thousands of people that were pink slipped because the major business and companies had no choice
but close down their operations and let their employees go. In the middle of all this financial juncture,
when people were being dismissed from their jobs and businesses ceasing their operations, there was
only one industry that was not affected by the crisis and remained in a stable position and that was the
health care industry. The jobs of employees working in clinics, hospitals and other health care
institutions were secure. Since the stability of jobs in this industry is quite well known, many people

Rhetorical Analysis Of Is Google Making Us Stupid
Major Paper II:Rhetorical Analysis In the article, Is Google Making Us Stupid , the main argument the
author, Nicholas Carr is trying to make is to explain how the Internet becomes our only source of
information. Carr is also trying to warn oncoming generations in how the Internet has affected our
ability to read long pieces or to be able to retain information for a long period of time. Carr provides
personal experience, imagery, and a professional analysis that is backed by research to hook the
audience in and persuade them that in today s society, the Internet is only causing problems rather than
any solutions.Throughout the article Carr provides an abundant amount of rhetorical modes by giving
examples and studies from different organizations . Carr gives an insight on the positive ways the
Internet had influenced his life.
The author s tone changes in paragraph 4 when Carr talks about how the Internet has altered his mind
by crumbling away at how much he can concrete. When Carr states For me, as for others, the Net is
becoming a universal medium in paragraph four the author provides his counter argument which is to
warn the incoming generations the dangers of the Internet before his main argument. Which is that the
Internet is making us stupid and is altering how we think, by doing this it allows Carr to spend the rest
of the article refuting his main argument.
In order to move along his argument the first thing Carr does is share a problem with the

Gender and Sport Socialization Essay
Gender and Sport Socialization
Socialization is a life long process whereby the individual learns the appropriate roles and norms of
behaviour within a particular society. From birth, children are socialised into sex linked roles; in many
instances males are expected to behave in a masculine way and are encouraged to be involved in
activities, such as sport, that are traditionally regarded as male. Women however are usually expected
to behave in a feminine manner; a vast contrast to the encouragement of males to be strong, powerful,
forceful and aggressive. This is reflected in women s participation in sport, and more importantly, their
coverage in the print media, which is minimal in comparison to their male counterparts. ... Show more

The media s linking of the skill of key sports with maleness and the constant exposure of the public to
this process, has the effect of inferiorising femaleness and female activities. By implication, it seems
that women cannot do certain skilful things that the media value highly. (Williams, Louise. Silent
Armies Storm the Last Male Bastion . The Weekend Australia, February 16 17, 1985). Such examples
include ...powerful tackles...impressive slam dunk... (The Age, 24/2/2001) which are viewed as
predominately male skills, and an attribute women cannot compete with.
Notions of femininity influence views about how girls should be. This can create conflict for girls who
participate in sports that require unfeminine behaviour and produce unfeminine bodyshapes . Women
are depicted in the media in ways that reinforce the prevailing community attitudes and stereotypes
about them. They are not viewed as strong, heroic figures to be idolised on the basis of their talent and
sporting achievements. Rather in many cases, women s coverage is on the basis of sporting fashion . A
classic example of this being the extensive coverage of women s fashion in the Australian Open tennis
tournament recently held in Melbourne; Anna Kournicova becoming a symbol for women s tennis due
to her

Workforce Flexibility
Topic: Flexibility within the workforce is essential to maintain a competitive advantage. Discuss this
statement with reference to an organization of your choice 1. Introduction:
Human resource is one of the most important factors that decides the survival and success of a
company. Like every department in a company, Human resource management needs to modify
frequently during time to adapt to the continuous changes in external environment. The external
changes are as Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (2011) stated:
Population aging, a strong economy, and historically low unemployment pose new challenges in terms
of skill and labor shortages, productivity, and worker retention. Furthermore, high female labor force

The first definition mentions external environment to adapt. The second one declares the
maximization of productivity. Both are important points. By combining the two definitions, the fullest
meaning about workforce flexibility and its advantages will be drawn out.
3. Model explanation: Figure 1 Atkinson model workforce flexibility
To reflect the workforce flexibility, Atkinson (1894) came up with the model which also comprises
ways in which flexibility can be shown. Flexibility can be seen on part time jobs. This is applied for
many employees being students at school in both Vietnam and other countries. This kind of employee
need time for studying and still consider them to be able to contribute to labor force for extra money.
Part time job is one of the choices when employers only have to spend fewer hours compared to full
time jobs of working (Dutta, n.d). Or employees can seek for job sharing workplace in which 2 people
share the same job/task. Job sharing is basically a form of part time work that provides staff with the
equivalent of one full time employee while giving the job sharing employees the ability to keep their
careers on track while allowing more time for family responsibilities or other activities (Entrepreneur,
n.d). Working under these kinds of jobs gives employees enough time to balance all their
commitments. In other words,

Marriage Proposal In Pride And Prejudice By Jane Austen
In Austen s novels, the successful proposals indicate that the man asking a genuine question. This is
obvious in Darcy s second proposal to Elizabeth even though his speech does not contain a question
mark, but it implicates a question. Darcy says, You are too generous to trifle with me. If your feelings
are still what they were last April, tell me so at once. My affections and wishes are unchanged, but one
word from you will silence me on this subject for ever (458). His speech indicates that he waits for
Elizabeth s answer. Similarly, in Emma, Mr. Knightley, as Darcy, asks Emma a genuine question if she
accepts his offer or not by saying, Tell me, then, have I no chance of ever succeeding?.... My dearest
Emma,....tell me at once. Say No, if it is to be said (1034). These two previous examples show how
Austen through asking a marriage proposal gives her female characters freedom of choice. ... Show

Women s secret engagements are another way that demonstrates why the male characters keep their
engagements secret from society. For example, Edward in Sense and Sensibility is a wealthy man who
keeps his engagement to Lucy Steele as a secret for four years because Lucy does not have a fortune,
and he is afraid from his mom, Mrs. Ferrars, would not approve their marriage. As mentioned earlier,
women with no fortune have no rights to get married to men from the upper class. For the same
reason, in Emma, Mr. Frank Churchill engages secretly to Jane Fairfax because he depends on his aunt
s money, Mrs. Churchill. His aunt may refuse to approve his engagement to Jane because Jane is a
governess and belongs to a low social class, so it is difficult for Frank to reveal his engagement. He
becomes able to disclose his engagement only after the death of his aunt because he is liberated from
his aunt s financial dependence. Frank becomes financially independent and able to marry

Value In John Steinbeck s Of Mice And Men
Value in Of Mice And Men The value of reading for most people starts with their parents at a young
age. I remember when I was little, my mom would read me a story called The Runaway Bunny. It was
a story that held so much emotional value to me. As I grew older, I began to make my own decisions
and I continued to find value in the books I chose: the magic treehouse, Eleven, How The García Girls
Lost Their Accents. Because I don t always get to choose the books I read, it is unusual that I find
value in books assigned to me; however, a recent required book, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck,
supplied me with many Value buds. This American classic teaches the readers the importance of
friendship and the different ways those relationships occur in society. ... Show more content on

Steinbeck introduces Slim as the prince of the ranch . Slim is known as the person that people trust in
a setting where no one trusts each other. In Slim s introduction, he is described as wise and insightful.
His ear heard more than what was said to him, and his slow speech had overtones not of thought, but
of understanding beyond thought. (34) By knowing Slims best traits more in depth, we can see why
George is glad to have a friend like him. George is refreshed to find someone like Slim to provide him

about his relationship with Lennie.* Slim s kindness towards Lennie allows for greater trust to form

