Design and comparison of a residential building (g+10) for seismic forces usi...eSAT Journals
Abstract Earthquakes take a huge toll on life and property. Since the effect of seismic forces on structures is quite significant, it is important that the design of the structures must be done in the best possible way to take into account these effects and thereby aiming for an adequate structural response. Different international seismic codes differ significantly in parameters specified. With the variations in parameters the performance of the building varies. Hence, it is necessary to do a comparative study so as to conclude which building will perform better. This paper presents with the analysis and design of a G+10 for seismic forces using four international building standards- IS1893, Euro code 8, ASCE7-10 and the British Codes. The analysis of the building was done using STAAD.Pro.V8i. The building was then designed as per the specified codes. Once the design was completed a pushover analysis was done in SAP2000 to check the seismic performance of the building. A comparative study between the design and the seismic performance of the building was done. Keywords: Seismic forces, Seismic Standard, Seismic performance, Comparative Analysis.

Building Information Modeling is a design and documentation methodology based on coordinated, high quality information. It enables design and construction teams to create and manage information about a building project consistently and reliably across the scope of the project. The information is stored in a single building model. This ensures that information is coordinated, consistent, and complete.

Building information modelling (BIM) software called Revit was created by Autodesk. It enables architectural designers, engineers, and construction specialists to generate and manage 3D models of structures and MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) systems. For creating and modelling different building components like walls, floors, roofs, doors, windows, and stairs, Revit offers capabilities. Also, depending on the building model, users may generate and manage plans, quantities, and cost projections.

BIM means a multitude of things to a myriad of stakeholders, companies, and geographical locations, based on multiple factors.
However, from a holistic viewpoint, the meaning we append to and the expectations we have of BIM are not as important as the connection that BIM brings when properly deployed with cloud-based solutions; thus, filling so many inefficiency gaps.
This is the era of Connected Construction and there has been an increased need for remote collaboration across every industry.
For whatever reason you implement Digital Transformation in your practice, you will most likely reap more benefits in the long run, if you can collaborate and connect with the other stakeholders across your projects.
The Role of BIM in Modern Construction ProjectsTawwabKhan4
In the rapidly evolving landscape of modern construction, the integration of technology has become paramount for success. One such technological advancement that has revolutionised the industry is Building Information Modelling, commonly known as BIM. With its digital representation of the physical and functional characteristics of buildings, BIM offers a transformative approach to construction projects.
In this article, we take a look at the significance of BIM, exploring its importance and the multiple levels or stages it encompasses. We will also uncover the role of precision engineering in constructing stronger and more sophisticated buildings.
Understanding the Power of BIM: A Digital Revolution in Construction
At its core, Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a digital representation of a building’s physical and functional attributes. It encompasses a wide range of information, including architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical details, all stored in a centralised database. This comprehensive model serves as a shared knowledge resource for all stakeholders involved in a construction project.
BIM is a game-changer in the construction industry due to its ability to enhance collaboration, improve communication, and streamline workflows.
There are many definitions of BIM out there and all are accurate in most senses. BIM is an intelligent model-based process to create building model data that is essentially coordinated and computable and thus AEC professionals can more efficiently design, build and operate buildings and infrastructures. A true BIM model consists of the virtual equivalents of the actual building parts and pieces used to build a building which means a building can be “built” even before its physical realization through a virtual model.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

