What Is The Long Walk Essay
All of the sudden, the Navajos were forced to move off their land without any reason as to why. They were kicked out of their
homes and held captive against their will and either had the choice to move or die. The Long Walk is about how the U.S.
government forced the Navajos to walk from their homeland to a fort in New Mexico. Many died from the journey to
imprisonment. Did the U.S. government do the right thing to send the Navajos on a 300 mile trek or should the U.S. government
have left the Navajos at their homeland? The topics that will be discussed is what the Long Walk was, previous conflicts between
the U.S. government and the Navajos and what happened after the Navajos returned to their homeland.
The Long Walk is where the United States ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some of the people who were involved were U.S.army soldiers, one of whom was Kit Carson. Mainly, though, they were
Navajos: including men, women and children. Many Navajos refused to be confined upon a reservation by the U.S. government.
This journey was lead by Kit Carson and if any Navajo resisted they would be killed.
Kit Carson was born on December 24, 1809 in Kentucky. He was raised on the Missouri frontier and had to give up his education
to help his mother raise his 10 siblings after his father died in 1818. Even then he became an experienced trapper and hunter in his
twenties, and by the 1850s he was an American soldier. Kit Carson eventually became an American Indian agent and most of his
military was directed against the Navajo Indians. This is how he became the leader of the Long Walk.
After the Navajos arrived at Fort Sumner for imprisonment there were too many people, nearly double of the Fort s capacity.
There were issues with firewood, water and crops. There was not enough firewood to supply the warmth needed. The water was
bad and made many sick with diseases. The crops failed and were infested by worms not giving them enough food for everybody
to eat. So many of the Navajos died due the government s lack of

Yuma Research Paper
The real Yuma came around when the invention of canals for water source and steamboats. And with these new projects Yuma is
becoming stronger economic wise. Construction begins at the Laguna Dam, with lots of hands working on it the opening day July
6th, 1905 was the day Yuma Region to have stable supply of water year round. Now with this Farmers can grow more crops
easier and people can drink cleaner water.
One of the challenges developers faced while building these canals was flooding. In 1916 a major flood hit Yuma destroying
buildings and homes and more reconstruction needed to be done. To make this water source lasts developers had to change these
canals. By adding siphons along the canals and rivers making the water flowing and stable. Now with the water at a steady flow
more Wheat, Cotton, Broccoli and Lettuce can be grown for the seasons. The Colorado River flows progressively, Indians in the

would work on the fields growing crops. The Yuma Project was important in many ways. One important factor is construction on
the city. Over time there was not much places where people can enjoy the day or stay at a home. The results had people staying at
these homes to work and make a living. When many canals were built there would be occurring floods. A flood hit in 1916 in the
city of Yuma causing reconstruction on the city. When it was all payed for the buildings were built better. When the canals break

Of The Irresoubleness Of Diamonds, By Monica Ferrell
Grammar consists of a wide array of concepts, meanings, and different classes of words. It can be defined as a linguistic system
that exists in the mind of a speaker of a language, a written description of a language, and an abstract notation of an ideal set of
rules (of correct or proper grammar) which can be encoded in a handbook (Studies in English Grammar Handbook, pg.7). Monica
Ferrell s, Of the Irresoubleness of Diamonds , Harmless, As Recalled by a Fairy Tale , Gerburt des Monicakinds , and Beautiful
Funeral each employ four different grammatical issues one of them being the known new contract. By incorporating these
grammatical issues into her work, Ferrell intends to develop a clear and sharp image to ignite the imagination of her readers. The
poems Of the Irresoubleness of Diamonds , Harmless, As Recalled by a Fairy Tale , Gerburt des Monicakinds and Beautiful
Funeral were written by poet and novelist Monica Ferrell. Monica Ferrell was born in New Dehli. She earned her BA from
Harvard University and MFA from Columbia University (Poetry Foundation). Ferrell discusses the role of uncertainty in her
poems. She states, I m trying to let something that wants to come into being do so poetry as uncovering, rather than invention or
rhetoric, and a form of devotion and service . (Poetry Foundation). By using several grammar techniques Ferrell paints a bright
image for her readers to ponder upon. Ferrell is an atypical poem and uses a variety of forms to convey her simple and lyrical tone
throughout them. One of the reasons that I chose her poems is because of the strong, lyrical language she uses to convey the
imagery and earnest tone. Monica Ferrell s poem, Of the irresoubleness of Diamonds uses grammatical concepts such as
attributive adjectives. There are three examples where Ferrell uses attributive adjectives in her poem. One example where Ferrell
uses attributive adjectives is when she describes, Its delicate handle, the pictures painted there (line 3), the word delicate appears
before the noun and is modifying it. Through this example Ferrell she compares her love for someone to a teacup, perhaps
implying that it could be the amount of feelings she has for

Similarities And Differences Of Philip II And King Philip...
There have been many absolute rulers throughout time that are quite different but also somewhat alike in the way they ruled. An
absolute ruler is someone who rules a country or kingdom by themselves. There have been many different absolute rulers
throughout time, such as Peter, Charles II, and the most famous, Louis XIV. Another example of an absolute ruler was Philip II
who ruled Spain from 1527 to 1598. His religion was Roman Catholicism who felt it was his duty to defend Catholicism. Kim
Jong Un is an absolute ruler of this time who began ruling in 2010 in North Korea. Kim himself has no religion and discourages
religion in North Korea. There are many differences and similarities between rulers Philip II and King Jong Un s domestic and ...

