Empress Dowager Cixi Research Paper
Our example being The Empress Dowager Cixi. It is true that the roles of royal and non royals
are different but one can pretty much guess how it was for the non royal women them having to
care for the children clean the house attend to the males also being considered second to the men
of the house hold. Nevertheless, we get to see what it was like for The Empress Dowager Cixi and
understand the roles she undertook. So In the East Asian History Sourcebook:

Impact Of Social Darwinism On Society
The real source of Social Darwinism is Herbert Spencer an English sociologist who took Darwin
s theory and applied it to how societies change and evolve over time. As a sociologist, he did not
feel the need to improve society, for he felt that societies were bound to change own its own. He
took the theory of evolutionone step beyond biology and applied it to say that societies were
organisms that progress through changes similar to that of a living species. It was his philosophy
that societies would begin simple and then progress to a more complex form. He also found
similarities between animal organisms and societies in that both had three main systems. The first
system is the regulative system for animals that would be the central nervous system in societies it
would be government... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He also created the phrase survival of the fittest due to the fact that he believed human behavior
was designed in a way that strives for self preservation. The theory of social Darwinism created the
thinking of the survival of the fittest as that the strongest and the fittest should survive and be on
top in society, and the weak should be allowed to die out. This allowed him to believe that the
rich and powerful became so because they were better suited to the social and economic climate
of the time. He believed it was natural or normal that the strong survived at the cost of the weak.
He is also perhaps best known for coining the term survival of the fittest, elaborating what came to
be known as the philosophy of social Darwinism. But, popular belief to the contrary, he did not
merely appropriate and generalize Darwin s work on natural selection; he only incorporated Darwin
s theory of natural selection into his preexisting synthetic philosophical

Ethical Sourcing And The Supply Chain
Ethical Sourcing and the Supply Chain Growing competition and the ever increasing emphasis on
cost reduction and efficiency has caused many firms to outsource various components of their
operations outside of the country. As firms are thrusted into the global marketplace and transformed
into multinational corporations (MNCs), new challenges arise related to the differences/disparity in
corporate social responsibility(CSR) practices between countries (Chandler Werther Jr., 2014; Cruz,
2013). Globalizationhas increased companies need to consider the importance and strategic value of
CSR (Chandler Werther Jr., 2014; Cruz, 2013).
At the forefront of international CSR issues, is the consumer demand for ethically managed supply
chains. Cruz (2013) stated that poor CSR performance, at any stage of the supply chain process,
may damage a company s most important asset its reputation (p. 3995). Based upon a case study on
the outsourcing of production activities by Apple Inc. to the controversial contract manufacturer
Foxconn, this paper will discuss whether or not firms have responsibility for the supply chains they
choose to utilize. The paper will also highlight some of the advantages and disadvantages of Apple
s outsourcing decision, along with cost benefit analysis of such decision.
Supply Chain Responsibility As companies increase their global presence through the outsourcing
of manufacturing activities, the question of Who is responsible for ensuring the supply

Abraham Lincoln s Boyhood Home From The Age Of 7
Indiana, Abraham Lincoln s boyhood home from the age of 7 to 21, has memorialized our 16th
president with two statues in its capital city of Indianapolis. Both statues were controversial from
the beginning whether because of the amount of money it would take to pay for them or their
placement. The first statue was erected in 1934 and simply entitled Abraham Lincoln. This statue
was funded by a trust fund established by Henry C. Long, a wealthy lumberman to be used after
his wife s death, the trust fund was said to have $10,000 $25,000 in it. Long s stipulation was that
with this money a statue honoring Lincoln would be built in the southeast corner of University
Park. Architects of the park were hesitant to include the statue because it would spoil the artistic
symmetry of the park. Finally, the Judge Smiley N. Chambers ordered the statue to be put up and
granted the city access to the fund that housed the $16,800 it would cost to build the statue. The
man who was commissioned to sculpt the statue was Henry Hering of New York. Henry had done
some statuary work previously in the memorial shrine in the park. His work upon the memorial is
entitled Pro Patria, and when it was erected in 1929 it was the largest bronze cast in the United
States. Hering had studied and worked with Augustus Saint Gaudens another prominent sculptor at
the time. The statue was unveiled during the Army day program in 1935. The program was
expected to attract thousands to see the nation s

The Use of Performance Enhancing Drugs in Sports Today
Performance enhancers are very prominent in professional sports today. A lot of players are
facing suspensions and other penalties for using them. The sport that gets scrutinized the most for
this is Baseball. Many former users in the MLB (or formally the NABBP) have come out saying
that they were using these drugs while playing. Some of these players are Jorge Sosa, Antonio
Bastardo, and the famous Alex Rodriguez. Although these drugs have been prohibited, players are
still finding ways around the tests which is why in some other countries they are legal so that no
one player can have an unfair advantage. There have been many arguments and disputes about the
origin of the sport known as baseball. This has led many people to wonder where America s
favorite pastime came from. Some people believe that the sport has taken shape from a primeval
community game called rounders. Other historical sources remark that Thomas Wilson
condemned this game and a few other sports. In England he was considered a conformist leader.
These speculations have led to curiosity to the game of stool ball. In this game, the batter would
stand in front of a stool while a different person pitched him the ball. If the batter s ball was caught
in the field he would be out. Also, if the ball hit the stool that was behind the batter, he would again
be out. (http://www.historyofbaseball.us/)

James P. McQuiston
Abstract
The Nano Brewery is a very small business that has been operating for two years. The two owners
have found that demand for their product has outstripped their ability to supply it. They are
considering expanding their company to meet this demand. We will analyze their financial
performance and evaluate broader environmental factors before providing a recommendation on
company expansion.

Debt ratio= 0.616
This indicates that nearly 62% of the brewery s assets are currently financed by debt. This is
relatively high, but should not be viewed in isolation.
Debt to Equity Ratio
The debt to equity ratio demonstrates how the brewery is financed (outside creditors vs
shareholders.) Debt to Equity ratio= Total liabilities/ shareholder equity

Still I Rise By Maya Angelou And Where Is The Love, By The...
Do you ever feel that you are out of place, like a standout in a busy crowd? This is how it feels to
be discriminated against due to the colour of your skin. For more than 500 years, coloured people
have faced the threat of intrusion and violence; they have been used, abused and discriminated
against due to the colour of their skin, their religion or where they come from. In the 21st century
racismis still roaming the airs and it is still a common threat; there are currently laws in place to
reduce the violence that it brings but still we show ignorance. There have been many poems and
songs created to portray this issue; these include still I rise by the famous peace protestor Maya
Angelou and Where is the love by the world known band the Black Eyed Peas. Both of these
pieces identify the pressing issues of racism and discriminationthat face our society every single day.
Still I Rise is a poem written by Maya Angelou. Through this poem, Angelou has used third person
which allows the audience to relate to the social issue that she is introducing. Maya Angelou
structured this poem in a certain way to be able to portray how much this issue meant to her
emotionally and historically. The aim of this poem is to make audiences throughout the whole
world aware of racism and discrimination. Maya wrote this piece to show that no matter how many
times white people discriminate against blacks that they will always find the positives in everything
while staying strong and

Family And Heroin Analysis
When it comes to this topic I am not that knowledgeable on heroin. My family and I haven t went
through something significant like using heroin or any kind of drugs like that. What I do know
this reminds me of when last semester we had a panel on Heroin at our University in the MPR
room. When I was there I listen and heard how can destroy a family. A cop had a son who was
using heroin, and he tried to help him as best as he can. The son later on in the story went to rehab
to get clean, and he was successful in doing that. The son was also at the panel with is father the
cop as a surprise ending. So from what I know is Edinboro, and Erie are taking steps to address
heroin going out making it known. Telling people heroin is back with a force.