The Placeholder objects in Revit MEP 2012 are ducts and pipes that can be used early in the design stage to indicate the approximate location of a duct or pipe run, or to show a layout that hasn’t been fully sized and you do not want to show the ducts or pipes as double line geometry.
You are able to create a duct or pipe placeholder layout path. The placeholder layout path is a simplified duct or pipe without fittings. These objects allow for easy creation, modification, and future conversion to the more detailed ducts or pipe layouts currently available.
Revit MEP also allows you to tag and schedule the duct or pipe placeholder elements. And you have the ability to run an interference check on the placeholder elements.
Bottom Line: Enhance your design intent even from the earliest stages with the new duct and pipe placeholders, enabling you to show early design iterations without the need to fully design the system.
In Revit MEP 2012 the Check Duct Systems and Check Pipe Systems commands on the Analyze tab now act as toggles. If you click one of the buttons, "graphical" warnings will show for invalid duct or piping systems in the current view.
You will receive warnings when systems are not properly connected or flow direction is mismatched. Graphical disconnect warnings can be displayed on open ends of ducts and pipes highlighting disconnected geometry.
The Disconnect markers show pipe, duct, conduit, cable tray, and electrical connectors that are not currently connected.
Another new feature allows you to limit or turn off system calculations. Depending on the system type, the options are All, Flow Only and None.
You can now identify the properties of a system connector prior to connecting it. It is now possible to more clearly identify what type of connections there are, see which is which, and identify and possibly edit related system data from the connectors.
Bottom Line: Help identify and resolve disconnected systems and elements more quickly and easily in Revit MEP 2012 with the new system enhancements.
With Revit MEP 2012 you can display panel schedule totals in current or load values, merge multi-poled slots into a single cell and display load classification totals for individual circuits. You can also add a default string that will be applied to any Spare or Space’s Load Name parameter in a Panel Schedule.
You can now allow the number of slots in a Panel Schedule to be determined from the max pole breaker parameter in the electrical equipment rather than explicitly setting it in the Panel Schedule Template settings.
Bottom Line: Work dynamically and experience greater flexibility by selecting to display panel schedules based on your company standards.
With the 2012 release, Revit MEP continues to focus on improving the experience of working on large projects with worksharing.
Workset visibility can now be managed via view templates. This new functionality is available in the standard view templates dialog box.
There are now new display modes allowing users to visualize different status of ownership making it easier to communicate between you and your colleagues. The four different display modes are:
The ownership status of elements
The specific owners of elements
Elements that are out of date with the central model or have been deleted in the central model
Which elements are assigned to particular worksets
You can now disable worksharing, it is an option during the “Detach from Central” workflow.
Revit MEP now provides balloon notifications when editing requests are placed, granted and denied. The notifications have buttons to let you Show the elements involved, and to Grant and Deny a request. It provides a much faster and more efficient way for you to communicate with your colleagues.
Bottom Line: Worksharing enhancements help you better understand and collaborate on shared models across the project team. Gain more visibility into element ownership and status to better manage team workflows.
Revit Point Cloud tools connect laser scans directly into the Building Information Modeling process, helping to accelerate renovation and retrofit projects. By visualizing point clouds directly within the Revit MEP software environment, it is easier to author an as-built BIM with more confidence and accuracy.
Improvements to DWG export functionality allow you to map Revit categories and subcategories to layers in DWG files, giving you more control over layer naming. In addition, you can also map Revit lines, patterns, and fonts to their DWG equivalents.
Model linking enhancements provide more flexibility in working within large projects by allowing you to tag a variety of elements within linked files. New to this release is the ability to tag rooms, areas, keynotes, beams, and beam systems.
Bottom Line: Interoperability enhancements provide more flexibility in working within large projects by allowing more options with linking, importing, and exporting.
Visualization enhancements present you with more flexible visual style combinations, helping to add value to visualization techniques and improve the interactive experience.
The Graphics Display Options dialog has been enhanced to a more componentized format that closely resembles the Rendering dialog’s structure. You can now Save a View Template directly from the dialog as well.
Some of the new and enhanced view styles are:
Realistic with Edges mode
Ambient Occlusion (Ambient Lighting) in Hidden Line and Consistent Colors mode
Shadows are now available in Consistent Colors mode.
Ghosted Surfaces, which displays all surfaces with a 30% transparency, is now available in all view styles.
Highlight and selection colors have been updated to provide a better visual when selecting elements. Transparency and solid fill have been enabled on selection. New grip graphics and new temporary dimension graphics have been enabled as well.
You can now create, share, and manage material properties across many projects. Data sharing between Revit MEP and other applications creates better workflow compatibility.
An enhanced Paint tool includes a visual preview of the materials to be applied by the Paint tool and a new Remove paint tool. Additionally, it is now possible to differentiate scheduled materials between those applied to elements and those applied to painted surfaces.
You have the ability to manage your material property sets by using Material Properties Library dialog. You can modify a property set, load a property set from a library, or delete all unused property sets and materials from a project.
You can now browse for a materials library that has been previously created. Your rendering capabilities because you can share different property sets from different rendering software. You can also remove a library that you no longer need to keep your project organized.
Bottom Line: Revit MEP has increased graphic presentation capabilities which help engineers better communicate design intent.