Because Spain needed money, Philip raised taxes on the Netherlands. He also tried to ruin Protestantism. People were angry and
came to Catholic churches to protest. Philip sent an army to punish the mobs of people, which resulted in one thousand, five
hundred Protestants murdered. In addition, Philip was a ruler with great power that did what he had to for his country.
Present day ruler, Kim Jong Un is known for his cruel ways of ruling and his nuclear power. North Korea has no religion, as it is
discouraged. Because there is no religion, most citizens get into fights about their ideas of religion. Other people are too afraid to
talk about their religion and even pass it on to their children because of what Kim Jong Un might do. Kim is known for executing
people to get his way. Since he came to power, he has ordered at least three hundred and forty people to death. One hundred and
forty of these people were apart of his government. Due to the executions, his people fear him. On a different topic, North Korea

largest trading partner is China, gaining food and energy. Other trading partners include, Pakistan, Asia, Russia, etc. China was
also the one who gave North Korea nuclear weapons. North Korea was short on nuclear weapons and Kim decided it was time to
advance the weaponry. As of 2014, the North Korean Army has 950,000

How Fair Use Has Changed Over Time
Tables and Figures
Introduction
In part one of this paper I will be discussing fair use in detail. I will be covering why fair use is important, how fair use has
developed over time, as well as the four factors in determining whether or not a piece of work qualifies under fair use. I will also
be talking about appropriation art in this paper.
Thesis: In this paper I will be talking about fair use, how fair use has developed into appropriation art, and how copyright has
changed over time.
Thesis: This paper will discuss the specifics of copyright through fair use and appropriation art, how the laws have changed over
the past 50 years, and its impact on the field.
How the Laws Have Changed:
I. Shift from publication to creation (public domain) Art before 1978 the public standard The copyright act of 1909 Art created
after 1978
II. Future of Copyright Copyright Laws need to evolve to new technology To provide incentives to professionals To provide
freedom to amatures
Impact on the Field: Banksy, Shepard Fairey
Fair Use
Definition
Fair use is an exemption within copyright law that basically permits anyone to use copyrighted materials without payment and
without approval, subject to certain conditions.
Fair use limits the rights of the copyright holder by allowing unauthorized copying in circumstances that are roughly consistent
with promoting economic efficiency. According to Susan M. Bielstein in her book, Permissions, a Survival Guide: Blunt Talk

Essay on Psychological Theories of Attachment
Psychological Theories of Attachment Ethological theory (The study of animal behaviour) probably the most important theory, as
the ethological approach is concerned with the adaptive or survival aspect of behaviour and started with the work of Charles
Darwin. Darwin himself did not come up with the idea of evolution, however what Darwin did was to explain evolution and
publish it in his books Natural Selection (1858) and The Origin of Species (1859). The ideas in these books inspired Konrad
Lorenz in his studies and it was Lorenz s ideas that laid the foundations for an evolutionary approach to attachment. During his
experiments on wildfowl Lorenz (1952) discovered Imprinting (the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Harlow s experiments challenged the views held by Freud who viewed attachment as being mainly a function for feeding, as
Harlow showed contact and comfort to be of more importance; it is hard to prove if this is the same for human babies because of
the ethics in conducting a similar experiment, however Shaffer and Emerson (1964) showed interesting similarities to Harlow.
They saw that children can be attached to family members who seldom, if ever, feed them and that children who experience
frequent separations from their caregivers, and also sleep alone at night, can develop a strong emotional tie with a soft toy or
blanket. Shaffer and Emerson s explanation of why children attach is known as the Sensitive Responsive theory, which states
Babies form attachments with those that are aware of the babies social needs and interact with them, rather than those who largely
ignore them, except when they are crying. (An introduction to child development Pg 38). Schaffer and Emerson carried out their
studies in Glasgow; their studies following sixty infants from birth to eighteen months and interviewing their mothers on a
monthly basis. Shaffer and

Analysis Of The Torrance Refinery With 25 Safety Violations
In an earlier report, Cal/OSHA had previously cited the Torrance refinery with 25 safety violations in November 2014 (Kenealy,
2015). Following the explosion, workers at the refinery voiced their concerns over these past and present violations and even
conducted a strike involving 7,000 employees across 15 refineries. The strike was intended to bring awareness to the occupational
hazards created by ExxonMobil s failed safety protocols and procedures. By not addressing these problems earlier when these
violations were identified, incidents like the Torrance explosion could perhaps be resolved before they become troublesome. The
failure to do so has cost the company greatly in monetary damages as they pay out fines to the federal ... Show more content on

With new protocols in place, it is estimated by the EPA that ExxonMobil will spend up to $20 million to upgrade their existing
storage units for wastewater to prevent future contamination of the environment (Fowler, 2013). State courts have also come
down on ExxonMobil for not adhering to environmental codes. ExxonMobil agreed to pay $225 million to the state of New
Jersey after it was found that its Linden and Bayonne refineries had been polluting the surrounding environment (Snow, 2015).
The case initially brought forth an $8.9 billion lawsuit against ExxonMobil for polluting wetlands and bodies of water, but was
negotiated and eventually settled between the two parties (Dawsey, 2015). While the financial impact of this lawsuit is clear, it is
also important to note that these standards exist to protect the welfare of ecosystems and the people and animals who live in them.
Government regulation has been shown to be strict in these matters and the result is a crushing economic loss for ExxonMobil.
Moreover, ExxonMobil loses credibility in these regions as residents are made aware of the environmental damages happening in
their own backyards. GROWING PRODUCTION COSTS The phrase, You have to spend money to make money , is no stranger
to the oil and gas industry. ExxonMobil has seen an increase in its production costs over the past four years as the processes
necessary to conduct business have proved to be more expensive. The very act of drilling

The Snows of Kilimanjaro and The Short, Happy Life of...
Ernest Hemingway was an intricate and dedicated writer who devoted a significant portion of his life to writing multiple genres of
stories. Throughout his stories, the similarities in his style and technique are easily noted and identified. Two of the short stories
he wrote contain themes and motifs that specifically explain the plotline. The first story, The Snows of Kilimanjaro, sets its scene
in the depths of a desolate area in Africa, where the main characters, Harry and his wife, decide to make their home. After living
there for a few years, Harry ventures out and falls into a thorn bush, thus infecting his leg with gangrene. A few weeks later, he
finds himself on the brink between life and death, unable to treat such a severe ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Short, Happy Life of Francis Macomber also contains the theme of arduous moral situations for the characters. Margot, the
wife of Francis, is challenged by the temptation to have relations with their tour guide. Eventually, she commits the crime of
adultery, and her husband finds out about her crime and is deeply shaken. Well, why doesn t he keep his wife where she belongs?
What does he think I am, a bloody plaster saint? Let him keep her where she belongs. It s his own fault (Hemingway 13). By the
tone of Wilson thoughts, it is inferred that he is not able to find fault in himself and decides to blame it on the most vulnerable
person, Francis. In spite of Wilson being the only man to blame for this whole incident, Margot can also take part of the blame.
She appears to be a faithful and caring wife, but her actions do not justify this statement. As stated in Short Stories for Students:
The phrase well kept is particularly revealing in its multiple meanings. On one hand, Margot is fashionable and presents herself
well. Furthermore, she is kept by her husband in a state of luxurious affluence. Ironically, she is not well kept by her husband at
all, as she freely and unapologetically commits adultery. Her marriage to Francis Macomber is obviously not a happy one. ( Short

