The Power Of The House Of Representatives
Congratulations on being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. I believe you should be very
familiar with the Texas Legislature as you have served as a member of the Texas Legislature for eight
years. However, the U.S. Legislature in Washington D.C. is very different from the Texas Legislature
while having some similarities. I would like to list some of the similarities and differences between
these two legislatures to help you in the transition as the Congress has changed overtime and thus, to
help develop your Home Style. The modern Congress is a reformed Congress (Shaw, 2015:2). The
power of the House of Representative was held in the hand of the Speaker in the early 1900s.
However, a resolution was introduced by George Norris after leading the progressive Republicans and
Democrats into a revolt against Joe Cannon, the Speaker, in 1910. The power was moved to the hands
of the committee chairs, which were determined by seniority, after the revolt. (Shaw, 2015:3). The
seniority system was challenged in the 1950s and 1960s. As a result, a greater role was placed on the
Speaker of the House and the majority party on determining the assignment of the committee chairs.
Moreover, the sub committees had also become more important in the legislature. Later in the late
1960s and early 1970s, the wages of the Congress members and the number of staff had increased as a
result of becoming more professionalized . The franking privilege, the privilege of sending certain

The Use of Literary Techniques in Robert Frost s Stopping...
Robert Frost s, Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening tells a story of a man and his horse who are
walking in the woods that are possibly owned by someone the man knows. Snow falls softly from the
sky and the woods are silent. He mentions that the horse does not want to stop with him without a
reason. The only sound audible is the horse s bell that jingles around his neck. Snow makes a
sweeping sound in the wind around them. The man wants to stay and enjoy the peacefulness, but
realizes that he must get back to his responsibilities. The theme of this poem is the simplicity of nature
and how alluring it can be. To be able to enjoy such a scenery and not have obligations is the man s
dream, but reality quickly reminds him of his responsibilities. Frost uses symbols, allegorical
meanings, and metaphors to help reveal the theme of his poem; that duties and responsibilities limit
people from being able to do the things they love sometimes. The most important symbol in Frost s
poem is the woods which are lovely, dark, and deep (13). and are very seducing to the reader. These
woods are tempting the man to stay and enjoy them. One could interpret this as a longing to lay down
in the woods to a deep, dark sleep and never wake up, possibly death. The man stops with his horse in
these woods and watches them fill up with snow (4). In relation to the theme, the woods confirm the
simplicity of nature and all its wonder. Another symbol in this poem is the horse s bells that

Lottery Narrative Story
The morning of April 1st was sunny and bright; the ground was moist and flowers of vibrant colors
were blooming. The olive green trees were swaying in a gentle breeze and the river by the village was
teeming with fish. A rainbow glowed against the blue sky, catching every villagers attention. The
villagers of Shiveria had begun to assemble at the center of the village where the annual lottery was
being held. Because of the town s small population of 400 people, the lottery would probably take less
than 3 hours. The children ran from their homes, as they had the day off from school because of the
lottery. Bryan McCabe, a boy about 13, collected stones and filled up his entire backpack with them.
When they reached the village center, they placed all their rocks in a neat pyramid next to the broken
down church. Behind everyone stood Mr. Krahzi, silently watching from the back. He had participated
in the lottery for over 65 years, yet had never won again since his son Alex won 25 years ago. After
his 14 year old son won, he realized the faults of the lottery and begged everyone to stop the tradition,
but nobody listened. Everyone called him insane for wanting to stop the lottery and claimed he was
betraying every tradition they had. He realized it was no use trying to protest and became quiet but
deep inside he still silently despised the lottery. Soon, Mr. Falls, the mayor of the village, took out a
five legged wooden stool and placed it on a

On the Origin of Species
In his On the Origin of Species, written in 1859, Charles Darwin clearly explained the gradual
progression toward the speciation of organisms with his five main principles: variation, inheritance,
competition, selection, and propagation. Darwin hesitated to publish his findings because he
understood that his findings were based on the animal kingdom and on an evolutionary process that
had to have spanned millennia. He specifically did not think that his discoveries were applicable to the
evolution of human society. Contrary to Darwin s preference, Herbert Spencer did exactly what
Darwin hoped to avoid by publishing numerous works supporting his own, new thesis of Social
Darwinism, which claimed that Darwin s principles of evolution ... Show more content on

He lived off of his family s wealth and instead of working, he devoted himself wholly to his studies. In
1896, he published his most comprehensive work, The Synthetic Philosophy, a work encompassing
many of his theories on society, evolution, morality, and psychology. Spencer died December 8, 1903
while working on his autobiography, which was then published in 1904. Through his anti clerical and
rejectionist upbringing, Spencer was raised to attach to a theory like Darwinian evolution. In his first
published article on the development of Social Darwinism, entitled The Development Hypothesis,
1852, Spencer established his lack of faith and claimed that creationism was a theory which is
supported by no facts at all. He further elaborated on the issue and asserted that there must be another
mode by which the world was created. He even went as far as to write that, if he were to interrogate
any leading geologist or physiologists they would be forced to confess that the notion was put into his
mind in childhood as part of a story which he now thinks is absurd. Spencer believed that creationism
was not a viable medium on which to base scientific thought, and as a result, he was forced to find
another way to explain the creation of the world. For this reason, he was drawn to evolutionary
Darwinism. Spencer however, could not just accept Darwinian evolution as fact. Rather, he expanded
the theory of Darwinian evolution to meet his own

