with the crime. Gapdh Lab Report Abstract Affinity purification is a powerful method of isolating a protein of interest from a complex mixture of proteins. the aim of this experiment was to isolate the enzyme GAPDH from a complex mixture of proteins, in this case yeast lysate. in order to achieve this, a range of methods were used such as protein, GAPDH activity and ADH assays, SDS PAGE and imumunodetection of ADH and GAPDH on western blot. The results showed that the isolation of GAPDH was achieved albeit, extremely with the % recoveries of the elution being abnormally high due to abnormally low initial material values. The SDS PAGE Electrophoresis (figure 1) contained different samples of the yeast lysate. It was expected that elution 3 (YNE3) would have the lowest activity in GAPDH, from table 2 it is clear that it had the highest specific activity but the lowest total activity and thus the lowest % protein recovery. Ammar and Spada (2006) conducted research to compare the effectiveness of recasts and prompts on Francophone learners of English at different levels. The study focused on the third person possessive determiners (his and her) which are problematic to French native speakers. After being instructed the rule and through some practices, learners would be given either recasts or prompts to errors regarding his and her, or no CF in the control group. Participants were assessed three times: pre test, immediate post test and delayed post test. The researchers discovered that instruction and exposure plus CF are more effective than those without CF. One of the most prominent examples of this is the debate surrounding the Great Goddess of Teotihuacan which can be seen in Figure 2. With a lack of textual evidence to help understand this deity s gender or potential role in Teotihuacan culture, we as historians are forced to make assumptions often relying on modern, Western stereotypes of femininity and masculinity (Mandell, 29). As seen in Elisa C. Mandell s article A New Analysis of the Gender Attribution of the Great Goddess of Teotihuacan from Ancient Mesoamerica, the depiction of the Great Goddess is complicated due to a lack of obvious primary or secondary sexual organs (Mandell, 30). Because of this, analysis of the deity s gender must be based upon more subjective elements such as clothing and ceremonial dress. However, unlike the Aztec, we have no textual evidence like codices or colonial hybrid documents to designate gendered clothing or depictions in Teotihuacan culture. We cannot even assume the deity s gender from Post classic text as it can easily be misinterpreted like the initial theory that the Great Goddess represents the rain god Tlaloc. Whereas in the post classic period we can look at at statue of Coatlicue and connect her skirt of snakes to the textual depiction of her image, we have no basis of comparison to identify or gender the Great Goddess. And while Mendell s argument for the female gender of the Great Goddess remains sound, she is forced to draw from a variety of complex representations of Teotihuacan art and iconography such as sculpture, bowls, and murals that lack a direct translation and association which inherently leaves room ... • 33. The Resistance to Change As a person one might find that we follow a specific routine on the day to day basis. Sudden changes to these routines feels weird and out of place. In William Faulkner s A Rose For Emily based in a fictional town called Jefferson taking place during the twentieth century. The time period is indeed an important factor because southern tradition was above all of the highest importance. This short story gives the audience details of life during that time in which they followed the values of southern tradition and the importance to never stray away from those traditions. The context of the story is laced with subliminal messages of humanities resistance to change. In Faulkner s A Rose For Emily the lead character is the center piece of ... In A Rose For Emily the narrator uses the rose as a symbol of resistance to change. Having been mentioned in both the title and in the bed next to the body of Homer. Symbolizing the romance of southern tradition (Kurtz 40). When a person receives the rose it is tradition to place it in the pages of a book preserving its memory (Kurtz 30). Homer Barron is himself A Rose For Emily and symbolizes southern tradition. By murdering Homer in the psychotic fashion detailed in the story she has preserved his memory for herself. His decaying body is symbolic for the rose left in the pages of the book (Kurtz 40). Like the Rose, Emily s watch which is usually connected to a chain in her pocket is symbolic. Having been placed in her pocket the loud ticking is a constant reminder of how change annoys Emily. The fact that the Keys 4 watch is not visible where she can watch time fly is an example of Emily s pathetic attempt to hide the passing of time and control change (Schwab 215). Emily can be compared to Queen Victoria known to adapt to traditional values and feared for straying away from those values (Dilworth 255). This comparison is the enhancement of Emily s fear of change because the queen herself was disgusted with the very idea of change. Prince Albert a foreigner was the unpopular husband of Queen Victoria because of his ethnicity. In this comparison Prince Albert can be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Comparing Beowulf And Gilgamesh The Babylonian Gilgamesh and the Christian Priest Beowulf both feature important heroes. An important part of a hero s journey is the transformation that the hero s character goes through over the course of the story. In Gilgamesh, Gilgamesh is an ill mannered king, while in Beowulf; Beowulf is a great warrior for his town. These two works show the different processes of a hero and the process they must go through to be remembered as one. Gilgamesh includes the idea that he can go on a journey to find the cure, for him to become immortal and live forever. By contrast, Beowulf goes on a journey by going on a mission to defeat the great monster Grendel. Elsewhere in Gilgamesh, however we find the idea, just as we do with Beowulf, that to become ... Even though Clifford is this huge dog and stands out, he beats to his own drum and does not care what people think of him. • 36. Radish Seed Experiment Essay For my seed experiment I had decided to see what the effect of sprinkling salt on a radish seed would be. So for my control group I had set six (6) cherry radish seeds in between a damp paper towel and then closed it within a Ziploc bag. For my experimental I had set it up the exact same way as the control group but I would sprinkle salt on top of seeds before I zipped up the baggie. I sprinkled the salt on the experimental seeds and dampened the paper towel once every day. Each bag was stored in the light and at room temperature (~70° F.) Before, I started I made a prediction for the experiment. • 39. Writing Themes In The Cold Equations By Tom Godwin There are countless stories that one can read and forget about the next day, however this is not one. The Cold Equations by Tom Godwin is such a moving story with so many incorporated themes that leave an impacting message in the reader s life. I really enjoyed the writing style of Tom Godwin. He starts with a phrase that gets the reader s attention immediately and gets us wondering why him not being alone is such a big deal. After this he gives us the answer and some background information about the frontier and jumps right into the story again. There s a lot of intensity to start with, but when we are introduced to Marilyn the author gives us some relief and the way he does this is by using literary language such as similes and metaphors and sarcasm. I love this contrast because it doesn t stay at one level if not it changes in a way that is entertaining for the reader and it allows us to want to read more. Not only this, but Tom Godwin uses a lot of situational and dramatic irony to add to the intensity and story. Another reason this story stands out is because of all the theme that is incorporated and not only the fact that there are many things but the technique used to incorporate the theme. Many stories use the characters difficult situations or a symbol to introduce theme. On the other hand, Tom Godwin uses situations that the reader can relate to and not only creates emotion within the characters, but within the reader. Some themes I came across were: your actions ...
