Tonkin Incident Research Paper
Was the Gulf of Tonkin incident really an incident or were the 2 attacks on the USS Maddox within
reason? Thus the correct historical analogy may not be Nixon s secret air campaign and incursions into
Cambodia, but the Tonkin Gulf incident the alleged pair of attacks by North Vietnamese naval forces
against American destroyers that President Lyndon B. Johnson used to win public support and
congressional approval for escalating the confrontation with North Vietnam. The government has
ways to make information and secret operations disappear as if it never happened by making them

Codenamed Operations Plan (OPLAN) 34A, the activities were conceived and overseen by the
Department of Defense, with the support of the Central Intelligence Agency, and carried out by the
South Vietnamese Navy. Initial successes, however, were limited; numerous South Vietnamese raiders
were captured, and OPLAN 34A units suffered heavy casualties. In July 1964, Lieutenant General
William C. Westmoreland, commander of the U.S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, shifted
the operation s tactics from commando attacks on land to shore bombardments using mortars, rockets,
and recoilless rifles fired from South Vietnamese patrol boats. It is also notable that McNamara in this
conversation clearly favors explaining to Congress the link between the incident and the OPLAN 34A
activities. The naval battle between the destroyer USS Maddox and several North Vietnamese torpedo
boats occurred in the immediate aftermath of a series of 34 A maritime raids on North Vietnamese
coastal targets. After observing North Vietnamese patrol torpedo boats pursuing the vessels that had
attacked Hon Me, the Maddox withdrew from the area. Nevertheless, when later queried by NSA
headquarters, the destroyer indicated she had been unaware of the OPLAN raid on the island. That
ignorance set the stage for a showdown between North Vietnamese forces

Syntax In William Carlos Williams s The Red Wheelbarrow
In his short poem The Red Wheelbarrow, William Carlos Williams uses enjambment to disrupt
conventional syntax, encourage slow reading and close consideration of each word, and deconstruct
images into their essential parts in order to establish a more vivid visualization of the world he
presents. Enjambment is characterized by the incomplete syntax at the end of a line in poetry due to
the lack of terminal punctuation. This allows for the meaning of a line to flow over to the next,
creating a sense of disorder, ambiguity, and anticipation that is only satisfied by the continuation of the
thought on the next line where the syntax is either complete or continued. By use of enjambment,
Williams s The Red Wheelbarrow expands a single sentence of sixteen words over the course of eight
lines. Deceptively simple, the poem describes a scene Williams observes in which a red wheelbarrow
stands coated in rainwater next to chickens. But by writing this sentence in eight lines, Williams
inserts space between each word, disrupting the reader s expectation of flow and forcing closer
reading of each line and word that now carries a much heavier weight and meaning.
Each word, separated from the others by means of enjambment, is a carefully chosen and thought
provoking brushstroke in the painting Williams creates for the mind s eye. The first line simply reads
so much depends, immediately creating a sense of tension that gives strength to the verb depends. On
the next line, the

Why Do People Really Good At Heart
Anne Frank stated in her diary that In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at
heart. This quote goes to show how optimistic she really was. She hoped that underneath all of the
hatred that not only the Nazis beheld, but perhaps also the people that she was hiding with for years,
there was at least a small amount of good in them. Personally, I have no clue how she could think that
such horrible people are actually good at heart, but her personality definitely reflected it. In addition to
this quote indicating that she was optimistic, it suggests that she had hope. She most likely was aware
that the Nazi s were not good at heart, but she refused to take that as a fact, and she wanted to make
herself think otherwise.

Advantages Of Lenovo
3.1 Recommended Future strategic direction to attain competitive advantage
3.1.1 Proposed strategy
It is important for a company to choose a relevant internationalization strategy in order to attain
competitive advantage. Basically, competitive advantage is a company s ability to perform in one or
more ways that competitors cannot or will not match (Philip Kotler, Gary Armstrong, 2007, p182)
As Lenovo has been successfully internationalizing into other country by using joint venture as their
strategy, the new relevant proposed strategy that the company can use is direct exporting. Direct
exporting is considered relevant to be used as the new strategy for Lenovo because it is the least risky
strategy of all. In fact, Lenovo can maximizes their profit and minimizing their risk in direct exporting

As direct exporting is the new proposed strategy in 3.1.1, Lenovo will be focusing on the pressures for
global integration which is to seek cost reduction through economies of scale and arbitrage benefits.
As Lenovo wanted to attain competitive advantage through cost leadership strategy, they first have to
cut down their cost in order to be able to sell product with lower price. Hence, the pressure of global
integration in cost reduction is identified there.
The advantages that global integration can give to Lenovo through cost leadership are that they can
help Lenovo to save costs and achieve global efficiencies. They can also improve the quality of
product and processes. High quality product promotes global brand recognition and gives rise to
customer preference and efficient international marketing programs. They create economies of scale,
which can result in lower operational costs, higher quality standardized product and homogenization
consumer demand.

Les Miserables Movie Analysis
Les MisĂŠrables is a movie that takes place in 1815 to 1832 during June Rebellion. During this time
period, King Louis XVIII holds the throne for the beginning and it changes to King Charles X who is

behaviors. Javert however, vows to make sure that he captures Jean and puts him back into prison.
Eight years later, Valjean takes in a child, Cosette, after her mother s death. However, Jean s life is not

Pemberton Company, which gave him a huge salary, did not run so smoothly. The reason why
Pemberton s business did not run very well was due to the period of prohibition during the year 1885.
Since Atlanta prohibited the use of alcohol in 1885, Pemberton had to swap the French Wine Coca
formula by removing the word French Wine (Biography John S. Pemberton Inventor of Coca Cola).
Cocaine, being the originally formula used for Coca Cola, is no longer the main content for Coca
Cola. Cocaine was then replaced with sugar, caffeine, starch, citric acid, and oil fruits. For the main
ingredient, Pemberton had to find and collect seeds cola plant native to tropical regions of West Africa
and the tree coca leaves from South Africa (Biography John S. Pemberton Inventor of Coca Cola).
Pemberton dried both the cola nut and coca leaves manually. Pemberton made his business successful
and the potion he had created was revealed as he had hoped (Biography John S. Pemberton Inventor
of Coca Cola). Then Pemberton s colleague Robinson came up with a name for the potion and he
suggested the name Coca Cola . Pemberton approved the name Coca Cola . The Coca Cola formula,
coming from Pemberton, was named Merchandise 7X , or it was abbreviated M7X. The naming of the

