Parallel Support Vector Machines Is A Supervised Machine...
Parallel Support Vector Machine
Junfeng Wu Junming Chen May 6, 2016
1 INTRODUCTION
Support vector machines is a supervised machine learning alogrithom used for classification. The
problem could be written : minimize 1 |w |2 2 yi((w,xi)+b)−1≥0 where w is a linear combination of the
training data: n w = αi k(xi ) i=1 this could be further written in a dual form[5]: min 1αTQα−eTα α2
0≤αi ≤C, yTα=0,
∀i ≤n where Q is the kernel matrix.
This dual form is a quadratic programming problem with linear constraints. A solver to this problem
like SMO or IPM reuquires a time complexity of O(n3) and space complexity of O(n2), which makes
SVM hard to scale. In our final project we implemented two parallel quadratic programming solvers
for SVM and implemented a matrix factorization algorithm to improve the performance. Later we
evaluated our implementation.

2 SMO SOLVER IN PARALLEL
SMO is one of the most common ways to solve quadratic programming problem. SMO is a iterative
alogrithm. In each iteration, the alogorithm optimize one pair of Lagrange multipliers (α1,α2) that
could best accelerate the convergence util the lagrange multipliers meet the convergence condition.
2.1 SELECTING AND UPDATING α PAIR
We select alpha1 and alpha2 that make the largest progress towards the global maximum value on
each side of the hyper plane according to the heuristic function. The heuristic function is as follow: n f
(i) = aj yj k(xj ,xi )− yi j=1 The selection of α pair is as

Exploring the Film, The Outsiders Essay
In films, film makers make deliberate use of certain techniques to influence views to make a certain
viewpoint. In the film The Outsiders , the director Francis Ford Coppola believes nothing gold can
stay when it comes to teenagers. He believes that the strength and beauty in teenagers can never stay
concrete because it is ruined by adulthood. In the film Coppola shows and represents two groups, the
socs and the greasers . Soc is pronounced like society, and means just that: money, nice cars, nice
homes and a bright future. Greasers are the poor kids from the bad side of town with no future and no
real hope. Coppola explores how cultural assumptions underpin the ways in which teenagers are
represented in films. There are three key ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ponyboy makes Johnny aware of the poem the movie is based on which states that nothing gold can
stay, just like their valued teenage years. In the town which has a rich and a poor side, the whistle of
the local train that passes though it is only heard from the where the greasers live. The recurrence of
the train whistle allows the views to know when the greasers are in town. Coppola uses motifs and
repetition in the plot to enforce his interpretation of teenagers. At various stages in the film, Coppola
explores common assumptions about the Greasers then challengers them using the plot. Ponyboy
Curtis is a reader ( Gone with the Wind ) which goes against all common assumptions made about
him. In the scene when PonyBoy Curtis and Johnny Cade go looking for Dallas Winston at a party,
they come to find him sleeping and that is not how Greasers are meant to be represented. Dallas also
cares and helps his fellow Greasers Johnny and Ponyboy escape from the town after violence broke
out between the two groups. As the older one, he gave then money and advice on how to stay safe. In
addition Coppola makes this clear using vocabulary. Vocabulary is just one of the aspects Coppola
uses to make his representations clear. The first half of the film shows the Greasers at their worst and
the vocabulary just adds to this characteristic. In the film, the

Competition Is The Cornerstone Of Capitalism
Competition is the cornerstone of capitalism. It creates rivalry among businesses to produce quality
goods and services at competitive prices. This gives consumers a better sense of variety when making
purchases. Competition in its purest form creates small buyers and sellers none of which are too large
to negatively affect the market as a whole. Competitive markets can be dated back to ancient times
when merchants competed in foreign trade. In the 19th century economists considered competition as
a natural phenomenon in which growth of an operation was fueled by supply and demand in a free
market economy. They also believed that supply and demand worked better in a laissez faire type
environment. This was possible through freedom to trade, transparent knowledge of market
conditions, no government restrictions on trade, and access to buyers and sellers. These conditions
prevented any buyer or seller to significantly affect the market price of a single commodity. After the
mid 1800 s, limitations to compete became evident during the industrial revolution. Corporations
achieved manufacturing capabilities that would surpass their competitors and would allow them to fix
prices and squeeze out their rivals. Eventually some businesses became so large that they controlled
enough market share to deceptively manipulate prices in their industry. This activity created an
atmosphere for President Theodore Roosevelt to launch his famous trust busting campaigns. The era
of antitrust

Evaluation Of Water Related Climate Change Adaptation...
The aim of this research is to develop a set of indicators for monitoring and evaluation of water related
climate change adaptation interventions at the local community level in Thai Binh province. This will
help authorities at high levels, NGO officers, local residents and other beneficiaries as they can
evaluate the effectiveness of water related interventions. The robust indicators will help to adjust the
adaptation targets for given times, to ensure the accountability to stakeholders, to provide evidence for
the effects of intervention, to motivate all partners, to fundraise, and to reveal the shortcomings in the
implementation of water related adaptation interventions {Hobson, 2014 #328}.
This research will apply the sustainable livelihood framework and the local community participation
to develop the indicators. The sustainable livelihood framework approach will consider
comprehensively and scientifically the livelihood components of local residents. The authorities at the
higher levels, therefore, can more easily listen to and understand the local voices and have much more
respect and corporation with the local residents. In addition, the local community participation
methods will reveal the local residents perspectives of their needs, priorities and visions. The local
residents will also be able to understand the effects of adaptation interventions, to gain the skills in
observation of changes and to improve their adaptive capacity to adverse impacts of climate

Charles De Gaulle Research Paper
Charles de Gaulle was born on November twenty second, eighteen ninety in Lille, France. His mother
was Jeanne Maillot de Gaulle and his father was Henri de Gaulle. He had three brothers, Xavier de
Gaulle, Pierre de Gaulle, Jaques de Gaulle, and one sister, Marie Agnès de Gaulle
From a young age, he wanted to be in the military. He took his childhood passion and joined the
military academy of St. Cyr. He did well in school, and graduated thirteenth in his class of around 200.
Upon leaving St. Cyr, de Gaulle joined the thirty third infantry regiment where he met Philippe Pétain,
the colonel of the regiment and future marshal of France.
De Gaulle s first taste of real combat would come in World War one. De Gaulle gained recognition by
crawling out with his men into no mans land to eavesdrop on the enemy. For the information he had
discovered, he was given the croix de guerre (Cross of War), a french military decoration. He was
soon promoted to captain.

England to continue in the struggle of ridding France of German occupation. While in England, de
Gaulle took to radio to get his message of a free France out to the people and gradually drew in

Sharia Law And Islamic Law
Sharia, also called Sharia Law or Islamic Law, is a religious law forming part of the Islamic tradition,
and it is derived from the religious precepts of Islam. Despite of the fact that Sharia oppresses women
and restrict their human rights, a lot of Muslims still think of Sharia very positively. In order to know
why, one needs to know and understand the basic law concepts and go specifically into the
characteristics and factors or the Sharia Law. Before going onto the Sharia, one needs to know and
understand the law concepts. First, all societies and religions contain a legal system. Unless any law or
legal system, any organization would encounter conflicts and arguments. Second, law acts as system
of conflict resolution. Whenever ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sharia, also called Sharia Law or Islamic Law, is a religious law forming part of the Islamic tradition,
and it came from the religious precepts of Islam. Sharia is often portrayed as a medieval legal system
used by religious zealots to oppress women and deny human rights for Muslims and non Muslims
alike. (Esposito, 40) Islamic law in countries such as Saudi Arabia, Iran, Sudan, and the Taliban s
Afghanistan has required to restrict women s rights.
Regardless of this negative characteristic of Sharia, why do so many Muslims regard Sharia so
positively and think of it as central to their faith? One of the reasons is that Sharia has functioned as a
positive source of guidance, a law whose principles and values have provided a moral compass for
individuals and society. (Esposito, 41)
The reason they want Sharia so much is much easier to understand if one realizes that many Muslims
across the world concerns much about how modern secularism has challenged faith and family values.
Muslims see secularism as undermining personal and public morality, weakening marriage as an
institution, and leading to rampant divorce, sexual promiscuity, dysfunctional families, and alcohol
and drug abuse. (Esposito, 41)
Now we can go specifically into Sharia Law, which is the foundation of religious politics. There are
two categories of Sharia law that we can break down to. They are