A leading airline group with effective security systems and culture .
Qantas requires an organisational culture of behaviours that support its security vision, policies and
procedures. With direction from the Board, the airline has embarked on a journey to identify its
current security culture and develop a method to assess and improve the culture going forward. There
is little evidence to suggest that this has been accomplished elsewhere, particularly within aviation,
and the findings will play a key role in Qantas ability to influence regulators. The focus for this project
is on the Australian market and the 65% domestic market share, however there is evidence to suggest
that considerations will also need to be made in the new and growing Asian markets.
Qantas engaged PwC to assist them with this project. PwC consulted some 332 Qantas employees
including Executives to understand the desired future state for security culture, and a cross section of
Middle Management and the Frontline to establish the current state. Findings from Executive
conversations were largely consistent with what emerged as ideas for change from the Middle
Management and Frontline levels. Overarching themes encompassed the need for greater engagement
including collaboration and a clearer understanding as to how security culture fits into the broader
culture, specifically how security supports safety and is aligned to the brand values and desired
organisational behaviours. PwC also engaged an

The Use Of Technology In The Veldt By Ray Bradbury
In the present day of technology virtual reality is becoming a new trend. The ability to explore places
without going there for real. Ray Bradbury famous author of predictive science fiction wrote a short
story on the use of technology in such a way. The Veldt by Ray Bradbury tells the story of a family of
four, two kids and their parents. The story focuses on a piece of technology known as the nursey
which create virtual scenery for the kids, but the parents begin to suspect something wrong is going on
with it. Ray Bradbury does a fantastic job of conveying the sense of detachment of the family due to
the presence of the nursey and the house s technology. The Veldt does good job of satirizing
technology and its consequence on family interaction or human interaction in general. The family in
The Veldt from early on are shown to be distance. In the beginning scenes, the story conveys the sense
that the parents do not understand a lot about what their children are up to. Also, it seems the children
do not even need their parents whatsoever. The house in the short story does everything the Hadley
family could ever wanted and does any chores around the house for them. When the parents and
children interact for the first time in the story a sense of detachment from the parents is felt through
the children s act of hiding what has been going on in the nursey. Afterwards the parents admit that
their children do not respect or listen them. The parents also admit they are very

Robots And The Robot Robots
In the mid 1970 s second generation robots were introduced. As these robots became more advanced
they were equipped with internal sensors which gave them a major advantage over first generation
robots. This new technology gave them increased information about the world around them. Robots
use sensors to detect changes around them and to respond to their surroundings based on the
information they receive from certain sensors. There are many types of sensors that perform a variety
of tasks by transforming mechanical, heat, and light energies into electrical signals. The signals
produced by sensors communicate to the robot on how it should respond to different situations. This
gives the robot a higher sense of intelligence and adaptive skills by providing more information about
its environment. These skills allow the robot to change their manipulator location and the position of
its end effector so that it can work around obstructions in its work envelope. The robot s surroundings,
the precision needed, and what must be sensed all help decide what type of sensor must be used for
the robot. Depending on these credentials, robots could be equipped with light, optical, sound, or
temperature sensors. Light is a form of radiation that makes up a group of frequencies in the
electromagnetic spectrum that we can see. Robots can react to this form of radiation by using light
sensors. Light sensors respond to variations in light energy by applying many types of opto electronic

In 2002, the Swedish Conscripts study reported an increased risk of schizophrenia in individuals who
used cannabis (Zammit et al, 2002). In addition, the simultaneous presentation of cannabis use and
depressive symptoms is relatively common (Zammit et al, 2002). Habitually, cannabis becomes either
a form of substance abuse or a form of self medication. One research study hypothesized that cannabis
increases levels of interferongamma, which inhibits the activity of aromatase, the enzyme that
converts androgens to estrogen. This in turn creates a deficiency in estrogen, a hormone that augments
the synthesis of serotonin, thereby creating a deficiency in serotonin characteristic of major depression
and suicide (Bovasso, 2001). To paraphrase, cannabis results in lowers serotonin levels in an indivudal
and serotonin is necessary for happiness and thwarting depression. Zammit et al (2002) went on to
further assert that not only is the use of cannabis in early adulthood associated with an increased risk
of developing schizophrenia; this risk rises with increasing frequency of cannabis use. The largest risk
was seen in subjects reporting use of cannabis on more than 50 occasions (Zammit et al, 2002).
Furthermore, there was no association between cannabis and other psychotic illnesses, which implies
that cannabis has a rather specific association with an increased risk of schizophrenia (Zammit et al,

Increasing Taxes In America
According to Ron Paul, one thing is clear: The Founding Fathers never intended a nation. Where
citizens would pay nearly half of everything they earn to the government. Could you risk the down fall
on not only hurting others, but yourself as well. Not being able to handle the people complaints their
sacrifice and the hurt of their family, but also their job pay rate and not being able sleep at night. On
the debating of increasing taxes, it would not go as well a lot people will have bumping roads to go
through. Many people and business would be going through a lot of stress about what is going to
happen today or tomorrow. ... But in this word nothing can be said to be certain except death and taxes

personally have been hurt by taxes. I have went to the bank looked at the large amount on my check,
but I received less. Would you want to see people lying on the ground late nights and mornings
through bad weather? It could be your family hurt or even you. Newman states, Rich or poor and all
do right, for nobody owes public duty to pay more than the laws demand (1). Visualize how the world
would be then. People would then start war between one another. Taking other people things would be
so powerful. No one would understand the world we would live in. Killing would then be a big
prohibit, think about the elders some cannot receive their income. They would not have any help
paying hospital bills, or cannot get their treatments. By any means, this shows no matter which you
are taxes could hurt you. Income taxes would be lower for people, and it would not be as high it is
today. When taxes hurt people, it that means it is hurting you too. On the other hand, hurting the
country is another way taxes could hurt. Taxes hurt the country by increasing the interest rate. The
country will be falling, and the states will feel as they are in war. Pologeogis says to avoid taxation in
more than one location or country, businesses do careful tax planning that takes into consideration no
country taxation (1). Countries would not be able to get as much done and paid for, prices would go
up and people would be able to get as much. The country will then have to focus on whether the high
should be taxed a higher or low rate then they are today. Also the argument of high rates is that income
inequality would be at extremely high levels and by then the government will be focus on
redistribution. In many words Helvering stated , anyone may so arrange his affairs that his taxes shall

