Robber Barons Dbq Essay
Throughout the late 19th century, several men such as John Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, and
Cornelius Vanderbilt built empires in railroad construction, coal mining, and the oil industry. These
industrial leaders helped the economy flourish and created a leading industrial power in the world.
After a while, critics began to question their power and objective. Critics began to call them robber
barons for their selfish and corrupted techniques. While they took advantage of careless government
regulation and no income tax, they generated huge business that benefited the country. They employed
many people and provided critical goods and services. There is a small margin to justify the
characterizations of a robber baron for the leading industrialists of the late 19th century, but more as
captains of their respective industries. Industrialists and business men were philanthropists at these
times. Andrew Carnegie published an excerpt that largely influenced many wealthy entrepreneurs ...

Thomas Edison was an inspiring inventor of his time. His inventions, like the light bulb, were the
roots of entrepreneurs everywhere and sparked many industries to what they are now (Doc 2). Andrew
Carnegie was in the steel industry. Long before, steel was very expensive to manufacture thus giving
reason why no one bought it. When he found a way to manufacture steel cheaper, he knew this was
going to impact the world immensely. Now with cheaper steel, many buildings were created, thus
creating populous cities with many skyscrapers and paving the way for cities. Philanthropists made the
economy grow. Many industrialists and entrepreneurs gave money to charities so they can build vital
institutions, creating a chain of institutions (Doc 3). The industries also gave a chance for large mass
employment to Americans and immigrants, largely benefiting the economy by creating sophisticated

The Sculpture Of The Etruscan- Roman Tradition
In the early official and private portrait of the Etruscan Roman tradition, the achievement of sculpture
from the identity of the ideal Republican demonstrated motivation behind the virtus, veristic, and
gravitas qualities. The Etruscan Roman portrait sculpture of the Patrician Carrying Portrait Busts of
Two Ancestors is a life size marble statue that was dated to the period of the Emperor Augustus
somewhere at the end of the 1st century BCE or the beginning of the 1st century CE, reflecting the
practices that have originated from the past by Polybius.
This Etruscan Roman piece of art is detailed all around, but also ideal as depictions look influential
throughout the generations from the living patrician man holding the lifeless portrait busts of the two
very distinct ancestors. The surface of the marble used to carve the male figure, and the portrait heads
is very smooth and pale in colour, as the natural agent simulates realistic complexion through the
veins present within the marble creating a three dimensional illusion of meticulous naturalistic
rendition of the human anatomy engraved with relief detail all around. The function of the portrait
sculpture was to have a permanent documentation motivated by the realistic commemoration of one s
ancestors in a religious and ritualistic funeral use of death masks, that would have been cast from the
face of the deceased. This became an obvious style of presenting recognizable prestige that conveyed
the significance of

Digital Rights Management in Software
No one could argue with the statement that when one pays money for something, they expect to get
both what is advertised and also to get their money s worth out of their purchase. It seems, however, in
today s digital media industry, companies are finding ways to get more of people s money and give
them less for it. This sort of, in essence, thievery has become more and more prevalent in today s
media. One of the biggest issues is what is called Digital Rights Management, or DRM. DRM has
been implemented by many, many digital based companies to protect their products, and on a small
scale, are effective and a good way for a company to ensure their software is protected in one manner
or another. The problem comes in when companies get too overzealous in their attempts to protect
their goods to the point where it becomes inconvenient and downright annoying to those who actually
buy their products. Another major issue in contemporary media is the swaying of reviews. There are a
growing number of instances in which companies who produce either television shows, movies,
books, or videogames will pay well respected reviewers and critics to spin their reviews to be positive,
even if the reviewer does not believe that to be the case, though perhaps the most common instances
of this sort are those which involves video games. The industry is not without hope, however, as there
are those that would oppose

Earthquakes and Subduction Zones Lab

9th Grade
Periods 3 and 4 Even
Date: 2/14/13
Background Research:
This lab uses earthquake data to construct profiles of two convergent boundaries: the Tonga Trench
and the Peru Chile Trench. Where two tectonic plates converge, if one or both of the plates is an
oceanic lithosphere, a subduction zone will form. When crust is formed at a mid ocean ridge, it is hot
and buoyant meaning it has a low density. As it spreads away from the ridge and cools and contracts,
or becomes denser, it is able to sink into the hotter underlying mantle. When two oceanic plates
collide, the younger of the two plates, because it is less dense will ride over the edge of the older plate.

He took pathological gambling as diagnosed by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental
Disorders (DSM IV) as his model for the description of IAD.
Online activities which, if done in person, would normally be considered troublesome, such as
compulsive gambling or shopping, are sometimes called net compulsions. Others, such as reading or
playing computer games, are troubling only to the extent that these activities interfere with normal
life. Supporters of disorder classification often divide IAD into subtypes by activity, such as excessive,
overwhelming, or inappropriate pornography use, gaming, online social networking, blogging, email,
or Internet shopping. Opponents note that compulsive behaviors may not themselves be addictive.
Computer addiction is an idea that has been in existence for years. Since the 1970s, avid computer
programmers and hackers have been called addicts by both psychologists and the general public
(Reed, 2002, p. 135). In 1976, Weizenbaum wrote about computer programmers who could sit and
work at their computer terminals for twenty or thirty hours at a time. This behavior however, was
viewed at the time as useful to technology and society. Computers, once seen as huge government
machines that only very knowledgeable people could use, transformed into user friendly tools that
could be used by the everyday person. It became more common to see computers in homes and

The Amendment Is Not Protected Under The Freedom Of Speech...
The first amendment, of the Constitution, protects all citizens from Congress making laws that
respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the
freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the
Government for a redress of grievances. Most U.S citizens how this amendment, or at least a summary
of it, memorized. Citizens have the right to speak their mind as they sit fit, practice any religion, and
protest. However, in modern times, it is understandable to see why this is not entirely true. Court
decisions have put many restrictions on the liberties presented in the 1st amendment. A citizen cannot
use religion as an excuse for sacrifices, or protest in violent fashions. The most controversial, and
complicated, restrictions are those prohibiting certain kinds of speech. One of the Supreme is that
obscenity is not protected under the freedom of speech. A problem quickly raise was: what, exactly, is
obscenity? Under Miller v California, to be obscene a publication must, taken as whole, appeal to
prurient interest, must contain patently offensive depictions or descriptions of specified sexual
conduct, and on the whole have no serious literary, artistic, political or scientific value. It made sense
to ban specific types of speech that was, at the root, meant to be hateful or obscene. However,
Indianapolis legislator, in American Booksellers Association v. Hudnut, used

