Cambrian Explosion
Around 530 million years ago, the Cambrian explosion made a significantly fast appearance of main
groups of complex organism. This was confirmed by the fossil record. Along the support by an
apparent diversification of various living things, including phytoplankton, calcimicrobes and also
animals. 580 million years before this, most life forms were basic, made out of individual cells
occasionally sorted out into colonies. The Cambrian explosion can be said to happen in waves. The
initial, a co evolutionary transformative ascent in differing qualities as animals investigated specialties
on the Ediacaran ocean bottom, trailed by a second development in the early Cambrian as they
established in the waters column. The pace of advancement found in the Cambrian times of the
explosion is not paralleled amongst the marine creatures: it changed all metazoan clades where
Cambrian fossils were found. Later radiations, the fish in the Silurian and Devonian era, included less
taxa, for the most part with basically the same body plans. Despite ... Show more content on

Other essential factors include, steadiness of numbers and overpopulation, which led to battle for
survival amongst the species and only some will live sufficiently long enough to breed. Additionally,
variation amongst the offspring plays a role in survival as well where only the strongest will survive
through extreme conditions. Also, the arrangement of new species where members lacks favourable
capabilities and characteristics are most likely not to survive sufficiently long to breed. Inheritance of
a single variation will not create another species. However, the evolution of various varieties in a
specific course over the generations will lead to the evolution of other type

Stan Lee
Stanley Martin Lieber who is more commonly known as, Stan Lee, is an editor, publisher, producer,
actor, television host, former chairman of Marvel Comics, and most importantly an extravagant comic
book writer. Lee, born on December 28th 1922, began his career at the age of seventeen with Timely
Comics, which is now known as Marvel Comics. During his time with Timely Comics, developed
numerous comics such as The Fantastic Four, Captain America, The Amazing Spider Man, Iron Man
and countless of other stories that paved the way to his success as a cartoonist. Lee remains one of the
best comic book writers of all time. Going beyond the fantasy world of superheroes, Lee s

The atmosphere of World War II helped enhance Lee s writing because it led to the debut of Captain
America Issue #3 in 1941 with the help of Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. Lee used elements of the war
and incorporated it into his work. The controversy and calamity of the war made Lee s Captain
America a prominent figure during the war period because he epitomized anti Nazism in an
unexpressed interventionist tone (Wright 474). Lee constructed a tone towards Captain America,
which pledged to wage war against the enemies who were a threat to justice not only home in America
but also out of the country. With this tone, Lee s work had the most attention in the World War II
years. The influence of the war in Lee s work, however, led to some criticism. The ideology that Lee s
Captain America held wasn t viewed properly by political groups of other countries at the time, but
Lee found reverence from young readers who idolized patriotism. At the time, Marvel Comics was
called Timely Comics, and Timely Comics became the first comic book company to publish anti Nazi
stories. After World War II transitioned to the Cold War, America and the Soviet Union had high
tensions between one another, and the feeling of uncertainty grew amongst the two nations. Lee used
the high tension and uncertainty America faced with the Soviet Union, and incorporated them into his
writing. Lee s style of writing

IBM DB2 vs Oracle Essay
For this week s paper I have chosen to do a comparison between IBM s DB2 database management
system (DBMS) product and Oracle. Realistically, making such a comparison is akin to discussing
religion with friends. Each person will have their own biases based on their own experiences. Looking
for an unbiased opinion is much like looking for the Holy Grail, every bit as speculative and
subjective with the results jaundiced by the outlook of the reporter (Lim, 2002).
A decision between DB2 and Oracle should be based on what resources are available for use at the
site. Is there specific hardware or software already onsite that can or will be used in the installation, if
so this will have a major impact on the decision making process. Does the ... Show more content on

Oracle 9i comes in three versions enterprise, standard, and personal. Oracle also requires the following
patch levels on Windows operating systems (OS) for installation; Windows NT, service pack (sp) 5;
Windows 2000, sp 1; Windows XP, none needed. Oracle 9i is also available for HP AIX, Compaq

The DB2 Universal Database v8.1 comes in six flavors, DB2 Enterprise Server Edition, DB2
Workgroup Server Edition, DB2 Workgroup Server Unlimited Edition, DB2 Personal Edition, DB2
Universal Developers Edition, and DB2 Personal Developers Edition. The following patch levels are
required based on the Windows OS it is installed on. Windows NT, sp 6a; Windows 2000, sp 2 is
required for terminal services; Windows XP, none. As with Oracle, DB2 is also available for the
following UNIX based OS s, AIX, Linux, Sun Solaris, and adds support for HP UX (Chigrik, 2003).
Performing a flat out performance comparison between these two RDBMS is difficult mostly because
both can be used to build a stable and efficient system. Most of the difference in performance can
usually be traced back to the developer and the administrators for the respective systems. But, that
said, a direct comparison is possible once a set of typical transactions have been defined, that can then
be run under the different DBMS on different hardware and software platforms (Chigrik, 2003).
In fact, this is what has been done by the

Santa Barbara Drought Essay
California has had along history of dealing with its most vital resource water. It is not uncommon for a
state/country to experience a drought that is the fluidity of the earth. Unfortunately it is extremely
difficult to say when a drought will break for California it is vital that the state make breakthroughs in
science and technology that can help us sustain a proper water supply that gives water to the masses.
Exploring a section of California specifically in Santa Barbara, I will be looking at the history of water
and finding innovative solutions for more sustainable practices within the county itself. Looking at
past practices of water usage and the social, political, and current ideas of how drought has affected
this area and the solutions for the enduring future. Santa Barbara lies on the south facing area of
coastline. The city is between the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific Ocean with its Meditteran
climate and pristine beaches Santa barabara is an ideal place to live and visit. Santa Barbara s current