The Framers Of The Constitution
Civics and Citizenship
The Framers of the Constitution looked to history for examples of governments that directly
represented the people. Early Romans wanted to create a lasting republic, a government in which
citizens rule themselves through elected representatives. A republic is a government in which citizens
rule themselves through elected representatives. Americans liked the roman form of government but
also knew that eventually the Roman republic became a dictatorship, a government in which one
person rules with all authority. The Framers wanted to avoid the Roman s fate. They wanted to create
a permanent government where the informed citizens ran their own government.
Another historic document the Founders looked to was the Magna Carta. In 1215, many of the
landowning gentry of England rebelled against the unpopular King John. In order to help restore peace
the rebels forced the king to sign the Magna Carta. It placed limits on the power of the English king
and made Parliament the ruling body in England. The English Bill of Rights (1689) was another
document the Framers looked to. It gave the citizens of England certain rights such as freedom of
speech and separation of powers.
John Locke published Two Treatise [essays] of Government in 1689. In these tow documents Locke
proposed that every person had the rights of life, liberty and property. The government cannot take
these unalienable rights away unless they have a reason. Locke also stated that the

Discussing The First World War
When discussing the First World War, there are a myriad of topics, theories and debates that can be
brought up, especially when its regarding to its breakout and and what lead to it. There are multiple
direct and indirect causes that all are interconnected with one another, making it very difficult to just
discuss about one topic without it overlapping with another completely different topic. One of the
most unquestionable causes that lead to the outbreak of the war was the alliance system that was
active in the early twentieth century and that was however set into motion well before in the mid
nineteenth century. The alliance system can be viewed as major causes from two main different
perspectives; it can be considered as a immediate cause or as a indirect background cause. However,
the existence of the alliances is crucial to the bringing about of the first world war from both
perspectives The existence of the multiple alliances and treaties is considered as a major immediate
and direct cause to the bringing about of the First World War because it turned a conflict between two
countries that could ve been easily contained into a full scale world war that involved multiple
countries. To fully understand how and why this series of chain events were set into motion, one must
know and comprehend all the past alliances, treaties and accords that were created in the past and that
in time would bring to the two major European alliances, the Triple Entente and the Triple

The Dark Side Of The Black Rimmed Clock
The aroma of musty wood and rusty metal lingered in the still air as my forehead beaded with droplets
of cold sweat. As I sat fidgeting on an uneven blue chair, I absentmindedly watched as students
entered small rooms with distressed emotions plastered on their anxious faces. There was one
particular student I watched from a distance as she cautiously walked into a room that was lined with
tearing yellow wallpaper. Her rich auburn blonde hair was matted down to her scalp from her sweat
and I noticed her calves were shaking the tiniest bit. Her face portrayed an uneasy look as she slowly
closed the door and I gradually snapped back into focus.

5 more painful minutes and you ll get this over with, I muttered to myself as my feet slowly dragged
along the smooth checkered tile. I approached the assistant band director and forced a tiny smile. Mrs.
Sharkey was fairly normal in height and she wore a sleek royal blue skirt that was rimmed in a fraying
pom pom lace with a sheer white shirt. She wore a leather pair of sandals and her chestnut brown hair
framed her oval face that was lightly coated with blush and golden brown eyeshadow. The teacher
quickly scribbled something down onto her clear plastic clipboard with a blue ballpoint pen and
pointed her index finger to a seaweed green door.
The second door from the left is where you will be testing, she explained.
The sheet music and scales are on the stand as well. Make sure to press the record button once to start
and again to finish recording.
I nodded to her instructions while I stared at the ground and teetered from one foot to the other.
Don t be nervous, remember, this test is only part of what we have to determine where you will move
up to next year, Mrs. Sharkey reassured me, as if she could sense all of my emotions spilling out of
my body.
I quickly gave her a look of thankfulness and swiveled around to face the row of metal soundproof

Introduction The Hospital is an advanced tertiary medical center located in Palm Beach County,
Florida. Recently, the Hospital has seen a growing trend towards higher utilization of the Emergency
Department by patients who routinely go the Emergency Department for their primary healthcare
needs. Patients are going to the Emergency Department for non emergent reasons because they have
not developed a relationship with a primary care doctor ( ED Navigators, 2014). There is major
concern that patients are not connecting with a primary care provider and they are not accessing the
appropriate level of care for their medical needs. The Hospital faces a negative financial impact and
decrease in the quality of patient care because patients continue to routinely use the Emergency
Department for their primary healthcare needs. This report recommends the hiring of a Patient

emergent reasons to connect with a primary care provider. This report includes the recommendation
for solving this problem, the supporting reasons for the recommendation, the counterargument and

Prostitution And The Act Of Prostitution
The world s oldest profession, also known as prostitution, is considered a grey area in morality
(Thiroux). Prostitution is defined as selling oneself or one s talents for base purpose (Agnes). Contrary
to popular belief, there are plenty of arguments for prostitution and the act of prostitution becoming
legal. Coinciding with popular belief, there are more arguments against the act of prostitution being
legalized. While some consider the act of prostitution to be an immoral act others will consider it a
victimless crime. Most people consider it to be immoral and use arguments such as it cause crimes,
spreads social diseases and AIDS and it is extramarital and commercialized. The opposing argument,
which is for the act of prostitution say that it, is a victimless crime, is a safe sexual release and is not
socially acceptable and it could be controlled by the government (Thiroux). The underlying question
now asks, is the act of prostitution moral?
If you were to mention prostitution to someone, they will typically react with disgust. Furthering the
conversation on the topic and mentioning legalizing prostitution will be followed with shock or
laughter. Prostitution is a major part of what we call the Sex Industry, which involves all personnel
that are involved in both legal and illegal varieties of sexual commerce. This includes everything from
X rated magazines, videos and DVDs, to computer pornography to strip clubs (Weitzer). While the

Predestination Social Contract
Predestination and the Social Contract: A Monstrous Combination
Eighteenth century French theologian Cornelius Jansen was famous for his principle of predestination:
humans are either fated to suffer, or they are not. In other words, he believed that no number of good
acts can save one who is predestined to suffer. Another hotly debated philosophy of the time period
was that of nature versus nurture. If one s personality is determined entirely by his nature, then no
amount of social influence should be able to alter this predetermined character, a perspective not
unlike that of Jansenism. On the other hand, Romantic philosopher Jean Jacques Rousseau is famous
for his belief that human beings are inherently good, but are corrupted by the evils ... Show more