The Problem Of Digital Piracy
1.0 Situation Analysis 1.1 Introduction: Digital Piracy refers to the occurrence of unauthorized
copying of digital goods, documents, video and audio without the legal approval of the owners
(Lixuan Zhang Wayne William 2009). Software privacy is reported to cost the film industry an
estimated $58 billion per year in the United States alone (Ma et al, 2011.). Sony is a Japanese
multinational corporation, with business in a variety of areas including; consumer and professional
electronics, gaming, music and motion pictures. Piracy of Sony s content is a continuing problem, and
the management team has made various attempts at prosecuting the individuals who pirate. The
management team attempted to deter the individuals pirating, through sending legal letters threatening
action, however this only led to a short term impact. In order to work towards a long term solution, the
management team would like to understand what factors impact a person s likelihood to download
pirated material. 1.2 Problem Statement: Sony have a problem of digital piracy, which has a multitude
of impacts on the company, including huge revenue losses, losses of jobs, and an overall diminishment
on the growth of the software industry (Peace, Galletta and Thong, 2014). There are a number of
factors which contribute towards the intention to commit digital piracy. These factors include; the age
of the individual digitally pirating, the punishment severity imposed, the perceived behavioral control,

Examples Of Reverend Hale In The Crucible
Changes of Heart Throughout the course of time, it is apparent that people change because of
inevitable occurrences they go through. In Arthur Miller s The Crucible, Reverend John Hale is made
to be a complicated character. In the beginning, he is extremely confident, intelligent, and is a man
that seems to want to get the job he is assigned to do done. Towards the middle of the play, that
confidence begins to decline because of certain mishaps. In the end, Reverend Hale is a totally
different person with different views of those that he had in the beginning. Reverend John Hale is one

denounce these proceedings, I quit this court! (Miller 194). Right then and there Hale is completely
done with all the lies and the false, vengeful testimonies. The exclamation point Arthur Miller uses at
the end of Hale s line shows Hale s seriousness. Nevertheless, Reverend hale does end up coming
back to Salem. However, his incentive is much different than the incentive he first had when he first
came to Salem. He is there to try to get the innocent to lie to save themselves by confessing as shown
when Hale tells Elizabeth to plead with [Proctor] (Miller 208) to confess. Hale knew that Proctor
would not confess on paper out of mere pride. It was not expected for Hale to have such an interesting

The Main Threat to the Stability of the Weimar Republic in...
The main threat to the stability of the Weimar republic in the period 1919 1923 came from the political
violence of the extreme right There were many threats posing Germany in 1919, the political system
formed on the back of failure produced resentment towards Weimar from both the extreme left and the
right. Other factors linked to economic issues caused by war, such as hyperinflation and the war guilt
clause which `led to much suffering for the German people through loss of savings and jobs and The
constitution further hindered the stability of the government as it was fundamentally flawed. However
the main threat to the political system was from the right and influence of the elites, although the

Although the putsches were too weak and disorganized to seize power in the earlier years of Weimar it
is significant that the putsches happened at all thus highlighting the looming threat of the extreme
right. The left wing, although a potential for disaster and threat, was not as great a threat as the right to
Weimar. The KPD can be seen as a reasonable political force in the years of 1919 23 as it enjoyed
support of 10 15% of the electorate a there were continuous revolutionary disturbances. However, the
endless protests, strikes and uprisings by the extreme left gave the impression of a Bolshevik inspired
threat to Germany. Whereas the opposition of the left, army, the police and friekorps easily crushed
rebellions; removing the strong leadership of Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg. Thus due to
propaganda as a result of right wing parties, Germans began to have exaggerated fears about the
possibility of impending revolution. Revolution in Germany was a central element of Lenin s foreign
policy and the people were also aware that the soviet red army had caused revolution in Poland.
However, the perception of the threat of the extreme left never matched the reality. The revolutionary
left was divided (USPD/KPD) and did not benefit from widespread worker support. In October 1920
many USPD members joined the KPD ad the KPD joined the

Objectives Of A Balanced Scorecard
Introduction The balanced scorecard consists of four critical performance measures that managers can
use to align their company s initiatives with organizational strategy. It is one of the most important
developments in management accounting, particularly in strategic planning and control because it
offers a balanced view of how non financial and financial measures can be casually linked together
(Shutibhinyo, 2014). The purpose of this research paper is to provide a brief history of the balanced
scorecard, the components of a balanced scorecard, and finally an in depth comparative analysis of
how two companies use the balanced scorecard to meet its strategic objectives.
Origins of the Balanced Scorecard Robert S. Kaplan and David P. Norton developed the first balanced
scorecard in the early 1990s. Kaplan and Norton identify the balanced scorecard as translating an
organization s mission and strategy into a comprehensive set of performance measures that provides
the framework for a strategic measurement and management system (Kaplan and Norton, 1996). The
balanced scorecard is a tool in which managers can focus attention on four critical performance
measures: financial perspective, customer perspective, process perspective, and learning and growth
perspective (Kaplan and Norton, 1996). However, the first balanced scorecard that was published did
not demonstrate to managers how the four strategic objectives fit to form the company s overall
strategy. In other

Revision Of The Writing Process
A Study on Revision In The Writing Process
Typically, when most people think about the writing process they think of terms such as a thesis
statement, developing an outline, body paragraphs, conclusion; it s imperative to view writing this
way. We have only been taught THIS way of writing almost directly after we learned how to spell
words you decide what to write about, usually specified in the thesis statement, then you write a series
of paragraphs entailing how you came to this conclusion. Finally, you conclude your paper by
restating exactly what it was you spent an entire essay writing about. And most people will go their
entire lives believing that is the formula for an effective, well thought out work of literature. But how
often do we go back and read through our writing and completely resent how amateur and forced it
sounds? This is usually a direct result of a lack of revision within a work. Defined by the Merriam
Webster dictionary as a change or a set of changes that corrects or improves something and a new
version of something that has been corrected or changed, Revision is not a common word we think of
when writing this raises a serious question: how should you revise? In response to this to this, research
was conducted to find a general view as to the significance of revision within various individual s
writing processes. These results, along with research from several academic articles provide a clear
description as to where revision could be

Mating Selection Research Paper
Procreation and mating selection are linked to the primal desire of survival and genetic continuity. The
means of creating successful offspring are often paved through distinctive selection, which are often
tailored to specific genetic traits that one or more partners possess. These concepts are a biological
component that drives humans to reproduce with specific individuals. Since humans are unable to
procreate by asexual means, the selection of a mate and their genetic information are highly important
in concepts of reproduction. Males and females alike are psychologically and physically wired to
make mating choice based on concepts of physical presentation and characteristics. These components
often link together couples for mating purposes, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This has always been a present factor due to its capability to foresee danger, such as a fire or
unpleasant smell. Since humans tend to avoid disturbing smells to survive, this biological mechanism
has also been shown to translate with human selection. This biological component is tailored to
pheromones, or chemicals that the body produces. These pheromones are used to attract the attention
of a mate. An article titled Human Pheromones: The Science Behind the Scent of Attraction states that
pheromones signal reproductive quality when excreted by various regions such as skin, sweat glands
and urine and furthermore only about 10 percent of men give off a specific pheromone androsterone
which is the so called sex appeal ( Human Pheromones ) Humans produce sweat in places that
produce a lot of hair. While this mechanism is used to keep the body from over heating, the sweat also
comes into contact with the hair in each area. Sweat and the hair produce a specific scent that others
around you may pick up on, and depending on the individual, this scent may be pleasant or fowl.
Woman tend to prefer a musky scent where men prefer a lighter scent. Each individual scent is tailored
to a specific person, and generally the mate will find this smell pleasant and enjoy the biological
components their partner creates. This concept is actually shown to be an immune system component
where scent is used to

