2. Basic Information:
At the start of my survey I asked my audience their age and gender, from this question,
I discovered that 6 of my participants were male, and 14 female, and that the age
range of my audience was from 12-47 over the varied genders.

3. Question One:
Would my target audience prefer a magazine that is issued once a month or once a week.
Out of my twenty participants the majority would prefer a magazine that comes out once a
month over once a week, winning by a ratio of 3:1.
Frequency
Monthly Weekly
4. Question Two:
In this question I asked my audience what gender of artist they would prefer to see on the cover of my magazine if they
were going to buy it. The results were split equally between male and female preference 5 to 5, whilst the remaining 10
participants had no preference to the gender on the front cover of my magazine.

5. Question Three:
This question consisted of asking the audience if they would rather pay more for a better quality magazine with more in
depth articles, or pay less for a magazine of slightly lower quality and simpler articles. The main preference seemed to
be that my audience would rather pay more for a higher quality magazine, and one participant said that a reasonable
price would be the preferred option over paying either more or less.

6. Question Four:
I asked next about the type of articles my audience would like to see in the magazine, and included a list for them to select
as many options as they like from. The options included; lifestyle, album reviews, where are they now?, tour dates,
interviews, concert reviews, expose, fashion/clothing/products, free downloads and voucher codes.
These are the selection results.

7. Question Five:
The next question I asked was what would my audience like to see in a feature article, this was an open question, meaning
there was a wide range of answers. 7 people decided an interview was best, 4 would have liked music reviews, 3 would have
liked facts or news, 3 others wanted to see an article on new and under the radar artists in their own feature article, 2
would have liked reviews of other things, 2 others would have liked a day or week in the life style article, 2 more would have
liked a fashion article, namely a “Steal Their Style” article, one person wants a ‘Where are they now?’ article, another
person wanted a public question and answer article and the final person simply wanted “funny stuff”.

9. Question Seven:
In this question I asked my audience what type of costume and makeup they would like to see on my models. This was
an open question again and so the answers were varied, I have tried my best to group the answers together into the
same styles.

For this question, my audience were in two minds about the layout of my front cover, with a reasonable amount of votes
for both a clearer and a busier front cover. However, clearer was still the overall winner.

This question is about the article preference of each gender and their preferences, after getting the answers back it was
obvious that there were not really any gender specific preferences.

12. Question Ten:
This question was about the sexualities that my audience would like to see represented in my magazine and if they would
find any offensive. There were three different answers given and everyone said that no sexuality would offend them, and
two people even would have preferred all to be included.

When Possible
This question was simply if my audience went to concerts and gigs, this was a question that I added to my survey to
see whether or not it would be a good idea to include live act photos in my magazine.
14. Question Twelve:
This question was to gauge if my audience prefer physical or online copies of music, this would allow me to find out the
best way to give away free music if I were to include some with my magazine.

16. Question Fourteen:
I think that “What do you like to see on magazine covers?” was too vague of a question,
as the answers ranged widely from photos to articles. The main answer was the fact
that my audience would like to see a clearer magazine cover with a couple of feature
articles advertised and the artist featured in the double page spread would be the best
option to have on the front cover.
17. Question Fifteen:
This question was about adverts in magazines, it was a two part question, one being if magazines were annoying or not,
and the other was what type of adverts did they prefer. The majority of my audience didn’t mind the adverts in
magazines, and there were a few suggestions of the types of adverts they preferred.

18. Question Sixteen:
This question was about any types of articles my audience would find offensive if they were included. There again was a

Does an Artist Make You Want to Buy a Magazine?
Yes
No
Sometimes
For this question, my audience was mostly in agreement with yes, which shows that an artists fan base will bring more sales
to the magazine if they are interested in the article written and attracted to buy the magazine by the cover image. There
were also some examples given, these included; One Direction, Rita Ora, Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran.
20. Question Eighteen:
For this question, everyone said that a free download or a CD would make them want
to buy a magazine more, to me this means that including one would make the sales of
my magazine higher than without one. The format of the music will probably be in the
form of a download code for a website as that was the more popular option of
download.

For most people, a voucher or discount code would not make them want to buy a magazine more, as most would not use
one if it were included anyway.
23. How this research has changed my initial ideas:
• From this research, most of my initial ideas for my magazine have been backed up and confirmed that this would be most
appealing to my target audience, for example, I stated that I would prefer darker clothing and makeup, whilst still keeping a
modern edge to my costume, and my audience suggested more up to date looks and darker options as the most popular choices.
• For my colour scheme I wanted to use black and white, with lighter coloured accents to add to the importance of certain features,
my audience again confirmed my ideas by making Black and White and Dark the most popular colour choices, and Red, Blue and
Gold the other most popular specific colours to include, so I will make these the colours for my accented areas.
• I did not ask any questions about the type of shot that my audience would prefer, however I plan to create another questionnaire
more specific to the cover of my magazine, and this will be where I ask about the pose and type of shot the audience would prefer.
• Again in the questionnaire for my cover, I will ask about the filter for the cover shot, however I still agree with my updated initial
ideas that a coloured image on the cover would be a better, more attractive option, and I perhaps may use a black and white
image for the centre of my double page spread article.
• In my survey, my audience confirmed an interview would perhaps be the best option for the content of my DPS, and I would like to
centre the content of my interview around the life outside of music, like stated in my ideas. Some questions could be about how
the artist got into music for example and the types of previous artist they aspire to be like, and who their music inspirations would
be.
• After my target audience research, I definitely am planning to include a free download of music, and I would prefer it to be a link
or code for the music to be downloaded from the internet rather than a physical copy.
• My target audience confirmed that they also have no real preference to the gender of the artist on my cover. I would prefer to
have a singular model on my cover rather than a band, and I think the model will be female, as I know more female friends who
would suit the style I am picturing for my cover, and would be more available for a photoshoot.
• This research has again confirmed that a clearer front cover would be the best option for my magazine as I said in my updated
ideas. Therefore this will be the style that I am aiming for with my magazine.
