2. What is information technology?
Information technology (IT) is the application
of computers and telecommunications
equipment to store, retrieve, transmit and
manipulate data, often in the context of a
business or other enterprise.
It refers to anything related to computing
technology, such as networking, hardware,
software, the Internet, or the people that
work with these technologies.
3. Application of information
technology in our daily life
IT in Education
students have many
opportunities to learn
the basic computer
skills to facilitate their
learning.
4. IT at Home
Personal computer
Use online public service
Communication Entertainment
Internet activities
5. IT in Public Places
Public can obtain information from internet more conveniently
6. IT in Business
a. IT helps office workers improve working efficiency
productivity, data security and communications with
others
7. b. Refers to commercial activities carried out in an electronic network
8. IT in Government
a. UID Project
contains personal data, templates of thumb prints and
photograph of card holder
Information stored is kept with high security
b. Railway Booking
helps in booking the tickets online
c. Bill Payments
Reduces the physical movements of people for paying bills.
9. Benefits of information technology
Globalization - IT has not only brought the world
closer together, but it has allowed the world’s
economy to become a single interdependent
system.
Communication – With the help of information
technology, communication has also become
cheaper, quicker, and more efficient.
Creation of new jobs – the best advantage of IT is
the creation of new and interesting jobs.
10. Bridging the cultural gap – IT has helped to bridge
the cultural gap by helping people from different
cultures to communicate with one another.
Cost effectiveness – IT has helped to computerized
the business process thus streamlining businesses to
make them extremely cost effective money making
machines.
Information Technology makes business easier
11. Disadvantages of Information
Technology
Unemployment – while IT may have streamlined the
business it has also created job shortage. Ex: a lot of
lower and middle level jobs have been done away
causing more people to become unemployed.
Privacy – Though IT may have made communication
quicker, easier and more convenient, it has also
bought along privacy issues.
12. Dominant Culture – while IT may have made
the world a global village, it has also contribute
to one culture dominating another weaker
one.
Lack of job security – One has to be in a
constant learning mode, if he or she wishes for
their job to be secure.
13. Basics of Information Technology
Introduction of Internet
A means of connecting a
computer to any other
computer anywhere in the
world via dedicated routers
and servers.
When two computers are
connected over the Internet,
they can send and receive all
kinds of information such as
text, graphics, voice, video,
and computer programs.
14. World Wide Web
The World Wide Web (www, W3) is an information system of
interlinked hypertext documents that are accessed via
the Internet.
It has also commonly become known simply as the Web.
Individual document pages on the World Wide Web are
called web pages and are accessed with a software application
running on the user's computer, commonly called a web browser.
Web pages may contain text, images, videos, and
other multimedia components, as well as web navigation features
consisting of hyperlinks.
It is a client-server system.
15. Client-side refers to operations that are performed by
the client in a computer network. Typically, a client is a
computer application, such as a web browser, that runs on a
user's local computer or workstation and connects to a server
as necessary.
16. Server-side refers to operations that are performed by
the server in computer networking. Typically, a server is a
computer program, such as a webserver, that runs on a
remote server, reachable from a user's local computer or
workstation.
17. Web Servers
Web server is an information technology that deliver Web pages. Every
Web server has an IP address and possibly a domain name. For example,
if you enter the URL http://www.google.com in your browser, this sends
a request to the Web server whose domain name is google.com. The
server then find the page and sends it to your browser.
18. Web Browser
A web browser is a software application for retrieving and
presenting information resources on the World Wide Web.
An information resource is identified by a Uniform
Resource Identifier (URI/URL) and may be a web page,
image, video or other piece of content.
The major web browsers are Firefox, Internet
Explorer, Google Chrome, Opera, and Safari
19. Uniform Resource Locator (URL)
URL it is the global address of documents and other resources on the World
Wide Web.
The first part of the URL is called a protocol identifier and it indicates
what protocol to use.
The second part is called a resource name and it specifies the IP address or
the domain name where the resource is located.
The protocol identifier and the resource name are separated by a colon (:)
and two forward slashes (//).
http://www.google.com
Protocol identifier
URL
Domain Name
21. Protocol indicator Use
http:// For the documents presents on web
File:// For files that presents on local hard drive
ftp:// For files that presents on ftp servers
Gopher:// For documents that presents on gopher server
telnet:// For library catalogs
wais:// Wide area information server
Mailts:// It provide one window by use of that user can send mail
News:// It connect to news group
22. Web Page
A web page is a web document that is suitable for
the World Wide Web and the web browser.
A web browser displays a web page on a monitor or mobile
device.
The web page is what displays, but the term also refers to
a computer file, usually written in HTML or
comparable markup language.
Web browsers coordinate the various web
resource elements for the written web page, such as style
sheets, scripts and images, to present the web page.
24. Website
A website is a set of
related web pages typically
served from a single web
domain.
A website is hosted on at
least one web server,
accessible via a network
such as the Internet through
an Internet address known
as a uniform resource
locator (URL).
All publicly accessible
websites collectively
constitute the World Wide
Web.
25. Blog
A blog is a discussion or informational website which is
published on the World Wide Web and consisting posts
typically displayed in reverse chronological order (the most
