Dr. Stevin Gehrke s Lab
Upon arriving as a student at the University of Kansas, I immediately took an interest in numerous
extracurricular activities and organizations. I have established myself as a leader in multiple
organizations, including my role as vice president in the Biomedical Engineering Society at KU.
These organizations have provided fantastic experiences, but I found myself needing more. I found
enjoyment and success in my classes, but I was eager to apply my knowledge. I sought out positions
in various research groups on campus, and I eventually pursued an opportunity to partake in
undergraduate research involving hydrogels and their characteristics in Dr. Stevin Gehrke s lab. In this
lab, I create and characterize various polymer based hydrogels by way of click chemistry using
multiple crosslink wavelengths and times as well as varying concentrations of different monomers,
polymers, and photoinitiators. I perform mechanical assessments that include measurement of
swelling degrees and compression testing to determine various moduli for characterization of gels.
These assessments are performed to determine the most suitable gels for biomedical uses such as cell
encapsulation and drug delivery. It has been the first real opportunity I ve had to utilize my passion
and skills for important and relevant advancements in the scientific community. I have learned the
importance of laboratory safety and have implemented these practices. I have further developed basic
skills that are necessary

The Political Reform Of A Democracy Essay
The basis of a democracy goes back as far as 507 B.C. It was introduced by Ancient Athens first
leader Cleisthenes. His primary mean was to ensure equality among his people; however, Cleisthenes
equality declaration only spread so far and accomplished so much. Only forty thousand men over the
age of eighteen were allowed to be part of Athens political affairs. This Athenian democracy was
separated into three parts: the ekklesia a sovereign governing body that wrote laws and dictated
foreign policy; the boule a council of representatives from the ten Athenian tribes; and the dikasteria
the popular courts in which citizens argued cases before a group of lottery selected jurors. Cleisthenes
democracy only survived for two centuries. However, his political reform of a democracy is one of
Ancient Greece s best contributions to the entire world. Democracy is defined as a form of
government in which the supreme power is vested in the people, and exercised directly by them or by
their elected agents under a free electoral system. It is also defined as a state of democracy
characterized by formal equality of rights at privileges. In short terms, a democracy is ran for the
people, by the people. It is primarily focused on the equality among people, and those same people are
able to control who holds the power in their economy. We, the United States, run as a democracy.
Though, the electoral votes are those that are only accounted for in the election, our vote

The Waubano Disaster
Many ships plied the Great Lakes treacherous waters through the 19th century and without surprise
there were many sinkings and many lives lost. Parry Sound got its first full dose in November 1879
when the Waubano mysteriously sank. It was a side wheeled ship often carrying goods and people
between the Sound and Collingwood. Auspiciously a bride had a dream days before portending the
disaster. The weather had been bad, typical for so late in the season, but the last sighting had it doing
well. When it sank, all 24 passengers and crew went down with her including the bride and her groom.
On the occasion in question involved the midnight of September 13 1882 with slightly larger
steamship, The Asia. It left for Collingwood headed for Owen Sound ... Show more content on

From 1910 and for many years after, the Armstrongs, became a good place for winter fun with
dancing and violin playing till dawn the next day. The ice in the nearby bay of Blackstone Lake was
cleared using a plough with a team of horses, then smoothened out by pouring water on top for an ice
skating party. People from Otter Lake, Foley and even the British diplomat Wilfred Powell who
sometimes wintered over down on the south end of the lake would come with their wooden skates and
enjoy Rosa s hot chocolate and cookies.
A set of tragic events plagued Rosa s life. On top of loosing Matthew in the prime of life, she outlived
all but one of her five children. Between Alberta and Cecil she had Henry Edwin born in 1894 and
dying a year later. Her eldest, Alberta just after a few years of marriage herself succumbed to
meningitis in 1911 at the age of 21 and her youngest Arthur died of the same illness at age 28 refusing

Narrative About Truck
I m really in Love This Time I ve worked all summer to receive what I most desired. My 1999 Dodge
Dakota. I have a love/hate relationship with this vehicle. Three grand got me something that I never
knew I could for the amount it was worth. I never knew about this vehicle until my friend Ryan
brought it up. This is not a very big truck, but it is not very small either. This 5.2l V8 gives me chills. I
wake up to the sound of it in the morning, even though I wake up the whole neighborhood. My mother
hates that I take it to work at 5 o clock in the morning. She stumbles out of bet to hear a monstrous
V8. I had no plans on getting one, but it was appealing to the eye as I was scrolling through Offer Up.