Commentary On The Book Blue Bloods By Melissa De La Cruz
Where to begin? Well, to start things off, Blue Bloods is the first book in the Blue Blood Series written
by Melissa de la Cruz. The series itself is realistic fiction as the setting in this series takes place in
New York City. As for the main characters in this book, Schuyler Van Alen, a sophomore at a private
school in New York City who has experienced several changes when she turned 15. Oliver Hazard
Perry is a human that is assigned as a Human Conduit to Schuyler and was aware that Blue Bloods
exist, despite being a mortal. Benjamin Jack Force is a Blue Blood and is described as the most
popular at the school. His twin sister, Madeleine Mimi Force, is rather harsh against Schuyler. At first,
it was just jealousy at first, but when Jack started to show interest, she begins to hate her for real. To

Despite the trouble I had to understand what s going on, I would recommend it to a very minimum
number of people. From what I read, it has vampires, so anyone who enjoys novels with vampires
would enjoy to read this novel. But I would also recommend this to people who would like realistic
fantasy. It has a nice feeling to read a novel made up of fictional things while adding realistic places
such as New York City. To my belief, the ideal readership Melissa is aiming for is for readers who like
realistic fantasy. When you think about it, fictional beings in the realistic world is something
interesting to read, at least for me. Fantasy has been an inspiration for me and I m sure others would
feel the same as well. I wish it would ve been more easy for me to comprehend what s going on to
truly enjoy it, but alas, it didn t for me. As for what to read next, I have been putting thought about
reading a novel from a different series and from a different genre. If I truly want to enjoy reading more
novels, I need to be able to read different books from different genres. I can t be picky on my

My Family
My life was stereotypical. A mom, a dad, a brother, and a dog. A nuclear family was what it was.
House with a white picket fence. My days consisted of being in my fantasy world. Where stuffed
animals were pets and they had their own little families. Where I spent hours finding creepy crawlies
in the woods. Where watching my dad s favorite show was considered quality time. But that fence was
only an illusion. Like many other families, that white fence kept in more than just the family dog. It
contained the secrets and lies. It hid the reputation of an unfaithful father. It created an illusion of
unity within our family.
Tears streamed down my red stained face. Wetting my cheeks then falling off the peak of my chin onto
the collar of my favorite pajamas. The small drops created translucent circles on the material. I sat
wondering the fate of my family. Questioning everything that had just happened. My small mind
trying to put together the pieces of the puzzle but only ending up with a picture that didn t make sense.
My lungs gasped for air. Only small amounts made their way through each shaken breath. My eye
became foggy from the next wave of tears. The constant thumping in my head proceeded. Thump.
Thump. Thump. I wish it would stop. I wish my tears would stop. Just everything needs to stop. Stop.
From the eyes of another parent my display of sadness may have looked like a tantrum of a spoiled
brat and not the empty display of a child who feels lost. Questions pierced my

Why You Might Like Having A Picket Fence
Why You Might Like Having A Picket Fence If you re looking for an attractive fence that doesn t
block the view beyond your property, a picket fence is probably ideal. It s more visually appealing
than a chain link fence, and it s a great way to keep people out of your yard and keep your kids and
dogs inside. Here are a few reasons a picket fence could be a good choice for your property. It s
Suitable For The Front Yard If you live in the city or in a neighborhood with an HOA, you probably
can t put some fences in your front yard. There might be regulations on the height of the fence allowed
as well as the fencing material used. Picket fences are traditional front yard fences. The pickets can be
made in a variety of heights, so you can put in a low fence if necessary, and besides the height, the
fence will blend in perfectly with the taller picket fence that surrounds the back of your home. A front
yard picket fence is a good way to keep neighborhood kids out of your flowers while adding a homey
look to your property. The Pickets Eliminate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If you have a home with traditional architecture, a white picket fence could be the perfect complement
that gives your home a welcoming, cozy feeling. It s a reminder of days gone by and of simpler times.
In addition to providing security and property boundaries, a picket fence is an attractive landscaping
feature that gives your property personality. When you think about a white picket fence, you may
think of days spent scraping and painting to keep the fence looking fresh. You can avoid all that work
if you buy a fence made of vinyl. You can go with wood if you want a traditional material, but if you
want a picket fence you can have installed and then not worry about maintaining, then vinyl is the way
to go. All you have to do to keep it looking good is wash it occasionally with a hose or power

Big Fish Quotes
Big Fish produced by Tim Burton consist of much spiritual significance. For example, one might think
the fish was a symbol of Christianity, because of the Jesus fish that we often see on bumper stickers,
but there is one true spiritual significance. The one true spiritual significance that sticks out the most is
the Christ like figure. Edward Bloom, the main character represents the Christ like figure in this film.
Like Jesus, Edward Bloom is a storyteller who tells the stories of his father. Storytelling is a strong
trait that is used in every conversation today. In the film, a quote says A man tells stories so many
times that he becomes the stories. They live on after him and he becomes immortal. essentially this

percent of participants should be able to record at least two health complications caused by

The key stakeholders of education include traditional four year non profit universities/colleges and for
profit colleges, state and federal government funding agencies, students and parents, and employers of
students who graduate college. The main alignment between non profit universities/colleges and for
profit colleges revolve around their desire for an increase in student quality, increase in faculty quality,
increase in student population, increase in prestige, and thus consequently an increase in revenues. All
types of colleges are trying to increase their endowment by raising tuition charges, admitting more

in debt, and receive their college education. Most students usually decide to take the loan because of
the policy of employers. Employers of students who graduate college align with non profit colleges,
for profit colleges, and government funding agencies with the idea of having a higher number of
students attending colleges. These employers want to hire people who are highly skilled in their
respective fields and want people who can apply their skills well in a corporate setting. These
employer institute policies such as requiring a minimum degree to apply for a job position and

Messing With The Forces Of Order In Macbeth Essay
In the classic play Macbeth, by William Shakespeare, the once honorable soldier Macbeth, becomes
corrupt as he murders the King of Scotland to take the throne. This newfound evilness causes him to
mess with fate and is eventually killed by Macduff. The play Macbeth shows how messing with the
forces of order will lead to your demise.
In Macbeth, Shakespeare shows that messing with the forces of order will lead to your demise through
Macbeth. Macbeth loses the trust of the people who were once loyal to him, after he killed Duncan.
He murders Duncan so that he could be king; he messed with the natural order so he can be king
which causes him to lose people s trust, such as Macduff. This is the start of his demise. In Act 3

Hazel As A Leader In Watership Down By Richard Adams

a leader means having confidence, bravery, being trusted and worthiness. Everyday Hazel shows that
he is smart and confident by leading the rabbits to a new place to find food or a new shelter. In the
book Watership Down a few rabbits from the sandleford warren go on a mission because Fiver, the
smallest rabbit in the warren, says he can sense that something bad is coming. Hazel believes Fiver
and they go to find a new warren. While they are looking for a new warren they come across the

He is also always up for a risk even if it means that he is risking himself but he will not let others get

says something bad is going to happen soon so a couple of the rabbits leave and they gather more
rabbits along the way. Fiver and I will be leaving the warren tonight, he said deliberately. I don t know
exactly where we shall go, but we ll take anyone who is willing to come with us (page 14). Hazel is
strong and brave and is willing to go anywhere to help his friends from not being harmed by anything
that they may come across. Being brave really helps the leader be a better leader than they already are
because they are confident enough to do what is needed although it may scare them. Although Hazel
got injured because of the men that came to kill and hurt the rabbits, he still powered through the pain
and was a great leader even while he was hurt. Hazel was strong even when he go hurt from running
away from the men and falling into a hole that he couldn t get out of. When Hazel was missing
because he was in the woods and injured his friends were looking for him because they need him
around for them to be safe. Hazel is great at doing what is needed like finding food to survive and
helping others get where they need to be. Hazel is always super supportive, for example when they
were at the new warren one day the went outside and they found an injured bird and Hazel demanded
that they help him and make him get better. Hazel told all of the other rabbits to find food for the bird

Often society s winners , both historical and contemporary, can be characterized by the common
ability to effectively manager and exploit change situations. Individuals, societies, nations and
enterprises who have at some time been at the forefront of commercial and/or technological expansion
have achieved domination, or at least competitive advantage, by being innovative in thought and/or
action. They have been both enterprising and entrepreneurial. It is said that management and change
are synonymous; it is impossible to undertake a journey, for in many respects that is what change is,
without first addressing the purpose of the trip, the route you wish to travel and with whom. Managing
change is about handling the complexities of travel. It is about evaluating, planning and implementing
operational, tactical and strategic journeys about always ensuring that the journey is worthwhile and
the destination is relevant. The Industrial Revolution, which developed in Europe between 1750 and
1880, accelerated the rate of change to an extent never previously thought possible. Other economies
followed and the rate of change has never declined; indeed, many would claim it has now accelerated
out of control. The spear and sword gave way to the gun; the scribe to the printing press; manpower to
the steam engine of James Watt; the horse and cart to the combustion engine; the typewriter to the

Emily Dickinson s Poem Success Is Counted Sweetest
Emily Dickinson s poem Success is Counted Sweetest displays the theme that in order to understand
the taste of success, one s knowledge of the taste of failure must exceed that of success. Dickinson s
poem Success is Counted Sweetest deals with how one attains success and only those who fail more
often than they succeed can truly understand the beauty of success. To portray this, Dickinson uses
imagery, or the use of the senses to express her theme, within this writing. Specifically, Dickinson
describes fathoming success as [t]o comprehend a nectar / Requires sorest need (3 4). The sense she
appeals to in these lines is taste when Dickinson compares the comprehension of nectar to the sweet

With reference to the levels and spheres of corporate power discussed in the chapter, Rockefeller and

successful men in history. Economic power is the ability of the corporation to influence events,
activities, and people by the virtue of control over resources, particularly property. The power of
Standard Oil changed society by leading the economy to economic growth. The Standard Oil business

Standard Oil business sparked the development in other industries, such as the automobile industry.