The Factors Of The Great Fog Of 1952
THE GREAT SMOG OF 1952
I. FACTS OF THE GREAT SMOG OF 1952
A thick fog engulfed London from December 5 to December 9, 1952. It mixed with black smoke
emitted from homes and factories to create a deadly smog. This smog killed approximately 12,000
people and was the catalyst for the introduction of environmental laws.
Smog was a regular occurrence in London, but the smog that formed from Friday 5 December to
Tuesday 9 December 1952 was different. On 5 December during the day, the fog was not particularly
dense. However, during the night it thickened greatly resulting in very low visibility. On the 6th
December, there was not sufficient sunlight to clear the fog. The fog proceeded to intensify its
thickness over the next few days. The fog became ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The problem comes about because both the polluter and the victim think they are justified in their
opinions and actions. As a result of this impasse, the market doesn t find a solution because no one has
the property rights to something like air or noise pollution. The role of the legal system in the Coase
Theorem is to simply decide who gets the property rights. Because bargaining is assumed to be free, it
doesn t matter who gets the property rights. If they are assigned to either the polluter or the victim, the
market will always find an efficient outcome.
IV. APPLYING COASE THEOREM TO THE GREAT SMOG OF 1952
There is a negative externality because the smog clearly causes external damage that is inflicted upon
the general public of London. The factories are not bearing the entire cost of producing their goods
because they are not paying for proper waste disposal. Factories were emitting harmful pollutants into
the atmosphere which has a negative social cost because it was making people ill and causing deaths.
The pollution (smog) is an externality, as the pollution from the factories imposed a cost on people
who may have been neither consumers nor producers of these items. This is a legitimate externality
because the property rights of air are not assigned to anyone. It would be efficient to allow the
factories to pollute if the value of operating the factory was greater than the pollution cost imposed on
the general public in

Culpable Control Model Case Study
Support for the Culpable Control Model. Prior to the advancement of the culpable control model,
Alicke (1994) conducted two studies to investigate whether extralegal dispositional information about
a defendant would influence blame attributions and judgments of causality. Defendants were
categorized as either socially attractive (i.e., a good, responsible person) or socially unattractive (i.e.,
an irresponsible, unsympathetic, reckless person). In both studies, characteristics of the defendant
influenced blame. More specifically, participants were significantly more likely to blame the socially
unattractive defendant when compared to the socially attractive defendant. Importantly, the

Although researchers have highlighted the potential application of the culpable control model in
examining juror bias (e.g., Nadelhoffer, 2006), results are limited. First, important aspects of the
model have been overlooked. Even though spontaneous evaluations are a central tenet of the culpable
control model, many studies have not measured them directly (e.g., Alicke, 1994; Alicke Zell, 2009;
Mazzocco, Alicke, Davis, 2004). Second, the generalizability of the model is restricted. According to
Alicke (2000), extralegal factors, such as social category, gender, race, or reputation, may trigger
negative spontaneous evaluations; however, researchers have primarily focused on social
attractiveness (e.g., Alicke, 1994; Alicke Zell, 2009). Finally, most of the research has been conducted
by Alicke and colleagues (e.g., Alicke, 1994; Alicke, Buckingham, Zell, Davis, 2008; Alicke Zell,
2009; Mazzocco, Alicke, Davis, 2004). The current proposal seeks to address some of these gaps in
the research and expand the culpable control model by (1) directly measuring negative spontaneous
evaluations and (2) examining weight as an extralegal factor, which has yet to be investigated within
the framework of the culpable control

Thus, in Italy the word concerto in its earliest form, was not a term only for purely instrumental music,
but rather one for mixed groups of voices and instruments together. The concerto then evolved into
something rather different than what it was first considered. It s evolution turned into something in
which both display and virtuosity soon assumed an ever increasing dominance (Anderson 13).
Emergence of the Concerto
The concerto emerged as a distinct genre in the year 1700 (Hutchings 15). However if it was in the
early beginning or towards the end of the year, historians cannot agree on. This was the year that the
concerto spread outwards from Italy into the court and church orchestras of German speaking States.
The concerto had been the first orchestral form to be composed precisely for the most popular modern
service of serious music, the orchestral concert (Hutchings 15).
Corelli
Corelli s only set of concertos was his Opus number 6. This set contained twelve concerti grossi for
strings. That work of Corelli s was published the year after his death in 1714, in the city of Amsterdam
(Anderson 4). The formal structure of Corelli s concertos is clearly and effectively organized, giving
what the French writer Marc Pincherle described as a new harmonious coherence to the various voices
of the texture (Anderson 5). The way Corelli organized his concerti

The Importance Of Language In English Language
I am interested in the overarching influence of language in human culture. My Individually Designed
Major in linguistics reflects this interest and prepares me for the application of linguistics in the field.
Linguistics is the scientific study of human language. According to the Linguistics Society of
America, such a study includes the structure of languages and the variance in language systems among
other topics (Macaulay and Syrett). My core courses emphasize the history of language, its
development, its perception, and my skills in foreign languages.
For example, by studying the history and development of a certain language in The English Language
(ENGL 346), the course prepares me for discussion and investigation of my first language. Since
English is such a popular second language, a thorough understanding of my first language is essential
to success in linguistics and in my future career path. The development of language is the classroom
was a common topic in Bilingual Education (EDUC 345), and the course discussed the application of
linguistic theories in the field of education.
For the development of my foreign language skills, I focus on two languages during my years at
Denison, so I have a diverse but comprehensive knowledge of language. German and Arabic are the
primary choices for my in depth study of language, and these two languages incorporate a knowledge
of distinct language families, i.e. Germanic and Seminitic. To support my knowledge in at least one of

The First Phase Model For Strategic Planning Essay
The first phase of Patrick Sanaghan s (2009) five phase model for strategic planning is getting
organized. The first part of this phase consists of the president putting together a planning task force
PTF. Sanaghan (2009) argues that the PTF should be co chaired by one high level faculty member, and
one senior administrator. The rest of the task force 20 30 members should be comprised of a diverse
mixture of faculty and staff, who represent a wide variety of groups on campus (Sanaghan, 2009).
Once established, Sanaghan (2009) argues that the PTF should formulate a year long schedule of
planning events and also develop a transparent, easily accessible, communication system. Next, the
PTF must partake in an engaging training session where they will learn about the strategic planning
process and collaborative meeting strategies.(Sanaghan, 2009). The second phase consists of gathering
data and engaging all stakeholders in the process. Sanaghan (2009) explains that the intended outcome
of this phase is to connect stakeholders in an engaging, interactive environment, that fosters the
development of ideas. He believes that data gathering should primarily be collected through face to
face interaction, with secondary use of surveys (Sanaghan, 2009). One way interaction can be
facilitated is through planning updates, which Sanaghan (2009) describes as an interactive discussion
process among campus stakeholders. At these updates, the present status of planning should be