The village is in a state of senseless panic, as evidenced by Shelley s words roused, fled, and attacked.
Of course, one can assume that the Creature s abnormality frightened the villagers. Fear is, according
to psychologist Mary C. Lamia, PhD, the most powerful emotion. When the villagers react with their
primal instinct to fear the hideous Creature, they transform his benign approach into a battle. In fact,
Mary Shelley finesses her diction to show war imagery when the Creature explains how [he] retreated
and found a shelter... from the barbarity of man. The word retreated characterizes an offensive
defensive relationship between the Creature and the villagers. Not only does a hostile relationship now
exist between the Creature and civilians, but the Creature feels the need to protect himself from their
barbarity. For this first civilian interaction, Shelley draws a stark contrast between the villagers
preconception of the Creature and his true nonconfrontational nature: even though the Creature is
bigger, stronger, and could probably counter their attacks, he chooses to retreat. At this point, the
Creature does not know that his appearance leaves him vulnerable to unchecked prejudice, but a
fundamental idea has been engrained in his mind: these humans are not his friends. Humanity, thanks
to its overwhelming tendency to prejudge, has made a bitter first impression. A major step in the
decision making process is weighing costs and benefits. The Creature wants to present himself as
good enough to live among humans, so he educates himself and learns language through observing the
De Lacy family. However, when the Creature attempts to introduce himself, his already fragile
impression of humankind is shattered. The Creature put much effort into gaining approval from the De
Lacys, but reaped no benefit. He laments to

Persuasive Essay On Crowdsourcing
Need a photo of yourself turned into anime? Want to analyze your customers signatures to see if they
re crazy? Need help choosing wedding colors? No problem, just post it to Fiverr and let the
community help you out. Would I recommend this for anything that had a substantial impact on your
business? Probably not. But if you need someone to record audio versions of your blog posts and you
re too afraid to do it yourself? Hey, this may be a way to go. Crowdsourcing is a great way to help
move your business forward, while allowing you to pay attention to actually running it. You just want
to remember a few things: 1. You get what you ask for: The better you are about identifying exactly
what you re asking people to do, the better they ll be able to meet your criteria. Always offer more
information than you think they need, not less. Otherwise, you get back something completely
different than what you were hoping for. 2. You get what you pay for: While it s important to make
projects cost effective, don t be a Scrooge and expect someone to do a full day s work for $5. If you re
only paying five dollars, you re only going to get five dollars worth of work. 3. You get what you give:
Designers thrive on feedback and recognition. Make sure you re staying involved and giving them the
feedback they need. How has crowdsourcing worked for your business in the past? Any pleasant
surprises or horror stories you re willing to offer up? I d love to hear them. (Lisa Barone 2010)

Human Motion Capture
Human motion capture is being used for more and more things. It is being used in the clinical setting
to define problems in gait or other athletic movements. Motion capture is also being used in the field
of entertainment to animate movies and video games. We can track human movement through a
variety of mechanisms. The most common is to use cameras and reflective markers to track how the
person is completing a movement. There are downfalls within each of the ways to track movement.
For example, when using markers and cameras, each marker has to be seen at all times by at least two
cameras. Also, the markers need to be placed directly on the skin otherwise they can move causing
unnecessary data. And the placement of markers can take an unnecessarily extended amount of time to
position. The goal of this paper is to address different ways and downfalls of each way to capture
human motion. This paper will also address new possible ways to track human movement in a simple
and time efficient manner.
Marker Based Motion Capture
Gait analysis has been used previously as a diagnostic tool in relation to musculoskeletal diseases.
More recently, it has been accepted as helpful in the clinical setting when defining rehabilitation and
preventative practices. The purpose of gait analysis is to determine the cause or area of injury, to find
the incorrect movement.

The Patriot The movie, The Patriot, was released in the year 2000. It is a drama/action film that relates
to the American Revolutionary War. Although the plot of the movie is fictional there are many aspects
that relate to what happened in the war, but some have discrepancies. The Patriot is the story of a
South Carolina plantation owner, Benjamin Martin, who is played by Mel Gibson. It is more a story of
a family during the war then the war itself. When all of the men from Charleston gathered to the town
meeting to discuss whether they should join the war effort and separate with England or not, Martin
speaks of taxation without representation, which in fact was a major factor in the war. To me, this
proves that the movie tried to be as factual to history as possible. Originally, Martin ... Show more

They had already lost their mother; he was all they had left. When William Tavington, a ruthless
British Colonel, kills one of his sons and takes another prisoner, he is left with no choice but to fight
for the colonies freedom. Benjamin Martin s character is supposedly based on Francis Marion, who
was a heartless murderer. Martin uses guerilla warfare to stop the British from getting supplies and
attack outposts in order to slow General Charles Cornwallis from joining the British troops in the
North. Although the purpose of the movie is to entertain the audience, it can also be viewed as history.
It does follow historical events from the beginning of the Revolutionary War. However, many details
have been altered to create drama and action for the viewer s entertainment. One scene in the movie
that was created solely for the purpose of entertainment is when the British grouped many colonists
and locked them inside of a church that they then set on fire, burning them all alive. This never
occurred in history because something of such matter would have been printed in every history

Shining The Spotlight On Artificial Sweeteners
Rebecca Stacey
Professor Agatucci
Writing 122
9 June 2015 Shining the Spotlight on Artificial Sweeteners It has been said many times before, sugar
is bad and also sugar substitutes are bad but what are the real underlying factors that support these
claims? Going to the grocery store and always seeing a product that is advertised as low sugar or sugar
free due to the supplementation of various sugar substitutes, one may be curious to discover whether
or not sugar free options are a healthier alternative to their sugar counterparts. Arguments for both
sides of the issue are readily available via any popular diet magazine or public talk shows discussing
health and diet trends. The media has consistently portrayed the use of sugar substitutes as being
beneficial for dieting and low calorie lifestyles, and people are believing the unsupported claims by
these companies, in turn purchasing the first products they see on the shelves labeled sugar free
without any knowledge of what they are putting into their body and how it affects them. The question
then arises what are the experts actually saying regarding this issue? Do artificial sweeteners such as
sucralose, aspartame, etc, do more harm than good? While it would appear authorities have mixed
feelings regarding this issue, artificial sweeteners, despite having low to zero calories, do more harm
than good to your body. There are no proven benefits to sugar substitutes and many studies have
shown that

Differences Between The Neolithic And Early Bronze Age
Change is widespread throughout all time periods, especially when it comes to archaeological
artefacts. The Neolithic and Early Bronze age was an important part of Scottish archaeology. These
periods took place in between the c.4000 c.2000 BC. While these time periods came right after one
another, they are very different. Both the Neolithic and the Early Bronze Age archaeology in Scotland,
work together to advance the country while still showing differences that help archaeologist date
specific artefacts. Some essential differences between the two periods is their burial practices. The
Neolithic period is known to practice cremation while the Bronze Age practices beaker burial rituals.
The Neolithic period is also known as the new stone age. Because of this, the Neolithic period s
primary resource is stone. Many of the artefacts that have been excavated by archaeologist consist of
stone in some way or another. The Neolithic era worshiped their people with monuments. In the early
Neolithic, rectangular straight line monuments were the norm, but as time progressed circular
monuments became popular as well as cremating the deceased. However, the method of cremating
was far different. The Neolithic people liked did not burn the body into complete ashes like we do
today. This is proved in an excavation of the Dalladies, the cremated bones and material were just
scattered all over the burial cite. (Piggott, S. 1972. P. 36). Today, all that remains from a cremation are

Martin Luther s Theology Of The Cross
Furthermore, Luther s Theology of the cross helps us to see God incarnate, with us, Emmanuel, even
in the suffering and death of the crucified one, God s only son, Jesus. It is in this suffering that we
know that God is with us. In a very human way, God takes on the fate of the world, to destroy human
flesh through Jesus, the incarnation. God does change, suffer and die. It is God alone, and nothing we
do. God does all the heavy lifting for our sake, and it is a gift. Jesus gives us an example of someone
who loves us so deeply, that he is willing to lay down his life.

