A healthy, balanced diet and lifestyle
HEALTHY, BALANCED LIFESTYLE DEFINITION:
We need to be fit and healthy to enable us to:
This means a balanced diet, plenty of exercise and a mixture of work and
leisure, which helps us lead enjoyable, constructive lives, avoid illness and feel
good about ourselves and others.
• Work for a living or go to school or college.
• Look after other members of our family and friends.
• Physically move from one place to another e.g. Walk
to school without getting out of breath.
• Play sports and engage in leisure activities.
• Make friends and socialise.
• Avoid illness and injury.
• Feel good in ourselves.
• Have a good sense of self-esteem and self worth.
A healthy, balanced lifestyle
TASK: With a partner, make a list of the factors you think contribute to a
healthy, balanced lifestyle.
 Eating a healthy and balanced diet
 Regular exercise
 Maintaining a health body weight
 Not smoking
 Sensible alcohol consumption
 Minimising stress
An active lifestyle
Task: What are the benefits of an active lifestyle?
 Keeps the heart muscle in shape and makes the heart a more efficient
pump.
 Increases blood flow and reduces heart disease.
 Reduces blood pressure
 Reduces stress
 Reduces diabetes risk
 Increases ‘good’ cholesterol
 Promotes a feeling of well-being
 Promotes a better social life/making friends
Indictors of health and well-being
1. Satisfaction with aspects of life
2. Frequency of positive and negative feelings
3. Frequency of feelings or activities which may have a positive or negative
impact on well-being.
4. Access to green space
5. Level of participation in other activities
6. Positive mental health.
TASK: Give examples for each-
1. Being satisfied with work or school and having good friendships.
Well-being: how do you feel?
Below are some statements about feelings and thoughts. Copy the statements
that best describe your experience over the past two weeks, or write your
own.
Rate yourself out of ten for how good you feel.

Plenary
Class split into two teams, each team given a set of different
calories.
Pictures of food and drink on board.
Task:
• Each team has 3 minutes to discuss the calories of each food.
• On the command ‘go’ they take in turns to place the calories
next to the correct food/drink (like a relay).
• First team finished gets two bonus points.
• 1 point awarded for each correctly placed calories.

  • 4. Lesson Outcomes By the end of the lesson you should be able to: • Describe the characteristics of a balanced, healthy lifestyle. • Identify and describe the measures/ indicators of health and well-being.

A healthy, balanced diet and lifestyle HEALTHY, BALANCED LIFESTYLE DEFINITION: We need to be fit and healthy to enable us to: This means a balanced diet, plenty of exercise and a mixture of work and leisure, which helps us lead enjoyable, constructive lives, avoid illness and feel good about ourselves and others. • Work for a living or go to school or college. • Look after other members of our family and friends. • Physically move from one place to another e.g. Walk to school without getting out of breath. • Play sports and engage in leisure activities. • Make friends and socialise. • Avoid illness and injury. • Feel good in ourselves. • Have a good sense of self-esteem and self worth.
  • 6. A healthy, balanced lifestyle TASK: With a partner, make a list of the factors you think contribute to a healthy, balanced lifestyle.  Eating a healthy and balanced diet  Regular exercise  Maintaining a health body weight  Not smoking  Sensible alcohol consumption  Minimising stress

An active lifestyle Task: What are the benefits of an active lifestyle?  Keeps the heart muscle in shape and makes the heart a more efficient pump.  Increases blood flow and reduces heart disease.  Reduces blood pressure  Reduces stress  Reduces diabetes risk  Increases ‘good’ cholesterol  Promotes a feeling of well-being  Promotes a better social life/making friends

Frequency of feelings or activities which may have a positive or negative impact on well-being. 4. Access to green space 5. Level of participation in other activities 6. Positive mental health. TASK: Give examples for each- 1. Being satisfied with work or school and having good friendships.
  • 11. Well-being: how do you feel? Below are some statements about feelings and thoughts. Copy the statements that best describe your experience over the past two weeks, or write your own. Rate yourself out of ten for how good you feel. I’ve been feeling useful. I’ve been feeling relaxed. I’ve had energy to spare. I’ve been thinking clearly. I’ve been feeling cheerful. I’ve been feeling confident. I’ve been feeling loved. I’ve been feeling optimistic about the future. I’ve been feeling interested in other people. I’ve been dealing with problems well. I’ve been feeling close to other people. I’ve been feeling good about myself. I’ve been able to make up my own mind about things. I’ve been interested in new things.
  • 12. Plenary Class split into two teams, each team given a set of different calories. Pictures of food and drink on board. Task: • Each team has 3 minutes to discuss the calories of each food. • On the command ‘go’ they take in turns to place the calories next to the correct food/drink (like a relay). • First team finished gets two bonus points. • 1 point awarded for each correctly placed calories.