Roseanne As A Deviant In A TV Show
The definition of Deviance, according to Google is the fact or state of departing from usual or
accepted standards, especially in social or sexual behavior (Google, 2016). For someone to be deviant,
they are going against what is considered normal or morally correct in their group. Hearing the word
deviant may sound like someone committed a crime, but that is not the case at all. When someone is
deviant, they are just doing what they want to do, which may go against what is normal to their social
group, family, religion, and/or other sources. In this paper I will discuss how deviance is portrayed in a
television show I watch called Roseanne. I will also discuss labeling and how individuals are labeled,
as well as who is doing the labeling.

allocated by the organization. One benefit of a virtual team is that they use technology and this can
help increase efficiency and productivity of the members. The virtual teams also assist in the
development of intellectual capital. The composition of the virtual groups helps improve quality as
well as the outcome. The other benefit is the efficiency of communication. Some of the challenges
include the distance between the members. The significant distance may dilute leadership, weaken
human relations as well as amplify dysfunction. Virtual teams are hard to manage especially when it

rely on trust that the other members will fulfill their roles since it is not possible to monitor them

Explain Three Affirmative Origins Of The American Revolution
There are three affirmative origins of the American Revolution between 1760 and 1776 that affected
American colonist. The first one was the proclamation of 1763. The second one that stands out was
the stamp act of 1765 by King George III. Finally, in 1770 the horrendous murder of colonist was
known as the Boston massacre. Parliament issued the proclamation of 1763 also known as the
proclamation line. This infuriated the colonist by restricting land movement from going west of the
Appalachian Mountains. It also created conflict with the colonist that had to give up their hoes and
farmland to move east. This restriction only allowed licensed traders to travel west and make deals
with the Indians. In 1765 King George III issued the stamp act.

2012 NFL Team Analysis
We are officially through two weeks of the 2016 NFL regular season and we are beginning to find out
which teams are good and not so good. As we head into Week 3, this is a pivotal time for some teams,
who are still winless on the season. Majority of these teams have played well one week and looked
bad the next, while others have lost by less than a less than a touchdown.
With that being, here are five teams that can t afford to lose in Week 3:
1. Buffalo Bills: The Bills begin this list as they are in trouble. Currently, they are 0 2 after going

While on offense, quarterback Andrew Luck is doing everything in his power to will the team to

Jacksonville Jaguars but lost running back Danny Woodhead to a torn ACL. With no Woodhead or
Keenan Allen, the Colts defense should not have any trouble in slowly down a Chargers offense that is
averaging 32.5 points per game.

Virtual Reality By Morton Heilig
Virtual reality is a computer generated three dimensional environment that allows interaction. This
field of digital art was originally explored and created by Morton Heilig, who thought of extending the
cinematic experience to something that would involve the human senses and enable them to interact
with it. Nevertheless, many artists contributed to the development of the virtual reality afterwards.
Scott Fisher, who was inspired by Heilig s ideas, pushed the boundaries of the virtual reality, to give
the user more control over his experience. In this essay, I will be comparing between the two artists
and their ideas, and the way they contributed to the creation and development of this form of art.

In other words, the user s body was coupled with the machine, which changed the user experience
from just sensing the elements from outside the virtual world, to existing in the virtual world and
having the ability to make changes physically.
In Fisher s earlier work Aspen Movie Map, and then in the head mounted viewer and glove, he gave
the user the ability to move and independently change their point of view and navigate through the
virtual environment, unlike Heilig s Sensorama where the user was locked in the machine and has no
control over anything.
Morton Heilig was the first to explore the concept of virtual reality, and is considered to be the father
and the creator of this field, even though his theories and ideas were not heard or given much
attention, he inspired a lot of artists and engineer who came after him. Scott Fisher, who was inspired
by Heiligs work and ideas, developed the concept of virtual reality, into virtual immersive
environments and achieved the telepresence in his work. Thanks to those people, this field of digital

Is There A, Narcissism Epidemic, Among Contemporary Young...
The issue for the last critique article is, Is there a Narcissism Epidemic among contemporary young
adults? Yes I do believe that there is a narcissism epidemic among young adults. I am a young adult as
we speak, and being a young adult I started to change, and recognize my behavioral had shift gear to a
whole another dimension, which it all started when I started my freshman year in college. Jean M.
Twenge argues that The Age of Anxiety? Birth Cohort Change in Anxiety and Neuroticism, 1952
1993. Jean M. Twenge also agreed on the issue. Her article presents the results from two meta
analyses examining self reports of anxiety and neuroticism. Jean M. Twenge finding demonstrate that
both college students and schoolchildren report increases in these characteristic. Her suggestion was
low social connectedness and environmental threats are responsible for these changes. I feel as though
this is agreeable because I think all college students come to college with anxiety and neuroticism, and
reasons because of low social connectedness, and environmental threat. Social connectedness model
focuses on social exclusion as particularly important to anxiety. When you exclude that social
connectedness, it then becomes a lack of connection in a society, may produce alienation and feeling
of loneliness and despair. Environmental threat connects the same way. Environmental threat is
basically violent crime, the nuclear war, fear of diseases such as AIDS, and the entrance of women

Giving Back To A Community Analysis
As someone who strongly believes in the value of community, giving back is the least I can do. From
an early age, I was taught that giving back to others is one of the greatest joys in life. When I was a
child, my parents and I made care packages of cooked food and fruits and vegetables and delivered
them to people who were in desperate need in a slum of Tehran. Seeing their smiles and eagerness to
reach those packages was both the best and the worst feeling of my life. I made me happy that I could
bring smiles to their faces and maybe a little bit of hope to some families, but I was saddened as I
witnessed the tragic lives of so many people. Poverty is a challenge that faces many, but it is hard to
understand why when other people have so

The Role Of Communication In The Aviation Industry
INTRODUCTION
COMMUNICATION: Communication is the process of exchanging of information and common
understanding each other. The elements of the communication process are the sender, encoding the
message, transmitting the message through a medium, receiving the message, decoding the message,
feedback, and noise. To an employer, good communication skills are essential in his working life. One
of the challenges in the workplace is learning the specific communication styles of others and how and
when to share your ideas or concerns. In all cases the problems are embedded in the complexity of the
communication process itself. In order to transfer information, both the person sending and receiving
the information must be able to formulate, listen, hear and interpret the message correctly as well as
verify the information for completeness, and at any of these stages things could go wrong.
Communication skills are important to every sector, how we give and receive information and how we
convey our ideas and messages with those around us. Communication comes in many forms: verbal
(sounds, language), oral (listening and hearing), non verbal (facial expressions, body language),
written (emails and text messages), visual (signs, symbols). How communication influence in aviation
sector? In Aviation industry, the role of communication is vital. For the exchange of some crucial and
essential information, and commands between cabin crew and Air traffic controller (ATC), there is a

Surviving Technology Essay
Surviving Technology
Computers, Internet, electronics are all apart of technology. Businesses are being buffeted by an
increasingly rapid rate of change. There are new products, new regulations new customers and new
technology in almost every industry. Part of that new technology is distance learning. More and more
of adults are taken advantage of it. It is very convient for that working adult with spouse and kids or
the adult going back to school. However some adults are not as savvy with the Internet or computer.
Both items are essential in order to become a distance learning student. Therefore I have created a
student survival guide that would be useful for a new online student.