Superman And Batman And The Great Depression

U.S History Comics Arial Mcclanahan Superman and batman and the great depression
More than 70 years ago, the very first superheroes debuted in the dire times of the Great Depression
and the early years of World War II. Their names became legend Superman and Batman or as he was
then known, the Bat Man), Wonder Woman, Captain America and they re still with us today. A new
exhibit at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles celebrates these icons from the Golden Age of
Comic Books. Through a collection of rare original artwork and comics, the exhibit explores how a
group of mostly Jewish artists created the costumed heroes who came to symbolize the hopes of a
beleaguered nation. ln the 1930s, the American Dream had become a nightmare, and I think comic
books and superheroes in particular provided an escapist form of entertainment that allowed the
American public to go into a fantasy world where all the ills of the world were righted by these larger

than life heroes, says Erin Clancy, a curator at the Skirball. Guest curator Jerry Robinson not only
organized the exhibit, he s a part of it. The comic book pioneer created Batman s arch enemy, The
Joker, and named the caped crusader s sidekick Robin.
We were just emerging from the Depression, Robinson recalls. Superman started in 1938. Batman
started in 1939. So, we were just recovering. Robinson says the villains changed with the times. The

A Knight s Tale Essay
For my report, I chose to summarize how Brian Helgeland s movie A Knight s Tale (2001) draws its
medieval themes and story from Geoffrey Chaucer s The Canterbury Tales: The Knight s Tale .
Besides the nearly identical titles of these works and the moderately similar storyline, it can be further
proven that A Knight s Tale is an adaption of The Knight s Tale because Geoffrey Chaucer appears as
a character himself and a vital one at that in the movie. Furthermore, just to make certain that there is
no mistake among the viewers about who they are dealing with, Geoffrey Chaucer (Paul Bettany) even
refers to himself as a writer in the movie and points out his very first own work The Book of the
Duchess in disbelief when some peasants don t ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the movie, there are two men competing for the same woman, just as Arcite and Palamon did.
However, in the movie, it is William Thatcher (Heath Ledger) who competes with Count Adhemar
(Rufus Sewell) over Lady Jocelyn, where William (a squire) is pretending to be a knight so as to
compete in the jousting tournaments and Count Adhemar is the reigning world champion of jousting.
While Arcite and Palamon are imprisoned physically in a tower, William and Adhemar face less literal
imprisonments of their own: Adhemar gets called to battle so he has to take a hiatus from the jousting
circuit and trying to win over Lady Jocelyn, and William is continually trying to hide the fact that he is
a squire rather than a knight so as to compete and to meet Lady Jocelyn s standards. In the film, the
Black Prince of Wales Prince Edward has parallels to the wise and fair Duke Theseus. When William
is found out to be a squire rather than a knight, he is imprisoned and cannot compete in the jousting
world championships; however, Prince Edward and William had jousted in a tournament earlier in the
circuit (after Adhemar had backed down because of Edward s prince status), which Edward respected,
so he returned the favor by making William a knight so he could be exonerated and compete. Both
Duke Theseus and Prince Edward play mediator roles in their respective stories. Count Adhemar and
the newly knighted Sir William end up essentially jousting for Lady Jocelyn because Adhemar has
entered arrangements with Jocelyn s father to marry her even though she and William are very much
in love with each other. William ends up defeating Adhemar and seals his fate to love

Phos Research Paper
Partially hydrogenated oils have been used by manufacturers for years. The FDA has decided to
remove PHOs from all manufacturers due to extensive research into the effects of PHOs. Partially
hydrogenated oils have been determined not to be GRAS, generally recognized as safe (Center).
Although the FDA had decided that PHOs are unhealthy many sources say that fats are needed for
body functions. In high amounts fats are going to be bad for the body but, with any type of food that is
the case and it is the job of the consumer to watch their eating habits. PHOs have a purpose of why
manufacturers use them and even though they are said to lower cholesterol but, that s not the whole
truth. The FDA s decision that Partially Hydrogenated Oils are unsafe is another unnecessary health

Fatty acids in the oil then absorb some of the hydrogen and becomes more dense. If the manufacturer
were to fully hydrogenate the oil, it would become a solid, basically a fat. When the hydrogenation
process is stopped half way, this is when it becomes partially hydrogenated oil. PHO s are a butter
substitute and have the same consistency(Armstrong). What complete hydrogenation of fats does is
turn healthful unsaturated fats into fully saturated fats. This is the equivalent to regular, saturated,
animal fat and since this animal fat and complete hydrogenation is essentially the same this doesn t
work. The solution was partially hydrogenated oils so that some of the unsaturated molecules would
remain and the product would remain healthy ( The

Autochthony In Leif Enger s Peace Like A River
The story of American Literature, much like the journey of the Land family in Leif Enger s novel,
Peace Like a River, is a story of autochthony. But in both cases, that autochthony is permitted by some
stronger force. America has grown to be a uniquely autochthonous nation as a result of the profound
belief of her people in their exceptional nature. Simultaneously, the influence of other nations and
people is the catalyst for growth in America and American Literature throughout history. The Colonial
period of American Literature is laced strongly with religion and the establishment of a national
history. Both the Puritans and the Pilgrims lived their lives passionately devoted to living out the Bible
as they interpreted it, and found their identity deeply rooted in religion. The Puritans of the
Massachusetts Bay Colony, under the guidance of John Winthrop, were to serve as an example, a city
on a hill, and all of civilization was to take note. Throughout Peace Like a River, Reuben Land looks
upon Jeremiah s intense faith with the same reverence that Winthrop intended the world to look upon
his civilization with. Reuben, watching his father pace beyond the bounds of the truck bed, is
astonished when he does not fall, but instead continues walking on the hand of God (Enger 18).
During this moment, Reuben must have felt the same alarm and subsequent astonishment that those
watching Winthrop build his miniature empire felt. Both Winthrop and Jeremiah Land walked