The Inconvenience Of Reading In Charles Foster Kane s...
The Inconvenience of Reading
Young children are egocentric, unable to understand the world around them from a perspective
other than their own. Yet due to neural plasticity, they rapidly develop agglutinative schemas,
categories of knowledge that shape how they understand and respond to the world. As time passes,
their horizons expand and solidify. Now adults, they read the world as we all do: through contextual
mediums and filters. While the relationship between the reader and the world is multiplex, reading
is an essential means by which one constructs and derives meaning.
Since we read the world through mediums, mass media is one of the most potent institutions. It
cultivates societal and cultural norms, serving as an educator and entertainer. The media builds
narratives, framing real life events to fulfill their agendas. In Citizen Kane, publishing tycoon
Charles Foster Kane capitalizes on the power of modern mass media. He uses the New York
Inquirer to lead his yellow journalism crusade. The sensationalist narratives he directs lead the
newspaper s readers to view Cuban independence via a war with Spain as a necessity.
Kane is not alone. A number of governments frame the news to control how their citizens read the
world. Propaganda films and firewalls alike allow the state to manufacture its own narrative in the
context of global affairs. In democratic nations alike, yellow journalism tactics have mutated to
adapt to today s media channels, social media and traditional

A Brief Note On The Japanese Religion Of Shintoism
Larry Guindine
World History
Mr. Alschen
September 8, 2014
Documentary Questions:
1. People tended to worship nature gods such as spirits of the earth, sky and river. As the human
communities matured and developed, local, tribal and ancestral spirits became the center of focus
in their beliefs and religious life. This leads to inferring that people did not understand natural
phenomena and thought it was a punishment for their behavior from the deities. People thought
natural phenomena was able to change based on their relationships with the deities.
2. People created a sense of community and working together. Eventually, some people began to
question their belief systems through communication and realized that they can focus more on
relationships among human beings. This led to both uniformity, dispute and separation, among
people who had different views on religion and human interaction.
3. The Japanese religion of Shintoism is most closely associated. The emperor even had to
renounce his divinity of the descendant of the sun line at the end of World War II since this religion
associated itself with the whole population of Japan, not just the royalty. To this day, many Shinto
rituals are practiced in Japan, such as wedding ceremonies at shrines and methods of protecting the
people from pollution, such as cleansing themselves with water before entering the gates of a
Shinto shrine, are still practiced.

Changing A Company s Culture
Changing a Company s Culture
When it comes to corporate culture, there would be no better example than Apple Computer as
how change can take place based on the leadership of a single individual. This would be no other
than Steven Paul Jobs, better known to the world of Steve Jobs. Mr. Jobs was worth slightly over
million dollars at the age of 23. By the time he was 24 years old he was worth just over $10 million
and by the time he reached the age of 25 was worth well over $100 million dollars. A staggering
difference in just a three year period (Denning, 2011).
In the interview that was given to Robert Cringely in 1995 for a show that was going to air on the
Public Broadcasting System (PBS) entitled Triumph of the Nerds (Denning, 2011) Steve Jobs tells
how he created the culture at Apple from being different than the status quo. He speaks at length
about costs and how the accountants would never seem to see eye to eye with him when it came
to cost. What Jobs found along the way was that is just the way things were always done in the
past but other institutions and that was not going to be the case at Apple Computer. He knew he
could do better and change the way people would think even when it came to the accounting
department at Apple (Jobs, Cringely, Sen, 1995).
At the time the interview was given Steve Jobs was no longer working for Apple even though he
was its founder he had resigned from the company 10 years prior and many things have changed
for the worse at Apple

How The Diaspora Helped Violence Essay
How the Diaspora helped Violence Having established the motives for the Diaspora aiding the
nationalist, now it needs to be analyzed what the diaspora actually did to aid the nationalist
movement. The aid can be broken down into three categories, financial, political and physical
aid. The first and the biggest being financial aid and this type of aid was collected by members
of the Irish Diaspora in the US then given to various different nationalist groups. Seldom was the
money given to violent groups like the IRA but instead was given to other groups and in turn led
to the purchasing of arms or goods and stuff like that which the IRA could use. One of the major
organizations that did this was Noraid or Irish Northern Aid. The true purpose of Noraid dealt
with arms smuggling and fund raising and thus were closely aligned and allied with the
IRA(Brian Hanley 2004:1). The support for Noraid in terms of funding can be tracked in the
same exact way that the general diasporatic support can be tracked. The hunger strikes of 1980
81, in which IRA prisoners staged a hunger strike to protest conditions in their prison in which a
few of them died, was monumental in the history of Noraid because it led to not only an increase
of donation which in turn were given to IRA and groups like it but it also changed the image of
Noraid in the US. It led to an increase in membership and made the organization less radical which
meant that it year by year would have generally more memberships and

Verbal Analysis On Non Verbal Communication
Whilst verbal communication is valuable in successful interactions with others, understanding and
interpreting non verbal elements of communication, such as body language, is equally as
important. As a paramedic, deciphering the non verbal context of the message being expressed
can allow the clinician to identify the emotional state of the person seeking assistance. It has been
suggested that an astonishing 93% of a perceived message is derived from non verbal cues leaving
a mere 7% of message analysis stemming from the actual choice in vocabulary (Borg, 2009). Non
verbal communicationtranspires continually, many cues are preformed obliviously as unconscious
manifestations of an individual s state of mind; a person can unintentionally appear stressed,
anxious, happy or sad as a result of their thoughts and feelings, consequently it is difficult to have
total conscious control over these non verbal cues being presented (Hartley, 1999). The only way
to gain awareness of these unconscious non verbal behaviours is when someone else brings them
to our attention; this is taking into consideration as a Paramedic who appears concerned may
inadvertently cause unnecessary worry to a patient (Taylor, 2010). Other instinctive forms of non
verbal communication can transpire accidentally which may be illustrate the individual as
unprofessional and through poor communication, for example, defensive body language, such as
arm crossing your arms when it s cold may be perceived by a

Battle Hymn Of The Tiger Mother Amy
What does it mean to be American? The American identity has always been a complicated
discussion. It is by nature identified by diversity. Many think it has to do with the birthplace of the
person and others think it has to do with their inheritance. In 2011, Amy Chua published Battle
Hymn of the Tiger Mother as a memoir. Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother presents the evolution of
this American woman. The elements of Chuas evolution seemed to involve; native identity;
inherited identity; resisted identity and resolved identity. On October 26th 1962, one of the most
known authors was born: Amy Chua. Amy Chua was born in Champaign, Illinois in the Unites
States. She was raised as a catholic. Despite her having ancestry whom are Chinese, to be more
specific Kokkein dialect, she proudly carries around an American identity. She was born in the year
of the Tiger. In their culture, that represents people who are fearless, powerful, noble, and
authoritative. My familycomes from southern China s Fujian Province, which is famous for
producing scholars and scientists. Her parents migrated from the Philippines to the States before
she was born in order to continue their educational studies. Her father, Leon Ong Chua is an
American electrical engineer and computer scientist. He is a professor in the electrical
engineering and computer sciences department at the University of California, Berkeley. His
nationality is Holko and American. On the other side, the authors mother, Diana Chua was born in
China and moved to the Philippines at the age of 2. She converted to Catholicism when she was in
high school and received a degree in chemical engineering at the University of Santo Tomas. Amy
has three sisters and they are all known to be successful in their own ways. Amy Chua has 2
daughters: Sophia and Louisa. With Chua s Tiger parentingmethods, Sophia seems to respect and
listen to her mother which is the opposite than Lulu (Louisa). Lulu has more western
characteristics. For example, she talks back and doesn t respect her mother s orders. Briefly, these
aspects form her native identity. Amy Chua s evolution seemed to involve her inherited identity.

The Court Of A Public Telephone Booth
On the date of February 4th, 1965, believing that the Petitioner had been using public pay phones
to transmit illegal gambling wagers from Los Angeles to Miami and Boston, the Federal Bureau
of Investigation began their surveillance into the life of the Petitioner, Charles Katz. Fifteen days
later on February 19th, 1965 FBI agents working the case against the Petitioner had gained access
to a phone booth within a set of phone booths that the petitioner frequented on Sunset Boulevard in
Los Angeles, and summarily recorded the petitioner s side of conversations he was having on the
phone within a booth nearby. This surveillance lasted until the 25th (excluding February 22, as no
evidence was obtained due to technical difficulties) the date of the petitioner s arrest, which took
place immediately after he exited the same set of phone booths (Brief for Respondent 3). In this
case there are two major constitutional questions which need to be addressed: (1) whether evidence
obtained by attaching an electronic listening and recording device to the top of a public telephone
boothused and occupied by the Petitioner is gathered in violation of the Fourth Amendment, and (2)
whether the search warrant used by the FBI officers in this case violated the Fourth Amendment to
the constitution in that the warrant was (a) not founded on probable cause; (b) an evidentiary
search warrant and (c) a general search warrant. While the Petitioner would like the answer to be
yes in both cases,