Developmental Stages And Theories From Birth From Adolescence
Developmental Stages and Theories from Birth to Adolescence
Neurological Development
According to the Urban Child Institute, the first three years of development are a crucial time for brain
development. The human nervous system starts to develop at around day eighteen after conception
(Carlson, 2014, p. 55). The brain stem is vital to instinctive functions, such as reflexes, breathing, and
heart rate (Urban Child Institute , 2016). These are functions in the body that just happen without
thinking about doing anything. The cerebrum is a large portion of the brain, which connects the
cerebellum to the brain stem (Urban Child Institute , 2016). This part of the brain is where complex
processes like memory and learning take place. The exterior of the cerebrum is the cerebral cortex,
this part is not fully developed until adulthood and this is where sophisticated activities, such as
planning and decision making are taking place (Urban Child Institute , 2016).
The brain is also broken into four smaller pieces called lobes, they are the occipital lobe, parietal lobe,
temporal lobe, and frontal lobe. The occipital lobe is in the back of the brain and is in charge of vision.
The parietal lobe is related to bodily sensations such as your body temperature, pressure and pain
(Urban Child Institute , 2016). The temporal lobe is intricate to hearing, language skills, social
understanding, and observations of people s eyes and faces (Urban Child Institute , 2016). The frontal

The Americans would erect a new non communist government in Nam, or south, and put at its helm,

From 1954 1963, Diem presided over an increasingly corrupt, devious, and repressive regime.
Communist guerrillas backed by North Vietnam launched a new rebellion, but a civil disobedience
campaign led by the country s Buddhist monks contributed more directly to his downfall. Brutal

Going back to get my master s degree was a tough decision for me. I always used to say I was not

not that busy. I decided to pursue the generalist track because I am not one hundred percent sure what
I want to do further on in my career. I like the idea that if I do decide later on that I want to teach I can

Our plan of care must be based on patient teaching and instruction to help resolve the persistent
gastrointestinal conditions. This patient s treatment is going to be divided in: non pharmacological
measures (lifestyle changes) and pharmacological measures.
Diet: The patient should stop eating food and beverage that can increase the acid production and
irritation in the stomach such as: fast food, spicy food, seasoning food, too hot too cold foods and
beverage containing caffeine, cocoa, chocolate, mint and citric. This patient can benefit from a balance
fiber rich: whole grains, fruits (no citric), vegetables and fat free or low fat dairy foods, low sodium,
cereals, pasta, and brown rice. The patient should select lean meats like chicken, turkey, and some
types of fish, beans, eggs, and nuts. The rich diet in fruits and vegetables; apples, cranberries, onion,
garlic, celery, and tea have shown to prevent the development of Helicobacter Pylori. In addition,
spicy foods, coffee, alcohol, and sodas can aggravate the symptoms. We need to be very careful in this
patient diet because he is suffering from hypertension, PUD (peptic ulcer disease) and gout. We should
provide the patient a list of these dietary instructions and if possible educative handouts and ask the
patient to repeat the instructions provided (Hinkle Cheever, 2014). The patient can also benefits form

The Importance Of Animals In Agony
Animals are pretty chill.
They do a lot for us too, dogs help police sniff out illegal drugs, sea lions are monitoring climate
change in the ocean and bees help grow our planet. Dogs have a sense of smell that is 1000 times
stronger than the average human.
Which is like woah.
With their strong sense of smell, detection dogs are used to help find drugs, contraband, blood, etc.
which helps the police keep us safe. Sea lions that are trained to monitor the ocean have sensors
attached to their fur and they go deep in the ocean and track water pressure and temperature. Bees are
pretty sweet as they provide us with honey, also they pollinate about ⅓ of what we eat and most plants
in our world which is kind of important too. So many animals like these help our environment and us
people.
There is one more important thing animals have done for us that has greatly affected our health, they
have participated in animal testing.
Animals in Agony?
Many people think animals that are being used to test drugs are abused and tortured therefore they
need to be saved.
First of all.
How do they know that? Are they there with the animals? Did an animal send them a secret message
telling them that they need to be saved? No. Contrary to what the vegans might believe, the
researchers testing these animals aren t evil people who are sadistic and enjoy torturing animals. They
actually care for the animals and are very humane to them.
When undergoing experiments that may bring pain, the

Psychosocial Theory And Erikson s Pychosocial Development...
Psychosocial Development Theory Erik Erikson postulated eight psychosocial stages, an innovation to
the five stages of development of Dr. Sigmund Freud. Each of the psychosocial stages are present at
birth but only begin to unfold according to the childrens ecological and cultural upbringing. Each
stage is marked by a psychosocial crisis that needs to be resolved so that the individual can move to
the next stage of development (Heffner, 2014). The developmental task for the preschoolers in this
theory is to achieve a sense of initiative and overcome sense of guilt. Erikson believed that children in
this stage begin to plan activitites, make up games, and initiative activities with others. In this theory,
parents and other care takers take ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Piaget believed that children are like little scientists and that they actively try to explore and make
sense of the world around them. He developed a stage theory of intellectual development that includes
four distinct stages: sensorimotor stage, preoperational stage, concrete operational stage and formal
operational stage. In his stages especially the second stage which is the preoperational, the child rises
above simple sensory experiences. Words can be used as symbolic representations of objects and
events. Children in the preoperational stage can be egocentric. They cannot distinguish between
themselves in the place of others. At this stage, the child does not seem to be capable of certain logical
operations and the child thinks that more things are alive than an older child or adult would. Further,
because the child is egocentric, there is a tendency to blame oneself for the event (Crain, 2011). With
this, Piaget believed that children learn through pretend play but still struggle with logic and taking the
point of view of other people (Cherry, 2016). Piaget theory and its concepts is applicable to this study
because thru this theory, the researcher was able to develop play activities which involves cognitive,
affective, and psychomotor to enchance the childrens potential and improve their

Ariana Grande s Music Video Analysis
Ariana Grande s new music video for One Last Time debuted earlier this week, and now the video is
facing scrutiny by the group SAFIA. The electronic group claims Grande s music video is a carbon
copy of their video You Are The One. Max Landis directed Grande s music video, which opens with
the singer arguing with another man inside of a car. The next scene shows Grande walking in the
streets as panicked people are shown running through the crowd. While all of this is taking place,
meteors fall down from purple skies. The video ends with Grande getting one last kiss, before the
planet is completely destroyed. SAFIA s video was directed by Jimmy Ennet, just like Grande s video,
it opens with an argument between a man and woman in a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The band members of SAFIA went on social media to express their anger towards Grande s record

either the people at Ariana Grande s label or the film maker have seen our clip for You Are The One

THE END!), the band wrote on Facebook. The band social media rant continued by SAFIA stating
this kind of theft is all too common. Wouldn t be the first time uncreative talentless f*cks from big
labels and/or big film firms steal ideas from small independents creatives who are trying really hard to
make something different for a change, SAFIA wrote on Facebook. The band s Facebook rant did not
go unnoticed, and they received multiple death threats on social media. Consequently, the band
retracted all of their statements and simply called the similarities between the two videos a
coincidence. They also said there was no way it could be proven that someone from Grande s camp
ever saw their music video. We re not after Ariana, Max, or their label either, we were simply voicing
our concerns in what is sometimes a common occurrence in the music industry, SAFIA