How and where to find academic resources online
Usually where to look is sometimes just as important as how to look for information on the web. If
you find a good search engine once it does not mean it will always be the best engine to use.
Sometimes you need to check many different types of search engines. Like everything on the World
Wide Web search engines come in many different shapes, sizes and styles. Some are real, poorly
developed and some just want to find a way to throw spam at you and hope that you spend money on
their, ever so useless product. Let us start with real search engines and the different types, such as
directories, library directories, library catalogs, spider search engines, super searchers, and alternatives
to search engines.
Directories are topical lists of resources. These are usually compiled information on various topics,
usually by a set of individuals who manage the site. Depending on the management s standards, the
quality of these as in any engine can vary (Ackermann, 2005). A definite positive to using a directory
is that they usually carry less resources of higher quality, thus lessening the haystack, in order to find
the proverbial needle. Search engines, are directories, but most often; these are very large if they are
run with a program considered a spider or robot. Spider or robot programs gather document links and

Empire Of The Summer Moon Summary
S.C Gwynne writes about the history of the Comanche tribe during the United States attack on the
natives of North America in his book, Empire of the Summer Moon: Quanah Parker and the Rise and
fall of the Comanches, the Most Powerful Indian Tribe in American History. In this book he talks
about the rise and fall of Comanches under Quanah Parker who was the last free tribal leader of the
Comanches, and also goes in depth about the tribe itself and it s growth over time. He details how the
Comanches war with the white man essentially began and ended with Quanah Parker. The book talks
about multiple points of view of the 40 year war between the tribe and the American government and
its citizens, and the raid on the Parker family who had traveled ... Show more content on

As far back as the Spaniard expansion in the 1600 s the Comanches were a tribe that was actually
close to the bottom in terms of power and were bullied by other tribes. Then around the year 1625 to
1750 the Comanche tribe gained massive amounts of power due to pretty much one change in their
culture, the horse. Conquistadors who moved from Mexico up to what is now New Mexico brought
their Spanish horses with them, and when the Comanches started to fight, they took off and left their
horses behind for the Comanche s to get ahold of. Once the Comanches got ahold of Spanish horses
they became a wrecking ball in Native American culture, and became such good warriors on horses
that they have even been compared to Mongolians. As stated in the book, the Comanches were not the
first tribe to utilize horses. The tribes before them used horses in a different way, such as
transportation and food purposes. These tribes never really learned how to breed and use the horse as a
war tool and were known to still use their feet to attack enemies, yet the Comanche would do a raid on
horseback and escape on the Spaniard horse which is known for its speed. The horses were also a tool
to hustle white men in racing bets. The horses that the Comanches used were not too easy on the eyes,
and to the white man who had these European stallions, were not any test in races. So the Natives
would gamble with the white men in horse races, most of the time winning by a wide margin, and
would be known as the fastest horse and riders on the plains. Since the Comanches were also really
advanced at breeding, some of the tribes were known to have anywhere from 500 to 1000 horses per
section. They would not only use these fast horses to race but they would use them to steal other
horses which was a huge market for

Viruses Are Not Multiply In Food
Collins (1997) stated that Viruses are not true living cells and are much smaller than bacteria. Viruses
are composed of a protein coating around genetic material (DNA or RNA) and are unable to reproduce
unless they are inside a living cell. Viruses do not multiply in food. They do multiply in cells in
various organs or tissues of the body. For example, Hepatitis A virus replicates in cells of the liver. It is
quite difficult to isolate viruses on or in food. Normally, the best treatment for viral infections is
allowing time (bed rest) for each individual s functioning immune system to combat the virus Viruses
are much smaller in size. The viruses differ from bacteria are they cannot live outside without living
host human or animals. The two important viruses are Hepatitis A virus and nor viruses

The Age Of Enlightenment
The Age of Enlightenment was a movement of the 18th century that introduced ideas that strayed from
the traditional ideas of the church. In fact, some philosophers rejected Christianity, arguing that it drew
focus away from creating a better life on earth and instead promised people a false after world. Such
ideas were exemplified by philosophers such as Friedrich Schiller, who argued that thought and reason
were superior to one s senses or feelings. Likewise, many intellectual groups valued the individual
conscience and ability to reason over religious inspiration. While religion was being challenged in
Europe, across the Atlantic, the American Revolution rejected the monarch and created way for a
representative government. These ideas are prevalent in and developed in the writings of Jeremy
Bentham. Born in 1748, Bentham was an English philosophe who pushed heavily for social reform. In
1798, he helped form the Thames River Police to prevent theft on the Thames River, and in 1823, he
co founded a liberal publication titled the Westminster Review. Bentham held particularly progressive
and even radical ideas that were generally not presented by other philosophers of the Enlightenment
era. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He supported freedom of expression, arguing that it brought forth social reform. On the topic of the
Protestant Reformation, Bentham writes, It is freedom of inquiry which has corrected the errors of the

Catholic that provoked the Reformation, and the consequent simplification of faith in Protestantism.
Bentham argues that religion was transformed as a result of inquiry and questioning by the people of
the Roman Catholic church. He contrasts this more direct faith resulting from freedom of inquiry with

The Red Scare Essay examples
The First and Second Red Scare of the United States paved the way for a long standing fear of
communism and proved to be one of America s largest periods of mass hysteria. Throughout the years
authors and analysts have studied and formed expository albeit argumentative books and articles in an
attempt to further understand this period of time; the mindset held during this period however is
shown to be completely different compared to now. Major and still important was the First Red Scare
stemming from the First World War s end and America s Great Depression beginning to kick off. With
food and living expenses drastically increasing certain propaganda began to appear. Perhaps one of the
most notable of these was Lenin s Letter to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After the war however a kind of two faced attitude is quickly adopted by the United States as the
Berlin Crisis occurred and fear of espionage was suspected to be on the rise. (Fitzgerald, p. 32 33)
This marked the beginning of the Second Red Scare, a period of time held within the Cold War itself
and seen as a main cause for a very deep rooted hate towards communism that formed a bitter taste in
the mouths of the American people. In 1950 the emergence of the Second Red Scare s driving force,
Senator Joseph McCarthy, appeared and gave a speech proclaiming that America will soon be lost to
communism if the people do not stand up to combat it. He revealed that night a list of 205 people
working for Soviet Russia in the United States State Department whose intentions were to mold
America from the inside to become a socialist nation. (Fitzgerald, p. 14) It was thanks to this
newfound hysteria that began to break out thanks to McCarthy s claims that the HUAC and other like
minded organizations began to gain momentum during this time period. The HUAC (House Un
American Activities Committee) started small in the 30 s and became a much more permanent as well
as prominent after the war. Thanks to McCarthy again they gained reason to investigate many, as the
name suggests, un American activities in order to root out the Soviet collaborators. They also