Ancient Egyptian Religion and Worldview
1) Ancient Egyptian religion and worldview was simultaneously both extraordinarily simplistic and
extremely complicated.
The king s essential unique title, the Horus name, broadcasted that he was a part of the god Horus, a
sky god who was portrayed as a half man half falcon. Different aliases were added to this one,
remarkably Son of Re (the sun god) and Perfect God, both presented in the fourth administration (c.
2575 2465 bce), when the incredible pyramids were developed. The name Son of Re put the ruler in a
nearby, however, impoverished connection with the heading figure in the pantheon. This showed that
the ruler had the status of a minor divinity, for which he was consummated through promotion to his
office; it confined the degree of his godlikeness and divided him from full divinity.
In his halfway position between mankind and the divine beings, the king could accept the most
excessive praise, and in a few ways, was more unmistakable than any single god. In death he tried to
gain admittance to the afterlife, however couldn t get away from the human setting. Despite the fact
that illustrious funerary icons contrasted in sort from different tombs and were unfathomably larger,
they were excessively looted and vandalized, and few regal funeral home religions were dependable.
Especially after the old Kingdom, a few rulers, mainly Amenhotep III (1390 53 bce), Ramses II (1279

Stereotypes In I Want To Be Miss America
Both of these excerpts come from a new title called representation, and this is accurately shown in
both excerpts. It fits into this category, because it shows how Americans think of beauty as a
representation to your mentality . We see in I Want to be Miss America that Americans have a
predicament in the way we see women in terms of beauty and capability . The author of this excerpt
describes the ambition of young a girl , which is adjusting to an American lifestyle , to be Miss

The United States and the International Criminal Court (ICC)
The United States and the International Criminal Court (ICC)
Statement of Purpose
This paper will clearly lay out the Unites States concerns with the International Criminal Court and
will attempt to resolve them. I will then argue that no country has the right to be above international
law, including the United States and that it is in the best interest of America and the world community
for the united states to join the efforts of the ICC and sign the Rome Statute.
Introduction to the ICC
In the prospect of an international criminal court lies the promise of universal justice. That is the
simple and soaring hope of this vision. We are close to its realization. We will do our part to see it
through till the end. We ask you...to do ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Finally, in July of 1998 the international community met in Rome to finalize the draft statute, which is
now referred to as the Rome Statute of the ICC. The primary goals of the International Criminal Court
are to achieve justice for all, to end impunity, to help end conflicts, to remedy the deficiencies of ad
hoc tribunals, to take over when national criminal justice institutions are unwilling or unable to act,
and to deter future war criminals.
For nearly half a century almost as long as the United Nations has been in existence the General
Assembly has recognized the need to establish such a court to prosecute and punish persons
responsible for crimes such as genocide. Many thought... that the horrors of the Second World War the
camps, the cruelty, the exterminations, the Holocaust could never happen again. And yet they have. In
Cambodia, in Bosnia and Herzegovina, in Rwanda. Our time this decade even has shown us that man

Unauthorized Immigration
Currently, the problem of unauthorized immigration divides Congress along political party lines.
Many politicians who are anti immigrant and pro immigrant seek for ways by which they can impact
their political base. As research shows, politicians and anti immigrant groups take advantage of the
mass media in order to persuade their constituency. The media uses quantitative data analysis of the
unauthorized population to create a media spectacle, by the portrayal of unauthorized immigrants as
criminals (Correa Cabrera 2012). This media spectacle serves to exploit the fears of many Americans
who oppose legalization. As a result, many people feel encouraged to contact their local
representatives to stand against the legalization of the unauthorized population.
Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965
First, it is important to present a historical context of unauthorized immigration to understand the
current dilemma. In order to change discriminatory immigration policies, the Immigration and
Nationality Act of 1965 was signed into law. After the 1965 act, immigration from Asia and Latin
America increased dramatically. However, for Latin America countries, the legislation restricted the
number of legal entries into the United States. Since the bill allowed for visas through family
reunification, the number of immigrants from Latin American countries increased, thus exhausting the
available visas. The result of these events created chain migration which caused unauthorized

Rhetorical Analysis Mccarthy The Road
Nikita Patel
COMP 111.B12
02/28/2017
The language of the Road By McCarthy is scant yet poetic and morally inspiring. The text is
composed not of chapters but of discrete, punctuated paragraphs that mirror the movements of the
father and son on their journey. McCarthy s writing style reflects sparseness in that he chooses to write
in fragments and he keeps the father s and son s dialogue very choppy. Authors style of narrating this
story is very scrappy and sparse, which describes the infertile and miserable land through which the
man and boy are traveling. In the book we noticed, McCarthy makes less use of quotation and
apostrophes. There are no brakes through dialogues. Because this is a post apocalyptic story, the
exception of these punctuation basics might help as a way of author to show that in this new world,
fragments of the old world such as materialistic objects and humanity exists in scarce amount.
McCarthy s narrative voice is powerful and completely shapes the stories he tells. The story begins
with the man and boy making their journey along the road. The story is set in a post apocalyptic
world, date and place are unnamed. One can assume it is somewhere in America, most of the South,
because the man tells the boy that they re walking the state roads (43). Neither the man nor the boy is

the man s thoughts, memories, and perceptions. Then it will be a general discussion, but brief. It
employs a third person narration that is generally omniscient that allows the author a great deal of
freedom, and he can move from one character to another. He can change to more objective description

My Reflection on the Blended Learning Experience I have been extremely happy with my experiences
thus far here at Framingham State University and the blended learning experience. Having graduated
from an accelerated nursing program only seven and a half years ago I can recall very vividly the pain
and torturous experiences of having to sit in class for eight hours per day, two days a week. As an
adult learner I can vividly recall multiple conversations with fellow adult learners about how class
work felt like it was filler. As a group we provided follow up feedback to the institution that they
consider additional technologies and recourses that could fulfill the educational requirement but allow
the student to learn at home. We frequently commented on how the class work could have been easily
cut down to 2 hours of meaty material vs. 8 hours of fluff. However, I personally enjoyed the
camaraderie and networking of meeting my cohorts. Here at Framingham I feel I found a program that
has given me the best of both worlds. So far the balance of course work and module work at home
have complemented the experience wonderfully. I have met some

Campus Tours
I have had a total of 4 university tours. The university that I liked was GCU and NAU. I loved the
NAU campus, it was so beautiful. I really liked how the camps looked after they remodeled mostly all
the buildings. It just made the place look at more modern and I liked how that looks. Another reason
why liked NAU was because the weather up north is nice and cool. The appearance of the school
would have to be my favorite part of the NAU tour. During the tour we walked around the whole
campus and were told where the important places were. There was very interesting, the walk in sky
dome. The walk in sky dome is a public place open to everyone,
I also visited GCU and I went on tour to see their medical program. I got to see cadavers that students
use to study. The students would show us parts of the bodies and would tell us what a specific part of

Ukraine-Russia Gas Disputes
Ukraine and Russia Gas Conflict
Abstract
In the recent years, the relations between Ukraine and Russia have been hostile. Russia is the largest
producer of gas while Ukraine is the largest importer of the same commodity from Russia. Gas fro
Russia to the EU countries, east and southern Europe passes through the Ukrainian territory and
Russia has to pay transit fee. It is this issue of the supply and prices of gas that precipitated a very big
conflict between the two countries and the impact was felt allover Europe. In this paper, the historical
background of the issue, the current sate of the conflict, the solutions to the conflict; the future of gas
supply and the effects of the 2009 conflict to Europe will be addressed.

