Ideal Utopia Research Paper
There are two things that operate this world: order and production. The world runs smoothest when
these two things are at their maximums. Thus, an ideal utopia would include methods to facilitate
work as well as to ensure societal integrity. These goals can be reached through the adoption of
artificial intelligence, the development of a fiscal military state, and the conservation of goods,
resources, and energy. The critical issue in human societies is the lack of efficient management. This
stems from corruption, ignorance, deceit, complacency, laziness, and indifference. Confirmation bias
has the potential to wreak havoc on groups of people, because everyone knows that there is nothing
worse than being wrong. Humans are apt to make errors, and over long periods of time these errors
accumulate and compound into irreparable mistakes. Consequently, it is impossible for humans to ever
govern a utopia. Machines, however, are not prone to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Conservation seems to contradict my previous statements on the military industrial complex, but in
fact they go hand in hand. By stressing conservation, consumer demand can be artificially augmented,
thus putting a larger emphasis on production. For instance, if a ration were put on eggs and butter
(despite there being no shortage of those products), the price of those items would increase. However,
in reality, there is really a surplus of eggs and butter, which at any point could flood the market, drive
prices into the ground, and teach people a valuable lesson on why eggs and butter should not be
trusted. As a result, the illusion of a lack of resources is just as powerful as not actually having those
goods. In relation to the military, it is possible to artificially keep the demand for robots high in spite
of a surplus of fighting drones. This is necessary if production is to

The Significance of Radical Thought and Attitudes in the Civil War Period
The Civil War caused turmoil and upheaval that affected every strand of life in England. It challenged
and upturned the deeply ingrained feudal system with a Monarch as the head of all moral, spiritual and
governmental life, and moved thought and order towards new democratic ideas and systems of rule.
This period saw a new experimentation in ideas and attitudes among the population, which was not
welcomed by many. As Christopher Hill writes What was new in the 17 centaury was the idea that the
world might be permanently turned upside down . In the wake of Charles s regicide there was a

As. Michel Lynch states: It was the great issue that defined settlement , or peace in this case. One
group challenging this were the True Levellers mockingly known as Diggers: With beliefs in equality,
community and true religion for all they argued that land was a common treasury and lived in
communes detached from society. The most famous commune was on St George s Hill, where
common land was taken over by a group numbering around 50 led by Winstanly. Their ideas derived
and supported from the Bible were radical in that they directly threatened the gentry and the
landowners. As Michel Lynch states they . were regarded as an intolerable affront to established rights
of property referring to a lifestyle of sexual promiscuity, heavy drinking and frequent blaspheming ,
usurping land laws and ownership. Reactions and accusations followed that they were Drunk on the
Bible , thus dramatising many aspects of Digger practice. Just how seriously they challenged
established order was evident in violent clashes that culminated in their removal under Cromwell s
orders Lynch further poses an interesting idea that In an exact sense they were communists . He is
suggesting that here may lie the original seeds that led to later Communism. That the first statue of
Winstanly was erected in Russia after Lenin s consolidation of power shows the extent of their
influence in later history and

Renting an Apartment Is a Better Option Than Buying a House
Renting an apartment is a better option than buying a house I. Introduction
Many people may think that renting an apartment is a better option than buying a house, but there are
many things to take into consideration before deciding. If one were to know the advantages of buying
a house, one just might change his or her mind. Some people think that renting an apartment is a better
option than buying a house because they do not have to worry about the upkeep of the property or
have to pay for costly repairs; however, buying a house gives the owner extra money in his or her
pocket, the ability to modify, and stability.

If pets are included in a person s lifestyle, owning a house would be very beneficial, as many
landlords do not allow pets on their premises, or they charge an extra deposit if the tenant were to have
pets. There are many rules that come along with renting an apartment or house, whereas there are no
rules inside of ones home; however, some subdivisions may have ordinances about certain things and
that can be checked out before deciding your home s location. In one were to need an extra room, one
could simply add an addition to the house if the lot in which the house is on is large enough instead of
searching for a new place of residence. Many people enjoy landscaping and gardening; however, there
may not be any room for landscaping or gardening while renting an apartment because multiple
tenants will share a backyard. Sure homeowners are responsible for lawn care and snow removal, but
renters sometimes get stuck having to be responsible for them as well because they get tired of waiting
for the landlord to have the work done. Purchasing a home with a fixed loan gives the homeowner a
sense, as the monthly mortgage payment will remain the same during the term of the loan as long as it
is purchased at a fixed rate. Rent is not guaranteed to stay the same and is often raised yearly. When
starting a family or raising a family, it is better to have a stable residence to call home

Essay On Home Depot Failure In China
Home Depot failure in china
Introduction
Home Depot was founded in 1978 by Bernie Marcus and Arthur blank, their first two stores were
opened the following year, the idea behind the company was to offer an extensive one stop home
improvement shopping for consumers who liked to do things themselves (Authority,2016). Therefore,
their main target consumer was an individual who needed materials, tools and possibly some advice
on how to build and complete home projects (Kirn) similar to how IKEA serves their own consumers.
From their inception Home Depot has expanded into 2,200 retail stores in countries like the U.S,
Canada, Mexico, and china, with some 268 international operations being responsible for 11.9% of
their store base (Kirn). However, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Gao (2013) suggests that there is a need for marketers to develop different products or services when
consumers in a foreign culture have different needs. According Gao (2013) The Home Depot had
misjudged its target market and didn t understand its Chinese consumers. National cultures determines
business models, and regional subcultures further refine business models (Gao.2013). Gao further
goes on to argue that is important for international retailers to rearrange themselves and rebuild their
business models if they are to succeed in the Chinese market.
Firms doing business internationally must be able to leverage their global brand and adapt it to local
consumer cultures. For example, Home Depot major competitor B Q having faced a difficult start tin
the Chinese market was able to adapt to the local consumer culture(Feng,2012) They achieved this by
creating strong brand awareness by giving innovative service offerings to their consumers, they
provide their customers with full design and decorating and also adapt their services and prices across

Pet Adoption AD s
There are numerous reasons why one should make wise decision before adopting a dog. The first you
get to save a life by choosing to adopt. In the United Sates, more than two million dogs are available
to be adopted every year. One of the reason there are so many dogs up for adoption is a lot of owners
surrender their pets to the animal shelter. There are also benefits to adopting a dog from a shelter, it
helps pay for the shelter to save more dogs and to find homes for other dogs. There is also a
misconception that s animals in the shelter have something wrong with them. There is numerous
reason as to why someone would surrender a dog to the shelter, other than health problems. They also
make sure the dogs are healthy before they leave the shelter. Also, it is usually cheaper to purchase a

at American fashion model, Gigi Hadid, swinging from an anchor. Gigi is wearing a blue, frogged
blazer and black boots while effortlessly flipping her hair against the wind. The sailors are

a well known family. Companies endorse celebrities by means of using their social status to gain a
wider viewing audience. Certainly, Gigi Hadid has many fans and followers through her rise of fame
in the past few years and marketers target this fame in effort to obtain more awareness. Lastly, an
element needed in making a persuasive advertisement is conveying a sense of pleasure and pursuit of
happiness. The viewers must want to buy the product to be just like the people in the advertisement.
They want to be cool and socially accepted in the world and gain popularity like the actors in the ad,

Driving And The Driving Of Driving Essay
I ve always been fascinated with cars and being able to drive, different styles of cars and how each one
was different. I wanted to drive them all. I often found myself using the internet to try and see what
car I would have when I was able to finally drive. So many different cars from all over the world but
learning to drive never changes.
I am not a very good driver to begin with and accidents happen easily, I mean how many times have
accidents scared you? There is only one way to drive, safely and cautiously.
I remember the first time I drove, it was wise to stay indoors because I went over the curbs on the
street. My driving was equivalent to an old blind man learning to drive. Being guided didn t seem to
be the best way to learn, I needed the experience, I needed to feel the car. When it all began I started
learning with a friend, yes it may have been illegal to drive without a permit but I got more progress
done then driving with a family member. Usually everybody learns from their guardian or an elder but
in my case and maybe others, family is not the best way to go when wanting to learn to drive.
Learning with my friend was calming and comfortable, I felt less pressure instead of my mother who
would probably be screaming of terror or nervousness. The screaming only scared me more and made
me feel more pressure to do better. She constantly tried to keep her hands close to the wheel just in
case something happened . I had to only be going about 15mph before I was

