2. Existing Product
My product is still in its idea state but the similarities I plan to be are as
follows; front cover will include microphones, new upcoming microphone and
a prize. For the double page spread, their size is based on A4 which is quite
compact with an image and text on one page. My product feature will be
based on A3(2 page spread) with images on one side and text on the other.
Based on my interviews they prefer to look at images to see if it’s abut a topic
they’re interested in and therefor feel that they want to read about that
product. The layout is simplistic but also informative. In terms of colours this
consists of different colours such as blue representing calm, peace and
optimism, orange representing happiness and friendliness and yellow
representing harmony, energy and hope. I plan mine to have various colours
such as red representing passion, purple representing kind and
compassionate, yellow representing harmony, hope and energy and green
representing satisfying. The gold colour on the microphone represents
expensive and it’s a premium product. The double page spread features the
standard 2 column layout for text listing everything under separate bullet
points. The magazine contains 14 different product reviews so the buyer is
getting more for their money.
3. Existing Product
This is similar to my product due to it being about the same TV show
however my design will look to incorporate characters from the show
and their quotes using a two-tone colour scheme which is something I
haven't seen on the current market. I will chose not to include the
Game of Thrones title because I feel that it wouldn’t be necessary
because I’m using recognisable characters. Also I find that the title
takes up too much space on the garment that I would rather use for
the picture which fits the aesthetic I’m looking for. The colours used are
similar, light grey and dark grey representing practical, conservative
and formal, which I’m looking to keep because I want a two-tone effect
which is easy on the eye.
4. Existing Product
Since I can’t quite compare the actual audio book because I couldn’t find a free
sample for this, so this comparison will have to be about just the front cover.
I plan my cover to be similar in ways such as a
dragon on the front cover having opposite
colours to the background to avoid replicating the
product and to avoid copyright it will also have
clear, stand out text.
On my cover I will make it clear that it is an audio
book and the age restriction will be on the back
on the physical version. I will also seek
permission to use the variant of this design.
5. Existing Product
This was difficult to do because I had to find something similar that was pre-1990
This will be similar to my magazine cover in ways
such as someone being in front of audio equipment
and date, issue number and price will be included in
one of the corners. It will be different in ways such as
having a coloured photo on the cover, competitions
made prominent to attract extra customers and text
to highlight features and articles. My layout allows
potential customers to clearly see the name of the
magazine, the photo of the main featured equipment
plus clear text highlighting other articles.
6. Research Analysis
• What common features do the researched
products have?
• They’re about the same topic but different in terms of style and layout
from what I had in mind. This can be used to my advantage by
bringing something new to the table.
• What aspects of the research will you include
within your on work?
• I will include similar colour schemes and topics because I find that
they work well with what I have in mind. I will be using designs
synonymous with Game of Thrones where the t-shirt has the raven I
will be using more popular characters. I will also using variant of the
dragon design for my audio book. In regards to my audio magazine I
will be featuring audio equipment on the front cover but with more
text explaining features.
8. Audience research
• Observation: 60% are male, 30% are female and 10% of them preferred not to
say.
• What this says about my audience: Most of them are male.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: I will do
this by making the audio book contain graphic content because most males prefer more
action oriented content.
9. Audience research
• Observation: 90% were in between the ages of 16-19 and 10% of them preferred
not to say.
• What this says about my audience: The majority of them are in
between the ages of 16-19
• How will your product appeal to this audience: I will include content
suitable to that age group, but I will also include parts that may only be suitable for older audiences.
10. Audience research
• Observation:For this I did a multiple choice question. 60% were interested in merchandise based on their
preferences. 50% were interested in podcasts, 30% were interested in magazines, 10% were interested in audio books and
30% weren’t interested in any if the above. The problem with doing multiple choices is that the same person can also choose
another option, thus leading to an unclear chart that doesn't add up to 100% like it is here. To avoid this in future I would
either make the survey have a text box or I will only make them choose one option.
• What this says about my audience: The majority are interested in merchandise.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: I will create merchandise and a magazine for
branching products since those are one of the most popular side products.
11. Audience research
• Observation: 0% aren’t interested in purchasing merchandise based on Game of Thrones.