William Domhoff s Who Rules America Essay
Reading G. William Domhoff s Who Rules America?: The Triumph of the Corporate Rich was an
intriguing and challenging experience for me. My limited knowledge base of the American political

corporate elite and how they stay in power.
I found the book to be extremely well researched. When Domhoff presents a point, he uses several
sources and logical reasons to back up his theory. For example, when relating the dominance of the
political elite on the government, Domhoff examines the amount of influence the corporate rich have
in our judicial system by investigating the nine Supreme Court judges during the Obama
administration. He discovered that all of them graduated from one of three elite institutions: Harvard,
Yale, or Columbia (Domhoff, 178, 2014). Domhoff treats most of his assertions in a similar fashion;
he uses extensive research backs up his claims. The book explains the

Control The Mind And You Control Their Behavior
As stated by T. Blauer, Control the mind and you control the behavior . This quote is relevant because
it applies to the way people behave when they know they are being watched. Body cameras are small
camcorders law enforcement officers wear with their uniform. Evidence given by body cameras can
help defend an officer and his or her job. Citizens will also be benefitted and protected. As a result,
officer behavior and work ethic can be refined. Despite the advantages of body cameras, opposition is
at hand due to privacy concerns. Police officers should be required to wear body cameras to protect
citizens and themselves. Body cameras can protect officers jobs and reputation. When police wear
body cameras, there are less allegations filed. Studies have shown that both officers and the public
behave better when they know they are being observed. Therefore, there is greater police
accountability and less citizen liability. In Rialto, California, a study on police worn cameras was
conducted for 12 months. The results of the study show an 88% drop in complaints since body
cameras had been in use. (Kalin) Police brutality can be disproved. If an encounter is caught on
camera, there is no point for an individual to accuse an officer of misconduct. In the Burton v. Taylor
case, the man claimed that the officer used a Taser on him without reason. However, the incident was
caught on camera, showing the man resisting arrest, therefore discrediting the man s story and

Daily Formative Assessment
I believe assessment is important and is the basis of planning for instruction, whether it is diagnostic
prior to learning, formative during units or lessons, or summative to evaluate student learning. Rowan
s quote in Every Teacher s Guide to Assessment, After all, in the end, the problem is less the idea of
testing itself, but how we design them, apply, them, and make use of their data. definitely has an
impact on my assessment practices. I feel it is necessary to make sure the student acquires all aspects
of the learning. Assessment should be used to bring a value for students. Within my instruction, I
implement daily formative assessments which may include turn and share, quick writes, graphic
organizers, online discussion responses, KahootIt, and other forms. Designing the appropriate
formative assessment to match the lesson is important to assess how the learning is taught and whether
the students are showing progress. In addition, I have worked on building blocks of formative
assessments in checklist style leading up to the point of reviewing for a summative test. Each of these
are checked off as completed and instant feedback is given. Feedback from an assessment is essential
to student learning and how a teacher will ensure the content is being acquired. ... Show more content

Health Information Exchange Analysis
Health information exchange (HIE) delivers information when and where it is needed to provide
improvements in healthcare quality and efficiency. HIE requires essential coding standards throughout
health information management so that information can be accessed, merged, divided and/or shared
with other healthcare organizations. In order to reach interoperability; message, exchange, and
terminological standards are a few key attributes needed. HL7 v2, CDA and RxNorm aid in reaching
these standards to achieve HIE. Standards are important because it facilitates good representation of
data and interoperability across systems. It also creates consistency in how we represent data. A large
portion of utilizing data is around data management and clean up because data is inconsistently
represented. The HL7 v2 standard helps achieve data standardization by having required segments in
messages met so that all relevant information delivered can be interpreted clearly by the receiving
party. HL7 v2 messages use a non XML syntax that is based on segments separated by one character
delimiters. While not all segments are required, it is pertinent to have agreed on relevant segments,

Business Structures
There are a variety of different business structures that comprise the market in the world today. The
most common ones found in the business world today are sole proprietorships, partnerships, and
corporations. From these you will also find monopolies and oligopolies. Economists assume there are
a number of different buyers and sellers in the market which leads to competition which allows prices
to change in response to changes in supply and demand.(1) In many industries you there are
substitutes for products, so if one type of product becomes too expensive the consumer can choose an
alternative product that is cheaper, or one of better quality. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

However, the goods and services sold on eBay can be considered perfectly competitive. There is a
multitude of buyers, or producers, and consumers have options with substitutes. Most of the products
sold within their category are similar and for the quality of the product, they are typically within the
same price range of one another, and each individual seller chooses their price based on other similar
goods sold on the site. Ebay, as a company itself, fits more in the category of an oligopoly, which is
actually pretty common in any market. Other alternative websites include Yahoo!, Amazon, and
Quibids, but there are only a small number of them, certainly not hundreds as in monopolistic
competition. Also, eBay is interdependent on the few other auction website companies, competing
with the fees they charge, as well as quality of customer support, and buyer/seller reliability. Another
characteristic of eBay that coincides with it being considered an oligopoly is the fact that it has
numerous entry barriers. It s such a large company with many restrictions, and it would be hard for an
up and coming substitute auction website to break into the market and compete with eBay or the other
top companies in the industry. (6) Weird Al Yankovic, through his humor, gives a pretty accurate
description of how eBay works. Though obviously made as a joke, it

