Research – Collective Theories
• The four main graphic design theories I research for my project were: Gestalt theory, Grid theory, the Golden
Ratio and Colour Theory. I used all of these theories at least once within the making of my products, for
example the Golden Ratio in my Film Poster (at the bottom). The most useful theory I research however, was
the Colour theory. Using this theory allowed me to use similar colours, which improved the aesthetics greatly
because it made my products look much more professional and the colours all worked well together.
• The grid method wasn’t as useful, as it is very basic, therefore if I used it as a template for all my products,
then they wouldn’t stand out from the rest (which I wanted them to do). On the other hand because it is very
basic, I may have used it without planning on, which isn’t a bad idea because it is used by many professionals,
however I didn’t want to plan to use it from the start, as I thought the other theories would be more
effective. An example of where I used the grid theory unintentionally is at the bottom and as you can see it is
fairly basic and this layout could be improved if I had more time, making it more effective for the viewer to
the imagery as a focal point, rather than the title/logo (although this could also be due to colour).
• The graphic designers I researched were quite helpful during my production because their beliefs and
approaches to work were quite inspiring, for example Lauren Hom stated in an interview “make realistic to-do
lists and focus all your attention on one task at a time. This proved to be helpful during my production, as it
allowed to me to not lose my ‘train of thought’ and allowed me to finish my products quicker and with more
detail because I focused on solely one product at a time with my full attention.
Research – Existing Products
• My existing products research was likely my most influential and useful aspect of my research. I put
a lot of detail into the analyses, which showed I could understand them, meaning the product I
create would be up a standard this high.
• All of my choices were based on the genre of the film products (horror) and the colours/imagery
used within them, as my main product was going to be a film cover, therefore I search horror film
covers/posters/logos/merchandise and analysed product that fit this criteria, such as Friday The
13th, The Conjuring and Insidious. I talked about individual aspects of the products. For example
some of the aspects I talked about were: the colours used, the image on the product, audience
appeal, fonts and the reasons for all of these aspects. I believe that I analysed my existing products
in a lot of detail, talking about the aspects and what they show/interpret, how it makes the
audience feel and what the audience notices and features I can take from these analyses to use in
my own production to make them look as professional as possible, and I even analysed the context
of the products, showing where they came from and who made them etc.
Research – Existing Products
• I talked about similar features all these products have in common, in my summary. This
helped with my planning and production because I could follow these examples and use
certain aspects, for example I used the same structure for my film cover that were popular on
the existing products and I used similar colours that proved to be very effective for appealing
to and attracting the audience.
• Overall I am very pleased with my existing products research, however if I were to critique it,
there is always room for improvement. Even though this likely wouldn’t have been needed, I
could have included more products of merchandise and film posters, as I didn’t include a
many of these types of products as I did for film covers, however my film cover was my main
product for my project, therefore this is understandable.
Research – Primary Audience
• The next part of my research was audience research. To conduct this research I used a website
called ‘SurveyMonkey’. This worked by creating a survey and sending it around class, friends and
family etc. for them to complete with the questions created, so I could collect these results, analyse
them and understand who my target audience was (age, gender etc.). As you can see the results
collected were displayed in bar charts, which made reading the results a lot easier, compared to if I
had collected them manually and made it effective and easy to show in my PowerPoint. To discuss
the results I obtained, I gave an observation of what the chart shows (the gender/age of my
audience etc.). I then discussed what this said about my audience, for example ideas that they like,
such as certain colours, themes, styles etc., which is basically just discussing the observation in a bit
more detail. Finally I discussed how my product was going to appeal to my audience after reading
the results I got, for example if the survey results showed that my audience prefers a simple film
poster rather than a busy one with lots of features, I talked about how I can make my film poster
simple so it would appeal to my target audience.
Research – Primary Audience
• I believe that this was very useful, to see what others wanted, as well as researching professional
products, giving me a more clear understanding of how I was going to make my work, so it would
appeal to my target audience. I think that I mostly appealed to my target audience with my
production, as I followed my research findings, during my planning and production, to create
something that I wanted but that also appeal to them.
• I also think that this was very reliable and useful source of primary research because I shared this
survey with all of my class mates, my friends and family, whilst sharing it on social medias, such as
Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, which results me in receiving 77 responses. If I were to be very
critical then I could say to achieve a better understanding of my audience then I could have shared
the survey more or created multiple surveys with different questions, however I think this was still
reliable enough. It is unlikely, however it’s possible that receiving more responses could have
resulted in a different final product, as I may have received different answers from these extra
responses. As a whole I am happy with what my audience has chosen, as it is what I was hoping for,
as I believe they have a good appearance and they were my ideas from the start, as I was intending
to create something similar to pre-existing products.
Research – Primary Audience
• The final part of my primary research was the interviews from class peers. This consisted of asking three people
three different questions about my ideas and their opinions on films/horrors, for them to answer in more detail
(compared to my survey responses) so I could get a more clear understanding of what my target audience would
like to see in my productions and how I can appeal to them more. I am not too pleased with my interviews and I
think they could have been conducted better. For example there wasn’t a lot of questions, so I couldn’t get a lot
of information of my audience’s views and opinions on my ideas and the horror genre. Another reason why I
couldn’t get a lot of information was because I only asked three people, which doesn’t give my sources a lot of
variety and left me to assume a lot of my audience’s views. The answers from my class peers were, in my opinion,
not very detailed, as they could have written a lot more about what they thought about my ideas and my
questions, but instead gave me fairly brief answers, which wasn’t very helpful. However, they gave me enough
information for me to work with and understand their opinions, to allow me to follow their views when planning
and creating my productions, in order to appeal to my target audience as much as I could. I could have improved
these flaws by asking anonymous people of the public (that were a part of my target audience from the survey
results) and asking for more detail in their answers. If all of these flaws/implications were to be improved then I
would have more success in appealing to my target audience because I would know exactly what my target
audience would want to see in my products, which would make my productions much more effective and
popular. Although these answers were still helpful for my research, even if they could have been improved
greatly.
Research – Secondary Audience
• The next part of my research was my secondary research and to conduct this I searched
online different websites etc. to help me further understand my target audience. I believe
the research I conducted in this section was quite helpful, however it could have been
improve by a great amount.
• I first researched the horror genre in general and what this entails. For example I used a
website called StephenFollows.com to 10.6% of all films have been created to fit the horror
genre, therefore my audience is already small in the film industry, meaning I had to figure
out exactly what they would want to see to appeal to them, as I didn’t really have enough
room for assumptions or estimations. I also found the percentages of the film industry that
prefer horror to other genres and vise versa.
Research – Secondary Audience
• Using the 2011 UK Census I found the amount of certain ages living in the area of my production location
and where most people would be viewing it, as I wouldn’t be going global with my project and would be
sticking to a small location of where I live and where I would be making it. This was very useful to see the
exact amount, so I could get an approximation of people who could potentially see and appeal to my
products, which you could say isn’t good enough as an approximate answer, however this was the only
possibility. I then researched the gender and social class of my target audience, how many were in my
target audience location, and how you appeal to them, which again proved to be quite helpful.
• If I were to improve this area of my research I would definitely include more detail over the areas of how I
can and should appeal to these certain people and how people have done in the past. This would have
been much more useful for my planning and production, letting me know exactly who my target audience
is and what attracts them. Because of the lack of detail in my secondary research, my summary was fairly
short, meaning I couldn’t take a lot of information and inspiration from this research, therefore it wasn’t
as helpful as it could have been.
Research – Production
• The final part of my research was my production research. In this section I research different tutorials I could use
for the effects on the imagery using Photoshop and the outcomes I could lead to using these. I researched
different structure types (mainly using my existing products research) and created experiment products on
Photoshop, using existing images from google and creating the products very briefly. I then research costs of my
production, including the props I needed for my photography and equipment etc., even though most of these
aspects were provided by the college, I still counted them to show what my project would have cost me, if I were
to do it individually. Then moving onto the technical side of my work, I research different video/camera
techniques/settings and lighting techniques that would benefit me with my photography, allowing me to create
the best imagery I could. I found this section very useful because I wasn’t very experienced in using a camera and
the lighting in the studio. I watched tutorials on YouTube and experimented by myself with each piece of
equipment to find the best settings for the camera and the best angles and intensity for the lighting. Finally in
this section of the research I looked at the availability of the items and locations I wanted to use, for example I
needed to book the studio for a certain date and I needed to book the camera to take out of college. This was
useful because it allowed me to arrange a specific time to conduct my photography, allowing me to know when
it was and be able to plan my other work around these times, allowing time for potential mistakes/mishaps etc.
• If I were to complete this section again I would research more potential Photoshop effects and different ways I
could go about creating my film cover, for example without using Photoshop. Even though I most likely would
have still used Photoshop, it would have been good to show different potential routes for my production.
Proposal
• The first part of my proposal was discussing my previous projects and work and how these could
help and/or influence me with my FMP, for example I talked about the album cover I made, using
Photoshop, showing I have had some experience using Photoshop and working to suit a specific
audience, however for my FMP I realised I would have to improve the amount of detail in my pre-
production and production. I then discussed my project concept, so in other words, what I was
going to make (my film cover). This was useful in allowing me to show my specific ideas I had for my
project, instead of just a vague print-based project as I described it before starting this. It was also
useful to display my initial ideas to others and show the process I went through and where I started
with my project. I then discussed how I was going to evaluate it and how it was going to be
reviewed, where I mentioned the ongoing self evaluation (developmental diary and production
reflection) and the feedback I will receive after showing others my work.
• The next step of the proposal was creating a bibliography of all the different websites, books,
journals, films, videos etc. I have/will use in my project and displaying the information of these
sources after Harvard Referencing them.
• My final part of my proposal and likely my most important part, was the production schedule. I
created a specific and detailed schedule for my pre-production and production, so I could see if I
was behind, ahead or in time with my schedule during my project. This proved to be quite helpful,
as I did fall behind my schedule, therefore I realised I needed to work harder and do some more
additional work at home (on top of the homework I was already doing). This also allowed me to
take note of all the specific tasks I needed to complete for my project and how long I had to
complete each task.
Problem Solving
• This section was very important to conduct before my production time because it gave me the chance to
figure out a solution to all possible problems I may encounter during my production. Luckily, I only
encountered one problem that I wasn’t expecting during my production (which was the photography
location, as I will explain in another section), however there were many aspects of my production that I
would have had a problem with if it wasn’t for my problem solving.
• To list a few, the problems I was going to encounter were: where to position the lighting in the studio to
benefit my photography, which settings to use on the camera to benefit my photography and how to
create certain Photoshop effects, using certain tools. To overcome these problems (and all the other
problems I was going to encounter and the problems I may have encountered, I came up with a solution to
them all. This took a lot of pressure off the situation because I knew I had everything covered with a plan
B, if something were to go wrong. This also allowed me to continue with my production and move around
an implication quickly, saving time during my production. I included a lot of detail in this section,
discussing what my problems are and how I will overcome them sufficiently and then showing how I
overcame these problems. For example, I didn’t know which camera settings were ideal for my
photography, so I researched different settings and then experimented with my own photography in the
studio and in outdoor locations, which I documented in the PowerPoint. This allowed me to note exactly
which settings were best for my final photography I would be conducting for my final products. Most of my
theoretical problems didn’t occur, however it was good to know I had a backup plan if they did.
• I don’t believe I could have improved this section, or if I could I am unaware of how to do this. Either way I
don’t think I needed to because it proved to be very sufficient and helpful before and during my
production and I am very pleased with it.
Planning
• The first part of my planning was planning my photography shoot, finance, facilities and material etc. (basically all
the physical aspects of my production). This was very helpful as I then didn’t have to think about any of these
aspects during my production, as they were all accounted for, therefore during my production I could focus solely
on my production and nothing else. A lot of what I planned in this section I had basically already planned in my
problem solving, for example the lighting and camera settings/usage for my photoshoot. This meant I didn’t have
to spend a lot of time on this section, which allowed me to spend most of my time on the most important section
of my planning – the technical and aesthetic elements of my products.
• I discussed and planned texts/fonts, colour, imagery and layout plans in detail. I created mind maps for each, where
I explored all the potential routes I could take for my product and then I focused my attention on specific ideas I
wanted to take forward, for example a certain colour scheme or a certain font choice. I then discussed these
individual aspects in detail, talking about why I chose them, what they will provide for my product and how they
will appeal to my target audience. This allowed me to make sure I had good enough colours, fonts and imagery etc.
to best appeal to my target audience and still be aesthetically pleasing to other viewers, and I believe I have done
this well overall.
Planning
• I think the layout plans I created were very helpful, I first created them using shapes in PowerPoint, and
then added images found on Google onto these layout plans to show roughly what my product would look
like. This gave me a rough idea of how my product was going to end with, showing me if they suited my
ideas and appealed to my target audience. However these layout plans were only really beneficial for my
structure planning, as I didn’t focus on the specific imagery and colour is was collecting for the plans.
Which could have been an improvement for next time, as this would allow me to get a better view of how
my product would look like before actually creating it.
• Overall I think that my planning was very helpful during my production as I didn’t have to think of how or
what to create and just did it, saving me a lot of time and effort, meaning I could use this spare time and
effort on other areas (such as my production reflection). The most useful part of my planning was the
colours and text/fonts idea developments because the amount of detail I included made it much easier to
see how I was going to create my products and appeal to my target audience (which was the overall goal).
Developmental Diary
• This was suggested to be written weekly, however I decided to write my diary daily so I could remember the
specific tools I used on Photoshop or the specific website I used that day etc. This also allowed me to discuss my
day in a lot more detail and talk about my feelings/opinions on the work I produced that day.
• This worked for a week or so, as I left enough time at the end of the day write my diary, however after a while I
either forgot to write my diary or didn’t have time because I was caught up with the work I was doing that day, this
meant that I was behind on my diary days and I had to write them days later, meaning I forgot some specific details
that would have been good to include. This isn’t a huge problem however, because it would have been a lot less
detailed if I were to write these diaries weekly and I still remembered most of the details from the days I missed
the dairies for.
• Looking back, I should have written my developmental diaries when I got home or later that night if I missed them
that working day, which I would do if I were to complete this project again or in my future projects.
• A problem with my diaries were I didn’t write my diary day if I completed work at home, for example on my days off
the college schedule or if I was too ill to go into college and completed some work at home. I most likely should
have done this for my homework as well, which would have been interesting to see the extra diary days and the
details I would have included. This would have also greater showed my process throughout my project as the days
at home were not accounted for, therefore some work was created with no self-evaluation on the process.
• I also found these diaries very tedious, which may have been because I was evaluating my day incorrectly, however
with what I created, I found quite repetitive and not needed for myself. In a future project I think o will either self
evaluate differently or not complete developmental diaries until actually creating my products.
Production Reflection
• Like my developmental diary, I discussed my production days daily and in a good amount of detail. I did this to
show the process of my production and the product I was working on, discussing the specific tools and
techniques I was using. This was useful in showing others how I resulted in my final products, the steps I took and
the mishaps I encountered with Photoshop and how I overcame them.
• However, a problem with this, similar to my developmental diary, is I worked on some of my production at home
and all the work I did at home I didn’t discuss in my production reflection in as much detail as I did for the work I
did in College. This is because I completed my production reflection days during College times, therefore I may
have forgotten certain tools I used etc. at home, as they were on a different day to when I wrote about them.
• Another similar problem to my developmental diaries I encountered with my production reflection, were missing
days for either getting caught up in work and not having enough time during college times to discuss my
production day or simply forgetting to complete the production reflection days. This was a problem as I had to
then discuss them a different day, meaning I didn’t remember exactly what I did and what tools I sued etc.,
although I remembered most of the details.