Relationship Between Milk Market Participation
In this chapter, we study the relationship between the milk market participation of smallholder
households and women`s intra household bargaining power in Ethiopia. Our data show that household
income is indeed substantially higher in milk market participating households (101 versus 49 birr
daily). This higher income of participating households is almost completely earned by selling raw
milk to the market. The other way of receiving milk income processing raw milk into butter and
cottage cheese for sale at the local market is much less important in market participant households
than in non participant households.
This difference has important consequences for the distribution of income within the household. Milk
income from the formal market is received and controlled by men (who sign the contract with the milk
company), whereas income from the local market is received and controlled by women. The
consequences for the intra household distribution of income are clearly reflected in our data. In milk
market participant households, men`s milk income is on average 93 birr per day, whereas in non
participant households men do not earn income from milk on a daily bases. Women tend to earn and
control the entire dairy income in non participant households (34 birr per day), but earn only 4 birr
milk income per day in market participant households.
The central goal of the current study was to find out what the consequences of this change are for the
bargaining position of

Essay about The Slave Trade in Colonial America
The Slave Trade in Colonial America
The first blacks in the American Colonies were brought in, like many lower class whites, as
indentured servants. Most indentured servants had a contract to work without wages for a master for
four to seven years, after which they became free. Blacks brought in as slaves, however, had no right
to eventual freedom. The first black indentured servants arrived in Jamestown in the colony of
Virginia in 1619. They had been captured in Africa and were sold at auction in Jamestown. After
completing their service, some black indentured servants bought property. But racial prejudice among
white colonists forced most free blacks to remain in the lowest level of colonial ... Show more content

Many slaves in those colonies worked as skilled and unskilled labourers in factories, homes, and
shipyards and on fishing and trading ships.
During the mid 1600 s, the colonies began to pass laws called slave codes. In general, these codes
prohibited slaves from owning weapons, receiving an education, meeting one another or moving about
without the permission of their masters, and testifying against white people in court. Slaves received
harsher punishments for some crimes than white people. A master usually received less punishment
for killing a slave than for killing a free person for the same reason. Slaves on small farms probably
had more freedom than plantation slaves, and slaves in urban areas had fewer restrictions in many
cases than slaves in rural areas.
Slavery in the American South
By the early 1800 s, more than 700,000 slaves lived in the South. They accounted for about a third of
the region s people. By 1860, the slave states had about 4 million slaves. Slaves outnumbered whites
in South Carolina and made up over half the population in both Maryland and Virginia.
Slavery began to develop even deeper roots in the South after Eli Whitney of Massachusetts invented
his cotton gin in 1793. This machine removed the seeds from cotton as fast as 50 people working by

Culture differs from one location to another because of the different population in those areas. A
population is an entire group of individual persons, objects, or items from which the sample are being

brings about changes in the population. A method called participant observation can answer questions
about the culture of the population being observed. Participant observation is a qualitative research

behavior in practice. By hanging out in a community observing the population over a long period of

The Pros And Cons Of Organized Labor
Organized labor began to rise as the business tycoons and big business owners, ...took advantage of
this lawless environment to build fortunes, destroy reputations, exploit both workers and the
environment, and gouge consumers (Shi Tindall 620). Such acts by the business tycoons prompted
many workers to demand higher wages, better working hours, and safer working conditions. As the
turn of the 20th Century approached, factories started emerging, and technological innovations since,
The U.S. patents office, which had recorded only 276 inventions during the 1790 s, registered almost
250,000 new patents in the 1890 s (Shi Tindall 622). The inventions led to the advancement of
machines in factories as they reduced labor costs, lowered the production costs of certain goods, and
essentially creating a widespread mass production of goods. As most individuals began to notice,
unfairness among their workplace, they included themselves in certain labor unions including the
Knights of Labor (KOL), Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), and the American Federation of
Labor (AFL). All three groups had different beliefs: the Knights of Labor included all members
whether skilled or unskilled in their group; the AFL rejected Capitalism and focused on working
conditions as they were successful in organized labor; and lastly, the IWW strived for strong industrial
unions or Unionism.

The Emergence of a Young Girl into Womanhood
Across several different cultures, there are different ways in which people of a community recognize
the emergence of a young girl into womanhood. In the United States the most common is the famous
Sweet Sixteen which as in the name states: relates to being sixteen years old, getting a car, and having
some sort of celebration to commemorate the birthday. Among others include the Quinceanera which
is usually equated with Mexico and Bat Mitzvahs which is a Jewish girl s rite of passage. Another rite
of passage, called Kinaalda, is a puberty ceremony that holds the same importance and significance
among the Navajo tribe as their creation story. Unlike American society, during the people s lifetime
there is not a time between child and adult. In the Navajo culture it seems that it is more plausible to
say that the time between being a child and adult or as stated by Leighton and Kluckhohn (1947),
physical maturity and social maturity are more nearly coincidental. Meaning unlike the American
culture where the gap between childhood and adulthood is filled with an adolescence, and in the
Navajo tribe this gap is not prolonged and instead this transition is commemorated by a four night
ceremony. This process begins at the Navajo girl s first menstruation and is a way to announce to the
whole community that she has become a woman. In earlier marriage customs, a year or so after the
ceremony the girl would be considered ready for marriage; as a result, some felt that a girl s

A Career As A Dentist
Many children, teens and even adults suffer insecurity from having crooked teeth. In the dental field,
people who major in Orthodontics specialize in straightening their patients teeth using braces to help
them feel confident in their smiles. Even after the braces are put on their patients, dentists are required
to check up on them often to make sure they are doing what they are supposed to be doing. Another
career I will be researching is Kindergarten teaching because I enjoy being around small children and
have much patience in dealing with their problems.
Dentist always do their job indoors in a dental clinic. They are constantly in physical contact with
their patients while working on the inside of their mouths. Because of this, they are required to wear
latex gloves and glasses to protect their hands from the bacteria of the mouth and their eyes from
anything that could possibly be spat by their patients ( Dentists ). Being a dentist means one needs to

Cosmopolitan... Not the Drink! The word cosmopolitanism, derived from Greek, means that humans
are part of a global civilization. Cosmos signifies the earth, and polis means city or state. The
Enlightenment philosophers Emmanuel Kant and Baron de Montesquieu interpreted the idea slightly
differently but fundamentally agreed that it entails the communication and exchange of varied
cultures, especially through commerce. Cosmopolitism is not to be confused with legal pluralism,
discussed by Lauren Benton and Lisa Ford, which is the continuation of numerous, somewhat
independent legal structures inside one region existing simultaneously. Though they seem similar at

These two drastically different societal groups are still accountable to the same rules. Anthony Anghie,
a professor at the University of Utah, wrote in his book, Imperialism, Sovereignty and the Making of
International Law, the universal system of divine law administered by the Pope is replaced by the
universal natural law system of jus gentium whose rules may be ascertained by the use of reason
(Anghie, 325). Reason is a human characteristic, so everyone, from natives of South America to
religious Spanish Catholics can understand the universal laws. Because all people use their reason to
determine universal laws, all cultures share certain values. Grotius, a believer in universal law, argued
that God, wished human friendships to be engendered by mutual needs and resources (Grotius, 1). The
needs of humanity cannot be met in just one geographical location, so global trading is required. The
interaction of these different cultures, by means of commerce, results in the creation of the
cosmopolitan. One society may be able to harvest a certain product better than another, so mutual
respect and principles for all of humanity are required. Without it, humanity will not have access to all
of the creations of the world, and economic activity and trade would be substantially diminished. Kant

The Possiblities of Genetically Engineered Food
Genetically engineering food could be a viable possibility to ending the problem world hunger. There
are many advantages to this solution but there are also disadvantages. This paper will aim to show
both the advantages and disadvantages. I also hope to show the environmental impact that it could
have. What is genetically engineered food? Genetically engineered foods are created when genes from
plant and non plant species are modified and transferred to create a food species that has certain
desired effects such as being drought or pest resistant (Whitman, Deborah, 2000). When food is
genetically engineered in a lab the traits that are desired from the species can be obtained with great

