Rennie McQuilkin presents meaning in his poems through his precise word choice and use of
figurative language which blends in with carefully chosen ideas and memories. With art being his
main focus, McQuilkin splits up his work into two parts; a narrative beginning and a more symbolic
end in both The Collecting and in Birth of a Poet. The Collecting is one of the poems in the book
North of Eden which is quite literally divided into two separate parts. With that divide McQuilkin
intends to separate the reality and the dream; both of which the narrator experiences himself. At the
beginning, in part I, most of the stanzas are pure description and not so much of reflection. Uncle slips
a hand through the noose of the turtle line, and lowers himself, this is a good example of the narrator
describing what he observed while being on the boat. Most of the first part is similar to the quote
above and McQuilkin mainly plays on the importance of the details in the story. The word choice in
part I is not necessarily complicated, the author really did intend it to be fully understood. It is
challenging to find meaning in the first few stanzas, however, as the poem continues it becomes easier
to recreate the full picture of the event. Even when he carves away the under shell, rips out the guts,
depicts the narrator in part I of the poem, specifying every little detail. One other unique feature of
McQuilkin is that he does not try to overcomplicate his poetry through the use of unnecessary
elements; his words are simple but very thought through. Through the use of figurative language in
part II and more specifically through incorporating metaphors the author is able to capture most of the
reader s interest. The two parts of this poem signify the reality and in contrast, the dream that the

in their cages. We had filled each cage with hay the night before so they would be warm for the ride
there and for the time they d be stuck sitting in their cages. After we loaded them up, we headed to the
auction. Once we arrived at the auction, we brought the bunnies over to the people who tagged their
cages and brought them out to the barn to be stacked up next to other cages. The other cages were
filled with exotic birds and some other rabbits. In some of the pens inside the auction barn, they had
pigs, goats, sheep, and emus. The outside pens had a variety of cow breeds like the shaggy highlanders
and brahmas. There were also horses, ponies, alpacas, buffalo, and llamas. We alway arrive early, so
people are still coming in with animals they would be auctioning off that day. My Mom and I went
into the auction barn to see if they had anything interesting out there that we might like to acquire. As

For the Central Avenue project there was a near total absence of structures (Paul 1998, 18) and thus
they relied heavily on city archives which mostly lead to dead ends (Baber 1998, 16) and the
memories of people who lived there or knew the history which could lead to the problem of memories

During the 14th century, marriage and the role of women in the marriage were very different from
today. Most marriages in the 14th century occurred between an older man and a young girl; a girl is
usually chosen because they were pure and could produce the most heirs. The bride s family would
pay the husband through a dowry, consisting of land, money, or anything of high value. The more
unattractive the women were, the more the family would have to pay the husband. Right here, women
are already being objectified by their looks. Men want a girl who looks pure and untouched, why
would anyone want a dirtied girl. Being someone who was not good looking was an even bigger
disgrace since your appearance does not please your husband, you are not doing your job of keeping
him happy. Women are often portrayed as an object of men to be bought and fondled with; they are
not allowed to control their lives. Geoffrey Chaucer took part in telling the story of how many women
acted in the 14th century and how the women were portrayed at this time. Chaucer s views on

The majority of fighting on the Western front during World War one was fought in trenches. These
were long, deep ditch like structures where soldiers would live, fight and most likely die. The two
armies would be stationed on parallel trenches where they would face each other in a long battle of
attrition, there would be many different lines of trenches where armies would retreat to or advance to a