Pollution Of The Air During The United States
The large majority of todays cars and trucks travel by using internal combustion engines that
burn fossil fuels and gasoline. A variety of emissions are polluted into the atmosphere when
burning gasoline to power cars and trucks. Emissions that are released directly from cars and
trucks into the atmosphere are the primary cause of car pollution but it still causes pollution the
air during the manufacturing and refueling processes. Primary pollution from motor vehicles is
pollution that is emitted directly into the atmosphere where as secondary pollution is caused
from chemical reactions between pollutants after they have been released into the air at least 92
million Americans still live in areas with chronic smog problems. The U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency predicts that by 2010, even with pollution controls more than 93 million
people will live in areas that violate health standards for ozone (urban smog) and more than 55
million Americans will suffer from hazardous levels of fine particle pollution, which is
especially dangerous to children and senior citizens. While new trucks and cars emit about 90
percent fewer pollutants than they did 30 years ago total annual vehicle miles driven have
increased by more than 140 percent since 1970 and are expected to increase another 25 percent by
2010. The emission reductions from individual vehicles have not adequately kept pace with the
increase in miles driven. As a result cars and trucks are still the largest single

The History of The Founding of Spalding (Extra): The history of Spalding is one that few know,
yet is incredibly interesting. The island nation of over 11 million, is relatively unknown, yet has
played a major role in global history, global conflicts, and has a deeply interesting founding story.
Founded as a country in 1543, there is a long path from its founding to where it is today. The
discovery of Spalding occurred in 1439, 100 years before confederacy. The island was discovered
by an expedition set out by the Walthford Family; an affluent family, who sailed the world looking
for uninhabited, profitable lands. When the expedition returned to France, they reported that the
island had large Quartz deposits in the Northern, mountainous side of the island. Quartz, being a
highly profitable mineral, drew the Walthford Family to send a large crew of workers there to mine
it. Ferrand Walthford, the eldest son, went with the crew, to oversee the mining.... Show more

Analysis Of The Garden Of Good And Evil By John Berendt
The world is filled with the idea that the righteous and just rule and villains are punished for their
crimes. However, in truth few villains are punished and many are not only unpunished, but
exalted. They are held above other men not on the merits of honor, valor, or dignity. Instead they
are carried on absolute force of the will and the blinding light of their charisma. Two such figures
stand proudly as the focus of the two books to be discussed. The first book, written by New York
journalist John Berendt, entitled Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil recounts the many and
varied acquaintances of its author as he embeds himself deeper into the unique culture of Savannah.

Lost in a modern world Savannah stagnates. Hidden beneath the history and the charm of
Savannah is a rot. The corruption of society s elite, a decay of morality that is ignored rather
than hidden and condoned rather than condemned. Berendt s work exposes the rot beneath the
paint without judgement. He presents the reader with the evidence as he has witnessed it.
Savannah a city removed from the world, filled with larger than life personalities that could only
exist in Savannah. Desperate to protect the lifestyle they have constructed around themselves.
They fiercely maintain the order of Savannah by protecting the corruption of the old order and
pretending that the faded façades have not succumb to rot; the pretense of elegance is more
important than reality. The outside world is not welcome in Savannah and neither are the
common allowed to rise above their station. The Savannah presented by Berendt s book offers a
rogue s galley of corruption hidden by a veneer of respectability. Men and women who present
one face to the world and wear another in the private moments. Several of Berendt s figures stand
in stark contrast to the polite and quiet Savannah society. One such person is James Williams an
outsider but a figure of great respect and position in the elite circles of Savannah society. For
example, Williams annual Christmas Party is a seasonal event of great concern to the local elite of

Eye and Spine Health Essay
Eye and spine health are a core elements of comfort. They are usually disregarded when people
sit down to use computers, tablets, and smartphones. Many people that have jobs that require
them to sit in front of computers for extended intervals of time do not think about their back and
eye health. Technology has also infiltrated itself into classrooms, which is a large risk because
many students do not consider their back and eye health. Eye health is usually not taken into

spine health. My point is not that computers are the sole source of spine and eye detriment, but that
computers and tablets should be enjoyed with caution. Many people assume that the worst that can
happen from overuse of technology is a little headache and a small amount of back pain. This is
simply not true. My point is that our bodies have been slowly changing to fit our computer usage,
and we are doing this unsuccessfully.
Using technology in the classroom can also be an issue if the proper measures are not taken to
protect the spine health of students. The enjoyment of tablets and computers is very common, and

The Performance Report Of The United States Air Force
How much effort would the average employee put in at work if they quality and quantity of work
produced, did not have any effect on their annual performance report? Most workers would do the
minimum, because there are no incentives to exceed the standard. How can the senior leaders
effectively differentiate between employees, to ensure that the correct individuals are being
promoted when all the employees receive the highest ratings on their annual performance reports?
This is one of the problems with the current performance reports in the United States Air Force
today. This paper will begin with a brief background on the current performance report issues, the
new performance report, and the effect on the individual perceptions. The paper will continue with
how the group is using communication to influence, and finally, how a change in culture is needed
for the new system to work.
The United States Air Force has been using the same basic process for performance reports and
promotions, with only a few minor changes since their inception 45 years ago. With the manning
in the Air Force being the smallest it has been since it s inception in 1947, the senior leaders want
to ensure they are promoting the best performers (Harper, 2014). Since military leaders can give
orders that could mean an individuals death and is a hierarchy, it is very important that a leader be
the most qualified person in technical and leadership ability. The Air Force uses the Weighted

The Greatest And Influential Musical Acts Of All Time
Psychologist and Writer Timothy Leary once famously said, I declare that the Beatles are mutants.
Prototypes of evolutionary agents sent by God, endowed with a mysterious power to create a new
human species, a young race of laughing freemen. , and I completely agree as does most of history.
The Beatleswere one of the greatest and influential musical acts of all time. They were one of
very few artist to have multiple songs on the Billboard 100 in the top 10 and are the only artist to

changes, whether it be multiple Fifth Beatles , classical and traditional clean cut young Brits

certain Japanese American woman, that cemented her legacy as a scapegoat in the 1970s. Paul
McCartney, John Lennon, Ringo Starr, George Harrison changed the way people looked at British
musicians and music in America in the 60s. In late 1957, John Lennon lead a band called The
Blackjacks when he was at the tender age of 16. Months after their formation, Lennon met Paul
McCartney who was a fresh 15 years old around the time. After he and Lennon realized the

Bhagavad Gita Reincarnation Essay
The duration of life in a material reality may be very long, but all living bodies in the material
world are eventually subject to a thing of the past and have to again develop other bodies. This
idea of one life coming after another, continuing an endless cycle of life; allows death to never
exist. In the epic Bhagavad Gitaby the scribe Veda Vyasa, the theme of reincarnation is portrayed by
Lord Krishna, telling a young warrior named Arjuna, to not dwell on the physical nature of this
world because it can all be born again.
In the Hindu religion, karma exists, which means whatever acts have been acted upon and
whatever thoughts have been though having created an impression on the physical nature of the
world and in the infinite universe. Arjuna is in the midst of charging to battle towards his cousins
over the inheritance of the kingdom. The cousins exiled them, but with a vow that Arjuna and his
brothers could reclaim the throne under certain conditions. Arjuna complied with the
circumstances and completed them. In court, the cousin King violates his vow and brings about
an unforgivable deed, ending in war. Now on the battlefield, Arjuna sees all of his loved ones on
the opposite side of the void between two warring parties. At the sight of those who raised Arjuna
to be a man stand to oppose him, I am unstrung, my limbs collapse/beneath me, and my mouth is
dry/there is a trembling in my body (The Bhagavad Gita pg. 1286). Arjuna calls out to his god

Rhino Poaching Essay
Poaching of Rhinos: A Growing Transnational Crime Industry
In 2011, the West African black rhino was declared extinct by the IUCN (International Union for
Conservation and Nature). Now all five rhino species left are in the endangers list (Poaching: The
Statistics). The reason the rhino population has nearly been driven to extinction is due to poaching.
The rhinos are being hunted and killed for their horns, which is a valued ingredient used in
traditional Asian medicines (Poaching of Rhinos in the Spotlight). In this essay, I will explore why
the rhinos are being poached, the overall impact of poaching in the rhino population, and what the
authorities are doing to deal with this profitable transnational crime industry.
At the beginning of the twentieth century, the rhino ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

because rhino horn is more expensive than most things out there. For example, one kilo of
marijuana is rated at about $5,060, one kilo of gold at about $42, 972, and a kilo of cocaine at
about $48,885. However, the value of a kilo of rhino horn is about $100,000. It is estimated that
one rhino horn can produce about $1 million dollars. This is the reason being why this is such a

making it a higher increase for the sixth year in a row (Poaching Statistics). The countries affected