A Comparison Of Sin City And Good Will Hunting
Every Film is placed in a category that is apart of formalism, Realism, and Classicism. I believe that
the movies Sin City, Troll Hunter, and Good Will Hunting all fall into one of these categories. Sin City
represents Classicism because it focuses on the storytelling; Troll Hunter represents Realism because
it focuses on the way the filmmaker is making the film and Good Will Hunting represents Formalism
because the filmmaker is drawing attention to self and the film. Even though each film is represented
in different categories, these films still have some similarities. These three films show many
similarities. Sin City focuses on three stories throughout the movie. It shows a misanthrope named
Marv, who s on a mission to seek revenge for the death of a prostitute named Goldie that he s obsessed
with. The next story about Dwight who s in love with Gail, the leader of the ladies of Sin City and
tries to protect them until he encounters trouble after entangling with Jackie Boy, a crooked cop. the
last story is about an ex cop that is at war with a pedophile who s after the teenage stripper who was

A Long History Of Sexuality Is Conditioned And Inhibited...
How we think about sexuality is conditioned and inhibited by a complicated history and, to make our
problems worse, that history is in the power of those who have necessarily been antagonistic to
women for a very long time. Males generally have been economically and socially superior to women
since they became the primary producers and possessors of private property. (Murphy Robinson,
1984: 251)
One of Western societies biggest social taboos is sex. Even more so, there is a long history of
repressed female sexuality. The years of absent representation of overtly sexual women has affected
how they think and feel about their own sexuality, and allows them to be treated as a minority despite
the gender being half the population. The first Ann Summers retail store opened in 1970, and current
CEO Jacqueline Gold introduced the Party Plan in 1981. Presently, Ann Summers does well to help
empower women, and is ultimately positive in terms of female sexulity representation and discussion.
When Jacqueline Gold was appointed CEO in 1993, she was a key figure in turning the company s
reputation around to focus on women and what they want. As constructive as this is, there are
problems to the company s marketing, specifically when looking at the Ann Summers Party Plan.
Their approach can be considered heteronormative as a result of their phallocentric homosocial
atmosphere.
When thinking about the social taboos around female sexuality, there are many reasons for people to

and reverse racism. Scout is considered a tomboy because she does not wear dresses because she can

Essay on Ap Bio Plants
1.)
Roots support photosynthesis and respiration by absorbing minerals and water and by storing organic
nutrients. They also anchor the plant. Some roots have mycorrhizae, which increase the surface area
and therefore increase the absorption. The endodermis, which is the innermost layer of cells in the root
cortex, surrounds the vascular cylinder. It is the passage of minerals from the cortex into the vascular
tissue.
The stem has a system of nodes where leaves are attached. They have a waxy coating (epidermis) that
prevents water loss. The stem and the roots are the 2 main axes in a vascular plant. Fluids are
transported between the roots and the shoots through the stem by the phloem and xylem.

They have vascular tissues for long distance transport like the xylem and phloem. Additionally there is
a way for plants to reproduce without requiring water. Another reason is secondary growth with the
vascular cambium. The stem or root will grow in diameter and will be thickened, reducing water loss
and protecting the surface more fully. The different plant tissues (dermal tissues, vascular tissue and
ground tissues) are adoptions as well.
4.)
Water flows from high water potential to low water potential. They have three routes for that: the
transmembrane route (out of one cell, across a cell wall and into another cell), the symplastic route
(via the continuum of cytosol) and the apoplastic route (via cell walls and extracellular spaces). Roots
are another way for water uptake and transport (example: mycorrhizae and endodermis). This
transport is regulated by the compartmental structure of plants. The concept of transpiration is made
possible through adhesion and cohesion.
5.)
The plant is required to be able to work at the molecular level, because (as only of many examples) it
needs sucrose. Proton pumping and the cotransport of sucrose and H+ are two of the ways for a plant
to get its required amounts of sucrose. The plant is also in need of nitrogen for its organic synthesis. It
can acquire that by nitrogen fixing bacteria that convert atmospheric N2 to nitrogenous minerals.

An example for an organ is the tuber or bulb. They

Me Before You Character Analysis
The novel Me Before You by JoJo Moyes is the story of two unlikely friends and the inspiration they
invoke in one another to live their lives fully.Through this story of courage and determination, I was
drawn to the idea of Quality of life vs Quantity of Life. Personally through this idea Moyes taught me
about the importance of our worldly experiences, the influence people we surround ourselves have on
our lives and further taught me that we can t let our bad experiences determine who we are. A key
example of the idea of quality vs quantity is by surrounding yourself with people who enrich your life
with optimism and encouragement. Moyes presented this idea to me through the blossoming
friendship between Lou and Will. Prior to meeting Lou, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Will, while his life is short, it was full of amazing memories and experiences the kind that really
enrich and define a person. Lou asks him about his life before the wheelchair and Will replies, I will
never, ever regret the things I ve done. Because most days, if you re stuck in one of these, all you have
are the places and your memory that you can go to. Through Will s view on his life previous before his
accident, Moyes showed me how in society we are so focused on living one day to another making
money, paying bills that we don t place enough importance on what really matters in life creating
memories that last far longer than anything else. Through Will s attitude I began to realise that I need
to place more importance of making the most of my life while I am able. As a whole, Society is so
economically focused, that for the majority, their life memories are not much more than they work
they did, the money they earned. As we move closer towards the end of our lives. I believe it is hugely
important to focus on quality rather than quantity as Will does as life is fragile, unpredictable. While it
may seem I have my entire life ahead of me, a freak accident at any moment could result in shortening
the time I have dramatically. While the quantity of my life may not be something I can fully control,
improving the quality is something that we all have control

