This document provides a summary of advertising standards codes (ASA Codes) for the creation of marketing communications. It lists 13 codes with brief descriptions of each. Code 1 is about compliance with laws and decency. Code 2 ensures marketing communications are clearly labeled as advertisements. Code 3 prohibits misleading advertisements. Code 4 prohibits harmful or offensive content. Code 5 prohibits promoting dangerous behaviors to children. Code 6 requires permission to use people's images. Code 13 regulates health and nutrition claims about food and supplements.
2. ASA Codes
Number Name Brief Description
1 Compliance Don’t lie, Don’t break the law, don’t be indecent

13 Food, food
supplements
and associated
health or nutritional
claims
Don’t promote poor dietary habits, you can’t tell
people your product has health benefits without
proof to back it up
4. Mind Map
• Strengths of using this method
By using this idea, I can easily come up with many ideas very quickly, it essentially allows
me to get lots of ideas down onto something I can memorise so when it comes down to my
final product I can easily put all of this information to use, another strength would be that
it’s easy to use, it’s not difficult to go to bubbl.us and make a mind map with a lot of
information on, this information we get from mind maps improves the final product greatly.
• Weaknesses of using this method
A weakness of this method is you don’t go into much detail on each topic, you instead try
to put things down into your mind map in small words, or short sentences, while this is nice
to keep things simple, in the end it could decrease the amount of information gathered by
this mind map as a whole, and this could badly effect the final product.
• Did you like using this method? Why?
I enjoyed using this method for a few reasons, firstly I find this method easy to use, with a mind map you don’t
need to worry too much about writing down a lot, you can gather a few ideas in your head and get them down
onto the screen on Bubbl.us, another reason why this is a nice method to use is because it’s fun and simplistic
but also yields good results, I find it quite fun trying to branch out a mind map and coming up with new ideas
and thoughts in my head, making a large tree of ideas is fun in my opinion.
6. Mood Board
• Strengths of using this method
A strength of using this method is that again like the mind map, you can get lots good ideas
and information, down while not taking too long doing it, it could also be a strength that
they’re all images, this makes it easier to actually understand the information which you’ve
gathered, you could also use these images as references when doing your final product, and
this could drastically improve it.
• Weaknesses of using this method
A weakness of using this method would be that you don’t get much information down onto
the screen, written information anyway, it’s just images which means if you are not good
with learning through pictures or getting information through pictures, this method will not
be useful to you, this is because some people find written information much more valuable
than visual information.
• Did you like using this method? Why?
I really enjoyed using this method as its again like the mind map easy
to use and gives pretty great results, when I have used this method in
the past it’s allowed me to get ideas from products which have already
been made, by doing this I can make my product look as professional
and as good as possible, this is really what I like trying to do when
doing my products.
7. Style Sheet
Coca

Coca Cola
Coca Cola
Coca Cola
Coca Cola
cocA coLA
COCA COLA
What I’ve noticed from
my research is that coca
cola always uses either
the colour red, black or
white, now that I know
this I will use these
colours in my final
product, which will
hopefully improve the
product drastically.
8. Style Sheet
• Strengths of using this method
A strength of this method would be that you can get many different pieces of information down onto one slide
in powerpoint, images and written work, this can help you improve your final product as you’ve not just
researched one type of information, but two and you need to research both types of information to be able to
create a suitable product.
• Weaknesses of using this method
A weakness of using this method would be that the information found and used is all a bit splashed onto the
slide with no real order, this could be bad when trying to keep organised, this shows a lack of organisation as a
whole in a person and this is not a good thing when you’re trying to create a popular product, to change this I
would recommend making your style sheet at neat as possible to keep all your work organised.
• Did you like using this method? Why?
I enjoyed using this method because it’s not that work intensive, I was able to gather colours, and different
fonts easily, I also gathered some pre existing posters and this wasn’t difficult to do but it will help my final
product a lot, I know this because I will be able to use the prexisting poster ideas, the colours used and the
fonts on my final product, with all of this coming together I will have a good final product.
10. Layout Plan
• Strengths of using this method
The strength of this method is that you can make a quick layout of your final product, this allows
you to quickly and efficiently get an idea of what you want your final product to look like, so
when you go onto doing the actual production you won’t have to spend a lot of time wondering
how you’re going to put it all together, as you’ve already made a layout.
• Weaknesses of using this method
A weakness of this method would be that you might not yet have a great idea of what you want
your final product to be like, so you may come up with a quick and rushed idea on the layout and
by the time your production comes around the layout you previously made could be completely
useless and not help you in anyway.
• Did you like using this method? Why?
I enjoyed using this method because I like getting hands on with the product, this allowed me to
flex my skills and come up with something I am proud of and something I would like to use as a
layout for my final product, and it’s not like I’d need to stick to using the layout, it’s just a
guideline and so that’s why I like it so much.
12. Brainstorm
• Strengths of using this method
• A quick way to come up with multiple ideas at once, it is also incredibly similar to the
mind map I have done above, so it’s again fun and easy to do.
• Helps with formulating a pitch, by coming up with many ideas very quickly you can get
thoughts ready for a pitch, this could be very useful.
• Weaknesses of using this method
Brainstorms are quick, you don’t usually take a long time on them, which means you
may not think of a lot of good ideas.
Because of this you may not have a very strong final piece which obviously is not what
you will be wanting if you’re looking for a high mark
• Did you like using this method? Why?
• I like using this method because I like doing things quickly and getting stuck into things without much planning, for me this is more fun
because it allows me to fail sometimes and I learn from mistakes, but I really just enjoy being able to get stuck into the meat of the
project quickly rather than spending a load of my time planning.