Moonlight Movie Analysis
At the Hot Wings and Hot Topics, we watched the movie, Moonlight, which is about a Black American man named Chiron, and
takes place in 1980 in Miami. The movie is about 3 parts of Chiron s life; young adolescence, mid teen, and young adult. The first
Chapter is his childhood in which he is known as Little. He lived in a neighborhood full of crime with his mom who was a drug
addict. Little is a little, shy boy who tends to be bullied. He has one friend his age named Chris, and a drug dealer named Juan,
who sees how neglected Little is from his mom. Because of this, Juan tries to give as much care to Little, and so does his
girlfriend, Teresa, and they allow Chiron to go to their house whenever he needs to get away from the bullying or his mother. The
next chapter is Chiron, and is about his teen life. This is where we learn a little about Chiron s sexuality, and when he begins to
stick up for himself towards the end of the chapter. We see peer pressure in this chapter because if affect what Chiron, and his
friends are accepted to do. In the third chapter, Black, we see Chiron all good up, and no longer skinny, but built like a strong
man. After leaving Miami, Black is a drug dealer, is no longer weak, but is a drug dealer like Juan. He has a lot of masculinity
now with his body, and what he wears. His old friend, Chris, gives him a call to come see him after years, and we are left with
them hugging each other. The discussion begins with the end of the movie when

Presumed Innocent Essay
Presumed Innocent
Innocent until proven guilty has been an important mantra in US law. The burden of proof remains on the prosecution to prove
beyond a reasonable doubt that the accused is guilty. This principle guides the premise that wrongly accusing the incident is a
greater harm than not punishing the guilty, and sets a clean slate to build on in the minds of the Judge and jury. Additionally, this
principle protects from unreasonable accusations assuming that significant evidence must be present first.
Opposite of this philosophy would be guilty until proven innocent. In societies following this philosophy the accused must jump
through hurdles to prove they are indeed innocent. Imagine, for example, you come home after a long day, flop down on the
couch and fall asleep watching TV. Suddenly, bursting into the room comes the police, arresting you for robbing the convenience
store down the street. You were there, you were asleep, but how do you prove this, the clerk said you did it. How do you proceed?
Unjustly charged, potentially punished, having the presumption of innocence would have protected you.
While Presumed Innocent is the mantra in the courts, it rarely is practiced in the court of public opinion. As seen in the movie
Presumed Innocent the lead character, Rozat Sabich, was charged with a highly publicized murder. Being a public figure in the
midst of an election, his arrest was publicized heavily in the media. As the story leaked out, and

Global Cliimate Change War
Admiral Samuel J. Locklear III claims that global climate change is the most imposing threat in the Pacific Ocean rather than
military threats found from other countries. This piece of information from Admiral Locklear deserves the attention of the
American people, because the Admiral is putting global climate change and its effects ahead of the safety of the American people
from other military powers/threats. Admiral Locklear s claim is flawed for these reasons: he is neglecting current affairs with
nuclear threats from North Korea, conflict between China/Japan, and he is putting the safety of the American people second to
helping other countries from the threat of global climate change.
According to Admiral Locklear, global climate change in the Pacific Ocean is a much more daunting threat to the U.S. military
based in the Pacific, rather than other military threats. Locklear states that climate change will, cripple the security environment,
probably more likely than the other scenarios we all often talk about. The Admiral also mentions how the Pacific Ocean and the
long term threats to the peace of East Asia, is found at the center of the Obama administration s defense strategy, and that
protecting these regions from climate change threats should be the top priority. Locklear s forces again and again have to respond
to the disastrous weather occurrences that are growing more constant as the Earth s climate continues to change.
Admiral Locklear clearly states that

and reaped all the rewards. This continued until helpers came and convinced a few members that they could earn them a better
rate of return by selling and buying various stocks for a small fee. The fees of the helpers and taxes from capital gains result in the
diminishing of the entire family s wealth. The parable is trying to get a person to understand that by paying others to make your
investment decisions, they are actually taking away from you. In Buffett s words For investors as a whole, returns decrease as
motion increases (5). This is the general theme of the book; that as your investment strategy gets more complicated, returns will
decrease. Jon Bogle takes this idea and runs with it in the rest of the book, discussing 3 simple ideas: invest primarily in stocks,
invest for the long term, and invest in index funds. In the book, Bogle compares purchasing stocks with that of the return on
businesses. He sees that the correlation is very similar; by investing in stocks, you are investing in the business as well. This
makes it risky in the short term, because of unpredictability. Half of stocks a person picks will beat the market, and half won t
generally. This results in the concept of a zero sum game. Once you add in fees though, the result is a loser s game. He goes on to
discuss how the S P, the largest 500 companies, has outpaced the largest cap funds over the years though and how stocks can earn
you profit if you diversify. The next concept Bogle

Comparing The Map Model And The Skyscraper Model
1. Compare and contrast the Skyscraper Model and the culture as a Map model. Which do you prefer and why? The Skyscraper
model divides culture in to high and low. This is superior products at the top and inferior ones at the bottom. The high culture is
known as the fine art group. Examples of high culture (the top of the tower) is ballet and the syphomy. The low culture is known
as the junk group. The low culture (the bottom of the tower) is rock music and video games. The Skyscraper model has allowed
critics to develop five areas of concern: inability to appreciate fine art, a tendency to exploit high culutre, a throway ethic, a
diminishing audience for high culture, and dulling our cultural taste buds. The second model is the Map Model. ... Show more

The theme I see with trashy shows is that they have no value to them. They don t have something that really makes you think or

universally trashy is the Jerry Springer show. I am pretty sure they give that show in other countries. A show that I think is
universally in good taste is Grey s Anatomy. I know a lot of people who are obsessed with that show and it can be educational. I