Comparing the Techniques Used by the Writers to Create a Sense of Fear and Tension in The Black
Cat, The Red Room and The Yellow Wallpaper
Short stories like The Black Cat , The Red Room and The Yellow wallpaper , which were all written
during the pre 1914 s, were used as popular entertainment during the 19th 20th century. At that time
there was no television. Today, if we wanted to be entertained by something with similar horrific
content we could watch a film on TV, however, in the late 19th century this role had to be filled with
the short story. The social context at the time was male dominant and a woman was expected to stay at
home looking after the children and cleaning while the man went ... Show more content on

All three of the narrators write in first person, showing it as a personal experience to make the reader
feel more involved. This builds fear and tension because you can sense the build up of emotions and
imagine being in the narrators place. For example, in The Yellow Wallpaper the narrator says I get
unreasonably angry with John sometimes expressing her anger emotion, so we feel more involved.
She says that her anger is unreasonable but really it is not because she has the right to be angry with
him as he locks her up all the time and won t even let her see her baby. Although all three of the
stories are written in first person they are written differently, for example in The Yellow Wallpaper the
narrator builds all the fear and tension herself, whereas, in The Black Cat the narrator brings outside
influences into it, for example, the black cat and the narrator s wife influence some of the fear and
tension. In The Black Cat and The Red Room the narrator is male and both males are quite dominant,
but in The Yellow Wallpaper the narrator is female and is overpowered by her husband. This means
that a lot of emotional tension is built in the story.
At the beginning of The Black Cat and The Red Room the respective

Court Of Appeals Case Summary
Christina Freeman 1. What court decided the case in the assignment? (2 points) Court of Appeals of
Ohio, First District, Hamilton County. 2. According to the case, what must a party establish to prevail
on a motion for summary judgment? (3 points) In order to prevail on a motion for summary judgment,
a movant has the burden to demonstrate that no genuine issue of material fact remains to be litigated;
that it is entitled to judgment as a matter of law, and that it appears from the evidence, when viewed
most strongly in favor of the nonmoving party, that reasonable minds can come to but one conclusion
and that conclusion is adverse to the nonmoving party. 3. Briefly state the facts of this case, using the

Thus, serious emotional distress may be found where a reasonable person, normally constituted,
would be unable to cope adequately with the mental distress engendered by the circumstances of the
case. 5. According to the case, why didn t the court approve summary judgment for product liability
claims? (5 points) The court didn t approve summary judgment for product liability claims because the
Nadel s failed to show that a reasonable consumer would agree with them that coffee brewed at 175
degrees was excessively hot. They also failed to produce any evidence that the coffee was actually
hotter than they expected other than Christopher receiving the second degree burns. The articles they
provided were not true evidence because documents that do not have an affidavit have no value as
evidence. 6. Do you agree with this decision? Why or why not? (5 points) I disagree with this decision
because Christopher suffered second degree burns which is more than enough evidence to show that
the coffee was too ho. No warning was given to the family by the employee, and Burger King lacked
to have the manufacturer of their coffee cups place a warning on the cups. A lot of cases like this have
occurred before, and now it is a requirement for the warning to be placed on containers. Some may
argue that you know to proceed with caution when handling hot objects, and that Evelyn should not
have placed the cup holder on the floor or the dashboard which would have

Data Transmission Using Bluetooth Technology
Data transmission using Bluetooth technology

Abstract
Bluetooth is a wireless technology used for short range UHF radio wave transmission. It was invented
by Telecom giant Ericsson way back in 1994. It officially got its name Bluetooth in 1998 when
Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) comprising of Intel, Toshiba, Ericsson, IBM, and Nokia was
formed. Bluetooth SIG has more than 24,000 members at present. Almost every mobile device and
most of the computers are equipped with Bluetooth today. It signifies the success Bluetooth has
received over the years. It was basically invented to serve as wireless replacement of RS232. Since
then it was been incorporated for a myriad of applications like data transmission, voice transmission,
wirelessly connecting devices, and numerous others applications. One of the aspect because of which
Bluetooth technology stands out in the market is its ability to handle data and voice transmission at the
same time. The focus of this paper is its data transmission application, how it works, its limitations,
and scope for technological advancements to negate its limitations.
1. Introduction
The key features of Bluetooth technology are ubiquitousness, low power, and low cost. is the way
Bluetooth group defines themselves in the market [1]. Bluetooth works on a technology named

Nacirema
Who are the Nacirema and how shall they be defined? The dictionary defines an Anthropologist as a
person that studies human beings and their ancestors through time and space and in relation to
physical character, environmental and social relations, and culture (Webster 2011). I am not claiming
to be an Anthropologist however, from my viewpoint, I am not sure if I am capable of grasping my
mind around the concept that the body is ugly and that its natural tendency is to debility and disease
explained, ( Horace Miner , 2005). Unfortunately, the Nacirema people believe that this statement is
true based on their culture and their belief system. The Nacirema has a rich and an untraceable culture