Far From The Madding Crowd was set in the 1840s, at a time when women had very few rights. The
Married Women s Property Act was not brought in until the 1870s, which meant that all women s
earnings went to their husbands, and if they owned any property before marriage it would legally be
transferred to her husband upon matrimony. Divorce laws heavily favoured men and a divorced wife
could expect to lose any property she had brought into the marriage. When the act was introduced in

This quote shows her sense of being in control of her own destiny. She does not want to be owned by
a man.
The reader is intentionally given the clear impression that Bathsheba is a feminist at the point that she
takes over the farm from her uncle. In the 1840 s this was unheard of. One of the only reasons why
Bathsheba would have got the farm from her uncle after his death was because she had no brothers.
There were no men left in her family so it had to go to her. Bathsheba proves that she is worthy of the
farm because she manages to live as the mistress successfully. Gabriel found out about Bathsheba
being the mistress of the farm when he overheard a conversation between two workers.
On hearing these and other similar remarks a wild thought flashed into Gabriel s mind that they might
be speaking of Bathsheba… and the women alluded to seemed to be the mistress of some estate. P 47

National Debt Is Necessary For The Funding Of Federal...
National debt is necessary for the funding of federal programs. Government spending is not only a
focus of the United State s political system, but it affects one s personal choices and lifestyle. There is
a concern with where and why money is spent. A key aspect of government spending is allocated to
education. Education is fundamental in how one benefits society and the economy. The United States
education program is not only necessary for the success of the country, but it is in need of a more
efficient system with increased funding. Education is the foundation of a person s success and way of
life. Graduating from school is important not only for an individual, but it helps the local and national
economy. A study by the Alliance for Excellent Education shows that with higher graduation rates
among high school students, the economies of cities, states, and of the country would increase
(Rollins). Compared to the rest of the world, the United States spends a large amount of money on
education (U.S. Education). While many may think this sufficient, Professor Bruce Baker discusses
the correlation between supporting schools with federal funding and the success of students, When
schools have more money, they have greater opportunity to spend productively. When they don t, they
can t (ii, Baker). If students are to graduate and contribute to the boost of economies, education must
be the forefront of federal funding. The United States is spending what seems to be like

A Reflective Account Of The 30 Day Placement
A Reflective Account of the 30 Day Placement I was given my first placement in a residential care
home for the elderly located next to a busy main road in a small town. Established for over 25 years,
the home is owned and run by qualified nurses who specialise in looking after confused, elderly
residents. It can accommodate 32 service users for residential care and also provide respite care, day
care and dementia care. There are currently 18 full or part time care staff plus domiciliary workers
operating on a 12 hour shift system. I was the first student social worker they had ever given a
placement to so I felt like a bit of a guinea pig to start with. On questioning the staff it became
apparent that they had been wary of my imminent arrival and were unsure of what to make of me. I
found out that this was based on the stereotype of the social worker and in the words of one of the
carers social workers are trouble makers . I put them at rest by convincing them that I was there to
learn about all aspects of the care home and how it fitted in with all aspects of social care. At first I felt
like the carers were putting on a show for my benefit but it became apparent very quickly through
observations from distance that they were genuine in their roles. Prior to the placement I thought I
would be just an extra pair of hands in the care home or that I would be isolated from the day to day
routine as the sole student social worker in the home. I managed to overcome this by

History Vs. Hollywood Essay
Film makers use many historical events to spark up and idea for a movie. One historical event that is
commonly used is war. One advantage a film maker has when using war as a movie plot is that there is
already a lot of drama in war. This may seem like a good advantage for the film maker, however
focusing on all of the drama of war leaves much of the actual info. When watching a war movie, you
may feel like you have an understanding about the war, but when you really compare a war movie to
an actual war you find that there is a lot of factual information left out. One may ask why would
directors and film makers leave out the facts of war and focus on the drama? After reading The Faces

I read the section about the battles that took place during WWII. It brought to my minds that in real
life. There are more important things during a war than finding a private Ryan. War is a huge event
and the little things like finding a person to keep the family name going is too small to include in war
history. This is what separates the movies from the real life. Another difference is they don t show the
actual planning it takes to start an attack or the inelegance that is needed to set up the perfect defense
barrier to prevent the advancement of the enemy soldiers. A real battle can last days, weeks, months,
or years, compared to movie war that lasts not even a day and has one guy or one platoon take on the
entire other side. The casualties of real war is tremendous, rather than movies where you see almost
the same characters in the whole movie accomplishing some of the most intense tasks with only one or
two dying. Also, in movie war you don t see the other side s horror. You think all the opponents are
bad horrible people that deserve to die, when they are just soldiers doing their job and the only reason
we are fighting them is because of a bad leader or government. So in the movies every enemy
deserves to die and should be shown no mercy, but the actual thing about that is that the enemy is just
like any other soldier. And furthermore when the good guys lose a battle in a

Literary Analysis Of Theodore Dreiser s An American Tragedy
Theodore Dreiser s, An American Tragedy is a prime example of how social tensions between the rich
and the poor and the vicious need to rise to the top can lead to abandonment. The protagonist, Clyde
Griffiths is filled with the willingness to rise far above and looks down upon his peers. After being
represented and invited to see the luxurious ways of the rich Clyde decides to abandon loose threads
that can threaten his rise to the top. Clyde is easily influenced by others which later on leads to his

parents, Asa and Elvira Griffiths, who are religious people, have moved from city to city often having
difficulty providing food for their children. Even though the Griffiths have taught their children moral
values this has not stopped Clyde from being tempted to live like his peers. Clyde s first influential
encounter with people his age was when he started working at the Green Davidson as a bellhop where
he had become acquainted to fancy places such as restaurants. At this time he had become vicious in
making himself look good in order to fit in with his peers and became obsessed in dressing well and
following norms that people of his age were doing such as learning how to dance and going to social
events. Clyde now having been introduced to the luxurious ways became even more obsessed after
being introduced to his uncle Samuel Griffiths. Samuel Griffiths owns a Shirt and

Robert Edward Lee was born January 19, 1807 at Stratford in Westmoreland County. Continuing in
the military tradition of his father, in 1825 Lee entered West Point and graduated second in his class in
1829, without getting single demerit in his four years there. Serving several military positions in
Georgia, Virginia, New York, Texas, and Mexico. Over the next 23 years, his reputation as a strong
military leader increased in recognition and respectability, and in 1852 he was named superintendent
of West Point. From February of 1860 until February of 1861, for one whole year,, Lee commanded
the Department of Texas the largest number of troops he had ever commanded. Lee had to evaluate his
position as a Whig devoted to the Union and as a Virginian. At this point, he did not agree with the
political and economic arguments for Southern independence. Though, unfortunate as the choice was,
if pressed to choose between fighting for Virginia or for the Union, Lee realized the decision would be
simple. Lee s loyalties proved to be on the side of the South because of his family tradition in and
association with the state of Virginia.
Lee was born on a Stratford Hall Plantation in Virginia. The fifth child of Henry Light Horse Harry

