Sentence 4: The topic was reported by Marissa

ACTIVE VOICE
PASSIVE VOICE
ACTIVE VOICE
PASSIVE VOICE
VOICE is the quality of a verb that shows whether
the subject is the doer or receiver of the action.
ACTIVE
VOICE
The boy kicked the ball.
PASSIVE
VOICE
The ball was kicked by the boy.
subject as doer verb object
subject as receiver verb by-phrase
The active voice is used to indicate that the
subject of the sentence is the doer of the
action.
The boy kicked the ball.
subject as doer verb object
A student wrote the winning essay.
Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone.
The chef prepared a delicious meal.
• When the subject of the sentences
does the action and the verb has a
direct object, we say that the verb is
in the active voice.
• Remember the pattern of active
voice which is:
S + V + DO.
• In the passive voice, the subject receives the action
expressed in the verb.
• The object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the
passive voice.
• You can recognize passive voice expressions because the
verb phrase will always include a form of be such as am, is,
was, were, and are.
• The presence of a be-verb, however, does not necessarily
mean that the sentence is in passive voice.
• Another way to recognize passive voice sentences is that
they may include a “by-phrase” after the verb; the agent
performing the action, if names, is the object of the
preposition in this phrase.
The ball was kicked by the boy.
subject as receiver verb by-phrase
The winning essay was written by a student.
The telephone was invented by Alexander
Graham Bell.
A delicious meal was prepared by the chef.
• In each sentence above, observe that the subject
is the receiver instead of being the doer of the
action.
• Note that the form of the verb when the subject
is the receiver, not the doer of the action is made
up of be-verbs + past participle of the verb.
• Thus, if the subject is acted upon, the verb is in
the passive voice.
• Remember the pattern of passive voice which is:
S + be-V + past participle + by-phrase.
Present Tense
Active: Subject + base form or -s/es form + Object
Example: The resource speaker discusses the effects of unemployment.
Passive: Object as the subject + am/is/are + past participle +
by-phrase
Example: The effects of unemployment are discussed by the
resource speaker.
Past Tense
Active: Subject + past form of the verb + object
Example: She decorated the walls.
Passive: Object as the subject + was/were + past participle +
by-phrase
Example: The walls were decorated by her.
Future Tense
Active: Subject + will + base form + object
Example: She will write a poem.
Passive: Object as the subject + will + be + past participle +
by-phrase
Example: A poem will be written by her.
Present Perfect Tense
Active: Subject + has/have + past participle + Object
Example: He has completed the work.
Passive: Object as the subject + has/have + been + past
participle + by-phrase
Example: The work has been completed by him.
Past Perfect Tense
Active: Subject + had + past participle + object
Example: They had won the game.
Passive: Object as the subject + had been + past participle +
by-phrase
Example: The game had been won by them.
Future Perfect Tense
Active: Subject + will + have + past participle + object
Example: The students will have taken the exam before the end of
the semester.
Passive: Object as the subject + will + have been + past participle +
by-phrase
Example: The exam will have been taken by the students before the
end of the semester.
Although the active construction is more
commonly used in English, there are
instances when the passive seems more
effective.
 The doer is not known.
Example:
The school was established in 1987.
When the speaker considers the
doer unimportant to the meaning,
he/she wishes to convey.
Example:
Paul was hurt.
When the emphasis is on the
receiver rather than the doer.
Example:
A trophy was awarded to the
winners.
When the speaker wishes to be
objective or impersonal.
Example:
It is said that the family is rich.

is the sentence and he/she will change the
sentence into active voice or passive voice
depending on the sentences that he/she picked.