Don John Villain Essay
At first glance the character Don John resembles a traditional villain. Miriam Webster defines a villain
as, a cruelly malicious person who is involved in or devoted to wickedness or crime , but does this
truly define the psyche of Don John? As a bastard, or an illegitimate son, Don John has always been
out of the spotlight, portrayed as an idea of someone who doesn t belong in a natural heir decent. In
reality though, Don John is one of the only people in the play that shows a vulnerable, honest
reflection of himself. In a scene he confesses to Conrad that, [he] cannot hide what [he is]. [he] must
be sad / when [he has] cause, and smile at no man s jests; eat when [he has] / stomach, and wait for no

Development Of The Residential School System

beadwork or something. I stop all the sudden and tears just start coming down
: A quote from Aggie George recalling of her experience in the Lejac Indian Residential School
(Legacy of Hope Foundation, 2001). In the 1880s all the way to the 1990 s roughly 150,000 aboriginal
children where removed from their communities and homes to attend the residential school system set
up by the government and operated by the Christian churches (Government of Canada, 2015). The
purpose of these residential schools was to isolate Aboriginal children from their families and
assimilate them into the dominant culture (First Nations Study Program, 2009). As the history of the
residential school system unfolds it becomes evident that the Canadian Government attempted to
eradicate the Aboriginals culture and lifestyle. The residential school system was a devastating crime
against Aboriginal cultures and has had lasting and debilitating effects on their populations.
The residential schools were a wide spread school system that was established by the Canadian
government and organized by the Christian churches (Government of Canada, 2015). The goal of
these schools was to educate Aboriginal children in Christianity and to adapt them into mainstream
society. The children in these schools were forced to abandon their heritage, and were separated from
their families. The aboriginal school is system was

Building Ventilation Systems
Ventilations Systems Introduction Millions of Americans work in buildings with mechanical heating,
ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems which have been designed to provide air at
comfortable levels of temperature and humidity. Most never worry about harmful concentrations of air
pollutants that may exist in the air they breathe. While heating and cooling are basic operations, the
more complex processes involved in ventilation are paramount in ensuring high quality indoor air.
Ventilation is much more than air flowing throughout a building. Most ventilation systems introduce
outdoor air, condition it by mingling it with portions of indoor air and then distributing the resulting
combined air throughout the building, usually dispelling small portion outside of the building
structure. If any part of the process is inadequate or faulty, the quality of indoor air may be
jeopardized and can result in harmful toxins or pollutants circulating in enclosed spaces where they
can pose health risks. Ventilation, either natural or mechanical, is an effective approach to providing
acceptable indoor air. General ventilation of a building is needed to satisfy the respiratory needs of its
occupants and to remove any body odors and tobacco smoke, should smoking be permitted. On a
more serious level, systems that are improperly operated or maintained have been known to contribute
to sick building syndrome (SBS); SBS has physical symptoms without clearly recognizable causes.

How Jaws devoured its way to being Hollywood s first summer blockbuster villain.
Over the years the villain has had to move with the times, but there was one villain created that made
history for he not only devoured his way, sweeping away other villains that were ruling over the box
office, but paved the term summer movie blockbuster . That villain would be Jaws. Back in 1975 Jaws

Emotional Intelligence In Healthcare Leaders
Daniel Goleman an author and phycologist once cited that if our emotional abilities aren t in hand and
we do not possess self awareness as well as not able to manage our distressing emotions and if we can

to get very far(Goleman, 1995).
Harnessing ones emotions is having emotional intelligence. Emotional Intelligence is the capability to

concentrating on results and make them adaptable to change.
Emotional Intelligence has affected leaders in making them actual change agents which is a key

Gender And The Media By Rosalind Gill
Book Review of Gender and the Media by Rosalind Gill
Gender and the Media by Rosalind Gill addresses gender stereotypes that are brought onto women and
men through the media resulting in objectification and subjectification. Gill discusses how the
representation of gender is altered as a result of the media in Western societies. Gender and the Media
is aimed to address the rapid transmission of media and how those changes affect the construction of
feminine and masculine gender roles in society. Gill uses her interest in the contradictions of gender
construction by society, to analyze gender and the media. Using feminism as a backbone for her
research, Gill and many commentators support the idea that feminist ideas are common and may even
affect the media. Gender and the Media addresses multiple forms of media: postfeminism in
advertising, gender in the news and journalism, and gender in magazines. Gild aims to address the
construction of gender representations, elements for gender analysis, and feminist culture with Gender
and the Media.
The first section of Gender and the Media addresses gender representations and the beginning of
feminism. During the late 60 s and early 70 s, women s rights movements were first introduced with
the challenge of the media, prompting them monitor the way the media portrayed women. This
portrayal starting in the late 1970 s has seen many transmissions since. Gil states: I use the term

Sikh Diet Research Paper
Another important Sikh ideal is that we should not eat things that result from the killing of an animal.
It is not correct however to say that the Sikh diet is a vegan diet. It is adequate to eat or drink
something that an animal produces but it is not adequate to eat or drink something that comes from the
killing of an animal or living being in general. In the Siri Guru Granth Sahib it says, Whosoever takes
Marijuana, fish and alcoholic drinks; all his pilgrimages, fasts and performance of religious practices

One way the caste system is abolished is through langar. Langar is the free kitchen and dinning hall, or
other provision for serving meals that must be attached to the Gurdwaras. The purpose was to clearly
eliminate caste on the territory of the Gurdwara and so to eliminate it as either as a means or a
hindrance to liberation (Mcleod 121). A Sikh practice in which everyone sits down on the floor
together and takes part in eating langar together is seen at all Gurdwaras. This is an important Sikh
practice because it allows everyone to sit at one level and eat the same meal. No one person is higher
than another and that is the goal of this practice as mentioned. Sikhism focuses largely on equality and
today it is still seen that equality in all is not seen. Sikhs fight for equality as a whole in America
especially after the 9/11 attacks but there is a lack of equality seen in the Sikh diaspora itself. For
example many of the Sikhs still believe in the caste system. This is especially seen in marriage. A lot