Purpose: To persuade the general public to promote and inform smokers of the safer alternative;
electronic cigarettes.
Thesis statement: Trying to stop smoking can be the hardest thing a person can do. Couple that with
the fact that there are 101 ways to stop smoking, those that are not 100% dedicated to quitting can find
this a very daunting task. However, there is one way that can make the path to quitting clearer and

Background: We have all heard it 1,000 times. Smoking is bad for your health. It is one of the worst
things you can voluntarily do to your body. You re probably sitting there thinking to yourself... Great!
I get to listen to another lecture about how bad smoking is. And if you are like me, you have gotten
tired of hearing about it and watching commercials about it. It seems like it never goes away! But...
What are you doing about it?
D. Establish Credibility: I don t smoke. But, I have been around smokers about since I born. A lot of
my immediate family were smokers; my grandparents, and aunts and uncles, many of my friends; and
throughout my life I have constantly been exposed to it. I know from experience the implications that
it not only has on your health, but, also of the health of those around you.
E. Preview statement: Today I m not only going to be outlining a little bit about the age old topic of
smoking, but also a solution to help combat the health concerns with smoking, as well as furthering
the push to abolish smoking altogether.

The Virtual Intrusion Detection System
The Virtual Intrusion Detection System a traditional IDS is only an element in the security chain
architecture. It does not eliminate the need for protections to prevent attacks. The virtual intrusion
detection system (V IDS) is a disruptive idea for the security of cloud architecture. Virtual IDS is
software and sometimes hardware that captures cloud network and host activity data in reporting tools,
analyzes the data interactively, provides an automatic reaction (e.g., alarm) during an incident, and
after an incident routes the cloud data to a security channel defined at runtime. Figure 4.2: Secure

In the V IDS context, the module uses two different methods for analysis: The attack signature
represents the simplest way to analyze IDS data. It is like static packet filtering, which is similar to the
firewall rationale. Anomaly detection (heuristics) represents the most sophisticated technique, in
which heuristic patterns try to detect variations from historically normal operation. 4.6.2 Decision
module The decision module is part of the close chain control system that, using the data which has
arrived from the analysis module, makes decisions about the real time actions necessary to solve
anomalies related to network intrusions. This module implements the logic necessary to analyze
behaviors and makes decisions about the anomalies discovered. 4.6.3 Action module The action
module represents the actuator that solves the intrusion detection situation on a cloud domain. Merely
collecting and analyzing data accomplishes nothing. The V IDS uses the results from the analysis in
order to manage the cloud infrastructure on the basis of security. Most obviously, it also generates
alarms, reports and queries if the analysis indicates a dangerous condition. 4.6.4 Monitoring module
The monitoring module captures (continuously) processed data from previous events, such as
historical intrusion data, login attempts, and so on. Each event is 20 time stamped and

franchises in foreign countries the most important factor will be the local culture. The success of the
market share capture can only be done when a company has understood the cultural differences that
exist in other geographies. The cultural differences can be pertain to the social structures ,their
manners and the rituals and values. There are also differences in attitudes, languages and
communication patterns.
As the US franchises pitch for foreign lands, the structure of the organization should also change
(Shropshire et al., 1995).The search for global talent must go on and they have to make the sport well
known to seek new athletes and talented sportspersons. During their advance to other economies, they
should be open to their culture and custom along with their beliefs. They should be in a position obey
the rules and also design their gear for the various sports, with a respect the sportmanship.
The risk of these franchises from failing in foreign culture can be decreased with the help of effective
market research. This data mining will equip them with an understanding of the facts and about the
country s mentality towards sports. Thus they will also gain valuable information and this will help
them to design their innovative propositions.
2.The globalization forces should be dealt through various means when the sports frachinses goes

Essay on Discussion of the early pioneers of moving pictures
Topic : Discuss in detail how American filmmakers Edwin Porter and D.W Griffith built on early films
by the Lumiere brothers and George Melies. Use examples from the oeuvre of each filmmaker to
substantiate your argument.
This essay will outline an introduction to the premature years of motion pictures and developments
that helped shape cinema as we know it today. This paper will explore the roles of the early pioneers
and the extent to which their contributions shaped cinema. In particular, it will look at how E.S Porter
and D.W Griffith improved on the early years of cinema as result of influences from Louis and
Auguste Lumiere and George Melies. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The notion of filmmaking at this age was merely to document real life, and this novelty of seeing a
presentation of ?reality? captivated the audience of its era. However, these films showed movement
toward camera from right to left, which later became a standard technique for staging action for the
next few years (http://www.earlycinema.com/atoz/index.html). Thus, the Lumiere brothers? pioneered
not just the technical attributes of the camera but also its artistic attributes, creating a dialogue of
realism (Lumiere, 1895:302).
This novelty of cinema, and Lumiere brothers? short films fascinated a man named Melies, who was
later to further develop this medium. In 1896 Melies bought his first camera and began screening other
filmmakers? films but three months later he showed his very own first screenings. His first films were
clear cut just demonstrated life events and were one reel or shot usually about a minute long, ?
patterned after the short films of the Lumiere brothers?
(http://www.earlycinema.com/pioneers/melies_bio.html). In 1896, an incident transpired which has
since passed into film convention and changed the way Melies looked at cinematography. While
shooting a street scene, his camera jammed and after fixing it when he processed the film he was
struck by the effect such an incident had on the scene, objects suddenly appeared, disappeared or were
transformed into other objects

When our family grew to five our budget grew smaller in certain areas. With health care and
prescription costs growing, our budget is being stretched by the added doctor visits, medications, and
prescriptions. With Alternative Healthcare on the rise and our need for a healthier lifestyle and extra
budget, would it be beneficial for my family to change over to a natural household.
Purpose
The purpose of this report is to weigh the costs and benefits associated with alternative medicines and
healthcare and see how they compare with conventional or complementary medicine and health care.
Scope

There Will Come Soft Rains Analysis Essay
In the poem There Will Come Soft Rains , Sara Teasdale reveals the idea that humans are insignificant
compared to nature. In the first few lines, the author describes the beauty of spring, And frogs in the
pools singing at night / And wild plum trees in tremulous white (Teasdale, 3 4). Further on, Teasdale
continues to remark the beauty of nature and how humans have no affect on it. Concluding to the end
of the poem, it states, And Spring herself when she woke at dawn, / Would scarcely know that we
were gone (Teasdale, 11 12). Here the author explicitly states that even if all humankind were to go
extinct, it would have no affect on the general harmony of nature. Therefore expressing the idea that
humans are insignificant to nature. Ray