The Wisconsin Fast Plant, otherwise known as the Brassica Rapa, is a petite plant and researching tool bred by Dr. Paul Williams
and used to improve disease resistance of the cruciferous plants. Dr. Williams was able to breed the Fast Plant with other related
species of the Cruciferae family, in order to achieve shorter life cycles. Fast Plant life cycles have been reduced from the average
six month cycle to a five week cycle (History of Wisconsin Fast Plants). These plants have been known to show exponential
growth results within the first two weeks. Fast Plants are also known to share familial ties with other groups of plants such as
mustard, cabbage, etc. Dr. Williams was able to achieve breeding a short life cycle plant through selective breeding and cross

Semiotics Of The Kitchen Analysis
Semiotics of the kitchen by Martha Rosler and Safe by Todd Haynes both revolves around the theme on Feminism. One is
performing and the other acting, as to how women are depicted as weak or strong in character in different scenerios. In Martha
Rosler s six minutes video art, it represents a Martha Rosler, a women who performs using kitchen tools based in a kitchen
setting. While, Safe by Todd Haynes is a two hour plus film where it depicts a female character that slowly weakens in her mental
and physical state as she have contracted a virus called environmental illness or rather multiple chemical sensitivity in the
twentieth century. Her condition worsens as the film progresses.
Martha Rosler performs her art video work 1975 video Semiotics of the Kitchen. The only figure in the video and is accompanied

Tertiary Structure
Task 2
a) The tertiary structure refers to the structural arrangement of amino acids that are found far away from one another along the
polypeptide chain. The tertiary structure is overall a three dimensional shape of a protein molecule. It will bend and twist to
achieve maximum stability. The shape of a tertiary structure is made when the secondary structure folds in on itself and is held in
place by many bonds and interactions formed by the R groups in the amino acid chain. The bonds and interactions involved are
hydrogen bonds, ionic bonds, hydrophobic interactions and disulphide bonds. These bonds and interactions are located in
different areas of the tertiary structure, the hydrogen bonds are located inbetween polar R groups, ionic bonds are located between
charged R groups, hydrophobic interactions are located between nonpolar R groups and disulphide bonds are formed generally in
the endoplasmic reticulum by oxidation . Hydrogen bonds may form between different side
chain groups. Hydrophobic
interactions are brought about in an aqueous site. The tertiary structure is held together mainly by interactions that are located at
the R groups.
A protein with a tertiary structure could be a myoglobin protein. The myoglobin protein has a alpha helix. Bonds between the side
groups of the amino acid are responsible for holding together the tertiary structure of myoglobin. The myoglobin is found in the ...

The True Value of Time and how it Affects humanity Time is precious, the one thing no one can control. In the story, Machine
Stops, written by E. M. Forster, life today has changed drastically from what was known yesterday and much of life lived in the
past has been forgotten. A life lived today revolves around the Machine that takes care of simple tasks by the click of a button, for
anything else would be a waste of time. The meaning of age, the importance of ideas, the emotions that follow have all been
pushed aside, once everything s been taken care of by the Machine. People who live on the Machine are now more anxious than
previous generations; their lack of mobility has weakened their limbs so much, that they cannot tell what was failing ... Show

Member of the Wedding by Carson Mccullers
Without connection to others there is no me
Throughout our lives, everyone that we share bonds with and interact with on a regular basis, either forms or has some sort of
influence on our identity. Consequently, the majority of us naturally find ourselves striving to fit in with these people, especially
during the tough transition from childhood to adulthood. It is this part of the human condition that makes us feel as though we
must forge ties with something outside of ourselves in order to establish a strong sense of existence and a clear understanding of
who we are. Although most individuals are able to make these connections with others naturally, others who stray from the social
norm might not be so fortunate, but rather than ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But still, she didn t let anyone s disapproval of her identity deter her, and continued to carry the burden of being alienated in order
to remain true to herself. By expressing her homosexuality with self assurance, others were eventually forced to accept Ruby for
who she was, and she has since gone on to be extremely successful in life, having been selected to act in a number of films
including the Australian comedy Suite for Fleur , designing her own fashion range, and much more. In 2008 and 2009, she was
also chosen as one of the 25 Most Influential Gay and Lesbian Australians by Same Same , an Australian online gay and lesbian
community. This indicates that true existence can only be found when our decisions and actions are truly our own; when we stand
alone and free of connections, without social influence.
Considering a different perspective, it can be argued that both sides of the argument are true to a certain extent, in that we are able
to possess a sense of existence whilst devoid of most connections, but there are some affiliations such as the bonds we share with
our family that we cannot live without. A sense of acceptance from our familial ties and intimate relationships with others shape
who we are. These connections ideally provide love, protection, security and the opportunity to discover our values, attitudes, and
beliefs that help to define us from the time of our birth. In The Member of the Wedding ,

Marijuana Should Not Go Without Suspicion
An indian hemp plant, by the name of marijuana, is the unlikely suspect of thousands of drug induced accidents and/or deaths in
Australia today, especially among teens. At first thought, many may believe alcohol is the outright cause of such accidents, but at
a closer look at the facts and figures one will discover that marijuana should not go without suspicion. The vast amounts of
chemicals of which marijuana contains each have their own impacts unto the human body, not to mention the increasing use of
the drug among teens. It is here then obvious that marijuana should be the headline of this ad campaign, in comparison to alcohol
a much less substantial drug.

In an attempt to get the most out of it , marijuana users have a tendency to inhale deeply and hold the smoke for as long as
possible to increase the effects of the drug, which then on worsens the damage to the lungs. Another organ marijuana effectively
destroys is the immune system of which alcohol has not yet been seen to damage. Marijuana also contains some cancer causing
ingredients that remain for incredibly long in the body after the drug has been taken. Studies in 2008 have shown a link between
years of heavy marijuana use and brain abnormalities a large suspect of the long patterns of psychosis in the users of the drug.
Some other effects of marijuana use include: deformation of the sperm cells, disrupted menstrual cycles, diminished mental
functions, hereditary defects and, most prominently, major depression and/or anxiety. Marijuana s unpleasant effects take away
any user s quality of life, let alone a small teen, and continues to have substantially larger impacts unto these children especially
in comparison to alcohol.

difficult to escape from. Packed with addictive ingredients, marijuana is targeted towards the teens of today. Peer pressure makes

Essay about Critical Response to the Turn of the Screw
Henry James novella the Turn of the Screw is a highly ambiguous piece of fiction. Set in Edwardian England, a very naïve
woman is left in charge of two young children. The beautiful Bly however appears to be hiding a few dark secrets. The
appearance of two ghosts plays on the governess mind, she comes to the conclusion the children are in danger and being
possessed by these two horrors. Throughout the novella James successfully creates a mystical atmosphere, his ambiguous style
forces us to think twice about what is written and decide for ourselves whether or not this is purely a ghost story or something far
more sinister. However after several reads and a close look behind the words, it becomes clear that the ghosts that haunt the ...