We often forget where our food comes from and how much time and energy goes into what we eat.
Our awareness doesn t stray far from grocery stores and their orderly aisles of products ready for

Quotes About Moral Courage

Moral courage. An ambiguous word used to describe the purpose of taking action for moral reasons
despite the risk of adverse consequences. Without us knowing, our moral courage is being challenged
each and every day in situations like being honest at the risk of criticism, or standing up for what you
believe in spite of being judged by other people. One s actions may be influenced by the opinions of
other people around them, hence why it can be challenging to gather up enough moral courage to

A Rainbow Comes After The Storm Short Story
A Rainbow Comes After the Storm
Newaygo, Michigan, a small, little, suburban town north of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Their tubing and
rafting was a hotspot for families to spend quality time together. I was part of one of them. I was filled
with excitement. While we were waiting in line, we were cracking jokes and having a good time.
Group number 43, head your way to the pink bus! the announcer called. My family of 7 got onto the

crisp, and clear water as I imagined. Then, the bus began to shake as the bus driver announced through

The bridge, the bridge, the bridge. I kept on repeating that in my head so I would not forget. Suddenly,
everyone started clapping. It was finally time to get off. Preet and I rushed to get the tubes for
everyone in our family, and some twine to attach it. We were filled with excitement. Time flew by, and
we were finally on the dock. We got our tubes tied up, and went into the water. The sun was shining

author, but he wasn t always so successful all the time he had to start from the ground up. The very
first church he used to preach at only had ten members that grew to about fifty, but in a few years those
fifty members expanded to millions of people and he transformed that small amount of people of fifty
to a multi million dollar ministry. Someone ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His ministry is an example of how all churches should be or strive to be, and if you haven t noticed
Sunday is the most segregated day of the week but he has done a great job of not letting that be the
case for his church and he did this just by being his natural self. The people liked what they were
receiving from him and he didn t have to change who he was they adjusted to him. Of course all of
these accomplishments he could not have done on his own but with the Grace of God and the
guidance from his parents that he had as a young child helped him to become the man he is today. This
all goes back to who influenced him and with the traits he received from his father of being a hard
worker and having that drive of determination. With this he would be able to work through obstacles
and roadblocks and he was able to push past whatever he went through because of that influence that
his father had on him and that played a part of where he was headed in life. Another contribution to
this was his mother s teachings and lessons that helped him to navigate through life and be the
successful man he is and she played a big part in this also because without her giving him the wisdom
and the word of God he wouldn t be where he is at today including his high social status. When his
parents put him in a good environment and placed him around the church at a very young age they
probably didn t know but they were really preparing him for his destiny in life. The latest book he has
written was in 2017 called Soar!: Build Your Vision from the Ground Up and in this inspirational book
he uses examples and life lessons from his own life and personal experiences for entrepreneurs to have
the mindset of a business owner. He furthermore explains that his father had a very huge impact on

Nathan s View Of Justice In The Poisonwood Bible
In a novel by William Styron, a father tells his son that life is a search for justice. In
The Poisonwood Bible, a novel written by Barbara Kingsolver, the father in the novel, Nathan
Price, has a significant view of justice and pursues justice through earthly punishments. Nathan s
religious view of justice ultimately leads to his constant misfortunes, the dissolving of his family, his
shame for his family, and contributes to the novel as a whole.
Through his many experiences in The Poisonwood Bible, Nathan Price developed his own personal
view of justice by retribution. Nathan s company died, to the man, on the Death
March from Bataan... But he would not be back, so far as those boys in Bataan were concerned, and
neither would the soldier boy I d married. He came home ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Book Three: The Judges. The Poisonwood Bible: A Novel. New York: Harper
Perennial Modern Classics, 2005. 197. Print). This change in character shows that Nathan feels guilty
of escaping the Bataan Death March by sheer chance while his friends were subject to the certain
death that awaited, therefore making Nathan feel like a coward and therefore subjected to being
punished by God. My father woke up the next morning with a horrible rash on his hands and arms,
presumably by the plant that bites... He bellowed when Mother tried to apply the
Gustafson 2
salve. I ask you, how did I earn this? we heard him roar... Ow! Great God almighty, Orleanna.
How did this curse come to me, when it s God s own will to cultivate the soil! (Kingsolver,
Barbara. Book One: Genesis. The Poisonwood Bible: A Novel. New York: Harper Perennial
Modern Classics, 2005. 41. Print). This shows that Nathan Price believes that justice comes in the
form of earthly punishment by God, and that all of his misfortunes are a result of him disappointing
God. This idea that all of his punishment and misfortunes come from disappointing
God causes Nathan Price to become more buried into his broken and judgmental view of