Analysis Of The Movie I Happened Upon An Indie Film...
This past summer, I happened upon an indie film actress (and more) with an intriguing story, and I
was quite ecstatic when she agreed to an interview. While my busy schedule has kept me from sharing
it until now, Dawn Noel is definitely a thriving actress to follow into the new year and beyond. When
we chatted, she told me about the inception of her career, her eventual turn toward acting and
producing, and her endeavors for the imminent future. RH: Dawn, it s great to be able to chat with
you, and when I was looking up your story, I noticed you started out as a dancer. How long have you
been dancing? DN: Well, I started out at the age of three, and I ve been dancing my whole life. I went
to the High School for Performing Arts in Philadelphia, and then I got a BFA at the University of the
Performing Arts in Philadelphia. Then I moved to New York, and I started out as a classical dancer
doing modern dance with various dance companies. Most notable were Philadelphia s Koresh Dance
Company, Ballet Hispanico and Elisa Monte Dance companies. Shortly thereafter, the NYC and
Metropolitan Opera Ballets hired me, and I slowly moved into doing Broadway shows. I was in The
Lion King, quickly followed by In The Heights and Fame. and then I went on to touring with musical
artists like Madonna and Jennifer Lopez With Kelly Rowland I knew I always wanted to make a
transition to becoming an actress, so I started building those credits while I was dancing. I did some

Cantigny Park Essay
Cantigny Park is an eye opening experience that provides visual aids which give a better
understanding of WWI and its significance to Robert R. McCormick. The McCormick family altered
the grounds of their home to become a public park to show the legacy that the McCormick family left
behind. Robert R. McCormick served in WWI, which had a great impact on his life that is shown
through the grounds of Cantigny Park. He served as the editor and publisher of the Chicago Tribune
for forty four years, at which he made it a media giant by adding it to television stations and putting it
on the radio. The mansion that the McCormick family occupied is a museum itself on the grounds,
with its extravagance and countless artifacts. While the actual museum on the grounds takes the public
back to the war, where it gives a better understanding of what the war was really like. The trip itself
was very well put together, but could have had some improvements to make the learning experience
even better. The Cantigny Park grounds is a memorable trip due to the better understanding one can
have of WWI and the personal touches added by Robert R. McCormick himself.
Robert R. McCormick served in the National Guard in 1915 and then in the First Infantry Division
during WWI. The war greatly impacted Mr. McCormick, where he stayed committed to the First
Infantry Division throughout his life as a veteran. He renamed the grounds of his home from being
Red Oaks Farm, after the oak trees that continue to