How Does The Painters Job Score On The Core Job...
1. How does the painters job score on the core job characteristics before and after the changes were
made? How can the positive impact of the job redesign be explained? Job core characteristics fall into
five categories, which, are as follows: skill variety, task identity task significance, autonomy, and job
feedback. Skill variety is how many different activities a job has. I would say before and after the
changes skill variety was low. Task identity is to the degree a job is completed. Basically it is how far
along a person takes a job from the beginning to the end of a process. For the painter s task identity, I
would say it was moderate before and after the changes. Task significance is how important the job is
to the company or society in general. For the painters I would say the before and after the changes task
significance was moderate. Autonomy is the amount of freedom and independence an employee has
over a particular job. Before the changes the painter had very low autonomy, nut after the changes I
would say it was high. Last is job feedback, which is how much information the employee receives on
how well they did their job. I would say job feedback was pretty high before and after the changes
were made. The positive impact of job redesign can be seen in autonomy redesign. Before the changes
the room was too hot and the hook speed was too fast. However, after the company let the employees
place fans where they want and control the hook speed the autonomy score

It s not just you. It really is getting harder to outpace the other guys. Our recent research finds that
since the middle of the 1990s, which marked the mainstream adoption of the internet and commercial
enterprise software, competition within the U.S. economy has accelerated to unprecedented levels.
There are a number of possible reasons for this quickening, including M A activity, the opening up of
global markets, and companies continuing R D efforts. However, we found that a central catalyst in
this shift is the massive increase in the power of IT investments. To better understand when and where
IT confers competitive advantage in today s economy, we studied all publicly traded U.S. companies

Compare And Contrast Superman And Batman
Comic books first appeared in the 18th century, but it was in the 1930 s when they became really
popular. The characters created conquered the hearts of many people at that time. DC Comics, a
publisher, released many stories that changed the cartoon world forever. The appearance of Superman
in 1938 began the era of superheroes and revolutionized the comic industry. This character was
followed by the equally successful Bat man in 1939 ( Comic book ). Superman and Bat man both
became known all over the world. The pair has greatly contributed to the American culture. Because
of their tremendous influence, from the very beginning, people have been wondering which one of
these powerhouses is better than another, and how dissimilar they really are. But actually, these
superheroes are as different as they are alike. Superman and Batman have contrasting backgrounds,

he sent villains to jail for years. Just as Superman, he restrained from killing people because he

Squanto Essay
Squanto
Squanto is a Native American who lived in the early seventeenth century in what is now the Northeast
United States. When the English came to this area of America to settle, they became very fond of
Squanto and used him as a translator due to his unique knowledge of the English language acquired
through an earlier voyage to Europe. Squanto helped the Pilgrims adapt to their new surroundings by
providing them with the knowledge that he and his ancestors used to survive when they first settled in
this area. He became known as a friend to the English and a spokesman for his Native friends
(Johnson p.2). However, in helping the English, Squanto realized the power he had obtained through
his position and used it for his own gain ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He also taught them how to fish and where the best spots were to catch enough to feed the colony.
These important tips were essential to the survival of the English. Squanto was also very helpful in
establishing peaceful relations between the colonists and Indians. In his first meeting with the
Plymouth colonists, Squanto was able to work out a peace treaty in order to keep either side from
hastily attacking the other (Johnson p.2). He also acted as an interpreter and a guide to help make the
English more comfortable around the indigenous people (). Without Squanto s help, the Pilgrims
would probably have had severe famine over the next year, and would have lived in constant fear of
their indian neighbors (Johnson p.2); the English could not have survived without the knowledge that
Squanto had given them.
However, the friendly side of Squanto is traditionally the only one taught to the American public, in
which he is portrayed as an extremely friendly Native American who devoted much of his time and
effort to helping the European settlers adapt to their newly acquired land. It is true that Squanto was a
great help to the English settlers, however many modern texts, articles, and essays concerning Squanto
neglect to include his betrayal of many Native American tribes in what is now Connecticut and Long
Island(Vine p. 201 ). Many elementary educated students are led to believe that Squanto simply saved
the newcomers from

Biological Theories of Manic-Depression Essay
Biological Theories of Manic Depression
Like every mental illness, there is no definitive evidence concerning the etiology of manic depression,
also known as bipolar disorder. The disorder is characterized by alternating periods of depression and
mania and occurs in 1% of the population. The depressive episodes can range in severity from
dysthymia to major depressive episodes. The major depressive episodes are classified as periods of at
least two weeks in length during which sadness, lethargy, insomnia or excessive sleep, increase or
decrease in appetite, hopelessness, and suicidal ideation or suicide attempts are present. Dysthymia is
the milder form of depression, during which suicidal ideation and attempts are not present. Manic ...

Many scientists have isolated single genes to which they believe manic depression can be attributed;
however, very few agree on which gene it is. Egeland (1987) announced that she and her colleagues
had found a gene that provided a strong diathesis toward manic depression on chromosome 11. Two
different groups of researchers (Detera Wadleigh et al., 1987 and Hodgkinson et al., 1987) found no
connection between the same gene and manic depression, which led to the theory that more than one
gene may be responsible for the disorder. At the same time, Baron et al. (1987) announced they had
found a genetic link between manic depression and a different gene. Both Baron and Egeland later
stated that their findings may be inconclusive ((1)). In 1993, Bredbecka et al. announced that the gene
for manic depression is on the X chromosome; the next year Berrettini et al. (1994) reported to have
found the gene that contributes to the disorder on chromosome 18 and Straub et al. (1994) reported it
to be on chromosome 21. McMahon et al. (1995) found evidence to suggest that manic depression was
more likely to be inherited from mothers than from fathers, proposing that the gene for the disorder
would be different in women and men. At the same time, Stine (1995) published a paper supporting
the theory that the gene for manic depression is on chromosome 18. Gershon s research found that

Symbolism And Symbolism In Kate Chopin s The Awakening
A key aspect in writing an interesting story is having symbolism. It allows the reader to dive just a
little bit deeper into the meaning and core of the work. Birds are a fairly common symbol, serving as
representations of freedom, breaking free, and not afraid to be loud or to speak their minds. In Kate
Chopin s novella, The Awakening, birds are used to show Edna s true feelings and desires, to explain
the courage required to defy the standards, and to show Edna s final defeat. Many animals, especially
birds, seem to communicate in a language that only they can really understand. The novella starts by
setting a scene with the description of two birds who do exactly that. Chopin begins by stating, A
green and yellow parrot, which hung in a cage outside the door, kept repeating over and over: Allez
vous en! Allez vous en! Sapristi! That s all right! He could speak a little Spanish, and also a language
which nobody understood, unless it was the mocking bird that hung on the other side of the door,
whistling his fluty notes out upon the breeze with maddening persistence (Chopin 1). The green and
yellow parrot represents Edna Pontellier. She feels as if she is stuck in a golden cage with only one
other being who understands her. She has always had food on her plate and her husband provides a
stable income and life for her. The mocking bird represents Mademoiselle Reisz, because she is the
only other being who understands what Edna, or the parrot, is feeling and wanting to

fact, a conglomeration of different groups with various aims. Sometimes these groups can be at odds

groups within NASA into two general categories: the Human Destiny camp with human spaceflight

Spaceflight has a difficulty holding public attention, but robotic spaceflight has a much more difficult

Explain Why Organisms Have Genes
The science of genetics can be hard to understand. Genetics is the study of what it sounds like: genes.
Many people find great difficulty in distinguishing the variations of the terms trait, gene, genotype,