REPORT ON CONSUMER BEHAVIOR IN SHOPPING MALLS
STUDY OF CONSUMER BEHAVIOR IN SHOPPING MALLS INTRODUCTION
Marketplaces in urban demographic settings attract a large number of buyers and sellers, which
can be termed as market thickness. The co existence of many shopping malls with traditional
markets in a marketplace causes market congestion. This problem may be resolved by developing
small kiosks for transactions and allowing consumers to test out customised products and services
from the main stores The growth of market share for specialised retailers and large departmental
stores depends on the size of the consumer segment in a given urban population. It is observed that
consumers buying preferences become more diversified as the extent of retail stores increases

Myriad number of literatures is available which have identified various dimensions and concepts of
customers‟ buying and consumption behavior. However, very few literatures are available
which have described about the various constructs of shopping behavior and even fewer
numbers of researchers have focused on Indian Consumers. According to Assael (1987),
shopping behavior is the most unique for behavior which the consumers exhibit. Gifts, clothing,
groceries, gifts and household items are some of the most common type of shopping which
consumers indulge in a highly frequent manner. But according to Dholakia (1999), occasion and
motives are also some crucial points which influence the consumers shopping behavior. For
example, for some consumers, shopping is all about getting the best deal out of bargaining, for
some (especially teenagers or the young crowd) shopping is a means of getting acquainted and
interact more with others in a social context and for some it is a way of breaking out from the
regular monotonous professional and personal routine (Reid and Brown, 1996). It is also possible,
that the motives behind two consumers shopping at the same store could be same or different.
Same motives may arise as when the customers look for convenience, shopping experience etc,
whereas motives mat vary as a result of compulsion or by free choice. Compulsion

These damages are fines that the court may impose on the company or individual in an effort

5 states that negligence occurs when someone suffers injury because of another s failure to live
up to a required duty of care. (Cross Miller, 2012) The duty of care that the driver had was to
obey the traffic laws. He neglected to obey such laws which ended in an injury to the driver of
the truck. There are four elements to negligence. These elements are duty of care, breach,
causation and damages. Duty of Care People are able to act freely, as long as their acts do not
infringe on the rights of others. When a situation such as this accident occurs they neglect their
duty of care. The driver of the dump truck had the duty of care to abide by the law and failed to
do so by ignoring the red light. Breach The driver breached his legal requirement to duty of care
by failing to adhere to a red light. This breach is measured under a reasonable person standard in
that any reasonable person in the same situation would have stopped at the red light rather than
ignore it. A breach is simply a violation of a tort or law. Causation Was the person s injury caused

Argumentative Speech On Social Media
Mental health is one of the biggest rising health problems among teens and young adults but
surely this isn t down to social media, right? Wrong. With the rates of anxiety and depression
increasing by 70% over the past 25 years and an increase from 10,500 to more than 17,500 girls
aged 17 or under being admitted to hospital due to self harm over the past decade but have rapidly
increased in the last 5 years coinciding with the increased use of social mediafrom young people.
This sickening statistic highlights the horrid emotions our younger generations feel, every like or

27% of children who spend 3 or more hours on social media a day have symptoms of mental
health issues compared to 12% of children who spend no time on social media. Furthermore in an
article published by the guardianDr Bernadka Dubicka chair of the Child and Adolescent Faculty

of sleep deprivation among young people this also proving that social media isn t only affecting our
children s mental health but their physical health too.
Admit it you re guilty of marvelling over other people s relationships and comparing them to

their spouse was more interested in their phone when they were together, this showing that even

A result on the next page shows that at sales price of $21.50, the sales quantity rises to 1,140,085

the price further, at the point of $15.50, it is where the company s profit on product 101 is in the
highest position as it gives the net profit of $3,901,908.
However, there are several factors for the company to choose its pricing strategy. In this case, it
may be better if the company choose to sell its product at $21.50 instead of $15.50. This is due
to the fact that price cutting appears to be not a good strategy in this industry. If every player in
the same industry starts to lower the price of their products, every company will end up having
the low price, which in turns lead to a low profit margin. Moreover, referring to the calculation in a

The Digital Millennium Copyright Act Essay
In our present day in age, technology and the internet has made it very easy to find and obtain
music, movies, television shows, and other media forms without having to pay a fee. In recent
years, the music and movie industry, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and
the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) initiated a campaign to combat the illegal
sharing and downloading of files, songs, and movies. These illegal files are usually transferred
through users and peer to peer networks including LimeWire, FrostWire, Bearshare, Kazaa, and
most importantly Napster, which initiated it all. The illegal files are not only limited to music and
movies but also various types of pirated software, such as Microsoft Office or Adobe Photoshop,
that are accompanied with serial numbers and instructional manuals. The RIAA and MPAA argued
that if an individual exerts much time, effort, and money into a piece of art or software that they
created, they should be thoroughly compensated. Therefore, the Digital Millennium CopyrightAct
was created and instituted by the United States Congress to restrict internet piracy by banning the
fabrication, allocation, and illegal distribution of pirated materials. In addition, the DMCA was
used to accommodate the constant changes of the growing digital age into current copyright laws
that are usually reserved for books, magazines, or articles. The Digital Millennium Copyright Act is

Blood Spatter Analysis and Interpretation Moving forward to questions of blood spatter
interpretation, historically a subjective area of practice, the work of Trombka et al. (2002) sheds
important light on how computerized analysis can now lead to the automation of many elements
of blood spatter analysis. This is incredibly beneficial, for this particular CSI technique, because
of the fact that computerized analysis brings about the type of parsimony, associated with
rigorous hard sciences, which increases a discipline s credibility in a court of law. Indeed, and
because computerized spatter analysis will inevitably bring about greater reliability in spatter
analysis, inasmuch as cases will now be analyzed in identical ways by different analysts, the
discipline s probative relevance to court cases is likely to be increased dramatically. In a similar
vein, Raul et al. (2005) argue that, in conceptualizing of the gunshot, we must make assumptions
regarding its blood effects on the basis of trajectory and other elements. Examining shots to the
head, the authors note that, depending on the trajectory of the bullet, the head will move in a
different way. Because of this, blood spatter analysis

Personal Protective Equipment Essay
Many work environments depend on the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) to keep
workers safe. Although healthcare environments may be the first industry that comes to mind,
people who work with hazardous chemicals, dangerous machinery or equipment, and others all
require specific articles of PPE to stay safe.
Keeping PPE on hand and in excellent condition, however, is only a portion of the safety protocol.
Using and removing equipment correctly, at the right place and at the right time, is also required to
minimize the risk of employee injury or contamination.
Different types of PPE are designed to offer employees different types of protection. Those who

Training employees to follow specific guidelines, such as the following for healthcare facilities, will
help to minimize the risk of contamination:
Studies verify that when workers are taught how to properly remove their PPE at an appropriate

Since there are more people in the UK, and they are living longer, the number of second hand
properties being sold is less, causing the prices of ones on the market to increase.
Dwellings have a high income elasticity of demand, so if the level of income increases demand for
property will also increase. Also, when people s income increases they are more likely to buy
properties than rent, also increasing average prices. There has been an overall increase in house
prices because 20 years ago average income was ВЈ19,774, peaking to 24,683 in 2008, then
decreasing to ВЈ22,524 in 2014 (source: rate inflation).
Social trends can also affect house prices, recently a trend has emerged for later marriages, the

has led to an increase in demand for smaller dwellings such as apartments, causing the prices of

The Epidemic Of The Nineteenth Century
Introduction The cholera outbreak or the epidemic of the mid nineteenth century was the start of
modern epidemiology. John Snow is considered the father of the modern epidemiology.
Epidemiology is defined as the distribution and determinants of health and diseases, morbidity,
injuries, disability, and mortality in populations. Epidemiological studies are applied to the
control of health problems in populations. (Friis, Epidemiology 101, p. 3). During the mid 1800
s, John Snow revolutionized the epidemiological methods we are currently still using. John
Snow believed that cholera was transmitted by contaminated water and was able to demonstrate
this by mapping out the cases of cholera. Once he mapped out the cases he found that there was a
cluster of cases around the Broad Street pump. The pump was removed after Snow present his
evidence and the cases of cholera started to decline. This is truly remarkable for its time, linking
the contaminate water to increasing cases of cholera at the time and this was all done before the
development of the germ theory and the invention of the microscope. Shortly after the John Snow
s discovery, London started to in placed sewage systems. Sewage systems and treatment are
responsible for providing clean drinkable to people in developed countries. Some developing
countries aren t fortunate enough to have sewage systems and treatments plants making it hard for
their citizens to have access to clean drinkable water. Water is known to be

Qantas Airways
STRATEGIC DIRECTION * Qantas Airways Limited may have won the capacity war between
itself and Virgin Australia, but the cost has been considerable. The company now needs to consider
drastic measures that were previously out of the question, such as selling low cost carrier Jetstar or
its highly profitable loyalty programme. Much of Qantas Airways Limited s future, however, is in
the hands of the Australian Parliament, and whether or not it dismantles the 1992 Qantas Sales Act
to allow majority foreign ownership.