Texting Behind The Wheel Summary
In Texting at the Light and Other Forms of Device Distraction behind the Wheel, James L. Bernstein
and Joseph Bernstein discuss the fact that devices are one of the biggest distractions for those who
drive behind the wheel of a vehicle. The distraction will get worse as technology advances. Whether
parked or in motion, a driver that is distracted is dangerous. They are making this claim because they
gathered information through watching to streets during the busier hours of the day. Bernstein and
Bernstein recorded drivers on Lancaster Avenue and Church Road in Ardmore, Pennsylvania between
hours of four pm and six pm, over a six week period in summer of 2014. When drivers stop at a red

Finding Truth In Walt Whitman s Song Of Myself
The Romantic Period was a time very different from that of the previous movement, the
Enlightenment. It was a time for creativity and it was a time of unity in nature and within themselves.
During the Enlightenment, science and reason prevailed. Everything had set rules on how it should be
and how people should act in their private and public lives. Truth was static and never changing until
the Romantic Movement. Truth changed and was based on an individual s experience. Whereas during
the Romantic period. Transcendentalists were people found during this time who, according to A
Handbook to Literature, believed in finding truth within oneself where individuals could hear the
voice of God. They believed each person should find his or her own path to walk with God instead of
relying on an institution. This differed from the ideals of the Enlightenment in that during the
Enlightenment, some believed that science was all the God one needed. Science was the place truth
and knowledge was found, and there was no place in science for God. Dionysus, the god of wine,
fertility, and music is found throughout the works of Romantic authors and is seen as an opposition to
reason from the Enlightenment.

The Executive Officer, Ron Johnson
INTRODUCTION Former J.C. Penney Chief Executive Officer, Ron Johnson, spent less than 18
months in the company s top job. In 2012, at the time of his departure, Johnson had earned more than
$53.3 million in salary and benefits for his short stint at the company (Smith and Kantz, 2013). In the
same year, Abercrombie Fitch CEO, Michael Jeffries, earned $48.1 million while David Simon, CEO
of the Simon Property Group, banked $137.2 million (Smith and Kantz, 2013). Salaries such as these
have become increasingly common for CEOs of large American companies. On top of these generous
executive salaries, CEOs also receive very lucrative severance packages should they decide to resign

Social and political movements, such as Occupy Wall Street, have served to galvanize the debate over
CEO pay in the United States. While no one would argue that today s executives earn more than ever
before, a question arises over whether or not limits should be placed on the amount of compensation
they should earn. Those who would oppose the motion of placing limits on the amount that executives
should earn argue that CEOs pay is commensurate with their performance and the high risk nature of
their job. Similarly, those in favour of the motion would argue that such high salaries only serve to
encourage CEOs to engage in risky behaviour while imposing significant social and economic costs
on everybody else. This essay will argue that, given the significant economic and social costs of
skyrocketing executive pay, that it is imperative that government place limits on the salaries of CEOS
of publicly traded companies. In doing so, this essay will trace the rise of executive pay in the
American economy, critically examine the issue of whether or not CEOs earn their paycheques and
explore the high social and economic costs imposed on others when the wage between is so high. The
essay will conclude by examining different options available to government in their attempt to rein in
astronomical executive pay. A SHORT HISTORY OF

Panda Bears vs Environment The population of giant pandas is decreasing so rapidly that it has
reached the point that they are considered an endangered species. These black and white bears reside
mainly in China where seventeen percent of the total population of pandas reside. They are habituated
in bamboo forests, which are not only the panda s home, but also their main source of food. A panda s
diet consists of ninety percent bamboo and ten percent of mushrooms, insects, fish, plants and other
small rodents. These bamboo forests are being taken from them, because the human population is
constantly expanding and using their bamboo forests as land for growing crops or to build roads.
Combined with the natural dying on bamboo and logging, these defenseless panda bears are forced to
seek new areas and see whether or not there is a sufficient amount of bamboo for them to consume,
although many of them fail to do so and end up dying of starvation instead. As of today, there are only
twenty nine diminished and fragmented areas that have the appropriate habitat to support the
remaining panda bears. China s pandas have been threatened with extinction, suffered from low birth
rates, and have been ridiculed by human s interference with their habitat; now they are faced with
another obstacle, starvation. The climate change over the years has brought the extinction rate of the
pandas to rise at an

Good For Great, By Jim Collins
Good to Great, by Jim Collins, is based on seven principles that propel organizations into the next
level of service: Level 5 Executive Leadership; First Who, Then What; Confront the Brutal Facts; The
Hedgehog Concept; A Culture of Discipline; Technology Accelerators; The Flywheel and the Doom
Loop (Collins, 2001). By recognizing these opportunities for growth, organizations can turn from
good to great with the proper leadership. Leadership is built on a hierarchy of stages, and a leader
gradually grows through the levels or may even land anywhere among the levels. Level 1 is a leader
who is able to make decisions for the organization based on their skill levels and background
knowledge. Leaders performing at Level 2 effectively work with others in a small setting by
contributing their own capabilities. At Level 3, the leader is a competent manager who utilizes
resources and personnel toward predetermined objectives. The Effective Leader at Level 4 works
towards the vision by setting high standards for the organization. Level 5 Leadership, which
transforms an organization from good to great, refers to leaders who not only accept humility, but also
professional will. The great leader strives to make the organizational successful, not just themselves.
He or she does whatever needs to be done to make the company great (2001, p. 30). This level of
leadership is exhibited in the Gillette case. The CEO, Coleman Mockler, and his leadership team
strived to make the

