Body image and mental
health
Many women have negative body
images, which can put them at
higher risk of depression, eating
disorders, or other mental and
physical health problems. You can
take steps to develop a healthier
body image and get treatment for
mental health conditions.
Questions of the day:
• Are you happy with your body
image?
• Why does body image matter for
you?
• Worst comment you heard due to
your body weight?
• Many people of all ages,
genders, and cultures may
struggle with body image and
have a negative perception of
their own body and appearance.
With the increased use of
technology and more
involvement and use of social
media platforms, it doesn’t come
as a surprise that negative body
image is becoming more of
concern across the globe.
What is body image?
•Body image is affected by a lot of
things, including messages you get
from your friends, family, and the
world around you. Images we see in
the media definitely affect our body
image even though a lot of media
images are changed or aren't
realistic
Impact of Negative Body Image
• Sadly, negative body image is
becoming more and more
prevalent and starting at younger
ages. Studies have shown that
over 40 percent of 1st-3rd grade
girls want to be thinner and over
80 percent of ten year olds are
afraid of being fat.
• Higher body dissatisfaction is
associated with a poorer quality of
life, psychological distress and the
risk of unhealthy eating behaviors
and eating disorders.
What causes body image
concerns?
• our relationships with our family
and friends
• how our family and peers feel
and speak about bodies and
appearance
• exposure to images of
unrealistic bodies through media
or social media
• pressure to look a certain way
or to match an ‘ideal’ body type
How can I deal with body image
issues?
• List your great traits.
• Know your power.
• Treat your body well.
• Give your body a treat.
• Mind your media.
• Let yourself shine.
• Find fab friends
How can I encourage a healthier
body image?
• Treat your body with respect.
• Find a short message that helps
you feel good about yourself and
write it on mirrors around your
home to remind you to replace
negative thoughts with positive
thoughts.
• Notice when you judge yourself or
others based on weight, shape, or
size. Ask yourself if there are any
other qualities you could look for
when those thoughts come up
• Dress in a way that makes you feel
good about yourself, in clothes that fit
you now.
• Surround yourself with positive
friends and family who recognize
your uniqueness and like you just
as you are.
• Eat well-balanced meals and
exercise because it makes you
feel good and strong, not as a
way to control your body.
Proper Nutrition
• Nutrition is often defined as the ‘science
of food’, processing of food and its effects
on your health.
• That is why good nutrition will involve
anything that goes down your throat and
eventually becomes part of your body.
• Experts suggest that acquiring healthy
body systems depend 10% on genetics,
10% on exercise and 80% of a proper
nutritious diet.
A Healthy Diet
• Dieting is sometimes confused
with starving, which it certainly
is not.
• In order for you to maintain a
healthy lifestyle, your diet
needs to include proper
nutritional ingredients.
• Not only that, you also need to
develop consistent eating
habits.
• There are some universal principles
that you must apply in order for you
to provide proper nutrition to your
body:
• Do not completely eliminate any
food type from your diet. Rather
include all types according to their
required ratio as per the food
pyramid
• This keeps your metabolism level at
its optimum.
• Include lean protein, complex
carbohydrates, and good fats to your
diet generously while limiting your
saturated fats, starch and sugar to a
minimum.
• Consume most of your food closest
to their raw or original form
• Minimize your intake of extra
processed food and junk food.
Especially junk food, often it has
least or no nutritional values but is
packed with calories
• Replace juices that you drink with
raw fruits and avoid all sodas.
• Both juices and sodas are laden
with sugar and are not healthy for
you despite whatever they say on
the packaging.
• Consume vitamins, enzymes, and
fiber in the form of raw fruits and
vegetables

  • 4. Body image and mental health Many women have negative body images, which can put them at higher risk of depression, eating disorders, or other mental and physical health problems. You can take steps to develop a healthier body image and get treatment for mental health conditions.

  • 6. • Many people of all ages, genders, and cultures may struggle with body image and have a negative perception of their own body and appearance. With the increased use of technology and more involvement and use of social media platforms, it doesn’t come as a surprise that negative body image is becoming more of concern across the globe.
  • 7. What is body image? •Body image is affected by a lot of things, including messages you get from your friends, family, and the world around you. Images we see in the media definitely affect our body image even though a lot of media images are changed or aren't realistic
  • 8. Impact of Negative Body Image • Sadly, negative body image is becoming more and more prevalent and starting at younger ages. Studies have shown that over 40 percent of 1st-3rd grade girls want to be thinner and over 80 percent of ten year olds are afraid of being fat.
  • 9. • Higher body dissatisfaction is associated with a poorer quality of life, psychological distress and the risk of unhealthy eating behaviors and eating disorders.
  • 10. What causes body image concerns? • our relationships with our family and friends • how our family and peers feel and speak about bodies and appearance • exposure to images of unrealistic bodies through media or social media • pressure to look a certain way or to match an ‘ideal’ body type
  • 11. How can I deal with body image issues? • List your great traits. • Know your power. • Treat your body well. • Give your body a treat. • Mind your media. • Let yourself shine. • Find fab friends
  • 12. How can I encourage a healthier body image? • Treat your body with respect. • Find a short message that helps you feel good about yourself and write it on mirrors around your home to remind you to replace negative thoughts with positive thoughts.
  • 13. • Notice when you judge yourself or others based on weight, shape, or size. Ask yourself if there are any other qualities you could look for when those thoughts come up • Dress in a way that makes you feel good about yourself, in clothes that fit you now.
  • 14. • Surround yourself with positive friends and family who recognize your uniqueness and like you just as you are.
  • 15. • Eat well-balanced meals and exercise because it makes you feel good and strong, not as a way to control your body.

Proper Nutrition • Nutrition is often defined as the ‘science of food’, processing of food and its effects on your health. • That is why good nutrition will involve anything that goes down your throat and eventually becomes part of your body. • Experts suggest that acquiring healthy body systems depend 10% on genetics, 10% on exercise and 80% of a proper nutritious diet.
  • 17. A Healthy Diet • Dieting is sometimes confused with starving, which it certainly is not. • In order for you to maintain a healthy lifestyle, your diet needs to include proper nutritional ingredients. • Not only that, you also need to develop consistent eating habits.
  • 18. • There are some universal principles that you must apply in order for you to provide proper nutrition to your body: • Do not completely eliminate any food type from your diet. Rather include all types according to their required ratio as per the food pyramid

  • 20. • This keeps your metabolism level at its optimum. • Include lean protein, complex carbohydrates, and good fats to your diet generously while limiting your saturated fats, starch and sugar to a minimum. • Consume most of your food closest to their raw or original form
  • 21. • Minimize your intake of extra processed food and junk food. Especially junk food, often it has least or no nutritional values but is packed with calories • Replace juices that you drink with raw fruits and avoid all sodas.
  • 22. • Both juices and sodas are laden with sugar and are not healthy for you despite whatever they say on the packaging. • Consume vitamins, enzymes, and fiber in the form of raw fruits and vegetables