In February 2014, the company announced an A$252 million loss in the first half of FY14 alone,
and the need to cut costs by A$2 billion and the workforce by 5,000 full time employees or part
time equivalents. Planning also to exit underperforming routes, the airline as the end result of this
cost reduction programme would be smaller but hopefully profitable. Given the severity of the
situation, Qantas is lobbying for the Federal Government not only to repeal or at least alter
theQantas Sales Act, but also to guarantee its debt. * Qantas is by some distance the leading airline
in Australia, in relation to both domestic flights and international flights. Despite a gradual eroding
of share in both the domestic and international markets, this is a situation that is unlikely to change
over the forecast period. Qantas is so resolute in its attempt to maintain its dominance that it has
announced a determination not to allow its domestic market share to fall below 65%. Euromonitor
International s 49% value share for Qantas, down from 53% in 2012, is including both international
and domestic flights. Such a resolution has required Qantas to essentially match any capacity that
Virgin Australia adds to the market. This has been an expensive strategy for Qantas, particularly
since it has promised

From the sequence scientists were able to determine that virus probably began its life in an animal
then mutated before picking up the power to infect people.
Transmission
SARS appears to spread by close person to person contact. It is thought that transmission is most
readily occurred through respiratory droplets. These can be produced when an infected person
coughs or sneezes. These droplets are propelled through the air and are deposited on the mucous
membranes of the mouth, nose, or eyes of a person that is nearby. It is also possible that the virus
can spread when a person touches a surface or object contaminated with infectious droplets and then
touches their mouth, nose, or eyes. Furthermore, it is possible that SARS CoV might be airborne
spread or by other methods that are not yet known.
Diagnosis
Once infected the typical incubation period for SARS is 2 7 days, however, in some cases it
may be as long as 10 days. The illness usually begins with a fever. Sometimes chills accompany
the fever and other symptoms including headache, general feeling of discomfort, and body aches.
Some people also develop mild respiratory symptoms at the outset. After the incubation period of 2
to 7 days SARS patients may develop a dry nonproductive cough that might be accompanied by or
progresses to the point where insufficient oxygen is getting to the blood. The CDC says that SARS

The Efficient Markets Hypothesis Posits That `` Security...
The efficient markets hypothesis posits that security prices fully reflect all available information
(Fama, 1991). In an efficient market, a stock s price accurately depicts its fundamental value.
However, researchers have shown that real markets are actually inefficient, and are hindered by
risky arbitrage and irrational investors. Because of market frictions, incomplete information, and
systematic biases, stock prices react to changes in uninformed demand in addition to actual
fundamental shifts, resulting in sustained and pervasive mispricing. This essay aims to challenge
the theory of market efficiency, and in so doing, support the position that stock prices do not always
reflect stocks fundamental values. Riskless arbitrage is one underlying assumption of the efficient
markets hypothesis. It theorizes that any opportunities to profit through mispriced stocks will be
immediately exploited by savvy arbitrageurs and subsequently eliminated, returning market price to
equilibrium at its fundamental value. However, in real markets, arbitrage is risky due to market
frictions and incomplete information (Shleifer Summers, 1990). The market friction of transaction
costs such as commission and the bid ask spread may limit the willingness of investors to participate
in arbitrage. Likewise, incomplete information creates risk for arbitrageurs, particularly when
shorting overvalued stocks. The market may potentially do well and thus justify the overpricing, or
the market may

Energy Sources For Alternative Energy
The constant increase and release of carbon dioxide emissions into our environment have drastic
effects on our environment. These greenhouse gases warm the earth impacting its naturally
occurring events and processes, such as acid rain, destruction of natural habitats, and even
influencing the natural flow of the currents in our oceans. The goal has been to create diverse
methods of generating powerful, dependable energy sources that do not have negative
repercussions on our environment. Alternative energy refers to sources that do not create
undesired consequences, such as fossil fuels do (Alternative Energy 2015). Not only are
emissions from fossil fuels concerning, but also these resources are not going to be available
for our use forever, making changes for alternative energy sources a pressing topic of discussion.
British Petroleum and Royal Dutch Shell, two of the world s largest oil companies, predict that
by 2050, one third of the world s energy will have to come from some type of alternative energy
source (Alternative Energy 2015). Constant growth of population, climate changes, and depletion
of fossil fuels makes it necessary for renewables to play a bigger role in powering our world.
These resources are often thought to be free sources of energy because they are naturally
occurring events used to form electric power (Alternative Energy 2015). In addition, all of these
forms have a large decrease in carbon emissions compared to conventional energy sources

Pro Life Or Pro Choice
Pro Life or Pro Choice The restrictions and the debate that surrounds the issue of abortion has
changed dramatically throughout the course of history and it continues to change until this very
moment. All around the world and in every known society, women have used abortion to control
their reproduction, regardless of it s legality. Abortion used to be exercised freely in the United
Sates, up Until all the states started to ban It and place a lot of restrictions on it. They stated that
a woman can not abort except in extreme cases in which the mother s life might be in danger.
After the restrictions caused a lot of health issues and raised concerns on women s health, The
Government abolished all the restrictions. In this paper I will analyze and discuss three main
positions on the issue of abortion. First, there are those who associate themselves with the title pro
life . These individuals are anti abortion, birth control, embryo research or anything that can
control or cause any harm to the fetus. Second, there are those who at the other end of the
spectrum who firmly believe that if a woman decides to abort, then it is her constitutional right to
do so without any interference from the government. Third, are those who believe that if a woman
is raped or her life is in danger, then abortion should be completely and solely up to the woman, but
other than that, abortion should be illegal. This group of individuals are also for birth control and
do not oppose educating

St. Louis Narrative

around this time she came second, but she couldn t help but call his name. Louie, answer me.
What? he barked as he finally turned towards her. As he loomed over her, standing at the foot of
their bed, buried in his cellphone, she got her first good look at him for the day. She took in his
ragged demeanor; his dirty worn out clothes too large for his scrawny frame. Through a tear in
his pants she could see a cut on his leg, no doubt attained by begging on the streets of St. Louis.
She never saw him do it anymore but there was no doubt in her mind that he had kept that habit,

Power In One Flew Over The Cuckoo s Nest
Ken Kesey uses motifs of machinery to portray that abuse of power is detrimental, it forces one
to conform, and causes a loss of individuality in society. The central metaphor of machinery
compares Nurse Ratched s working style to mechanical processes, displaying that she abuses her
power by manipulation.( laeadin) So she really lets herself go and her painted smile twists,
stretches to an open snarl, and she blows up bigger and bigger, big as a tractor, so big I can
smell the machinery inside the way you smell a motor pulling too big a load (Kesey 5).Within
the ward she has a heightened sense of self. The mechanical diction describes Nurse Ratched and
her work ethic as that of a machine and its parts. She is taking hold and controlling the ward, just
as machines do. The words, So she really... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Though she smiles a lot and talks sweetly, she s not a kind or charming woman; instead she is a
woman with a strong will for control. She pursues power with intensity and is very successful at
getting people to do what she wants. Nurse Ratched has the ability to present a false superficial self,
and she has complete and total control over the ward and her emotions at all times. This exemplifies
that the mechanistic and oppressive forces in society build up through the abuse of power and
dishonesty by authoritative figures. (Lead in) Manipulative to the core, the only thing that really
matters to Ratched is her desire to control everything around her the environment, the staff, the