Albert Bandura Contributions To Human Behavior
Albert Bandura made significant contributions when in reference to studying behavior in humans.
Some of his contributions include social cognitive theory, vicarious enforcement, extensive research
on human behavior, with a significant finding in relation to children, self efficacy, and the famous
BoBo doll experiment. Bandura was Canadian born and his parents placed high expectations when it
came to his education, Banduras first job was in the construction field, where he spent his days filling
potholes, eventually bandura enrolled at The University of British Columbia where he carpooled with
premed students and engineers, so he had to get to class pretty early. Bandura signed up for an
introductory psychology course because it fit with his morning schedule while waiting for his English
class to begin. Bandura eventually earned his graduate degree from The University of Iowa in 1952,
which eventually led to him teaching at the University of Stanford. That was the start of his career
pathway in becoming a social psychologist and contributing immensely to the field.
Bandura studied social cognitive theory, however; his research was more focused on observation with
importance surrounding reinforcement and reward. Bandura believed that the reactions were activated
by the human and that the human would react that way expecting to receive the same reinforcement,
meaning the human would react to the stimuli a certain way while expecting the reinforcement or
punishment. Also,

doctrines of intention and consideration. Explain the rules of law The doctrine of intention is an
undertaking by both sides of an agreement to be legally bound either by an informal agreement such
as verbal intention to purchase or act, or a written document stating intention to purchase or act, which
could be in the form of a letter or a written statement as compared to a formal agreement where a deed

Therefore the object of equal exchange is not necessary. In bilateral contracts when two parties

exchange promises as the promise to each other is deemed sufficient consideration. Apply the law to
the facts The points of discussion are to consider whether the elements of intention and consideration
have been met to enforce a contract. The intention of both Jamie and Gina to act is made clear when
Gina calls for tenders to build accommodation facilities at her mine site and Jamie submits a tender,
this in itself is not sufficient enough to form a contract as no promises of exchange have been agreed
to or accepted. At this point Jamie has made an offer to Gina indicating his intention in exchange for a
consideration of money and Gina has indicated her intention, in exchange for goods and services. Gina
decides to accept Jamie s tender and in doing so sends a formal document in the form of a letter to
Jamie, stating the terms and conditions of her acceptance. It is at this point that Gina has accepted
Jamie s tender and the terms of intention and consideration to form a contract have been met by Gina
and now relies on Jamie being able to meet the terms of the contract and giving a formal reply to Gina
to complete the contract. Jamie is going to accept Gina s terms and conditions and does so by

Globalization Is A New Of Level Of Interdependence
Globalization has produced a new of level of interdependence among us. The economy and
multinational supply chains do not abide by political boundaries. A computer ordered in Brazil is
designed in California and assembled in several other countries. Economic integration was the first
strong evidence of a new era Eduardo Paes. It can be seen now that globalization is something that
cannot be stopped. This process of international integration has come as a result of an interchange of
world views, ideas, product, and other aspects of different cultures. The rapid development of
transportation and telecommunication and furthermore the internet, has boosted globalization greatly
and as a result a greater interdependence of economic and cultural activities. Interdependence is one
the main factors of the economic welfare of the countries. Both regional and international
organizations preach this idea among their member states and this is one of their main objectives.
Nevertheless regional and international organizations have different geographical areas of operations
and different laws which at some cases might result into conflict with each other. Both the European
Union and NATO, in which I ll focus my essay on, show proof that there might be cases where the UN
s and international law s influence is nullified. I believe that regional organizations should be in a
continuous cooperation with the international organizations, but it should be regional organizations as

One example of why true love isn t real is because of our favorite childhood fairy tales, when the
princess and the prince live happily ever after. I agree with Dr. Scott because I realized true love isn t
real after I saw my grandmother break up with my grandfather.

Feminism In Shirley Jackson s We Have Always Lived In The...
The author G.D Anderson once said that Feminism isn t about making women strong. Women are
already strong. It s about changing the way the world perceives that strength. Throughout all of
documented human history, patriarchal values and beliefs have been a dominant factor in society,
literature, and culture. Forever seen as inferior, the strength that women truly have has had to hide
behind the thought that a man is necessary for anything to succeed. Shirley Jackson is the author of the
gothic novel We Have Always Lived in The Castle; a story about a young girl and her sister, who are
both absolutely despised and ostracized from the people who live in the village around them. The two
Blackwood sisters could not be more different in both personality and values, but in the novel We
Have Always Lived in the Castle, Jackson uses her platform to express how even the most contrasting
natures of femininity are able to come together to be self sufficient despite opposition and aggression
from male figures.
Mary Katherine represents is a wild and youthful girl that Jonathan Lethem describes as an expulsive
iconoclast (Lethem ix). She clearly has the simple mind and thoughts of a child, but that youth is
darkly complemented with the demented inner thoughts of a cold blooded killer. Several times
throughout the novel, she envisions the village burning and the people around her dying; Helen Clarke
is one of those people. Helen is an old friend of the Blackwood family, and one of

to success for many people and he wants to eliminate the idea that money destroys all evil. The tempo

