California Fire Department
In 1970, the Chaparral Region of Southern California suffered immense devastation from wildfires
that burned for several days, burning more than half a million acres of land, destroying over 700
structures and killing 16 people. During the subsequent debriefing and critiques done by the two
primary agencies, Los Angeles County and Los Angeles City FireDepartments, four major obstacles
were identified. The two departments agreed that while there was cooperation between the
departments, the identified obstacles definitely impeded the efforts put forth to extinguish the fire.
Terminology between the departments was an initial obstacle that needed to be addressed. The
critique found that because each agency had a variety of terms for the same equipment, there was
confusion when requesting or identifying it. Due to the lack of distinct planning for the wild land
fires, the commanders did not have the ability to deploy the proper units when or where needed.
Units were incorrectly sent to areas, or mistakenly instructed to stand down or stay in quarters when
not needed. The inconsistency in response plans of the different agencies was also an obstacle
worth discussing. Again, each agency had there own... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Quentin Tarantino s The Giant Face
Quentin Tarantino is one of the most recognizable directors alive today and one of the most
influential during the 1990 s to 2010s s. The passion he poured into his films garnered
worldwide acclaim and recognition. He has won two Oscars for best writing and original
screenplay and been nominated for best director twice. His films are generally characterized by
two aspects: excellent dialogue and masterfully edited scenes. Two of his masterpieces are Pulp
Fiction (1994) and Inglorious Basterds (2009). In Pulp Fiction, I have chosen the excerpt from
when the pawn shop owner enters the back room to just before Julius calls Jimmy (1:42:09
1:56:37,) and from Inglorious Basterds, I have chosen from the title Chapter Five: Revenge of the
Giant Face to when Colonel Landa bids the Basterds impersonating Italian cameramen farewell
(1:45:43 1:55:10) to analyse. Tarantino is an undeniable auteur, creating worlds that could exist in
our own, enabling his audiences to be emersed in stories far more intresting than our own mundane
lives. Through his excellent direction, the films draw attention to the cheapness of life and society s
desensitised attitude towards violence. One of the many aspects of film that Tarantino excels at is
dialogue. In the film Inglorious Basterds, Tarantino explores suspense and tension with a variety of
tools, foremost among them, the use of dialogue to immerse the viewer in the suspense of the film.
In the excerpt from Inglorious Basterds, while

Key Characteristics Of Gentrification
Gentrification is the process of renovating and revitalizing undervalued and dilapidated residential
and commercial areas by the middle or upper class. It is driven by the notion called the rent gap .
The rent gap is the difference between current rent and potential rental income. People will invest in
these deteriorated urban areas to obtain potential rent in the future. Consequently, once new money
flows in these areas, it forces rent to surge. High rents force low income residents to relocate from
the area. This is one of the key characteristics of gentrification, the displacement of local residents.
Gentrification is driven by both private investment and government policies.
Gentrification is a growing concern in New York. It causes... Show more content on

The Nation publication writes Miguel Robles DurГЎn.....makes a convincing case that among the
most useful tools are limited equity cooperatives of the kind established under New York s 1955
Limited Profit Housing Companies Act, better known as Mitchell Lama. Under these programs,
households own shares in a building, but the price at which they can sell their shares is limited for a
certain period of time, usually twenty years. These arrangements offer stability of ownership
without the skyrocketing prices that accompany real estate speculation. There are numerous
benefits of this program. Mitchell Lama Housing projects promote economic and social
integration in their communities. They have become stable and burgeoning communities. The
integral components in ensuring the success of this program are maintaining the quality of the
cooperatives and making sure housing units over time are slowly pushed to market values. As
the designated time for subsidized rent ends, the surge in rents forces some households to leave
the area. However, if there was a more gradual increase in rent prices over time, then this would
not be the case. Oversight of these cooperatives is pivotal to their success. State Sen. Jeff Klein
said that The Mitchell Lama program, I believe, was probably the greatest housing program we
ever created in New York State because it was based on a very simple premise: that various

Igor Reznikoff s Ideas To Create The Analytical Engine
Johnson refers to Lovelace and Babbage as time travelers, although he doesn t mean so literally
the point he is conveying is that they were both drastically ahead of their era in a creative and
innovative sense. Working together, Ada and Charles were able to combine their out of the box
ambitions and systematic thought process to create the Analytical Engine. I believe it was Ada s
background in mathematics and her father s work that drove her to push the boundaries of what
Babbage had in mind. Ada said, the Engine might compose elaborate and scientific pieces of music
of any degree of complexity or extent in reference to her vision of using the Analytical Engine for
more than complex number crunching (265). It was the constant challenge the two presented one
another that molded the Engine into what it became.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although he was a music ethnographer, Igor used knowledge from his field in an anthropological
setting by studying the cave paintings found in France in relation to their placement and the sound
produced in those areas. Reznikoff s theory is that Neanderthal communities gathered beside the
images they had painted, and they chanted or sang in some kind of shamanic ritual, using the
reverberations of the cave to magically widen the sound of their voices (Johnson 99). If the
connections had not been made between the sound amplification in the cave and the concentrations
of paintings, we would not have the same insight we do today about Neanderthal communities and
incidences of cave paintings around the globe would seem

The Iraq War Analysis
In the days following September 11, 2001, Americans faced an onslaught of headlines designed
to generate fear and outrage regarding the terrorist group Al Qaeda and Iraqi leader, Saddam
Hussein. These fears were only heightened when President George W. Bush declared war on Iraq
on March 20, 2003, with the intentions of helping Iraqis achieve a united, stable, and free country
despite the tyrannical rule imposed by Saddam Hussein ( George W. Bush: Announcement ). For the
next eight years, Americans lived in an era of anger and confusion regarding the intentions behind
the war that dramatically changed life in the United States. The Iraq Wargreatly affected American

One relationship that was severely damaged was the U.S. ties to the United Nations. Before the
war, only a small minority of Americans [were] ready to go to war with Iraq without UN
Security Council approval, something they never provided (Kull 569). The United States
deliberately defied the wishes of the United Nations in order to depose Saddam Hussein. The
United States made its intentions clear when the Bush Administration announced that they would
circumvent the UN if necessary to depose Saddam Hussein after being unsatisfied by Iraq s
12,000 page declaration of its weapons program that was produced in order to clarify the weapon
capacity of the nation, deeming it insufficient proof that there were no weapons of mass
destruction in Iraq (Weathers). This angered many European nations save Britain, who initially
supported the US in its endeavors. Ironically, the U.S. defied the UN to enforce UN resolutions
regarding the harboring of weapons of mass destruction that were put in place following the Gulf
War and proposals put into effect regarding weapons inspection programs in Iraq. By doing so,
however, the U.S. denigrat[ed] it as irrelevant and belittl[ed] its role in reconstruction efforts after
the war (Thakur 3298). Because of the United States actions, a precedent was set in which any

Essay About Peace In Cologeria
Given the tumultuous political environment in Colombia during this period, it may come as a
surprise that a third round of peace talks commenced in 1998. The FARC, having reached its peak
during this time, was waging an all out insurgency against the state. The push for peace came at the
behest of the citizenry rather than the state. In a strong display of unity, 10 million Colombians
voted to for the Mandate of Peace in October of 1997 in a popular vote. Thus the governmentunder
the Pastrana administration initiated peace negotiations amidst a brutal warwith the FARC.

Through the public hearings, 25,000 delegates participated in presenting various proposals for
peace. This process was also unique in that various international actors, including European, Latin
American, and Canadian governments as well as representatives from the United Nations,
participated either directly or indirectly. U.S. support for the negotiations was weakened, however,
by the fact that the FARC had recently abducted and killed three American activists. This had the
effect of weakening the overall peace process. Nonetheless, the third peace process had begun.
The agenda for negotiation in May of 1999 included a variety of different topics, focusing on 12
main issues and 48 sub issues. These issues included: human rights, agrarian policy (the distribution
of lands bought with drug money and the substitution of illicit crops), natural resources, the revision
of the economic and social development model, reform of the Justice system and the state, accords
on International Humanitarian Law (IHL), the redefinition of the peace time role of the armed
forces, and international agreements and the democratic mechanisms legitimizing these. Efforts
were made on behalf of both parties to build confidence. Among these efforts was the initiation of
ceasefires during Christmas and the New Year in 1999/2000. It is important to note that, though
each side was continuing in the peace process, there was no overarching