A woman as fanciful and dreamy as this in such a position is not going to survive.
As we continue to read this novella we must notice the governess wild and unnecessary use of elaborate adjectives to describe the
simplest of things. Her style of writing in itself is quite romantic and poetic, full of metaphors and oxymorons. However
sometimes her choice of words is so prompting we must take a closer look into perhaps a double or triple meaning. When she first
sights the ghost of Peter Quint on top of the house she is able to describe his position with amazing precision in note of the fact
she was some distance from him and her sighting was quite brief. She comments he stood at an angle, tall and erect... he fixed me
with a hard gaze and when yet again she confides in Mrs Grouse she gives a very elaborate description commenting on his tight
red curls, pale face, long in shape, small tiny whickers, darker arched eyebrows and the fact that he had no hat . The governess
even uses phrases such as the intercourse of our conversation added to the intensity of our meeting in description of everyday
things such as normal conversation. The governess certainly has deeper meaning behind most of her words.
The last and most important point in regards to the governess repressed sexual desires is her highly inappropriate and
unprofessional behaviour with both her pupils, in particular Miles. There is a constant underlying power struggle between the
two. The

Perfume Vs Chronicles Of A Death Foretold
When writing novels, most authors have a specific technique they prefer to use. Whether it be their choice of words, the sentence
structure, or even the order in which the story is told. Typically, novels are read in chronological order, meaning that events take
place in an order of sequence. As said before, most authors have a preferred technique used in their writing. In this case, Gabriel
Garcia Marquez, author of Chronicles of a Death Foretold, uses a non chronological manner in his work. Meanwhile author of
Perfume, Patrick Suskind tells his story in a chronological order. Both of these techniques affect the reader in two similar, but
different ways. Starting off, the fictional novel Chronicles of a Death Foretold does not relate events

Mathematical Constants Are Useful For Programming Essay
Programmatically Computing Mathematical Constants
Many mathematical constants are useful for programming. For instance, if you need to use the transcendental number pi, you
need to calculate it somehow. I set out to create a library of sorts to calculate as many mathematical constants as I could.
Constant
Explanation and Code
Alladi Grinstead constant
The Alladi Grinstead constant is defined as ec 1, where ck=21kln(kk 1). To do summation (), one has to use a for loop with
precision limiting behavior.
This code uses an interchanged summation using the Riemann zeta function (n), this converges much faster than the technical
definition above, which is essential to optimizing the code.
The value of the Alladi Grinstead constant is:
0.809394020540639130717931880594091317215953992425000304242028715042999012516547322311518407819723616915
Apéry s constant
This is simply the value of the Riemann Zeta function at 3. So, (3).
The entire program uses an external library called Boost, which provides extended precision (theoretically arbitrary precision) and
inherent mathematical functions. The line that begins with return is what returns the value to be used for further purposes.
The value of Apéry s constant is:

Equality In Early Generations In The United States
Earlier generations who migrated from other countries that came to start a new life had many things to accomplish. At the start of
the migration, people and settlers came for a new beginning and also a fresh start at life itself. With that tough task at hand, it also
came with a price, such as equality, fighting for rights, the constant need for change and following a movement. During this essay
I will be able to shed some light and point of views on equality on generations, political pressure, engaging in strikes and the
division in social classes. In earlier generations, equality was not a topic that was very popular. If you were born into a poor

If the bosses are corrupt and control the majority of how things operate, then there is no voice among the poor and middle class
people. If they are employing me 80 90 percent of my day and not letting me or my people utilize the public subways or common
things that everyone else is, they are essentially trying to contain us, so that we are so unprivileged and exhausted we wouldn t put
up a fight. They are also limiting us in giving us access to what was once considered public . The social classes are divided in this
perspective, if you knew or know someone of power them you belonged and if you didn t, then in turn you were looked down
upon as someone with no rights. In conclusion the equality of earlier generations was really never established until people began
to rebel and make it noticeable. A strike would only be necessary if the bosses where not corrupt and not control the public uses of
everything that was once common. Finally, with the division of social classes would have change if at the beginning of time there

The Power Of Poetry In Terence This Is Stupid Stuff By A....
The Power of Poetry Terence This is Stupid Stuff, by A.E. Housman compelling work of poetry that addresses mainly the theme
of the power of poetry and why we should read poetry. Many sections in this poem portray this theme, but one line that shows it
best is the section in which Terence, the person whose perspective the poem is being told through, explains that you need to read
little bit of poetry so you will be prepared when hard times come to you. Another section that portrays this theme of the power of
poetry and why we should read poetry is the section in which Housman is talking about the fact that, when you get drunk, the
world seems great and you are happy, but the happiness is temporary, but poetry helps you permanently. A third section that
portrays this theme of the power of poetry and why we should read poetry is the section in which Terence is talking about King
Mithridates, and that he built up an immunity to the world s poisons by eating little bits of the poison so when others tried to
assassinate him, he was immune. Terence suggests that poetry can be like little bits of poison, so when the bad times come, you
will be ready. Terence This is Stupid Stuff, by A.E. Housman is about the theme of the power of poetry and why we should read

to read a poem, but when he reads a very sad poem, they point out that he is fine, so he shouldn t read poetry. Terence responds by
telling them that even if you aren t sad, you should still read poetry because it will prepare you for times when you are sad or are
in bad times because you will be able to see what struggles people have been through and can relate to them. This is shown in the
quote, . This section shows that Housman thinks that people should read poetry even when they are not sad because it feels like
you have that you can relate to. He also says that it helps when you can experience what someone else has experienced because

The reason why Henry reacts this way is because of fear. The enemies had just finished fighting and Henry thought he d have a