• What this says about my audience: None of them are interested in existing Game of
Thrones merchandise.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: I will continue making Game of
thrones merchandise despite this result because I will try to bring something new to the table rather than
doing the typical iron throne merchandise.
12. Audience research
• Observation: 60% of them aren’t interested purchasing existing merchandise based on
audio references, 30% are and 10% Don’t know.
• What this says about my audience: Most of them aren’t interested in
purchasing merchandise based on audio references.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: I felt I was unclear and
vague when I said audio references, what I should have done was provide a link or a picture
for similar merchandise so they could have an idea on what I was wanting to create.
13. Audience research
• Observation: 60% of them aren’t interested in Game of Thrones, while the other 40% are kind of
interested.
• What this says about my audience: The majority of them aren’t interested Game of
Thrones.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: I know that the TV show is VERY
popular and I feel like I got the unlucky few who haven’t experienced it and since season 8 is round the
corner the popularity should increase. So despite the result I continue to create an audio book on Game of
Thrones and merchandise of the same topic.
14. Audience research
• Observation: 60% of them are interested in audio recording while the other 40% aren’t.
• What this says about my audience: Most of them are interested in audio
recording.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: I will create a magazine
based on audio recording/podcast creation so they have better equipment and understanding on
how to do so.
15. Audience research
• Observation: This has the same problem as slide 10 with it being a multiple choice question the chart doesn’t add
up to 100%. 50% prefer to buy clothes when it comes to merchandise, 40% would purchase a poster, 20% would
buy a phone case, 20% would purchase a mug and the final 20% would buy a key ring. To avoid complication like
this in the future I will make them only select one.
• What this says about my audience: When it comes to merchandise most of them prefer to
buy clothes.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: I will create merchandise on clothes,
posters and mugs because they are the most popular according to this survey.
16. Audience research
• Observation:40% of them preferred to only create podcasts rather than being featured in them, 40% didn’t
want to be involved in a podcast and 20% wanted to only be featured in podcasts. I don’t know what happened or
why I included a yes or a no because this is not a yes or no answer. To avoid this in future I will proof read for a
third time and/or get someone else to analyse the survey to check for spelling errors or incorrect wording.
• What this says about my audience: Most of them prefer to create podcasts.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: I will create a magazine based on podcast
creation so they have better equipment and understanding on how to do so.
17. Audience research
• Observation: 50% prefer normal books, 30% prefer audio books and 20% don’t know.
• What this says about my audience: Most of them prefer normal books.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: Despite this
result I will still create and audio book because they are becoming increasingly more popular.
19. Interview 1Q1. What kind of merchandise would you find most appealing? And why?
A. I like merchandise in the form of clothing. I find this most appealing since it will
last quite a while.
Q2. What is a reasonable price range you think is appropriate for merchandise such
as mugs, posters, clothes, key rings and phone cases. And why?
A. The price for merchandise would depend on what you’re buying. E.g. if you were
to buy a hoodie, you would expect it to be around £20 or more. I think that a
reasonable price would be £20 or less.
Q3. Do you or don’t you like the TV show Game of Thrones? In either case why?
A. I’m not a huge fan of Game of Thrones but I also don’t dislike it either. The overall
show is quite long which is a big turn off for me.
Q4. Which appeals more to you regular books or audio books? And why?
A. I prefer regular books over audio books. This is because I like to have a physical
copy of the book, rather than one being read to me.
Q5. Which would you be more inclined to purchase, merchandise based on films,
music, games or TV shows? And why?
A. I would most likely buy merchandise based around artists that I like, as in I would
buy their albums or a hoodie. This is because this sort of merchandise can last a
long time.
20. Interview 1
• Observation: This person doesn't have much interest within the
topics of my product(s).
• What this says about my audience: Not all of them
will be interested with my product(s) and people expect my product(s) to
be cheaper than I had initially planned.
• How will your product appeal to this audience:
I shall make my product(s) cheaper than I had originally intended and I will
not make any changes to my products because I know that I asked
someone who isn't interested in Game of Thrones when I know it is one of
the most popular TV shows.