Poetry Close Reading
The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner written by Randall Jarrell is a poem that introduces three
major ideas in only five lines. These ideas are birth, death, and war. Jarrell is able to accomplish a
lot in this short poem by using diction and syntax such as metaphor and figurative language. The
title of the poem automatically shifts the reader s mind to expect a poem about war and death.
However, after reading the title and seeing how clear it is, when taken literally, line one of the
poem is very confusing. If we try to understand the poem at a basic literal level, here s what s
happening: There is a gunner in the ball turret, underneath a bomber plane. It is so cold up high
that the lining of his wet jacket is being ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The speaker s life before war is left far below and even feels like an illusion. Like a dream, it is
gone. When the speaker woke to black flak and the nightmare fighters , he woke up to his worst
nightmare, enemy fighters approaching the bomber. If we take a close look at lines three and
four together, there is a stark contrast. Line three is very peaceful and serene, the words dream ,
life , and earth usually have positive connotations; while line four is certain death, with words
like nightmare and black flak . The last line of the poem is very straightforward, and is almost
prose. It tells us exactly what we need to know. When the bomber got back to the base, they
cleaned the speakers remains out of the turret with a hose. If we continue the metaphor of the
bomber being the mother, we can conclude that the speaker is being born into death through the
womb of the State . The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner by Randall Jarrell is able to accomplish
so many thing with so little lines mainly through the use of metaphor and diction. It explains the
terrors of wars in gruesome detail and explains the ways in which wars, in a sense breed and birth
death. To some, this poem is seen as the ultimate poem of war, and rightly

Bizzozero Staining Procedure
An experiment Evaluating whether PCNA supports the classification of Bizzozero (1894) tissues
tissues placed in three categories, reflecting their replicative potential.
Introduction
The aim of this experiment was to utilise PCNA and staining procedures to determine whether
different tissue cell samples proliferate. Tissue which exhibited brown stains prove cell
proliferation and mitotic divisions, this would suggest it being the in the first group of Bizzozero s
grouping of tissue types. Tissue samples which showed no brown staining meant no cells had
proliferated and therefore were of a different tissue type that do not regenerate while present in the
body. The PCNA proteinis present during cell division/mitosis therefore, its presence suggests that
cell proliferation is occurring or has occurred. An area can be stained using brown
diaminobenzidine (DAB) by using an antibody that is against the PCNA protein. A primary
antibody then attaches to the PCNA molecule, and a secondary antibody (horse radish peroxidase)
attaches to the primary antibody. A... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Tissue sample B showing no brown staining visible:
Tissue sample C showing minimal brown staining:
Conclusion
The three different tissue types exhibit differing levels of cell replication. Proliferation did not
take place in tissue sample A compared to Tissue sample b having very minimal cell proliferation.
The experiment conducted supports Bizzozero s 1894 article which illustrates that based on where
the cells originate from, the cell proliferation will differ.

The Universal Theme of Good vs. Evil in Literature
The Universal theme of good vs. evil
The universal theme of good and evil is one of the most commonly used themes in literature. In
literature some writers choose to directly state themes of confidence, while others allow them to
indirectly develop. English literature often tends to concern itself more and more with the intended
meanings of the work through common stories of good and evil those are holding specific symbolic
meanings, whether these meanings represent good or evil, the readers continue to see the true
meanings of select works. Writers most often develop works using themes of good and evil,
whether they state them symbolically or directly. Readers may determine a theme as an idea,
point of view, or perception, embodied and expanded upon in a work. Good and Evil in Terms
of Religious Beliefs Good is usually associated with ideas of God. Evil is usually associated with
ideas of the devil. When the writer conveys messages of good and evil, they commonly use the
symbols of light and dark, or general opposites. Light, remaining the universal symbol of good,
may be defined as love, happiness, or even as a heavenly presence. As Opposing to darkness which
continues to represent evil as anything threatening, cold hearted, or aggressive. Light tends to
expresses a positive affirmation while darkness carries the negative sense of chaos.

What factors lead to the rise of the pictorial poster? When looking at what factors lead to the rise
of the pictorial poster, it is clear to see that the majority of them occurred in late nineteenth
century Paris and that perhaps one man, Jules ChГ©ret, can be thanked for exploiting and

reserved for the fine arts. As well as Jules ChГ©ret and his mastery of lithography I will be

Descriptive Football Game
Sweat, It s dripping so bad it s just like the drips of water that comes from your cold bottle of
water. That s how football is, this football season was nothing but hard work for me specially this
game the one game I really really wanted to win. Ludington our rivals, this team is the team we
needed to beat no matter what, moreover if it was on their home field but, it didn t go that way, it
wasn t our time to shine.
This is how the game had gone. We got off the bus all suited up pads on cleats tied up ready to go
but... That tight feeling in your chest the overwhelming fluttering pain that makes it so hard to
breath. Your stomach feels sickish and the feeling is like you re going to throw up, that is what
everyone on our team had felt. None of us are really scared. We are ready to go out there and do
our best. We have all gotten ready for this game, that whole week was for this team to lose to us on
their field.
It finally came into action the first play we are on defense you could tell that half of us had that
stupid feeling in your chest and stomach known as butterflies. It made most of the team a little
scared and needed a wake up call which there was, when that first play is called they got a

Bullying Is The Job Of Parents And Schools
Bullying is when you force someone to do something they do not want to, and it can cause stress
or then leads to suicide in some cases. In Schoolyard Bullies by Stephanie Simon, prosecutor
James Backstrom maintains school bullies should go to jail. However, I do not think bullies
should go to jail, because there are different degrees of bullying. Some bullies are victims, and
sending bullies to jail does not cure them. Stopping bullying is the job of parents and schools.
Parents play a key role in preventing and responding to bullying. Parents should recognize the
warning signs that the child is involved in bullying. Children could be being bullied, bullying
others, or witnessing bullying. Although these signs could signal other issues, parents should
talk to their children if they display any sort of behavioral or emotional changes. Many times
children won t ask for help, so it is important to know what to look for. If the child is at
immediate risk of harming himself or others, parents need to get help right away. Just sending
the children who are bullies to go to jail, and doing jail time are not a good way to correct
children s behaviors. I understand the rationale . . . , but incarceration is a fairly big stick, says
Susan Limber, a bullying expert at Clemson University. You can get the same payoff with a lot less
drastic measures (Simon 2). Moreover, if the children go to jail, they might not change their mind,
even though their behavior will be

Education Inequality In Education
In order for education to have a positive impact in communities, it is essential to ensure equality in
learning for all people. This does not necessarily mean ensuring equality in education outcomes for
all people because individual factors such as competency and ability varies among people. Students
from poor families are more likely to attend schools with a worse infrastructure, less qualified
teachers, less ambitious peers, and outmoded practices. Because of this, they are more likely to
have lower learning outcomes. Therefore, reducing educational inequality will have positive effects
on developmental outcomes. Ensuring equality in educationdelivery will also reduce discontent in
countries and cities (Inequality in education: The challenge of Measurement). Because of this,
urgent solutions are needed to address educational inequality.
Duncan and Murnane argue that economic and educational inequality greatly affects children s
educational and developmental outcomes in Restoring Opportunity: The crisis of inequality and the
challenge for American education. Duncan and Murnane point out that since the 1970s, there has
been a shift in technology and globalization. This makes receiving a K 12 education more
important for life skills than it has been in the past. Since the 1970 s, globalization and
computerization have decreased blue collar jobs and enhanced the job market. Despite this, there is
still an issue of students attending and paying for college, and this problem is

Analysis Of Bree s Cupcake Shop Essay
Bree s Cupcake Shop Bree s Cupcake Shop is a small shop that provides baked goods, those of
cupcakes in particular. A cupcake is essentially a small version of a cake that is designed to
serve one person. The mission of Bree s Cupcake shop is to provide all of its consumers that
have a sweet tooth with delicious treats that are affordable, but taste like luxury. The end goal is
to grow into a shop that sells amazing cupcakes in which consumers have a high demand for.
Each and every single cupcake that will be provided at this shop will be baked in store and
served fresh each and every day. Consumers also have the option of ordering special made
cupcakes that consist of particular frosting colors, different types of toppings or even special
messages on them for special occasions. The best part about Bree s Cupcake Shop is that each
and every cupcake is made to provide the customer with a yummy bite, from the actual filling of
the cupcake, to the icing that will be placed on top. The cupcakes purchased from Bree s
Cupcake shop will come in a box, which will contain a total of 12 cupcakes. The reason I believe
the goals of this particular business will be attainable is due to the fact that there is a huge market
and majority of it consists of consumers that enjoy things that are affordable, but taste of high
quality, so I believe this business will be successful in reaching a huge market. In order to achieve
my goals, I plan on buying majority of my products in bulk, so that I

Overview Of Chemistry
Everyday the world of Chemistry is evolving, not only to assist us in understanding the functions of
the world around us, but also to assist in improving it. Through their immense research regarding
health care, chemists at the University of Oxford have fabricated a new, innovative method to 3D
print laboratory produced cells to create living structures. Such an unprecedented approach to such
an issue possesses the capability to permanently revolutionize regenerative medicine, allowing the
creation of complex tissues and cartilage that could significantly support, mend or augment
diseased or no longer functional parts of the body. Through this discovery, our understanding of the