Una s Search for Religion in Naslund s Novel, Ahab s Wife
Herman Melville s Moby Dick is a novel filled with references to the Bible and God. In writing Ahab
s Wife, Sena Naslund could not ignore Melville s biblical allusions. Naslund s novel is a reaction to
Moby Dick, and therefore Una does not accept Melville s omnipresent religion. She cannot bring
herself to belief in the basic tenants of Christianity, and is constantly searching for a new community,
or philosophy that will embrace her ideals. Una is on a journey and her quest is to find a religion that
suits her life and her experiences.
Brought up in Kentucky by a fanatical father who is determined to force her to believe in his religion,
Una has is repulsed by his beliefs. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And here was a road that went off at right angles, that could bend and double back, that was open to
whatever sheep might wander into it (338). She appreciates the unconventional because she is not a
typical person, or leading a normal life. Margaret Fuller later introduces Una to Transcendentalism,
which is more like a philosophy than a religion, but that Una finds even better than Unitarianism.
As the novel continues, and Una endures more tragedy and experiences more, her search changes. At
first she views the lighthouse as God in the microcosm of her island. She and Frannie idolize the
lighthouse and worship it, I allowed Frannie to kiss the lichen crusted stone with her lips, as though he
were an holy icon, the mighty thighbone of God, and I stood beside her and sang a hymn, such as they
sang in my father s church, God of Wisdom, God of Power, changing the words to suit me: Sign of
Safety, Sign of Silence, Sing we to Thy Speaking of the Light, and thanked him many times for his
palpable being (44). Here Una can relate the lighthouse to God because it is tangible, and earthly. She
does not have to picture some abstract being, or create dogmas to accompany it, the lighthouse is
merely a great object that represents a higher power. Una then begins to see God elsewhere. When she
goes to Boston with her family, she sees religious icons in a shop, I imaged and prayed to them

  • 2. The Power Of The House Of Representatives Congratulations on being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. I believe you should be very familiar with the Texas Legislature as you have served as a member of the Texas Legislature for eight years. However, the U.S. Legislature in Washington D.C. is very different from the Texas Legislature while having some similarities. I would like to list some of the similarities and differences between these two legislatures to help you in the transition as the Congress has changed overtime and thus, to help develop your Home Style. The modern Congress is a reformed Congress (Shaw, 2015:2). The power of the House of Representative was held in the hand of the Speaker in the early 1900s. However, a resolution was introduced by George Norris after leading the progressive Republicans and Democrats into a revolt against Joe Cannon, the Speaker, in 1910. The power was moved to the hands of the committee chairs, which were determined by seniority, after the revolt. (Shaw, 2015:3). The seniority system was challenged in the 1950s and 1960s. As a result, a greater role was placed on the Speaker of the House and the majority party on determining the assignment of the committee chairs. Moreover, the sub committees had also become more important in the legislature. Later in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the wages of the Congress members and the number of staff had increased as a result of becoming more professionalized . The franking privilege, the privilege of sending certain matter ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. The Use of Literary Techniques in Robert Frost s Stopping... Robert Frost s, Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening tells a story of a man and his horse who are walking in the woods that are possibly owned by someone the man knows. Snow falls softly from the sky and the woods are silent. He mentions that the horse does not want to stop with him without a reason. The only sound audible is the horse s bell that jingles around his neck. Snow makes a sweeping sound in the wind around them. The man wants to stay and enjoy the peacefulness, but realizes that he must get back to his responsibilities. The theme of this poem is the simplicity of nature and how alluring it can be. To be able to enjoy such a scenery and not have obligations is the man s dream, but reality quickly reminds him of his responsibilities. Frost uses symbols, allegorical meanings, and metaphors to help reveal the theme of his poem; that duties and responsibilities limit people from being able to do the things they love sometimes. The most important symbol in Frost s poem is the woods which are lovely, dark, and deep (13). and are very seducing to the reader. These woods are tempting the man to stay and enjoy them. One could interpret this as a longing to lay down in the woods to a deep, dark sleep and never wake up, possibly death. The man stops with his horse in these woods and watches them fill up with snow (4). In relation to the theme, the woods confirm the simplicity of nature and all its wonder. Another symbol in this poem is the horse s bells that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Lottery Narrative Story The morning of April 1st was sunny and bright; the ground was moist and flowers of vibrant colors were blooming. The olive green trees were swaying in a gentle breeze and the river by the village was teeming with fish. A rainbow glowed against the blue sky, catching every villagers attention. The villagers of Shiveria had begun to assemble at the center of the village where the annual lottery was being held. Because of the town s small population of 400 people, the lottery would probably take less than 3 hours. The children ran from their homes, as they had the day off from school because of the lottery. Bryan McCabe, a boy about 13, collected stones and filled up his entire backpack with them. When they reached the village center, they placed all their rocks in a neat pyramid next to the broken down church. Behind everyone stood Mr. Krahzi, silently watching from the back. He had participated in the lottery for over 65 years, yet had never won again since his son Alex won 25 years ago. After his 14 year old son won, he realized the faults of the lottery and begged everyone to stop the tradition, but nobody listened. Everyone called him insane for wanting to stop the lottery and claimed he was betraying every tradition they had. He realized it was no use trying to protest and became quiet but deep inside he still silently despised the lottery. Soon, Mr. Falls, the mayor of the village, took out a five legged wooden stool and placed it on a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