21. Interview 2Q1. What would be the main reason for purchasing a magazine? And why?
A. I like to read an interesting article to give me more insight of the topic.
Q2. What genre would you find most appealing in an audio book? And why?
A. Sport, because I like listening to sport on the radio and I always listen to sport
when ever it’s on.
Q3. What would you find appealing about an audio book in general? And why?
A. The type of voice used in the audio because if it was a boring voice I wouldn’t
keep listening to it.
Q4. What would be your main reasons for not buying (A) an audio book and (B)
a magazine? And why?
A. I wouldn’t buy a magazine because I don’t enjoy reading. I also wouldn’t buy
an audio book because they are too expensive.
Q5. Thinking about content and layout what maintains your interest the most?
And why?
A. If the content was interesting to listen to, I wouldn’t listen to it if it wasn’t.
Layout would have to be something that I haven’t seen before to maintain my
interest.
22. Interview 2
• Observation: The topics of my product(s) again doesn’t appeal to
this individual.
• What this says about my audience: Not all of them
have the money for my product(s) with the price range I had in mind.
• How will your product appeal to this audience:
I will make my product(s) cheaper to make my product(s) more accessible
to people with less money.
23. Audience Profile
Category Demographic Content to appeal to this audience
Age Range
Primary target
audience:16-19
Secondary target
audience: 12+
I will make the audio book restricted to 16+
because people at this age have access to a
wider degree of content that make for more
dramatic stories.
Gender
Primary: Male
Secondary: Female
I will make the audio book appeal primarily to
males because there are more males who prefer
violent content than females usually. The
magazine will appeal to males more because
there are more male podcast creators than
females.
Psychographic
Type A achiever I think my product would attract type A achievers
because they are most likely to be wealthy and
they have disposable income, want top line
products and are often in the market for
complete collections.
Social Status
Middle class For the audio book I will make them pay £19.99.
For the magazine I will make them pay £4.99.
For the merchandise T-shirts will go for £15-20.
Hoodies will go for £20, mugs will go for £4.99
and posters will go for £2.99.
25. Research Evaluation• Give an overview of how you conducted your research. Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each method
– Product Research
– A weakness of my merchandise product research was that there weren’t many clothing items
with a similar style of what I had in mind. This could also be used to my advantage by bringing
something new to the table.
– A strength would be with the existing products especially the magazine as they gave me a
greater insight on what should be included.
– Questionnaires
– I created the survey on a website called survey monkey. Overall it’s a great website but it’s a
shame that you have to pay for a premium in order to include images within the questions
because I would have found that useful for when I’m talking about merchandise so I could give
an example, but I was limited to the free version so I worked with what I had.
– For strengths, I got good answers relatively quickly after sending the email out.
– For weaknesses, there was some kind of glitch/bug within the link that I sent, for some reason
whenever someone opened it everything was white and the only way to see the text was to
highlight it. I don’t know how it happened because it was on a wooden background and the
text was black, so to fix it I changed the background to plain white and reselected the font
colour and sent it again, that magically worked but it was delayed due to that reason and I
didn’t get feedback until a bit later.
– Interviews
– I came up with 10 questions and asked 2 different people (5 for each), I thought the answers
gave me more insight on what people do and don’t like/want.
– A strength would be they didn’t go off topic and I got great quality answers to my questions.
– A weakness would be I should have asked 2 extra people who do have an interest in specific
topics so I have a variety of people who do and don’t like it.
26. Research Evaluation
• What sort of a response did you get?
• For my survey I found that I got good quantitative results, there was a
question that to some didn’t make sense (slide 16) as yes was included as
a part of the question but that didn’t define how much involvement the
respondents wanted to have in the podcast. There were 2 of the results
didn’t give me accurate answers (slide 10 and 15) because I enabled the
respondents to select more than one answer which game unreliable
metric to measure against. Overall I got solid informative answers
particularly about pricing.
• How did you distribute your survey? Give an advantage and a disadvantage.
• I created the survey through a website called Survey Monkey. I used a
web link and distributed it through email. An advantage of this method is
that it is easy to access. For a disadvantage there can be some rare cases
where the email can get lost and if not noticed quickly, responses can
take longer.