In order for this theory to succeed, the cells were confined within protective nanolitre droplets
wrapped in a lipid coating that could be constructed, in a layer by layer manner, into living
structures. Using this process, manufacturing printed tissues in this way can increase the survival
rate of the individual cells, enabling the team to ameliorate modern strategies through assembling
each tissue one drop at a time to a more advantageous resolution. In order to be utilized properly, it
is requisite for the artificial tissues to possess the ability to imitate the functions and behaviors of
the human body. The method allows the production of patterned cellular constructs, which, once
completely developed, copy or possibly enhance natural tissues. Dr Alexander Graham, lead author
and 3D Bioprinting Scientist at OxSyBio proclaimed, We were aiming to fabricate three
dimensional living tissues that could display the basic behaviours and physiology found in natural
organisms. To date, there are limited examples of printed tissues, which have the complex cellular
architecture of native tissues. Hence, we focused on designing a high resolution cell printing
platform, from relatively inexpensive components, that could be used to reproducibly produce
artificial tissues with appropriate complexity from a range of cells including stem cells. The
researchers hope and strongly believe that, with further development, the materials could have an
immense impact on

Why Is The Crusades Justified Dbq
The Crusades were Holy Wars during the 11th century that intended to expand Christian territory.
The Crusades began when Christians initiated military campaigns to take control of the Holy
Lands around the city of Jerusalem. Ever since the fall of the Roman Empire, Christianity had been
so strong that people were able to spread it through campaigning. Different people from the time
period of the Crusadeshave varying viewpoints on it, a few of which being that the Crusades
caused fear and destruction, the violence of the Crusades were justified because of religious
reasons, and that the Crusades were not only harmful to Muslims, but Jews and Christians.
The first viewpoint believed by many is that the Crusades caused fear and destruction. Documents
4 and 5 especially support this opinion. These sources both explain the demolition caused in
Southwest Asia by the Europeans during the Crusades. Document 4, the excerpt from The
Crusades Through the Arabs Eyes, describes the torture and murder of Arabs by Franks. One vivid
description in the source is, The Franks arrived at dawn. It was carnage. As Ibn ... Show more

Documents 3 and 7 support this opinion. Document 3 shows the harm Christians brought to Jews
during the Crusades. The writer of this chronicle describes how heavily the Jews prayed in fear of
the Christians attacks. A piece of information not mentioned in this document, but that is relevant
to the topic, is that attacks during the Crusades on Jews originally started from small groups of
peasants and were condemned by the Church, but soon the Jews started getting attacked by bigger
and bigger mobs. The author of Source 7, is outraged by the attacks on Christians from Crusaders,
and believes it is a violation of the Church. A quote describing these attacks is, the divine body and

Speech On Racism In Sports
Without a doubt, we look at athletes today and from the past as if they are larger than life
individuals. They show their personality through talent no matter what they play; some are better
than others, for example some can kick or throw. However, at the end of the day they all have a
different voice and a different story. People expect them to turn a blind eye to everyday events
because of their status. People think of athletes as celebrities, they say they do not go through the
same struggles as everyday people. That statement is far from the truth when it pertains to the issue
of racism. Racism has been an unresolved problem for years whether it is in sports or athletes
speaking for what they believe. Racism has had a big impact on sports such as Germany hosting the
olympics and cheating, N.B.A. owners thinking they rule over their players, and the hidden
discrimination that happens in locker rooms. Many times athletes have stood up for what they
believed just to be shot down. Nowhere in their contracts does it state that because they are
professionals that they must compromise their freedom of speech. Whether it be refusing to meet
with the president, speaking out on racial injustices, or not standing for the national anthem, athletes
have a strong voice in the fight against discrimination and other traumatic events. The fight for
equality in sports and throughout America is a process that includes multiple organizations, the

Technology has become a groundbreaking opportunity and advantage in the business world,
especially for marketing. With technology, marketers can market on social networks, text
messages, the app store, etc. Technology has become a huge source in expanding a brand and
marketing a brand in ways that were not possible before. More people are spending more time on
mobiles, tablets, and laptops than in an actual store. So marketers have to reach customers through
all of these devices in real time and create campaigns that will work across social media, display
advertising and e commerce (Benady, 2014). Marketers are using technology to reach out to certain
target markets as well. The social media outlets include: Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram,... Show

Positive And Negative Effects Of Dictatorships
I have always found the human need for power and domination interesting, which is why I choose
it for the Research Project. I am interested about how the Dictatorial style of government affects the
overall growth of the humanities globally. My goal for this project is to research and understand
the positive and negative effects of dictatorships on the academic growth as well as growth in the
humanities. There are clear negative effects like the loss of literature in countries such as Germany,
where specific types of book from certain eras were burned. In addition to that there are positives
such as leaders focusing on education more than other areas of government spending. The paper
that would be written using the information gathered through research on this topic would be
persuasive, arguing that though there are some positive effects, dictatorships have an overall
negative impact on intellect and the humanities.
My working research question is: Are the net effects of dictatorships on the areas of the
humanities including art and literature as well as academics as a whole positive or negative?
My corresponding thesis statement is: On the grounds of global loss of art and literature as well
as suffering academics, dictatorships have a negative effect on the country they govern as well as
the world as a whole. I will research historical occurrences of dictatorships globally. In addition to
that I will research the effects on academics in specific countries. I will also

Taking a Look at the Giraffe Award
Caring. Risking. Healing. What do all of these of these have in common? These are all criteria of
the Giraffe Award. The Giraffe Award is given to people who have shown a lot of caring, people
who placed themselves at risk, people whose actions were healing, not divisive, and people who
went above and beyond the call of duty. Six cases have been evaluated. A decision was made and
now only two people will receive the Giraffe Award.
Jerry Foster is a TV helicopter pilot. He gets paid to find news stories, but what he actually does
makes him worthy of the Giraffe Award. Jerry loves to save lives. Saving lives is clearly an act of
caring. He is paid to find stories but he goes above and beyond by saving lives. Sometimes when
he is saving people he forgets to capture the story on film, which puts him at financial risk, because
he could get fired. When he saves people he heals them. Jerry Foster meets all the criteria of the
Giraffe Award which is why he deserves the award.
Dedication and perseverance. Joseph Nicholas and David Francis Sr. have worked very hard to
reinvigorate their language, Maine s Passamaquoddy Indian Tribe language. However they are
an example of two people who are not worthy of the Giraffe Award. The reasons are obvious.
They didn t act out of caring. They just want people to learn their language. That is a selfish
reason. Also they didn t have any risk. They were at no social, physical, or financial risk. Some
people might argue that they went above

The History of Alcatraz Island Essay
The History of Alcatraz Island
Alcatraz Island has quite a distinct history. Many people know that Alcatraz served as a federal
prison, but most are reluctant to know that this island served as fort. Built before the Civil War, it
served two main purposes. First, that it was to guard the San Francisco bay area from enemy ships
against a foreign invasion, and second, to hold hostage prisoners of war or POW s as they were
called. In this report, I ll show you how this fortress came to be a federal prison, why it is no
longer in operation today, and most importantly, to show why it was built in the first place. When
the great Gold Rush of 1849 first started, California grew from what would be considered a small,

By the early 1860 s, Alcatraz had 111 cannons. Some were enormous, firing a fifteen inch ball
weighing over 450 pounds. Defenses included a row of brick enclosed gun positions called case
mates to protect the dock; a fortified gateway or a Sally Port to block the entrance road; and a
three story citadel on top of the island. This served both as an armed barracks and as a last line
defense strategy. Even though Alcatraz was built to withstand a foreign invasion, its most
important use was during the Civil War, 1861 1865. Seeing as it was the only completed fortin the
entire bay, it was vital in the protecting from Confederate Raiders. Early in the war, ten thousand
rifles were moved to Alcatraz from the State armory, to prevent them from being used by
southern sympathizers. The crew of a Confederate privateer were among the first inmates to be
held within The Rock. Alcatraz s notoriety as a penitentiary overshadows its earlier, and longer
use by the Army. Surprisingly, this small island once was the most powerful fort west of the
Mississippi River. There was some limited modernization of the island s defenses after the Civil
War. Rifled cannons were mounted. In 1854 some 450 electrically controlled underwater mines
were brought to the island to protect the Bay. However, as the ships of potential enemies became
more and more powerful, the defenses were increasing! ly obsolete. In 1907 Alcatraz officially