This forced Ukrainian companies to make illegal gas diversion from transit pipelines. In 1994, an
intergovernmental agreement was made on the gas issue and it included a clause that stated that
Gazprom would participate in the process of privatization of gas enterprises and others in other sectors
(Nichol and Steven 1 6). It was agreed that Gazprom would take a 51 percent stake in the pipeline
infrastructure. In 1995, the two countries agreed to come up with a cooperative company that they
would call Gaztransit so as to operate the Ukrainian gas assets in exchange for a debt write off.
Neither of the agreements was implemented, in fact, Ukraine adopted a law called the Verkhovna
Rada of Ukraine that disallowed the privatization of any gas and oil asset in Ukraine (Brzezinski and
Brzezins 150).
Three years later, Gazprom and Naftohaz established various contracts where Gazprom would pay for
transit with a certain volume of gas creating a link involving gas prices and tariffs for transit.
Nonetheless, this contract never resolved any of the debt disputes and the siphoning of gas from the
pipelines continued. The debt concern was resolved on the fourth of October in the year 2001 when
the additional measures that centered on the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine was signed by an
intergovernmental agreement. By the year 2005, in excess of 70 percent of Gazprom revenue came
form the sale of gas that used to pass via Ukraine. The gas trading

Physical And Chemical Changes Lab Report
Title: Physical and Chemical Changes
Purpose: Recognize and distinguish between chemical and physical changes
Apparatus and Material: evaporating dish, Bunsen burner, wood splint, test tubes, micro spatula,

Piece of paper, NaCl (sodium chloride), water, 6 M HCL (hydrochloric acid), 0.1 M AgNO3 (silver
nitrate), Mg ribbon, 6 M HCL (hydrochloric acid), CuSO4 5 H2O, 0.50g iron fillings, 0.50g of

Heated crystals change color from blue to white; water vapor forms on the walls of the test tube.
Addition of water turns the heated crystals from white back to dark blue, almost teal color.
5. Sulfur appears as yellow powder; iron is dark brown powder; mixed together, they look like dirt.
Iron becomes attracted to the magnet, following it if it s close enough; sulfur does not. Magnet can be
used to separate the two mixtures.
6. On heating the iron sulfur mixture, the sulfur melts and reacts with the iron exothermically to first
evaporate into a yellow gas, then form a reddish orange, solidified substance that glows . The
substance releases an unpleasant odor of rotten eggs. The iron on the bottom turns black and does not
react with a magnet. The glowing substance turns out to be a soft solid when probed.
7. Zinc is a silver solid with a light mass. Addition of zinc metal to copper sulfate solution results in an
exothermic reaction that produces a brown reddish precipitate (copper). Zinc becomes coated with the
copper precipitate, thus becoming dark.
Conclusions and data:
1. a) tearing paper physical change; retaining of properties, no new substances created
b) burning paper chemical change, gas and heat given off (evidence of chemical reaction)
c) dissolving NaCl physical change; solution formed, but individual properties retained; separation
possible by distillation.
d) mixing NaCl and AgNO3 chemical change; white precipitate, or

Essay on The Ever Changing Concept of Health
With the dominance of medicine over the past two hundred years many historical health concepts have
gone through various changes. The definition of health is dependent on one s perspective, be it lay,
professional or from influences of specific cultures or social ideals and health policies of a particular
time or place (Fleming Parker 2012, p.30, Naidoo Wills 2000).
An exploration through history will reflect on the health philosophies of the ancient Greeks and

including a brief insight into the renaissance. Subsequently, a discussion of health concepts of the past

The Greek scholar Hippocrates (c.460BC c.370BC), defined the humoral conception of health, [the
Four Humours], with the balance of these being responsible for health, interacting together with
lifestyle and environment, including individual constitution, clean air, diet and clean water. He noted
in his writings, regarding the workers and slaves, that neglect of diet affected their health, yet, work
was not considered an influencing factor on humoral balance (Tountas 2009, p.186 187, Fleming
Parker 2012, p.28, Turner 2000, p.13, Krieger, pp.43 44, Noviik and morrow, 2008, p.5). Others such
as Empedocles, Aristotle and later Galen extended Hippocratic humoral theory to link other elements
(Hays 2009, pp.9 13). No matter which variation, these theories were an attempt to rationalise
individual incidents of sickness and the differences in health status in the populace in relation to
underlying principles and environmental exposures (Krieger, p.46). According to Krieger (2011, p.47)
Greek politics had influence stating not only nature but politics informed the conceptualization of
balance in Greek humoral theory .
Tountas (2009, p.187) noted that ancient Greek physicians were itinerant craftsmen, earning their
reputation for skill from the successes of previous visits (Veith 1980, p.532). The diversity of their
practice included leech craft, magic and what is known today as allied health professions including
dietetics, nutrition, occupational therapy,

Drug Abuse in the NFL What is the definition of drugs? Is it the simple explanation of a substance we
consume that is alien to our bodies, for better or worse? Or is it much more complicated than that?
Many would agree that people use them as an escape from reality, a way to hide their pain in life, or a
way to deal with stress. People who use illegal drugs for their own benefit, whether it s for stress
release or for performance enhancement, are drug abusers. In today s society drug abuse is very

In recent months leading up to now, there have been quite a few cases of players abusing drugs, which
have led the NFL to consider changes to the policy. There are a handful of specific areas that have
been revised recently; these include HGH
Testing, Appeals, DUI Discipline, PED Discipline, Marijuana Threshold, and Marijuana
Discipline (DUI and PED discipline has been ramped up, and marijuana policy is more lax). The
NFL wanted to ease up on the punishments given out on marijuana abuse, and focus on cracking down
on DUI s and PED s. The punishments given are varied by what offense the player commits. For one
of the most popular of drugs, marijuana, a first time offender will be placed in a substance abuse
program without any suspension. A second offense leads to a two game fine. Each additional violation
leads to a four game fine, a four game suspension, and then a 10 game suspension. So, a player can
test positive for marijuana three times without getting suspended (DUI and PED discipline has been
ramped up, and marijuana policy is more lax). With DUI s however, the league has become stricter. In
the past, a first time offender was not suspended. Today you get a two game ban for your first
violation. Second time offenders get an 8 game suspension and aggravating circumstances can
lengthen the suspension. (DUI and PED discipline has been ramped up, and marijuana policy is more

The participants from the community were between 16 and 80 years old. The researcher ensured to
include a balanced group that covered gender, ethnicity and socio economic status. Employment status
was not a variable used in this study. The researcher used ten jurisdictions nationwide to help ensure
coverage of the majority of subcultures within the U.S. population. There were three large police
departments, four medium police departments, and three small police departments. The community
population corresponded to the size of the department. Each jurisdiction included poor, lower class,
middle class and upper class respondents. Other found research studies have only focused on
individual jurisdictions and communities or country compared to country (Schuck Rosenbaum, 2005).
Those were either too narrow or too broad for the intent of this research project.
Research Methods
The research involved self completion questionnaires covering the experiences of police officers and
community members within the ten jurisdictions researched. Furthermore, it included rural and urban
locations and the target population were those people who had any type of interaction with the police.
It was a cost effective way to obtain a large sample base in a reasonable amount of time. In order to
appeal to the entire population, city officials would have to agree to place the questionnaires on the
city and police department websites with electronic submission as an option. This

Descriptive Essay On A Walk In The Park
A Walk in the Park A ways away from a town that I call home, I found a happy place. I often find
myself walking through the park by myself. The beautiful trees, the way the yellow and red leaves
crumple under my feet every step I take. When the flowers bloom and how it s the most spectacular
sight you could ever imagine seeing, all the different colors that appear. When you breathe in and you
get this smell of purity, you feel free and alive. Sometimes I like to sit on the old wooden bench where
the bench frame is a little rusted, and I get rid of my thoughts and my eyes search the sky. In the
winter the icy breeze makes me shiver, and the cold air I take in, is like sitting in front of an air
conditioner and breathing in. Some mornings the sun beams across the sky, which is not quite blue
yet, but the sun has almost fully risen. When the wind blows, it grazes over the blades of grass. Some
days I just stand and take a deep breath in and I can taste the spring. When summer comes around, and
the bees are buzzing, and the hot sun beats on the back of my neck, I lay on the soft grass and listen, to
the birds chirping a beautiful song, and the kids playing in the park. The sky is the bluest view in
sight. Walking through the trail full of mud and leaves always made me think about my life. It was
always there when I needed to walk and get things off my mind. Looking around watching the leaves
fall off tree after tree flying like butterflies, all different colors. When they stopped, they immediately
died and they were not coming back alive again. Piled leaves filled up under trees and children ran and
jumped on them like they were pillows. These trees tripled the height of humans with numerous
branches holding hundreds of leaves. While walking the river flows and it is such a beautiful view
with the sun shining right off of it. The ducks and little birds chirping and floating through the smooth
water puts a joy to my face. I found a rest area with a bench and by it was a fountain. The ripple of
water and the singing that the birds formed made it peaceful to sit there and study the fountain. Just
appreciating the little things in life and realizing what all I have and have overcome is what the park