St. Ambrose Research Paper
When he was 33, Saint Ambrose was living a rich life. He was a successful lawyer and governor. However, when the bishop of
Milan died, Ambrose went to go calm the people. The people started chanting, Ambrose for bishop! Ambrose did not want to give
up his career for the life threatening occupation (St. Ambrose par. 5) of being bishop, so he fled. He went to the emperor, but the
emperor said that he was right for the job. Once he took up the position, Ambrose gave away his property and learned Scripture
and theology. Ambrose used his skills as a lawyer and orator to fight the Arians in church, court, senate, and even the emperor s
own family. (St. Ambrose par. 7) Although his stubbornness originally made him deny the job. It was his stubbornness that also
made him a strong bishop. (St. Ambrose par.1 7)
One of Saint Ambrose s famous quotes is A kindness received should be returned with a freer hand. He said this because he was
living in a time when people were not treated kindly. Saint Ambrose believed in human kindness and equality. These are some

were chosen for the position, due to their leadership styles. These leaders style of management were not at all what the office is

The potential directors that were interviewed were persistent with wanting to control everything that s going on in the office and
making sure that they are over every decision that are being made. They want to be the go to person for everything that is

Oozing Hegemonic Masculinity in the Super Bowl Commercials
Many of us watch the Super Bowl to check out what we expect to be the most innovative and entertaining commercials of the
year. Given the grand stage on which these commercials air, it is important that we analyze them in their proper context.
Remember, this is a sporting event, one in which only men are allowed to participate (as athletes/coaches), where violent
collisions are celebrated, and where most of the audience is male. Considering these gendered parameters, we should not be
surprised that many of the 2012 Super Bowl commercials ooze hegemonic masculinity. In this post David Mayeda explores how a
masculinity can be used to opress men and women alike.
Back in 1987, Raewyn Connell coined the term hegemonic masculinity in a seminal text, Gender Power. Hegemonic masculinity
refers to the dominant form of masculinity that exists within a particular culture. Relative to this ever changing, idealized form of
masculinity are different subordinated masculinities those within a culture that do not live up to the so called masculine gold
standard. Put simply, there are real men and then there are all other men.
In watching the 2012 Super Bowl commercials, we can see versions of hegemonic masculinity demonstrated. Perhaps the most
vivid version was seen in H M s Super Bowl ad, utilizing soccer (futbol) star, David Beckham:
Tattooed, rugged, athletic, showcasing a lean musculature and menacing glare, Beckham embodies a hegemonic masculinity that
would surely resonate

Music Is The Most Popular Genres Of Music Essay
Music has been found in every culture in present time, as well as in the past, dating back almost 55,000 years (citation), with roots
in Africa. Music is one of the most basic art forms and is a way of life for many; a means of expression relative to emotions,
culture, and one s self. Music is all around us and it s hard to imagine going one day without listening to some variety of music.
Music has evolved tremendously from prehistoric times today, but one thing s stayed the same one culture s music is influenced
by the culture as a whole. The period in history directly influences the style and genre of music. For example, in the mid 1930 s,
during the Great Depression, Swing music became one of the most popular genres of music, because it created an upbeat vibe,
which created pleasure and happiness that hadn t been felt due to the Great Depression. Through music, the American population
was able to experience a sense of joy that was otherwise absent during that period in history. The brain is an astonishing organ of
the human body, comprising the majority of the central nervous system. The brain has great control over functions of the body, as
a whole. The brain allows for thoughts and actions to be executed on a daily basis. Fundamental functions of the brain include
instincts, emotions, behavior, and concepts (Perlovsky, 2012). Further, the brain constantly develops and transforms, according to
one s environment (nurture vs. nature), behavior, and brain injury.

Feminism for me has come to be the recognition of oppression and privilege. What one does with this knowledge of oppression

different feminist theories in a continuum of the feminist movement. Therefore, these theories cannot be boxed into clear cut
categories that share nothing in common with each other. I will attempt to formulate my own feminist theory using the previous
works of feminist scholars as my foundation. In order to explain the application of this theory, I will illuminate a feminist issue.
Further, I will present ways to tackle the problem and provide limitations of my theory. My feminist theory ... Show more content

Through colonization and globalization this system of domination seeks to convert the more egalitarian societies. An example of
this spread of domination is the white settler s attitude towards conquering and taming the nature, which was forcefully embedded
in the Native American culture. I am interested in exploring how the foundation of the issue, which is tied to women s sexuality,
plays out in the colonial context. To examine this, I will look at the institution of marriage and prove that it is a form of
patriarchal colonization of women. When I talk about colonization of women, the colonizer is not the western world but
patriarchy. However, to make connections with colonization, I frequently use the example of White Western colonizers (Europe)
against the dark skinned Third World dwellers (Americas, Africa, Asia and Oceania). Although marriage, wedding ceremonies,
and other rituals related to marriage varies from culture and/or geographic location, for sake of simplicity I will look at a marriage
system of monogamy between a man and a woman for life. In this system they are expected to procreate and stay together as a
nuclear family. This is close to the Western system of marriage, which is seeping into many other cultures through forces of
capitalism and cultural hegemony. There are subtle messages that girls at a young age get about getting married. Simone de
Beauvoir wrote in the Second Sex Marriage