On the Origin of Species In his On the Origin of Species, written in 1859, Charles Darwin clearly explained the gradual progression toward the speciation of organisms with his five main principles: variation, inheritance, competition, selection, and propagation. Darwin hesitated to publish his findings because he understood that his findings were based on the animal kingdom and on an evolutionary process that had to have spanned millennia. He specifically did not think that his discoveries were applicable to the evolution of human society. Contrary to Darwin s preference, Herbert Spencer did exactly what Darwin hoped to avoid by publishing numerous works supporting his own, new thesis of Social Darwinism, which claimed that Darwin s principles of evolution ... In 1896, he published his most comprehensive work, The Synthetic Philosophy, a work encompassing many of his theories on society, evolution, morality, and psychology. Spencer died December 8, 1903 while working on his autobiography, which was then published in 1904. Through his anti clerical and rejectionist upbringing, Spencer was raised to attach to a theory like Darwinian evolution. In his first published article on the development of Social Darwinism, entitled The Development Hypothesis, 1852, Spencer established his lack of faith and claimed that creationism was a theory which is supported by no facts at all. He further elaborated on the issue and asserted that there must be another mode by which the world was created. He even went as far as to write that, if he were to interrogate any leading geologist or physiologists they would be forced to confess that the notion was put into his mind in childhood as part of a story which he now thinks is absurd. Spencer believed that creationism was not a viable medium on which to base scientific thought, and as a result, he was forced to find another way to explain the creation of the world. For this reason, he was drawn to evolutionary Darwinism. Spencer however, could not just accept Darwinian evolution as fact. Rather, he expanded the theory of Darwinian evolution to meet his own ... Qantas requires an organisational culture of behaviours that support its security vision, policies and procedures. With direction from the Board, the airline has embarked on a journey to identify its current security culture and develop a method to assess and improve the culture going forward. There is little evidence to suggest that this has been accomplished elsewhere, particularly within aviation, and the findings will play a key role in Qantas ability to influence regulators. The focus for this project is on the Australian market and the 65% domestic market share, however there is evidence to suggest that considerations will also need to be made in the new and growing Asian markets. Qantas engaged PwC to assist them with this project. PwC consulted some 332 Qantas employees including Executives to understand the desired future state for security culture, and a cross section of Middle Management and the Frontline to establish the current state. Findings from Executive conversations were largely consistent with what emerged as ideas for change from the Middle Management and Frontline levels. The Veldt by Ray Bradbury tells the story of a family of four, two kids and their parents. The story focuses on a piece of technology known as the nursey which create virtual scenery for the kids, but the parents begin to suspect something wrong is going on with it. Ray Bradbury does a fantastic job of conveying the sense of detachment of the family due to the presence of the nursey and the house s technology. The Veldt does good job of satirizing technology and its consequence on family interaction or human interaction in general. The family in The Veldt from early on are shown to be distance. In the beginning scenes, the story conveys the sense that the parents do not understand a lot about what their children are up to. Also, it seems the children do not even need their parents whatsoever. The house in the short story does everything the Hadley family could ever wanted and does any chores around the house for them. • 18. Robots And The Robot Robots In the mid 1970 s second generation robots were introduced. As these robots became more advanced they were equipped with internal sensors which gave them a major advantage over first generation robots. This new technology gave them increased information about the world around them. Robots use sensors to detect changes around them and to respond to their surroundings based on the information they receive from certain sensors. There are many types of sensors that perform a variety of tasks by transforming mechanical, heat, and light energies into electrical signals. The signals produced by sensors communicate to the robot on how it should respond to different situations. This gives the robot a higher sense of intelligence and adaptive skills by providing more information about its environment. These skills allow the robot to change their manipulator location and the position of its end effector so that it can work around obstructions in its work envelope. The robot s surroundings, the precision needed, and what must be sensed all help decide what type of sensor must be used for the robot. Depending on these credentials, robots could be equipped with light, optical, sound, or temperature sensors. Light is a form of radiation that makes up a group of frequencies in the electromagnetic spectrum that we can see. Robots can react to this form of radiation by using light sensors. In 2002, the Swedish Conscripts study reported an increased risk of schizophrenia in individuals who used cannabis (Zammit et al, 2002). In addition, the simultaneous presentation of cannabis use and depressive symptoms is relatively common (Zammit et al, 2002). Habitually, cannabis becomes either a form of substance abuse or a form of self medication. One research study hypothesized that cannabis increases levels of interferongamma, which inhibits the activity of aromatase, the enzyme that converts androgens to estrogen. This in turn creates a deficiency in estrogen, a hormone that augments the synthesis of serotonin, thereby creating a deficiency in serotonin characteristic of major depression and suicide (Bovasso, 2001). To paraphrase, cannabis results in lowers serotonin levels in an indivudal and serotonin is necessary for happiness and thwarting depression. Zammit et al (2002) went on to further assert that not only is the use of cannabis in early adulthood associated with an increased risk of developing schizophrenia; this risk rises with increasing frequency of cannabis use. The largest risk was seen in subjects reporting use of cannabis on more than 50 occasions (Zammit et al, 2002). Furthermore, there was no association between cannabis and other psychotic illnesses, which implies that cannabis has a rather specific association with an increased risk of schizophrenia (Zammit et al, ... It could be your family hurt or even you. Newman states, Rich or poor and all do right, for nobody owes public duty to pay more than the laws demand (1). Visualize how the world would be then. People would then start war between one another. Taking other people things would be so powerful. No one would understand the world we would live in. Killing would then be a big prohibit, think about the elders some cannot receive their income. They would not have any help paying hospital bills, or cannot get their treatments. By any means, this shows no matter which you are taxes could hurt you. Income taxes would be lower for people, and it would not be as high it is today. When taxes hurt people, it that means it is hurting you too. On the other hand, hurting the country is another way taxes could hurt. Taxes hurt the country by increasing the interest rate. Countries would not be able to get as much done and paid for, prices would go up and people would be able to get as much. • 22. William Domhoff s Who Rules America Essay Reading G. William Domhoff s Who Rules America?: The Triumph of the Corporate Rich was an intriguing and challenging experience for me. My limited knowledge base of the American political class system mostly stems from high school US History classes and listening to my mom s stories of her experiences in the corporate world. Therefore, I am aware that due to my prior lack of knowledge on the topics presented in Domhoff s book, I may have misjudged some of his finer points. Part of my struggles