Examples from the author will be used to ensure comprehension. This essay will even go as deep as to
explain why organisms have genes and why the genes vary. There are many terms used by geneticists.
The most simple is the word trait. Traits are characteristics that come from one s genes; they can be
inherited, meaning that they come from an organism s parents. Genes are much like blueprints for
what an organism will be. Genes can be either dominant or recessive (dominant genes overpower
recessive ones). Genotypes are, put as intelligibly as possible, the type of gene that one has for each
trait that he or she owns. An allele is a trait that an organism gains from one parent. One gets two
alleles for each phenotype (a physical trait). An organism is either homozygous dominant for a
phenotype (it has two of the same dominant alleles), ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A few examples of how they function inside of organisms are comprehensible, as well. For instance, T
stands for the phenotype tall. A lowercase t stands for the recessive allele of T. An organism that is
homozygous dominant for being tall would have the genotype TT. A female of this specimen comes
along. She is short with the homozygous recessive genotype of tt. Using a punnett square, a square
divided into four parts that can show what genotypes that a couple s children might have, it would be
easy to tell that the genotypes of four of their children could be: Tt, Tt, Tt, and tt. 75% of the children
would be heterozygous for being tall and the remainder would be homozygous recessive short. Genes
are quite easy to understand, if one can think outside of the punnett square (pun

Marijuana’S Historic Misrepresentation Defines The Reasons
Marijuana s historic misrepresentation defines the reasons behind its classification of this drug and
why most Americans stand where they do on this issue. However, marijuana being released from the
classification of a level 1 drug could definitely have a positive effect on our country. Lowering where
it stands on the DEA s drug classification schedule, would give marijuana the opportunity to become
federally legal and have an impact throughout our entire country, rather than only those few open
minded states. If marijuana wasn t misclassified its medicinal properties would finally be fully
explored, the people would be allowed to gain factual knowledge, prison and crime rate would drop,
and the taxation of marijuana would benefit our ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Flyers and posters were placed everywhere reading Marijuana a puff a party a tragedy! Assassin of
Youth(marijuana). All sharing one common goal: convincing the public of the abominable drug that
marijuana was being presumed to be. Then came the grand slam, the Reefer Madness film. The film s
main focus was how badly the teenage marijuana users were affected by the drug. These adolescents
became unexplainably violent and deranged. The film even showed an extremely irrational behaviors,
like suicide, because of how potent the high was. The movie was successfully advertised and pushed
to be seen. Quickly after, this falsified idea of marijuana spread across the US like wildfire and its
information was absorbed. Generation after generation carried on these false interpretations on
cannabis. All medical miracles and its obvious economical benefits were lost due to blind ignorance
and lack of knowledge.
Marijuana has falsely been said to be highly addictive. Tobacco and alcohol have proven to be far
more addictive than we are told. A comparative risk assessment using the margin of exposure(MOE)
approach was taken to demonstrate the risk factor of many different drugs. MOE tested a wide range
of substances: heroin, cocaine, cannabis, tobacco, and alcohol. In short, MOE: Specifically, the results
confirm that the risk of cannabis may have been overestimated in the past. The four main substances

The Deformed Creature In Mary Shelley s Frankenstein
Frankenstein is a romantic novel written by Mary Shelley in 1831. It is the story of a crazy scientist
named Doctor Frankenstein who wants to play scientists and who dares to give life to a creature made
of a pile of recovered human flesh on corpses. In this perspective of modernity, the couple creative /
creature tells us the adventures of a monster not quite monstrous as its look on the world and humanity
from the outside. The result is the deconstruction of myths, the emotions of scientific research and
concerns about a science with boundaries rejected that seems out of control. By raising various
questions about the origins of thought, the development of consciousness, the monster makes us
identify the values and counter values structuring ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Resuming the emerging questions about the ethical limits of scientific research. This relationship,
which binds creature to creator, makes the monster a metaphor for modern man, whose life is tended
towards disgust and solitude leaving him without a reason to live. The destructive will of the creature
being due to the rejection expressed by Frankenstein, lets us suppose that the evil has its origin in the
exclusion of man. We see through Mary Shelley s novel that the deformed creature, contrary to
legitimate expectations, is endowed with a very high rationality, to such an extent that it even succeeds
in convincing its own creator on many subjects. We can thus see the presence of a self determined and
independent will which needs to be framed and standardized in order to allow life in society. The
presence of will and rationality also proves the entirely human character of the monster . The latter
has, in fact, all the characteristics of a human being, but more intense: he hates, loves, reasons, has
will, is resentful, and so on. To this extent, it is a form of superman and not a monster. He even
presents emotions and regrets. From

The Rat Model Of Depression
In the present study, the rat model of depression was induced by the daily i.p. injection of reserpine for
15 days. This was followed by monitoring the motor activity to check the development of the rat
model of depression. Then the depressed rats were treated with cannabis extract to study its effect on
this model.
After 15 days of daily reserpine injection, a significant decrease in motor activity was recorded as
assessed by the open field test (OFT). Together with the hunched back appearance that was observed
after 15 days, these behavioral changes indicate the development of rat model of depression which
was maintained by the daily i.p. injection for another 15 days.
After 30 days of daily reserpine injections, the significant changes in the OFT parameters and hunched
back appearance persisted and were similar to those observed after 15 days of reserpine treatment. In
addition to the motor deficits, the present depletion in cortical and hippocampal monoamine levels
induced by reserpine confirms the development of the rat model of depression, since the central
depletion in 5 HT, NE and/or DA have been postulated as the main cause for the pathogenesis of
depression (Schechter et al., 2005)
Our results were consistent with the study of Antkiewicz Michaluk et al. (2014) who found a distinct
depressive like behavior in the forced swimming test, motor impairment, and reduced levels of
dopamine, noreepinephrine, and serotonin in the brain after treatment with a low dose of

Analysis Of The Movie Greasy Lake
Most people know the movie Ferris Bueller s Day Off, the personification of teen rebellion and
independence. It illustrates the free spirit disobedience that lies in the hearts of teenagers. In T.
Coraghessan Boyle s Greasy Lake and Anne Tyler s Teenage Wasteland, the reader is given a glimpse
of the turbulent times encompassed during teenage years, including the questioning of authority.
Through the authors style of writing, the theme of both stories are almost identical; the reader can
conclude that both authors have diverse tactics in the way they tell the stories. Both characters in each
story go through teen rebellion but have different perspectives on how to approach these issues. In
order to show the different approaches that each story illustrates, both authors demonstrate initiation
stories. In Greasy Lake the narrator experiences rebellious behavior because he believes that being bad
is cool. However, by the end of the story, the reader can identify that the narrator went through some
sort of transformation. In the beginning, the narrator worries about his image of being bad because he
believes that his peers will think differently of him. The story clearly demonstrates that the narrator s
focus is on being cool, There was a time when courtesy and winning ways went out of style, when it
was good to be bad, when you cultivated decadence like a taste. We were nineteen. We were bad. We

a prominent feature of the brass bands of today. Leading with E flat horns is a prominent extraordinary
feature of the early American brass bands. Creating a homogeneous mellow sound by mixing the

Role Of The Media During The Vietnam War
Tan Oguz Instructor: Arjun Subrahmanyan HIST 386C 11 December 2014 Final Paper Role of the
Media in the Vietnam War Vietnam War is a war that mainly differentiates from any other war in the
history of the modern warfare due to the fact that the first time in history the media was able to act
without restrictions and had the opportunity to film and record the war from the frontline of the
combat zone. Besides the political and military decisions taken at the wartime, media had a impact on
changing destiny of the war. In this essay, in order to show the impact of the media on the war, I will
try to examine some of the key events of the Vietnam War, such as the Tet Offensive, and My Lai
Massacre. Were there any misconceptions presented by the media about the war? Was media
responsible of the US loss in Vietnam? Is the power of media exaggerated at the time of the war?
Throughout the essay, these questions will try to be answered in the contexts of specific events. Before
the insertion of ground troops in Vietnam, much of the concern in the media had been favoured to the
political tactics of reinforcing a non communist (democratic) government in South Vietnam. After the
war changed its direction to heavy ground batlle, a change in coverage also eventuated that the media
were more concerned and interested in military conjuncture (Wyatt 1995). By becoming more
interested in military aspects of the war, the media became more engaged in actual fight scenes and
brutality of the