Pathology of Tay Sachs Disease Essays
TAY SACHS DISEASE The disease is named after Warren Tay (1843 1927), a British
ophthalmologist and Bernard Sachs a New York neurologist. Warren Tay discovered a patient with a
cherry red spot on the retina of the eye which has become a clear signal of Tay sachs disease. Later on
Bernars Sachs described the cellular changes in Tay Sachs disease. Tay Sachs disease is a rare
autosomal recessive genetic disorder that gradually destroys nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.
Mutation in the HEXA gene on chromosome 15 causes Tay Sachs disease. The HEXA gene gives
instruction to make a part of an enzyme called β hexosaminidase A, this enzymes plays a critical role

Tay Sachs disease is also known as β hexosaminidase A deficiency or GM2 ganglioside. Mutation of
the HEXA gene causes the α and β subunits to malfunction. In other words if the α subunit which is
responsible for the degradation of GM2 ganglioside into GM3 ganglioside is not produced then the
hydrolyzing complex cannot form with GM2 activator protein. Eventually the damaged caused by the
accumulation of toxic levels of GM2 gangliosides leads to the destruction of neurons, which causes
the signs and symptoms of Tay Sachs disease and at last causing death of the patient. The progressive
neurodegeneration depends upon the speed and degree of GM2 ganglioside accumulation, which
directly relies on the level of β hoxosaminidase A present in the body. Almost 95 130 mutations have
been reported so far in the HEXA gene to cause Tay Sachs disease. The mutation varies from base
substitution, deletion, insersion to complex gene rearrrangement. But the most common mutation that

mutation is a splice junction mutation found at intron 12. Most of these mutations are private
mutations and have been present in a single or few families. Only few mutations have

How Did The New Deal Strengthen Economic Reform
There were many programs created during the Great Depression in hope for reform and recovery of
the economy. Some succeeded and helped the economy in small ways while others received the total
opposite reaction from Americans than what was hoped for. Many of these reforms and programs were
started by Franklin D. Roosevelt in the New Deal. The New Deal had three main goals: relief for the
jobless, economic recovery, and reforms to prevent future depressions. Like all programs started by
the government, it had many supporters as well as many people who didn t agree with how far it went
with regulating businesses and restricting individual freedom. The New Deal failed to end the Great
Depression, which was its ultimate goal. Overall, it was very successful due to the many problems it
eased in the economy. It employed millions, ended the banking crisis, reformed the stock market that
had collapsed, saved poor families, improved working conditions, created lasting works of art, and,
most importantly, restored Americans faith in the government. Some of the successful programs

After a time, the existence of subnormal profits would cause firms to leave the industry. Supply would
fall and prices rise. Hence long run equilibrium is one of normal profits only.
Perfect Competition Long Run
[pic]
Advantages of perfect competition
Because firms produce where MC=MR=Price, allocative efficiency is achieved.
Productive efficiency is also achieved because the firm produces at the lowest point of the AC curve.
Prices are lower because of increased competition.
Because of perfect knowledge firms must keep up to date and innovate or they will be forced to leave
the industry.
In the long run all firms will earn normal profits.
Cartels and other restrictive agreements cannot emerge to exploit consumers.
Perfect competition can be used as a model in economic analysis.
Disadvantages of perfect competition
Firms have little time to benefit from inventions because they quickly enter the public domain.
Since firms make only normal profits they might not have the funds to undertake expensive research

Firms might not benefit from economies of large scale production.

Gastric Emptying Studies
What is a gastric emptying study? The definition of a gastric emptying study is a procedure that is
done by nuclear medicine physicians using radioactive chemicals that measures the speed with which
food empties from the stomach and enters the small intestine . What does it have to do with nuclear
medicine and radioactive elements? That s a good question. It has to do with radioactive elements
because the meal, liquid, or both are mixed with a little bit of radioactive material, than gamma rays
are placed over the subjects stomach to track the amount of radioactivity that decreases in the
stomach. Gastric emptying studies use radioactive elements by using radioactive material. What is a

Les Nuits D Ete By Hector Berlioz
Amy Shuford 5 April 2011 Music History II Research Paper Les Nuits d Ete Dr. Christina Reitz An
Analysis of Hector Berlioz s Les Nuits d Ete Born in 1803, in the village of La Côte Saint André,
France, Hector Berlioz produced some of the most invigorating and exciting music of the Romantic
period (Holoman, 1, 6). Romanticism primarily focused on subjectivism, therefore people were
concentrating more on their emotions and spirituality and less on logical explanations for the problems
of humanity. Those of the Romantic period valued nature and depended upon the creativity of artists
in order to gain a deeper and different outlook on the world, one that was not strictly rational. Of all
the Romantic art forms, music, especially ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The tonal tension portrays the anger and confusion that the character is experiencing. During the
beginning of the movement, the vocal line is given much freedom for expression because the
accompaniment is mainly comprised of block chords entering on each beat. As the emotions of the
character intensify, the energy of accompaniment is also enhanced by repeating chords by use of
compound eighth notes. The emotion of the vocalist and orchestra continues to increase because the
vocalist makes their way to their high/head register to sustain notes to portray their anguish while the
orchestra is playing arpeggiated chords set rhythmically to thirty second notes. The movement ends
with the vocalist sustaining and the orchestra arpeggiating the dominant (V) chord to leave the listener
with a sense of unsettlement and discomfort (Berlioz, Les Nuits d Ete). L Absence (Absence) is the
fourth movement and is very contrasting to Sur les Lagunes by means of emotion and tonality. The
character singing is in a stage of grief when one may deny the occurrence of the death. The singer
repeatedly pleads Reviens, reviens ma bien aimee, which literally translates to Return, return my
beloved. Though the text is saddening, Berlioz set the song in the key of F# major which provides a
bright and elevating sound. The accompaniment is minimal in this movement because it