13. Pitch
Our idea isn’t very simple, what we were thinking was to have
sounds of a battle/war and a man in pain, suddenly another man
will offer him a coke, the man in pain will open the can and the
famous can opening sound will play, when he drinks it he will be
back in his office unscathed, then a voice will say ‘Coke, sure to
refresh you after a hard days work’, this would really emphasis
the power and rejuvenating powers of coca cola, this will make
the audience feel like they want to have a coca cola after the
advert, this is exactly what we want as it means we have been
able to sell out product effectively.
14. Informal Pitch
• Strengths of using this method
• A clear plan, you get all the ideas down and put them together to create a sound piece of
work, it’s not really a long term thing either as it’s ‘informal’ you could literally bung some
stuff together as a quick draft and ask someones opinion on it and you’d have an informal
pitch, this is something I like doing as it’s a quick way of working and is really my thing.
• Weaknesses of using this method
• This way of working sometimes isn’t so great and rushing things can sometimes lead to a bad outcome, this can be
quite common and can be annoying when something you thought might be great turns out really bad because
you rushed it and you really might kick yourself, because of this you have to be quite careful but if you don’t enjoy
doing an informal pitch you can always go for a formal pitch and take your time on it.
• Did you like using this method? Why?
• I enjoyed using this method because me as a person lies to do things fast and get the
planning over with so I can get stuck into the project and really start getting some real work
done, I think this is always a fun thing to do but it also helps me quite a lot because it’s my
way of working and usually makes me works better.
16. Group Idea Generation
• Strengths of using this method
• You get to use the power of a group of brains rather than just one, because of this you will get a much higher
quality piece of work, you will also come up with a lot more ideas which of course also leads you to a higher
quality of work and so higher marks on the whole project, this makes this type of planning very strong.
• Weaknesses of using this method
• There are always problems with people working in a group together, rowdiness is one of them and it is really a bad
thing for working, basically what I mean is that when ne person in the group starts making a lot of noise and
annoying others the whole group suffers and because of this the grade as a whole suffers, there is also another
problem with group idea generation, there’s the huge problem that there will be conflicting ideas and so people
could argue as to which idea is best and what idea should e brought forward to be used.
• Did you like using this method? Why?
• I enjoyed using this method because I jump at the chance to work with new people and really get to know them, I
believe this is a good activity to take part in as socialising is extremely important and it’s something I love to do.
17. Formal Pitch
• Strengths of using this method
• You get to have all your ideas down into a pitch in a professional way, this makes your ideas seem more solid and
easier to get across to people, by doing this you also get your ideas across to other people and so you can see if
your ideas are good enough to go through to the developing stages and so you can either get a huge morale boost
in your work or you could be crushed completely depending on what the person says.
• Weaknesses of using this method
• If the person you’re pitching it to doesn’t like your ideas they will probably tell you and this isn’t nice to hear a lot
of the time so it may discourage you completely from the task and of course this is an awful thing to happen but
you cant let it get in the way of you, otherwise you will most likely fail the whole thing.
• Did you like using this method? Why?
• I didn’t really enjoy doing the formal pitch because I like just getting right into the task and this is probably one of
the longest forms of planning and so I didn’t enjoy it that much, in fact I don’t really enjoy much planning because
of who I am as a person.
18. Initial Reaction
• My initial reaction to doing an advergame was being really
excited as I love gaming and I find the idea of animation really
enjoyable and exciting!, I guess this is the staple reaction to
most things if you enjoy them, I couldn’t wait to get started
and when I did start I loved it more than I thought, animating
is an extremely fun process and I’d do it again if I had the
time, everyone should have a go at trying to animate
something at one point as it’s really quite fun and you never
know it you might enjoy something but I guarantee if you try
animating you will most likely enjoy it, it’s like bringing
something to life and you feel like you have real power
making these things move!
19. Initial Reaction
• Strengths of using this method
• Yes because the initial reaction I had ended up being my final product and
it definitely worked well, as I’ve said many times before this is how I work,
quickly and efficiently, planning just doesn’t work well with me
unfortunately.
• Weaknesses of using this method
• If you feel like you found a really good idea when you’re having your initial
reaction it may not turn out as planned and you may be quite
disappointed in it and so you’d have to start again.
• Did you like using this method? Why?
• Yes I enjoyed using this method because it allowed me to come up with
good ideas quickly and this is what I like doing because I like getting into
the project quickly.
21. Sketches
• Strengths of using this method
• You get to have a good draw and come up with some nice ideas which will help you in
the future for when you make your final product, along with this it is easy and fun to do,
when a task is fun it will probably make you work harder because you enjoy it more.
• Weaknesses of using this method
• A weakness of this method would be that if you can’t really draw well you might not be
able to come up with any sketches that are of any worth, this might mean that you
can’t really get a good idea from doing this and so it would be a waste of time.
• Did you like using this method? Why?
• I really like drawing so this for me is a really fun way of planning and it really helps me
get some good ideas, it also allowed me to release my creative side for once which was
incredibly releaving.
22. Formal Proposal
• Strengths of using this method
• You get to discuss the target audience for the ad and you get to think
about if it’s offensive and tell people what the ad is about, this allows
people to decide if the ad is good enough to be aired (Obviously this isn’t
the case for me) but it’s something you have to do to fully complete the
advert.
• Weaknesses of using this method
• You have to explain a lot of things if you have put violence or offensive
material in your advert and it can be very difficult to explain it to others if
they don’t understand what it’s about.
• Did you like using this method? Why?
• Not really because it wasn’t the sort of thing I’d enjoy to do, but if I’m
honest it’s not about enjoying it, it’s just about getting it done, and if it’ll
help my work as a whole I’m going to do it.
