This document discusses teaching methods, including traditional and modern approaches. It provides details on the lecture method. Some key points:
- It defines teaching as an art and science that involves imparting knowledge through a systematic process based on educational objectives.
- Teaching methods refer to the ways teachers deliver content to students. It lists some traditional methods like lectures and discussions, and modern methods such as problem-solving and field trips.
- When selecting a method, teachers should consider factors like class level, subject nature, resources available and time.
- The lecture method involves an oral presentation by the teacher to present information. It is one of the oldest methods but can be effective if the teacher engages students through

an introduction and concept of micro-teachingGunjan Verma
Micro-teaching is a teacher training and faculty development technique whereby the teacher reviews a recording of a teaching session, in order to get constructive feedback from peers and/ or students about what has worked and what improvements can be made to their teaching technique.
Teaching of a small unit of content to the small group of students (6-10 number) in a small amount of time (5-10 min.) is called microteaching.
Lecture method is the most commonly used method of teaching science. It is a teacher- controlled & information centered approach in which the teacher works as a sole-resource in classroom instruction.
There are different types of teaching methods which can be categorised into three broad types. These are teacher-centred methods, learner-centred methods, content-focused methods and interactive/participative methods.

Lecture method is most commonly method use in higher classes, the word lecture is derived from Latin word Lectus which means to read, lecture method covered large population in short period of time
The ultimate aim of teaching and learning in nursing education is to prepare good nurses who can provide quality nursing care to the patients as well as to conduct researches, to act as good nursing educators and administrators.
In every teaching-learning process apart from teacher there are three important components, i.e. learner, teaching-learning objectives and teaching methods.
Method of teaching- lecture is the most common method of teaching. It is effective for imparting knowledge up to comprehension level but less effective for higher cognitive levels.
GENERAL OBJECTIVE:
At the end of class, the students will acquire the knowledge regarding the METHODS OF
TEACHING and apply this knowledge in their practical skill training for the effective teaching and
learning.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the class the students will be able to :
1. define methods of teaching
2. list down the teaching methods
3. discuss about Lecture, demonstration, group discussion, seminar
4. deliberate symposium, panel discussion
5. enumerate the, role play, project, field trip
6. explain the workshop, exhibition, programmed instruction
7. elaborate about computer assisted learning
8. detail about micro teaching, problem based learning, Self instructional
module and simulation etc.
INTRODUCTION
Good teaching is the main criterion of an effective teacher. Every individual is unique and so
different teachers adopt different methods and strategies of teaching. The main objective of teaching
is to be bring about desired changes in the attitude and behaviour of the learner.
The selection of the teaching methods depends upon the
Nature of a task
Learning objectives
Learner abilities
Student entering behaviour.
DEFINITION OF TEACHING MEHOD:
• Teaching method is the stimulation, guidance, direction and encouragement of learning.
-Burton
• The way or style of the presentation of content in a classroom is called teaching method.M.Varma
has presented a broad meaning of the term teaching method.
• According to him ,content matter is important for determining the teaching method.
TEACHING METHODS ARE CLASSIFIED 3 DOMAINS
• Telling methods(lecture,questioning,discussion)
• Showing methods(demonstration,excursion
• Doing method(project,role play,practical
TEACHING METHODS:
• Lecture, demonstration, group discussion, seminar symposium, panel discussion, role play, project,
field trip, workshop, exhibition, programmed instruction, computer assisted learning, micro teaching
problem based learning, Self instructional module and simulation etc.
• Clinical teaching methods: case method, nursing round & reports, bedside clinic, conference
(individual & group) process recording
LECTURE METHOD
DEMOSTRATION
GROUP DISCUSSION
DEFINITION
• Group discussion can be defined as three or more participants who have an agreed topic to discuss &
share their views in all the aspects & submit/present their views in the form of report to bigger
gathering.
DEFINITION
“Demonstration is method of teaching by exhibition and explanation combined to illustrate a
procedure experiments”.
-According to Gullibert
“Demonstration is a method of teaching by exhibition and explanation or experiments”.
DEFINE LECTURE METHOD..
Lecture method is the teaching procedure comprising the presentation of content, clarification of
doubts & explanation of facts, principles & relationships.
How to teach is really difficult problem for the teacher. To make the teaching of mathematics interesting vital the teacher should know the proper methods of teaching. Secondary education commission(1952-53) has emphasised the need and importance of choosing right methods of teaching

7. SELECTION OF APPROPRIATE TEACHING
METHOD
A number of things needed to be considered
while selecting a teaching method
Class level
Nature of the subject
Number of students
Size of the classroom
Resources available
Time available
10. LECTURE METHOD
A lecture is a oral presentation intend to
present information or teach people about a
particular subject
A politician's speech, a minister’s sermon, or
even a businessman’s sales presentation
may be similar in form to a lecture
Lecture has significant role out side the
classroom such as in churches, community
centers,libraries,museums
12. LECTURE AS A TEACHING METHOD
Lecture method is the oldest method
Teacher role is very active in this method
Students are generally passive
Teacher is leader in this method
Students just follow the instructions of
teacher
One way communication
14. LECTURE COMPONENTS
Silberman(1990) suggests five approaches
to maximizing students’ understanding and
retention during lectures. These can be used
to help ensure the effective transfer of
knowledge
Use an opening key
At the beginning of the lecture present major
points
15. LECTURE COMPONENTS
Present key terms
Reduce the major points in the lecture to key
points
Offer examples
When possible provide examples from real life
Use analogies
If possible make a comparison between the
content of the lecture and knowledge the
students already have
16. LECTURE COMPONENTS
Use visual backups
Use a variety of media to enable students to
see as well as hear what is being said
18. MERITS OF LECTURE METHOD
Why Lecture Method is useful?
This method is suitable for big classes
This method is cheap one
It is time saving method
An oldest method yet it is a popular
Teacher can present the content logically and
with sequence
Teacher can make a better use of this method
they are trained traditionally
19. DEMERITS OF LECTURE METHOD
Following are the demerits of lecture method
Student role is passive
Selected study Students do not make additional
studies
Students feel boredom due to the absence of
activities
Lecture method is not suitable to teach science
and professional subjects
It encourages rote memory
20. DEMERITS OF LECTURE METHOD
Students can not concentrate on lecture for
long time
No interaction between teacher and student
This method Discourage communication
skills
21. SUGGESTIONS
How lecture can be effective for learning?
The following tasks should be taken in to enhance
the effectiveness of lecture method
Teacher should prepare the lecture in advance
Open the lecture with good introduction
There must be sequence between in
information, ideas and concepts
Additional examples should be include when
necessary
22. SUGGESTIONS
During lecture key points should be written
on writing board
Audio-visual aids should be used when there
is need
There must be a question answer session
Maintain eye contact with the students
For large lecture halls, use a microphone if
necessary
24. SUGGESTIONS
Avoid the use of slang or repetitive
Provide positive feedback when students ask
questions
Close the lecture with a brief but a powerful
summary