The Perception Of A Social Group
The ability to manipulate perception when it comes to social movements or collective action is
key. Not just for those on the outside looking in, but those who are participating as well. It not
only determines what a social group will do to invoke change, it will also affect how a society
will agree or disagree with the change. This manipulation of perception is best defined as
framing, and is more than just labeling something as good or bad. Pulling from the articles read
from this week the most convincing conceptualization of the term framing was the argument that
it consisted of three elements, with the first being the diagnosis of something as problematic and
need for alteration, followed by a proposed solution that specifies what needs to be done, and
finally a call to rational engagement in corrective action. (Snow Benford 1988) The first point
highlighted the importance of contention when it comes to collective action. Problems within any
given society are prevalent at all times, however, not until there is a call for a change does
collective action occur. Contention rests in the need for a change, whether or not opportunity is
the catalyst for contention is debatable, however the conceptualizing of framing laid out by Snow
and Benford also brings into question whether or not collective action is a choice rather than a
response. In the each of the three steps mentioned above there has to be a framing. There has to be
a framing of a situation as problematic and

Forward Facing Car Seat Safety
The most exciting part of raising a child is watching them reach different milestones of their life.
From sitting up, to talking and walking, to their first birthday most parents are ecstatic and
dismal. No parent would ever put their child in any danger or to purposely hurt them. But by
simply keep kids in a rear facing position can be 500% times safer. In 100 car accidents, 8 children
will die or have serious injuries in a rear facing car seatcompared to the 40 children that will die or
have serious injuries in forward facing car seats. Putting a childin a forward facing car seat, before
their second birthday, that creates uninformed decisions that can cause incomplete growth, serious
injuries, and death. First, the biggest problem is the myths that go along with car seats and car
seat safety. CNN reports that 24% of parents will turn their children around before they reach two.
One reason is the huge myth that a child has outgrown the position of a rear facing position. Most
car seats have adjustable positions as the child grows, as well as, have weight and height limits

What Does Grendel Represent Evil
Grendel, the first villain in the epic Beowulf, is portrayed as a demon from Hell and a descendant
of Cain. He is twelve feet tall, with red eyes and ravening jaws. Grendel is somewhat like a man,
with a head, two arms, and two legs, and he is described as such:
Grendel his name, hating the sound of the harp,
The minstrel s song, the bold merriment of men
In whose distorted likeness he was shaped.
The narrator tells us that Grendel attacks Hrothgar s mead hall every night, and that his incentive is
the minstrel s song and the happiness of men, which irritated him.

the ultimate good, and Grendel represents evil as he kills Hrothgar s men and disrupts the serenity

Socrates s View On Plato s The And Aristophanes s The...
Elenchus, as a famous Socratic method for education, uses dialogue and questions to approach
philosophical truths. The method is presented in both Plato s the Euthyphro and Aristophanes s the
Clouds. However, Socrates s personal image and characteristics, as well as the nature of his
questioning differ a lot in these two works. While the Euthyphro presents a philosopher king
guiding the less wise people in discovery of truths, Socratesin the Clouds has little interest in either
exploring the ethical truth or helping others get out of Platos cave . Instead, he is portrayed as a
sophist who corrupts people with mysterious and useless knowledge, ignores traditional Athenian
education, and debilitates Athenian men. Compared to Plato s focus on Socrates s wisdom
reflected in the dialogue, the Clouds is a distorted interpretation of Socrates s elenchus. Rather than
justifiably criticizing Socrates, Aristophanes depicts him from a common Athenian s perspective. It
is this misunderstanding of the value of Socrates s teaching by Athenian citizens that constitutes the
failure of elenchus in both the Clouds and the Euthyphro.
Socrates s image in the two works differ firstly in his attitude towards knowledge and towards
himself. A typical statement of Socrates, both in the Euthyphro and in other Plato s works, is that
he has no clear knowledge. He is different from the public because he knows that he does not know.
Neither does he claim to teach or corrupt the young (Euthyphro, p.2

Troxel Vs. Granville is the case at hand, concerning the lives of two grandchildren who are not
allowed to see their paternal grandparents. Visitation rights is what the grandparents are seeking
to attain. Gary and Jennifer Troxel are both physically and mentally capable of being with their
two grandchildren, but instead have been forbidden by their daughter in law. Brad Troxel, the
father of these two children committed suicide six years ago. The mother forbids visitation
rights at all. To uphold the necessity of compromise, visitation rights must be granted to these
loving, caring, and able grandparents. These children will lose out on a colossal amount of
family history and values unless the Supreme Court rules in favor of the grandparents.
Grandparents may not be a part of the nuclear family (father, mother, and children). However
with the absence of the father they already lack a nuclear family to learn from. A compromise

Simply put one may be bashful or impotent or aggressive to the extreme of being a sex murderer.
To carry his study further, Freud considered the sexuality of an individual.
Through this particular study, Freud contends that one must go back to birth, which is the
manifestation of an individual s sexuality. The oral phase is where life begins and that is why
babies explore everything with their mouth, the center of all sensations. The following phase is
the anal or sadistic anal phase where excretory functions are the center of everything. Pleasures
are experienced in the anus during bowel movements. Finally these erotically tinged pleasures
are experienced when the sexual organ is manipulated. Thus psychosexual development
progresses from the oral through the anal to the phallic (in psychoanalytic theory phallic refers
to both male and female sexual organs) stage. During the height of the phallic phase, about the
ages of three to six, these libidinous forces focus on the parent of the opposite sex and lend an
erotic cast to the relationship between parent and child (son/mother or daughter/father). This
focus is known as the Oedipus phase for boys and the Electra phase for girls. The phallic phase is
followed by a period of latency where sexual drives lay dormant until puberty when they are
reawakened and individuals become more aware of the sexual roles they will play as an adult.

in the United States. American Immigration Council. N.p., 29 Nov. 2016. . 24 Apr. 2017.
In the report The Criminalization of Immigration in the United States written for the American
Immigration Council, Walter Ewing, Daniel E. MartГnez and RubГ©n G. Rumbaut analyze how
immigrants are often stigmatized as criminals, even though the statistics show otherwise. The paper
studies the criminalization of immigrants in great detail by using several highly credible sources
such as National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC) and
National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health) and conclude that Fears that
immigration will lead to an escalation of crime and delinquency are unfounded.

The Book Thif Book Analysis
Brian Percival s 2014 film adaptation of the novel, The Book Thief is set during World War II
and focuses heavily on the Nazi Regime and the horrors surrounding the war. It also introduces
the reader to a German perspective of the war. During World War II, the Nazi Party reigned terror
over Germany and many people became victims of the cruelty of their circumstances. This is
demonstrated implicitly throughout, the film of The Book Thief , however, the fear of the war
still surrounds the characters in the film. Despite being a film, that presents a German view on the
war, the film clearly displays the sense of fright that would be observed by a Jew during the
Holocaust. The fear can also be sensed after the innocent acts of the child characters in the film.
Despite the film not explicitly displaying the terror caused by the Nazis in Germany, The Book
Thief still demonstrated a sense of fright amongst the characters, that would realistically be present
during World War II.
During World War II, the act of opposing the Nazi view could potentially result in death, however,
not displaying the rituals and practices of supporting the Nazi party could also result in punishment.
Consequently, the film also shows various instances where the act of not abiding by the laws or
practices of the Nazis resulted in harsh punishment. The fear is clearly evident in the words of
Rosa Hubermann as she gives great importance to the Nazi flag, stating ...if we don t find it, it will

Le Villi Ipaccini Research Paper
Singing and the opinions of the human voice is a very subjective universe. What qualities make
a great or even a good voice? Why does one voice stand out over another? Even if I did not have
life as a singer, I would still believe that the human voice is a great marvel. Some singers find a
musical home based in the vocal categories of what the Germans call fach. In this system of
classification, singers are bound, in some places, by the roles and composers in this system.
Where this classification usually bears no flexibility is in the categories of Wagnerian voices.
Simply, one is a Wagnerian or one is not. Rarely does a singer exist who embodies all of the
dramatic qualities as record for the work of Wagner. One exceptional singer... Show more content

With a lineage of music dating back for over one hundred years it was expected that Puccini
would follow his musical roots. His works represent very distinct parts of his life. Early in his
composition journey he wrote Le Villi, the poorly received, but stunningly beautiful Edgar, and
the regularly produced Manon Lescaut. He went on to also set La BohГЁme, Tosca and Madama
Butterfly. For the majority of his career he was under contract by Ricordi. Following death of
Ricordi in 1912 one considered if this would also be the end of works by Puccini. He later followed
with La Fanciulla del West (based on David Belasco s play. Belasco also wrote the original play for
with Madama Butterfly is based.) La Rondine, Il Tabarro, Suor Angelica, Gianni Schicchi and his
final opera Turandot. As a leading composer of the romantic and early part of the modern era,
German Richard Strauss is known for his highly dramatic and intense operas. Strauss work seems to
be, along with Gustav Mahler, the ultimate representation and evolution of German Romanticism
developed by Richard Wagner. Known for some unbelievable staggering orchestral music and
lieder, Strauss operas included Der Rosenkavalier, Elektra, Die Frau ohne Schatten, Ariadne