A Grand Gothic Torture Chamber in Edgar Allan Poe s Short...
Edgar Allan Poe s short story, The Pit and the Pendulum , uses the grand gothic setting of a
torture chamber during the Spanish Inquisition that contains a mysterious pit, symbolizing how
the absence of religion in the narrator s life makes him fear the unknown. Once the narrator
discovers the pit, he is filled with dread at the thought of falling into it: Shaking in every limb, I
groped my way back to the wall; resolving there to perish rather than risk the terrors of the wells,
of which my imagination now pictured many in various positions about the dungeon (Poe 7).
The narrator is a heretic, so he most likely does not accept the idea of life after death. He has
likely imagined various fates. Each pit that he has imagined in the room represents a different
fate, so he fears falling into them. In fact, the narrator fears falling into the pit more than any
other torture inflicted upon him. Poe writes, Neither could I forget what I had read of these pits
that the sudden extinction of life formed no part of their most horrible plan (7). Although the
narrator does not know himself what will happen to him after death, but no doubt he has read
about what happens to heretics after they die according to Christianity: they go to Hell, where
they are tortured for eternity. While his body would die, his soul, the source of his life, would be
trapped forever. If falling into the pit leads to this fate, the narrator would greatly fear it. Later in
the story the pit begins to

The recent development of water supply projects in the cities and townships has not met the
increasing demands of urban population and huge investment is necessary to improve water
supply facilities in the cities. 212.Water drainage Most urban centers are served by various forms
of open drainage such as ditches and street gutters. Only a small percentage has access to sewerage
systems. The lack of wastewater treatment in the cities constitutes a major health hazard during
periods of storm and flooding, when coliform and fecal pollutants from human wastes are easily
spread through contaminated floodwaters.Water logging problems in the main cities are due to the
dilapidated drainage systems and an aging culvert system, parts of which dated since the French

the wastes flow together with the rainy waters into canals and lakes. Maintenance of existing

Atkins Diet Healthy
Is the Atkins Diet healthy?
The Atkins Diet, also known as a ketogenic diet, promotes a low carbohydrate and high fat content
in an individual s eating habits.1 It was designed in 1972 by Dr. Robert Atkins, and its popularity
derives from the elimination of calorie counting and disregard for consumption restrictions on fat,
protein content, or portion size. 2, 3 The Atkins Diet is divided into four stages(insert 3). The initial
stage dramatically decreases carbohydrate intake to less than 20g per day(insert 3). Subsequently,
every two weeks carbohydrate intake increases; with attendant weight loss being a marker of
successful progression.3 This paper evaluates whether or not the Atkins Diet is healthy, in particular
it narrows the focus on aspects of three body systems: the cardiovascular system, the respiratory
system, and the nervous system.
According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), heart disease is the leading cause of death,
with risk factors such as high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol; obesity, unhealthy eating, and
physical inactivity among others (cite CDC and NIH). The standard diet that is prevalent among
the American culture, is one that is rich in carbohydrates with a high glycemic index.4 ... Show