• Again I should have written my production reflection days when I got home or later that night if I missed the
opportunity to complete them during class time, which would prevent me from falling behind on them, which I
would definitely do if I were to complete this project again or in future projects.
Peer Feedback
• My peer feedback was very helpful during my production and I am pleased I conducted it because it allowed me to
improve my products before finishing them, suing the feedback/advice from my peers who were in my target
audience.
• The amount of detail given in the answers were a big improvement compared to the answers I received in my
interviews in my primary audience research. The detail was helpful because I could see their views/opinions much
more clearer, allowing me to improve my products to a standard that suited them perfectly. Some improvement
advice wasn’t helpful however, for example one person said I needed to create a short trailer for the film, however
my project is solely print based, therefore I wouldn’t creating any video format products. Another stated that I
needed to make the background of my film cover brighter, however this contradicted the views and opinions of the
other two peers and the rest of my target audience that I researched at the start of the project, so I decided to
disregard this advice, however I was grateful for the effort.
• As you can see in the second image at the bottom I acted upon the improvement advice I was given and I am very
happy with he outcomes and I believe they have been improved well, thanks to my peers.
• To take it a step further I created a survey and shared it with more family and friends and the third image shows the
results I collected, however I didn’t have time to act upon the advice given, which is very disappointing and if I had
more time I would have definitely acted on this. In future projects I will make sure to leave more time for
improvements.
Methods Used
(tutorials etc.)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htyNVBaMQ1A
• The sewn mouth effect tutorial on YouTube was the main and most important tutorial I
followed/looked at during this project. Below are screenshots from the process in the tutorial video
and I think that this video was very helpful in allowing me to create the effect (also shown at the
bottom). The voiceover in the video was very clear and easy to understand, allowing me to follow
the tutorial smoothly. It took me a while to create this effect because my image has different
proportions and colours to the example image the tutorial works on, therefore I had to change
some colours slightly and the positioning of certain brush strokes. This sometimes went wrong and
made it look very amateurish, which is where my emotional problem came from (discussed on a
later slide). Because it sometimes went wrong I had to recreate that certain brush stroke, for
example, multiple times, therefore taking up more of my production time. As a whole I am pleased
I followed this tutorial as it allowed me to create my most important feature of my main FMP
product, and as seen in my feedback, many other people also appreciate the creativity and the
aesthetics of this sewn mouth effect.
Missed Opportunities
• I planned to use the studio and the Knavesmire Woods for my photography locations. However I could not
use the wooded location due to personal reasons from my client, therefore I was unable to photograph my
model in this area. I did however manage to work around this, however if my plan A went to plan then my
product may have ended a lot better in terms of its imagery and background.
• To overcome this problem I went to the Knavesmire Woods (location 2) on my own with the camera I
booked to use from College and took the photos without the model, for the background images etc. then
using the photos I took in the studio at York College of my model, I edited the model into the photos of the
wooded background on Photoshop. This ended fairly well and the outcome looked good, however I
believe that if I was able to take photos of my model in the location then this would have been much
better and the imagery would have looked much more realistic.
• After completing my production this was the only major problem involving missed opportunities,
therefore in hindsight it went well overall, however it could always have gone better.
Technical Problems
• A technical problem I faced during my project was my memory stick not having enough storage to save my film
cover as a psd file (Photoshop file), which was quite inconvenient. This was because I had included a lot of detail
in my film cover, therefore the file size was increasing every time I added another feature or added more detail
etc. because I had a lot of layers in my Photoshop document. To cut down the file size I deleted unwanted layers,
for example images that I had duplicated and then pressed the ‘hide’ icon on the original photo layer, therefore
was not being used. I duplicated the layer for safe keeping, in case I made a mistake on the layer I was editing I
could always go back and start again on the original photo layer, however when I finished a certain aspect I didn’t
go back and delete the original layer and I just left the layer on ‘hidden’, meaning my file size wasn’t decreasing
(which is why I had to go back and remove them all at once).
• My photoshop file reached a point where I had no unwanted layers or unwanted aspects in the file and it was still
too big to fit on my memory stick, so to deal with this problem I saved my work on OneDrive because this was
able to hold my document file of my film cover and the location was accessible wherever I work, as you only
needed connection to the internet, therefore I was able to complete some Photoshop work on my film cover
product at home, saving me more time during class.
• This was the only technical problem that occurred, to my knowledge, during my production, meaning it overall ran
fairly smoothly, on the technical side and I was able to complete my work at a constant rate without having to
stop or start again due to technical problems, allowing me to have all the time I had left myself for production, on
production and all the time I had left myself for planning etc. on that.
Management Problems
• I only had one client to work with that I was responsible for, therefore the potential problems were
minimal involving my production. However as I mentioned in my missed opportunities, I was
unable to conduct my photography with my model at location 2 (the Knavesmire Woods). This
meant I had to conduct the photography individually and edit the images in Photoshop, using the
images from the studio (the photography at the location my model was able to attend).
• There weren’t any other management problems, as all the other aspects of management were
handled well, as I planned for this, for example booking the studio and booking equipment, and
there were no problems with this. This made my production run smoothly with very little
implications occurring overall and the management team at the college being very helpful
throughout the project made it a lot easier, as I had most of my questioned answered in terms of
production and pre-production.
Emotional Problems
• During my production I did encounter an emotional problem involving my film cover. I spent a lot of time
and effort working on the sewn mouth effect, to then decide that it isn’t good enough and it doesn’t suit
my film cover or the intentions I was trying to portray. I was close to starting again on the imagery and
creating another effect. However if I had done this, this would have wasted days of my production time
and even more days creating a new effect to replace the original one. I simply did not have time for this
implication, so I asked my peers and my teacher and all were positive regarding the sewn mouth effect and
said that it looks very realistic and suits the film cover well. This changed my viewpoint of the effect and
my film cover as a whole and I was then able to carry on with the rest of the film cover, finalizing the
creative effect on the model.
• In the end, I am very pleased my peers and teacher managed to convince me my work was up to a high
standard, as this saved me a lot of time and future implications that could have occurred if I had created
another effect. For example these implications could have been: which effect to create, is the new effect
good enough, does the new effect suit my film cover, does it portray the same meaning and also problems
actually creating the effect, such as my inability to use a certain tool on Photoshop that the effect needed.
Time Management
• I believe that my time management couldn’t have been improved that much, however my self-ability to follow the
time management I had in place could have been improved. The detail I included in my pre-production
PowerPoints, show that I spent a lot of time and effort into these areas, however it took me a lot longer than it
should have to create these because I found myself wasting time during lesson, by not being able to focus all the
time.
• I created a production schedule to help me with my time management and this worked for part of my pre-
production and production but on some areas, such as research, I spent more time than accounted for, meaning I
fell behind on my schedule and had to work faster and harder to catch up and it meant starting new areas, such as
planning, before I had finished my previous section, which was not ideal, however this proved to have paid off,
after finishing my research because it included a lot of detail, which I wouldn’t have included if I worked on it for
less time.
• The overall management was around one week per section (research, problem solving etc.) and just under three
months for production, however I didn’t spend all of the time allocated for production on my production as I was
still finishing previous sections, meaning I had less time for my products and I was behind on my production
schedule. This resulted in not creating as many products as I had hoped for, for example I didn’t create as many
different types of merchandise as I wanted to. On the other hand, I did spend a lot of time on one product (my film
cover), which may have been too long, but this was my main and most important product, therefore I wanted this
to be the best and after all the time and effort I spent on this product I think I have achieved this.
Time Management
• If I was to complete my project again then I think I would try and work a little faster to prevent falling
behind schedule. I would also do more work at home (outside of College times) because I think if I caught
up my work at home more (as I already did do some work at home) then I wouldn’t have had to catch up
during my production time, meaning I may have been able to create more products.
• I believe that some of my products would have been improved if I had more time to work on them,
however some of them are up to where I wanted them to be (for example my film cover and production
logo). I do believe that I improved my PowerPoints as much as I could, a part from my planning, which
could have been improved using more detail in my ideas section. For example I could have explored more
colour schemes and imagery styles/themes and the outcomes that I could have led to if I went through
with those ideas. I could also discuss the potential opinions/views that the audience may have had on
these aspects of my products compared to the aspects I chose, therefore saying the positives and
negatives of these potential colour schemes, imagery styles and layout plans etc.
• Overall I am fairly pleased with the work I have created in the time I was given, however I was rushing a
lot, which I might not have been if I worked a little harder/faster during class time, then I may not have
fallen behind on my schedule.
Technical Qualities
Technical Qualities – Film Cover
(comparison)
The structure of my product is very similar to the structure of the professional
product. For the front cover the title is large and bold at the bottom and the
imagery is the main aspect of the cover with the detail and spookiness it brings.
Then finally the tagline at the top is positioned the same as well, showing my
film cover’s structure looks very professional, meaning the layout is easy to
understand and effective for the viewer to look at all the information and
imagery appropriately.
The back cover is also structure very similarly, with the credit section covering
the bottom half of the page, with almost unreadable information (as it’s not
important for the viewer) and the imagery and text above it, linking together as
w whole. This further proves that the appearance of my film cover looks
somewhat professional.
The text on my film cover has its similarities and differences to the
professional cover. First of all the title at the bottom is very large and
noticeable, with the contrasting colour to the background and the
large lettering. However, the font choice is very different to mine, as
my title’s font is more abstract and unique, where as this is very
simple. This doesn’t have to be a negative thing however, because
both films have different plots/features, therefore a simple font may
suit that film a lot better. The taglines at the top of the front and back
covers are fairly hard to read and don’t stand out in the professional
product, which is quite similar to my product, making more important
information (the other films) stand out more. The blurb on the
professional product is hard to read as it doesn’t contrast well with
the background, whereas mine is very clear and contrasting, although
because it’s a back cover, features don’t need to stand out.
The imagery on the front covers show different designs and
image styles on both products, however I believe the intentions
are very similar. Both images have props included to suggest the
occupation/setting of the character and the location. Both
images feature contradictory and mysterious aspects. For
example my cover has a sewn mouth, whilst the tagline reads
“be quiet” and the professional product has a doll as a prop in a
horror cover, which are normally portrayed as friendly as they
are a children’s toy.
Another aspect that is similar is the use of a colour scheme and the use of
different shades of one colour throughout the product. In the
professional product a beige/brown colour is used, linking the front and
back cover together so you know they are from the same film, no matter
which side of the cover you look at. The colour of the clothing in this
product is also following the colour scheme (on the back cover). I have
also done this with the colour green and red, which I have applied to my
foreground and background imagery on the front cover and tinted the
images in red on the back cover. I think that this makes my product look
professional because the colour schemes have been used in a very similar
way. Although in my opinion, I think that the use of the professional
product’s colour scheme works better for a generic horror film, however
I also appreciate the aesthetics of mine as well.
Technical Qualities – Film Poster 1
(comparison)
A reason why these two products
don’t look as similar as they could is
because Sinister is a film cover and
my product is just an advert poster.
However there are still some
similarities between them.
The imagery on these products are quite different, as my product has a
background with images placed on top (edited) and Sinister includes one image
with multiple features within it, meaning they only used one photograph.
Although the imagery is different the same intention is portrayed. Both products
include the main character, involved with blood, showing what the films are
going to involve. This allows horror fans to be attracted by the visuals of blood
and violence, which is very effective from both my product and the professional
product. A difference with the imagery is the way the professional product
leaves a lot of mystery, by not showing the face of the character on the cover
and not showing who’s blood it is or what weapon was used. This is different
because I have included the murder weapon and the character’s face, which
answers a lot of questions, that didn’t need to be answered, which therefore
could be an improvement for next time.
The colours used in both these products are very similar; a shaded
beige/grey colour. This colour is effective because it is quite bland,
therefore doesn’t portray many meanings through connotations.
This emptiness the colours leave can relate to horror fans because it
brings fear to them, not knowing what the colour is for, why it is
used etc. Also, many professional horror films sue this colour,
therefore if you see this colour on a film cover, then it is likely to be
in the horror genre and fans will notice this quickly, making it very
effective. The colour of the texts are quite different, however both
follow a colour scheme of 2-3 colours, that relate to the imagery on
their product. The blood on Sinister is very dark, which is why it
works well with the dark title, whereas the text on my product is
light, therefore works better with my bright blood on the imagery
(and the title).
A similar effect is used for the text that are made to be focal
points. This effect is a dripping from the letters, however my
product’s text emphasises this much more than the
professional product. On the other and you could say that the
Sinister’s text is smudged, rather than dripping, but either way,
the lettering is edited in a similar way, which makes it appear
more eerie. As done on the professional product, it may have
been better for me to position the dripping text at the top of
the page because the dripping leads the viewer’s eyes to the
next aspect to look at, however for my product this is the
bottom of the page. The professional product executes this
nicely, as It leads to the imagery.
The structure of these products are
fairly different, however as I have
stated they were produced for
different reasons. The structure of the
imagery however is fairly similar.
When looking at them as a whole, you
can see the grid theory has been used,
with aspects of the imagery
positioned on each side of the
product, instead of in the center. The
positioning of the title is at the bottom
(off-center) but is still a focal point,
which is the same for the professional
product, apart from the position is at
the top rather than the bottom.
Technical Qualities – Film Poster 2
(comparison)
The imagery in these products are the aspects that are the most similar between these two
products. The photography, structure of the image and posing of the model are almost identical.
The only thing different in the imagery is the background and the costume. For the background in
the professional product, the photograph was taken at the location, whereas I added the smoke
after the photography. You could say this makes my product look less professional because the
location/setting for my product is unknown, however this also brings mystery because of the
unknown. The lighting in the imagery is used a lot more effectively in the professional product,
compared to my product, because it emphasises certain aspects (such as the killer’s mask), which
mine does not. His could be a good improvement if I had more time, as the poster as a whole
looks very equal and bland throughout, with certain aspects only standing out due to the
positioning of the smoke.
The overall structure of both of these products are
very similar, as I used Friday he 13th as inspiration.
The imagery is the main focal point positioned in
the middle of the page and covering the majority of
it. Where the professional product displays the
title, I have displayed my tagline because I only
included the title as a logo, small and in the corner.
I think the title logo stands out too much in my
opinion as this wasn’t supposed to be a focal point.
Other than this, I think my product is very similar to
the professional product’s structure and focal
points, therefore making my product look
professional.
Along with the imagery, the colours on the
professional product make certain aspects stand out
more, to put emphasis on them, which may have
been useful for me to do. I have not included any
contrasting or bright colours, meaning no aspects
fully stand out, however this can also be seen as a
good thing because it sets the mood for the horror
style and makes everything eerie and mysterious.
Although in my opinion, I believe that the
professional product’s use of contrasting colours in
the imagery is more effective, bringing attention to
specific aspects (e.g. the killers mask). The colours of
the title are the same, however I lowered the
opacity on my title, to fit the design theme of the
poster, whereas in the other product the title stands
out a lot more as it is sharper and more clear,
meaning it is easier to see for the viewer, which may
have been useful for my product.
The design style on both of these products
are quite similar (as I used this for
inspiration). The imagery is very simple, yet
still creates mystery and spooks the viewer,
which is the intention for a horror design.
This shows that my product has a very
similar design to a professional product’s
design, however the execution of the
imagery/colours may not have been
created to a standard as high as this
product.