  • 2. Robber Barons Dbq Essay Throughout the late 19th century, several men such as John Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, and Cornelius Vanderbilt built empires in railroad construction, coal mining, and the oil industry. These industrial leaders helped the economy flourish and created a leading industrial power in the world. After a while, critics began to question their power and objective. Critics began to call them robber barons for their selfish and corrupted techniques. While they took advantage of careless government regulation and no income tax, they generated huge business that benefited the country. They employed many people and provided critical goods and services. There is a small margin to justify the characterizations of a robber baron for the leading industrialists of the late 19th century, but more as captains of their respective industries. Industrialists and business men were philanthropists at these times. Andrew Carnegie published an excerpt that largely influenced many wealthy entrepreneurs ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thomas Edison was an inspiring inventor of his time. His inventions, like the light bulb, were the roots of entrepreneurs everywhere and sparked many industries to what they are now (Doc 2). Andrew Carnegie was in the steel industry. Long before, steel was very expensive to manufacture thus giving reason why no one bought it. When he found a way to manufacture steel cheaper, he knew this was going to impact the world immensely. Now with cheaper steel, many buildings were created, thus creating populous cities with many skyscrapers and paving the way for cities. Philanthropists made the economy grow. Many industrialists and entrepreneurs gave money to charities so they can build vital institutions, creating a chain of institutions (Doc 3). The industries also gave a chance for large mass employment to Americans and immigrants, largely benefiting the economy by creating sophisticated ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Sculpture Of The Etruscan- Roman Tradition In the early official and private portrait of the Etruscan Roman tradition, the achievement of sculpture from the identity of the ideal Republican demonstrated motivation behind the virtus, veristic, and gravitas qualities. The Etruscan Roman portrait sculpture of the Patrician Carrying Portrait Busts of Two Ancestors is a life size marble statue that was dated to the period of the Emperor Augustus somewhere at the end of the 1st century BCE or the beginning of the 1st century CE, reflecting the practices that have originated from the past by Polybius. This Etruscan Roman piece of art is detailed all around, but also ideal as depictions look influential throughout the generations from the living patrician man holding the lifeless portrait busts of the two very distinct ancestors. The surface of the marble used to carve the male figure, and the portrait heads is very smooth and pale in colour, as the natural agent simulates realistic complexion through the veins present within the marble creating a three dimensional illusion of meticulous naturalistic rendition of the human anatomy engraved with relief detail all around. The function of the portrait sculpture was to have a permanent documentation motivated by the realistic commemoration of one s ancestors in a religious and ritualistic funeral use of death masks, that would have been cast from the face of the deceased. This became an obvious style of presenting recognizable prestige that conveyed the significance of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Digital And The Digital Rights Management Jacob Barbour Thompson ENG 111 I1 11 5 15 Digital Rights Management in Software No one could argue with the statement that when one pays money for something, they expect to get both what is advertised and also to get their money s worth out of their purchase. It seems, however, in today s digital media industry, companies are finding ways to get more of people s money and give them less for it. This sort of, in essence, thievery has become more and more prevalent in today s media. One of the biggest issues is what is called Digital Rights Management, or DRM. DRM has been implemented by many, many digital based companies to protect their products, and on a small scale, are effective and a good way for a company to ensure their software is protected in one manner or another. The problem comes in when companies get too overzealous in their attempts to protect their goods to the point where it becomes inconvenient and downright annoying to those who actually buy their products. Another major issue in contemporary media is the swaying of reviews. There are a growing number of instances in which companies who produce either television shows, movies, books, or videogames will pay well respected reviewers and critics to spin their reviews to be positive, even if the reviewer does not believe that to be the case, though perhaps the most common instances of this sort are those which involves video games. The industry is not without hope, however, as there are those that would oppose ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Where two tectonic plates converge, if one or both of the plates is an oceanic lithosphere, a subduction zone will form. When crust is formed at a mid ocean ridge, it is hot and buoyant meaning it has a low density. As it spreads away from the ridge and cools and contracts, or becomes denser, it is able to sink into the hotter underlying mantle. When two oceanic plates collide, the younger of the two plates, because it is less dense will ride over the edge of the older plate. The density of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 8. Disorders (DSM IV) as his model for the description of IAD. Online activities which, if done in person, would normally be considered troublesome, such as compulsive gambling or shopping, are sometimes called net compulsions. Others, such as reading or playing computer games, are troubling only to the extent that these activities interfere with normal life. Supporters of disorder classification often divide IAD into subtypes by activity, such as excessive, overwhelming, or inappropriate pornography use, gaming, online social networking, blogging, email, or Internet shopping. Opponents note that compulsive behaviors may not themselves be addictive. Computer addiction is an idea that has been in existence for years. Since the 1970s, avid computer programmers and hackers have been called addicts by both psychologists and the general public (Reed, 2002, p. 135). In 1976, Weizenbaum wrote about computer programmers who could sit and work at their computer terminals for twenty or thirty hours at a time. This behavior however, was viewed at the time as useful to technology and society. Computers, once seen as huge government machines that only very knowledgeable people could use, transformed into user friendly tools that could be used by the everyday person. • 9. The Amendment Is Not Protected Under The Freedom Of Speech... The first amendment, of the Constitution, protects all citizens from Congress making laws that respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. Most U.S citizens how this amendment, or at least a summary of it, memorized. Citizens have the right to speak their mind as they sit fit, practice any religion, and protest. However, in modern times, it is understandable to see why this is not entirely true. Court decisions have put many restrictions on the liberties presented in the 1st amendment. A citizen cannot use religion as an excuse for sacrifices, or protest in violent fashions. The most controversial, and complicated, restrictions are those prohibiting certain kinds of speech. One of the Supreme is that obscenity is not protected under the freedom of speech. A problem quickly raise was: what, exactly, is obscenity? Under Miller v California, to be obscene a publication must, taken as whole, appeal to prurient interest, must contain patently offensive depictions or descriptions of specified sexual conduct, and on the whole have no serious literary, artistic, political or scientific value. It made sense to ban specific types of speech that was, at the root, meant to be hateful or obscene. However, Indianapolis legislator, in American Booksellers Association v. Hudnut, used ... • 10. The Factors Of The Great Fog Of 1952 THE GREAT SMOG OF 1952 I. FACTS OF THE GREAT SMOG OF 1952 A thick fog engulfed London from December 5 to December 9, 1952. It mixed with black smoke emitted from homes and factories to create a deadly smog. This smog killed approximately 12,000 people and was the catalyst for the introduction of environmental laws. Smog was a regular occurrence in London, but the smog that formed from Friday 5 December to Tuesday 9 December 1952 was different. On 5 December during the day, the fog was not particularly dense. The problem comes about because both the polluter and the victim think they are justified in their opinions and actions. As a result of this impasse, the market doesn t find a solution because no one has the property rights to something like air or noise