Fetal DNA Testing
Cell free fetal DNA testing is a relatively new technique used to screen for genetic disorders in a
general obstetrical population. This method is proving to be the most sensitive among all existing
standard screening methods in detecting Down syndrome, which is the most prevalent genetic disorder
in United States. Beside the accuracy, the cffDNA test is noninvasive, it yields results early in
pregnancy, and it is safe to the mother and fetus. Furthermore, when used as a primary screening
method, it has proven to significantly reduce reliance on more invasive diagnostic procedures.
Therefore, the cell free fetal DNA testing should become the main screening option in obstetrics in
order to protect the wellbeing of the pregnant mother and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If cffDNA testing was used as a primary screening method, and if all pregnant women with positive
test results would undergo the recommended diagnostic test to confirm the result, there would be a
89% reduction in the number of diagnostic invasive procedures being done (Bianchi et al,. 2014. P.
806). The same percentage of pregnant women would not have to suffer from devastating
psychosocial harm resulting from the same reasons. This significant percentage clearly summarizes
the superiority of cffDNA testing over other screening

American Tsunami Are We Next
American s Tsunami, Are we Next?
The word tsunami comes from a Japanese word meaning Long harbor waives . Tsunami is much
known and very common in Japan because thousands of Japanese have been killed and some suffered
in recent centuries. Tsunami waves generally speaking cause a lot of damages such as, killing people,
destroying building, and costing million of dollars. Moreover, a tsunami is a series of great sea waves
caused by an underwater earthquake, landslide, or volcanic eruption. The 2004 Indian Ocean
earthquake that is located on epicenter off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, is actually one of the
worst disasters in the history of Indian Ocean that generated by the most powerful 9.0 magnitude
earthquake. An aggressive ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Tsunami have waves can be hundreds of kilometers long and it is huge, flat and so destructive. The
Cascadia subduction zone is much closer to the land than Indian Ocean fault line, and a Tsunami could
strike in this area so fast, and thus, the people living between the cost of northern California and
Vankopper Canada would be in danger within 15 minutes. Some experts believe that American s
Tsunami can be overdue. Therefore, we have to be ready and prepared for fast evacuation.
Unlike the Indian Ocean, the United States already have early warning systems in place, monitoring
the pacific for any Tsunamis coming, evacuation roads are equipped in all cost hazards area less than
40 feet above the sea levels, and modern building are built to stand earthquake. However, the Tsunami
that may hit the U.S is very different and more deadly waves than the one authority have been
preparing for.
The destruction of Asian Tsunami shakes the world. The scale of devastation was worse than anyone
imagine possible, thousands of people are dead and the whole city was damaged by giant waves that
hit country after country, and there were no early warning signs prior to the Indian Ocean earthquake.
The 2004 Tsunami first hits was at Tailand, then Sreilanka, then India was next (around the bay of
Bangual), then next was Maldives, and then six hours after the quake, the Tsunami reaches the cost of
Africa. In addition, based on what we saw on the movie, Scientists says that if there is one

Beer Novembert Law Lab Report
Using the Beer Lambert Law, it can be interpreted that variation of the concentration in relation to the
constant and the path length of the cuvette will be the sole factor in changing the absorption rate of a
solution, since the length of the cuvette remains 1 cm throughout the duration of the experiment. A
calibration curve that compares the values for the absorbances and the concentrations of the yellow
and blue dye can be found in figures 1 and 2 respectively.
Figure 1. Shows the calibration curve for the absorption relative to the concentration (M) of the yellow
dye
Figure 2. Shows the calibration curve for the absorption relative to the concentration (M) of the blue
dye

As with the yellow dye, it was observed that there was no connection to be made between the
absorption and the wavelength. Nevertheless, it was identified that the statistics we received regarding
our wavelength did not emulate that which was found with many of the other groups during the
experiment. Our wavelength remained consistent throughout the dilution of the substance, while
others found that the wavelength decreased as did the concentration of their solution. This brings up
the question of whether diluting a substance will affect the wavelength at which it will reach its peak
absorption. It has already been concluded that concentration and absorption are inversely proportional,
but the relationship the wavelength is intended to have is not addresses. As one dilutes a solution, the
overall volume of water present increases. But, as water is clear, it does not have a position on the
color wheel, and a direct estimation of the wavelength at which it reaches its peak wavelength cannot
be determined based on current data. However, as we were the only ones that obtained a consistent
wavelength regardless of the concentration, it can inferred that there was likely some type of error.
Initial thoughts lead to it the most likely source being systematic error with the UV VIS spectrometer,
as the only possible source of personal error that could have lead to these results would be

Research Paper On One Thousand Cranes By Eleanor Coerr
One thousand cranes, one wish; we all have heard of that. Well it started with the story Sadako and
1,000 cranes by Eleanor Coerr. This story is about a girl who got exposed to nuclear radiation. While
she was in the hospital, her friend visited her and brought an origami crane. Her friend told her that the
crane is a symbol of health and if she make 1,000 paper cranes, she will get better. Unfortunately, she
failed, but in the process, she inspired many people, including me, voila here s a jar of 1000 cranes.
Origami is mysterious because a piece of paper can turn into anything the imagination can dream of.

Whenever I get frustrated or need a break, I make origami. The things I make, I felt like I give life to it
and my problems too. I also wanted to use my origami to at least cheer up someone s day. Paper is a
mysterious thing that you can use to create anything within your imagination. Let s recap the main
points: Origami is more common now that paper is cheaper. The 3 main types are action, modular and
wet folding origami, and you make a flower bouquet and give it to someone. In addition, it helps
soothe the mind unless you were frustrated with how to fold it right. There are many tutorials on
YouTube if you want to learn about making any types of origami. You might fail the first time, but that
is okay. With lots of practice and patience, you can make the things you want that your imagination

Effective treatment of infections depends on selecting the source, site, complete medical history, also,
conduct a physical assessment to identify the signs and symptoms consistent with the current

infection should be put into consideration (Arcangelo Peterson, 2013). The purpose of this paper is to
describe the categories of antimicrobial agents, also, description of the differences between viral and
bacterial infections will be reviewed. In addition, explain why proper identification of viral and
bacterial infections is the key to selecting the proper antimicrobial agent. Categories of Antimicrobial

from a high dosage but rarely (Arcangelo Peterson, 2013). Sulfonamides are used to treat

The Pros And Cons Of Fiscal Decentralization
Cost effectiveness
The idea of fiscal decentralization injecting competition among local governments has an added
advantage of making local officials pursue customer driven investments which are more likely to meet
expectations of local people and patronage of services. When local service delivery meet local people
expectations, they tend to pay for services and even honor their tax obligations without much coercion
because they even appear more willing to do so (Briscoe and Garn 1995, Litvack Seddon, 1999).
Additionally, if what is being supplied meets local demand and associated with the necessary openness
or cost recovery, local people and groups have a higher tendency of demanding accountability, closely
monitoring local government activities which will reinforce the corruption reduction theme discussed
previously. Local monitoring and demand side of accountability help to reduce information
asymmetries and corruption tendencies which may have potential to weaken both allocative efficiency
and cost recovery. This demonstrates each of the themes are closely interrelated and not mutually
exclusive.

tendering of district budget for a subsequent year. What has become known as Composite budgeting

expenditure of the numerous departments and agencies that fall under the territorial space of particular

Stonewall Riots And The Gay Rights Movement
In 2016 President Obama named the Stonewall Inn as the first National monument to LGBTQIA
(Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Questioning, Asexual, Intersex) rights. In history classes, we learned
that movements can lead to progression to break down and change constitutional law, and the mindset
of society. We hear about the civil rights movement, women s rights and even the labor movement; but
seldom do we hear about the gay rights movement. Many people say that the LGBTQIA community
has been fighting since 1912 or WWII, but all can agree that the Stonewall riots started gay liberation
and changed the LGBTQ community forever.
At 1:20 A.M. on a Saturday, June 28, 1969, police raided a gay bar called the Stonewall Inn, in