Technical Qualities – Film Poster 3
(comparison)
The imagery on both products use a similar effect
of shadowing sections of the character’s face, as it
makes the poster look creepy because you can’t
see all of their face. These images are the only
images on the products, putting more focus on
them and they both blend well with the
background. As you can see my image has been
edited in Photoshop to create this effect, however
the professional product’s imagery looks more
realistic, as if the shadow was there during the
photography (which it may have been), which is an
area I could have improved if I had more time to
work on this piece. Finally both images can be
interpreted to have multiple meanings, for
example hiding from something or seeking prey
(victims).
The structure of both of these products are
very similar, besides the location of the title,
compared to my tagline, which could be
excused for the fact that my product is a
poster and the other product is a film cover.
The image is large in a central position in
both products, which empahsises the use of
the image as a main focal point. This allows
the viewer to be enticed by the image and
then be encouraged to read the information
(with the title/tagline. Because my overall
product looks similar to the structure of the
professional product’s, this means that my
layout is of a professional standard, which
clearly is effective, otherwise it wouldn’t be
popular.
The tagline on my poster is the same as my first poster
and my film cover, which links all the products and
make the tagline known to the movie, which is also
what the professional product does. The font for the
tagline on my poster is quite basic, however this fits
with the theme of this poster (simplicity). Again, this is
similar to the professional product, using a fairly basic
font for the title, to fit with the basic (yet effective)
imagery. The only difference between the two is the
colour.
Compared to Don’t Be Scared, the colours I used could be improved greatly. For
example the colour of the tagline makes it very difficult to see or read, therefore it
does not stand out, whereas the title on the professional product does, with the
bright red colour against the dark black background. I did not want my tagline to
stand out, however I wanted it to be noticeable and when looking at the poster as a
whole, next to the other product, the tagline is not clear at all. The colour of the
imagery is controversial because you could say that the yellow tint gives the image a
bit of life, which the professional product’s imagery doesn’t, however you could also
say this contradicts the theme of the poster being ‘bland’ and ‘mysterious’. However,
either way, I think the imagery is very effective in both products.
Aesthetic Qualities
Aesthetic Qualities – Film Cover (1)
The imagery in this film cover is the main focal point and the most important part, as it is the first aspect the viewer sees when looking at
the product. The detail on the imagery is likely the main reason for why it is so aesthetically pleasing to the viewer because it makes the
image look very realistic, therefore professional. The sewn mouth effect used the most detailed part and this part of the image creates a lot
of tension. The use of the stitching on the mouth can be interpreted in different ways. First of all the viewer doesn’t know if the character is
the killer, however makes this assumption from the use of the prop (axe) and the scary feel/mood the image creates. Not knowing the for
definite who the character is, the viewer now feels fear, from the mystery of the character. On top of this, the stitching creates much more
mystery and fear, making the audience question: why is his mouth stitched? Who stitched it? What is the stitching for? Etc.
Another way the stitching can be interpreted is with the killer being psychotic and demonic enough, to a point of sewing his own mouth (for
unknown reasons at the moment), which makes the viewer want to watch the film to find out why and also because they know blood and
gore will be involved.
Finally the stitching can be seen as a voice control (however the audience doesn’t know who would be controlling him). This interpretation
also links with the tagline “keep quiet, you’re safe”.
The use of the prop in the imagery is effective in showing the audience what the film will involve, especially with the feature of blood on the
axe, showing this is a murder weapon and blood, gore and violence will be involved in the film, which many horror fans appeal to. The
aesthetics of the axe is also very pleasing as it looks very realistic, with the shining metal and shadowing on part of the weapon.
Linking with the prop, the background and the costume creates the setting/scene for the film, implying the killer is a lumberjack, as he is in
a wooded area, with an axe and wearing the stereotypical lumberjack attire. This gives insight into the plot of the film, showing the killings
are liking going to take place in a wooded area which is very spooky (much like Friday the 13th, which was a very popular horror film, due to
the filming location).
On the back cover the images are quite small, however they have been edited to fit nicely together on the back over, fading into the
background, making it more aesthetically pleasing when looking at it as a whole, meaning the viewer is likely to continue looking at it and
see all the other features of the cover (the blurb etc.). These images also allow the audience to see some of the other characters, giving
more insight into the film.
The colour used in this product could have been used better with more
emphasis on a specific colour on the front page for example, as there
are a few different, but no stand out colours. On one hand the cover
has a good appearance, with the dark/gloomy look of the dull colours,
following suit of the horror theme. However on the other hand, the
lack of strong, stand out colours means people are less likely to see the
product because it doesn’t catch their eye, therefore these colours may
have been more effective for a film poster, instead of the front cover.
The colour scheme in this product also includes a lot of red, which
portrays blood, anger, danger and also love (which is contradictory to
the other connotations but still links to the title). The colour green is
also a big colour in this product and it is displayed as a dark green, with
a lot of shadowing and darkness. This can be seen by the viewer as a
nature location and setting, but with a horrible twist, almost as if the
killer is going to use the nature against them because he knows the
nature location much more (as his profession, a lumberjack, is located
in this area). Finally the colour white is used in the majority of the text.
The main reason for is to make it stand out so it is easier to read, with
it contrasting against the dark background. However you can also view
it as showing the innocence and naivety of the victims (or even the
killer, if you read into the film more, creating mystery and wonder as to
what he’s murdering for). The white is used on the word “Kindness”,
which obviously is a positive word, with a colour that portrays positive
connotations, again showing the possibility of the killer being the
innocent/naïve one.
Aesthetic Qualities – Film Cover (2)
Aesthetic Qualities – Film Cover (3)
The structure of this film cover is very effective. The main imagery is positioned
in the center, allowing the viewer to see this first and be intrigued by the
creativeness and spookiness the image brings. The title is bold and clear at the
bottom of the page, allowing the viewer to see this clearly, after looking at the
imagery. The taglines are positioned at the top of the page, as these are the least
important information on the front cover, in small text. Although, they are still
easily noticeable due to the colour of them against the contrasting background.
Moving onto the side cover, this is supposed to be very simple, and I believe this
is simple yet effective because the pitch black background, with the white and
red text over it makes the title stand out, meaning if the DVD were to be placed
side on amongst other DVDs then this film would stand out (obviously
depending on the other DVDs), but it would still have a very good chance. The
title is the main aspect of the side cover, and then showing the other
information such as the production company and the age rating towards the
bottom, as this isn’t as important as the title.
Finally the back cover is structured the best out of the three sub-covers, in my
opinion. This is because it looks the most professional, with the credit section at
the bottom helping this view greatly. The images are somewhat abstract on the
back cover, instead of placed in symmetrical boxes, which I think brings the back
cover to life a lot more than boxes would. I then placed the blurb (fitted well
with the images) at the top in clear writing, as this is the second most important
aspect of the back cover, after the imagery that the viewer is intrigued by.
When looking at the product as a whole I think this looks very professional and
the structure has been created well to suit the audience’s needs when looking at
films covers, leading them to information using the imagery etc.
Aesthetic Qualities – Film Cover (4)
Finally the text is a big part of my product. First of all the title was created with an
aggressive, ‘sliced’ font, almost as if the killer created it by carving it with his axe. The
title is also very clear to read in big, bold and stand-out letters, which is good because
the double meaning within the title is effective in enticing the viewer to want to watch
it. The double meaning comes from the use of the word “axe”, as it is a play on words
and sounds like the famous phrase ‘acts of kindness’ but is instead switched with the
murder weapon in the film. This also leaves the viewer questioning why is it kindness?
How can murder by kind? Etc. This mystery and wonder the viewer is left with is very
effective in making them want to read more and making them want to watch the film.
Next, the tagline at the top has been created effectively, making the title of the films
also created by the same company, stand out more, as these a popular films, the
viewer will see these and want to watch the film. The use of the font on this tagline is
also very effective because it is dripping and the title of the films stand out because
they are in capital letters and this font makes capital letters bold and have much more
dripping of whatever substance the viewer imagines (most likely blood). The taglines
below look very professional as the font used is a very similar one to the font
professional covers usually use. The names of the critiques are placed below their
quote in small writing, again making it look more professional. The final tagline of the
front cover is very effective as it is somewhat confusing but also very eerie, making the
viewer feel fear and want to find out what it means.
Moving onto the back cover, the text in the credit section looks very professional, even
if it is hard to read, this is how it appears in many professional products. Then onto the
blurb, this could be improved aesthetically, possibly by giving it a more interesting
font, however this may have made it harder to read. Overall this is the only text aspect
of my cover that looks ‘unfinished’ in my opinion.
Aesthetic Qualities – 1st Film Poster (1)
The imagery in this product is quite effective because
it, the broken/destroyed/attacked background holds
the image of the who you presume is the killer and
the murder weapon, creating a lot of tension and
bringing a lot of fear. The fact that the character’s
mouth is covered with what looks to be duct tape, is
very eerie, because it makes you wonder why he has
duct tape over his mouth and who put it there. This
also relates to the text “keep quiet, you’re safe”, as
the character is keeping quiet with the duct tape over
his mouth, making you think is this the image of the
character who smeared the blood on the wall. The
eyes on the character are also shaded with a red
colour, implying either evil or an act of violence has
been conducted against him, showing the aggression
of the killer (if it’s the character on the poster or not).
The use of the axe blending into the background is
quite creative as well, as it shows the murder weapon,
especially as it has blood stains on it, giving the
audience and insight into what the film entails, along
with eh blood all over the poster.
The structure of this poster is
somewhat contradictory to
the typical poster, as the main
text is positioned to the right
of the page at the bottom and
the imagery is placed on
either side of the poster
covering the majority of the
poster. Then finally, the title of
the film is placed in the top
right corner, standing out due
to its bright colouring.
Although, this still works, as
the viewer sees the imagery
and text all at once (as a
whole), which is ideal because
they are all linking, as they are
all blending into the wall or
smeared on it.
Aesthetic Qualities – 1st Film Poster (1)
The colour in this product is
aesthetically pleasing but could also
be improved. The background
colour of the wall (the light
brown/grey) is very bland and
desaturated, which doesn’t stand
out and is quite boring to look at,
however it suits the horror genre
very well, as it doesn’t portray
many connotations, therefore
creating mystery. On the other
hand, this colours doesn’t stand
out, therefore it isn’t a positive
aspect because it doesn’t excite the
viewer or make them look twice.
The colour of the red balances this
out quite well however, because the
red is used quite a lot, as blood on
the wall, on the text, on the axe and
on the character. Even though the
imagery is blood the connotations
of blood’s colour (red) still portray
the idea of blood, danger and evil,
which are all perfect for a horror
product.
The aesthetics of the text in this poster are quite
good in my opinion. The effect used with the quote
“keep quiet, you’re safe” is very creative and realistic,
making it very effective portraying a spooky/eerie
mood. The text appears to be smeared blood on the
wall, which implies the killer has done this with the
blood of his victims, meaning there is murder and
violence in the film. This also shows the power of the
killer, as he is taunting the rest of the people with the
smeared blood, making the viewer fearful of the killer
and his actions to his victims, creating a lot of
tension. On the other hand, you could view this as
one of the victims smearing their own blood from a
wound after escaping the killer and trying to save the
other people, giving them advice to “keep quiet”. This
leaves a lot of mystery and unanswered questions,
making the viewer want to watch the film to find out.
The title in the top corner shows where the poster is
from and what film it is advertising, however
compared to the rest of the poster this looks too
‘placed on’ and doesn’t look part of the poster. An
improvement could be to change the sizing of the
title in the corner, so it doesn’t cover as much space
and doesn’t stand out as much as it does.
Aesthetic Qualities – 2nd Film Poster (1)
The structure of this poster is very
simple, which is very effective.
There are not a lot of features on
the poster, just the imagery, tagline
and logos, this makes it very clear
that it’s a poster rather than a film
cover, and shows it’s purpose is
purely for the aesthetics, rather
than to provide information. The
structure allows the viewer to
notice the imagery first, which is
ideal because it is the most
important aspect of the poster
because it is intriguing for the
viewer. It then allows the viewer to
notice the tagline, enticing the
viewer even more, making them
wonder what it means and who it
applies to.
Once again, for this product, the imagery is
the most important part of this piece of
work. First of all the facial expression on
the killer’s face is very serious and doesn’t
show much emotion, which is very spooky
and mysterious. Then moving onto the use
of the axe that the killer is holding, it adds
to the scariness of the poster, as it’s a
murder weapon. Dripping from the murder
weapon is what appears to be blood,
implying this character has killed people
with the axe (and the demonic expression
on his face).
Finally, the use of the smoke in the
background and the killer blending in with
it is also very effective aesthetically and it
also makes the image look much more
mysterious, as to where he is and what the
smoke is from, which horror fans love the
suspense and tension that this creates.
Aesthetic Qualities – 2nd Film Poster (2)
The text in this poster is easy to read, in
a what looks to be a simple font when
looking at the poster as a whole,
however when looking closely, you can
see that the font is dripping blood. The
dripping is presumed to be blood from
the imagery. This is quite effective
linking with the horror genre and the
film’s features. The tagline “silence is
key” is quite spooky and creates a lot of
tension for the viewer because this
implies that the killer is out looking for
his victims and the other people are
trying to be quiet, whilst hiding from
the killer, which is fearful for the victims
and the viewer.
Similar to the previous product, the
colour in the background is quite
bland with the grey smoke, which is
good and bad. It suits the horror
genre and style, but doesn’t stand
out very well. However if it were to
stand out then this would not have
been great aesthetically because it
wouldn’t have fit the smoke and the
interpretation the smoke brings (its
mystery). The grey background
allows the red colouring of the text,
blood and costume to stand out
more, allowing the blood, danger
and evil connotations the colour red
portrays.
Aesthetic Qualities – 3rd Film Poster (1)
The text in this product is
not very effective because
it is difficult to read, unless
you are very close to the
poster, due to the dark
colour of the text against
the dark background. The
actual phrase is quite eerie
as you don’t know who it
applies to or who is saying
it and it brings tension to
the poster because it
implies that the victims are
needing to be quiet to
survive, making the viewer
wonder if they do survive
or not.
The imagery in this product is
quite creative yet very simple, as
there is only one image on the
poster, however it fades
smoothly into the shadowing
background, therefore is simple
yet effective, as people are
‘wowed’ by the simple imagery.
The use of the black eyes also
show the emotion, along with
the facial expression, and the
tension of the film/character. It
creates tensions, as it appears
that the character is shouting,
and it makes you wonder is he
shouting in fear or anger, is he
shouting at the victims or the
killer and what he is shouting.
Aesthetic Qualities – 3rd Film Poster (2)
The structure of this poster is very
simple, which is very effective.
There are not a lot of features on
the poster, just the imagery, tagline
and logos, this makes it very clear
that it’s a poster rather than a film
cover, and shows it’s purpose is
purely for the aesthetics, rather
than to provide information. The
structure allows the viewer to
notice the imagery first, which is
ideal because it is the most
important aspect of the poster
because it is intriguing for the
viewer. It then allows the viewer to
notice the tagline, enticing the
viewer even more, making them
wonder what it means and who it
applies to.
The colour of the background
is very effective, as it portrays
the connotations of mystery,
death and power, which are all
aspects of the poster and the
film this product is promoting.
The fading into the black
background also link with the
mystery of the colour black.
The colour of the text is not
very effective because it is too
dark to notice easily, therefore
you need to focus on it to read
it, which shouldn’t be the
case, however this also
emphasizes the imagery,
which is the most important
part of the poster anyway.