pollution. The role of the legal system in the Coase Theorem is to simply decide who gets the property rights. Because bargaining is assumed to be free, it doesn t matter who gets the property rights. If they are assigned to either the polluter or the victim, the market will always find an efficient outcome. IV. APPLYING COASE THEOREM TO THE GREAT SMOG OF 1952 There is a negative externality because the smog clearly causes external damage that is inflicted upon the general public of London. The factories are not bearing the entire cost of producing their goods because they are not paying for proper waste disposal. Factories were emitting harmful pollutants into the atmosphere which has a negative social cost because it was making people ill and causing deaths. The pollution (smog) is an externality, as the pollution from the factories imposed a cost on people who may have been neither consumers nor producers of these items. This is a legitimate externality because the property rights of air are not assigned to anyone. Prior to the advancement of the culpable control model, Alicke (1994) conducted two studies to investigate whether extralegal dispositional information about a defendant would influence blame attributions and judgments of causality. Defendants were categorized as either socially attractive (i.e., a good, responsible person) or socially unattractive (i.e., an irresponsible, unsympathetic, reckless person). In both studies, characteristics of the defendant influenced blame. More specifically, participants were significantly more likely to blame the socially unattractive defendant when compared to the socially attractive defendant. Although researchers have highlighted the potential application of the culpable control model in examining juror bias (e.g., Nadelhoffer, 2006), results are limited. First, important aspects of the model have been overlooked. Even though spontaneous evaluations are a central tenet of the culpable control model, many studies have not measured them directly (e.g., Alicke, 1994; Alicke Zell, 2009; Mazzocco, Alicke, Davis, 2004). Second, the generalizability of the model is restricted. According to Alicke (2000), extralegal factors, such as social category, gender, race, or reputation, may trigger negative spontaneous evaluations; however, researchers have primarily focused on social attractiveness (e.g., Alicke, 1994; Alicke Zell, 2009). Finally, most of the research has been conducted by Alicke and colleagues (e.g., Alicke, 1994; Alicke, Buckingham, Zell, Davis, 2008; Alicke Zell, 2009; Mazzocco, Alicke, Davis, 2004). The current proposal seeks to address some of these gaps in the research and expand the culpable control model by (1) directly measuring negative spontaneous evaluations and (2) examining weight as an extralegal factor, which has yet to be investigated within the framework of the culpable control ... Thus, in Italy the word concerto in its earliest form, was not a term only for purely instrumental music, but rather one for mixed groups of voices and instruments together. The concerto then evolved into something rather different than what it was first considered. It s evolution turned into something in which both display and virtuosity soon assumed an ever increasing dominance (Anderson 13). Emergence of the Concerto The concerto emerged as a distinct genre in the year 1700 (Hutchings 15). However if it was in the early beginning or towards the end of the year, historians cannot agree on. This was the year that the concerto spread outwards from Italy into the court and church orchestras of German speaking States. The concerto had been the first orchestral form to be composed precisely for the most popular modern service of serious music, the orchestral concert (Hutchings 15). Corelli Corelli s only set of concertos was his Opus number 6. This set contained twelve concerti grossi for strings. That work of Corelli s was published the year after his death in 1714, in the city of Amsterdam (Anderson 4). My Individually Designed Major in linguistics reflects this interest and prepares me for the application of linguistics in the field. Linguistics is the scientific study of human language. According to the Linguistics Society of America, such a study includes the structure of languages and the variance in language systems among other topics (Macaulay and Syrett). My core courses emphasize the history of language, its development, its perception, and my skills in foreign languages. For example, by studying the history and development of a certain language in The English Language (ENGL 346), the course prepares me for discussion and investigation of my first language. Since English is such a popular second language, a thorough understanding of my first language is essential to success in linguistics and in my future career path. The development of language is the classroom was a common topic in Bilingual Education (EDUC 345), and the course discussed the application of linguistic theories in the field of education. The first part of this phase consists of the president putting together a planning task force PTF. Sanaghan (2009) argues that the PTF should be co chaired by one high level faculty member, and one senior administrator. The rest of the task force 20 30 members should be comprised of a diverse mixture of faculty and staff, who represent a wide variety of groups on campus (Sanaghan, 2009). Once established, Sanaghan (2009) argues that the PTF should formulate a year long schedule of planning events and also develop a transparent, easily accessible, communication system. Next, the PTF must partake in an engaging training session where they will learn about the strategic planning process and collaborative meeting strategies.(Sanaghan, 2009). The second phase consists of gathering data and engaging all stakeholders in the process. Sanaghan (2009) explains that the intended outcome of this phase is to connect stakeholders in an engaging, interactive environment, that fosters the development of ideas. He believes that data gathering should primarily be collected through face to face interaction, with secondary use of surveys (Sanaghan, 2009). One way interaction can be facilitated is through planning updates, which Sanaghan (2009) describes as an interactive discussion process among campus stakeholders. For someone to be deviant, they are going against what is considered normal or morally correct in their group. Hearing the word deviant may sound like someone committed a crime, but that is not the case at all. Conquistadors who moved from Mexico up to what is now New Mexico brought their Spanish horses with them, and when the Comanches started to fight, they took off and left their horses behind for the Comanche s to get ahold of. Once the Comanches got ahold of Spanish horses they became a wrecking ball in Native American culture, and became such good warriors on horses that they have even been compared to Mongolians. As stated in the book, the Comanches were not the first tribe to utilize horses. The tribes before them used horses in a different way, such as transportation and food purposes. These tribes never really learned how to breed and use the horse as a war tool and were known to still use their feet to attack enemies, yet the Comanche would do a raid on horseback and escape on the Spaniard horse which is known for its speed. • 30. The Age Of Enlightenment The Age of Enlightenment was a movement of the 18th century that introduced ideas that strayed from the traditional ideas of the church. In fact, some philosophers rejected Christianity, arguing that it drew focus away from creating a better life on earth and instead promised people a false after world. Such ideas were exemplified by philosophers such as Friedrich Schiller, who argued that thought and reason were superior to one s senses or feelings. Likewise, many intellectual groups valued the individual conscience and ability to reason over religious inspiration. While religion was being challenged in Europe, across the Atlantic, the American Revolution rejected the monarch and created way for a representative government. These ideas are prevalent in and developed in the writings of Jeremy Bentham. Born in 1748, Bentham was an English philosophe who pushed heavily for social reform. In 1798, he helped form the Thames River Police to prevent theft on the Thames River, and in 1823, he co founded a liberal publication titled the Westminster Review. Bentham held particularly progressive and even radical ideas that were generally not presented by other philosophers of the Enlightenment era. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He supported freedom of expression, arguing that it brought forth social reform. On the topic of the Protestant Reformation, Bentham writes, It is freedom of inquiry which has corrected the errors of the ages of ignorance, and brought back religion towards its true object. He refers to the corrupt Roman Catholic that provoked the Reformation, and the consequent simplification of faith in Protestantism. Bentham argues that religion was transformed as a result of inquiry and questioning by the people of the Roman Catholic church. He contrasts this more direct faith resulting from freedom of inquiry with the cause of the Thirty Years ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. The Red Scare Essay examples The First and Second Red Scare of the United States paved the way for a long standing fear of communism and proved to be one of America s largest periods of mass hysteria. Throughout the years authors and analysts have studied and formed expository albeit argumentative books and articles in an attempt to further understand this period of time; the mindset held during this period however is shown to be completely different compared to now. Major and still important was the First Red Scare stemming from the First World War s end and America s Great Depression beginning to kick off. With food and living expenses drastically increasing certain propaganda began to appear. Perhaps one of the most notable of these was Lenin s Letter to the ... After the war however a kind of two faced attitude is quickly adopted by the United States as the Berlin Crisis occurred and fear of espionage was suspected to be on the rise. (Fitzgerald, p. 32 33) This marked the beginning of the Second Red Scare, a period of time held within the Cold War itself and seen as a main cause for a very deep rooted hate towards communism that formed a bitter taste in the mouths of the American people. In 1950 the emergence of the Second Red Scare s driving force, Senator Joseph McCarthy, appeared and gave a speech proclaiming that America will soon be lost to communism if the people do not stand up to combat it. He revealed that night a list of 205 people working for Soviet Russia in the United States State Department whose intentions were to mold America from the inside to become a socialist nation. (Fitzgerald, p. 14) It was thanks to this newfound hysteria that began to break out thanks to McCarthy s claims that the HUAC and other like minded organizations began to gain momentum during this time period. The HUAC (House Un American Activities Committee) started small in the 30 s and became a much more permanent as well as prominent after the war. Thanks to McCarthy again they gained reason to investigate many, as the name suggests, un American activities in order to root out the Soviet collaborators. They also ... I believe that the movies Sin City, Troll Hunter, and Good Will Hunting all fall into one of these categories. Sin City represents Classicism because it focuses on the storytelling; Troll Hunter represents Realism because it focuses on the way the filmmaker is making the film and Good Will Hunting represents Formalism because the filmmaker is drawing attention to self and the film. Even though each film is represented in different categories, these films still have some similarities. These three films show many similarities. Sin City focuses on three stories throughout the movie. It shows a misanthrope named Marv, who s on a mission to seek revenge for the death of a prostitute named Goldie that he s obsessed with. • 33. A Long History Of Sexuality Is Conditioned And Inhibited... How we think about sexuality is conditioned and inhibited by a complicated history and, to make our problems worse, that history is in the power of those who have necessarily been antagonistic to women for a very long time. Males generally have been economically and socially superior to women since they became the primary producers and possessors of private property. (Murphy Robinson, 1984: 251) One of Western societies biggest social taboos is sex. Even more so, there is a long history of repressed female sexuality. The years of absent representation of overtly sexual women has affected how they think and feel about their own sexuality, and allows them to be treated as a minority despite the gender being half the population. The first Ann Summers retail store opened in 1970, and current CEO Jacqueline Gold introduced the Party Plan in 1981. Presently, Ann Summers does well to help empower women, and is ultimately positive in terms of female sexulity representation and discussion. When Jacqueline Gold was appointed CEO in 1993, she was a key figure in turning the company s reputation around to focus on women and what they want. As constructive as this is, there are problems to the company s marketing, specifically when looking at the Ann Summers Party Plan. Their approach can be considered heteronormative as a result of their phallocentric homosocial atmosphere. When thinking about the social taboos around female sexuality, there are many reasons for people to believe ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 36. Essay on Ap Bio Plants 1.) Roots support photosynthesis and respiration by absorbing minerals and water and by storing organic nutrients. They also anchor the plant. Some roots have mycorrhizae, which increase the surface area and therefore increase the absorption. The endodermis, which is the innermost layer of cells in the root cortex, surrounds the vascular cylinder. It is the passage of minerals from the cortex into the vascular tissue. The stem has a system of nodes where leaves are attached. They have a waxy coating (epidermis) that prevents water loss. The stem and the roots are the 2 main axes in a vascular plant. Fluids are transported between the roots and the shoots through the stem by the phloem and xylem. Leaves are the main photosynthetic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They have vascular tissues for long distance transport like the xylem and phloem. Additionally there is a way for plants to reproduce without requiring water. Another reason is secondary growth with the vascular cambium. The stem or root will grow in diameter and will be thickened, reducing water loss and protecting the surface more fully. The different plant tissues (dermal tissues, vascular tissue and ground tissues) are adoptions as well. 4.) Water flows from high water potential to low water potential. They have three routes for that: the transmembrane route (out of one cell, across a cell wall and into another cell), the symplastic route (via the continuum of cytosol) and the apoplastic route (via cell walls and extracellular spaces). Roots are another way for water uptake and transport (example: mycorrhizae and endodermis). This transport is regulated by the compartmental structure of plants. The concept of transpiration is made possible through adhesion and cohesion. 5.) The plant is required to be able to work at the molecular level, because (as only of many examples) it needs sucrose. Proton pumping and the cotransport of sucrose and H+ are two of the ways for a plant to get its required amounts of sucrose. The plant is also in need of nitrogen for its organic synthesis. It can acquire that by nitrogen fixing bacteria that convert atmospheric N2 to nitrogenous minerals. 6.) An example for an organ is the tuber or bulb. They ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 38. Me Before You Character Analysis The novel Me Before You by JoJo Moyes is the story of two unlikely friends and the inspiration they invoke in one another to live their lives fully.Through this story of courage and determination, I was drawn to the idea of Quality of life vs Quantity of Life. Personally through this idea Moyes taught me about the importance of our worldly experiences, the influence people we surround ourselves have on our lives and further taught me that we can t let our bad experiences determine who we are. A key example of the idea of quality vs quantity is by surrounding yourself with people who enrich your life with optimism and encouragement. Moyes presented this idea to me through the blossoming friendship between Lou and Will. Prior to meeting Lou, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Will, while his life is short, it was full of amazing memories and experiences the kind that really enrich and define a person. Lou asks him about his life before the wheelchair and Will replies, I will never, ever regret the things I ve done. Because most days, if you re stuck in one of these, all you have are the places and your memory that you can go to. Through Will s view on his life previous before his accident, Moyes showed me how in society we are so focused on living one day to another making money, paying bills that we don t place enough importance on what really matters in life creating memories that last far longer than anything else. Through Will s attitude I began to realise that I need to place more importance of making the most of my life while I am able. As a whole, Society is so economically focused, that for the majority, their life memories are not much more than they work they did, the money they earned. As we move closer towards the end of our lives. I believe it is hugely important to focus on quality rather than quantity as Will does as life is fragile, unpredictable. While it may seem I have my entire life ahead of me, a freak accident at any moment could result in shortening the time I have dramatically. While the quantity of my life may not be something I can fully control, improving the quality is something that we all have control ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