may be largely due to the fact that Domhoff s intended audience for Who Rules America? is other experts in the field of understanding the sociology of the corporate elite and their resources of power. However, I believe that the book has given me a better, if not complete, understanding of the corporate elite and how they stay in power. I found the book to be extremely well researched. When Domhoff presents a point, he uses several sources and logical reasons to back up his theory. For example, when relating the dominance of the political elite on the government, Domhoff examines the amount of influence the corporate rich have in our judicial system by investigating the nine Supreme Court judges during the Obama administration. He discovered that all of them graduated from one of three elite institutions: Harvard, Yale, or Columbia (Domhoff, 178, 2014). Domhoff treats most of his assertions in a similar fashion; he uses extensive research backs up his claims. The book explains the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 23. Control The Mind And You Control Their Behavior As stated by T. Blauer, Control the mind and you control the behavior . This quote is relevant because it applies to the way people behave when they know they are being watched. Body cameras are small camcorders law enforcement officers wear with their uniform. Evidence given by body cameras can help defend an officer and his or her job. Citizens will also be benefitted and protected. As a result, officer behavior and work ethic can be refined. Despite the advantages of body cameras, opposition is at hand due to privacy concerns. Police officers should be required to wear body cameras to protect citizens and themselves. Body cameras can protect officers jobs and reputation. When police wear body cameras, there are less allegations filed. Studies have shown that both officers and the public behave better when they know they are being observed. Therefore, there is greater police accountability and less citizen liability. In Rialto, California, a study on police worn cameras was conducted for 12 months. The results of the study show an 88% drop in complaints since body cameras had been in use. Daily Formative Assessment I believe assessment is important and is the basis of planning for instruction, whether it is diagnostic prior to learning, formative during units or lessons, or summative to evaluate student learning. Rowan s quote in Every Teacher s Guide to Assessment, After all, in the end, the problem is less the idea of testing itself, but how we design them, apply, them, and make use of their data. definitely has an impact on my assessment practices. I feel it is necessary to make sure the student acquires all aspects of the learning. Assessment should be used to bring a value for students. Within my instruction, I implement daily formative assessments which may include turn and share, quick writes, graphic organizers, online discussion responses, KahootIt, and other forms. Designing the appropriate formative assessment to match the lesson is important to assess how the learning is taught and whether the students are showing progress. In addition, I have worked on building blocks of formative assessments in checklist style leading up to the point of reviewing for a summative test. Each of these are checked off as completed and instant feedback is given. Feedback from an assessment is essential to student learning and how a teacher will ensure the content is being acquired. ... HIE requires essential coding standards throughout health information management so that information can be accessed, merged, divided and/or shared with other healthcare organizations. In order to reach interoperability; message, exchange, and terminological standards are a few key attributes needed. HL7 v2, CDA and RxNorm aid in reaching these standards to achieve HIE. Standards are important because it facilitates good representation of data and interoperability across systems. It also creates consistency in how we represent data. A large portion of utilizing data is around data management and clean up because data is inconsistently represented. The HL7 v2 standard helps achieve data standardization by having required segments in messages met so that all relevant information delivered can be interpreted clearly by the receiving party. The most common ones found in the business world today are sole proprietorships, partnerships, and corporations. From these you will also find monopolies and oligopolies. Economists assume there are a number of different buyers and sellers in the market which leads to competition which allows prices to change in response to changes in supply and demand.(1) In many industries you there are substitutes for products, so if one type of product becomes too expensive the consumer can choose an alternative product that is cheaper, or one of better quality. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, the goods and services sold on eBay can be considered perfectly competitive. There is a multitude of buyers, or producers, and consumers have options with substitutes. Most of the products sold within their category are similar and for the quality of the product, they are typically within the same price range of one another, and each individual seller chooses their price based on other similar goods sold on the site. Ebay, as a company itself, fits more in the category of an oligopoly, which is actually pretty common in any market. Other alternative websites include Yahoo!, Amazon, and Quibids, but there are only a small number of them, certainly not hundreds as in monopolistic competition. Also, eBay is interdependent on the few other auction website companies, competing with the fees they charge, as well as quality of customer support, and buyer/seller reliability. Another characteristic of eBay that coincides with it being considered an oligopoly is the fact that it has numerous entry barriers. It s such a large company with many restrictions, and it would be hard for an up and coming substitute auction website to break into the market and compete with eBay or the other top companies in the industry. • 30. Building Ventilation Systems Ventilations Systems Introduction Millions of Americans work in buildings with mechanical heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems which have been designed to provide air at comfortable levels of temperature and humidity. Most never worry about harmful concentrations of air pollutants that may exist in the air they breathe. While heating and cooling are basic operations, the more complex processes involved in ventilation are paramount in ensuring high quality indoor air. Ventilation is much more than air flowing throughout a building. Most ventilation systems introduce outdoor air, condition it by mingling it with portions of indoor air and then distributing the resulting combined air throughout the building, usually dispelling small portion outside of the building structure. If any part of the process is inadequate or faulty, the quality of indoor air may be jeopardized and can result in harmful toxins or pollutants circulating in enclosed spaces where they can pose health risks. Ventilation, either natural or mechanical, is an effective approach to providing acceptable indoor air. General ventilation of a building is needed to satisfy the respiratory needs of its occupants and to remove any body odors and tobacco smoke, should smoking be permitted. On a more serious level, systems that are improperly operated or maintained have been known to contribute to sick building syndrome (SBS); SBS has physical symptoms without clearly recognizable causes. ... Gender And The Media By Rosalind Gill Book Review of Gender and the Media by Rosalind Gill Gender and the Media by Rosalind Gill addresses gender stereotypes that are brought onto women and men through the media resulting in objectification and subjectification. Gill discusses how the representation of gender is altered as a result of the media in Western societies. Gender and the Media is aimed to address the rapid transmission of media and how those changes affect the construction of feminine and masculine gender roles in society. Gill uses her interest in the contradictions of gender construction by society, to analyze gender and the media. Using feminism as a backbone for her research, Gill and many commentators support the idea that feminist ideas are common and may even affect the media.