Ragtime Music Research Paper
In the late nineteenth century, African American musicians introduced this syncopated, up tempo
music with a steady beat to small, unpopular venues; this style of piano music was called ragtime
because of the how ragged their arrangements were. Ragtime was like marches and it has a European
harmony with African rhythm. This style of music became known as it was used for actors to do their
cakewalk, which is a high stepping dance, at the end of the minstrel shows. An African American,
Scott Joplin was named the King of Ragtime . After World War I, ragtime music was overshadowed
by the Tin Pan Alley, which was a street of publishing house with pianos playing simultaneously
(Ferris, 2014). Though, ragtime was pushed out by Tin Pan Alley,

Whaling Should Be Banned
Aside from radical protests against whaling, other NGOs such as Greenpeace have peacefully
protested the ongoing whaling, by avoiding fleet wars the SSCS partakes in. By 1973, Greenpeace
confronted whaling fleets in response to the decline of blue whales and other species. In the midst of a
peaceful battle to defend the whales, Greenpeace snapped a photograph of a dead sperm whale,
burdening the public to the IWC in requests for justice. Responding to the incident in 1979, the IWC
established the Indian Ocean Whale Sanctuary as a conservation measure, and in 1982 the IWC
declared a Global Moratorium. The desire of the IWC to conserve their image of anti whalers driven
them to act immediately from the accusations over Japan. The establishment of the moratorium was a
plan to cease commercial whaling in 1986 and in 2003 to allow for the ... Show more content on

Countries such as Norway, Iceland and Japan declared an objection to the moratorium (1982). By
declaring an objection to the moratorium the countries are allowed to practice commercial whaling
under their own regulation, while abiding to the rules of the International Convention established by
the IWC (IWC). However, in the midst of the objection, Greenpeace activists came across one of the
first provable cases of corruption that highlighted Japan as a suspect. In 2010 two of Greenpeace s
activists known as The Tokyo Two exposed Japan s scientific whaling program by uncovering a whale
meat scandal.
The Tokyo Two gentlemen uncovered one of the most controversial scandals in the history of whaling
commercial whaling. While the JWA s Object statement reads: We are concerned with people having
the wrong perception of whaling , lack of credibility grew once the The Tokyo Two busted their
corruption. In 2008 the two of Greenpeace campaigners from Japan exposed corruption in the whaling
industry. According to Greenpeace, prime cuts of whale