Like a lot of bars in the area, the Stonewall Inn was operated without a liquor license and was a
seducement to the gay community for the latest drugs, and its remote entry. It also catered to lesbians,
but the bar predominantly consisted of younger gay males, transgender and drag queens. Due to the
allure of Stonewall Inn; Inspector Pine and Detective Smythe of the New York City Police department,
made it their mission to shut it down like they did several other mafia run gay bars in Greenwich. Pine
and Smythe devised a plan to gain access to the bar and arrest as many people as possible. Pine did not
want any tip offs for the raid, so he planned accordingly; Pine thought it would be smart to draft a few
men from anti gay support groups and two undercover policewomen from a neighboring precinct.
They would enter acting as gay men and women, start mingling with bar patrons and then leave the
bar and regroup with Pine and Smythe and begin the raid. The raid began at 1:20 in the morning on
June 28, 1969. Pine pounded on the entrance and said, Police! We re taking the place! Anthony Vera

imagine anything at all.
This past summer, I, along with my mother and father, travelled to St. Jude Children s Research
Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. My mom had been invited to participate in the St. Jude For Life
Study because when she was around six to eight years old, she had a form of leukemia called Acute
Lymphoblastic Leukemia. This particular study is to help all present and future St. Jude patients and
help to research for a cure. While there, I saw first hand how cancer can affect a family. You can just

Saving the Bluefin Tuna Essay
The allusive bluefin tuna is one of the largest, fastest and highly sought after fish in the wild sea. The
Bluefin tuna can weigh over half a ton, grow to over four metres in length, and dive to depths of 1,000
metres. They can reach speeds of 70 miles an hour and even raise their body temperature far above
that of the surrounding water in order to traverse arctic waters. They are among the most ambitiously
migratory of all fish, with some tagged bluefin being tracked swimming from North American to
European waters several times a year. The bluefin tuna is unique, a perfectly adapted products of
evolution. They are also dangerously close to becoming extinct (Brown). Today, the bluefin tuna has
been fished out by 97 percent from pre fishing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Driven by such high prices, many fishermen, chefs and business owners depend on the bluefin tuna
industry for a way to support their lives. Respectively so, without sustainable fishing practices and
stricter regulations for the bluefin tuna, neither Japan, nor the rest of the world will even have the
choice on whether or not eating and fishing bluefin tuna should be an option (Crockett).
Although bluefin tuna does provide food and livelihoods for many people, they are more than just
seafood. The bluefin tuna is a top predator in the marine food chain, maintaining an important balance
in the ocean environment (Walsh). Author Brian Walsh writes,
[Scientist Amanda Nickson from The Pew Charitable Trusts] has recommended, echoed by many
other environmental groups and scientists, that the bluefin tuna fishery should be suspended, at least
until there s more effective management that might prevent the overfishing of the bluefin tuna
(Walsh).
In a recent assessment done by the International Scientific Committee for bluefin tuna, released in
January 2013, found that bluefin spawning stocks, the key measure of adults that can reproduce, have
plummeted by about three quarters over the past 15 years. It s estimated that the bluefin tuna has
dwindled to just 3.6 percent of its original population once found in the fifties. More than 90 percent
of blue fin tuna being fished out from the sea today are juveniles between the ages of 0 and 3. (Walsh)

Should Softball Players Wear Face Masks In Softball A Safe...
Should softball players wear face masks? Is softball a safe sport? While softball is one of high schools
safest sports according to momsteam.com, more and more players are getting hurt and here s why.
Many players are getting line drives to the head, and other parts of their body. They say they should
have been wearing a face mask while playing defense. Players of fastpitch softball need to wear a face
mask because players and pitchers are having more injuries each year, without one you are increasing
risks for injuries that could potentionally lead to your end in a career of softball. Girls are starting to
wear a face masks at a young age teaches young girls that are wearing a face mask is safe. Young girls
think it is cool to wear face masks and that it is fun to wear different colored masks. Missouri softball
pitchers in high school are now required to wear a face mask while pitching (Eads). Little girls are
now being taught to never play without one. Tournaments and rec leagues are making a face mask rule
now for pitchers and corners. Little girls do not have to worry about getting hit in the face because
they are wearing them all of the time. The good thing about young girls wearing face masks is they
will know when you need to wear one and when you do not. Having girls wear face masks at an age
younger than twelve is absolutely wonderful. It is wonderful because they are being taught to wear it
no matter if you are practicing or playing a live game. It helps girls