They were kicked out of their homes and held captive against their will and either had the choice to move or die. The Long Walk is about how the U.S. government forced the Navajos to walk from their homeland to a fort in New Mexico. Many died from the journey to imprisonment. Did the U.S. government do the right thing to send the Navajos on a 300 mile trek or should the U.S. government have left the Navajos at their homeland? The topics that will be discussed is what the Long Walk was, previous conflicts between the U.S. government and the Navajos and what happened after the Navajos returned to their homeland. Mainly, though, they were Navajos: including men, women and children. Many Navajos refused to be confined upon a reservation by the U.S. government. This journey was lead by Kit Carson and if any Navajo resisted they would be killed. Kit Carson was born on December 24, 1809 in Kentucky. He was raised on the Missouri frontier and had to give up his education to help his mother raise his 10 siblings after his father died in 1818. Even then he became an experienced trapper and hunter in his twenties, and by the 1850s he was an American soldier. Kit Carson eventually became an American Indian agent and most of his military was directed against the Navajo Indians. This is how he became the leader of the Long Walk. After the Navajos arrived at Fort Sumner for imprisonment there were too many people, nearly double of the Fort s capacity. There were issues with firewood, water and crops. There was not enough firewood to supply the warmth needed. The water was bad and made many sick with diseases. The crops failed and were infested by worms not giving them enough food for everybody to eat. So many of the Navajos died due the government s lack of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Of The Irresoubleness Of Diamonds, By Monica Ferrell Grammar consists of a wide array of concepts, meanings, and different classes of words. It can be defined as a linguistic system that exists in the mind of a speaker of a language, a written description of a language, and an abstract notation of an ideal set of rules (of correct or proper grammar) which can be encoded in a handbook (Studies in English Grammar Handbook, pg.7). Monica Ferrell s, Of the Irresoubleness of Diamonds , Harmless, As Recalled by a Fairy Tale , Gerburt des Monicakinds , and Beautiful Funeral each employ four different grammatical issues one of them being the known new contract. By incorporating these grammatical issues into her work, Ferrell intends to develop a clear and sharp image to ignite the imagination of her readers. The poems Of the Irresoubleness of Diamonds , Harmless, As Recalled by a Fairy Tale , Gerburt des Monicakinds and Beautiful Funeral were written by poet and novelist Monica Ferrell. Monica Ferrell was born in New Dehli. She earned her BA from Harvard University and MFA from Columbia University (Poetry Foundation). Ferrell discusses the role of uncertainty in her poems. She states, I m trying to let something that wants to come into being do so poetry as uncovering, rather than invention or rhetoric, and a form of devotion and service . (Poetry Foundation). By using several grammar techniques Ferrell paints a bright image for her readers to ponder upon. Ferrell is an atypical poem and uses a variety of forms to convey her simple and lyrical tone throughout them. One of the reasons that I chose her poems is because of the strong, lyrical language she uses to convey the imagery and earnest tone. Monica Ferrell s poem, Of the irresoubleness of Diamonds uses grammatical concepts such as attributive adjectives. There are three examples where Ferrell uses attributive adjectives in her poem. One example where Ferrell uses attributive adjectives is when she describes, Its delicate handle, the pictures painted there (line 3), the word delicate appears before the noun and is modifying it. Through this example Ferrell she compares her love for someone to a teacup, perhaps implying that it could be the amount of feelings she has for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Since he came to power, he has ordered at least three hundred and forty people to death. One hundred and forty of these people were apart of his government. Due to the executions, his people fear him. On a different topic, North Korea is the 119th largest trading economy in the world, exporting 2.83 billion dollars and importing 3.47 billion dollars. Essay on Psychological Theories of Attachment Psychological Theories of Attachment Ethological theory (The study of animal behaviour) probably the most important theory, as the ethological approach is concerned with the adaptive or survival aspect of behaviour and started with the work of Charles Darwin. Darwin himself did not come up with the idea of evolution, however what Darwin did was to explain evolution and publish it in his books Natural Selection (1858) and The Origin of Species (1859). The ideas in these books inspired Konrad Lorenz in his studies and it was Lorenz s ideas that laid the foundations for an evolutionary approach to attachment. Harlow s experiments challenged the views held by Freud who viewed attachment as being mainly a function for feeding, as Harlow showed contact and comfort to be of more importance; it is hard to prove if this is the same for human babies because of the ethics in conducting a similar experiment, however Shaffer and Emerson (1964) showed interesting similarities to Harlow. They saw that children can be attached to family members who seldom, if ever, feed them and that children who experience frequent separations from their caregivers, and also sleep alone at night, can develop a strong emotional tie with a soft toy or blanket. Shaffer and Emerson s explanation of why children attach is known as the Sensitive Responsive theory, which states Babies form attachments with those that are aware of the babies social needs and interact with them, rather than those who largely ignore them, except when they are crying. Analysis Of The Torrance Refinery With 25 Safety Violations In an earlier report, Cal/OSHA had previously cited the Torrance refinery with 25 safety violations in November 2014 (Kenealy, 2015). Following the explosion, workers at the refinery voiced their concerns over these past and present violations and even conducted a strike involving 7,000 employees across 15 refineries. The strike was intended to bring awareness to the occupational hazards created by ExxonMobil s failed safety protocols and procedures. By not addressing these problems earlier when these violations were identified, incidents like the Torrance explosion could perhaps be resolved before they become troublesome. With new protocols in place, it is estimated by the EPA that ExxonMobil will spend up to $20 million to upgrade their existing storage units for wastewater to prevent future contamination of the environment (Fowler, 2013). State courts have also come down on ExxonMobil for not adhering to environmental codes. ExxonMobil agreed to pay $225 million to the state of New Jersey after it was found that its Linden and Bayonne refineries had been polluting the surrounding environment (Snow, 2015). The case initially brought forth an $8.9 billion lawsuit against ExxonMobil for polluting wetlands and bodies of water, but was negotiated and eventually settled between the two parties (Dawsey, 2015). While the financial impact of this lawsuit is clear, it is also important to note that these standards exist to protect the welfare of ecosystems and the people and animals who live in them. Government regulation has been shown to be strict in these matters and the result is a crushing economic loss for ExxonMobil. Moreover, ExxonMobil loses credibility in these regions as residents are made aware of the environmental damages happening in their own backyards. Ernest Hemingway was an intricate and dedicated writer who devoted a significant portion of his life to writing multiple genres of stories. Throughout his stories, the similarities in his style and technique are easily noted and identified. Two of the short stories he wrote contain themes and motifs that specifically explain the plotline. The first story, The Snows of Kilimanjaro, sets its scene in the depths of a desolate area in Africa, where the main characters, Harry and his wife, decide to make their home. After living there for a few years, Harry ventures out and falls into a thorn bush, thus infecting his leg with gangrene. The Short, Happy Life of Francis Macomber also contains the theme of arduous moral situations for the characters. Margot, the wife of Francis, is challenged by the temptation to have relations with their tour guide. Eventually, she commits the crime of adultery, and her husband