Another threat to crop growth is herbicides, this is because it is sometimes more conventional for a
farmer to use them for weed control versus hand picking weeds (Whitman, Deborah, 2000). Through
genetic engineering, scientists can develop crops that are herbicide resistant allowing farmers to use
herbicides to kill weeds and not damage the crops they are trying to grow (Whitman, Deborah, 2000).
This not only prevents crop loss due to herbicides, but it also reduces the amount of herbicides that are
needed which benefits the environment due to less agricultural waste being generated (Whitman,
Deborah, 2000). This is also beneficial economically because the farmer has less production costs and
these savings can also be passed down to the consumer (Whitman, Deborah, 2000). Genetic
modification of food can also boost the nutritional value of food (Whitman, Deborah, 2000). In many
third world countries there is a rise in malnutrition, by boosting the nutritional value of crops this
could benefit these countries in that the people living there will have access to adequate nutrition
(Whitman, Deborah, 2000). It is also important to note that malnutrition can also be a problem in
developed countries as well, though there may be an abundance of food, the food often may lack
enough nutritional value to support optimum health (Health Worldnet, 2008). One example is rice,

to the absence of cheating, theft, and lying. It also means to be sincere, fair and loyal to others.
Overall, it can be stated that honesty is a positive characteristic and attribute of an individual that
affects other in a positive manner. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the word honesty. This paper
will also discuss different perspectives of this word. This paper will also discuss my personal opinion

Almost all religions of the world promote and encourage honesty. Since the purpose of this paper is
not to discuss this paper with regard to religious types, therefore, it is just to mention here that all
religions of the world encourage honesty in all affairs of life. If one person behaves and acts in an
honest manner, then he will ultimately be rewarded either in a direct way or some indirect way. The
individual will get benefit by adopting the characteristic of honesty.
If one person is not honest, then he may have to speak several lies throughout his life. He will have to
speak lies in order to hide other lies. As a result, the chain of lies will continue that will ultimately
result in personal as well as a religious loss for the individual. Similarly, if an individual speaks the
truth and does not lie with others, then he will be rewarded in either way. Therefore, it can be said that
the people should not lie with others.
One part of honesty means to act in a certain way towards other. However, another part of the
definition of honesty means to treat others in a way you expect others to treat you. Similarly, this
definition of honesty means to be honest with yourself. If you consider yourself in a situation while
treating other, then it is more likely to be treated in a more lively, ethical and honest

Importance Of College Education Essay
Linda Jiang Student Essay Question #1: Why is a college education important to you? 300 500 words
each
A college education is important to me because it opens my future for better opportunities within the
medical field. Currently, a pharmacist is a profession that I am the most interested in because I enjoy
chemistry, the meticulous, and well organized work that they are known for. A college education will
teach me the skills to become a pharmacist, provide me with hands on experiences in this career, and
give me ample resources to find a job in the most enjoyable career path. Even if I choose to pursue a
different career, a college education will most definitely prepare me for the career as long as I am
willing to study and work hard. In the competitive world that we live in, even a low paying job can be
difficult to procure, not to mention how scarce high paying jobs and reasonable working conditions
are. A college education makes it easier to get high paying jobs and stand out in job applications.
College graduates have an edge and a larger variety of jobs to choose from. Even if through the
college education I do not find what I enjoy doing, the professors, people I would have met, and
activities that I would have participated in, will most likely give me a larger insight on what I want to
do as a career.
In addition to opening my future to better opportunities, there are also two other reasons why a college
education is important to me. The first reason is that I

What Does Kuhn Mean By Anomaly
4. What does Kuhn mean by anomaly? Why does he say that, until something anomalous has been
assimilated by an adjustment of a theory, it is not quite a scientific fact at all? According to Kuhn, the
term anomaly refers to the recognition that nature has somehow violated the paradigm induced
expectations that govern normal science (Kuhn, 2012, p. 53). Kuhn believed that novel discoveries
began with the recognition, or awareness, that an anomaly exists, and the area related to the anomaly
is explored. Kuhn adds that an awareness of an anomaly does not confirm that there will be future
research endeavors aimed at further exploring the area surrounding the recognition of an anomaly. For
example, anomalies can be ignored, denied, or unacknowledged ... Show more content on

We learned that this occurrence is the result of individuals, within scientific communities, dedicating
their life s work to research that is deeply rooted in paradigms. Normal scientific researcher s
corresponding paradigms have essentially shaped the large majority of aspects related to their work
according to Kuhn. An anomalous finding that contradicts the convictions that dwell within
individuals that have been working from a paradigm can be alarming. These findings are especially
alarming when they cannot be made to compliment the existing paradigm that researchers from a
scientific community have been working from. As a result, anomalies are frequently ignored.
However, over time, the anomalous findings that have been ignored will accumulate. At this point,
confidence in the scientific community s existing paradigm may be shaken. Kuhn calls this kind of
occurrence a crisis. Once the point of crisis has been reach, some individuals may participate in a
search for solutions to the crisis by venturing into territory that is not encompassed by the

thyroid hormones. When this happens it affects your metabolism by slowing the process down, and
when you metabolism is slow you are extremely likely to gain weight (Pick, 2005). Unlike
Hypothyroidism, the next disease causes obesity in a completely different way. The next condition that
contributes to obesity is Cushing s disease. While this disease may not be quite as common as
hypothyroidism, it still manages to affect around fifteen million people each year. Cushing s disease is
a condition where the body is exposed to a high amount of cortisol. This syndrome can be caused in
two ways. The first way this is that the body itself produces too much cortisol ( Cushing s Syndrome,
n.d). The second way is when a person takes a corticosteroid medication (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2010).
During both ways, the excessive cortisol causes the body to shift energy in the form of fat ( Cushing s
Segment, 2010). The disease causes weight gain in the upper body, especially in the face and abdomen
regions. There will also tend to be a lot of fat deposits in the cheeks, which causes people to have the

In the short story Burn 3 by Kami Garcia, the author s created world can be identified as a dystopia

In Burn 3 , a girl named Phoenix and her sister Sky live in a post apocalyptic world in which the
ozone layer has been destroyed, leaving the surface of the Earth to be burned by the Sun s intense UV
radiation. Humans live in Domes, which are constructed environments in which there is a protective

kidnapped, and taken into the tunnels beneath the Dome to have her skin removed and sold to those
who have been burned by the Sun s rays. Through the help of one of the people living in the tunnels,

The Death of Julius Caesar, a Great Leader
Julius Caesar was a great leader of Rome. Not only did he lead a very strong army, but his people also
loved him. The debate is always should he have been killed or should he have lived and lead us to
more victories.
The first document that was used in the debate is a primary source. It s called De Vita Caesarum,
Divus Iulius. The document is a biography of Julius Caesar and his life. Suetonius wrote the
biography. Suetonius was a roman historian who wrote about the Roman Empire. It was written in 110
CE. It was written to show the side of the senators, and how they felt about having emperors. It is
trustworthy because Suetonius used eyewitnesses and other evidence from books to provide a lot of
information about Caesar. The only thing that I think is missing is the side of Caesar because he wrote
it from the perspective of the senators view. Which puts Caesar in a bad light because the senators did
not like Caesar. Considering that the article was written based off of the senators, it put Caesar in a
bad light. Meaning that this author did not want Caesar to live. Another document that was used was a
secondary source. It was an article written in the Britannica Student Encyclopedia. It was written for
the public to read and understand Julius Caesar. It was used to give a brief overview of Julius Caesar s
life. It talked about him as a person, the civil war that he was involved with, the march he lead, as well
as his reputation. The article is moderately trustworthy