Aesthetic Qualities – Film Logo
This is the same title as the title in the film
cover, therefore provides the same effect. The
title was created with an aggressive, ‘sliced’
font, almost as if the killer created it by carving
it with his axe. The title is also very clear to
read in big, bold and stand-out letters, which is
good because the double meaning within the
title is effective in enticing the viewer to want
to watch it. The double meaning comes from
the use of the word “axe”, as it is a play on
words and sounds like the famous phrase ‘acts
of kindness’ but is instead switched with the
murder weapon in the film. This also leaves the
viewer questioning why is it kindness? How can
murder by kind? Etc. This mystery and wonder
the viewer is left with is very effective in
making them want to read more and making
them want to watch the film.
The colour of this logo is very effective,
with black bringing many connotations
relating to the film cover and the horror
genre as a whole. For example black
shows power, evil, death and mystery,
all of which are involved in the film and
are shown in the film cover.
The colour red is also displayed in the
title and the blood, which also bring
connotations that relate to the film and
the same connotations and colour that
the film cover shows. These are danger,
evil and blood (which is even shown in
its physical form in the design, dripping
off the axe).
Finally the colour white is shown in the
title as well (as it’s exactly the same as
the title in the film cover), therefore
having the same connotations, such as
innocence, naivety etc. that the victims
in the film may have.
The design for this uses the title from the film cover and applying it
onto a silhouette of an axe. The faded edges of the axe makes it look
more interesting, as the axe almost fades it’s background (working best
against a black or white background. The use of the axe, relates the
product to the film and the blood, shows it’s a horror and again links it
with the killings in the film.
Aesthetic Qualities – Film Merchandise 1
The simplicity of this merchandise product is
quite effective, because it’s easy to
understand, see and work with. Many people
in my target audience (age 16-24) don’t like to
stand out, therefore a simple design means
they can wear this product without being
noticed easily by others, which is ideal. The
simplicity of the product also means that you
can wear it with various items of clothing, and
they still work well together, whereas if it
were brightly coloured with heavy imagery
covering the hoodie, this would make it hard
to match to other items of clothing.
The structure for this product is very
simple, as it only includes one aspect,
which is the film logo. I positioned it on the
left side of the hoodie, in the corner and as
I described in the design section, this
makes it very subtle, which is ideal for my
target audience as they don’t want to
stand out.
The colour of these jumpers are mainly for
aesthetic reasons and to allow the products
to fit with other items of clothing, however
they still relate to the film. For example the
black has connotations of evil, power, death
and mystery. These are all aspects included in
the film cover, however it is difficult to show
these connotations because many people
prefer to wear black clothing anyway. The
white colour is also portrayed in the film
cover, with the text and ‘innocence/naivety’
of the characters in the film. However, again
this is difficult to show through the clothing
because many people prefer to wear this
popular colour anyway.
The text on this product is the same image
from the film cover, therefore it is exactly the
same just with a different background,
however the analysis I gave of the title in my
film cover still applies.
The imagery for this product is the logo I created
for the film, using the title from the film cover and
applying it onto a silhouette of an axe. The faded
edges of the axe makes it look more interesting, as
the axe almost fades into the hoodie, however this
is a little different for the white hoodie because it
doesn’t fade as well as the black. The use of the
axe, relates the product to the film and the blood,
shows it’s a horror and again links it with the
killings in the film.
Aesthetic Qualities – Film Merchandise 2
The simplicity of this merchandise product is quite
effective, because it’s easy to understand, see and
work with. Many people in my target audience
(age 16-24) don’t like to stand out, therefore a
simple design means they can wear this product
without being noticed easily by others, which is
ideal. The simplicity of the product also means that
you can wear it with various items of clothing, and
they still work well together, whereas if it were
brightly coloured with heavy imagery covering the
hoodie, this would make it hard to match to other
items of clothing. This design compared to the
previous design is more stand out, due to the size
of the imagery, however this is the only aspect of
the product, meaning it’s still fairly simple.
The text on this product
is the same image from
the film cover, therefore
it is exactly the same just
with a different
background, however the
analysis I gave of the title
in my film cover still
applies.
The structure for this product is a little different
to the previous merchandise product, however
the design is still the same. The logo in this
product is large and positioned in the center of
the hoodie, which makes it stand out a lot more
than the previous product, and makes it much
less subtle. However, this is not a bad thing
because many people like to show what they
are wearing and like for it to stand out a little, as
the colours of the hoodies makes it more subtle,
compared to if the colours were bright yellow
for example.
The colour of these jumpers are mainly for
aesthetic reasons and to allow the products
to fit with other items of clothing, however
they still relate to the film. For example the
black has connotations of evil, power, death
and mystery. These are all aspects included in
the film cover, however it is difficult to show
these connotations because many people
prefer to wear black clothing anyway. The
white colour is also portrayed in the film
cover, with the text and ‘innocence/naivety’
of the characters in the film. However, again
this is difficult to show through the clothing
because many people prefer to wear this
popular colour anyway.
The imagery for this product is the logo I created for the
film, using the title from the film cover and applying it
onto a silhouette of an axe. The faded edges of the axe
makes it look more interesting, as the axe almost fades
into the hoodie, however this is a little different for the
white hoodie because it doesn’t fade as well as the
black. The use of the axe, relates the product to the film
and the blood, shows it’s a horror and again links it with
the killings in the film.
Aesthetic Qualities – Production Logo
The font of the large letters “HS” are quite effective in appealing to people of a younger
generation as it is quite abstract, like a brush stroke, however it is still fairly simple, which can
appeal to people of an older generation, therefore I can use this logo for all my work, no
matter what type of product I produce, which is very useful. This allows me to professionally
mark all of my work with my name. the font of the name in the middle of the logo is a very
simple, sans serif font, which is very effective because it makes it very easy to read and
understand, which is important for people to know the name of the company.
The colour used are very simple
and was chosen for this exact
reason. It appeals to people of
all generations, as everybody
can work with the colour black.
This colour is also very effective
because it can work with every
other colour, as the gaps in the
letter and the name “HAASE”
are spacing in the letters, even
though they look like white
colouring, just because the logo
is against a white background.
This means I can place it over
any product of any colour I
create, which is very useful.
The design of this logo is very
aesthetically pleasing and works quite
effectively. It uses the technique ‘closure’
on the letter “S” because the letter isn’t
fully complete, however you can still
realise it’s an “S”, therefore the viewer’s
mind automatically connects the missing
parts of the letter. The spacing in the “S”
and the horizontal line in the “H” leaves a
good area for the name to be placed,
instead of above or underneath the large
letters. This creates a good link between
them and makes it look like a sufficient
and professional logo. This design also
makes it very memorable because it’s
easy to remember but still looks very
creative.
Audience Appeal
Audience Appeal – Film Cover
As I mentioned in the colour
section, the text is very easy to
read, making it ideal for a younger
generation. The reason it’s easy to
read is the contrasting colour
compared to its background, the
simplicity of the font and the
boldness of the text. This is all apart
from the credit section which is
hard to read, however follows the
conventions of a typical film cover,
so it is excused. The title of the film
appeals to horror fans because it
looks very aggressive and as if it
were carved by the axe the killer is
holding, showing the violence the
audience wants to see.
The structure is quite appealing to my
target audience as people aged 16-24
usually look for simplicity in products
like this (as I found out through my
primary audience research). Even
though this isn’t the most simple, it still
is simple enough for my audience to
understand easily, with little effort,
however still includes aspect of creative
and complex imagery, for example the
sewn mouth effect on the killer.
The colour on this film cover isn’t very eye-catching, which most people appeal to on a film cover, however when
people see it, males are most likely going to appeal to the colours more than females (which is good as my target
audience is mainly male). They appeal to the dark red, and the black used as the negative connotations such as
blood, evil and death appeal to them when looking at films. You could also say that the background appeals to
some females due to the nature side of it (green), however it is darkened and desaturated a lot, therefore the
green is barely noticeable. The white stands out against the background, making the text easy to read, which is
appealing because it means you can read it at little effort, which is ideal for my 16-24 aged audience.
The audience appeals to the imagery in
this product because is shows a lot of
creativity and imagination, which
people of a younger generation (16-24)
appreciate more than people of an
older generation. Also, people of this
age range, along with males, in my
audience appeal to blood, gore and
violence, therefore they see the sewn
mouth and the blood involved with it
and see what the film is likely to entail.
They usually appeal to this due to their
‘immature’ nature, which also links
with the use of the axe in the imagery,
which again shows violence and murder
(especially with the blood on the end of
the axe).
Audience Appeal – Film Poster 1
As I mentioned in the imagery section, the text
appeals to my target audience because they are
attracted to blood and gore, due to their ‘immature
nature’. The text’s appearance is very eerie, as it
blood on a wall, dripping down, showing the phrase
“keep quiet, you’re safe”, showing the killer has
created this with smeared blood on the wall and to
get this blood he most likely had to kill someone.
Aside from aesthetics of the text, it is appealing to
my target audience technically as well. For example
the text is large, bold, clear and easy to
read/understand, this means no or little effort is
needed from the viewer to read it, which is ideal for
people of a younger generation, who tend to look
for ‘easy’ routes, instead of challenging themselves,
especially when they don’t need to view this.
The structure is quite appealing to my target audience as people
aged 16-24 usually look for simplicity in products like this (as I
found out through my primary audience research). Even though
this isn’t the most simple, it still is simple enough for my audience
to understand easily, with little effort, however still includes
aspect of creative and complex imagery, for example the axe and
face of the character blending into the wall.
The colour of this product appeals
to horror fans, with the blandness
and dullness of the grey/light
brown, however this colour isn’t
stand out or gender specific,
therefore it doesn’t really appeal to
either genders and its only a small
percentage of my target audience
that would appeal to this colour.
The use of red on this poster makes
up for it though, as males and
females both appeal to this gender
neutral colour, and there is a lot of
it on the poster, making it easily
noticeable.
My target audience is people aged 16-24 and people of this
age range, along with males, in my audience appeal to
blood, gore and violence, therefore they see the dripping
blood text and the gore involved with it and see what the
film is likely to entail. They usually appeal to this due to
their ‘immature’ nature, which also links with the use of the
axe in the imagery, which again shows violence and murder
(especially with the blood on the end of the axe).
Audience Appeal – Film Poster 2
The text in this product is very simple and
clear to read, therefore little effort is needed
to understand it, which is ideal for my age
range (16-24), and there is still some
aesthetical qualities to it as well, with the
dripping of the blood off the text, although
this is minimal. This blood appeals to males
and their ‘immature nature’ as they usually
are entertained by the acts of violence, which
this font implies, as this is where the blood
comes from.
The structure is quite appealing to
my target audience as people aged
16-24 usually look for simplicity in
products like this (as I found out
through my primary audience
research). Even though this isn’t the
most simple, it still is simple enough
for my audience to understand
easily, with little effort, however still
includes aspect of creative and
complex imagery, for example the
killer blending into the smoke and
the axe dripping with blood.
Similar to the previous product the colour in this poster doesn’t stand out a lot,
with the different shades of grey used, however this still appeals to the horror
genre and suits the theme nicely. On the other hand, the use of the red against
the grey background makes it stand out more, and this colour is gender neutral,
therefore both genders tend to like this colour. Red is also very horror related
with the connotations of blood and danger, which usually males appeal to more,
as they tend to gain entertainment from violence and gore. This is good because
I have more males than females in my target audience.
I think that my target audience will appeal to
this imagery because it includes the bloody
axe from the film cover, however this time
the axe is dripping with blood, showing the
blood is fresh, meaning he has just killed
somebody, making the viewer want to see
this killing and find out who he killed and why
he killed them. The use of the smoke in the
background and the killer blending in with it
is also very effective because people of a
younger generation tend to appreciate
creative imagery more and also it makes the
image look much more mysterious, as to
where he is and what the smoke is from,
which horror fans love the suspense and
tension that this creates.
Audience Appeal – Film Poster 3
The text in this product appeals to people
who prefer simplicity, which is over half of
my target audience, however this
percentage also includes people who prefer
to be able to read text easily and not to be
challenged by it. However, my text does not
suit these needs, as due to the colour and
size it makes it difficult to read, meaning the
viewer has to strain their eyes to view it,
therefore they likely just won’t bother
attempting to read it. This means that this
could definitely be improved by making it
easier to read.
The structure is quite appealing to my target
audience as people aged 16-24 usually look for
simplicity in products like this (as I found out
through my primary audience research). Even
though this isn’t the most simple, it still is
simple enough for my audience to understand
easily, with little effort, however still includes
aspect of creative and complex imagery, for
example the character’s face fading into the
shadowing background.
The colour of this poster’s background is very appealing to the
horror genre’s fans, and to males of a younger generation, in other
words, the heavy use of the colour black is perfect for my target
audience. The colour of the text, however, is not. This is because it
doesn’t contrast well with the black background, if the
background were lighter than this colour would also be very good
for appealing to my target audience, however it is very difficult to
see therefore the audience doesn’t feel the same connotations
being implied through the colour and the meaning is lost.
The imagery in this product is quite creative yet
very simple, as there is only one image on the
poster, however it fades smoothly into the
shadowing background, therefore is simple yet
effective, which appeals to my younger
generation target audience very well, as they
are ‘wowed’ by simple imagery. The use of the
black eyes also show the emotion, along with
the facial expression, and the tension of the
film and the character, which horror fans
definitely appeal to, as they like to be on edge
and tense during the film and this poster
portrays this feeling for the film, making them
want to watch it.
Audience Appeal – Film Merchandise 1
The text on this product is very minimal and is only included in the
design, as the exact same image from the film cover. This makes the
product less creative, which people don’t appeal to, however it links the
merchandise to the product very well, showing exactly what the
merchandise is promoting and fans of the horror film Axe Of Kindness
would like to promote this film by sharing the title of the name on the
hoodie they are wearing.
The colour of this merchandise (along
with the design) is also ideal for my
target audience (aged 16-24). This is
because this age range doesn’t usually
like standing out from the crowd and
the colours black and white are the
most used colours in clothing in this
generation, compared to bright colours,
such as yellow or green, because these
colours match/suit almost every colour,
therefore you can wear it with anything.
The connotations of these colours link
with the film as well, with the black
portraying death, evil and mystery and
the white portraying the innocence and
naivety of the victims in the film. This
also means that general horror fans will
appeal to these colours as well.
This design appeals to my target
audience a lot. First of all it is very small
and simple, therefore it doesn’t stand out
and people aged 16-24 (my target
audience), usually don’t want to stand
out from the crowd, meaning this simple
design is ideal. Secondly the use of the
axe and the dripping blood appeal to the
males of my target audience, as they like
this type of imagery. Horror fans in
general may also appeal to this design
because it implies violence and death,
therefore it’s obvious that the product
promotes a horror film.
Audience Appeal – Film Merchandise 2
The colour of this merchandise is also
ideal for my target audience (aged 16-24).
This is because this age range doesn’t
usually like standing out from the crowd
and the colours black and white are the
most used colours in clothing in this
generation, compared to bright colours,
such as yellow or green, because these
colours match/suit almost every colour,
therefore you can wear it with anything.
The connotations of these colours link
with the film as well, with the black
portraying death, evil and mystery and the
white portraying the innocence and
naivety of the victims in the film. This also
means that general horror fans will appeal
to these colours as well. This almost
‘makes ups’ for the standing-out of the
design, as you can only see the design
from the front but can see the colour from
every angle.
The use of the axe and the dripping blood
appeal to the males of my target
audience, as they like this type of imagery.
Horror fans in general may also appeal to
this design because it implies violence and
death, therefore it’s obvious that the
product promotes a horror film. However
the size of the design may deter people
from wearing/appealing to this product,
because it stands out quite a bit, when
you see it from the front. But then again,
many people like to stand out, even
though this percentage isn’t as large as
those who don’t want to stand out, some
people still do.