Symbolism In Salinger s The Catcher In The Rye
Salinger dispels common binary meanings assigned by society to many concepts, displaying the
spectrum of ways people can feel or react to any situation. As seen in The Catcher in the Rye,
Holden often shifts between roles such as the catcher , one who guards the innocence of youth, and
the caught , the embodiment of youthful purity that must be protected. Salinger uses shifts of
clothing as a recurring motif to signify shifts of position and destinies (Takeuchi), emphasizing how
one s role in life can be fluid, not static. Throughout his journey, Holden Caulfield, the main
protagonist and narrator of Catcher in the Rye, exhibits this through clothing such as his red
hunting hat. Holden claims this hat to be a people shooting hat (Catcher in the Rye), representing
his role as the catcher who seeks to hunt down the purity of childhoodin other humans, not animals.
Holden perceives Phoebe as perfect, constantly contrasting her the the phonies he meets. In doing
so, Salinger denotes Phoebe as the ideal Holden seeks. Despite his hat denoting him as the
catcher at first , Holden will at times adorn it, at others conceal it, or even transfer it to Phoebe,
along with its connotative meanings. By doing this, Holden entirely diverts the traditional
distinction, made by western society, between those who hunt, seek, or catch other animals, to the
prey they chase, and instead shows how Holden seeks to preserve childhood innocence, yet, at
times, needs the support of his sister when he is devastated. Holden s role as the catcher is
constantly changing and cannot be confined to the single definition that Holden himself creates
for the catcher in the rye as the person who only protects children from danger, but rather, must
not be seen as an absolute. Holden himself realizes this at the climax of the books as he watches
Phoebe ride the carousel and comments that if they fall off, they fall off, but it s bad if you say
anything to them even though it contradicts his previous claim that he wants to stop children from
failing in any way (Weesner) as the catcher in the Rye.
Salinger also creates ambiguity between the roles of mature adults and innocent children through
Holden, who is an adolescent that embodies

War Of The Roses And The War Of The Roses
The War of the Roses and mainly the Battle of Towton (1461), were savagely, horrendous, and
insanely bloody battles filled with thousands of deaths, deadly weaponry and overkill, that Britain
had ever seen before. Fought by the Houses of Lancaster and York for control over the English
throne for many years with the use of strategic planning, impressive leadership, and advanced
weaponry all explain the cruel savagery of medieval warfare. Advancement in weaponry and armor
was shown profusely throughout the Battle of Towtonwith the use of the suit of armor, poleaxe,
Mary rose longbow and the earliest handguns. The English Men At Arms were equipped with the
best armor, which composed of a suit or steal that could weigh up to sixty pounds. These soldiers
would fight on foot to protect their archers and because the horses couldn t not to armored
properly. The armor was very resistant to hand to hand combat, the heavy metal made for good
protection, but the downfall is that it was a heavy suit to have to fight in. The poleaxe was the
main used weapon at this time, consisted of an axe on one end and a sword on the other.
Nevertheless, this weapon was especially gruesome for smashing and taking down their
opponent in battle. Once the Yorkists had won the battle of Towton they savagely went after the
fleeing Lancastrians showing no mercy, cutting any survivors down causing a bloodbath. Using
the poleaxe and other swords they bloodily slashed, smashed and murdered the surviving
Lancastrians, causing a deadly defeat of the Lancastrian army and a cruel but a well earned
victory for the Yorkists. The Mary Rose long bow became the national weapon of England
during this time. It was a long, heavy bow that weighed up to one hundred and eighty pounds,
had a range of three hundred yards and if the bowman was well trained, it could shoot up to 20
arrows a minute. This weapon could penetrate most armor, but required great strength and practice
to use effectively. The handguns were the newest weapon at the time so they were used at close
range as they could not be shot very far, but were very deadly to the opponent that is getting shot
at. The weaponry of medieval warfare shows that this time period was bloody, gruesome

Essay on The Musical World of Aaron Copland
Aaron Copland was born on November 14th, 1900 in Brooklyn, New York, United States (3). His
parents, Harris Morris Copland and Sarah Mittenthal Copland, were Jewish immigrants from
Russia (6). Copland had four older siblings who grew up together. When he was eleven years old,
one of his sisters, Laurine, taught him how to play a piano(3). Laurine also influenced to his
musical world by introducing him to ragtime and opera (6). From 1913 to 1917, he took his first
formal piano lessons from Leopold Wolfsohn (3, 6). Wolfsohn introduced him to the pieces of the
great musicians such as Beethoven and Mozart. When he was fifteen, he attended a concert by
composer Ignacy Paderewski. The dream of becoming a composer sprouted inside him after... Show

During his years at the ACF, he became fascinated with the music of Debussy, Ravel, and
Scriabin. At that time, Paris was the center of European music after World War I. He traveled to
Italy, Germany, Austria, and other many European countries to discover and experience various
aspects of European music (6). He attended to numerous concerts and plays during his years in
Paris. He featured the works of European modern composers such as Stravinsky and Milhaud.
When Copland completed his studies in 1924, Boulanger requests him to compose a work for her
organ performance (6). Copland composes the Symphony for Organ and Orchestra, which was his
first orchestral score. Boulanger played the piece on January 11th, 1925 in New York, United
States. Serge Koussevitzsky, who was the conductor of the Boston Symphony, was impressed with
Copland s organ symphony and began to support Copland s works.
After completing the Symphony for Organ and Orchestra, he returned to United States (1). He
noticed that there was an artistic rebellion at the New York City while he was in France. The
mindset and the work of musicians in New York became much more progressive. In New York,
Copland joined to the League of Composers. This organization sponsored Copland s first piano
performance in United States. Copland performed The Cat and the Mouse and Passacaglia (1922)
at New York City in 1924 (3). Passacaglia was the work

Heaton manor letter
After reading the letter from Heaton manor I realised that this letter was written formally. This is
because the way the writer has written it is professional. The letter was drafted to the student s
parents about a trip. They used the words Dear at the beginning and Yours Faithfully at the end of
the page, which is only used if you are writing to a person that you do not know.
However, they wrote the letter to Parents and Careers so that it is generalised to whoever is
taking care of the child. This is because it is harder to write a letter to each parent. Also, Career is
used so that nobody is offended.
Although, it would have been exceeding if they wrote to each parent, this would make the parents
know that they have taken their time to write to each parent so their child could go to the trip.
Also, they have added the date. This material is added to show when the letter was written.
The address isn t added. Previously stated, this is because it would have taken the Head of ICT
longer, especially as they might not know the addresses of each student. Also, most of the logos
are either combined at the top or at the bottom of the page. This is used to show which company or
school this is from. In this letter, the colour blue is mostly used, for example, the logo. The

The Tragedy Of Columbine And Sandy Hook
Columbine and Sandy Hook, and the tragedy associated to them, shared a common denominator
often targeted by the media, violent video games. However, the bias of the media failed to bring
attention to other more prominent factors. These video games do not spur aggression as media
turns a blind eye to more telling elements such as mental health issues and bullying.
As the level of violence in video games increases, so does the level of concern for those who play
them. Some people are quick to blame school shootings on games just because the kid played a
violent game. The topic of videogames and violence can be compared to the chicken or the egg
question, which came first, violent games or violent behavior (Violence and Videogames).
However most kids in mass shootings tend to have easy access to guns and are mentally unstable. ...

Experience at a Church Service of the Amazing Grace Church...
1.1History of Christianity
Christianity is the religion based on the life, death and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth, also
known as the Christ or Messiah. Jesus was a Jewish teacher and prophet who lived in Palestine
in the first century CE. He revealed himself to be the Son of God in fulfillment of Hebrew
scripture, and taught that the Kingdom of God was imminent, bringing with it forgiveness and
new life for all who believed. His claim to be the Messiah roused opposition from religious and
political authorities and he was imprisoned and crucified. His followers believe that after his death,
Jesus was resurrected before being taken up to heaven.

Chapter 2: The Worship Service
2.1 The Songs
Worship comes in different forms depending on how the church wants the service to proceed.
For the Amazing Grace Church, the service began with the congregation singing a number of
worship songs to the Lord that lasted for about an hour. Christian praise and worship by music,
and in fact, music is a great tool for helping them feel closer to God. Music is an emotional
language because it effectively affects their emotions and the lyrics can swell their hearts. There
is nothing bigger and greater than the grace of God that is delivered to them from condemnation
through the sacrifice of his own Son. Thus, Christian chooses to praise and worship Him by
singing. While singing, the congregation stands on their feet and they seem to be affected by
the songs in some way as they raise their hands as a sign of accepting the Lord into their hearts.
The emotion that was thrown from the congregation was very distinctive to us as we could see
that the songs are an important tool of expression. According to the pastor of the Amazing Grace
Church, singing let the people focus on the worship, helps them respond to God s grace and also
guide them to reflect on God s glory. In his opinion, singing mean nothing if people do not respond
to what they have sang and related it to God and reflect it to make them better believers.