Family editor and conceptual design tools have seen several enhancements to extend their capabilities.
Cutting solids from solids and voids from solids, are now available on a family instance of any category in the project environment. Both of these modeling enhancements will increase the capability of defining zones for Conceptual Energy Analysis.
You can now perform round function in formulas, and values can be now rounded up or down. You can also allow creation of parameters to drive component types in families. Those parameters can be driven by conditional formulas and applied to divided surfaces.
Adaptive components can be now placed in the project environment. When placed in the project, adaptive components behave similarly to other families from the generic model template, as well as behaving similarly when placed in conceptual massing families.
Bottom Line: Integrating conceptual design workflow and family editor capabilities into the project environment helps to increase flexibility in modeling to help provide a smoother design workflow
Sloped piping tools support enhanced productivity for piping design. You can easily create pipe slope values and transfer them from project to project for design efficiency.
You also now have more control when creating sloped pipe, round duct, and conduit layouts. You will be able to see the actual elevation and slope value when snapping to sloped piping.
When drawing a sloped pipe with Ignore Slope to Connect enabled and snapping to a sloped piping with different elevation, the values for Current Offset and Slope shown in the slope tooltip are the actual elevation and slope.
Tagging invert elevations at the beginning or end of a pipe run, minimizes the guesswork and manual calculations. Also keep track of the current pipe elevation with dynamic on screen tooltips while routing sloped piping.
In addition, connecting between two points in space regardless of the slope required is easier.
Bottom Line: Designing sloped piping systems is now more accurate and easier with the new and enhanced capabilities.
Revit MEP 2012 enables you to select to view only the system you are working on.
For example, if you wanted to view only the electrical systems and hide mechanical and plumbing systems from view, you can. The system browser enhancements helps check that the elements are fully connected and contributing to system load requirements for more accurate sizing. You can see the total electrical load, air flow or pipe flow at any point within a system.
The new tree structure improvements allow you to see the connected systems more easily. Selecting multiple elements in system browser will automatically highlight the elements in the view.
Bottom Line: Gain greater flexibility during design and focus on the systems of importance to you by viewing only the systems you wish to see.
Engineers can create and name custom duct and piping system types, as well as access properties for graphical overrides such as color, line weight, and line patterns to objects within a specific system. You can also assign objects to systems without needing to connect to system equipment. Revit MEP also allows you to annotate system geometry with a system abbreviation, and limit or turn off system calculations when not required.
With Revit MEP 2012 you can now create and name duct and piping system types from a predefined set of “basic” system types. When you create a duct or pipe system from a selection of fixtures, it is possible to select a system type, specify a name for the system, and start in the System Editor.
A duct or piping system type contains properties for graphical overrides. You have the ability to control the color, line weight, and line pattern for the collection of objects assigned to a system using these properties. The graphic overrides apply to the project and are not view specific like Filters are.
There is a Material property in the System Type where you can override the Material and its graphic attributes. You now have the ability to apply a user specific rendering material that is separate from the physical material. For example, the physical material might be carbon steel, but the material should render blue.
Bottom Line: With Revit MEP 2012 you can gain better model and construction document visualization that makes designing and visualizing building systems easier.
You can easily create new conduit runs or pipe runs parallel with the existing conduit or pipe runs as needed.
You can even create parallel conduit runs from conduits that are connected to equipment surface connectors or cable tray. Parallel conduit that use the Same Bend Radius will result in each run having the same bend radius as the original run.
When modeling conduit that does not use fittings, Concentric Bend Radius will use varying bend radiuses to product a rainbow effect on the bends.
Parallel pipe runs can be created just as easily including the pipe fittings.
Bottom Line: More easily model parallel conduit or pipe runs to help show design intent including connecting to equipment or cable tray using Revit MEP 2012.
Revit MEP 2012 now enables you to change the type of run for multiselection of duct, pipe, cable tray, or conduit run.
When creating Duct, Pipe, Cable Tray, or Conduit layouts you are able to decide whether or not to use the elevation or size of the object element being snapped to.
All commands for the Justification Editor have been removed from the options bar and are now located on the ribbon.
Insulation and lining can be added to entire duct or pipe runs with a single command. You are also able to do an interference check for duct or pipe insulation against other MEP, structural, or architectural objects.
The copy/monitor feature has also been enhanced to include additional categories. “Accept difference” is now an option for fixture phase and fixture type violations. In addition, “Move fixture” is now an option for fixture position violations.
Bottom Line: Help to increase your productivity by easily accessing dynamic and interactive 3D BIM modeling tools to support building system design. More easily model and customize your ducts, in an enhanced tool-based user interface that complements your workflow.
Revit MEP 2012 continues to improve on performance. Regenerate more granularly to avoid updating of elements unaffected by editing changes, which helps reduce the time significantly. You also now have the ability to purge unused Import Categories and Object Styles.
Loading elements into memory is now multithreaded, thereby helping to reduce view open times when elements are displayed for the first time in the session. Multithreading can be enabled for computation in perspective 3D views. It will be more noticeable as the number and complexity of curved surfaces increases.
Parallel silhouette computation is a new performance feature that calculates in parallel the exterior outline of multiple objects seen from a particular viewpoint based on the available threads.
Bottom Line: Performance improvements help deliver a smoother experience when working on Revit MEP projects of any size. More multithreaded operations and improvements to imported data management improve open and load times within a project.