Styles Influence Of Communication In Military Organizations
Obviously, the structure, systems and leadership styles influence communication and its
manifestations in any organization (military, industrial, commercial). Nowadays, in the light of the
modern technological and organizational revolution, the military organization is increasingly similar
to civilian institutions; nonetheless, it differs in a radical way its members must be always ready to
pay the supreme sacrifice: their life. Due to this life binding commitment, the military must act like a
rigidly stratified organization, in which each level is linked to its hierarchical superior or subordinate
by immediate and loyal allegiance.
The organizational structure, as mentioned before, is strictly stratified. It manifests formally and
informally through diverse attitudes, behaviors, conducts, reactions, between otherwise equal
members of the society, classified and empowered by the institution according to rank and position.
The hierarchy is rigid and must be obeyed under all circumstances, by all members of the
organization, regardless of their race, color, status, age, gender etc. When the hierarchical flow does
not move smoothly across the organization, communication is obstructed. This is ... Show more

Taking into consideration that the military organization is mainly characterized by group work,
cooperation and coordination among isolated elements, it is critical that the level of communication
between the members of the organization be optimal, a characteristic which falls under the
responsibility of the leader, constantly concerned with facilitating clear and efficient transfer of
information. Consequently, the inherent conditions of communication (transparency, freedom of
expression, respect for others opinions, positive feedback) are conscientiously respected by all the
members of the organization and come to define modern military

Symptoms Of A Foodborne Illness
A foodborne illness is an infection or poisoning caused by bacteria, viruses, parasites, or chemicals
whose mode of transmission is by food. A foodborne outbreak is an illness event that typically
includes two or more people infected from the same food.1 Causative agent: Norovirus. Reported to
CDC were three norovirus outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis (AGE) that occurred on college campuses
in California, Michigan, and Wisconsin during fall 2008. College campuses are at particularly high
risk for norovirus outbreaks because of the large volume of students living in small, crowded
dormitories.2
Pathophysiology of Noroviruses: Noroviruses are a group of nonenveloped, single stranded, RNA
viruses categorized into the genus Norovirus of the family Caliciviridae. 3 Noroviruses can be divided
into at least five genogroups, GI GV; since 2001, GII.4 viruses have been linked with the bulk of viral
gastroenteritis outbreaks worldwide. 3 The virus replicates in the small intestine. Even when
symptoms might be severe, they most likely cease without treatment after 1 3 days in normally healthy
persons after a 12 48 hour incubation period.3 The virion RNA is contagious and serves as both
genome and viral messenger RNA. The enzyme cysteine proteinase catalyzes the cleavage of ORF1
polyprotein which yields the mature nonstructural proteins. 4 Norovirus is

Controlling Mouse 1.1 Moving Mouse Cursor We utilized the forefinger as a cursor controller to

principal strategy is mapping cursor control. It implies that the pointer on a camera screen can position

The Bell Curve Dilemma And Performance Appraisal
The Bell curve conundrum
It is a well established fact that employed human capital provides the competitive edge to the firms
operating in the same competitive space. Organizations that have motivated and talented individuals
are likely to forge ahead of the pack, even if they have similar products or services. That is why it is
important that we manage the performance of the employees well. We discuss the goals to be achieved
during the year; provide feedback to employees on their progress and modify the direction as the year
progresses and organizational direction shifts. At the end of the performance year, start pulling
together information and evidence of how well the employees have achieved the goals. Then apply a
rating which will govern their payouts, promotions and compensation and create development plans
for the next year. We cannot fathom anything to go wrong in this textbook laid process. It has been a
best practice after all! But somehow performance appraisal is the most hated organizational practice
by the employees. No one is ever happy with the results of their performance appraisals. Many solid,
successful, and happy employees find their ratings discouraging. At the same time we find the
managers and HR to be fidgeting uncomfortably even after doing everything they could to ensure that
the performers are well fitted in the bell curve. There has to be a better way. Have the companies like

Analysis Of Black Music By Amiri Baraka
Jazz was born in New Orleans and has been with us for more than half a century (Helm 1). Jazz has
grown popular in the eyes of critics. This makes it easy for many people to have access to it and have
their own views tainted by the opinion of others. Amiri Baraka, formerly known as LeRoi Jones, wrote
about the negative sides to having white critics write on Jazz. This is important because in his writing
Jones discussed music critics not understanding the true meaning of the song. Amiri Baraka s theory
of music critics is correct because it sheds light on how music critics have had a hand in changing
Jazz. In his writing Black Music, Amiri Baraka feels as the Jazz critics are missing the true meaning of
the lyrics and are only viewing one side of the piece and not the deeper meaning. In his writing, Jazz,
the Critics, and American Art Music in the 1920s, Mary Herron Dupree states agree with Baraka when
she states, The discussion of jazz and its relationship to art music began slowly in periodicals in 1921
and by 1924 was intense (288). In other words, Jazz has seen an increase in popularity as the years
have gone by. While the popularity began to increase Jazz culture also began to see new faces. Amiri
Baraka disagrees with the cultural expanding of Jazz music because he feels as though ...the sub
cultural attitudes that produced the music as a profound expression of human feelings, could be
learned and need not be passed on as a secret blood rite (Baraka 13). In other