The text on this product is very minimal and is only included in the
design, as the exact same image from the film cover. This makes the
product less creative, which people don’t appeal to, however it links the
merchandise to the product very well, showing exactly what the
merchandise is promoting and fans of the horror film Axe Of Kindness
would like to promote this film by sharing the title of the name on the
hoodie they are wearing and the text is very clear and easy to see on
the large design, covering most of the hoodie.
Audience Appeal – Production Logo
The font of the large letters “HS” are quite effective in appealing to people of a younger generation as
it is quite abstract, like a brush stroke, however it is still fairly simple, which can appeal to people of
an older generation, therefore I can use this logo for all my work, no matter what type of product I

the font of the name in the middle of the logo is a very simple, sans serif font, which is very effective
because it makes it very easy to read and understand, which is important for people to know the
name of the company.
The colour used is very simple
and was chosen for this exact
reason. It appeals to people of
all generations, as everybody
can work with the colour black.
This colour can also be viewed in
many different ways, for
example when it is on a horror
product, the colour black can be
seen as interpreting the
connotations pf death, evil and
mystery, which is effective in
appealing to horror fans.
The simplicity of this design is very
effective in appealing to my audience
because they can see and
understand it clearly. The ‘closure’
technique used also appeals to
younger minds because they like
creativity and ‘puzzle-types’,
however a lot pf people in the
teenage generation also contradict
this view, therefore this design could
go either way. Although, it is still very
useful for marking my work with my
name and showing who created the
products.
Did My Products Meet My
Intentions?
• Overall, I believe that my product did meet my intentions, in terms of the design,
imagery, colours, text and structure used (basically the technical and aesthetical
qualities of the products I made). Although, I did intend on making some products
that I never got round to making due to a lack of time and poor judgement of the
time I had remaining, meaning I couldn’t make them. The products I intended to
make on top of these products were extra merchandise pieces, for example bags,
T-shirts, hats, mugs etc. and I also wanted to create a the murder weapon the
killer is holding in the film cover. I wanted to create this product so it was original
and memorable, and people would see this product and think that it was from this
film. I took this inspiration from my survey responses and from the professional
product Friday The 13th, as Jason (the killer in the film) has a machete, which is
popularly known to be from this film.
• Although this isn’t what I planned the products I did make met my intentions, with
their technical and aesthetic qualities (as I have analysed in detail), which I am
very pleased about. This pleases me because I shows I put a lot of work into my
research and planning and actually following these pre-production sections,
whereas in previous projects I didn’t do this as well, therefore I have worked on my
improvements I have taken from previous projects which pleases me a lot.

Evaluation FMP

  • 2. Research – Collective Theories • The four main graphic design theories I research for my project were: Gestalt theory, Grid theory, the Golden Ratio and Colour Theory. I used all of these theories at least once within the making of my products, for example the Golden Ratio in my Film Poster (at the bottom). The most useful theory I research however, was the Colour theory. Using this theory allowed me to use similar colours, which improved the aesthetics greatly because it made my products look much more professional and the colours all worked well together. • The grid method wasn’t as useful, as it is very basic, therefore if I used it as a template for all my products, then they wouldn’t stand out from the rest (which I wanted them to do). On the other hand because it is very basic, I may have used it without planning on, which isn’t a bad idea because it is used by many professionals, however I didn’t want to plan to use it from the start, as I thought the other theories would be more effective. An example of where I used the grid theory unintentionally is at the bottom and as you can see it is fairly basic and this layout could be improved if I had more time, making it more effective for the viewer to the imagery as a focal point, rather than the title/logo (although this could also be due to colour). • The graphic designers I researched were quite helpful during my production because their beliefs and approaches to work were quite inspiring, for example Lauren Hom stated in an interview “make realistic to-do lists and focus all your attention on one task at a time. This proved to be helpful during my production, as it allowed to me to not lose my ‘train of thought’ and allowed me to finish my products quicker and with more detail because I focused on solely one product at a time with my full attention.
  • 3. Research – Existing Products • My existing products research was likely my most influential and useful aspect of my research. I put a lot of detail into the analyses, which showed I could understand them, meaning the product I create would be up a standard this high. • All of my choices were based on the genre of the film products (horror) and the colours/imagery used within them, as my main product was going to be a film cover, therefore I search horror film covers/posters/logos/merchandise and analysed product that fit this criteria, such as Friday The 13th, The Conjuring and Insidious. I talked about individual aspects of the products. For example some of the aspects I talked about were: the colours used, the image on the product, audience appeal, fonts and the reasons for all of these aspects. I believe that I analysed my existing products in a lot of detail, talking about the aspects and what they show/interpret, how it makes the audience feel and what the audience notices and features I can take from these analyses to use in my own production to make them look as professional as possible, and I even analysed the context of the products, showing where they came from and who made them etc.
  • 4. Research – Existing Products • I talked about similar features all these products have in common, in my summary. This helped with my planning and production because I could follow these examples and use certain aspects, for example I used the same structure for my film cover that were popular on the existing products and I used similar colours that proved to be very effective for appealing to and attracting the audience. • Overall I am very pleased with my existing products research, however if I were to critique it, there is always room for improvement. Even though this likely wouldn’t have been needed, I could have included more products of merchandise and film posters, as I didn’t include a many of these types of products as I did for film covers, however my film cover was my main product for my project, therefore this is understandable.
  • 5. Research – Primary Audience • The next part of my research was audience research. To conduct this research I used a website called ‘SurveyMonkey’. This worked by creating a survey and sending it around class, friends and family etc. for them to complete with the questions created, so I could collect these results, analyse them and understand who my target audience was (age, gender etc.). As you can see the results collected were displayed in bar charts, which made reading the results a lot easier, compared to if I had collected them manually and made it effective and easy to show in my PowerPoint. To discuss the results I obtained, I gave an observation of what the chart shows (the gender/age of my audience etc.). I then discussed what this said about my audience, for example ideas that they like, such as certain colours, themes, styles etc., which is basically just discussing the observation in a bit more detail. Finally I discussed how my product was going to appeal to my audience after reading the results I got, for example if the survey results showed that my audience prefers a simple film poster rather than a busy one with lots of features, I talked about how I can make my film poster simple so it would appeal to my target audience.
  • 6. Research – Primary Audience • I believe that this was very useful, to see what others wanted, as well as researching professional products, giving me a more clear understanding of how I was going to make my work, so it would appeal to my target audience. I think that I mostly appealed to my target audience with my production, as I followed my research findings, during my planning and production, to create something that I wanted but that also appeal to them. • I also think that this was very reliable and useful source of primary research because I shared this survey with all of my class mates, my friends and family, whilst sharing it on social medias, such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, which results me in receiving 77 responses. If I were to be very critical then I could say to achieve a better understanding of my audience then I could have shared the survey more or created multiple surveys with different questions, however I think this was still reliable enough. It is unlikely, however it’s possible that receiving more responses could have resulted in a different final product, as I may have received different answers from these extra responses. As a whole I am happy with what my audience has chosen, as it is what I was hoping for, as I believe they have a good appearance and they were my ideas from the start, as I was intending to create something similar to pre-existing products.
  • 7. Research – Primary Audience • The final part of my primary research was the interviews from class peers. This consisted of asking three people three different questions about my ideas and their opinions on films/horrors, for them to answer in more detail (compared to my survey responses) so I could get a more clear understanding of what my target audience would like to see in my productions and how I can appeal to them more. I am not too pleased with my interviews and I think they could have been conducted better. For example there wasn’t a lot of questions, so I couldn’t get a lot of information of my audience’s views and opinions on my ideas and the horror genre. Another reason why I couldn’t get a lot of information was because I only asked three people, which doesn’t give my sources a lot of variety and left me to assume a lot of my audience’s views. The answers from my class peers were, in my opinion, not very detailed, as they could have written a lot more about what they thought about my ideas and my questions, but instead gave me fairly brief answers, which wasn’t very helpful. However, they gave me enough information for me to work with and understand their opinions, to allow me to follow their views when planning and creating my productions, in order to appeal to my target audience as much as I could. I could have improved these flaws by asking anonymous people of the public (that were a part of my target audience from the survey results) and asking for more detail in their answers. If all of these flaws/implications were to be improved then I would have more success in appealing to my target audience because I would know exactly what my target audience would want to see in my products, which would make my productions much more effective and popular. Although these answers were still helpful for my research, even if they could have been improved greatly.
  • 8. Research – Secondary Audience • The next part of my research was my secondary research and to conduct this I searched online different websites etc. to help me further understand my target audience. I believe the research I conducted in this section was quite helpful, however it could have been improve by a great amount. • I first researched the horror genre in general and what this entails. For example I used a website called StephenFollows.com to 10.6% of all films have been created to fit the horror genre, therefore my audience is already small in the film industry, meaning I had to figure out exactly what they would want to see to appeal to them, as I didn’t really have enough room for assumptions or estimations. I also found the percentages of the film industry that prefer horror to other genres and vise versa.
  • 9. Research – Secondary Audience • Using the 2011 UK Census I found the amount of certain ages living in the area of my production location and where most people would be viewing it, as I wouldn’t be going global with my project and would be sticking to a small location of where I live and where I would be making it. This was very useful to see the exact amount, so I could get an approximation of people who could potentially see and appeal to my products, which you could say isn’t good enough as an approximate answer, however this was the only possibility. I then researched the gender and social class of my target audience, how many were in my target audience location, and how you appeal to them, which again proved to be quite helpful. • If I were to improve this area of my research I would definitely include more detail over the areas of how I can and should appeal to these certain people and how people have done in the past. This would have been much more useful for my planning and production, letting me know exactly who my target audience is and what attracts them. Because of the lack of detail in my secondary research, my summary was fairly short, meaning I couldn’t take a lot of information and inspiration from this research, therefore it wasn’t as helpful as it could have been.
  • 10. Research – Production • The final part of my research was my production research. In this section I research different tutorials I could use for the effects on the imagery using Photoshop and the outcomes I could lead to using these. I researched different structure types (mainly using my existing products research) and created experiment products on Photoshop, using existing images from google and creating the products very briefly. I then research costs of my production, including the props I needed for my photography and equipment etc., even though most of these aspects were provided by the college, I still counted them to show what my project would have cost me, if I were to do it individually. Then moving onto the technical side of my work, I research different video/camera techniques/settings and lighting techniques that would benefit me with my photography, allowing me to create the best imagery I could. I found this section very useful because I wasn’t very experienced in using a camera and the lighting in the studio. I watched tutorials on YouTube and experimented by myself with each piece of equipment to find the best settings for the camera and the best angles and intensity for the lighting. Finally in this section of the research I looked at the availability of the items and locations I wanted to use, for example I needed to book the studio for a certain date and I needed to book the camera to take out of college. This was useful because it allowed me to arrange a specific time to conduct my photography, allowing me to know when it was and be able to plan my other work around these times, allowing time for potential mistakes/mishaps etc. • If I were to complete this section again I would research more potential Photoshop effects and different ways I could go about creating my film cover, for example without using Photoshop. Even though I most likely would have still used Photoshop, it would have been good to show different potential routes for my production.
  • 11. Proposal • The first part of my proposal was discussing my previous projects and work and how these could help and/or influence me with my FMP, for example I talked about the album cover I made, using Photoshop, showing I have had some experience using Photoshop and working to suit a specific audience, however for my FMP I realised I would have to improve the amount of detail in my pre- production and production. I then discussed my project concept, so in other words, what I was going to make (my film cover). This was useful in allowing me to show my specific ideas I had for my project, instead of just a vague print-based project as I described it before starting this. It was also useful to display my initial ideas to others and show the process I went through and where I started with my project. I then discussed how I was going to evaluate it and how it was going to be reviewed, where I mentioned the ongoing self evaluation (developmental diary and production reflection) and the feedback I will receive after showing others my work. • The next step of the proposal was creating a bibliography of all the different websites, books, journals, films, videos etc. I have/will use in my project and displaying the information of these sources after Harvard Referencing them. • My final part of my proposal and likely my most important part, was the production schedule. I created a specific and detailed schedule for my pre-production and production, so I could see if I was behind, ahead or in time with my schedule during my project. This proved to be quite helpful, as I did fall behind my schedule, therefore I realised I needed to work harder and do some more additional work at home (on top of the homework I was already doing). This also allowed me to take note of all the specific tasks I needed to complete for my project and how long I had to complete each task.
  • 12. Problem Solving • This section was very important to conduct before my production time because it gave me the chance to figure out a solution to all possible problems I may encounter during my production. Luckily, I only encountered one problem that I wasn’t expecting during my production (which was the photography location, as I will explain in another section), however there were many aspects of my production that I would have had a problem with if it wasn’t for my problem solving. • To list a few, the problems I was going to encounter were: where to position the lighting in the studio to benefit my photography, which settings to use on the camera to benefit my photography and how to create certain Photoshop effects, using certain tools. To overcome these problems (and all the other problems I was going to encounter and the problems I may have encountered, I came up with a solution to them all. This took a lot of pressure off the situation because I knew I had everything covered with a plan B, if something were to go wrong. This also allowed me to continue with my production and move around an implication quickly, saving time during my production. I included a lot of detail in this section, discussing what my problems are and how I will overcome them sufficiently and then showing how I overcame these problems. For example, I didn’t know which camera settings were ideal for my photography, so I researched different settings and then experimented with my own photography in the studio and in outdoor locations, which I documented in the PowerPoint. This allowed me to note exactly which settings were best for my final photography I would be conducting for my final products. Most of my theoretical problems didn’t occur, however it was good to know I had a backup plan if they did. • I don’t believe I could have improved this section, or if I could I am unaware of how to do this. Either way I don’t think I needed to because it proved to be very sufficient and helpful before and during my production and I am very pleased with it.
  • 13. Planning • The first part of my planning was planning my photography shoot, finance, facilities and material etc. (basically all the physical aspects of my production). This was very helpful as I then didn’t have to think about any of these aspects during my production, as they were all accounted for, therefore during my production I could focus solely on my production and nothing else. A lot of what I planned in this section I had basically already planned in my problem solving, for example the lighting and camera settings/usage for my photoshoot. This meant I didn’t have to spend a lot of time on this section, which allowed me to spend most of my time on the most important section of my planning – the technical and aesthetic elements of my products. • I discussed and planned texts/fonts, colour, imagery and layout plans in detail. I created mind maps for each, where I explored all the potential routes I could take for my product and then I focused my attention on specific ideas I wanted to take forward, for example a certain colour scheme or a certain font choice. I then discussed these individual aspects in detail, talking about why I chose them, what they will provide for my product and how they will appeal to my target audience. This allowed me to make sure I had good enough colours, fonts and imagery etc. to best appeal to my target audience and still be aesthetically pleasing to other viewers, and I believe I have done this well overall.
  • 14. Planning • I think the layout plans I created were very helpful, I first created them using shapes in PowerPoint, and then added images found on Google onto these layout plans to show roughly what my product would look like. This gave me a rough idea of how my product was going to end with, showing me if they suited my ideas and appealed to my target audience. However these layout plans were only really beneficial for my structure planning, as I didn’t focus on the specific imagery and colour is was collecting for the plans. Which could have been an improvement for next time, as this would allow me to get a better view of how my product would look like before actually creating it. • Overall I think that my planning was very helpful during my production as I didn’t have to think of how or what to create and just did it, saving me a lot of time and effort, meaning I could use this spare time and effort on other areas (such as my production reflection). The most useful part of my planning was the colours and text/fonts idea developments because the amount of detail I included made it much easier to see how I was going to create my products and appeal to my target audience (which was the overall goal).
