A computer is an electronic device that accepts data as input, processes it, and produces the result as output automatically. It performs arithmetic and logical operations. A computer consists of hardware, which are the physical components like the keyboard, mouse and monitor, and software, which are the programs and languages used. In the next class, the document will cover the characteristics of computer systems.

• A computer is an electronic device.
• It accepts data as input and processes it to
produce the result as output.
• It is used to perform arithmetic and logical
operations automatically.
• Computer is not an acronym, it is a word
derived from a Latin word "computare" which
means to calculate.

• A computer is made up of two components -
one is the hardware and the other is the
software.
• All physical components of computer
including keyboard, mouse, monitor, etc, are a
part of the hardware.