Effects Of Alcohol On The Body s Organs And Brain Activity
Alcohol is a recreational drug which contains ethanol (Drugfreeworld.org, 2016), a depressant that
prolongs the messages from the brain to the body affecting the way one thinks, feels and behaves
(Alcoholthinkagain.com.au, 2014). Excessive alcohol consumption can have many negative effects on
the body s organs and brain activity. Major health problems such as cardiovascular disease, cirrhosis,
depression, gout and pancreatitis can occur as a result of consuming large quantities of alcohol and
have the potential to be fatal (Freeman, 2016). Binge Drinking is the act of consuming an excessive
amount of alcoholic beverages within a short period of time with intentions to become heavily
intoxicated (Dictionary.com,2014). Males in there 40 s and late 20 s are most likely to exceed the
recommended level of alcohol consumption and young women aged 18 24 are foreseen to excessively
drink alcoholic beverages (Nhmrc.gov.au, 2015). Adolescents aged 13 17 also engage in excessive
drinking although evoked due to observing others such as guardians, siblings and peers as well as the
existence of peer pressure to consume alcohol and appear socially acceptable. Binge Drinking will
have short term effects on the health of an individual leading to memory loss, vomiting and headaches
and long term effects such as anxiety, a variety of cancers and infertility (Knowyourlimits.info, 2013).
In Australia 15 individuals die from these alcohol related diseases and illnesses each day (Santow,
2014).

Coral Reef Research Paper
Kelp forests and coral reefs both belong in delicate environments, which when disturbed can have
catastrophic consequences for both of them. Certain processes can cause the eradication of both kelp
forests and coral reefs, as will be discussed in the following paragraphs, including sewage runoff,
changes in water chemistry, and land derived material from soil erosion.
Coral reefs around the world are in constant decline, and this is a major problem. This is happening
due to the direct and indirect effects of overfishing, and pollution that has derived from land. Both
these factors have decimated the cover of coral reef species for over two centuries. Often involved in
the degradation of coral reefs is a shift from the usual extensive covers of the coral, to extensive
covers of microalgae. Examples from around the world have shown that corals can persist and survive
through the long term, chronic stressors, such as overfishing and eutrophication, however cannot seem
to survive and recover from short term, acute disturbances, such as storm damage or freshwater run

This may explain the frequent dominance that micro algae have over coral. While neither enhanced
nutrients nor sedimentation are good for corals, their combined effect is far worse. Coral reefs that
experience loss of herbivores or flood plumes are subjected to very rapid micro algae growth in the
summer. If there has been a substantial reduction in herbivores, and no way to inhibit the growth of
algae, the increase in cover would still occur in certain places (i.e. the Great Barrier Reef), with or
without the change in nutrient availability. This indicates that increased nutrients in the waters are not

Some Theorists Believe Cinema Must Be Realistic And May
Some theorists believe cinema must be realistic and may only be seen as art if it remains in its original
form a static image on film stock. Others, however, argue that cinema is an important and relevant art
medium no matter its form. Digital cinema, while making use of new and different technologies such
as animation, is the next step in the evolution of film. Contrary to what certain theorists believe, it is
the most efficient and most artistically inclined way to create films as it offers a world of possibilities.
This is elaborated on in Digital Cinema and the History of a Moving Image, an excerpt from What Is
Cinema? the sixth chapter of The Language of New Cinema, a book penned by Lev Manovich.
Indeed, the author describes how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This mobility was acquired thanks to pre cinematic creations such as the Zootrope. What followed
was the debut of cinema as a moving image on film stock. This prompted documentary style short
films, such as L Arrivée d un train en gare à la Ciotat by Auguste and Louis Lumière, as well as, later
on, fictional feature films, like Charlie Chaplin s Modern Times. However, by mid 2011, 50 per cent
of the more than 39,500 North American screens had become digital. [And, in] the United States, the
major distributors have announced that they will cease to distribute films on 35mm film by the end of
2013. Thus, certain directors such as James Cameron and George Lucas are advocates for fully
digitally shot films. As a matter of fact, in 1984, George Lucas developed EditDroid and SoundDroid,
computerized, electronic non linear editing systems for image and sound. Furthermore, cinema has
evolved in terms of animation as well. In fact, the types of animation that are currently in use are so
entirely different than the kinds filmmakers had to use in the past. For example, while Meliès was
required to hand paint each and every single one of his film s frames for Le Voyage dans la Lune,
James Cameron s Avatar was able to make use of digital technologies in order to make the film 3D as
well as to turn human actors into the aliens featured in the film. Nevertheless, this new technological