  • 2. Parallel Support Vector Machines Is A Supervised Machine... Parallel Support Vector Machine Junfeng Wu Junming Chen May 6, 2016 1 INTRODUCTION Support vector machines is a supervised machine learning alogrithom used for classification. The problem could be written : minimize 1 |w |2 2 yi((w,xi)+b)−1≥0 where w is a linear combination of the training data: n w = αi k(xi ) i=1 this could be further written in a dual form[5]: min 1αTQα−eTα α2 0≤αi ≤C, yTα=0, ∀i ≤n where Q is the kernel matrix. This dual form is a quadratic programming problem with linear constraints. A solver to this problem like SMO or IPM reuquires a time complexity of O(n3) and space complexity of O(n2), which makes SVM hard to scale. In our final project we implemented two parallel quadratic programming solvers for SVM and implemented a matrix factorization algorithm to improve the performance. Later we evaluated our implementation. 1 i =1,...,l, 2 SMO SOLVER IN PARALLEL SMO is one of the most common ways to solve quadratic programming problem. SMO is a iterative alogrithm. In each iteration, the alogorithm optimize one pair of Lagrange multipliers (α1,α2) that could best accelerate the convergence util the lagrange multipliers meet the convergence condition. 2.1 SELECTING AND UPDATING α PAIR We select alpha1 and alpha2 that make the largest progress towards the global maximum value on each side of the hyper plane according to the heuristic function. The heuristic function is as follow: n f (i) = aj yj k(xj ,xi )− yi j=1 The selection of α pair is as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Exploring the Film, The Outsiders Essay In films, film makers make deliberate use of certain techniques to influence views to make a certain viewpoint. In the film The Outsiders , the director Francis Ford Coppola believes nothing gold can stay when it comes to teenagers. He believes that the strength and beauty in teenagers can never stay concrete because it is ruined by adulthood. In the film Coppola shows and represents two groups, the socs and the greasers . Soc is pronounced like society, and means just that: money, nice cars, nice homes and a bright future. Greasers are the poor kids from the bad side of town with no future and no real hope. Coppola explores how cultural assumptions underpin the ways in which teenagers are represented in films. There are three key ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ponyboy makes Johnny aware of the poem the movie is based on which states that nothing gold can stay, just like their valued teenage years. In the town which has a rich and a poor side, the whistle of the local train that passes though it is only heard from the where the greasers live. The recurrence of the train whistle allows the views to know when the greasers are in town. Coppola uses motifs and repetition in the plot to enforce his interpretation of teenagers. At various stages in the film, Coppola explores common assumptions about the Greasers then challengers them using the plot. Ponyboy Curtis is a reader ( Gone with the Wind ) which goes against all common assumptions made about him. In the scene when PonyBoy Curtis and Johnny Cade go looking for Dallas Winston at a party, they come to find him sleeping and that is not how Greasers are meant to be represented. Dallas also cares and helps his fellow Greasers Johnny and Ponyboy escape from the town after violence broke out between the two groups. As the older one, he gave then money and advice on how to stay safe. In addition Coppola makes this clear using vocabulary. Vocabulary is just one of the aspects Coppola uses to make his representations clear. The first half of the film shows the Greasers at their worst and the vocabulary just adds to this characteristic. In the film, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Competition Is The Cornerstone Of Capitalism Competition is the cornerstone of capitalism. It creates rivalry among businesses to produce quality goods and services at competitive prices. This gives consumers a better sense of variety when making purchases. Competition in its purest form creates small buyers and sellers none of which are too large to negatively affect the market as a whole. Competitive markets can be dated back to ancient times when merchants competed in foreign trade. In the 19th century economists considered competition as a natural phenomenon in which growth of an operation was fueled by supply and demand in a free market economy. They also believed that supply and demand worked better in a laissez faire type environment. This was possible through freedom to trade, transparent knowledge of market conditions, no government restrictions on trade, and access to buyers and sellers. These conditions prevented any buyer or seller to significantly affect the market price of a single commodity. After the mid 1800 s, limitations to compete became evident during the industrial revolution. Corporations achieved manufacturing capabilities that would surpass their competitors and would allow them to fix prices and squeeze out their rivals. Eventually some businesses became so large that they controlled enough market share to deceptively manipulate prices in their industry. This activity created an atmosphere for President Theodore Roosevelt to launch his famous trust busting campaigns. The era of antitrust ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Evaluation Of Water Related Climate Change Adaptation... The aim of this research is to develop a set of indicators for monitoring and evaluation of water related climate change adaptation interventions at the local community level in Thai Binh province. This will help authorities at high levels, NGO officers, local residents and other beneficiaries as they can evaluate the effectiveness of water related interventions. The robust indicators will help to adjust the adaptation targets for given times, to ensure the accountability to stakeholders, to provide evidence for the effects of intervention, to motivate all partners, to fundraise, and to reveal the shortcomings in the implementation of water related adaptation interventions {Hobson, 2014 #328}. This research will apply the sustainable livelihood framework and the local community participation to develop the indicators. The sustainable livelihood framework approach will consider comprehensively and scientifically the livelihood components of local residents. The authorities at the higher levels, therefore, can more easily listen to and understand the local voices and have much more respect and corporation with the local residents. In addition, the local community participation methods will reveal the local residents perspectives of their needs, priorities and visions. The local residents will also be able to understand the effects of adaptation interventions, to gain the skills in observation of changes and to improve their adaptive capacity to adverse impacts of climate ... Sharia, also called Sharia Law or Islamic Law, is a religious law forming part of the Islamic tradition, and it came from the religious precepts of Islam. Sharia is often portrayed as a medieval legal system used by religious zealots to oppress women and deny human rights for Muslims and non Muslims alike. (Esposito, 40) Islamic law in countries such as Saudi Arabia, Iran, Sudan, and the Taliban s Afghanistan has required to restrict women s rights. Regardless of this negative characteristic of Sharia, why do so many Muslims regard Sharia so positively and think of it as central to their faith? One of the reasons is that Sharia has functioned as a positive source of guidance, a law whose principles and values have provided a moral compass for individuals and society. (Esposito, 41) The reason they want Sharia so much is much easier to understand if one realizes that many Muslims across the world concerns much about how modern secularism has challenged faith and family values. Muslims see secularism as undermining personal and public morality, weakening marriage as an institution, and leading to rampant divorce, sexual promiscuity, dysfunctional families, and alcohol and drug abuse. (Esposito, 41) Now we can go specifically into Sharia Law, which is the foundation of religious politics. There are two categories of Sharia law that we can break down to. They are ... It has a nice feeling to read a novel made up of fictional things while adding realistic places such as New York City. Where stuffed animals were pets and they had their own little families. Where I spent hours finding creepy crawlies in the woods. Where watching my dad s favorite show was considered quality time. But that fence was only an illusion. Like many other families, that white fence kept in more than just the family dog. It contained the secrets and lies. It hid the reputation of an unfaithful father. It created an illusion of unity within our family. Tears streamed down my red stained face. Wetting my cheeks then falling off the peak of my chin onto the collar of my favorite pajamas. The small drops created translucent circles on the material. I sat wondering the fate of my family. Questioning everything that had just happened. My small mind trying to put together the pieces of the puzzle but only ending up with a picture that didn t make sense. My lungs gasped for air. Only small amounts made their way through each shaken breath. My eye became foggy from the next wave of tears. The constant thumping in my head proceeded. Thump. Thump. Thump. I wish it would stop. Why You Might Like Having A Picket Fence Why You Might Like Having A Picket Fence If you re looking for an attractive fence that doesn t block the view beyond your property, a picket fence is probably ideal. It s more visually appealing than a chain link fence, and it s a great way to keep people out of your yard and keep your kids and dogs inside. Here are a few reasons a picket fence could be a good choice for your property. It s Suitable For The Front Yard If you live in the city or in a neighborhood with an HOA, you probably can t put some fences in your front yard. There might be regulations on the height of the fence allowed as well as the fencing material used. Picket fences are traditional front yard fences. The pickets can be made in a variety of heights, so you can put in a low fence if necessary, and besides the height, the fence will blend in perfectly with the taller picket fence that surrounds the back of your home. • 17. Hazel As A Leader In Watership Down By Richard Adams In the book Watership Down by Richard Adams, Hazel proves in many ways that he is a leader. Being a leader means having confidence, bravery, being trusted and worthiness. Everyday Hazel shows that he is smart and confident by leading the rabbits to a new place to find food or a new shelter. In the book Watership Down a few rabbits from the sandleford warren go on a mission because Fiver, the smallest rabbit in the warren, says he can sense that something bad is coming. Hazel believes Fiver and they go to find a new warren. While they are looking for a new warren they come across the efrafa, (another warren of rabbits that is not liked very much) and a few more rabbits who end up joining them. He is always going to be confident by going someplace where he doesn t know what he is going to find. They left the original warren because Fiver says he can see into the future, he says something bad is going to happen soon so a couple of the rabbits leave and they gather more rabbits along the way. Fiver and I will be leaving the warren tonight, he said deliberately. I don t know exactly where we shall go, but we ll take anyone who is willing to come with us (page 14). Hazel is strong and brave and is willing to go anywhere to help his friends from not being harmed by anything that they may come across. Being brave really helps the leader be a better leader than they already are because they are confident enough to do what is needed although it may scare them. Although Hazel got injured because of the men that came to kill and hurt the rabbits, he still powered through the pain and was a great leader even while he was hurt. Hazel was strong even when he go hurt from running away from the men and falling into a hole that he couldn t get out of. When Hazel was missing because he was in the woods and injured his friends were looking for him because they need him around for them to be safe. Hazel is great at doing what is needed like finding food to survive and helping others get where they need to be. Hazel is always super supportive, for example when they were at the new warren one day the went outside and they found an injured bird and Hazel demanded that they help him and make him get better. Hazel told all of the other rabbits to find food for the bird Kehaar. I believe it s starving, said Hazel. We d better feed it. Bigwig, go and get some worms or something. Often society s winners , both historical and contemporary, can be characterized by the common ability to effectively manager and exploit change situations. Individuals, societies, nations and enterprises who have at some time been at the forefront of commercial and/or technological expansion have achieved domination, or at least competitive advantage, by being innovative in thought and/or action. They have been both enterprising and entrepreneurial. It is said that management and change are synonymous; it is impossible to undertake a journey, for in many respects that is what change is, without first addressing the purpose of the trip, the route you wish to travel and with whom. Managing change is about handling the complexities of travel. It is about evaluating, planning and implementing operational, tactical and strategic journeys about always ensuring that the journey is worthwhile and the destination is relevant. The Industrial Revolution, which developed in Europe between 1750 and 1880, accelerated the rate of change to an extent never previously thought possible. Other economies followed and the rate of change has never declined; indeed, many would claim it has now accelerated out of control. The spear and sword gave way to the gun; the scribe to the printing press; manpower to the steam engine of James Watt; the horse and cart to the combustion