Rhetorical Analysis Of Is Google Making Us Stupid Major Paper II:Rhetorical Analysis In the article, Is Google Making Us Stupid , the main argument the author, Nicholas Carr is trying to make is to explain how the Internet becomes our only source of information. Carr is also trying to warn oncoming generations in how the Internet has affected our ability to read long pieces or to be able to retain information for a long period of time. Carr provides personal experience, imagery, and a professional analysis that is backed by research to hook the audience in and persuade them that in today s society, the Internet is only causing problems rather than any solutions.Throughout the article Carr provides an abundant amount of rhetorical modes by giving examples and studies from different organizations . Carr gives an insight on the positive ways the Internet had influenced his life. The author s tone changes in paragraph 4 when Carr talks about how the Internet has altered his mind by crumbling away at how much he can concrete. When Carr states For me, as for others, the Net is becoming a universal medium in paragraph four the author provides his counter argument which is to warn the incoming generations the dangers of the Internet before his main argument. Which is that the Internet is making us stupid and is altering how we think, by doing this it allows Carr to spend the rest of the article refuting his main argument. • 5. Gender and Sport Socialization Essay Gender and Sport Socialization Socialization is a life long process whereby the individual learns the appropriate roles and norms of behaviour within a particular society. From birth, children are socialised into sex linked roles; in many instances males are expected to behave in a masculine way and are encouraged to be involved in activities, such as sport, that are traditionally regarded as male. Women however are usually expected to behave in a feminine manner; a vast contrast to the encouragement of males to be strong, powerful, forceful and aggressive. This is reflected in women s participation in sport, and more importantly, their coverage in the print media, which is minimal in comparison to their male counterparts. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The media s linking of the skill of key sports with maleness and the constant exposure of the public to this process, has the effect of inferiorising femaleness and female activities. By implication, it seems that women cannot do certain skilful things that the media value highly. (Williams, Louise. Silent Armies Storm the Last Male Bastion . The Weekend Australia, February 16 17, 1985). Such examples include ...powerful tackles...impressive slam dunk... (The Age, 24/2/2001) which are viewed as predominately male skills, and an attribute women cannot compete with. Notions of femininity influence views about how girls should be. This can create conflict for girls who participate in sports that require unfeminine behaviour and produce unfeminine bodyshapes . Women are depicted in the media in ways that reinforce the prevailing community attitudes and stereotypes about them. They are not viewed as strong, heroic figures to be idolised on the basis of their talent and sporting achievements. Rather in many cases, women s coverage is on the basis of sporting fashion . A classic example of this being the extensive coverage of women s fashion in the Australian Open tennis tournament recently held in Melbourne; Anna Kournicova becoming a symbol for women s tennis due to her ... Like every department in a company, Human resource management needs to modify frequently during time to adapt to the continuous changes in external environment. Model explanation: Figure 1 Atkinson model workforce flexibility To reflect the workforce flexibility, Atkinson (1894) came up with the model which also comprises ways in which flexibility can be shown. Flexibility can be seen on part time jobs. This is applied for many employees being students at school in both Vietnam and other countries. This kind of employee need time for studying and still consider them to be able to contribute to labor force for extra money. Part time job is one of the choices when employers only have to spend fewer hours compared to full time jobs of working (Dutta, n.d). Job sharing is basically a form of part time work that provides staff with the equivalent of one full time employee while giving the job sharing employees the ability to keep their careers on track while allowing more time for family responsibilities or other activities (Entrepreneur, n.d). This is obvious in Darcy s second proposal to Elizabeth even though his speech does not contain a question mark, but it implicates a question. Darcy says, You are too generous to trifle with me. If your feelings are still what they were last April, tell me so at once. My affections and wishes are unchanged, but one word from you will silence me on this subject for ever (458). His speech indicates that he waits for Elizabeth s answer. Similarly, in Emma, Mr. Knightley, as Darcy, asks Emma a genuine question if she accepts his offer or not by saying, Tell me, then, have I no chance of ever succeeding?.... As mentioned earlier, women with no fortune have no rights to get married to men from the upper class. For the same reason, in Emma, Mr. Frank Churchill engages secretly to Jane Fairfax because he depends on his aunt s money, Mrs. Churchill. His aunt may refuse to approve his engagement to Jane because Jane is a governess and belongs to a low social class, so it is difficult for Frank to reveal his engagement. As I grew older, I began to make my own decisions and I continued to find value in the books I chose: the magic treehouse, Eleven, How The García Girls Lost Their Accents. Because I don t always get to choose the books I read, it is unusual that I find value in books assigned to me; however, a recent required book, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, supplied me with many Value buds. In Arthur Miller s The Crucible, Reverend John Hale is made to be a complicated character. In the beginning, he is extremely confident, intelligent, and is a man that seems to want to get the job he is assigned to do done. Towards the middle of the play, that confidence begins to decline because of certain mishaps. The exclamation point Arthur Miller uses at the end of Hale s line shows Hale s seriousness. Nevertheless, Reverend hale does end up coming back to Salem. However, his incentive is much different than the incentive he first had when he first came to Salem. He is there to try to get the innocent to lie to save themselves by confessing as shown when Hale tells Elizabeth to plead with [Proctor] (Miller 208) to confess. Although the putsches were too weak and disorganized to seize power in the earlier years of Weimar it is significant that the putsches happened at all thus highlighting the looming threat of the extreme right. The left wing, although a potential for disaster and threat, was not as great a threat as the right to Weimar. The KPD can be seen as a reasonable political force in the years of 1919 23 as it enjoyed support of 10 15% of the electorate a there were continuous revolutionary disturbances. However, the endless protests, strikes and uprisings by the extreme left gave the impression of a Bolshevik inspired threat to Germany. Whereas the opposition of the left, army, the police and friekorps easily crushed rebellions; removing the strong leadership of Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg. Thus due to propaganda as a result of right wing parties, Germans began to have exaggerated fears about the possibility of impending revolution. Revolution in Germany was a central element of Lenin s foreign policy and the people were also aware that the soviet red army had caused revolution in Poland. • 12. Objectives Of A Balanced Scorecard Introduction The balanced scorecard consists of four critical performance measures that managers can use to align their company s initiatives with organizational strategy. It is one of the most important developments in management accounting, particularly in strategic planning and control because it offers a balanced view of how non financial and financial measures can be casually linked together (Shutibhinyo, 2014). The purpose of this research paper is to provide a brief history of the balanced scorecard, the components of a balanced scorecard, and finally an in depth comparative analysis of how two companies use the balanced scorecard to meet its strategic objectives. Origins of the Balanced Scorecard Robert S. Kaplan and David P. Norton developed the first balanced scorecard in the early 1990s. Kaplan and Norton identify the balanced scorecard as translating an organization s mission and strategy into a comprehensive set of performance measures that provides the framework for a strategic measurement and management system (Kaplan and Norton, 1996). The balanced scorecard is a tool in which managers can focus attention on four critical performance measures: financial perspective, customer perspective, process perspective, and learning and growth perspective (Kaplan and Norton, 1996). However, the first balanced scorecard that was published did not demonstrate to managers how the four strategic objectives fit to form the company s overall strategy. In other ... • 14. Revision Of The Writing Process A Study on Revision In The Writing Process Typically, when most people think about the writing process they think of terms such as a thesis statement, developing an outline, body paragraphs, conclusion; it s imperative to view writing this way. We have only been taught THIS way of writing almost directly after we learned how to spell words you decide what to write about, usually specified in the thesis statement, then you write a series of paragraphs entailing how you came to this conclusion. Finally, you conclude your paper by restating exactly what it was you spent an entire essay writing about. And most people will go their entire lives believing that is the formula for an effective, well thought out work of literature. But how often do we go back and read through our writing and completely resent how amateur and forced it sounds? This is usually a direct result of a lack of revision within a work. Defined by the Merriam Webster dictionary as a change or a set of changes that corrects or improves something and a new version of something that has been corrected or changed, Revision is not a common word we think of when writing this raises a serious question: how should you revise? • 15. Mating Selection Research Paper Procreation and mating selection are linked to the primal desire of survival and genetic continuity. The means of creating successful offspring are often paved through distinctive selection, which are often tailored to specific genetic traits that one or more partners possess. These concepts are a biological component that drives humans to reproduce with specific individuals. Since humans are unable to procreate by asexual means, the selection of a mate and their genetic information are highly important in concepts of reproduction. Males and females alike are psychologically and physically wired to make mating choice based on concepts of physical presentation and characteristics. These components often link together couples for mating purposes, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This has always been a present factor due to its capability to foresee danger, such as a fire or unpleasant smell. Since humans tend to avoid disturbing smells to survive, this biological mechanism has also been shown to translate with human selection. This biological component is tailored to pheromones, or chemicals that the body produces. These pheromones are used to attract the attention of a mate. An article titled Human Pheromones: The Science Behind the Scent of Attraction states that pheromones signal reproductive quality when excreted by various regions such as skin, sweat glands and urine and furthermore only about 10 percent of men give off a specific pheromone androsterone which is the so called sex appeal ( Human Pheromones ) Humans produce sweat in places that produce a lot of hair. While this mechanism is used to keep the body from over heating, the sweat also comes into contact with the hair in each area. Sweat and the hair produce a specific scent that others around you may pick up on, and depending on the individual, this scent may be pleasant or fowl. Woman tend to prefer a musky scent where men prefer a lighter scent. Each individual scent is tailored to a specific person, and generally the mate will find this smell pleasant and enjoy the biological components their partner creates. After hearing over tea with Norman about his relationship with his mother, Marion retreats to her room where she has a shower before bed. Later, when a private investigator goes looking for Marion, he is also horrifically murdered by the mother and only when Marion s sister, Leila, accompanied by Marion s lover, Sam, comes looking for her do we discover that the mother is actually Norman. He had been dressing up as his mother since killing her, along with her second husband, many years earlier. The Parlour Scene ================= A key scene in Psycho is the parlour scene. Nothing horrible happens in this scene but it provides the audience with clues that something is not quite right. • 17. Developmental Stages And Theories From Birth From Adolescence Developmental Stages and Theories from Birth to Adolescence Neurological Development According to the Urban Child Institute, the first three years of development are a crucial time for brain development. The human nervous system starts to develop at around day eighteen after conception (Carlson, 2014, p. 55). The brain stem is vital to instinctive functions, such as reflexes, breathing, and heart rate (Urban Child Institute , 2016). These are functions in the body that just happen without thinking about doing anything. The cerebrum is a large portion of the brain, which connects the cerebellum to the brain stem (Urban Child Institute , 2016). This part of the brain is where complex processes like memory and learning take place. The exterior of the cerebrum is the cerebral cortex, this part is not fully developed until adulthood and this is where sophisticated activities, such as planning and decision making are taking place (Urban Child Institute , 2016). The brain is also broken into four smaller pieces called lobes, they are the occipital lobe, parietal lobe, temporal lobe, and frontal lobe. The occipital lobe is in the back of the brain and is in charge of vision. The parietal lobe is related to bodily sensations such as your body temperature, pressure and pain (Urban Child Institute , 2016). The temporal lobe is intricate to hearing, language skills, social understanding, and observations of people s eyes and faces (Urban Child Institute , 2016). The frontal lobe is ... Psychosocial Development Theory Erik Erikson postulated eight psychosocial stages, an innovation to the five stages of development of Dr. Sigmund Freud. Each of the psychosocial stages are present at birth but only begin to unfold according to the childrens ecological and cultural upbringing. Each stage is marked by a psychosocial crisis that needs to be resolved so that the individual can move to the next stage of development (Heffner, 2014). The developmental task for the preschoolers in this theory is to achieve a sense of initiative and overcome sense of guilt. He developed a stage theory of intellectual development that includes four distinct stages: sensorimotor stage, preoperational stage, concrete operational stage and formal operational stage. In his stages especially the second stage which is the preoperational, the child rises above simple sensory experiences. Words can be used as symbolic representations of objects and events. Children in the preoperational stage can be egocentric. They cannot distinguish between themselves in the place of others. At this stage, the child does not seem to be capable of certain logical operations and the child thinks that more things are alive than an older child or adult would. Further, because the child is egocentric, there is a tendency to blame oneself for the event (Crain, 2011). With this, Piaget believed that children learn through pretend play but still struggle with logic and taking the point of view of other people (Cherry, 2016). How can the positive impact of the job redesign be explained? Job core characteristics fall into five categories, which, are as follows: skill variety, task identity task significance, autonomy, and job feedback. Skill variety is how many different activities a job has. I would say before and after the changes skill variety was low. Task identity is to the degree a job is completed. Basically it is how far along a person takes a job from the beginning to the end of a process. For the painter s task identity, I would say it was moderate before and after the changes. Task significance is how important the job is to the company or society in general. For the painters I would say the before and after the changes task significance was moderate. Autonomy is the amount of freedom and independence an employee has over a particular job. Before the changes the painter had very low autonomy, nut after the changes I would say it was high. Last is job feedback, which is how much information the employee receives on how well they did their job. I would say job feedback was pretty high before and after the changes were made. The positive impact of job redesign can be seen in autonomy redesign. Before the changes the room was too hot and the hook speed was too fast. However, after the company let the employees place fans where they want and control the hook speed the autonomy score ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Many scientists have isolated single genes to which they believe manic depression can be attributed; however, very few agree on which gene it is. Egeland (1987) announced that she and her colleagues had found a gene that provided a strong diathesis toward manic depression on chromosome 11. Two different groups of researchers (Detera Wadleigh et al., 1987 and Hodgkinson et al., 1987) found no connection between the same gene and manic depression, which led to the theory that more than one gene may be responsible for the disorder. At the same time, Baron et al. (1987) announced they had found a genetic link between manic depression and a different gene. Both Baron and Egeland later stated that their findings may be inconclusive ((1)). In 1993, Bredbecka et al. announced that the gene for manic depression is on the X chromosome; the next year Berrettini et al. (1994) reported to have found the gene that contributes to the disorder on chromosome 18 and Straub et al. (1994) reported it to be on chromosome 21. McMahon et al. • 39. Symbolism And Symbolism In Kate Chopin s The Awakening A key aspect in writing an interesting story is having symbolism. It allows the reader to dive just a little bit deeper into the meaning and core of the work. Birds are a fairly common symbol, serving as representations of freedom, breaking free, and not afraid to be loud or to speak their minds. In Kate Chopin s novella, The Awakening, birds are used to show Edna s true feelings and desires, to explain the courage required to defy the standards, and to show Edna s final defeat. Many animals, especially birds, seem to communicate in a language that only they can really understand. The novella starts by setting a scene with the description of two birds who do exactly that. Chopin begins by stating, A green and yellow parrot, which hung in a cage outside the door, kept repeating over and over: Allez vous en! Allez vous en! Sapristi! That s all right! He could speak a little Spanish, and also a language which nobody understood, unless it was the mocking bird that hung on the other side of the door, whistling his fluty notes out upon the breeze with maddening persistence (Chopin 1). The green and yellow parrot represents Edna Pontellier. She feels as if she is stuck in a golden cage with only one other being who understands her. She has always had food on her plate and her husband provides a stable income and life for her. The mocking bird represents Mademoiselle Reisz, because she is the only other being who understands what Edna, or the parrot, is feeling and wanting to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 41. Explain Why Organisms Have Genes The science of genetics can be hard to understand. Genetics is the study of what it sounds like: genes. Many people find great difficulty in distinguishing the variations of the terms trait, gene, genotype, and phenotype. These disconcerting words will all be explained meticulously throughout this paper. Examples from the author will be used to ensure comprehension. This essay will even go as deep as to explain why organisms have genes and why the genes vary. There are many terms used by geneticists. The most simple is the word trait. Traits are characteristics that come from one s genes; they can be inherited, meaning that they come from an organism s parents. Genes are much like blueprints for what an organism will be. Genes can be either dominant or recessive (dominant genes overpower recessive ones). Genotypes are, put as intelligibly as possible, the type of gene that one has for each trait that he or she owns. An allele is a trait that an organism gains from one parent. One gets two alleles for each phenotype (a physical trait). An organism is either homozygous dominant for a phenotype (it has two of the same dominant alleles), ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A few examples of how they function inside of organisms are comprehensible, as well. For instance, T stands for the phenotype tall. A lowercase t stands for the recessive allele of T. An organism that is homozygous dominant for being tall would have the genotype TT. A female of this specimen comes along. She is short with the homozygous recessive genotype of tt. Using a punnett square, a square divided into four parts that can show what genotypes that a couple s children might have, it would be easy to tell that the genotypes of four of their children could be: Tt, Tt, Tt, and tt. 75% of the children would be heterozygous for being tall and the remainder would be homozygous recessive short. Genes are quite easy to understand, if one can think outside of the punnett square (pun ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