Intrinsic And Extrinsic Motivation
An organization may have any number of goals, for example, sales growth, market leadership,
profit maximization and customer satisfaction. It is clear that an organization will only be
successful if employees are performing their tasks at a consistently high level and in line with the
company s objectives. To achieve this, organizations have tended to reward employees who
demonstrate this high level of performance and behavior (Gatenby et al., 2008). These rewards may
be intrinsic and/or extrinsic. Many theorists have critically discussed the core aspects of employee
motivation, concluding that intrinsic and extrinsic rewards will only be motivating if these are of
value to the individual. Intrinsic motivation lies in the internal satisfaction of an individual
concerning only the enjoyment of the task itself. Whereas extrinsic motivation focuses on external
outcomes, in particular financial rewards (Psycnet.apa.org, 2017). In this essay rewards will be
regarded as tangible or intangible assets in response to an individual s achievement (Oxford
DictionariesвЋЄEnglish, 2017), and motivation will focus on the behavioral aspects of why an
individual s productivity and performance increases.
The extent to which an individual values a certain reward is entirely dependent on their personal
preferences and circumstances, as well as the composition of the task. When the reward received is
the reward most valued, motivation could increase only to the point where a competitive

Managing Investment Growth Of A Diversified Portfolio
Managing Investment Growth In order to maximize a portfolio s return, it is important to analyze
risk and diversify securities, while adhering to the goals of an investor. Through analyzing the
different classes of risk, one can match investments to an investor s risk tolerance and return
requirements. Even though some investments may present greater riskthey are countered by a
higher rate of return and vice versa, less risk corresponds to a lower return. Moreover, investment
risk can be substantially reduced through diversification, which spreads a portfolio across different
industries, businesses and investment options. The makeup of a diversified portfolio continually
changes based on an investor s time horizon and investment goals. In accordance with the Modern
Portfolio Theory(MPT), one can maximize return while reducing risk, through assessing
investments standard deviation and beta. When applied to the capital asset pricing model(CAPM) an
investor can determine what the expected rate of return should be and if the risk is worth it.
Therefore, by analyzing risk and diversifying investments one can maximize an investment growth,
increasing a portfolios return.
Investment Risk Investment risk assesses the overall level of uncertainty or volatility associated
with an investments potential returns. As a result, investment risk helps determine the likelihood of
receiving an increased or decreased amount of the expected return on an investment. While risk is