  • 15. Developmental Diary • This was suggested to be written weekly, however I decided to write my diary daily so I could remember the specific tools I used on Photoshop or the specific website I used that day etc. This also allowed me to discuss my day in a lot more detail and talk about my feelings/opinions on the work I produced that day. • This worked for a week or so, as I left enough time at the end of the day write my diary, however after a while I either forgot to write my diary or didn’t have time because I was caught up with the work I was doing that day, this meant that I was behind on my diary days and I had to write them days later, meaning I forgot some specific details that would have been good to include. This isn’t a huge problem however, because it would have been a lot less detailed if I were to write these diaries weekly and I still remembered most of the details from the days I missed the dairies for. • Looking back, I should have written my developmental diaries when I got home or later that night if I missed them that working day, which I would do if I were to complete this project again or in my future projects. • A problem with my diaries were I didn’t write my diary day if I completed work at home, for example on my days off the college schedule or if I was too ill to go into college and completed some work at home. I most likely should have done this for my homework as well, which would have been interesting to see the extra diary days and the details I would have included. This would have also greater showed my process throughout my project as the days at home were not accounted for, therefore some work was created with no self-evaluation on the process. • I also found these diaries very tedious, which may have been because I was evaluating my day incorrectly, however with what I created, I found quite repetitive and not needed for myself. In a future project I think o will either self evaluate differently or not complete developmental diaries until actually creating my products.
  • 16. Production Reflection • Like my developmental diary, I discussed my production days daily and in a good amount of detail. I did this to show the process of my production and the product I was working on, discussing the specific tools and techniques I was using. This was useful in showing others how I resulted in my final products, the steps I took and the mishaps I encountered with Photoshop and how I overcame them. • However, a problem with this, similar to my developmental diary, is I worked on some of my production at home and all the work I did at home I didn’t discuss in my production reflection in as much detail as I did for the work I did in College. This is because I completed my production reflection days during College times, therefore I may have forgotten certain tools I used etc. at home, as they were on a different day to when I wrote about them. • Another similar problem to my developmental diaries I encountered with my production reflection, were missing days for either getting caught up in work and not having enough time during college times to discuss my production day or simply forgetting to complete the production reflection days. This was a problem as I had to then discuss them a different day, meaning I didn’t remember exactly what I did and what tools I sued etc., although I remembered most of the details. • Again I should have written my production reflection days when I got home or later that night if I missed the opportunity to complete them during class time, which would prevent me from falling behind on them, which I would definitely do if I were to complete this project again or in future projects.
  • 17. Peer Feedback • My peer feedback was very helpful during my production and I am pleased I conducted it because it allowed me to improve my products before finishing them, suing the feedback/advice from my peers who were in my target audience. • The amount of detail given in the answers were a big improvement compared to the answers I received in my interviews in my primary audience research. The detail was helpful because I could see their views/opinions much more clearer, allowing me to improve my products to a standard that suited them perfectly. Some improvement advice wasn’t helpful however, for example one person said I needed to create a short trailer for the film, however my project is solely print based, therefore I wouldn’t creating any video format products. Another stated that I needed to make the background of my film cover brighter, however this contradicted the views and opinions of the other two peers and the rest of my target audience that I researched at the start of the project, so I decided to disregard this advice, however I was grateful for the effort. • As you can see in the second image at the bottom I acted upon the improvement advice I was given and I am very happy with he outcomes and I believe they have been improved well, thanks to my peers. • To take it a step further I created a survey and shared it with more family and friends and the third image shows the results I collected, however I didn’t have time to act upon the advice given, which is very disappointing and if I had more time I would have definitely acted on this. In future projects I will make sure to leave more time for improvements.
  • 18. Methods Used (tutorials etc.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htyNVBaMQ1A • The sewn mouth effect tutorial on YouTube was the main and most important tutorial I followed/looked at during this project. Below are screenshots from the process in the tutorial video and I think that this video was very helpful in allowing me to create the effect (also shown at the bottom). The voiceover in the video was very clear and easy to understand, allowing me to follow the tutorial smoothly. It took me a while to create this effect because my image has different proportions and colours to the example image the tutorial works on, therefore I had to change some colours slightly and the positioning of certain brush strokes. This sometimes went wrong and made it look very amateurish, which is where my emotional problem came from (discussed on a later slide). Because it sometimes went wrong I had to recreate that certain brush stroke, for example, multiple times, therefore taking up more of my production time. As a whole I am pleased I followed this tutorial as it allowed me to create my most important feature of my main FMP product, and as seen in my feedback, many other people also appreciate the creativity and the aesthetics of this sewn mouth effect.
  • 19. Missed Opportunities • I planned to use the studio and the Knavesmire Woods for my photography locations. However I could not use the wooded location due to personal reasons from my client, therefore I was unable to photograph my model in this area. I did however manage to work around this, however if my plan A went to plan then my product may have ended a lot better in terms of its imagery and background. • To overcome this problem I went to the Knavesmire Woods (location 2) on my own with the camera I booked to use from College and took the photos without the model, for the background images etc. then using the photos I took in the studio at York College of my model, I edited the model into the photos of the wooded background on Photoshop. This ended fairly well and the outcome looked good, however I believe that if I was able to take photos of my model in the location then this would have been much better and the imagery would have looked much more realistic. • After completing my production this was the only major problem involving missed opportunities, therefore in hindsight it went well overall, however it could always have gone better.
  • 20. Technical Problems • A technical problem I faced during my project was my memory stick not having enough storage to save my film cover as a psd file (Photoshop file), which was quite inconvenient. This was because I had included a lot of detail in my film cover, therefore the file size was increasing every time I added another feature or added more detail etc. because I had a lot of layers in my Photoshop document. To cut down the file size I deleted unwanted layers, for example images that I had duplicated and then pressed the ‘hide’ icon on the original photo layer, therefore was not being used. I duplicated the layer for safe keeping, in case I made a mistake on the layer I was editing I could always go back and start again on the original photo layer, however when I finished a certain aspect I didn’t go back and delete the original layer and I just left the layer on ‘hidden’, meaning my file size wasn’t decreasing (which is why I had to go back and remove them all at once). • My photoshop file reached a point where I had no unwanted layers or unwanted aspects in the file and it was still too big to fit on my memory stick, so to deal with this problem I saved my work on OneDrive because this was able to hold my document file of my film cover and the location was accessible wherever I work, as you only needed connection to the internet, therefore I was able to complete some Photoshop work on my film cover product at home, saving me more time during class. • This was the only technical problem that occurred, to my knowledge, during my production, meaning it overall ran fairly smoothly, on the technical side and I was able to complete my work at a constant rate without having to stop or start again due to technical problems, allowing me to have all the time I had left myself for production, on production and all the time I had left myself for planning etc. on that.
  • 21. Management Problems • I only had one client to work with that I was responsible for, therefore the potential problems were minimal involving my production. However as I mentioned in my missed opportunities, I was unable to conduct my photography with my model at location 2 (the Knavesmire Woods). This meant I had to conduct the photography individually and edit the images in Photoshop, using the images from the studio (the photography at the location my model was able to attend). • There weren’t any other management problems, as all the other aspects of management were handled well, as I planned for this, for example booking the studio and booking equipment, and there were no problems with this. This made my production run smoothly with very little implications occurring overall and the management team at the college being very helpful throughout the project made it a lot easier, as I had most of my questioned answered in terms of production and pre-production.
  • 22. Emotional Problems • During my production I did encounter an emotional problem involving my film cover. I spent a lot of time and effort working on the sewn mouth effect, to then decide that it isn’t good enough and it doesn’t suit my film cover or the intentions I was trying to portray. I was close to starting again on the imagery and creating another effect. However if I had done this, this would have wasted days of my production time and even more days creating a new effect to replace the original one. I simply did not have time for this implication, so I asked my peers and my teacher and all were positive regarding the sewn mouth effect and said that it looks very realistic and suits the film cover well. This changed my viewpoint of the effect and my film cover as a whole and I was then able to carry on with the rest of the film cover, finalizing the creative effect on the model. • In the end, I am very pleased my peers and teacher managed to convince me my work was up to a high standard, as this saved me a lot of time and future implications that could have occurred if I had created another effect. For example these implications could have been: which effect to create, is the new effect good enough, does the new effect suit my film cover, does it portray the same meaning and also problems actually creating the effect, such as my inability to use a certain tool on Photoshop that the effect needed.
  • 23. Time Management • I believe that my time management couldn’t have been improved that much, however my self-ability to follow the time management I had in place could have been improved. The detail I included in my pre-production PowerPoints, show that I spent a lot of time and effort into these areas, however it took me a lot longer than it should have to create these because I found myself wasting time during lesson, by not being able to focus all the time. • I created a production schedule to help me with my time management and this worked for part of my pre- production and production but on some areas, such as research, I spent more time than accounted for, meaning I fell behind on my schedule and had to work faster and harder to catch up and it meant starting new areas, such as planning, before I had finished my previous section, which was not ideal, however this proved to have paid off, after finishing my research because it included a lot of detail, which I wouldn’t have included if I worked on it for less time. • The overall management was around one week per section (research, problem solving etc.) and just under three months for production, however I didn’t spend all of the time allocated for production on my production as I was still finishing previous sections, meaning I had less time for my products and I was behind on my production schedule. This resulted in not creating as many products as I had hoped for, for example I didn’t create as many different types of merchandise as I wanted to. On the other hand, I did spend a lot of time on one product (my film cover), which may have been too long, but this was my main and most important product, therefore I wanted this to be the best and after all the time and effort I spent on this product I think I have achieved this.
  • 24. Time Management • If I was to complete my project again then I think I would try and work a little faster to prevent falling behind schedule. I would also do more work at home (outside of College times) because I think if I caught up my work at home more (as I already did do some work at home) then I wouldn’t have had to catch up during my production time, meaning I may have been able to create more products. • I believe that some of my products would have been improved if I had more time to work on them, however some of them are up to where I wanted them to be (for example my film cover and production logo). I do believe that I improved my PowerPoints as much as I could, a part from my planning, which could have been improved using more detail in my ideas section. For example I could have explored more colour schemes and imagery styles/themes and the outcomes that I could have led to if I went through with those ideas. I could also discuss the potential opinions/views that the audience may have had on these aspects of my products compared to the aspects I chose, therefore saying the positives and negatives of these potential colour schemes, imagery styles and layout plans etc. • Overall I am fairly pleased with the work I have created in the time I was given, however I was rushing a lot, which I might not have been if I worked a little harder/faster during class time, then I may not have fallen behind on my schedule.
  • 26. Technical Qualities – Film Cover (comparison) The structure of my product is very similar to the structure of the professional product. For the front cover the title is large and bold at the bottom and the imagery is the main aspect of the cover with the detail and spookiness it brings. Then finally the tagline at the top is positioned the same as well, showing my film cover’s structure looks very professional, meaning the layout is easy to understand and effective for the viewer to look at all the information and imagery appropriately. The back cover is also structure very similarly, with the credit section covering the bottom half of the page, with almost unreadable information (as it’s not important for the viewer) and the imagery and text above it, linking together as w whole. This further proves that the appearance of my film cover looks somewhat professional. The text on my film cover has its similarities and differences to the professional cover. First of all the title at the bottom is very large and noticeable, with the contrasting colour to the background and the large lettering. However, the font choice is very different to mine, as my title’s font is more abstract and unique, where as this is very simple. This doesn’t have to be a negative thing however, because both films have different plots/features, therefore a simple font may suit that film a lot better. The taglines at the top of the front and back covers are fairly hard to read and don’t stand out in the professional product, which is quite similar to my product, making more important information (the other films) stand out more. The blurb on the professional product is hard to read as it doesn’t contrast well with the background, whereas mine is very clear and contrasting, although because it’s a back cover, features don’t need to stand out. The imagery on the front covers show different designs and image styles on both products, however I believe the intentions are very similar. Both images have props included to suggest the occupation/setting of the character and the location. Both images feature contradictory and mysterious aspects. For example my cover has a sewn mouth, whilst the tagline reads “be quiet” and the professional product has a doll as a prop in a horror cover, which are normally portrayed as friendly as they are a children’s toy. Another aspect that is similar is the use of a colour scheme and the use of different shades of one colour throughout the product. In the professional product a beige/brown colour is used, linking the front and back cover together so you know they are from the same film, no matter which side of the cover you look at. The colour of the clothing in this product is also following the colour scheme (on the back cover). I have also done this with the colour green and red, which I have applied to my foreground and background imagery on the front cover and tinted the images in red on the back cover. I think that this makes my product look professional because the colour schemes have been used in a very similar way. Although in my opinion, I think that the use of the professional product’s colour scheme works better for a generic horror film, however I also appreciate the aesthetics of mine as well.
  • 27. Technical Qualities – Film Poster 1 (comparison) A reason why these two products don’t look as similar as they could is because Sinister is a film cover and my product is just an advert poster. However there are still some similarities between them. The imagery on these products are quite different, as my product has a background with images placed on top (edited) and Sinister includes one image with multiple features within it, meaning they only used one photograph. Although the imagery is different the same intention is portrayed. Both products include the main character, involved with blood, showing what the films are going to involve. This allows horror fans to be attracted by the visuals of blood and violence, which is very effective from both my product and the professional product. A difference with the imagery is the way the professional product leaves a lot of mystery, by not showing the face of the character on the cover and not showing who’s blood it is or what weapon was used. This is different because I have included the murder weapon and the character’s face, which answers a lot of questions, that didn’t need to be answered, which therefore could be an improvement for next time. The colours used in both these products are very similar; a shaded beige/grey colour. This colour is effective because it is quite bland, therefore doesn’t portray many meanings through connotations. This emptiness the colours leave can relate to horror fans because it brings fear to them, not knowing what the colour is for, why it is used etc. Also, many professional horror films sue this colour, therefore if you see this colour on a film cover, then it is likely to be in the horror genre and fans will notice this quickly, making it very effective. The colour of the texts are quite different, however both follow a colour scheme of 2-3 colours, that relate to the imagery on their product. The blood on Sinister is very dark, which is why it works well with the dark title, whereas the text on my product is light, therefore works better with my bright blood on the imagery (and the title). A similar effect is used for the text that are made to be focal points. This effect is a dripping from the letters, however my product’s text emphasises this much more than the professional product. On the other and you could say that the Sinister’s text is smudged, rather than dripping, but either way, the lettering is edited in a similar way, which makes it appear more eerie. As done on the professional product, it may have been better for me to position the dripping text at the top of the page because the dripping leads the viewer’s eyes to the next aspect to look at, however for my product this is the bottom of the page. The professional product executes this nicely, as It leads to the imagery. The structure of these products are fairly different, however as I have stated they were produced for different reasons. The structure of the imagery however is fairly similar. When looking at them as a whole, you can see the grid theory has been used, with aspects of the imagery positioned on each side of the product, instead of in the center. The positioning of the title is at the bottom (off-center) but is still a focal point, which is the same for the professional product, apart from the position is at the top rather than the bottom.