engine; the typewriter to the word processor; and so the list goes on. 3 MBA H4010 ... Emily Dickinson s Poem Success Is Counted Sweetest Emily Dickinson s poem Success is Counted Sweetest displays the theme that in order to understand the taste of success, one s knowledge of the taste of failure must exceed that of success. To portray this, Dickinson uses imagery, or the use of the senses to express her theme, within this writing. How Did The Levels And Spheres Of Standard Oil Change Society With reference to the levels and spheres of corporate power discussed in [chapter 3], how did the power of Standard Oil change society? Was this power exercised in keeping with the social contract of Rockefeller s era? With reference to the levels and spheres of corporate power discussed in the chapter, Rockefeller and the powers of Standard Oil had impacts to the society economically, technologically, politically, and culturally. When Rockefeller was young, he found an investment that would change him for the rest of his life. The Cleveland petroleum refinery in which he invested $4,000 in 1863, was still in its beginning stages. However, Rockefeller was devoted to the oil business, soon becoming one the most successful men in history. Economic power is the ability of the corporation to influence events, activities, and people by the virtue of control over resources, particularly property. The power of Standard Oil changed society by leading the economy to economic growth. The Standard Oil business had built facilities and employed workers. In turn, this had also increased the economy to a fuel related industry. As Rockefeller had expanded the business of his company, Standard Oil also improved and perfected their oil refined technology. In terms of a deeper level of the power, the Standard Oil business sparked the development in other industries, such as the automobile industry. • 21. Ancient Egyptian Religion and Worldview 1) Ancient Egyptian religion and worldview was simultaneously both extraordinarily simplistic and extremely complicated. The king s essential unique title, the Horus name, broadcasted that he was a part of the god Horus, a sky god who was portrayed as a half man half falcon. Different aliases were added to this one, remarkably Son of Re (the sun god) and Perfect God, both presented in the fourth administration (c. 2575 2465 bce), when the incredible pyramids were developed. The name Son of Re put the ruler in a nearby, however, impoverished connection with the heading figure in the pantheon. This showed that the ruler had the status of a minor divinity, for which he was consummated through promotion to his office; it confined the degree of his godlikeness and divided him from full divinity. In his halfway position between mankind and the divine beings, the king could accept the most excessive praise, and in a few ways, was more unmistakable than any single god. In death he tried to gain admittance to the afterlife, however couldn t get away from the human setting. Despite the fact that illustrious funerary icons contrasted in sort from different tombs and were unfathomably larger, they were excessively looted and vandalized, and few regal funeral home religions were dependable. Many politicians who are anti immigrant and pro immigrant seek for ways by which they can impact their political base. As research shows, politicians and anti immigrant groups take advantage of the mass media in order to persuade their constituency. The media uses quantitative data analysis of the unauthorized population to create a media spectacle, by the portrayal of unauthorized immigrants as criminals (Correa Cabrera 2012). This media spectacle serves to exploit the fears of many Americans who oppose legalization. As a result, many people feel encouraged to contact their local representatives to stand against the legalization of the unauthorized population. Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 First, it is important to present a historical context of unauthorized immigration to understand the current dilemma. In order to change discriminatory immigration policies, the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 was signed into law. After the 1965 act, immigration from Asia and Latin America increased dramatically. However, for Latin America countries, the legislation restricted the number of legal entries into the United States. The text is composed not of chapters but of discrete, punctuated paragraphs that mirror the movements of the father and son on their journey. McCarthy s writing style reflects sparseness in that he chooses to write in fragments and he keeps the father s and son s dialogue very choppy. Authors style of narrating this story is very scrappy and sparse, which describes the infertile and miserable land through which the man and boy are traveling. In the book we noticed, McCarthy makes less use of quotation and apostrophes. There are no brakes through dialogues. Because this is a post apocalyptic story, the exception of these punctuation basics might help as a way of author to show that in this new world, fragments of the old world such as materialistic objects and humanity exists in scarce amount. McCarthy s narrative voice is powerful and completely shapes the stories he tells. The story begins with the man and boy making their journey along the road. The story is set in a post apocalyptic world, date and place are unnamed. In 1994, an intergovernmental agreement was made on the gas issue and it included a clause that stated that Gazprom would participate in the process of privatization of gas enterprises and others in other sectors (Nichol and Steven 1 6). It was agreed that Gazprom would take a 51 percent stake in the pipeline infrastructure. In 1995, the two countries agreed to come up with a cooperative company that they would call Gaztransit so as to operate the Ukrainian gas assets in exchange for a debt write off. Neither of the agreements was implemented, in fact, Ukraine adopted a law called the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine that disallowed the privatization of any gas and oil asset in Ukraine (Brzezinski and Brzezins 150). Three years later, Gazprom and Naftohaz established various contracts where Gazprom would pay for transit with a certain volume of gas creating a link involving gas prices and tariffs for transit. Nonetheless, this contract never resolved any of the debt disputes and the siphoning of gas from the pipelines continued. The debt concern was resolved on the fourth of October in the year 2001 when the additional measures that centered on the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine was signed by an intergovernmental agreement. He noted in his writings, regarding the workers and slaves, that neglect of diet affected their health, yet, work was not considered an influencing factor on humoral balance (Tountas 2009, p.186 187, Fleming Parker 2012, p.28, Turner 2000, p.13, Krieger, pp.43 44, Noviik and morrow, 2008, p.5). The NFL wanted to ease up on the punishments given out on marijuana abuse, and focus on cracking down on DUI s and PED s. The punishments given are varied by what offense the player commits. • 37. Descriptive Essay On A Walk In The Park A Walk in the Park A ways away from a town that I call home, I found a happy place. I often find myself walking through the park by myself. The beautiful trees, the way the yellow and red leaves crumple under my feet every step I take. When the flowers bloom and how it s the most spectacular sight you could ever imagine seeing, all the different colors that appear. When you breathe in and you get this smell of purity, you feel free and alive. Sometimes I like to sit on the old wooden bench where the bench frame is a little rusted, and I get rid of my thoughts and my eyes search the sky. In the winter the icy breeze makes me shiver, and the cold air I take in, is like sitting in front of an air conditioner and breathing in. Some mornings the sun beams across the sky, which is not quite blue yet, but the sun has almost fully risen. When the wind blows, it grazes over the blades of grass. Some days I just stand and take a deep breath in and I can taste the spring. When summer comes around, and the bees are buzzing, and the hot sun beats on the back of my neck, I lay on the soft grass and listen, to the birds chirping a beautiful song, and the kids playing in the park. The sky is the bluest view in sight. Walking through the trail full of mud and leaves always made me think about my life. It was always there when I needed to walk and get things off my mind. Looking around watching the leaves fall off tree after tree flying like butterflies, all different colors. When they stopped, they immediately died and they were not coming back alive again. Piled leaves filled up under trees and children ran and jumped on them like they were pillows. These trees tripled the height of humans with numerous branches holding hundreds of leaves. While walking the river flows and it is such a beautiful view with the sun shining right off of it. The ducks and little birds chirping and floating through the smooth water puts a joy to my face. I found a rest area with a bench and by it was a fountain. The ripple of water and the singing that the birds formed made it peaceful to sit there and study the fountain. Just appreciating the little things in life and realizing what all I have and have overcome is what the park helps me ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This method is proving to be the most sensitive among all existing standard screening methods in detecting Down syndrome, which is the most prevalent genetic disorder in United States. Beside the accuracy, the cffDNA test is noninvasive, it yields results early in pregnancy, and it is safe to the mother and fetus. Furthermore, when used as a primary screening method, it has proven to significantly reduce reliance on more invasive diagnostic procedures. Beer Novembert Law Lab Report Using the Beer Lambert Law, it can be interpreted that variation of the concentration in relation to the constant and the path length of the cuvette will be the sole factor in changing the absorption rate of a solution, since the length of the cuvette remains 1 cm throughout the duration of the experiment. A calibration curve that compares the values for the absorbances and the concentrations of the yellow and blue dye can be found in figures 1 and 2 respectively. Figure 1. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As with the yellow dye, it was observed that there was no connection to be made between the absorption and the wavelength. Nevertheless, it was identified that the statistics we received regarding our wavelength did not emulate that which was found with many of the other groups during the experiment. Our wavelength remained consistent throughout the dilution of the substance, while others found that the wavelength decreased as did the concentration of their solution. This brings up the question of whether diluting a substance will affect the wavelength at which it will reach its peak absorption. It has already been concluded that concentration and absorption are inversely proportional, but the relationship the wavelength is intended to have is not addresses. As one dilutes a solution, the overall volume of water present increases. But, as water is clear, it does not have a position on the color wheel, and a direct estimation of the wavelength at which it reaches its peak wavelength cannot be determined based on current data. However, as we were the only ones that obtained a consistent wavelength regardless of the concentration, it can inferred that there was likely some type of error. Initial thoughts lead to it the most likely source being systematic error with the UV VIS spectrometer, as the only possible source of personal error that could have lead to these results would be ... • 44. The Pros And Cons Of Fiscal Decentralization Cost effectiveness The idea of fiscal decentralization injecting competition among local governments has an added advantage of making local officials pursue customer driven investments which are more likely to meet expectations of local people and patronage of services. When local service delivery meet local people expectations, they tend to pay for services and even honor their tax obligations without much coercion because they even appear more willing to do so (Briscoe and Garn 1995, Litvack Seddon, 1999). Additionally, if what is being supplied meets local demand and associated with the necessary openness or cost recovery, local people and groups have a higher tendency of demanding accountability, closely monitoring local government activities which will reinforce the corruption reduction theme discussed previously. Local monitoring and demand side of accountability help to reduce information asymmetries and corruption tendencies which may have potential to weaken both allocative efficiency and cost recovery. Stonewall Riots And The Gay Rights Movement In 2016 President Obama named the Stonewall Inn as the first National monument to LGBTQIA (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Questioning, Asexual, Intersex) rights. We hear about the civil rights movement, women s rights and even the labor movement; but seldom do we hear about the gay rights movement. Due to the allure of Stonewall Inn; Inspector Pine and Detective Smythe of the New York City Police department, made it their mission to shut it down like they did several other mafia run gay bars in Greenwich. Pine and Smythe devised a plan to gain access to the bar and arrest as many people as possible. Pine did not want any tip offs for the raid, so he planned accordingly; Pine thought it would be smart to draft a few men from anti gay support groups and two undercover policewomen from a neighboring precinct. They would enter acting as gay men and women, start mingling with bar patrons and then leave the bar and regroup with Pine and Smythe and begin the raid. Although bluefin tuna does provide food and livelihoods for many people, they are more than just seafood. The bluefin tuna is a top predator in the marine food chain, maintaining an important balance in the ocean environment (Walsh).