In Jones findings, the ancestral spirit, therefore, is above all and it is just a symbol ( Myth amp;

was he trying to prove?
Needless to say, we are all creatures that will go through an evolutionary process. Furthermore, with
internet moving with the speed of light, we shall all discover new cultures and advancements that will
promote behavior changes, new cultural awareness as well as similarities. My question is, was this
difficult for Miner to accept?
In conclusion I would like to point out that, Ellin (2008) explained that when Horace Miner in 1956,
was using hyperbole as well as rhetorical misreading to defamiliarized his own culture in this essay
Body ritual among the Nacirema. Nacirema is American spelled backwards . He exposed an obsession
with the body that contributed to masochistic tendencies including annual visit to holy men (dentist);
and weekly head baking by women (using hair dryers); lacerating the face with sharp instrument by
men (shaving); and he discusses the ritual fast to make fat people thin ( Life support: Nacirema redux
). Through this entire scenario, my perspective is that Miner was not prepared for change, growth nor
evolution. * Works Cited

The Fifth Amendment For Theu.s. Constitution Essay
The sixth amendment to the U.S constitution guarantees a defendant in a criminal prosecution the
right to a speedy, public, and impartial trial by jury. Once it has determined that the trial will be by
jury, the next step in the criminal proceeding is the selection of the jurors. During this process possible
jurors receive a summons in the mall ordering them to appear in court at a specified time and date the
people who are summoned comprise the venire (the prospective jurors for cases). Voir dire Latin term
meaning to speak the truth, this is an examination conducted by the courts or by the attorneys of a
potential juror or witness to determine if they would be proficient or qualified for services. Jurors
questionnaires reveals information disqualifying them from jury service is only the first step in the
jury selection process. Typical questions relate to whether prospective jurors know the defendant, the
attorneys, or any of the witnesses, whether they have read or heard about the case in the media, and
whether they have racial, nationality, or gender biases. Effective voir dire is getting the prospective
jurors to tell the court or attorneys what they need to know( Ferdico, J 2005).
During the voir dire process, the way jurors are removed is part logic and part legal strategy. The
judge determines that a potential juror is not likely to be fair to both sides in the case, than the juror
will be excused for cause. There are two possible ways prospective jurors may be

How Religion Has Influenced The Life Of A Nun
By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another? (Jn
13:35)What is a committed religious life for being a Catholic sister or nun. Catholic sister and nuns
have a different variation of lifestyle, ministries and callings. All community has its own peculiar
identity and flavor, this is because there are no two association, as there is no two nuns that are the
same. As we watch movies about nuns we sometimes predict sisters and nuns to be living a highly
ordered life which is unchanging in structure which is repetitive in context. But the truth is that there
may be some regular customs and practices, a day in Catholic sister and nun life as it is diverse,
especially as the Holy Spirit is in charge.
As a day in a life of nuns are constructed around service within the chapel because by joining a
convent or nunnery, nuns have to make a choice to devote their life to God. Religion has influenced
the life of a nun. A lot of convents do have its own particular daily timetable for a nun as many do the
following similarly:
the first day of services 02.00: Matins Laud
After Matins Laud, nuns would go back to bed and would get up again at first light. She then would
go and wash and have a breakfast which consist of bread and beer. This is because of the boiling
process involved in the making of beer.( it was a lot less dangerous to drink beer than water.)

Food Wastage
Food Wastage
At the moment, it is hard to tell whether the world has sufficient food supplies or not. Most of
developed countries claim to have people who are still not able to access food while at the same time,
still report of more food wastage than the third world, developing nations. That indicates a big mishap
in the food cycle as it so happens that most of the food either finds itself in the dumpster or on the
plates of the very rich. China, USA, Canada, South Eastern Asia, and Europe have been amongst the
countries hit by this storm of food wasting. While Britain is said to be throwing away about thirteen
pounds of food per week, Canada is struggling with same problem. The United States is not spared

50% effective sorting as having had taken place in Beijing. Also, various organizations are trying to
make sure that less food go to waste. Here, other than collecting of food scrap, China could think of
ways in which it can collect food and make it into compost. Other than making of compost it would be
vital to reduce foods at various joints such as school cafeterias so that less goes to waste. Many people
ought to be educated of the situation at hand so that they too can try their hand on trying to save.
Creation of a saving culture will see to the institution of a system where people use less cash on food
stuff and only buy what they want (Yau, 2013). Here, education seems to be the best bet and people
can, as well, try to donate the extra that they would use on food to the poor: after all, the wasted food
can feed all of them and still have more than seventy million people to feed as excess.
Education is vital since it does not only lessen the waste, but it also make sure that less cash is used on
things that end up being thrown into a dump. The money can be used on more important ventures such
as personal development (Yau, 2013; Tang, 2013)).