  • 2. California Fire Department In 1970, the Chaparral Region of Southern California suffered immense devastation from wildfires that burned for several days, burning more than half a million acres of land, destroying over 700 structures and killing 16 people. During the subsequent debriefing and critiques done by the two primary agencies, Los Angeles County and Los Angeles City FireDepartments, four major obstacles were identified. The two departments agreed that while there was cooperation between the departments, the identified obstacles definitely impeded the efforts put forth to extinguish the fire. Terminology between the departments was an initial obstacle that needed to be addressed. The critique found that because each agency had a variety of terms for the same equipment, there was confusion when requesting or identifying it. Due to the lack of distinct planning for the wild land fires, the commanders did not have the ability to deploy the proper units when or where needed. Units were incorrectly sent to areas, or mistakenly instructed to stand down or stay in quarters when not needed. The inconsistency in response plans of the different agencies was also an obstacle worth discussing. Again, each agency had there own... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 3. Quentin Tarantino s The Giant Face Quentin Tarantino is one of the most recognizable directors alive today and one of the most influential during the 1990 s to 2010s s. The passion he poured into his films garnered worldwide acclaim and recognition. He has won two Oscars for best writing and original screenplay and been nominated for best director twice. His films are generally characterized by two aspects: excellent dialogue and masterfully edited scenes. Two of his masterpieces are Pulp Fiction (1994) and Inglorious Basterds (2009). In Pulp Fiction, I have chosen the excerpt from when the pawn shop owner enters the back room to just before Julius calls Jimmy (1:42:09 1:56:37,) and from Inglorious Basterds, I have chosen from the title Chapter Five: Revenge of the Giant Face to when Colonel Landa bids the Basterds impersonating Italian cameramen farewell (1:45:43 1:55:10) to analyse. Tarantino is an undeniable auteur, creating worlds that could exist in our own, enabling his audiences to be emersed in stories far more intresting than our own mundane lives. Through his excellent direction, the films draw attention to the cheapness of life and society s desensitised attitude towards violence. One of the many aspects of film that Tarantino excels at is dialogue. In the film Inglorious Basterds, Tarantino explores suspense and tension with a variety of tools, foremost among them, the use of dialogue to immerse the viewer in the suspense of the film. In the excerpt from Inglorious Basterds, while ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Key Characteristics Of Gentrification Gentrification is the process of renovating and revitalizing undervalued and dilapidated residential and commercial areas by the middle or upper class. It is driven by the notion called the rent gap . The rent gap is the difference between current rent and potential rental income. People will invest in these deteriorated urban areas to obtain potential rent in the future. Consequently, once new money flows in these areas, it forces rent to surge. High rents force low income residents to relocate from the area. This is one of the key characteristics of gentrification, the displacement of local residents. Gentrification is driven by both private investment and government policies. Gentrification is a growing concern in New York. It causes... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Nation publication writes Miguel Robles DurГЎn.....makes a convincing case that among the most useful tools are limited equity cooperatives of the kind established under New York s 1955 Limited Profit Housing Companies Act, better known as Mitchell Lama. Under these programs, households own shares in a building, but the price at which they can sell their shares is limited for a certain period of time, usually twenty years. These arrangements offer stability of ownership without the skyrocketing prices that accompany real estate speculation. There are numerous benefits of this program. Mitchell Lama Housing projects promote economic and social integration in their communities. They have become stable and burgeoning communities. The integral components in ensuring the success of this program are maintaining the quality of the cooperatives and making sure housing units over time are slowly pushed to market values. As the designated time for subsidized rent ends, the surge in rents forces some households to leave the area. However, if there was a more gradual increase in rent prices over time, then this would not be the case. Oversight of these cooperatives is pivotal to their success. State Sen. Jeff Klein said that The Mitchell Lama program, I believe, was probably the greatest housing program we ever created in New York State because it was based on a very simple premise: that various ... • 5. Igor Reznikoff s Ideas To Create The Analytical Engine Johnson refers to Lovelace and Babbage as time travelers, although he doesn t mean so literally the point he is conveying is that they were both drastically ahead of their era in a creative and innovative sense. Working together, Ada and Charles were able to combine their out of the box ambitions and systematic thought process to create the Analytical Engine. I believe it was Ada s background in mathematics and her father s work that drove her to push the boundaries of what Babbage had in mind. Ada said, the Engine might compose elaborate and scientific pieces of music of any degree of complexity or extent in reference to her vision of using the Analytical Engine for more than complex number crunching (265). It was the constant challenge the two presented one another that molded the Engine into what it became.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although he was a music ethnographer, Igor used knowledge from his field in an anthropological setting by studying the cave paintings found in France in relation to their placement and the sound produced in those areas. Reznikoff s theory is that Neanderthal communities gathered beside the images they had painted, and they chanted or sang in some kind of shamanic ritual, using the reverberations of the cave to magically widen the sound of their voices (Johnson 99). If the connections had not been made between the sound amplification in the cave and the concentrations of paintings, we would not have the same insight we do today about Neanderthal communities and incidences of cave paintings around the globe would seem ... • 6. The Iraq War Analysis In the days following September 11, 2001, Americans faced an onslaught of headlines designed to generate fear and outrage regarding the terrorist group Al Qaeda and Iraqi leader, Saddam Hussein. These fears were only heightened when President George W. Bush declared war on Iraq on March 20, 2003, with the intentions of helping Iraqis achieve a united, stable, and free country despite the tyrannical rule imposed by Saddam Hussein ( George W. Bush: Announcement ). For the next eight years, Americans lived in an era of anger and confusion regarding the intentions behind the war that dramatically changed life in the United States. The Iraq Wargreatly affected American domestic policies, causing conflict between the Executive and Legislative... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One relationship that was severely damaged was the U.S. ties to the United Nations. Before the war, only a small minority of Americans [were] ready to go to war with Iraq without UN Security Council approval, something they never provided (Kull 569). The United States deliberately defied the wishes of the United Nations in order to depose Saddam Hussein. The United States made its intentions clear when the Bush Administration announced that they would circumvent the UN if necessary to depose Saddam Hussein after being unsatisfied by Iraq s 12,000 page declaration of its weapons program that was produced in order to clarify the weapon capacity of the nation, deeming it insufficient proof that there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq (Weathers). This angered many European nations save Britain, who initially supported the US in its endeavors. Ironically, the U.S. defied the UN to enforce UN resolutions regarding the harboring of weapons of mass destruction that were put in place following the Gulf War and proposals put into effect regarding weapons inspection programs in Iraq. By doing so, however, the U.S. denigrat[ed] it as irrelevant and belittl[ed] its role in reconstruction efforts after the war (Thakur 3298). • 7. Essay About Peace In Cologeria Given the tumultuous political environment in Colombia during this period, it may come as a surprise that a third round of peace talks commenced in 1998. The FARC, having reached its peak during this time, was waging an all out insurgency against the state. The push for peace came at the behest of the citizenry rather than the state. In a strong display of unity, 10 million Colombians voted to for the Mandate of Peace in October of 1997 in a popular vote. Thus the governmentunder the Pastrana administration initiated peace negotiations amidst a brutal warwith the FARC. President Pastrana took office under the promise of implementing two initiatives: the first was to negotiate with the guerrillas and paramilitaries in an effort to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Through the public hearings, 25,000 delegates participated in presenting various proposals for peace. This process was also unique in that various international actors, including European, Latin American, and Canadian governments as well as representatives from the United Nations, participated either directly or indirectly. U.S. support for the negotiations was weakened, however, by the fact that the FARC had recently abducted and killed three American activists. This had the effect of weakening the overall peace process. Nonetheless, the third peace process had begun. The agenda for negotiation in May of 1999 included a variety of different topics, focusing on 12 main issues and 48 sub issues. These issues included: human rights, agrarian policy (the distribution of lands bought with drug money and the substitution of illicit crops), natural resources, the revision of the economic and social development model, reform of the Justice system and the state, accords on International Humanitarian Law (IHL), the redefinition of the peace time role of the armed forces, and international agreements and the democratic mechanisms legitimizing these. Efforts were made on behalf of both parties to build confidence. Among these efforts was the initiation of ceasefires during Christmas and the New Year in 1999/2000. • 8. Poetry Close Reading Poetry Close Reading The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner written by Randall Jarrell is a poem that introduces three major ideas in only five lines. These ideas are birth, death, and war. Jarrell is able to accomplish a lot in this short poem by using diction and syntax such as metaphor and figurative language. The title of the poem automatically shifts the reader s mind to expect a poem about war and death. However, after reading the title and seeing how clear it is, when taken literally, line one of the poem is very confusing. If we try to understand the poem at a basic literal level, here s what s happening: There is a gunner in the ball turret, underneath a bomber plane. Like a dream, it is gone. When the speaker woke to black flak and the nightmare fighters , he woke up to his worst nightmare, enemy fighters approaching the bomber. If we take a close look at lines three and four together, there is a stark contrast. Line three is very peaceful and serene, the words dream , life , and earth usually have positive connotations; while line four is certain death, with words like nightmare and black flak . The last line of the poem is very straightforward, and is almost prose. It tells us exactly what we need to know. When the bomber got back to the base, they cleaned the speakers remains out of the turret with a hose. If we continue the metaphor of the bomber being the mother, we can conclude that the speaker is being born into death through the womb of the State . The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner by Randall Jarrell is able to accomplish so many thing with so little lines mainly through the use of metaphor and diction. It explains the terrors of wars in gruesome detail and explains the ways in which wars, in a sense breed and birth death. To some, this poem is seen as the ultimate poem of war, and rightly ... Her most notorious song was actually not written by Reba, but was a cover of a Bobbie Gentry song. She related with the song well because she believed she also went from rags to riches ( Reba McEntire Biography ). Reba used her musical career to honor the eight members of her band that were killed in a plane crash in 1991 (Monaco). The theme song, I m a Survivor , belonged to McEntire s show Reba, and hit the charts at number three in 2001 (Branson 79). Her music is more than catchy tunes, her songs tell stories. The singer released a song titled Is There a Life Out There . As the song plays, it tells of Margaret Elizabeth, a wife, mother, and waitress ( Reba McEntire Biography ). Reba McEntire is more than just a singer, she is a philanthropist. In the late eighties, Reba helped benefit concerts for those in need. • 11. Bizzozero Staining Procedure An experiment Evaluating whether PCNA supports the classification of Bizzozero (1894) tissues tissues placed in three categories, reflecting their replicative potential. Introduction The aim of this experiment was to utilise PCNA and staining procedures to determine whether different tissue cell samples proliferate. Tissue which exhibited brown stains prove cell proliferation and mitotic divisions, this would suggest it being the in the first group of Bizzozero s grouping of tissue types. Tissue samples which showed no brown staining meant no cells had proliferated and therefore were of a different tissue type that do not regenerate while present in the body. The PCNA proteinis present during cell division/mitosis therefore, its presence suggests that cell proliferation is occurring or has occurred. An area can be stained using brown diaminobenzidine (DAB) by using an antibody that is against the PCNA protein. A primary antibody then attaches to the PCNA molecule, and a secondary antibody (horse radish peroxidase) attaches to the primary antibody. A... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When looking at what factors lead to the rise of the pictorial poster, it is clear to see that the majority of them occurred in late nineteenth century Paris and that perhaps one man, Jules ChГ©ret, can be thanked for exploiting and mastering the techniques which made these posters reach the levels of respect previously reserved for the fine arts. A daily newspaper Le courriere francias made special printings of ChГ©ret posters in a convenient size (22 x14 ) as presents to their subscribers (Abdy, 1969, p.171) However, the size of posters not only affected legibility and who could own them, it also affected the amount of tax placed upon them. • 20. Bullying Is The Job Of Parents And Schools Bullying is when you force someone to do something they do not want to, and it can cause stress or then leads to suicide in some cases. In Schoolyard Bullies by Stephanie Simon, prosecutor James Backstrom maintains school bullies should go to jail. However, I do not think bullies should go to jail, because there are different degrees of bullying. Some bullies are victims, and sending bullies to jail does not cure them. Stopping bullying is the job of parents and schools. Parents play a key role in preventing and responding to bullying. Parents should recognize the warning signs that the child is involved in bullying. Children could be being bullied, bullying others, or witnessing bullying. Although these signs could signal other issues, parents should talk to their children if they display any sort of behavioral or emotional changes. Many times children won t ask for help, so it is important to know what to look for. If the child is at immediate risk of harming himself or others, parents need to get help right away. Just sending the children who are bullies to go to jail, and doing jail time are not a good way to correct children s behaviors. I understand the rationale . . . , but incarceration is a fairly big stick, says Susan Limber, a bullying expert at Clemson University. This does not necessarily mean ensuring equality in education outcomes for all people because individual factors such as competency and ability varies among people. Students from poor families are more likely to attend schools with a worse infrastructure, less qualified teachers, less ambitious peers, and outmoded practices. Because of this, they are more likely to have lower learning outcomes. Therefore, reducing educational inequality will have positive effects on developmental outcomes. Ensuring equality in educationdelivery will also reduce discontent in countries and cities (Inequality in education: The challenge of Measurement). Early in the war, ten thousand rifles were moved to Alcatraz from the State armory, to prevent them from being used by southern sympathizers. The crew of a Confederate privateer were among the first inmates to be held within The Rock. Alcatraz s notoriety as a penitentiary overshadows its earlier, and longer use by the Army. Surprisingly, this small island once was the most powerful fort west of the Mississippi River. There was some limited modernization of the island s defenses after the Civil War. Rifled cannons were mounted. In 1854 some 450 electrically controlled underwater mines were brought to the island to protect the Bay. However, as the ships of potential enemies became more and more powerful, the defenses were increasing! ly obsolete. In 1907 Alcatraz officially ceased being a fortress and became Pacific ... • 32. The Perception Of A Social Group The ability to manipulate perception when it comes to social movements or collective action is key. Not just for those on the outside looking in, but those who are participating as well. It not only determines what a social group will do to invoke change, it will also affect how a society will agree or disagree with the change. This manipulation of perception is best defined as framing, and is more than just labeling something as good or bad. Pulling from the articles read from this week the most convincing conceptualization of the term framing was the argument that it consisted of three elements, with the first being the diagnosis of something as problematic and need for alteration, followed by a proposed solution that specifies what needs to be done, and finally a call to rational engagement in corrective action. (Snow Benford 1988) The first point highlighted the importance of contention when it comes to collective action. Problems within any given society are prevalent at all times, however, not until there is a call for a change does collective action occur. Contention rests in the need for a change, whether or not opportunity is the catalyst for contention is debatable, however the conceptualizing of framing laid out by Snow and Benford also brings into question whether or not collective action is a choice rather than a response. In the each of the three steps mentioned above there has to be a framing. There has to be a framing of a situation as problematic and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 34. Forward Facing Car Seat Safety The most exciting part of raising a child is watching them reach different milestones of their life. From sitting up, to talking and walking, to their first birthday most parents are ecstatic and dismal. No parent would ever put their child in any danger or to purposely hurt them. But by simply keep kids in a rear facing position can be 500% times safer. In 100 car accidents, 8 children will die or have serious injuries in a rear facing car seatcompared to the 40 children that will die or have serious injuries in forward facing car seats. Putting a childin a forward facing car seat, before their second birthday, that creates uninformed decisions that can cause incomplete growth, serious injuries, and death. First, the biggest problem is the myths that go along with car seats and car seat safety. CNN reports that 24% of parents will turn their children around before they reach two. One reason is the huge myth that a child has outgrown the position of a rear facing position. Most car seats have adjustable positions as the child grows, as well as, have weight and height limits printed in the car seat manual.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 37. Socrates s View On Plato s The And Aristophanes s The... Elenchus, as a famous Socratic method for education, uses dialogue and questions to approach philosophical truths. The method is presented in both Plato s the Euthyphro and Aristophanes s the Clouds. However, Socrates s personal image and characteristics, as well as the nature of his questioning differ a lot in these two works. While the Euthyphro presents a philosopher king guiding the less wise people in discovery of truths, Socratesin the Clouds has little interest in either exploring the ethical truth or helping others get out of Platos cave . Instead, he is portrayed as a sophist who corrupts people with mysterious and useless knowledge, ignores traditional Athenian education, and debilitates Athenian men. Compared to Plato s focus on Socrates s wisdom reflected in the dialogue, the Clouds is a distorted interpretation of Socrates s elenchus. Rather than justifiably criticizing Socrates, Aristophanes depicts him from a common Athenian s perspective. It is this misunderstanding of the value of Socrates s teaching by Athenian citizens that constitutes the failure of elenchus in both the Clouds and the Euthyphro. Socrates s image in the two works differ firstly in his attitude towards knowledge and towards himself. A typical statement of Socrates, both in the Euthyphro and in other Plato s works, is that he has no clear knowledge. He is different from the public because he knows that he does not know. Neither does he claim to teach or corrupt the young (Euthyphro, p.2 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Simply put one may be bashful or impotent or aggressive to the extreme of being a sex murderer. To carry his study further, Freud considered the sexuality of an individual. Through this particular study, Freud contends that one must go back to birth, which is the manifestation of an individual s sexuality. The oral phase is where life begins and that is why babies explore everything with their mouth, the center of all sensations. The following phase is the anal or sadistic anal phase where excretory functions are the center of everything. Pleasures are experienced in the anus during bowel movements. Finally these erotically tinged pleasures are experienced when the sexual organ is manipulated. Thus psychosexual development progresses from the oral through the anal to the phallic (in psychoanalytic theory phallic refers to both male and female sexual organs) stage. During the height of the phallic phase, about the ages of three to six, these libidinous forces focus on the parent of the opposite sex and lend an erotic cast to the relationship between parent and child (son/mother or daughter/father). This focus is known as the Oedipus phase for boys and the Electra phase for girls. The phallic phase is followed by a period of latency where sexual drives lay dormant until puberty when they are reawakened and individuals become more aware of the sexual roles they will play as an adult. ... The Book Thif Book Analysis Brian Percival s 2014 film adaptation of the novel, The Book Thief is set during World War II and focuses heavily on the Nazi Regime and the horrors surrounding the war. It also introduces the reader to a German perspective of the war. During World War II, the Nazi Party reigned terror over Germany and many people became victims of the cruelty of their circumstances. This is demonstrated implicitly throughout, the film of The Book Thief , however, the fear of the war still surrounds the characters in the film. Despite being a film, that presents a German view on the war, the film clearly displays the sense of fright that would be observed by a Jew during the Holocaust. The fear can also be sensed after the innocent acts of the child characters in the film. Despite the film not explicitly displaying the terror caused by the Nazis in Germany, The Book Thief still demonstrated a sense of fright amongst the characters, that would realistically be present during World War II. During World War II, the act of opposing the Nazi view could potentially result in death, however, not displaying the rituals and practices of supporting the Nazi party could also result in punishment. • 45. Symbolism In Salinger s The Catcher In The Rye Salinger dispels common binary meanings assigned by society to many concepts, displaying the spectrum of ways people can feel or react to any situation. As seen in The Catcher in the Rye, Holden often shifts between roles such as the catcher , one who guards the innocence of youth, and the caught , the embodiment of youthful purity that must be protected. Salinger uses shifts of clothing as a recurring motif to signify shifts of position and destinies (Takeuchi), emphasizing how one s role in life can be fluid, not static. Throughout his journey, Holden Caulfield, the main protagonist and narrator of Catcher in the Rye, exhibits this through clothing such as his red hunting hat. Holden claims this hat to be a people shooting hat (Catcher in the Rye), representing his role as the catcher who seeks to hunt down the purity of childhoodin other humans, not animals. Holden perceives Phoebe as perfect, constantly contrasting her the the phonies he meets. In doing so, Salinger denotes Phoebe as the ideal Holden seeks. Despite his hat denoting him as the catcher at first , Holden will at times adorn it, at others conceal it, or even transfer it to Phoebe, along with its connotative meanings. By doing this, Holden entirely diverts the traditional distinction, made by western society, between those who hunt, seek, or catch other animals, to the prey they chase, and instead shows how Holden seeks to preserve childhood innocence, yet, at times, needs the support of his sister when he is devastated. Holden s role as the catcher is constantly changing and cannot be confined to the single definition that Holden himself creates for the catcher in the rye as the person who only protects children from danger, but rather, must not be seen as an absolute. Holden himself realizes this at the climax of the books as he watches Phoebe ride the carousel and comments that if they fall off, they fall off, but it s bad if you say anything to them even though it contradicts his previous claim that he wants to stop children from failing in any way (Weesner) as the catcher in the Rye. Salinger also creates ambiguity between the roles of mature adults and innocent children through Holden, who is an adolescent that embodies ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