  • 4. Impact Of Social Darwinism On Society The real source of Social Darwinism is Herbert Spencer an English sociologist who took Darwin s theory and applied it to how societies change and evolve over time. As a sociologist, he did not feel the need to improve society, for he felt that societies were bound to change own its own. He took the theory of evolutionone step beyond biology and applied it to say that societies were organisms that progress through changes similar to that of a living species. It was his philosophy that societies would begin simple and then progress to a more complex form. He also found similarities between animal organisms and societies in that both had three main systems. The first system is the regulative system for animals that would be the central nervous system in societies it would be government... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He also created the phrase survival of the fittest due to the fact that he believed human behavior was designed in a way that strives for self preservation. The theory of social Darwinism created the thinking of the survival of the fittest as that the strongest and the fittest should survive and be on top in society, and the weak should be allowed to die out. This allowed him to believe that the rich and powerful became so because they were better suited to the social and economic climate of the time. He believed it was natural or normal that the strong survived at the cost of the weak. He is also perhaps best known for coining the term survival of the fittest, elaborating what came to be known as the philosophy of social Darwinism. But, popular belief to the contrary, he did not merely appropriate and generalize Darwin s work on natural selection; he only incorporated Darwin s theory of natural selection into his preexisting synthetic philosophical ... • 5. Ethical Sourcing And The Supply Chain Ethical Sourcing and the Supply Chain Growing competition and the ever increasing emphasis on cost reduction and efficiency has caused many firms to outsource various components of their operations outside of the country. As firms are thrusted into the global marketplace and transformed into multinational corporations (MNCs), new challenges arise related to the differences/disparity in corporate social responsibility(CSR) practices between countries (Chandler Werther Jr., 2014; Cruz, 2013). Globalizationhas increased companies need to consider the importance and strategic value of CSR (Chandler Werther Jr., 2014; Cruz, 2013). At the forefront of international CSR issues, is the consumer demand for ethically managed supply chains. Cruz (2013) stated that poor CSR performance, at any stage of the supply chain process, may damage a company s most important asset its reputation (p. 3995). Based upon a case study on the outsourcing of production activities by Apple Inc. to the controversial contract manufacturer Foxconn, this paper will discuss whether or not firms have responsibility for the supply chains they choose to utilize. The paper will also highlight some of the advantages and disadvantages of Apple s outsourcing decision, along with cost benefit analysis of such decision. • 7. Abraham Lincoln s Boyhood Home From The Age Of 7 Indiana, Abraham Lincoln s boyhood home from the age of 7 to 21, has memorialized our 16th president with two statues in its capital city of Indianapolis. Both statues were controversial from the beginning whether because of the amount of money it would take to pay for them or their placement. The first statue was erected in 1934 and simply entitled Abraham Lincoln. This statue was funded by a trust fund established by Henry C. Long, a wealthy lumberman to be used after his wife s death, the trust fund was said to have $10,000 $25,000 in it. Long s stipulation was that with this money a statue honoring Lincoln would be built in the southeast corner of University Park. Architects of the park were hesitant to include the statue because it would spoil the artistic symmetry of the park. Finally, the Judge Smiley N. Chambers ordered the statue to be put up and granted the city access to the fund that housed the $16,800 it would cost to build the statue. The man who was commissioned to sculpt the statue was Henry Hering of New York. Henry had done some statuary work previously in the memorial shrine in the park. His work upon the memorial is entitled Pro Patria, and when it was erected in 1929 it was the largest bronze cast in the United States. Hering had studied and worked with Augustus Saint Gaudens another prominent sculptor at the time. The statue was unveiled during the Army day program in 1935. The program was expected to attract thousands to see the nation s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. The Use of Performance Enhancing Drugs in Sports Today Performance enhancers are very prominent in professional sports today. A lot of players are facing suspensions and other penalties for using them. The sport that gets scrutinized the most for this is Baseball. Many former users in the MLB (or formally the NABBP) have come out saying that they were using these drugs while playing. Some of these players are Jorge Sosa, Antonio Bastardo, and the famous Alex Rodriguez. Although these drugs have been prohibited, players are still finding ways around the tests which is why in some other countries they are legal so that no one player can have an unfair advantage. There have been many arguments and disputes about the origin of the sport known as baseball. This has led many people to wonder where America s favorite pastime came from. Some people believe that the sport has taken shape from a primeval community game called rounders. Other historical sources remark that Thomas Wilson condemned this game and a few other sports. In England he was considered a conformist leader. These speculations have led to curiosity to the game of stool ball. In this game, the batter would stand in front of a stool while a different person pitched him the ball. If the batter s ball was caught in the field he would be out. Also, if the ball hit the stool that was behind the batter, he would again be out. • 11. Still I Rise By Maya Angelou And Where Is The Love, By The... Do you ever feel that you are out of place, like a standout in a busy crowd? This is how it feels to be discriminated against due to the colour of your skin. For more than 500 years, coloured people have faced the threat of intrusion and violence; they have been used, abused and discriminated against due to the colour of their skin, their religion or where they come from. In the 21st century racismis still roaming the airs and it is still a common threat; there are currently laws in place to reduce the violence that it brings but still we show ignorance. There have been many poems and songs created to portray this issue; these include still I rise by the famous peace protestor Maya Angelou and Where is the love by the world known band the Black Eyed Peas. Both of these pieces identify the pressing issues of racism and discriminationthat face our society every single day. Still I Rise is a poem written by Maya Angelou. Through this poem, Angelou has used third person which allows the audience to relate to the social issue that she is introducing. Maya Angelou structured this poem in a certain way to be able to portray how much this issue meant to her emotionally and historically. • 13. The Inconvenience Of Reading In Charles Foster Kane s... The Inconvenience of Reading Young children are egocentric, unable to understand the world around them from a perspective other than their own. Yet due to neural plasticity, they rapidly develop agglutinative schemas, categories of knowledge that shape how they understand and respond to the world. As time passes, their horizons expand and solidify. Now adults, they read the world as we all do: through contextual mediums and filters. While the relationship between the reader and the world is multiplex, reading is an essential means by which one constructs and derives meaning. Since we read the world through mediums, mass media is one of the most potent institutions. It cultivates societal and cultural norms, serving as an educator and entertainer. The media builds narratives, framing real life events to fulfill their agendas. In Citizen Kane, publishing tycoon Charles Foster Kane capitalizes on the power of modern mass media. He uses the New York Inquirer to lead his yellow journalism crusade. The sensationalist narratives he directs lead the newspaper s readers to view Cuban independence via a war with Spain as a necessity. Kane is not alone. A number of governments frame the news to control how their citizens read the world. Propaganda films and firewalls alike allow the state to manufacture its own narrative in the context of global affairs. In democratic nations alike, yellow journalism tactics have mutated to adapt to today s media channels, social media and traditional ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 14. A Brief Note On The Japanese Religion Of Shintoism Larry Guindine World History Mr. Alschen September 8, 2014 Documentary Questions: 1. People tended to worship nature gods such as spirits of the earth, sky and river. As the human communities matured and developed, local, tribal and ancestral spirits became the center of focus in their beliefs and religious life. This leads to inferring that people did not understand natural phenomena and thought it was a punishment for their behavior from the deities. People thought natural phenomena was able to change based on their relationships with the deities. 2. People created a sense of community and working together. Eventually, some people began to question their belief systems through communication and realized that they can focus more on relationships among human beings. This led to both uniformity, dispute and separation, among people who had different views on religion and human interaction. 3. The Japanese religion of Shintoism is most closely associated. The emperor even had to renounce his divinity of the descendant of the sun line at the end of World War II since this religion associated itself with the whole population of Japan, not just the royalty. To this day, many Shinto rituals are practiced in Japan, such as wedding ceremonies at shrines and methods of protecting the people from pollution, such as cleansing themselves with water before entering the gates of a Shinto shrine, are still practiced. 4. • 15. Changing A Company s Culture Changing a Company s Culture When it comes to corporate culture, there would be no better example than Apple Computer as how change can take place based on the leadership of a single individual. This would be no other than Steven Paul Jobs, better known to the world of Steve Jobs. Mr. Jobs was worth slightly over million dollars at the age of 23. By the time he was 24 years old he was worth just over $10 million and by the time he reached the age of 25 was worth well over $100 million dollars. A staggering difference in just a three year period (Denning, 2011). In the interview that was given to Robert Cringely in 1995 for a show that was going to air on the Public Broadcasting System (PBS) entitled Triumph of the Nerds (Denning, 2011) Steve Jobs tells how he created the culture at Apple from being different than the status quo. He speaks at length about costs and how the accountants would never seem to see eye to eye with him when it came to cost. What Jobs found along the way was that is just the way things were always done in the past but other institutions and that was not going to be the case at Apple Computer. He knew he could do better and change the way people would think even when it came to the accounting department at Apple (Jobs, Cringely, Sen, 1995). • 16. How The Diaspora Helped Violence Essay How the Diaspora helped Violence Having established the motives for the Diaspora aiding the nationalist, now it needs to be analyzed what the diaspora actually did to aid the nationalist movement. The aid can be broken down into three categories, financial, political and physical aid. The first and the biggest being financial aid and this type of aid was collected by members of the Irish Diaspora in the US then given to various different nationalist groups. Seldom was the money given to violent groups like the IRA but instead was given to other groups and in turn led to the purchasing of arms or goods and stuff like that which the IRA could use. One of the major organizations that did this was Noraid or Irish Northern Aid. The true purpose of Noraid dealt with arms smuggling and fund raising and thus were closely aligned and allied with the IRA(Brian Hanley 2004:1). The support for Noraid in terms of funding can be tracked in the same exact way that the general diasporatic support can be tracked. The hunger strikes of 1980 81, in which IRA prisoners staged a hunger strike to protest conditions in their prison in which a few of them died, was monumental in the history of Noraid because it led to not only an increase of donation which in turn were given to IRA and groups like it but it also changed the image of Noraid in the US. It led to an increase in membership and made the organization less radical which meant that it year by year would have generally more memberships and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 17. Verbal Analysis On Non Verbal Communication Whilst verbal communication is valuable in successful interactions with others, understanding and interpreting non verbal elements of communication, such as body language, is equally as important. As a paramedic, deciphering the non verbal context of the message being expressed can allow the clinician to identify the emotional state of the person seeking assistance. It has been suggested that an astonishing 93% of a perceived message is derived from non verbal cues leaving a mere 7% of message analysis stemming from the actual choice in vocabulary (Borg, 2009). Non verbal communicationtranspires continually, many cues are preformed obliviously as unconscious manifestations of an individual s state of mind; a person can unintentionally appear stressed, anxious, happy or sad as a result of their thoughts and feelings, consequently it is difficult to have total conscious control over these non verbal cues being presented (Hartley, 1999). The only way to gain awareness of these unconscious non verbal behaviours is when someone else brings them to our attention; this is taking into consideration as a Paramedic who appears concerned may inadvertently cause unnecessary worry to a patient (Taylor, 2010). Other instinctive forms of non verbal communication can transpire accidentally which may be illustrate the individual as unprofessional and through poor communication, for example, defensive body language, such as arm crossing your arms when it s cold may be perceived by a ... Many think it has to do with the birthplace of the person and others think it has to do with their inheritance. In 2011, Amy Chua published Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother as a memoir. Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother presents the evolution of this American woman. The elements of Chuas evolution seemed to involve; native identity; inherited identity; resisted identity and resolved identity. On October 26th 1962, one of the most known authors was born: Amy Chua. Amy Chua was born in Champaign, Illinois in the Unites States. She was raised as a catholic. Despite her having ancestry whom are Chinese, to be more specific Kokkein dialect, she proudly carries around an American identity. She was born in the year of the Tiger. In their culture, that represents people who are fearless, powerful, noble, and authoritative. My familycomes from southern China s Fujian Province, which is famous for producing scholars and scientists. Her parents migrated from the Philippines to the States before she was born in order to continue their educational studies. Her father, Leon Ong Chua is an American electrical engineer and computer scientist. He is a professor in the electrical engineering and computer sciences department at the University of California, Berkeley. His nationality is Holko and American. On the other side, the authors mother, Diana Chua was born in China and moved to the Philippines at the age of 2. She converted to Catholicism when she was in high school and received a degree in chemical engineering at the University of Santo Tomas. Amy has three sisters and they are all known to be successful in their own ways. Amy Chua has 2 daughters: Sophia and Louisa. With Chua s Tiger parentingmethods, Sophia seems to respect and listen to her mother which is the opposite than Lulu (Louisa). Lulu has more western characteristics. The Court Of A Public Telephone Booth On the date of February 4th, 1965, believing that the Petitioner had been using public pay phones to transmit illegal gambling wagers from Los Angeles to Miami and Boston, the Federal Bureau of Investigation began their surveillance into the life of the Petitioner, Charles Katz. Fifteen days later on February 19th, 1965 FBI agents working the case against the Petitioner had gained access to a phone booth within a set of phone booths that the petitioner frequented on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, and summarily recorded the petitioner s side of conversations he was having on the phone within a booth nearby. This surveillance lasted until the 25th (excluding February 22, as no evidence was obtained due to technical difficulties) the date of the petitioner s arrest, which took place immediately after he exited the same set of phone booths (Brief for Respondent 3). In this case there are two major constitutional questions which need to be addressed: (1) whether evidence obtained by attaching an electronic listening and recording device to the top of a public telephone boothused and occupied by the Petitioner is gathered in violation of the Fourth Amendment, and (2) whether the search warrant used by the FBI officers in this case violated the Fourth Amendment to the constitution in that the warrant was (a) not founded on probable cause; (b) an evidentiary search warrant and (c) a general search warrant. The island nation of over 11 million, is relatively unknown, yet has played a major role in global history, global conflicts, and has a deeply interesting founding story. Founded as a country in 1543, there is a long path from its founding to where it is today. The discovery of Spalding occurred in 1439, 100 years before confederacy. The island was discovered by an expedition set out by the Walthford Family; an affluent family, who sailed the world looking for uninhabited, profitable lands. When the expedition returned to France, they reported that the island had large Quartz deposits in the Northern, mountainous side of the island. Instead they are carried on absolute force of the will and the blinding light of their charisma. Two such figures stand proudly as the focus of the two books to be discussed. Many people think that back pain is a normal occurrence; however special care should be take when using technology, and is often ignored, however it can be a sign that there are more severe, underlying problems. On one hand, I understand that this new generation is being raised amid a myriad of technological advances, and avoiding them would be very difficult. But on the other hand, I still insist that we consider how much time we spend in front of these devices. In other words, limiting the time that we spend in front of computer screens can improve our eye and spine health. My point is not that computers are the sole source of spine and eye detriment, but that computers and tablets should be enjoyed with caution. Many people assume that the worst that can happen from overuse of technology is a little headache and a small amount of back pain. This is simply not true. My point is that our bodies have been slowly changing to fit our computer usage, and we are doing this unsuccessfully. However, there are several factors for the company to choose its pricing strategy. In this case, it may be better if the company choose to sell its product at $21.50 instead of $15.50. Moreover, referring to the calculation in a below table, it also implies that if the price is lower than $12, sales will not be able to cover the variable cost incurred, thus it will bring about a loss in net profit. |Sale price |Unit sold |% Cash |Actual | | | |Discount |Sale Price | ... • 35. The Digital Millennium Copyright Act Essay In our present day in age, technology and the internet has made it very easy to find and obtain music, movies, television shows, and other media forms without having to pay a fee. In recent years, the music and movie industry, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) initiated a campaign to combat the illegal sharing and downloading of files, songs, and movies. These illegal files are usually transferred through users and peer to peer networks including LimeWire, FrostWire, Bearshare, Kazaa, and most importantly Napster, which initiated it all. The illegal files are not only limited to music and movies but also various types of pirated software, such as Microsoft Office or Adobe Photoshop, that are accompanied with serial numbers and instructional manuals. The RIAA and MPAA argued that if an individual exerts much time, effort, and money into a piece of art or software that they created, they should be thoroughly compensated. Therefore, the Digital Millennium CopyrightAct was created and instituted by the United States Congress to restrict internet piracy by banning the fabrication, allocation, and illegal distribution of pirated materials. In addition, the DMCA was used to accommodate the constant changes of the growing digital age into current copyright laws that are usually reserved for books, magazines, or articles. The Digital Millennium Copyright Act is just and protects the rights of the artists and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Blood Spatter Analysis and Interpretation Moving forward to questions of blood spatter interpretation, historically a subjective area of practice, the work of Trombka et al. (2002) sheds important light on how computerized analysis can now lead to the automation of many elements of blood spatter analysis. This is incredibly beneficial, for this particular CSI technique, because of the fact that computerized analysis brings about the type of parsimony, associated with rigorous hard sciences, which increases a discipline s credibility in a court of law. Indeed, and because computerized spatter analysis will inevitably bring about greater reliability in spatter analysis, inasmuch as cases will now be analyzed in identical ways by different analysts, the discipline s probative relevance to court cases is likely to be increased dramatically. In a similar vein, Raul et al. (2005) argue that, in conceptualizing of the gunshot, we must make assumptions regarding its blood effects on the basis of trajectory and other elements. Examining shots to the head, the authors note that, depending on the trajectory of the bullet, the head will move in a different way. Because of this, blood spatter analysis ... Although healthcare environments may be the first industry that comes to mind, people who work with hazardous chemicals, dangerous machinery or equipment, and others all require specific articles of PPE to stay safe. Keeping PPE on hand and in excellent condition, however, is only a portion of the safety protocol. Using and removing equipment correctly, at the right place and at the right time, is also required to minimize the risk of employee injury or contamination. Workers naturally want to protect themselves but often need instruction on how to achieve that goal. Trends in property prices are passionately tracked by economists because it is often a person s biggest purchase and can also affect the rest of the economy. Property price trends are affected by many factors, however they are like all other normal goods, price and demand are inversely related, if the houseprices are high fewer people will be willing and able to buy a house. Property prices tend to increase as time goes by, this is positive equity as the owners are better off. • 40. The Epidemic Of The Nineteenth Century Introduction The cholera outbreak or the epidemic of the mid nineteenth century was the start of modern epidemiology. John Snow is considered the father of the modern epidemiology. Epidemiology is defined as the distribution and determinants of health and diseases, morbidity, injuries, disability, and mortality in populations. Epidemiological studies are applied to the control of health problems in populations. (Friis, Epidemiology 101, p. 3). During the mid 1800 s, John Snow revolutionized the epidemiological methods we are currently still using. John Snow believed that cholera was transmitted by contaminated water and was able to demonstrate this by mapping out the cases of cholera. Once he mapped out the cases he found that there was a cluster of cases around the Broad Street pump. The pump was removed after Snow present his evidence and the cases of cholera started to decline. This is truly remarkable for its time, linking the contaminate water to increasing cases of cholera at the time and this was all done before the development of the germ theory and the invention of the microscope. Shortly after the John Snow s discovery, London started to in placed sewage systems. Sewage systems and treatment are responsible for providing clean drinkable to people in developed countries. From the sequence scientists were able to determine that virus probably began its life in an animal then mutated before picking up the power to infect people. Transmission SARS appears to spread by close person to person contact. It is thought that transmission is most readily occurred through respiratory droplets. These can be produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. These droplets are propelled through the air and are deposited on the mucous membranes of the mouth, nose, or eyes of a person that is nearby. It is also possible that the virus can spread when a person touches a surface or object contaminated with infectious droplets and then touches their mouth, nose, or eyes. Furthermore, it is possible that SARS CoV might be airborne spread or by other methods that are not yet known. Diagnosis Once infected the typical incubation period for SARS is 2 7 days, however, in some cases it may be as long as 10 days. The illness usually begins with a fever. Sometimes chills accompany the fever and other symptoms including headache, general feeling of discomfort, and body aches. Some people also develop mild respiratory symptoms at the outset. • 46. The Efficient Markets Hypothesis Posits That `` Security... The efficient markets hypothesis posits that security prices fully reflect all available information (Fama, 1991). In an efficient market, a stock s price accurately depicts its fundamental value. However, researchers have shown that real markets are actually inefficient, and are hindered by risky arbitrage and irrational investors. Because of market frictions, incomplete information, and systematic biases, stock prices react to changes in uninformed demand in addition to actual fundamental shifts, resulting in sustained and pervasive mispricing. This essay aims to challenge the theory of market efficiency, and in so doing, support the position that stock prices do not always reflect stocks fundamental values. Riskless arbitrage is one underlying assumption of the efficient markets hypothesis. It theorizes that any opportunities to profit through mispriced stocks will be immediately exploited by savvy arbitrageurs and subsequently eliminated, returning market price to equilibrium at its fundamental value. However, in real markets, arbitrage is risky due to market frictions and incomplete information (Shleifer Summers, 1990). The market friction of transaction costs such as commission and the bid ask spread may limit the willingness of investors to participate in arbitrage. Likewise, incomplete information creates risk for arbitrageurs, particularly when shorting overvalued stocks. The market may potentially do well and thus justify the overpricing, or the market may ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

These greenhouse gases warm the earth impacting its naturally occurring events and processes, such as acid rain, destruction of natural habitats, and even influencing the natural flow of the currents in our oceans. The goal has been to create diverse methods of generating powerful, dependable energy sources that do not have negative repercussions on our environment. Alternative energy refers to sources that do not create undesired consequences, such as fossil fuels do (Alternative Energy 2015). Not only are emissions from fossil fuels concerning, but also these resources are not going to be available for our use forever, making changes for alternative energy sources a pressing topic of discussion. British Petroleum and Royal Dutch Shell, two of the world s largest oil companies, predict that by 2050, one third of the world s energy will have to come from some type of alternative energy source (Alternative Energy 2015). Constant growth of population, climate changes, and depletion of fossil fuels makes it necessary for renewables to play a bigger role in powering our world. Once the narrator discovers the pit, he is filled with dread at the thought of falling into it: Shaking in every limb, I groped my way back to the wall; resolving there to perish rather than risk the terrors of the wells, of which my imagination now pictured many in various positions about the dungeon (Poe 7).