The Melting Pot
The melting pot metaphor explains how societies melt together to form a common culture. This
process can be seen throughout the world even with some of the most heterogeneous societies now
becoming more homogeneous. It is very true that change is persistent in all societies and the
possibility of progression is endless, thus creating grounds for new playing fields globally. This
growing interconnectedness known as globalization shows how the world we live in is full of
innovations that bring us closer together than ever imagined before. Whether it be economically,
politically, culturally, technologically, ecologically or socially, there s no doubt globalization has
become one of the strongest forces behind cultural homogenization. Globalization brings about
opportunities such as richer societies through trade, and the sharing of knowledge and information
from people. However, scholars have challenged just how one dimensional these notions can truly be.
How can one effectively create meaning and remain an individual with such a socio political and
political economic driven world? This particular debate is outlined by three fundamentally different
paradigms of cultural difference in Pietere s text. Cultural differentialism is the idea that differences
are lasting (Piterse 2009:4), cultural convergence is the awareness of growing sameness, and cultural
hybridization is an ongoing mix of the two, ultimately creating new differences. Well known author

Slavery In The Book Of Night Women By Marlon James
The Book of Night Women Slavery is a structure which involves a vast amount of labor without

where a lot of harsh and violence took place. During slavery, both genders were faced with trial and
tribulations depending on sex. For example, women were constantly coming across sexual harassment
and abuse, while the men were tortured to death. In the book of night women, Marlon James illustrate
gender and race by depicting the superiority and the privilege that whites had over the slaves. This is
what one could imagine was happening during slavery.
In the book of night women, James uses vivid imagery to depict the gender role. You can t keep her

cunt. Then we goin kill her. Then we goin fuck her again. Or we just goin deal wid her the way massa

not have any value and what they went through during the time of slavery. Normally, women in

Biography of Mark Twain Essay
Biography of Mark Twain Twain, Mark, pseudonym of Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835 1910),
American writer and humorist, whose best work is characterized by broad, often irreverent humor or
biting social satire. Twain s writing is also known for realism of place and language, memorable
characters, and hatred of hypocrisy and oppression. Born in Florida, Missouri, Clemens moved with
his family to Hannibal, Missouri, a port on the Mississippi River, when he was four years old. There
he received a public school education. After the death of his father in 1847, Clemens was apprenticed
to two Hannibal printers, and in 1851 he began setting type for and contributing sketches to his

Hartford, Connecticut. Much of Twain s best work was written in the 1870s and 1880s in Hartford or
during the summers at Quarry Farm, near Elmira, New York. Roughing It (1872) recounts his early
adventures as a miner and journalist; The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) celebrates boyhood in a
town on the Mississippi River; A Tramp Abroad (1880) describes a walking trip through the Black
Forest of Germany and the Swiss Alps; The Prince and the Pauper (1882), a children s book, focuses
on switched identities in Tudor England; Life on the Mississippi (1883) combines an autobiographical
account of his experiences as a river pilot with a visit to the Mississippi nearly two decades after he
left it; A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur s Court (1889) satirizes oppression in feudal England (see
Feudalism). The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884), the sequel to Tom Sawyer, is considered
Twain s masterpiece. The book is the story of the title character, known as Huck, a boy who flees his
father by rafting down the Mississippi River with a runaway slave, Jim. The pair s adventures show
Huck (and the reader) the cruelty of which men and women are capable. Another theme of the novel is

The Interesting Industry of Japanese Whaling Essay
If I had one year to learn more about a topic of my choice, I would study about the Japanese whaling
industry. Although whale hunting in Japan began in the 12th century, Japan s involvement in the
whaling industry began in the 1890s. The international whaling industry functioned normally until
1925 when the League of Nations called for conservation measures in 1925. This eventually led to the
Geneva Convention for the Regulation of Whaling in 1931, which was ignored by Japan and
Germany. Instead, as whale catches diminished in coastal waters, Japanese whale hunters looked to
Antarctica. This started with the Japanese company Toyo Hogei K.K. purchasing the Norwegian ship
Antarctic, renaming it the Tonan Maru.

Japan joined the International Whaling Commission in 1951; however, Japan would later be criticized
by environmental organizations and anti whaling nations for making heavy use of Article VIII of the
International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling which states that Notwithstanding anything
contained in this Convention any Contracting Government may grant to any of its nationals a special
permit authorizing that national to kill, take and treat whales for purposes of scientific research subject
to such restrictions as to number and subject to such other conditions as the Contracting Government
thinks fit, and the killing, taking, and treating of whales in accordance with the provisions of this
Article shall be exempt from the operation of this Convention.
As the commercial viability of large competing whaling fleets was diminished due to restrictions, six
Japanese whaling companies agreed to merge into one in July 1975. The government declared support
for the new company, with Prime Minister Shintaro Abe saying, We ask that the flame of the whaling
industry will not be put out and that you do your best to secure Japan s food supplies. The government
will be doing all it can to actively support your efforts. Eventually, the company merged with the
Japan Whaling Association and Institute of Cetacean Research to create the Institute of Cetacean
Research in 1987.

Examples Of Pride In Atonement
The Price of Pride in Atonement
Joe Wright s Atonement is an Academy Award winning romantic drama released in 2007. Based on a
novel of the same name by Ian McEwan, Atonement depicts the happenings and aftermath of a single,
selfish act committed by the main character, Briony Tallis. Briony is an intriguing, masterfully crafted
character who possesses a myriad of layers and subtleties that compound into the core of her
personality; vain, proud and cowardly. In many ways, Briony is not just a character. She is a symbol,
an example of the extent of human pride and selfishness. While most movies have definite lines of
black and white and right and wrong, Atonement bleeds into shades of grey as it challenges the viewer
s interpretations and perceptions, with the paradoxical question being, Can one ever atone for a sin

and this causes her to place herself on a pedestal and jump to conclusions about what she sees. A
series of events (beginning with the fountain scene, the letter from Robert to Cecilia, the library scene
and then the forest scene) leads Briony to believe Robert is a sex maniac and therefore guilty of the
rape. In the forest scene, when Lola is raped by an unknown perpetrator, Briony coerces her cousin
into believing that Robert was the guilty one. Thinking herself infallible in her reasoning, Briony

The Rise Of Zombies On Popular Culture
Introduction
Is it possible to kill an idea when it is undead? Classic movie monsters tend to fade in and out of
popularity as audiences grow bored and move on to fresher concepts. But there is one that has risen up
and does not seem to slow down: zombies. Zombies have gone from being a small subgenre of horror
film to a staple of popular culture across various media. This paper will explore the rise of zombies in
popular culture and why it continues to remain relevant.
Origins
When picturing a zombie the image of a undead person looking for its next human meal comes to
mind. While this is the foundation of what the contemporary belief of a zombie is, the actual origin
has a far deeper and darker history than what is portrayed today. In the 17th century, Haiti; at the time
known as Saint Domingue, was colonized by France. Slaves were brought in from Africa to work on
the sugar plantations. These slaves were subject to such brutal and horrible conditions that many of
them died after a few years of service at a rate two to three times higher than any other type of
plantation (Berlin 21). A belief rose among the slaves that if they died, they would return to la guinée
(Africa) and be free but there was a catch. If they committed suicide; as many did, they would not be
allowed to return to la guinée and instead would spend eternity at the plantation as an undead slave
(Mariani).
After the Haitian revolution in 1804 brought the end to French colonization, the zombie

The Benefits Of Car Buying And Buy A Car
When deciding if it s best to lease or buy a car, there are considerations you should make based on
your personal situation. For example, the monthly payments and whether you drive the car for
business will factor into the process. These questions should help you answer the question of whether
car leasing or car buying is right for you.
How Long Will You Keep the Car?
If you want to trade in for a new car every 2 years, leasing would be the better option for you. You re
essentially paying to rent the vehicle long term before trading it in for another. A car owner who
purchased a car then turned it in within a few years wouldn t get much money for the car since it
would have depreciated significantly. The depreciation for a leased car isn t the concern of the person
who does the leasing. The monthly payments for use of the car have depreciation costs factored into it.
Are You Rough on Your Vehicles?
A driver who doesn t ding or scratch their car is a driver who should consider a leased car. If you are
constantly finding unexplained scratches or dents, you ll end up paying a lot of money for the repair of
the car. While you might be able to ignore scratches on a car you own, a leasing company will charge
you for those kinds of repairs.
What is Your Available Savings for Fees versus a Down Payment?
The upfront costs for buying a car include the massive down payment, registration and insurance fees
as well as the title costs. You ll also have to make the first payment on

selling price per unit to determine the break even point in units.