War Of The Roses And The War Of The Roses The War of the Roses and mainly the Battle of Towton (1461), were savagely, horrendous, and insanely bloody battles filled with thousands of deaths, deadly weaponry and overkill, that Britain had ever seen before. Fought by the Houses of Lancaster and York for control over the English throne for many years with the use of strategic planning, impressive leadership, and advanced weaponry all explain the cruel savagery of medieval warfare. Advancement in weaponry and armor was shown profusely throughout the Battle of Towtonwith the use of the suit of armor, poleaxe, Mary rose longbow and the earliest handguns. The English Men At Arms were equipped with the best armor, which composed of a suit or steal that could weigh up to sixty pounds. These soldiers would fight on foot to protect their archers and because the horses couldn t not to armored properly. The armor was very resistant to hand to hand combat, the heavy metal made for good protection, but the downfall is that it was a heavy suit to have to fight in. The poleaxe was the main used weapon at this time, consisted of an axe on one end and a sword on the other. Nevertheless, this weapon was especially gruesome for smashing and taking down their opponent in battle. Once the Yorkists had won the battle of Towton they savagely went after the fleeing Lancastrians showing no mercy, cutting any survivors down causing a bloodbath. Using the poleaxe and other swords they bloodily slashed, smashed and murdered the surviving Lancastrians, causing a deadly defeat of the Lancastrian army and a cruel but a well earned victory for the Yorkists. The Mary Rose long bow became the national weapon of England during this time. It was a long, heavy bow that weighed up to one hundred and eighty pounds, had a range of three hundred yards and if the bowman was well trained, it could shoot up to 20 arrows a minute. This weapon could penetrate most armor, but required great strength and practice to use effectively. The handguns were the newest weapon at the time so they were used at close range as they could not be shot very far, but were very deadly to the opponent that is getting shot at. He revealed himself to be the Son of God in fulfillment of Hebrew scripture, and taught that the Kingdom of God was imminent, bringing with it forgiveness and new life for all who believed. For the Amazing Grace Church, the service began with the congregation singing a number of worship songs to the Lord that lasted for about an hour. Christian praise and worship by music, and in fact, music is a great tool for helping them feel closer to God. Music is an emotional language because it effectively affects their emotions and the lyrics can swell their hearts. There is nothing bigger and greater than the grace of God that is delivered to them from condemnation through the sacrifice of his own Son. Thus, Christian chooses to praise and worship Him by singing. While singing, the congregation stands on their feet and they seem to be affected by the songs in some way as they raise their hands as a sign of accepting the Lord into their hearts. The emotion that was thrown from the congregation was very distinctive to us as we could see that the songs are an important tool of expression. According to the pastor of the Amazing Grace Church, singing let the people focus on the worship, helps them respond to God s grace and also guide them to reflect on God s glory. In his opinion, singing mean nothing if people do not respond to what they have sang and related it to God and reflect it to make them better believers. 2.2 Body Gestures As the hour long worship session was proceeding, we noticed that most of the ... Whereas extrinsic motivation focuses on external outcomes, in particular financial rewards (Psycnet.apa.org, 2017).