We see through Mary Shelley s novel that the deformed creature, contrary to legitimate expectations, is endowed with a very high rationality, to such an extent that it even succeeds in convincing its own creator on many subjects. We can thus see the presence of a self determined and independent will which needs to be framed and standardized in order to allow life in society. • 44. The Rat Model Of Depression In the present study, the rat model of depression was induced by the daily i.p. injection of reserpine for 15 days. This was followed by monitoring the motor activity to check the development of the rat model of depression. Then the depressed rats were treated with cannabis extract to study its effect on this model. After 15 days of daily reserpine injection, a significant decrease in motor activity was recorded as assessed by the open field test (OFT). Together with the hunched back appearance that was observed after 15 days, these behavioral changes indicate the development of rat model of depression which was maintained by the daily i.p. injection for another 15 days. After 30 days of daily reserpine injections, the significant changes in the OFT parameters and hunched back appearance persisted and were similar to those observed after 15 days of reserpine treatment. In addition to the motor deficits, the present depletion in cortical and hippocampal monoamine levels induced by reserpine confirms the development of the rat model of depression, since the central depletion in 5 HT, NE and/or DA have been postulated as the main cause for the pathogenesis of depression (Schechter et al., 2005) Our results were consistent with the study of Antkiewicz Michaluk et al. It illustrates the free spirit disobedience that lies in the hearts of teenagers. In T. Coraghessan Boyle s Greasy Lake and Anne Tyler s Teenage Wasteland, the reader is given a glimpse of the turbulent times encompassed during teenage years, including the questioning of authority. Through the authors style of writing, the theme of both stories are almost identical; the reader can conclude that both authors have diverse tactics in the way they tell the stories. Both characters in each story go through teen rebellion but have different perspectives on how to approach these issues. In order to show the different approaches that each story illustrates, both authors demonstrate initiation stories. In Greasy Lake the narrator experiences rebellious behavior because he believes that being bad is cool. However, by the end of the story, the reader can identify that the narrator went through some sort of transformation. In the beginning, the narrator worries about his image of being bad because he believes that his peers will think differently of him. The story clearly demonstrates that the narrator s focus is on being cool, There was a time when courtesy and winning ways went out of style, when it was good to be bad, when you cultivated decadence like a taste. Role Of The Media During The Vietnam War Tan Oguz Instructor: Arjun Subrahmanyan HIST 386C 11 December 2014 Final Paper Role of the Media in the Vietnam War Vietnam War is a war that mainly differentiates from any other war in the history of the modern warfare due to the fact that the first time in history the media was able to act without restrictions and had the opportunity to film and record the war from the frontline of the combat zone. Besides the political and military decisions taken at the wartime, media had a impact on changing destiny of the war. In this essay, in order to show the impact of the media on the war, I will try to examine some of the key events of the Vietnam War, such as the Tet Offensive, and My Lai Massacre. Were there any misconceptions presented by the media about the war? Was media responsible of the US loss in Vietnam? Is the power of media exaggerated at the time of the war? Throughout the essay, these questions will try to be answered in the contexts of specific events. Before the insertion of ground troops in Vietnam, much of the concern in the media had been favoured to the political tactics of reinforcing a non communist (democratic) government in South Vietnam. After the war changed its direction to heavy ground batlle, a change in coverage also eventuated that the media were more concerned and interested in military conjuncture (Wyatt 1995). By becoming more interested in military aspects of the war, the media became more engaged in actual fight scenes and brutality of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