Decision Point 1:
The concept of break even stated that volume that is lower than break even point, a loss is expected.
Meanwhile, volume at higher than break even, a profit is expected[4]. Therefore, Hospital Supply, Inc.
should produce at least 1,882 units in order not to incur any losses.

Knowledge in Gilgamesh and Genesis Essay
Ancient world literature and early civilization stories turn around human s relationship with higher
beings. Ancient civilizations were extremely religious, holding the belief that their very lives were in
the hands of their almighty god or goddess. This holds true for both the people of biblical times as
well as those of the epic era. However, their stories have some differences according to cultural
variation but the main structure, idea and theme are generally found correlative. It is hard to believe
that that one work did not affect the others. The first great heroic epic poem of Gilgamesh and the Old
Testament are two cultures that are hundreds of years apart. Upon studying the book of Genesis and
the story of Gilgamesh; whereas one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Omniscient God only have the power, knowledge and control over human; to maintain that superiority
God typically responds to human behavior with what they deserve. God blesses the righteous and
punishes the evil man to remind their limitation and worship to the God.
Throughout the Book of Genesis, the idea of knowledge emerges throughout punishment. This theme
is most apparent when Adam and Eve deceive God by eating from the Tree of Knowledge of Good
and Evil. When they do this, they are immediately given the ability to discern between right and
wrong. The Bible states, The woman saw that the tree was good for food, pleasing to the eyes, and
desirable for gaining knowledge (Genesis 3:6). Promptly Adam and Eve gain knowledge and realize
their nakedness as deity punishment.
Likewise in Gilgamesh, Enkidu, was a wild man before seduced by a harlot from Uruk. After his
encounter with harlot he notices his abilities have been greatly suppressed. Enkidu was grown weak,
the narrator tells us, for wisdom was in him, and the thoughts of a man were in his heart. The woman
says to him, You are wise, Enkidu, and now you have become like a god. Why do you want to run
wild with the beasts in the hills? She tells him about strong walled Uruk and the blessed temple of
Ishtar and of Anu, of love and of heaven, and about Gilgamesh himself. (Gilgamesh page 15). This
suppression is from the gods for his acquisition of knowledge. Both Eve s nakedness and

The First Revolution By Rigoberta Menchu
Getting people to listen, to follow, to make a change, is one of the cornerstones of every history book
you can find. Not only is this a part of American history, but as we have learned the first four weeks of
this class, it is global. Does a peaceful protest truly accomplish anything? Or is force required to open
people s eyes to the revolution that is beginning? We have been, in this class, exposed to two distinctly
different tactics on how to make a change in a country, how to accomplish a goal, and how to get
people to support a cause against an injustice. The reasoning that this is a huge deal, is the fact that
both of these actions, or revolutions for the sake of this essay, were done in polar opposite ways. The
first revolution we were exposed to was a Guatemalan revolt, lead by Rigoberta Menchu. Menchu was
a Guatemalan woman who saw a need for change in her country, for reasons we will discuss further
along. Menchu led her revolution through peaceful protests, and kindness. This peaceful protesting
had positives and negatives. The second revolution was a Cuban revolt, led by, Che Guevara. Guevara
did not lead his revolution in the same was Menchu did, he was a violent man, who led a violent
protest that included numerous executions of people who did not stand up with him. This argument is
an important one because even still today protesting is happening, and understanding which ways
work well, and what ways cause more harm than good is a necessity for

Andres Acosta Biography
My father s coworker and close friend, Andres Acosta, is a production foreman for a company called
SM Energy. One of their facilities is located in Catarina, Texas, about 20 miles from his home, Carrizo
Springs, Texas. Andres is the oldest amongst his two siblings, one brother and sister. His father was
rarely in his life, so he balanced school and help raising his siblings. He provided a great father figure
to his siblings, and always watched over them. His character as a supporting person to others
developed when he was young, and stuck with him to this day, and believes it is one of the key
reasons why he is successful. He graduated Carrizo Springs High School in 2006 with Honors and the
Top 10% of his high school class. Andres later attended the University of Texas at Austin, with the

Every foreman is assigned to receive individual reports from about 180 220 oil wells, and view their
production rates. After viewing these reports, Andres compares approximate numbers that each oil
well is projected to produce financially, and compare those numbers to the recent production rates. If a
well is not functioning up to the expected progress to meet the set financial goals, it is the foreman s
job to notify the operators to fix the situation. Andres uses a total approximated income number to
examine if his whole route is producing on quota. If an oil well is significantly producing more water
than oil/natural gas, than the production service of that well should try to be optimized the best they
can because SM Energy makes money from selling fossil fuels, not water. All wells require money to
be operated, so if a well is not making much money, then it should not be worth investing in if it is not
going to make any money in

Essay on Natural Gas Fracking Risks
Natural gas is said to be one of the most popular forms of energy today. In the past, often left
undeveloped and wasted, it was once considered unusable and worthless , compared to oil. In order to
try to break our country s dependence on foreign oil supplies, we have begun to dip into our own
natural gas supply. Natural gas is found underground, and is produced when trapped gas is released
above ground. Hydraulic fracturing or fracking is a process that extracts natural gas from the ground.
As harmless as the billion dollar producing oil companies would want us to believe, environmental
groups, scientists, and average citizens have raised concerns about the negative impact of hydraulic
fracking on the environment and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As more and more natural gas locations are sprouting up so close to home, it makes sense to explore
the risks proven to be associated with fracking. Groundwater polluting of communities near natural
gas drilling sites, has been linked to fracking. At least 15 water wells in Rosebud, Alberta, have gone
bad since EnCana Corporation fracked into their aquifer in search of shale gas in 2004 (Nelson 25).
By fracking into the aquifer, the chemicals used in the process undoubtedly contaminated the drinking
water of the area. Nelson also reports of Rosebud resident, Jessica Ernst and her family s experience
with fracking. Ms. Ernst stated that Encana gas told her family that they would never fracture near her
family s aquifer. By 2005, Ms. Ernst says that her water started going bad, she was receiving horrible
burns and rashes from showering, and her dogs refused to drink the water so that is when she began to
pay attention (Nelson 25). It is a horrible thought that a person could get burnt taking a shower in their
own home or not be able to provide their pets safe water to drink. In 2006, Ernst decided to go public,
showing reporters how she could set fire to her tap water, and speaking out about the industry (Nelson
25). One gas company recently bought out the town of Dimock, Pennsylvania, for $4.1 million
because fracking made the water completely undrinkable (Nelson 26). It makes one wonder how large

Rene Robert Cavelier As A Jesuit
René Robert Cavelier was born November 21, 1643, in Rouen, France. From a young age, Cavalier
went to school to study to be a Jesuit. In 1660, at the age of 17, he enrolled in Collége Henri IV, a
Jesuit school near Angers, to further his studies. In 1663, King Louis XIV (14) declares New France
(present day Canada) a French Province, and La Salle seizes his chance. A few years later, at 22, La
Salle left his religious training in search of a valid exploit to add to his name. He sailed to New France
on behalf of the French government in 1667 and took the name of his family s estate La Salle . Upon
arrival, La Salle acquired land in Montreal, Canada and started a small but prosperous fur trading
business. He traded mostly with the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 1673, he is commissioned again to build a fort on the north shore of Lake Ontario, near the Niagara
River. The construction lasted until 1675. At the end of his contract, he built a ship he named the
Griffin to explore the Great Lakes. In 1677, La Salle won approval from the king for an expedition to
search for the origin of the Mississippi River, somewhere between Florida, Texas, and New France;
his actual intent was to trade with the Indians more directly and colonize the Illinois Valley. The
preparation for this trip lasts two years. In late 1679, the expedition set off on the Griffin s maiden
voyage with a crew of 32, La Salle, and La Salle s father. The expedition stalled on the St. Joseph
River near present day Peoria, Illinois, where plans to build new fort arise. La Salle disembarked again
on foot to Fort Frontenac to get help with building the fort ( the fort is to be named Fort Créveccoeur).
A few weeks later, he arrives at Fort Frontenac and asks the whereabouts of his ship, the Griffin. La
Salle learned that on his ship s return from Green Bay, Wisconsin, the ship and its crew stopped in
either Washington or Rock Island it and then vanished with all six remaining crew members and a
load of furs. From 1681 to 1682, La Salle planned a second trip that reached the mouth of the
Mississippi and claimed it in the name of Louis XIV. In 1683, La Salle returned to France to trick the
king into