accept it that soon you ll be drenched to the bone, if your time to you is worth savin then you better
start swimmin or you ll sink like a stone, for the times they are a changin ! (Dylan, 88) These lyrics,
which were written by Bob Dylan over thirty years ago, are as applicable today, or even more so, as
they were then. I have always considered the song to be about cultural change between generations.
Even so, the analogies of the song can apply to various types of change. With the information age, it is
quite possible that our lives are changing at an even faster rate than when Bob Dylan penned those
lyrics. The result of change is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many of our ancestors were subjected to working and living conditions that we would consider
deplorable. In many industries, workers were required to do twice as much work for less wages. The
hours were long and employers had little regard for workers health or safety. Consequently, mines and
factories had extremely high rates of job injury and deaths. For many, home life was not much better.
Over crowding, lack of sanitary conveniences, dirt, filth and disease already stood in stark and glaring
contrast to the comfortable, spacious, well furnished homes of the wealthy (Dulles, 79). The rapid
influx of immigrants helped provide cheap labor, competition for jobs, and contributed to the
overcrowding of cities. These conditions did not change overnight. Early labor organizations had to
struggle with both industry and the government to secure the most basic rights for workers. In fact, it
took over 150 years for unions to establish the legal right to organize. Along with wanting wages that
were high enough to provide the basic needs, unions fought for the 8 hour workday, child labor laws,
equal pay for the sexes, and public education (Dulles, 108,132)(Encyclopedia Americana, 630).
Various organizations formed to provide for the needs of a diverse working population. Some were
more successful than others were. However, all faced opposition from the business owners.

Bayeux Tapestry is a primary source of history because it was created just after the Battle of Hasting,
which took place on the 14th of October 1066 A.D/C.E. The Bayeux Tapestry was created in the 11th
Century. The person who commissioned the Bayeux Tapestry was Bishop Odo. Bishop Odo was the
half brother of Duke William, who was the leader of the Normans. He created the Bayeux Tapestry in
honour of the victory for the Normans in the Battle of Hastings. The perspective that is not given in
the Bayeux Tapestry is the English perspective. The English perspective is not in the Bayeux Tapestry
because it wasn t the English who created the Bayeux Tapestry and it was in the Norman perspective.

The Importance Of Social Justice And Inclusion
Introduction
Social justice and inclusion have become important parts of the modern world, especially within the
Scottish education system. They allow pupils to reach their full potential and to become fully
integrated whilst at school, regardless of background or disability. However these terms are ever
changing and require a lot of thought and determination to be fully fulfilled within schools. This paper

Defining social justice and inclusion
The concepts of social justice and inclusion are both heavily interlinked and the pair complement each
other throughout policy and literature.
The term social justice is normally used when referring to the ideas of equality and providing equal
opportunities to pupils within school, regardless of their background, history or circumstances. Views
of social justice can change depending on who is discussing the topic.
The Scottish Government have been tackling social justice for many years. In 1999 they published a
report titled Social Justice a Scotland for all as well as putting in place an action plan and a task force.
However within these reports there was not an actual definition for what they perceived social justice
to be.

Character Analysis Of King Loar s King Lear
Audiences love knowing who is the villain of a story. There s a certain power in seeing something not
visible to the other characters, recognizing a seed of hatred blooming behind the scenes. It brings a
sense of satisfaction, actively rooting against the antagonist so that the hero can win. Seeing the
difference between good and bad isn t easy in real life, but in a fictional world all of the rules change,
and the audience knows the truth. In King Lear, Goneril and Regan, daughters to the king, are almost
immediately cemented into the role of antagonists due to characters reactions to them and insider
knowledge the audience gains when listening to their private talks. However, we only make this leap
because certain characters in the play want us to. But what if those characters are wrong? Maybe the
world of the play already believes Goneril and Regan are the villains, but as an outside audience we
have the option to give the sisters a chance to prove themselves. Looking at their actions, listening to
their words, nothing about the two sisters implies that they re bloodthirsty or traitors to their family.
Instead, Regan and Goneril instead seem to be protecting themselves from an unloving and possibly
abusive father. In the first scene of the play, Goneril, Regan, and Cordelia must tell their dad how
much they love him in order to receive their inheritance. Goneril and Regan flatter their dad
extensively, but Cordelia refuses to speak because her love is too great to put