finds out about her crime and is deeply shaken. Well, why doesn t he keep his wife where she belongs? What does he think I am, a bloody plaster saint? Let him keep her where she belongs. It s his own fault (Hemingway 13). By the tone of Wilson thoughts, it is inferred that he is not able to find fault in himself and decides to blame it on the most vulnerable person, Francis. In spite of Wilson being the only man to blame for this whole incident, Margot can also take part of the blame. She appears to be a faithful and caring wife, but her actions do not justify this statement. As stated in Short Stories for Students: The phrase well kept is particularly revealing in its multiple meanings. On one hand, Margot is fashionable and presents herself well. Furthermore, she is kept by her husband in a state of luxurious affluence. Ironically, she is not well kept by her husband at all, as she freely and unapologetically commits adultery. • 12. Presumed Innocent Essay Presumed Innocent Innocent until proven guilty has been an important mantra in US law. The burden of proof remains on the prosecution to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the accused is guilty. This principle guides the premise that wrongly accusing the incident is a greater harm than not punishing the guilty, and sets a clean slate to build on in the minds of the Judge and jury. Additionally, this principle protects from unreasonable accusations assuming that significant evidence must be present first. Opposite of this philosophy would be guilty until proven innocent. In societies following this philosophy the accused must jump through hurdles to prove they are indeed innocent. Imagine, for example, you come home after a long day, flop down on the couch and fall asleep watching TV. Suddenly, bursting into the room comes the police, arresting you for robbing the convenience store down the street. As seen in the movie Presumed Innocent the lead character, Rozat Sabich, was charged with a highly publicized murder. Being a public figure in the midst of an election, his arrest was publicized heavily in the media. As the story leaked out, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Locklear III claims that global climate change is the most imposing threat in the Pacific Ocean rather than military threats found from other countries. This piece of information from Admiral Locklear deserves the attention of the American people, because the Admiral is putting global climate change and its effects ahead of the safety of the American people from other military powers/threats. Admiral Locklear s claim is flawed for these reasons: he is neglecting current affairs with nuclear threats from North Korea, conflict between China/Japan, and he is putting the safety of the American people second to helping other countries from the threat of global climate change. According to Admiral Locklear, global climate change in the Pacific Ocean is a much more daunting threat to the U.S. military based in the Pacific, rather than other military threats. Locklear states that climate change will, cripple the security environment, probably more likely than the other scenarios we all often talk about. The Admiral also mentions how the Pacific Ocean and the long term threats to the peace of East Asia, is found at the center of the Obama administration s defense strategy, and that protecting these regions from climate change threats should be the top priority. The tertiary structure is overall a three dimensional shape of a protein molecule. It will bend and twist to achieve maximum stability. The shape of a tertiary structure is made when the secondary structure folds in on itself and is held in place by many bonds and interactions formed by the R groups in the amino acid chain. The bonds and interactions involved are hydrogen bonds, ionic bonds, hydrophobic interactions and disulphide bonds. These bonds and interactions are located in different areas of the tertiary structure, the hydrogen bonds are located inbetween polar R groups, ionic bonds are located between charged R groups, hydrophobic interactions are located between nonpolar R groups and disulphide bonds are formed generally in the endoplasmic reticulum by oxidation . Hydrogen bonds may form between different side chain groups. Hydrophobic interactions are brought about in an aqueous site. The tertiary structure is held together mainly by interactions that are located at the R groups. A protein with a tertiary structure could be a myoglobin protein. It is this part of the human condition that makes us feel as though we must forge ties with something outside of ourselves in order to establish a strong sense of existence and a clear understanding of who we are. • 35. Oozing Hegemonic Masculinity in the Super Bowl Commercials Many of us watch the Super Bowl to check out what we expect to be the most innovative and entertaining commercials of the year. Given the grand stage on which these commercials air, it is important that we analyze them in their proper context. Remember, this is a sporting event, one in which only men are allowed to participate (as athletes/coaches), where violent collisions are celebrated, and where most of the audience is male. Considering these gendered parameters, we should not be surprised that many of the 2012 Super Bowl commercials ooze hegemonic masculinity. In this post David Mayeda explores how a masculinity can be used to opress men and women alike. Back in 1987, Raewyn Connell coined the term hegemonic masculinity in a seminal text, Gender Power. Hegemonic masculinity refers to the dominant form of masculinity that exists within a particular culture. Relative to this ever changing, idealized form of masculinity are different subordinated masculinities those within a culture that do not live up to the so called masculine gold standard. Put simply, there are real men and then there are all other men. In watching the 2012 Super Bowl commercials, we can see versions of hegemonic masculinity demonstrated. Perhaps the most vivid version was seen in H M s Super Bowl ad, utilizing soccer (futbol) star, David Beckham: Tattooed, rugged, athletic, showcasing a lean musculature and menacing glare, Beckham embodies a hegemonic masculinity that would surely resonate ... The period in history directly influences the style and genre of music. For example, in the mid 1930 s, during the Great Depression, Swing music became one of the most popular genres of music, because it created an upbeat vibe, which created pleasure and happiness that hadn t been felt due to the Great Depression. What one does with this knowledge of oppression and privilege is that person s version of feminism. After reading Tong (2009) on various feminist theories, I have come to see the different feminist theories in a continuum of the feminist movement. Therefore, these theories cannot be boxed into clear cut categories that share nothing in common with each other. I will attempt to formulate my own feminist theory using the previous works of feminist scholars as my foundation. In order to explain the application of this theory, I will illuminate a feminist issue. Further, I will present ways to tackle the problem and provide limitations of my theory. My feminist theory ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Through colonization and globalization this system of domination seeks to convert the more egalitarian societies. An example of this spread of domination is the white settler s attitude towards conquering and taming the nature, which was forcefully embedded in the Native American culture. I am interested in exploring how the foundation of the issue, which is tied to women s sexuality, plays out in the colonial context. To examine this, I will look at the institution of marriage and prove that it is a form of patriarchal colonization of women. When I talk about colonization of women, the colonizer is not the western world but patriarchy. However, to make connections with colonization, I frequently use the example of White Western colonizers (Europe) against the dark skinned Third World dwellers (Americas, Africa, Asia and Oceania). Although marriage, wedding ceremonies, and other rituals related to marriage varies from culture and/or geographic location, for sake of simplicity I will look at a marriage system of monogamy between a man and a woman for life. In this system they are expected to procreate and stay together as a nuclear family. This is close to the Western system of marriage, which is seeping into many other cultures through forces of capitalism and cultural hegemony. There are subtle messages that girls at a young age get about getting married. Simone de Beauvoir wrote in the Second Sex Marriage ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