Netherlands wanted independence in 1581 but didn t get it until 1648 (Amsterdam guide, 2003). They
lost it then in 1794 by the Austrian Throne of Habsburg (Amsterdam guide, 2003). In 1830,
Luxembourg united with Netherlands but separated in 1890 (Amsterdam guide, 2003). The Germans

Polixenes Jealousy
Furthermore, Shakespeare probably even sees vices as a beautiful work of nature, as how Polixenes
talks to Perdita about the carnations: nature is made better by no mean
But nature makes that mean: so, over that art
Which you say adds to nature, is an art
That nature makes. (4.4.104 7)
The word mean here might possess double meanings it might not only refer to the method that nature
teaches man to plant and graft, but the word mean might also suggest the base quality of man s
meanness and inferiority. Here Polixenes speak of the beauty of grafting flowers, yet on a broader
view, Shakespeare might also suggest the significance to accept negative qualities, such as
melancholy, jealousy, and even foolishness, as natural and beautiful. For ... Show more content on

Even Time accuses Leontes, The effects of his fond jealousies so grieving/ That he shuts up himself
(4.1.18 9). The rejection of any possibility to change is a greater evil than the evil itself. On the one
hand, if the committer of a crime forever repents, he can no longer taste happiness. Ever since Leontes
admits it is his shame perpetual, and swears, Once a day I ll visit/ The chapel where they lie, and tears
shed there/ Shall be my recreation, his joy stops for more than a decade (3.2.255 8). He would still
regret at the sight of Florizel, I lost a couple (5.1.16). Hence, he looks only back on objects dead. On
the other hand, if the victim does not forgive, he can share no joy, either. After Paulina condemns
Leonte, A thousand knees.../ Upon a barren mountain and still winter/ In storm perpetual, could not
move the gods/ To look that way thou wert, she not only loses her husband, but also laments with
criminal in the same manner (3.2.224 8). In the above two quotes, the word perpetual appears twice
both of them cannot forgive, so they deny the possibility of all. Because of this, their vows are against
nature and time, as there is no such thing as perpetual in a world with Time. As a result, they lead to
their own mishaps it is even probable that they own belief in the oracle has realized the torturing

Character Analysis Of Ready Player One By Ernest Cline
In the book Ready Player One by Ernest Cline, the main character, Wade, changes throughout the
book. This is due to the experiences with trying to get the answer to the puzzles with some of these
being his living quarters and then getting thrown into jail.
In the beginning of the book, Wade is a more selfish type of person and he has to fend for himself due
to his background and home life. At the start, he came from a poor family so he had to be resourceful.
He showed us that he ...was curled up in an old sleeping bag in the corner of the trailer s tiny laundry
room, wedged into the gap between the wall and the dryer (Cline 13). The main character, Wade, was
forced to sleep in the laundry room due to how overcrowdedness of the stack he was in. Even though
he had a large amount of his family living in the same small apartment with him, he was still able to
make room for himself. He made a small spot for himself to be comfortable in. This sets up how many
people are in that small area and adds to the loss that will come later in the story and that will play a
part in changing him. He also was a very determined person. He was sometimes obsessive with the
ways he studied the life of Halliday. He states that For the past five years, I d devoted all my free time
to learning as much as I possibly could about James Halliday (Cline 52). Wade was obsessed with the
hunt and spent a large part of a long while studying everything that the creator of the OASIS had
loved in his life.