  • 2. Dr. Stevin Gehrke s Lab Upon arriving as a student at the University of Kansas, I immediately took an interest in numerous extracurricular activities and organizations. I have established myself as a leader in multiple organizations, including my role as vice president in the Biomedical Engineering Society at KU. These organizations have provided fantastic experiences, but I found myself needing more. I found enjoyment and success in my classes, but I was eager to apply my knowledge. I sought out positions in various research groups on campus, and I eventually pursued an opportunity to partake in undergraduate research involving hydrogels and their characteristics in Dr. Stevin Gehrke s lab. In this lab, I create and characterize various polymer based hydrogels by way of click chemistry using multiple crosslink wavelengths and times as well as varying concentrations of different monomers, polymers, and photoinitiators. I perform mechanical assessments that include measurement of swelling degrees and compression testing to determine various moduli for characterization of gels. These assessments are performed to determine the most suitable gels for biomedical uses such as cell encapsulation and drug delivery. It has been the first real opportunity I ve had to utilize my passion and skills for important and relevant advancements in the scientific community. I have learned the importance of laboratory safety and have implemented these practices. I have further developed basic skills that are necessary ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Political Reform Of A Democracy Essay The basis of a democracy goes back as far as 507 B.C. It was introduced by Ancient Athens first leader Cleisthenes. His primary mean was to ensure equality among his people; however, Cleisthenes equality declaration only spread so far and accomplished so much. Only forty thousand men over the age of eighteen were allowed to be part of Athens political affairs. This Athenian democracy was separated into three parts: the ekklesia a sovereign governing body that wrote laws and dictated foreign policy; the boule a council of representatives from the ten Athenian tribes; and the dikasteria the popular courts in which citizens argued cases before a group of lottery selected jurors. Cleisthenes democracy only survived for two centuries. However, his political reform of a democracy is one of Ancient Greece s best contributions to the entire world. Democracy is defined as a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people, and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system. It is also defined as a state of democracy characterized by formal equality of rights at privileges. In short terms, a democracy is ran for the people, by the people. It is primarily focused on the equality among people, and those same people are able to control who holds the power in their economy. We, the United States, run as a democracy. Parry Sound got its first full dose in November 1879 when the Waubano mysteriously sank. It was a side wheeled ship often carrying goods and people between the Sound and Collingwood. This builds fear and tension because you can sense the build up of emotions and imagine being in the narrators place. She says that her anger is unreasonable but really it is not because she has the right to be angry with him as he locks her up all the time and won t even let her see her baby. Although all three of the stories are written in first person they are written differently, for example in The Yellow Wallpaper the narrator builds all the fear and tension herself, whereas, in The Black Cat the narrator brings outside influences into it, for example, the black cat and the narrator s wife influence some of the fear and tension. In The Black Cat and The Red Room the narrator is male and both males are quite dominant, but in The Yellow Wallpaper the narrator is female and is overpowered by her husband. Effective voir dire is getting the prospective jurors to tell the court or attorneys what they need to know( Ferdico, J 2005). He took action and immediately started to yell, FIRE! to wake up his friends and neighbors. Dennis Rogan had heard Mr. Sullivan and quickly ran to the O Leary s house. Soon the little barricade of fire trucks and firefighters was broken and they were forced back. When the firefighter got there Goll was gone so he broke the glass that guarded the alarm box and pushed the button down. Unfortunately, he forgot to push it down a second time telling the office that it was a message for reinforcements. Instead the alarm office at the courthouse thought it was another person turning in the exact same fire. So they never sent in extra trucks. It wasn t until the watchman from different station saw that the fire and the extra trucks were sent. By then it was too late the flames were now too big for any of the trucks to handle. The fire soon grew bigger and bigger. Then it started to move to the west side of Chicago. At first people thought it would be no big deal. Seeing the difference between good and bad isn t easy in real life, but in a fictional world all of the rules change, and the audience knows the truth. In King Lear, Goneril and Regan, daughters to the king, are almost immediately cemented into the role of antagonists due to characters reactions to them and insider knowledge the audience gains when listening to their private talks. However, we only make this leap because certain characters in the play want us to. But what if those characters are wrong? Maybe the world of the play already believes Goneril and Regan are the villains, but as an outside audience we have the option to give the sisters a chance to prove themselves. Looking at their actions, listening to their words, nothing about the two sisters implies that they re bloodthirsty or traitors to their family. Instead, Regan and Goneril instead seem to be protecting themselves from an unloving and possibly abusive father. In the first scene of the play, Goneril, Regan, and Cordelia must tell their dad how much they love him in order to receive their inheritance.