  • 28. Technical Qualities – Film Poster 2 (comparison) The imagery in these products are the aspects that are the most similar between these two products. The photography, structure of the image and posing of the model are almost identical. The only thing different in the imagery is the background and the costume. For the background in the professional product, the photograph was taken at the location, whereas I added the smoke after the photography. You could say this makes my product look less professional because the location/setting for my product is unknown, however this also brings mystery because of the unknown. The lighting in the imagery is used a lot more effectively in the professional product, compared to my product, because it emphasises certain aspects (such as the killer’s mask), which mine does not. His could be a good improvement if I had more time, as the poster as a whole looks very equal and bland throughout, with certain aspects only standing out due to the positioning of the smoke. The overall structure of both of these products are very similar, as I used Friday he 13th as inspiration. The imagery is the main focal point positioned in the middle of the page and covering the majority of it. Where the professional product displays the title, I have displayed my tagline because I only included the title as a logo, small and in the corner. I think the title logo stands out too much in my opinion as this wasn’t supposed to be a focal point. Other than this, I think my product is very similar to the professional product’s structure and focal points, therefore making my product look professional. Along with the imagery, the colours on the professional product make certain aspects stand out more, to put emphasis on them, which may have been useful for me to do. I have not included any contrasting or bright colours, meaning no aspects fully stand out, however this can also be seen as a good thing because it sets the mood for the horror style and makes everything eerie and mysterious. Although in my opinion, I believe that the professional product’s use of contrasting colours in the imagery is more effective, bringing attention to specific aspects (e.g. the killers mask). The colours of the title are the same, however I lowered the opacity on my title, to fit the design theme of the poster, whereas in the other product the title stands out a lot more as it is sharper and more clear, meaning it is easier to see for the viewer, which may have been useful for my product. The design style on both of these products are quite similar (as I used this for inspiration). The imagery is very simple, yet still creates mystery and spooks the viewer, which is the intention for a horror design. This shows that my product has a very similar design to a professional product’s design, however the execution of the imagery/colours may not have been created to a standard as high as this product.
  • 29. Technical Qualities – Film Poster 3 (comparison) The imagery on both products use a similar effect of shadowing sections of the character’s face, as it makes the poster look creepy because you can’t see all of their face. These images are the only images on the products, putting more focus on them and they both blend well with the background. As you can see my image has been edited in Photoshop to create this effect, however the professional product’s imagery looks more realistic, as if the shadow was there during the photography (which it may have been), which is an area I could have improved if I had more time to work on this piece. Finally both images can be interpreted to have multiple meanings, for example hiding from something or seeking prey (victims). The structure of both of these products are very similar, besides the location of the title, compared to my tagline, which could be excused for the fact that my product is a poster and the other product is a film cover. The image is large in a central position in both products, which empahsises the use of the image as a main focal point. This allows the viewer to be enticed by the image and then be encouraged to read the information (with the title/tagline. Because my overall product looks similar to the structure of the professional product’s, this means that my layout is of a professional standard, which clearly is effective, otherwise it wouldn’t be popular. The tagline on my poster is the same as my first poster and my film cover, which links all the products and make the tagline known to the movie, which is also what the professional product does. The font for the tagline on my poster is quite basic, however this fits with the theme of this poster (simplicity). Again, this is similar to the professional product, using a fairly basic font for the title, to fit with the basic (yet effective) imagery. The only difference between the two is the colour. Compared to Don’t Be Scared, the colours I used could be improved greatly. For example the colour of the tagline makes it very difficult to see or read, therefore it does not stand out, whereas the title on the professional product does, with the bright red colour against the dark black background. I did not want my tagline to stand out, however I wanted it to be noticeable and when looking at the poster as a whole, next to the other product, the tagline is not clear at all. The colour of the imagery is controversial because you could say that the yellow tint gives the image a bit of life, which the professional product’s imagery doesn’t, however you could also say this contradicts the theme of the poster being ‘bland’ and ‘mysterious’. However, either way, I think the imagery is very effective in both products.
  • 31. Aesthetic Qualities – Film Cover (1) The imagery in this film cover is the main focal point and the most important part, as it is the first aspect the viewer sees when looking at the product. The detail on the imagery is likely the main reason for why it is so aesthetically pleasing to the viewer because it makes the image look very realistic, therefore professional. The sewn mouth effect used the most detailed part and this part of the image creates a lot of tension. The use of the stitching on the mouth can be interpreted in different ways. First of all the viewer doesn’t know if the character is the killer, however makes this assumption from the use of the prop (axe) and the scary feel/mood the image creates. Not knowing the for definite who the character is, the viewer now feels fear, from the mystery of the character. On top of this, the stitching creates much more mystery and fear, making the audience question: why is his mouth stitched? Who stitched it? What is the stitching for? Etc. Another way the stitching can be interpreted is with the killer being psychotic and demonic enough, to a point of sewing his own mouth (for unknown reasons at the moment), which makes the viewer want to watch the film to find out why and also because they know blood and gore will be involved. Finally the stitching can be seen as a voice control (however the audience doesn’t know who would be controlling him). This interpretation also links with the tagline “keep quiet, you’re safe”. The use of the prop in the imagery is effective in showing the audience what the film will involve, especially with the feature of blood on the axe, showing this is a murder weapon and blood, gore and violence will be involved in the film, which many horror fans appeal to. The aesthetics of the axe is also very pleasing as it looks very realistic, with the shining metal and shadowing on part of the weapon. Linking with the prop, the background and the costume creates the setting/scene for the film, implying the killer is a lumberjack, as he is in a wooded area, with an axe and wearing the stereotypical lumberjack attire. This gives insight into the plot of the film, showing the killings are liking going to take place in a wooded area which is very spooky (much like Friday the 13th, which was a very popular horror film, due to the filming location). On the back cover the images are quite small, however they have been edited to fit nicely together on the back over, fading into the background, making it more aesthetically pleasing when looking at it as a whole, meaning the viewer is likely to continue looking at it and see all the other features of the cover (the blurb etc.). These images also allow the audience to see some of the other characters, giving more insight into the film.
  • 32. The colour used in this product could have been used better with more emphasis on a specific colour on the front page for example, as there are a few different, but no stand out colours. On one hand the cover has a good appearance, with the dark/gloomy look of the dull colours, following suit of the horror theme. However on the other hand, the lack of strong, stand out colours means people are less likely to see the product because it doesn’t catch their eye, therefore these colours may have been more effective for a film poster, instead of the front cover. The colour scheme in this product also includes a lot of red, which portrays blood, anger, danger and also love (which is contradictory to the other connotations but still links to the title). The colour green is also a big colour in this product and it is displayed as a dark green, with a lot of shadowing and darkness. This can be seen by the viewer as a nature location and setting, but with a horrible twist, almost as if the killer is going to use the nature against them because he knows the nature location much more (as his profession, a lumberjack, is located in this area). Finally the colour white is used in the majority of the text. The main reason for is to make it stand out so it is easier to read, with it contrasting against the dark background. However you can also view it as showing the innocence and naivety of the victims (or even the killer, if you read into the film more, creating mystery and wonder as to what he’s murdering for). The white is used on the word “Kindness”, which obviously is a positive word, with a colour that portrays positive connotations, again showing the possibility of the killer being the innocent/naïve one. Aesthetic Qualities – Film Cover (2)
  • 33. Aesthetic Qualities – Film Cover (3) The structure of this film cover is very effective. The main imagery is positioned in the center, allowing the viewer to see this first and be intrigued by the creativeness and spookiness the image brings. The title is bold and clear at the bottom of the page, allowing the viewer to see this clearly, after looking at the imagery. The taglines are positioned at the top of the page, as these are the least important information on the front cover, in small text. Although, they are still easily noticeable due to the colour of them against the contrasting background. Moving onto the side cover, this is supposed to be very simple, and I believe this is simple yet effective because the pitch black background, with the white and red text over it makes the title stand out, meaning if the DVD were to be placed side on amongst other DVDs then this film would stand out (obviously depending on the other DVDs), but it would still have a very good chance. The title is the main aspect of the side cover, and then showing the other information such as the production company and the age rating towards the bottom, as this isn’t as important as the title. Finally the back cover is structured the best out of the three sub-covers, in my opinion. This is because it looks the most professional, with the credit section at the bottom helping this view greatly. The images are somewhat abstract on the back cover, instead of placed in symmetrical boxes, which I think brings the back cover to life a lot more than boxes would. I then placed the blurb (fitted well with the images) at the top in clear writing, as this is the second most important aspect of the back cover, after the imagery that the viewer is intrigued by. When looking at the product as a whole I think this looks very professional and the structure has been created well to suit the audience’s needs when looking at films covers, leading them to information using the imagery etc.
  • 34. Aesthetic Qualities – Film Cover (4) Finally the text is a big part of my product. First of all the title was created with an aggressive, ‘sliced’ font, almost as if the killer created it by carving it with his axe. The title is also very clear to read in big, bold and stand-out letters, which is good because the double meaning within the title is effective in enticing the viewer to want to watch it. The double meaning comes from the use of the word “axe”, as it is a play on words and sounds like the famous phrase ‘acts of kindness’ but is instead switched with the murder weapon in the film. This also leaves the viewer questioning why is it kindness? How can murder by kind? Etc. This mystery and wonder the viewer is left with is very effective in making them want to read more and making them want to watch the film. Next, the tagline at the top has been created effectively, making the title of the films also created by the same company, stand out more, as these a popular films, the viewer will see these and want to watch the film. The use of the font on this tagline is also very effective because it is dripping and the title of the films stand out because they are in capital letters and this font makes capital letters bold and have much more dripping of whatever substance the viewer imagines (most likely blood). The taglines below look very professional as the font used is a very similar one to the font professional covers usually use. The names of the critiques are placed below their quote in small writing, again making it look more professional. The final tagline of the front cover is very effective as it is somewhat confusing but also very eerie, making the viewer feel fear and want to find out what it means. Moving onto the back cover, the text in the credit section looks very professional, even if it is hard to read, this is how it appears in many professional products. Then onto the blurb, this could be improved aesthetically, possibly by giving it a more interesting font, however this may have made it harder to read. Overall this is the only text aspect of my cover that looks ‘unfinished’ in my opinion.
  • 35. Aesthetic Qualities – 1st Film Poster (1) The imagery in this product is quite effective because it, the broken/destroyed/attacked background holds the image of the who you presume is the killer and the murder weapon, creating a lot of tension and bringing a lot of fear. The fact that the character’s mouth is covered with what looks to be duct tape, is very eerie, because it makes you wonder why he has duct tape over his mouth and who put it there. This also relates to the text “keep quiet, you’re safe”, as the character is keeping quiet with the duct tape over his mouth, making you think is this the image of the character who smeared the blood on the wall. The eyes on the character are also shaded with a red colour, implying either evil or an act of violence has been conducted against him, showing the aggression of the killer (if it’s the character on the poster or not). The use of the axe blending into the background is quite creative as well, as it shows the murder weapon, especially as it has blood stains on it, giving the audience and insight into what the film entails, along with eh blood all over the poster. The structure of this poster is somewhat contradictory to the typical poster, as the main text is positioned to the right of the page at the bottom and the imagery is placed on either side of the poster covering the majority of the poster. Then finally, the title of the film is placed in the top right corner, standing out due to its bright colouring. Although, this still works, as the viewer sees the imagery and text all at once (as a whole), which is ideal because they are all linking, as they are all blending into the wall or smeared on it.
  • 36. Aesthetic Qualities – 1st Film Poster (1) The colour in this product is aesthetically pleasing but could also be improved. The background colour of the wall (the light brown/grey) is very bland and desaturated, which doesn’t stand out and is quite boring to look at, however it suits the horror genre very well, as it doesn’t portray many connotations, therefore creating mystery. On the other hand, this colours doesn’t stand out, therefore it isn’t a positive aspect because it doesn’t excite the viewer or make them look twice. The colour of the red balances this out quite well however, because the red is used quite a lot, as blood on the wall, on the text, on the axe and on the character. Even though the imagery is blood the connotations of blood’s colour (red) still portray the idea of blood, danger and evil, which are all perfect for a horror product. The aesthetics of the text in this poster are quite good in my opinion. The effect used with the quote “keep quiet, you’re safe” is very creative and realistic, making it very effective portraying a spooky/eerie mood. The text appears to be smeared blood on the wall, which implies the killer has done this with the blood of his victims, meaning there is murder and violence in the film. This also shows the power of the killer, as he is taunting the rest of the people with the smeared blood, making the viewer fearful of the killer and his actions to his victims, creating a lot of tension. On the other hand, you could view this as one of the victims smearing their own blood from a wound after escaping the killer and trying to save the other people, giving them advice to “keep quiet”. This leaves a lot of mystery and unanswered questions, making the viewer want to watch the film to find out. The title in the top corner shows where the poster is from and what film it is advertising, however compared to the rest of the poster this looks too ‘placed on’ and doesn’t look part of the poster. An improvement could be to change the sizing of the title in the corner, so it doesn’t cover as much space and doesn’t stand out as much as it does.
  • 37. Aesthetic Qualities – 2nd Film Poster (1) The structure of this poster is very simple, which is very effective. There are not a lot of features on the poster, just the imagery, tagline and logos, this makes it very clear that it’s a poster rather than a film cover, and shows it’s purpose is purely for the aesthetics, rather than to provide information. The structure allows the viewer to notice the imagery first, which is ideal because it is the most important aspect of the poster because it is intriguing for the viewer. It then allows the viewer to notice the tagline, enticing the viewer even more, making them wonder what it means and who it applies to. Once again, for this product, the imagery is the most important part of this piece of work. First of all the facial expression on the killer’s face is very serious and doesn’t show much emotion, which is very spooky and mysterious. Then moving onto the use of the axe that the killer is holding, it adds to the scariness of the poster, as it’s a murder weapon. Dripping from the murder weapon is what appears to be blood, implying this character has killed people with the axe (and the demonic expression on his face). Finally, the use of the smoke in the background and the killer blending in with it is also very effective aesthetically and it also makes the image look much more mysterious, as to where he is and what the smoke is from, which horror fans love the suspense and tension that this creates.
  • 38. Aesthetic Qualities – 2nd Film Poster (2) The text in this poster is easy to read, in a what looks to be a simple font when looking at the poster as a whole, however when looking closely, you can see that the font is dripping blood. The dripping is presumed to be blood from the imagery. This is quite effective linking with the horror genre and the film’s features. The tagline “silence is key” is quite spooky and creates a lot of tension for the viewer because this implies that the killer is out looking for his victims and the other people are trying to be quiet, whilst hiding from the killer, which is fearful for the victims and the viewer. Similar to the previous product, the colour in the background is quite bland with the grey smoke, which is good and bad. It suits the horror genre and style, but doesn’t stand out very well. However if it were to stand out then this would not have been great aesthetically because it wouldn’t have fit the smoke and the interpretation the smoke brings (its mystery). The grey background allows the red colouring of the text, blood and costume to stand out more, allowing the blood, danger and evil connotations the colour red portrays.
  • 39. Aesthetic Qualities – 3rd Film Poster (1) The text in this product is not very effective because it is difficult to read, unless you are very close to the poster, due to the dark colour of the text against the dark background. The actual phrase is quite eerie as you don’t know who it applies to or who is saying it and it brings tension to the poster because it implies that the victims are needing to be quiet to survive, making the viewer wonder if they do survive or not. The imagery in this product is quite creative yet very simple, as there is only one image on the poster, however it fades smoothly into the shadowing background, therefore is simple yet effective, as people are ‘wowed’ by the simple imagery. The use of the black eyes also show the emotion, along with the facial expression, and the tension of the film/character. It creates tensions, as it appears that the character is shouting, and it makes you wonder is he shouting in fear or anger, is he shouting at the victims or the killer and what he is shouting.