  • 2. Cambrian Explosion Around 530 million years ago, the Cambrian explosion made a significantly fast appearance of main groups of complex organism. This was confirmed by the fossil record. Along the support by an apparent diversification of various living things, including phytoplankton, calcimicrobes and also animals. 580 million years before this, most life forms were basic, made out of individual cells occasionally sorted out into colonies. The Cambrian explosion can be said to happen in waves. The initial, a co evolutionary transformative ascent in differing qualities as animals investigated specialties on the Ediacaran ocean bottom, trailed by a second development in the early Cambrian as they established in the waters column. The pace of advancement found in the Cambrian times of the explosion is not paralleled amongst the marine creatures: it changed all metazoan clades where Cambrian fossils were found. Later radiations, the fish in the Silurian and Devonian era, included less taxa, for the most part with basically the same body plans. Despite ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Additionally, variation amongst the offspring plays a role in survival as well where only the strongest will survive through extreme conditions. Also, the arrangement of new species where members lacks favourable capabilities and characteristics are most likely not to survive sufficiently long to breed. • 3. Stan Lee Stanley Martin Lieber who is more commonly known as, Stan Lee, is an editor, publisher, producer, actor, television host, former chairman of Marvel Comics, and most importantly an extravagant comic book writer. Lee, born on December 28th 1922, began his career at the age of seventeen with Timely Comics, which is now known as Marvel Comics. During his time with Timely Comics, developed numerous comics such as The Fantastic Four, Captain America, The Amazing Spider Man, Iron Man and countless of other stories that paved the way to his success as a cartoonist. Lee remains one of the best comic book writers of all time. Going beyond the fantasy world of superheroes, Lee s incorporation of real life social issues into his writing has created a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The atmosphere of World War II helped enhance Lee s writing because it led to the debut of Captain America Issue #3 in 1941 with the help of Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. Lee used elements of the war and incorporated it into his work. The controversy and calamity of the war made Lee s Captain America a prominent figure during the war period because he epitomized anti Nazism in an unexpressed interventionist tone (Wright 474). Lee constructed a tone towards Captain America, which pledged to wage war against the enemies who were a threat to justice not only home in America but also out of the country. With this tone, Lee s work had the most attention in the World War II years. The influence of the war in Lee s work, however, led to some criticism. The ideology that Lee s Captain America held wasn t viewed properly by political groups of other countries at the time, but Lee found reverence from young readers who idolized patriotism. At the time, Marvel Comics was called Timely Comics, and Timely Comics became the first comic book company to publish anti Nazi stories. After World War II transitioned to the Cold War, America and the Soviet Union had high tensions between one another, and the feeling of uncertainty grew amongst the two nations. Lee used the high tension and uncertainty America faced with the Soviet Union, and incorporated them into his writing. Lee s style of writing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. IBM DB2 vs Oracle Essay For this week s paper I have chosen to do a comparison between IBM s DB2 database management system (DBMS) product and Oracle. Realistically, making such a comparison is akin to discussing religion with friends. Each person will have their own biases based on their own experiences. Looking for an unbiased opinion is much like looking for the Holy Grail, every bit as speculative and subjective with the results jaundiced by the outlook of the reporter (Lim, 2002). A decision between DB2 and Oracle should be based on what resources are available for use at the site. Is there specific hardware or software already onsite that can or will be used in the installation, if so this will have a major impact on the decision making process. Does the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Oracle 9i comes in three versions enterprise, standard, and personal. Oracle also requires the following patch levels on Windows operating systems (OS) for installation; Windows NT, service pack (sp) 5; Windows 2000, sp 1; Windows XP, none needed. Oracle 9i is also available for HP AIX, Compaq Tru64 Unix, Linux, and Sun Solaris (Chigrik, 2003). The DB2 Universal Database v8.1 comes in six flavors, DB2 Enterprise Server Edition, DB2 Workgroup Server Edition, DB2 Workgroup Server Unlimited Edition, DB2 Personal Edition, DB2 Universal Developers Edition, and DB2 Personal Developers Edition. The following patch levels are required based on the Windows OS it is installed on. Windows NT, sp 6a; Windows 2000, sp 2 is required for terminal services; Windows XP, none. As with Oracle, DB2 is also available for the following UNIX based OS s, AIX, Linux, Sun Solaris, and adds support for HP UX (Chigrik, 2003). Performing a flat out performance comparison between these two RDBMS is difficult mostly because both can be used to build a stable and efficient system. Most of the difference in performance can usually be traced back to the developer and the administrators for the respective systems. But, that said, a direct comparison is possible once a set of typical transactions have been defined, that can then be run under the different DBMS on different hardware and software platforms (Chigrik, 2003). In fact, this is what has been done by the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Santa Barbara Drought Essay California has had along history of dealing with its most vital resource water. It is not uncommon for a state/country to experience a drought that is the fluidity of the earth. Unfortunately it is extremely difficult to say when a drought will break for California it is vital that the state make breakthroughs in science and technology that can help us sustain a proper water supply that gives water to the masses. Exploring a section of California specifically in Santa Barbara, I will be looking at the history of water and finding innovative solutions for more sustainable practices within the county itself. Looking at past practices of water usage and the social, political, and current ideas of how drought has affected this area and the solutions for the enduring future. Santa Barbara lies on the south facing area of coastline. The city is between the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific Ocean with its Meditteran climate and pristine beaches Santa barabara is an ideal place to live and visit. This was a dispute that the city of Santa Barbara was unlawfully diverting water from the Santa Ynez River for domestic use and planning to construct another dam, and chow thought his water rights were being violated this led to the case of Gin S. • 8. Finding Truth In Walt Whitman s Song Of Myself The Romantic Period was a time very different from that of the previous movement, the Enlightenment. It was a time for creativity and it was a time of unity in nature and within themselves. During the Enlightenment, science and reason prevailed. Everything had set rules on how it should be and how people should act in their private and public lives. Truth was static and never changing until the Romantic Movement. Truth changed and was based on an individual s experience. Whereas during the Romantic period. Transcendentalists