  • 2. Tonkin Incident Research Paper Was the Gulf of Tonkin incident really an incident or were the 2 attacks on the USS Maddox within reason? Thus the correct historical analogy may not be Nixon s secret air campaign and incursions into Cambodia, but the Tonkin Gulf incident the alleged pair of attacks by North Vietnamese naval forces against American destroyers that President Lyndon B. Johnson used to win public support and congressional approval for escalating the confrontation with North Vietnam. The government has ways to make information and secret operations disappear as if it never happened by making them nonexistent on paper. Is a secret operation or reconnaissance mission what the ship was doing? What was OPLAN 34A? Why did the PT (Torpedo) boats attack? Was the USS ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Codenamed Operations Plan (OPLAN) 34A, the activities were conceived and overseen by the Department of Defense, with the support of the Central Intelligence Agency, and carried out by the South Vietnamese Navy. Initial successes, however, were limited; numerous South Vietnamese raiders were captured, and OPLAN 34A units suffered heavy casualties. In July 1964, Lieutenant General William C. Westmoreland, commander of the U.S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, shifted the operation s tactics from commando attacks on land to shore bombardments using mortars, rockets, and recoilless rifles fired from South Vietnamese patrol boats. It is also notable that McNamara in this conversation clearly favors explaining to Congress the link between the incident and the OPLAN 34A activities. The naval battle between the destroyer USS Maddox and several North Vietnamese torpedo boats occurred in the immediate aftermath of a series of 34 A maritime raids on North Vietnamese coastal targets. • 3. Syntax In William Carlos Williams s The Red Wheelbarrow In his short poem The Red Wheelbarrow, William Carlos Williams uses enjambment to disrupt conventional syntax, encourage slow reading and close consideration of each word, and deconstruct images into their essential parts in order to establish a more vivid visualization of the world he presents. Enjambment is characterized by the incomplete syntax at the end of a line in poetry due to the lack of terminal punctuation. This allows for the meaning of a line to flow over to the next, creating a sense of disorder, ambiguity, and anticipation that is only satisfied by the continuation of the thought on the next line where the syntax is either complete or continued. By use of enjambment, Williams s The Red Wheelbarrow expands a single sentence of sixteen words over the course of eight lines. Deceptively simple, the poem describes a scene Williams observes in which a red wheelbarrow stands coated in rainwater next to chickens. But by writing this sentence in eight lines, Williams inserts space between each word, disrupting the reader s expectation of flow and forcing closer reading of each line and word that now carries a much heavier weight and meaning. Each word, separated from the others by means of enjambment, is a carefully chosen and thought provoking brushstroke in the painting Williams creates for the mind s eye. The first line simply reads so much depends, immediately creating a sense of tension that gives strength to the verb depends. On the next line, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Early Romans wanted to create a lasting republic, a government in which citizens rule themselves through elected representatives. A republic is a government in which citizens rule themselves through elected representatives. Americans liked the roman form of government but also knew that eventually the Roman republic became a dictatorship, a government in which one person rules with all authority. The Framers wanted to avoid the Roman s fate. They wanted to create a permanent government where the informed citizens ran their own government. Another historic document the Founders looked to was the Magna Carta. In 1215, many of the landowning gentry of England rebelled against the unpopular King John. In order to help restore peace the rebels forced the king to sign the Magna Carta. It placed limits on the power of the English king and made Parliament the ruling body in England. The English Bill of Rights (1689) was another document the Framers looked to. It gave the citizens of England certain rights such as freedom of speech and separation of powers. The word retreated characterizes an offensive defensive relationship between the Creature and the villagers. For this first civilian interaction, Shelley draws a stark contrast between the villagers preconception of the Creature and his true nonconfrontational nature: even though the Creature is bigger, stronger, and could probably counter their attacks, he chooses to retreat. At this point, the Creature does not know that his appearance leaves him vulnerable to unchecked prejudice, but a fundamental idea has been engrained in his mind: these humans are not his friends. Motion capture is also being used in the field of entertainment to animate movies and video games. We can track human movement through a variety of mechanisms. The most common is to use cameras and reflective markers to track how the person is completing a movement. There are downfalls within each of the ways to track movement. For example, when using markers and cameras, each marker has to be seen at all times by at least two cameras. Also, the markers need to be placed directly on the skin otherwise they can move causing unnecessary data. And the placement of markers can take an unnecessarily extended amount of time to position. The goal of this paper is to address different ways and downfalls of each way to capture human motion. Going to the grocery store and always seeing a product that is advertised as low sugar or sugar free due to the supplementation of various sugar substitutes, one may be curious to discover whether or not sugar free options are a healthier alternative to their sugar counterparts. Arguments for both sides of the issue are readily available via any popular diet magazine or public talk shows discussing health and diet trends. The Neolithic and Early Bronze age was an important part of Scottish archaeology. These periods took place in between the c.4000 c.2000 BC. While these time periods came right after one another, they are very different. Both the Neolithic and the Early Bronze Age archaeology in Scotland, work together to advance the country while still showing differences that help archaeologist date specific artefacts. Some essential differences between the two periods is their burial practices. The Neolithic period is known to practice cremation while the Bronze Age practices beaker burial rituals. In the early Neolithic, rectangular straight line monuments were the norm, but as time progressed circular monuments became popular as well as cremating the deceased. However, the method of cremating was far different. The Neolithic people liked did not burn the body into complete ashes like we do today. Martin Luther s Theology Of The Cross Furthermore, Luther s Theology of the cross helps us to see God incarnate, with us, Emmanuel, even in the suffering and death of the crucified one, God s only son, Jesus. It is in this suffering that we know that God is with us. In a very human way, God takes on the fate of the world, to destroy human flesh through Jesus, the incarnation. God does change, suffer and die. It is God alone, and nothing we do. God does all the heavy lifting for our sake, and it is a gift. Superman And Batman And The Great Depression 3 6 page essasy U.S History Comics Arial Mcclanahan Superman and batman and the great depression More than 70 years ago, the very first superheroes debuted in the dire times of the Great Depression and the early years of World War II. Their names became legend Superman and Batman or as he was then known, the Bat Man), Wonder Woman, Captain America and they re still with us today. A new exhibit at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles celebrates these icons from the Golden Age of Comic Books. Through a collection of rare original artwork and comics, the exhibit explores how a group of mostly Jewish artists created the costumed heroes who came to symbolize the hopes of a beleaguered nation. ln the 1930s, the American Dream had become a nightmare, and I think comic books and superheroes in particular provided an escapist form of entertainment that allowed the American public to go into a fantasy world where all the ills of the world were righted by these larger ‐ than life heroes, says Erin Clancy, a curator at the Skirball. Guest curator Jerry Robinson not only organized the exhibit, he s a part of it. The comic book pioneer created Batman s arch enemy, The Joker, and named the caped crusader s sidekick Robin. • 28. A Knight s Tale Essay For my report, I chose to summarize how Brian Helgeland s movie A Knight s Tale (2001) draws its medieval themes and story from Geoffrey Chaucer s The Canterbury Tales: The Knight s Tale . Besides the nearly identical titles of these works and the moderately similar storyline, it can be further proven that A Knight s Tale is an adaption of The Knight s Tale because Geoffrey Chaucer appears as a character himself and a vital one at that in the movie. Furthermore, just to make certain that there is no mistake among the viewers about who they are dealing with, Geoffrey Chaucer (Paul Bettany) even refers to himself as a writer in the movie and points out his very first own work The Book of the Duchess in disbelief when some peasants don t ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the movie, there are two men competing for the same woman, just as Arcite and Palamon did. However, in the movie, it is William Thatcher (Heath Ledger) who competes with Count Adhemar (Rufus Sewell) over Lady Jocelyn, where William (a squire) is pretending to be a knight so as to compete in the jousting tournaments and Count Adhemar is the reigning world champion of jousting. While Arcite and Palamon are imprisoned physically in a tower, William and Adhemar face less literal imprisonments of their own: Adhemar gets called to battle so he has to take a hiatus from the jousting circuit and trying to win over Lady Jocelyn, and William is continually trying to hide the fact that he is a squire rather than a knight so as to compete and to meet Lady Jocelyn s standards. In the film, the Black Prince of Wales Prince Edward has parallels to the wise and fair Duke Theseus. When William is found out to be a squire rather than a knight, he is imprisoned and cannot compete in the jousting world championships; however, Prince Edward and William had jousted in a tournament earlier in the circuit (after Adhemar had backed down because of Edward s prince status), which Edward respected, so he returned the favor by making William a knight so he could be exonerated and compete. Both Duke Theseus and Prince Edward play mediator roles in their respective stories. Count Adhemar and the newly knighted Sir William end up essentially jousting for Lady Jocelyn because Adhemar has entered arrangements with Jocelyn s father to marry her even though she and William are very much in love with each other. • 30. Autochthony In Leif Enger s Peace Like A River The story of American Literature, much like the journey of the Land family in Leif Enger s novel, Peace Like a River, is a story of autochthony. But in both cases, that autochthony is permitted by some stronger force. America has grown to be a uniquely autochthonous nation as a result of the profound belief of her people in their exceptional nature. Simultaneously, the influence of other nations and people is the catalyst for growth in America and American Literature throughout history. The Colonial period of American Literature is laced strongly with religion and the establishment of a national history. Both the Puritans and the Pilgrims lived their lives passionately devoted to living out the Bible as they interpreted it, and found their identity deeply rooted in religion. The Puritans of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, under the guidance of John Winthrop, were to serve as an example, a city on a hill, and all of civilization was to take note. Throughout Peace Like a River, Reuben Land looks upon Jeremiah s intense faith with the same reverence that Winthrop intended the world to look upon his civilization with. Reuben, watching his father pace beyond the bounds of the truck bed, is astonished when he does not fall, but instead continues walking on the hand of God (Enger 18). Government spending is not only a focus of the United State s political system, but it affects one s personal choices and lifestyle. There is a concern with where and why money is spent. A key aspect of government spending is allocated to education. Education is fundamental in how one benefits society and the economy. The United States education program is not only necessary for the success of the country, but it is in need of a more efficient system with increased funding. Education is the foundation of a person s success and way of life. Graduating from school is important not only for an individual, but it helps the local and national economy. A study by the Alliance for Excellent Education shows that with higher graduation rates among high school students, the economies of cities, states, and of the country would increase (Rollins). Compared to the rest of the world, the United States spends a large amount of money on education (U.S. Education). While many may think this sufficient, Professor Bruce Baker discusses the correlation between supporting schools with federal funding and the success of students, When schools have more money, they have greater opportunity to spend productively. When they don t, they can t (ii, Baker). If students are to graduate and contribute to the boost of economies, education must be the forefront of federal funding. One advantage a film maker has when using war as a movie plot is that there is already a lot of drama in war. This may seem like a good advantage for the film maker, however focusing on all of the drama of war leaves much of the actual info. When watching a war movie, you may feel like you have an understanding about the war, but when you really compare a war movie to an actual war you find that there is a lot of factual information left out.