  • 2. Ideal Utopia Research Paper There are two things that operate this world: order and production. The world runs smoothest when these two things are at their maximums. Thus, an ideal utopia would include methods to facilitate work as well as to ensure societal integrity. These goals can be reached through the adoption of artificial intelligence, the development of a fiscal military state, and the conservation of goods, resources, and energy. The critical issue in human societies is the lack of efficient management. This stems from corruption, ignorance, deceit, complacency, laziness, and indifference. Confirmation bias has the potential to wreak havoc on groups of people, because everyone knows that there is nothing worse than being wrong. Humans are apt to make errors, and over long periods of time these errors accumulate and compound into irreparable mistakes. Consequently, it is impossible for humans to ever govern a utopia. Machines, however, are not prone to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Conservation seems to contradict my previous statements on the military industrial complex, but in fact they go hand in hand. By stressing conservation, consumer demand can be artificially augmented, thus putting a larger emphasis on production. For instance, if a ration were put on eggs and butter (despite there being no shortage of those products), the price of those items would increase. However, in reality, there is really a surplus of eggs and butter, which at any point could flood the market, drive prices into the ground, and teach people a valuable lesson on why eggs and butter should not be trusted. As a result, the illusion of a lack of resources is just as powerful as not actually having those goods. In relation to the military, it is possible to artificially keep the demand for robots high in spite of a surplus of fighting drones. This is necessary if production is to ... The Significance of Radical Thought and Attitudes in the Civil War Period The Civil War caused turmoil and upheaval that affected every strand of life in England. It challenged and upturned the deeply ingrained feudal system with a Monarch as the head of all moral, spiritual and governmental life, and moved thought and order towards new democratic ideas and systems of rule. This period saw a new experimentation in ideas and attitudes among the population, which was not welcomed by many. As Christopher Hill writes What was new in the 17 centaury was the idea that the world might be permanently turned upside down . Michel Lynch states: It was the great issue that defined settlement , or peace in this case. One group challenging this were the True Levellers mockingly known as Diggers: With beliefs in equality, community and true religion for all they argued that land was a common treasury and lived in communes detached from society. The most famous commune was on St George s Hill, where common land was taken over by a group numbering around 50 led by Winstanly. Their ideas derived and supported from the Bible were radical in that they directly threatened the gentry and the landowners. As Michel Lynch states they . were regarded as an intolerable affront to established rights of property referring to a lifestyle of sexual promiscuity, heavy drinking and frequent blaspheming , usurping land laws and ownership. Reactions and accusations followed that they were Drunk on the Bible , thus dramatising many aspects of Digger practice. Just how seriously they challenged established order was evident in violent clashes that culminated in their removal under Cromwell s orders Lynch further poses an interesting idea that In an exact sense they were communists . He is suggesting that here may lie the original seeds that led to later Communism. That the first statue of Winstanly was erected in Russia after Lenin s consolidation of power shows the extent of their influence in later history and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In one were to need an extra room, one could simply add an addition to the house if the lot in which the house is on is large enough instead of searching for a new place of residence. Many people enjoy landscaping and gardening; however, there may not be any room for landscaping or gardening while renting an apartment because multiple tenants will share a backyard. Sure homeowners are responsible for lawn care and snow removal, but renters sometimes get stuck having to be responsible for them as well because they get tired of waiting for the landlord to have the work done. Purchasing a home with a fixed loan gives the homeowner a sense, as the monthly mortgage payment will remain the same during the term of the loan as long as it is purchased at a fixed rate. Rent is not guaranteed to stay the same and is often raised yearly. When starting a family or raising a family, it is better to have a stable residence to call home ... • 9. Driving And The Driving Of Driving Essay I ve always been fascinated with cars and being able to drive, different styles of cars and how each one was different. I wanted to drive them all. I often found myself using the internet to try and see what car I would have when I was able to finally drive. So many different cars from all over the world but learning to drive never changes. I am not a very good driver to begin with and accidents happen easily, I mean how many times have accidents scared you? There is only one way to drive, safely and cautiously. I remember the first time I drove, it was wise to stay indoors because I went over the curbs on the street. My driving was equivalent to an old blind man learning to drive. Being guided didn t seem to be the best way to learn, I needed the experience, I needed to feel the car. When it all began I started learning with a friend, yes it may have been illegal to drive without a permit but I got more progress done then driving with a family member. Usually everybody learns from their guardian or an elder but in my case and maybe others, family is not the best way to go when wanting to learn to drive. Learning with my friend was calming and comfortable, I felt less pressure instead of my mother who would probably be screaming of terror or nervousness. The screaming only scared me more and made me feel more pressure to do better. She constantly tried to keep her hands close to the wheel just in case something happened . • 10. Relationship Between Milk Market Participation In this chapter, we study the relationship between the milk market participation of smallholder households and women`s intra household bargaining power in Ethiopia. Our data show that household income is indeed substantially higher in milk market participating households (101 versus 49 birr daily). This higher income of participating households is almost completely earned by selling raw milk to the market. The other way of receiving milk income processing raw milk into butter and cottage cheese for sale at the local market is much less important in market participant households than in non participant households. This difference has important consequences for the distribution of income within the household. Milk income from the formal market is received and controlled by men (who sign the contract with the milk company), whereas income from the local market is received and controlled by women. The consequences for the intra household distribution of income are clearly reflected in our data. In milk market participant households, men`s milk income is on average 93 birr per day, whereas in non participant households men do not earn income from milk on a daily bases. Women tend to earn and control the entire dairy income in non participant households (34 birr per day), but earn only 4 birr milk income per day in market participant households. The central goal of the current study was to find out what the consequences of this change are for the bargaining position of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Most indentured servants had a contract to work without wages for a master for four to seven years, after which they became free. Blacks brought in as slaves, however, had no right to eventual freedom. The first black indentured servants arrived in Jamestown in the colony of Virginia in 1619. They had been captured in Africa and were sold at auction in Jamestown. After completing their service, some black indentured servants bought property. Many slaves in those colonies worked as skilled and unskilled labourers in factories, homes, and shipyards and on fishing and trading ships. During the mid 1600 s, the colonies began to pass laws called slave codes. In general, these codes prohibited slaves from owning weapons, receiving an education, meeting one another or moving about without the permission of their masters, and testifying against white people in court. Slaves received harsher punishments for some crimes than white people. A master usually received less punishment for killing a slave than for killing a free person for the same reason. Slaves on small farms probably had more freedom than plantation slaves, and slaves in urban areas had fewer restrictions in many cases than slaves in rural areas. Slavery in the American South By the early 1800 s, more than 700,000 slaves lived in the South. They accounted for about a third of the region s people. By 1860, the slave states had about 4 million slaves. Slaves outnumbered whites in South Carolina and made up over half the population in both Maryland and Virginia. The Pros And Cons Of Organized Labor Organized labor began to rise as the business tycoons and big business owners, ...took advantage of this lawless environment to build fortunes, destroy reputations, exploit both workers and the environment, and gouge consumers (Shi Tindall 620). Such acts by the business tycoons prompted many workers to demand higher wages, better working hours, and safer working conditions. As the turn of the 20th Century approached, factories started emerging, and technological innovations since, The U.S. patents office, which had recorded only 276 inventions during the 1790 s, registered almost 250,000 new patents in the 1890 s (Shi Tindall 622). The inventions led to the advancement of machines in factories as they reduced labor costs, lowered the production costs of certain goods, and essentially creating a widespread mass production of goods. • 16. The Emergence of a Young Girl into Womanhood Across several different cultures, there are different ways in which people of a community recognize the emergence of a young girl into womanhood. In the United States the most common is the famous Sweet Sixteen which as in the name states: relates to being sixteen years old, getting a car, and having some sort of celebration to commemorate the birthday. Among others include the Quinceanera which is usually equated with Mexico and Bat Mitzvahs which is a Jewish girl s rite of passage. Another rite of passage, called Kinaalda, is a puberty ceremony that holds the same importance and significance among the Navajo tribe as their creation story. Unlike American society, during the people s lifetime there is not a time between child and adult. In the Navajo culture it seems that it is more plausible to say that the time between being a child and adult or as stated by Leighton and Kluckhohn (1947), physical maturity and social maturity are more nearly coincidental. Meaning unlike the American culture where the gap between childhood and adulthood is filled with an adolescence, and in the Navajo tribe this gap is not prolonged and instead this transition is commemorated by a four night ceremony. This process begins at the Navajo girl s first menstruation and is a way to announce to the whole community that she has become a woman. In earlier marriage customs, a year or so after the ceremony the girl would be considered ready for marriage; as a result, some felt that a girl s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Cosmos signifies the earth, and polis means city or state. The Enlightenment philosophers Emmanuel Kant and Baron de Montesquieu interpreted the idea slightly differently but fundamentally agreed that it entails the communication and exchange of varied cultures, especially through commerce. Cosmopolitism is not to be confused with legal pluralism, discussed by Lauren Benton and Lisa Ford, which is the continuation of numerous, somewhat independent legal structures inside one region existing simultaneously. Genetically engineered foods are created when genes from plant and non plant species are modified and transferred to create a food species that has certain desired effects such as being drought or pest resistant (Whitman, Deborah, 2000). Another threat to crop growth is herbicides, this is because it is sometimes more conventional for a farmer to use them for weed control versus hand picking weeds (Whitman, Deborah, 2000). Through genetic engineering, scientists can develop crops that are herbicide resistant allowing farmers to use herbicides to kill weeds and not damage the crops they are trying to grow (Whitman, Deborah, 2000). This not only prevents crop loss due to herbicides, but it also reduces the amount of herbicides that are needed which benefits the environment due to less agricultural waste being generated (Whitman, Deborah, 2000). This is also beneficial economically because the farmer has less production costs and these savings can also be passed down to the consumer (Whitman, Deborah, 2000). Genetic modification of food can also boost the nutritional value of food (Whitman, Deborah, 2000). In many third world countries there is a rise in malnutrition, by boosting the nutritional value of crops this could benefit these countries in that the people living there will have access to adequate nutrition (Whitman, Deborah, 2000). It is also important to note that malnutrition can also be a problem in developed countries as well, though there may be an abundance of food, the food often may