FORMULATING
COUNTERCLAIMS
WHAT IS COUNTERCLAIM?
are claims made to rebut a previous
claim. To rebut means to contradict
someone’s statement through a
formal argument. They provide a
contrasting perspective to the main
argument.
THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
Show competence and familiarity with
the writer’s topic.
Examine different perspectives and not
just passively accepting the writer’s
claim.
Consider the topic, and make sure you
are willing to engage different viewpoints
from your own
Clarify your personal position on the
topic.
EXAMPLE:
CLAIM:
As the class president, Jovan is asking for an extension for the due
of their performance task, saying that they are bombarded with
tons of requirement and that they need to focus in one specific
subject at a time.
COUNTERCLAIM:
Sir Aldine, given the circumstances that the deadline of the passing
of the grades is nearly approaching, he cannot give an extension for
the requirement anymore so he decided that if the class won't be
able to comply, they will automatically get a failing grade.
WHAT IS AN ARGUMENT?
a statement or group of
statements called premises
intended to determine the
degree of truth or acceptability
of another statement called a
conclusion.
1. CLAIM
is a statement that asserts
facts based on one’s
understanding about a
particular topic or issue.
2. COUNTERCLAIM
is just the opposite of claim. It is a
statement that contradicts one’s
claim and is usually proven and
supported by both reasons and
evidences.
3. REASON
is the part of an argument where
a statement offers an explanation
behind a party’s claim
4. EVIDENCE
is the statement that proves the
truth of a claim and generally leads
to the conclusion of an argument.
Identify whether the following statements
are CLAIM, COUNTERCLAIM, REASON or
EVIDENCE. Then pick out the word, clause,
or phrase that proves your answer.
In the movie “The Fault in our
Stars”, Hazel has a thyroid
cancer that kills about 2,050
people every year.
EVIDENCE
I can be whatever and whoever
I want to be.
CLAIM
I don’t think so. Charles
Darwin’s Theory of Evolution
explains that humans evolved
to from monkeys.
COUNTERCLAIM
I did not came early because
of the heavy traffic in our
barangay earlier.
REASON
I am not convinced that Sun is
the biggest Star in the Galaxy
because according to NASA,
Sirius is bigger.
COUNTERCLAIM
I do not want to go to the
library because I see ghosts in
there.
REASON
Even the stars will fall with your
beautiful smile.
CLAIM
Upon checking the test papers,
I figured that Missy got the
highest score among the class.
EVIDENCE
Liza Soberano hasn’t done
anything wrong.
CLAIM
Sir Aldine is the most
handsome creature in the
planet because of his lovely
eyes.
REASON
CLAIM:
Speaking in English should be a
pre-requisite to be a leader.
MAKE YOUR OWN COUNTERCLAIM