  • 40. Aesthetic Qualities – 3rd Film Poster (2) The structure of this poster is very simple, which is very effective. The colour of the background is very effective, as it portrays the connotations of mystery, death and power, which are all aspects of the poster and the film this product is promoting. The fading into the black background also link with the mystery of the colour black. The colour of the text is not very effective because it is too dark to notice easily, therefore you need to focus on it to read it, which shouldn’t be the case, however this also emphasizes the imagery, which is the most important part of the poster anyway.
  • 41. Aesthetic Qualities – Film Logo This is the same title as the title in the film cover, therefore provides the same effect. The title was created with an aggressive, ‘sliced’ font, almost as if the killer created it by carving it with his axe. The colour of this logo is very effective, with black bringing many connotations relating to the film cover and the horror genre as a whole. For example black shows power, evil, death and mystery, all of which are involved in the film and are shown in the film cover. The colour red is also displayed in the title and the blood, which also bring connotations that relate to the film and the same connotations and colour that the film cover shows. These are danger, evil and blood (which is even shown in its physical form in the design, dripping off the axe). Finally the colour white is shown in the title as well (as it’s exactly the same as the title in the film cover), therefore having the same connotations, such as innocence, naivety etc. that the victims in the film may have. The design for this uses the title from the film cover and applying it onto a silhouette of an axe. The faded edges of the axe makes it look more interesting, as the axe almost fades it’s background (working best against a black or white background. The use of the axe, relates the product to the film and the blood, shows it’s a horror and again links it with the killings in the film.
  • 42. Aesthetic Qualities – Film Merchandise 1 The simplicity of this merchandise product is quite effective, because it’s easy to understand, see and work with. Many people in my target audience (age 16-24) don’t like to stand out, therefore a simple design means they can wear this product without being noticed easily by others, which is ideal. The simplicity of the product also means that you can wear it with various items of clothing, and they still work well together, whereas if it were brightly coloured with heavy imagery covering the hoodie, this would make it hard to match to other items of clothing. The structure for this product is very simple, as it only includes one aspect, which is the film logo. I positioned it on the left side of the hoodie, in the corner and as I described in the design section, this makes it very subtle, which is ideal for my target audience as they don’t want to stand out. The colour of these jumpers are mainly for aesthetic reasons and to allow the products to fit with other items of clothing, however they still relate to the film. For example the black has connotations of evil, power, death and mystery. These are all aspects included in the film cover, however it is difficult to show these connotations because many people prefer to wear black clothing anyway. The white colour is also portrayed in the film cover, with the text and ‘innocence/naivety’ of the characters in the film. However, again this is difficult to show through the clothing because many people prefer to wear this popular colour anyway. The text on this product is the same image from the film cover, therefore it is exactly the same just with a different background, however the analysis I gave of the title in my film cover still applies. The imagery for this product is the logo I created for the film, using the title from the film cover and applying it onto a silhouette of an axe. The faded edges of the axe makes it look more interesting, as the axe almost fades into the hoodie, however this is a little different for the white hoodie because it doesn’t fade as well as the black. The use of the axe, relates the product to the film and the blood, shows it’s a horror and again links it with the killings in the film.
  • 43. Aesthetic Qualities – Film Merchandise 2 The simplicity of this merchandise product is quite effective, because it’s easy to understand, see and work with. This design compared to the previous design is more stand out, due to the size of the imagery, however this is the only aspect of the product, meaning it’s still fairly simple. The text on this product is the same image from the film cover, therefore it is exactly the same just with a different background, however the analysis I gave of the title in my film cover still applies. The structure for this product is a little different to the previous merchandise product, however the design is still the same. The logo in this product is large and positioned in the center of the hoodie, which makes it stand out a lot more than the previous product, and makes it much less subtle. However, this is not a bad thing because many people like to show what they are wearing and like for it to stand out a little, as the colours of the hoodies makes it more subtle, compared to if the colours were bright yellow for example.
  • 44. Aesthetic Qualities – Production Logo The font of the large letters “HS” are quite effective in appealing to people of a younger generation as it is quite abstract, like a brush stroke, however it is still fairly simple, which can appeal to people of an older generation, therefore I can use this logo for all my work, no matter what type of product I produce, which is very useful. This allows me to professionally mark all of my work with my name. the font of the name in the middle of the logo is a very simple, sans serif font, which is very effective because it makes it very easy to read and understand, which is important for people to know the name of the company. The colour used are very simple and was chosen for this exact reason. It appeals to people of all generations, as everybody can work with the colour black. This colour is also very effective because it can work with every other colour, as the gaps in the letter and the name “HAASE” are spacing in the letters, even though they look like white colouring, just because the logo is against a white background. This means I can place it over any product of any colour I create, which is very useful. The design of this logo is very aesthetically pleasing and works quite effectively. It uses the technique ‘closure’ on the letter “S” because the letter isn’t fully complete, however you can still realise it’s an “S”, therefore the viewer’s mind automatically connects the missing parts of the letter. The spacing in the “S” and the horizontal line in the “H” leaves a good area for the name to be placed, instead of above or underneath the large letters. This creates a good link between them and makes it look like a sufficient and professional logo. This design also makes it very memorable because it’s easy to remember but still looks very creative.
  • 46. Audience Appeal – Film Cover As I mentioned in the colour section, the text is very easy to read, making it ideal for a younger generation. The reason it’s easy to read is the contrasting colour compared to its background, the simplicity of the font and the boldness of the text. This is all apart from the credit section which is hard to read, however follows the conventions of a typical film cover, so it is excused. The title of the film appeals to horror fans because it looks very aggressive and as if it were carved by the axe the killer is holding, showing the violence the audience wants to see. The structure is quite appealing to my target audience as people aged 16-24 usually look for simplicity in products like this (as I found out through my primary audience research). Even though this isn’t the most simple, it still is simple enough for my audience to understand easily, with little effort, however still includes aspect of creative and complex imagery, for example the sewn mouth effect on the killer. The colour on this film cover isn’t very eye-catching, which most people appeal to on a film cover, however when people see it, males are most likely going to appeal to the colours more than females (which is good as my target audience is mainly male). They appeal to the dark red, and the black used as the negative connotations such as blood, evil and death appeal to them when looking at films. You could also say that the background appeals to some females due to the nature side of it (green), however it is darkened and desaturated a lot, therefore the green is barely noticeable. The white stands out against the background, making the text easy to read, which is appealing because it means you can read it at little effort, which is ideal for my 16-24 aged audience. The audience appeals to the imagery in this product because is shows a lot of creativity and imagination, which people of a younger generation (16-24) appreciate more than people of an older generation. Also, people of this age range, along with males, in my audience appeal to blood, gore and violence, therefore they see the sewn mouth and the blood involved with it and see what the film is likely to entail. They usually appeal to this due to their ‘immature’ nature, which also links with the use of the axe in the imagery, which again shows violence and murder (especially with the blood on the end of the axe).
  • 47. Audience Appeal – Film Poster 1 As I mentioned in the imagery section, the text appeals to my target audience because they are attracted to blood and gore, due to their ‘immature nature’. The text’s appearance is very eerie, as it blood on a wall, dripping down, showing the phrase “keep quiet, you’re safe”, showing the killer has created this with smeared blood on the wall and to get this blood he most likely had to kill someone. Aside from aesthetics of the text, it is appealing to my target audience technically as well. For example the text is large, bold, clear and easy to read/understand, this means no or little effort is needed from the viewer to read it, which is ideal for people of a younger generation, who tend to look for ‘easy’ routes, instead of challenging themselves, especially when they don’t need to view this. The structure is quite appealing to my target audience as people aged 16-24 usually look for simplicity in products like this (as I found out through my primary audience research). Even though this isn’t the most simple, it still is simple enough for my audience to understand easily, with little effort, however still includes aspect of creative and complex imagery, for example the axe and face of the character blending into the wall. The colour of this product appeals to horror fans, with the blandness and dullness of the grey/light brown, however this colour isn’t stand out or gender specific, therefore it doesn’t really appeal to either genders and its only a small percentage of my target audience that would appeal to this colour. The use of red on this poster makes up for it though, as males and females both appeal to this gender neutral colour, and there is a lot of it on the poster, making it easily noticeable. My target audience is people aged 16-24 and people of this age range, along with males, in my audience appeal to blood, gore and violence, therefore they see the dripping blood text and the gore involved with it and see what the film is likely to entail. They usually appeal to this due to their ‘immature’ nature, which also links with the use of the axe in the imagery, which again shows violence and murder (especially with the blood on the end of the axe).
  • 48. Audience Appeal – Film Poster 2 The text in this product is very simple and clear to read, therefore little effort is needed to understand it, which is ideal for my age range (16-24), and there is still some aesthetical qualities to it as well, with the dripping of the blood off the text, although this is minimal. This blood appeals to males and their ‘immature nature’ as they usually are entertained by the acts of violence, which this font implies, as this is where the blood comes from. The structure is quite appealing to my target audience as people aged 16-24 usually look for simplicity in products like this (as I found out through my primary audience research). Even though this isn’t the most simple, it still is simple enough for my audience to understand easily, with little effort, however still includes aspect of creative and complex imagery, for example the killer blending into the smoke and the axe dripping with blood. Similar to the previous product the colour in this poster doesn’t stand out a lot, with the different shades of grey used, however this still appeals to the horror genre and suits the theme nicely. On the other hand, the use of the red against the grey background makes it stand out more, and this colour is gender neutral, therefore both genders tend to like this colour. Red is also very horror related with the connotations of blood and danger, which usually males appeal to more, as they tend to gain entertainment from violence and gore. This is good because I have more males than females in my target audience. I think that my target audience will appeal to this imagery because it includes the bloody axe from the film cover, however this time the axe is dripping with blood, showing the blood is fresh, meaning he has just killed somebody, making the viewer want to see this killing and find out who he killed and why he killed them. The use of the smoke in the background and the killer blending in with it is also very effective because people of a younger generation tend to appreciate creative imagery more and also it makes the image look much more mysterious, as to where he is and what the smoke is from, which horror fans love the suspense and tension that this creates.
  • 49. Audience Appeal – Film Poster 3 The text in this product appeals to people who prefer simplicity, which is over half of my target audience, however this percentage also includes people who prefer to be able to read text easily and not to be challenged by it. However, my text does not suit these needs, as due to the colour and size it makes it difficult to read, meaning the viewer has to strain their eyes to view it, therefore they likely just won’t bother attempting to read it. This means that this could definitely be improved by making it easier to read. The structure is quite appealing to my target audience as people aged 16-24 usually look for simplicity in products like this (as I found out through my primary audience research). Even though this isn’t the most simple, it still is simple enough for my audience to understand easily, with little effort, however still includes aspect of creative and complex imagery, for example the character’s face fading into the shadowing background. The colour of this poster’s background is very appealing to the horror genre’s fans, and to males of a younger generation, in other words, the heavy use of the colour black is perfect for my target audience. The colour of the text, however, is not. This is because it doesn’t contrast well with the black background, if the background were lighter than this colour would also be very good for appealing to my target audience, however it is very difficult to see therefore the audience doesn’t feel the same connotations being implied through the colour and the meaning is lost. The imagery in this product is quite creative yet very simple, as there is only one image on the poster, however it fades smoothly into the shadowing background, therefore is simple yet effective, which appeals to my younger generation target audience very well, as they are ‘wowed’ by simple imagery. The use of the black eyes also show the emotion, along with the facial expression, and the tension of the film and the character, which horror fans definitely appeal to, as they like to be on edge and tense during the film and this poster portrays this feeling for the film, making them want to watch it.
  • 50. Audience Appeal – Film Merchandise 1 The text on this product is very minimal and is only included in the design, as the exact same image from the film cover. This makes the product less creative, which people don’t appeal to, however it links the merchandise to the product very well, showing exactly what the merchandise is promoting and fans of the horror film Axe Of Kindness would like to promote this film by sharing the title of the name on the hoodie they are wearing. The colour of this merchandise (along with the design) is also ideal for my target audience (aged 16-24). This is because this age range doesn’t usually like standing out from the crowd and the colours black and white are the most used colours in clothing in this generation, compared to bright colours, such as yellow or green, because these colours match/suit almost every colour, therefore you can wear it with anything. The connotations of these colours link with the film as well, with the black portraying death, evil and mystery and the white portraying the innocence and naivety of the victims in the film. This also means that general horror fans will appeal to these colours as well. This design appeals to my target audience a lot. First of all it is very small and simple, therefore it doesn’t stand out and people aged 16-24 (my target audience), usually don’t want to stand out from the crowd, meaning this simple design is ideal. Secondly the use of the axe and the dripping blood appeal to the males of my target audience, as they like this type of imagery. Horror fans in general may also appeal to this design because it implies violence and death, therefore it’s obvious that the product promotes a horror film.
  • 51. Audience Appeal – Film Merchandise 2 The colour of this merchandise is also ideal for my target audience (aged 16-24). This almost ‘makes ups’ for the standing-out of the design, as you can only see the design from the front but can see the colour from every angle. The use of the axe and the dripping blood appeal to the males of my target audience, as they like this type of imagery. Horror fans in general may also appeal to this design because it implies violence and death, therefore it’s obvious that the product promotes a horror film. However the size of the design may deter people from wearing/appealing to this product, because it stands out quite a bit, when you see it from the front. But then again, many people like to stand out, even though this percentage isn’t as large as those who don’t want to stand out, some people still do. The text on this product is very minimal and is only included in the design, as the exact same image from the film cover. This makes the product less creative, which people don’t appeal to, however it links the merchandise to the product very well, showing exactly what the merchandise is promoting and fans of the horror film Axe Of Kindness would like to promote this film by sharing the title of the name on the hoodie they are wearing and the text is very clear and easy to see on the large design, covering most of the hoodie.
  • 52. Audience Appeal – Production Logo The font of the large letters “HS” are quite effective in appealing to people of a younger generation as it is quite abstract, like a brush stroke, however it is still fairly simple, which can appeal to people of an older generation, therefore I can use this logo for all my work, no matter what type of product I produce, which is very useful. The colour used is very simple and was chosen for this exact reason. It appeals to people of all generations, as everybody can work with the colour black. This colour can also be viewed in many different ways, for example when it is on a horror product, the colour black can be seen as interpreting the connotations pf death, evil and mystery, which is effective in appealing to horror fans. The simplicity of this design is very effective in appealing to my audience because they can see and understand it clearly. The ‘closure’ technique used also appeals to younger minds because they like creativity and ‘puzzle-types’, however a lot pf people in the teenage generation also contradict this view, therefore this design could go either way. Although, it is still very useful for marking my work with my name and showing who created the products.
  • 53. Did My Products Meet My Intentions? • Overall, I believe that my product did meet my intentions, in terms of the design, imagery, colours, text and structure used (basically the technical and aesthetical qualities of the products I made). Although, I did intend on making some products that I never got round to making due to a lack of time and poor judgement of the time I had remaining, meaning I couldn’t make them. The products I intended to make on top of these products were extra merchandise pieces, for example bags, T-shirts, hats, mugs etc. and I also wanted to create a the murder weapon the killer is holding in the film cover. I wanted to create this product so it was original and memorable, and people would see this product and think that it was from this film. I took this inspiration from my survey responses and from the professional product Friday The 13th, as Jason (the killer in the film) has a machete, which is popularly known to be from this film. • Although this isn’t what I planned the products I did make met my intentions, with their technical and aesthetic qualities (as I have analysed in detail), which I am very pleased about. This pleases me because I shows I put a lot of work into my research and planning and actually following these pre-production sections, whereas in previous projects I didn’t do this as well, therefore I have worked on my improvements I have taken from previous projects which pleases me a lot.