lack enough nutritional value to support optimum health (Health Worldnet, 2008). A college education will teach me the skills to become a pharmacist, provide me with hands on experiences in this career, and give me ample resources to find a job in the most enjoyable career path. • 23. What Does Kuhn Mean By Anomaly 4. What does Kuhn mean by anomaly? Why does he say that, until something anomalous has been assimilated by an adjustment of a theory, it is not quite a scientific fact at all? According to Kuhn, the term anomaly refers to the recognition that nature has somehow violated the paradigm induced expectations that govern normal science (Kuhn, 2012, p. 53). Kuhn believed that novel discoveries began with the recognition, or awareness, that an anomaly exists, and the area related to the anomaly is explored. The debate is always should he have been killed or should he have lived and lead us to more victories. The first document that was used in the debate is a primary source. It s called De Vita Caesarum, Divus Iulius. The document is a biography of Julius Caesar and his life. Suetonius wrote the biography. Suetonius was a roman historian who wrote about the Roman Empire. It was written in 110 CE. It was written to show the side of the senators, and how they felt about having emperors. It is trustworthy because Suetonius used eyewitnesses and other evidence from books to provide a lot of information about Caesar. The only thing that I think is missing is the side of Caesar because he wrote it from the perspective of the senators view. Which puts Caesar in a bad light because the senators did not like Caesar. Considering that the article was written based off of the senators, it put Caesar in a bad light. Meaning that this author did not want Caesar to live. Another document that was used was a secondary source. It was an article written in the Britannica Student Encyclopedia. It was written for the public to read and understand Julius Caesar. This process can be seen throughout the world even with some of the most heterogeneous societies now becoming more homogeneous. It is very true that change is persistent in all societies and the possibility of progression is endless, thus creating grounds for new playing fields globally. This growing interconnectedness known as globalization shows how the world we live in is full of innovations that bring us closer together than ever imagined before. Whether it be economically, politically, culturally, technologically, ecologically or socially, there s no doubt globalization has become one of the strongest forces behind cultural homogenization. Globalization brings about opportunities such as richer societies through trade, and the sharing of knowledge and information from people. However, scholars have challenged just how one dimensional these notions can truly be. How can one effectively create meaning and remain an individual with such a socio political and political economic driven world? This particular debate is outlined by three fundamentally different paradigms of cultural difference in Pietere s text. Cultural differentialism is the idea that differences are lasting (Piterse 2009:4), cultural convergence is the awareness of growing sameness, and cultural hybridization is an ongoing mix of the two, ultimately creating new differences. The government declared support for the new company, with Prime Minister Shintaro Abe saying, We ask that the flame of the whaling industry will not be put out and that you do your best to secure Japan s food supplies. The government will be doing all it can to actively support your efforts. Eventually, the company merged with the Japan Whaling Association and Institute of Cetacean Research to create the Institute of Cetacean Research in 1987. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Examples Of Pride In Atonement The Price of Pride in Atonement Joe Wright s Atonement is an Academy Award winning romantic drama released in 2007. Based on a novel of the same name by Ian McEwan, Atonement depicts the happenings and aftermath of a single, selfish act committed by the main character, Briony Tallis. Briony is an intriguing, masterfully crafted character who possesses a myriad of layers and subtleties that compound into the core of her personality; vain, proud and cowardly. In many ways, Briony is not just a character. She is a symbol, an example of the extent of human pride and selfishness. While most movies have definite lines of black and white and right and wrong, Atonement bleeds into shades of grey as it challenges the viewer s interpretations and perceptions, with the paradoxical question being, Can one ever atone for a sin that destroyed somebody s ... This is shown in the fountain scene, and again in the library scene, and is in part to show how Briony s imagination and interpretation can run wild and how pridefully stubborn Briony is about her understanding of things. A series of events (beginning with the fountain scene, the letter from Robert to Cecilia, the library scene and then the forest scene) leads Briony to believe Robert is a sex maniac and therefore guilty of the rape. In the forest scene, when Lola is raped by an unknown perpetrator, Briony coerces her cousin into believing that Robert was the guilty one. Thinking herself infallible in her reasoning, Briony adamantly accuses Robert of the crime. • 40. The Rise Of Zombies On Popular Culture Introduction Is it possible to kill an idea when it is undead? Classic movie monsters tend to fade in and out of popularity as audiences grow bored and move on to fresher concepts. But there is one that has risen up and does not seem to slow down: zombies. Zombies have gone from being a small subgenre of horror film to a staple of popular culture across various media. This paper will explore the rise of zombies in popular culture and why it continues to remain relevant. Origins When picturing a zombie the image of a undead person looking for its next human meal comes to mind. While this is the foundation of what the contemporary belief of a zombie is, the actual origin has a far deeper and darker history than what is portrayed today. In the 17th century, Haiti; at the time known as Saint Domingue, was colonized by France. Slaves were brought in from Africa to work on the sugar plantations. These slaves were subject to such brutal and horrible conditions that many of them died after a few years of service at a rate two to three times higher than any other type of plantation (Berlin 21). A belief rose among the slaves that if they died, they would return to la guinée (Africa) and be free but there was a catch. If they committed suicide; as many did, they would not be allowed to return to la guinée and instead would spend eternity at the plantation as an undead slave (Mariani). After the Haitian revolution in 1804 brought the end to French colonization, the zombie ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 42. The Benefits Of Car Buying And Buy A Car When deciding if it s best to lease or buy a car, there are considerations you should make based on your personal situation. For example, the monthly payments and whether you drive the car for business will factor into the process. These questions should help you answer the question of whether car leasing or car buying is right for you. How Long Will You Keep the Car? If you want to trade in for a new car every 2 years, leasing would be the better option for you. You re essentially paying to rent the vehicle long term before trading it in for another. A car owner who purchased a car then turned it in within a few years wouldn t get much money for the car since it would have depreciated significantly. The depreciation for a leased car isn t the concern of the person who does the leasing. The monthly payments for use of the car have depreciation costs factored into it. Are You Rough on Your Vehicles? A driver who doesn t ding or scratch their car is a driver who should consider a leased car. If you are constantly finding unexplained scratches or dents, you ll end up paying a lot of money for the repair of the car. While you might be able to ignore scratches on a car you own, a leasing company will charge you for those kinds of repairs. What is Your Available Savings for Fees versus a Down Payment? Ancient civilizations were extremely religious, holding the belief that their very lives were in the hands of their almighty god or goddess. This holds true for both the people of biblical times as well as those of the epic era. However, their stories have some differences according to cultural variation but the main structure, idea and theme are generally found correlative. Omniscient God only have the power, knowledge and control over human; to maintain that superiority God typically responds to human behavior with what they deserve. God blesses the righteous and punishes the evil man to remind their limitation and worship to the God. Throughout the Book of Genesis, the idea of knowledge emerges throughout punishment. This theme is most apparent when Adam and Eve deceive God by eating from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. When they do this, they are immediately given the ability to discern between right and wrong. The Bible states, The woman saw that the tree was good for food, pleasing to the eyes, and desirable for gaining knowledge (Genesis 3:6). Promptly Adam and Eve gain knowledge and realize their nakedness as deity punishment. Likewise in Gilgamesh, Enkidu, was a wild man before seduced by a harlot from Uruk. After his encounter with harlot he notices his abilities have been greatly suppressed. Enkidu was grown weak, the narrator tells us, for wisdom was in him, and the thoughts of a man were in his heart. The woman says to him, You are wise, Enkidu, and now you have become like a god. • 45. The First Revolution By Rigoberta Menchu Getting people to listen, to follow, to make a change, is one of the cornerstones of every history book you can find. Not only is this a part of American history, but as we have learned the first four weeks of this class, it is global. Does a peaceful protest truly accomplish anything? Or is force required to open people s eyes to the revolution that is beginning? We have been, in this class, exposed to two distinctly different tactics on how to make a change in a country, how to accomplish a goal, and how to get people to support a cause against an injustice. The reasoning that this is a huge deal, is the fact that both of these actions, or revolutions for the sake of this essay, were done in polar opposite ways. The first revolution we were exposed to was a Guatemalan revolt, lead by Rigoberta Menchu. Menchu was a Guatemalan woman who saw a need for change in her country, for reasons we will discuss further along. Menchu led her revolution through peaceful protests, and kindness. This peaceful protesting had positives and negatives. The second revolution was a Cuban revolt, led by, Che Guevara. Guevara did not lead his revolution in the same was Menchu did, he was a violent man, who led a violent protest that included numerous executions of people who did not stand up with him. This argument is an important one because even still today protesting is happening, and understanding which ways work well, and what ways cause more harm than good is a necessity for ... In the past, often left undeveloped and wasted, it was once considered unusable and worthless , compared to oil. Natural gas is found underground, and is produced when trapped gas is released above ground. Hydraulic fracturing or fracking is a process that extracts natural gas from the ground. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As more and more natural gas locations are sprouting up so close to home, it makes sense to explore the risks proven to be associated with fracking. Groundwater polluting of communities near natural gas drilling sites, has been linked to fracking. At least 15 water wells in Rosebud, Alberta, have gone bad since EnCana Corporation fracked into their aquifer in search of shale gas in 2004 (Nelson 25). By fracking into the aquifer, the chemicals used in the process undoubtedly contaminated the drinking water of the area. Nelson also reports of Rosebud resident, Jessica Ernst and her family s experience with fracking. Ms. Ernst stated that Encana gas told her family that they would never fracture near her family s aquifer. By 2005, Ms. Ernst says that her water started going bad, she was receiving horrible burns and rashes from showering, and her dogs refused to drink the water so that is when she began to pay attention (Nelson 25). It is a horrible thought that a person could get burnt taking a shower in their own home or not be able to provide their pets safe water to drink. In 2006, Ernst decided to go public, showing reporters how she could set fire to her tap water, and speaking out about the industry (Nelson 25). This is due to the experiences with trying to get the answer to the puzzles with some of these being his living quarters and then getting thrown into jail. In the beginning of the book, Wade is a more selfish type of person and he has to fend for himself due to his background and home life. At the start, he came from a poor family so he had to be resourceful. He showed us that he ...was curled up in an old sleeping bag in the corner of the trailer s tiny laundry room, wedged into the gap between the wall and the dryer (Cline 13). The main character, Wade, was forced to sleep in the laundry room due to how overcrowdedness of the stack he was in. This sets up how many people are in that small area and adds to the loss that will come later in the story and that will play a part in changing him. He also was a very determined person. He was sometimes obsessive with the ways he studied the life of Halliday. He states that For the past five years, I d devoted all my free time to learning as much as I possibly could about James Halliday (Cline 52).