were people found during this time who, according to A Handbook to Literature, believed in finding truth within oneself where individuals could hear the voice of God. They believed each person should find his or her own path to walk with God instead of relying on an institution. This differed from the ideals of the Enlightenment in that during the Enlightenment, some believed that science was all the God one needed. Science was the place truth and knowledge was found, and there was no place in science for God. While no one would argue that today s executives earn more than ever before, a question arises over whether or not limits should be placed on the amount of compensation they should earn. Those who would oppose the motion of placing limits on the amount that executives should earn argue that CEOs pay is commensurate with their performance and the high risk nature of their job. Similarly, those in favour of the motion would argue that such high salaries only serve to encourage CEOs to engage in risky behaviour while imposing significant social and economic costs on everybody else. These black and white bears reside mainly in China where seventeen percent of the total population of pandas reside. They are habituated in bamboo forests, which are not only the panda s home, but also their main source of food. A panda s diet consists of ninety percent bamboo and ten percent of mushrooms, insects, fish, plants and other small rodents. These bamboo forests are being taken from them, because the human population is constantly expanding and using their bamboo forests as land for growing crops or to build roads. Combined with the natural dying on bamboo and logging, these defenseless panda bears are forced to seek new areas and see whether or not there is a sufficient amount of bamboo for them to consume, although many of them fail to do so and end up dying of starvation instead. As of today, there are only twenty nine diminished and fragmented areas that have the appropriate habitat to support the remaining panda bears. By recognizing these opportunities for growth, organizations can turn from good to great with the proper leadership. It s about changing the way the world perceives that strength. Throughout all of documented human history, patriarchal values and beliefs have been a dominant factor in society, literature, and culture. Forever seen as inferior, the strength that women truly have has had to hide behind the thought that a man is necessary for anything to succeed. The emotion of the vocalist and orchestra continues to increase because the vocalist makes their way to their high/head register to sustain notes to portray their anguish while the orchestra is playing arpeggiated chords set rhythmically to thirty second notes. • 30. The Bell Curve Dilemma And Performance Appraisal The Bell curve conundrum It is a well established fact that employed human capital provides the competitive edge to the firms operating in the same competitive space. Organizations that have motivated and talented individuals are likely to forge ahead of the pack, even if they have similar products or services. That is why it is important that we manage the performance of the employees well. We discuss the goals to be achieved during the year; provide feedback to employees on their progress and modify the direction as the year progresses and organizational direction shifts. At the end of the performance year, start pulling together information and evidence of how well the employees have achieved the goals. Then apply a rating which will govern their payouts, promotions and compensation and create development plans for the next year. We cannot fathom anything to go wrong in this textbook laid process. It has been a best practice after all! But somehow performance appraisal is the most hated organizational practice by the employees. No one is ever happy with the results of their performance appraisals. Many solid, successful, and happy employees find their ratings discouraging. At the same time we find the managers and HR to be fidgeting uncomfortably even after doing everything they could to ensure that the performers are well fitted in the bell curve. There has to be a better way. Have the companies like Microsoft, Cisco, Accenture and IBM found the better way by doing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 36. Analysis Of Black Music By Amiri Baraka Jazz was born in New Orleans and has been with us for more than half a century (Helm 1). Jazz has grown popular in the eyes of critics. This makes it easy for many people to have access to it and have their own views tainted by the opinion of others. Amiri Baraka, formerly known as LeRoi Jones, wrote about the negative sides to having white critics write on Jazz. This is important because in his writing Jones discussed music critics not understanding the true meaning of the song. Amiri Baraka s theory of music critics is correct because it sheds light on how music critics have had a hand in changing Jazz. In his writing Black Music, Amiri Baraka feels as the Jazz critics are missing the true meaning of the lyrics and are only viewing one side of the piece and not the deeper meaning. In his writing, Jazz, the Critics, and American Art Music in the 1920s, Mary Herron Dupree states agree with Baraka when she states, The discussion of jazz and its relationship to art music began slowly in periodicals in 1921 and by 1924 was intense (288). In other words, Jazz has seen an increase in popularity as the years have gone by. While the popularity began to increase Jazz culture also began to see new faces. Males in there 40 s and late 20 s are most likely to exceed the recommended level of alcohol consumption and young women aged 18 24 are foreseen to excessively drink alcoholic beverages (Nhmrc.gov.au, 2015). Adolescents aged 13 17 also engage in excessive drinking although evoked due to observing others such as guardians, siblings and peers as well as the existence of peer pressure to consume alcohol and appear socially acceptable. • 38. Coral Reef Research Paper Kelp forests and coral reefs both belong in delicate environments, which when disturbed can have catastrophic consequences for both of them. Certain processes can cause the eradication of both kelp forests and coral reefs, as will be discussed in the following paragraphs, including sewage runoff, changes in water chemistry, and land derived material from soil erosion. Coral reefs around the world are in constant decline, and this is a major problem. This is happening due to the direct and indirect effects of overfishing, and pollution that has derived from land. Both these factors have decimated the cover of coral reef species for over two centuries. Often involved in the degradation of coral reefs is a shift from the usual extensive covers of the coral, to extensive covers of microalgae. Examples from around the world have shown that corals can persist and survive through the long term, chronic stressors, such as overfishing and eutrophication, however cannot seem to survive and recover from short term, acute disturbances, such as storm damage or freshwater run off). Coral reefs that experience loss of herbivores or flood plumes are subjected to very rapid micro algae growth in the summer. If there has been a substantial reduction in herbivores, and no way to inhibit the growth of algae, the increase in cover would still occur in certain places (i.e. the Great Barrier Reef), with or without the change in nutrient availability. Others, however, argue that cinema is an important and relevant art medium no matter its form. Digital cinema, while making use of new and different technologies such as animation, is the next step in the evolution of film. Contrary to what certain theorists believe, it is the most efficient and most artistically inclined way to create films as it offers a world of possibilities.
