* Where are the best opportunities for your business today? How do you stand out in crowded

Where should you focus amidst this complexity? What is your competitive advantage? Which
markets, brands, products and customers should you prioritize in order to maximize value creation?

you make more of your brand, in new markets or applications? And how do you capture its full impact

However, most business strategies are inadequate for today s markets. They are developed without
sufficient context, they are developed inside out rather than outside in. They promote evolution rather
than revolution, avoiding hard decisions, seeking to do what is currently done, even if it is
increasingly out of synch with the market. They lack the stretch to see the future

Antigone As A Tragic Hero
Antigone is a tragedy by the ancient Greek playwright Sophocles, which depicts two extraordinary
cases for a tragic hero. Both Creon and Antigone are the principal characters of the play to be tragic
heroes. A tragic hero is a character who is known for being noble and has an imperfection that helps to
his or her destruction. Creon and Antigone are honorable and defective in their own particular
manners, having a comparative deplorable imperfection. The greatest golfer ever known as Tiger
Woods is portrayed as a modern day tragic hero because of his flaw of over the top pride leading to the
decimation of his profession and relationship. Tiger takes responsibility for his actions, yet it is too
late and he would has to tolerate the inevitable consequences. Antigone is portrayed as a character
who is very proud her pride is one of the elements that causes her downfall. Antigone has her mind set
on burying her brother Polyneices and she will stop at nothing until she does what will bring her great
glory. Creon remains firm on his decision, anyone who pursues to bury Polyneices, the one who
attacked the city, will be punished by death. Antigone is also described as egotistical in the way that
she reveals to her sister who won t become involved with Polyneices burial oh tell it! Tell everyone!
Think how they ll hate you when it all comes out if they learn you knew about it all the time. She
additionally spares her pride and ego as the Choragos comments Like father, like

Parent Relationships And Its Effect On A Child s Development
Parent relationships play a huge role in a child s development. A child learns what is appropriate, how
to behave, and are shown what a healthy marriage looks like. If their parent s relationship concludes in
divorce, they will not see a truly successful relationship, causing the child to have some short and long
term effects that can hinder them in their life. Homosexual marriage also has some lasting effects on a
child because of the irregular parenting style in a society where heterosexual marriage is most
common. Divorce and homosexual marriage can create potential adverse short and long term effects,
demonstrating that heterosexual marriage is in the best interest of the children.
Many children go through a divorce at some point in their life. Statistics show that in a year,
approximately one million children under eighteen experience their parent s divorce; putting it into
perspective, this is about forty percent of children (Matthews 1). Since 1960, the divorce rate has been
doubling just about every decade until 1990, and currently has leveled off at that rate (Gallagher 1).
Amy Desai researched psychologist, Judith Wallerstein, who performed a study where she interviewed
children of a divorce eighteen months, five, ten, fifteen and twenty five years after the divorce of their
parents. After twenty five years, she states, Even 25 years after the divorce, these children continued
to experience substantial expectations of failure, fear of loss, fear of change, and

The Most Significant Aspect of Roosevelt s Presidency and New Deal up to 1941
In this essay I am going to be assessing which was the most significant aspect of Franklin Delano
Roosevelt s Presidency, by looking at four different aspects of it, and then applying tests to each
aspect. I will be looking into Roosevelt s Economic Policies, Economic Ideas, Role of the Presidency
and the Electoral performance of the Democratic party and then, applying the following tests to them:
Firstly, the Amount of change, then the Immediate effects, then the Long term effects, and finally the
Effect of one aspect on another.

A change like this had never been made before and Roosevelt faced some antagonistic Democrats who
sided with the Republicans in voting down Roosevelt s new laws. To cope with this dilemma, he made
another change and introduced the Caucus System whereby Democrats would meet outside Congress
and decide on how they would vote. Pro Roosevelt democrats would out vote the anti, and the
decision was binding on all. The second major change made, was that Roosevelt increased the power
of the Executive Branch, altering the balance of the three branches. Roosevelt took many more
branches of Government under White House Control (e.g. the FBI), and massively increased the size
of the White House staff. The third major change was that he became the first President to notably use
the media as a way of communicating and advertising to the nation.
However, he did have one major failure. After announcing his New Deal Laws, The Supreme Court
declared some of them unconstitutional, E.g. the NRA, and had a 6/5 majority win. So Roosevelt tried
to change the rules and proposed to appoint new judges in the Supreme Court whenever a judge
reached 70, instead of when a judge retired. Unfortunately, Congress (including the Democrats,)
rejected this plan as a violation of constitution it would turn the Role of the President into the role of
Dictator. In the end, the only reason the New Deal s could go ahead

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADHD)
There are many different types of learning disorders in the world today. The two most common are
ADHD (Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder), ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder). Today s
classrooms have changed drastically since the 1950 s. Some of the differences would be class sizes,
technology, and learning disabilities. One of the biggest changes in today s education world is the
abundance of students with some sort of learning disability. Studies have showed that there are more
and more ways to help deal with kids that can t seem stay focused. There are many different ways that
teachers can handle students with a learning condition. The three newest types are allowing kids to

But I also build in transitions every 15 minutes or so that require movement (to get into groups, turn
something in, write on a paper covered wall, etc). I have little to no fidgeting problems or issues with
attention loss. (Gonzalez). the first thing that needs to happen for Albemarle teachers to successfully
create a flexible classroom is: The teacher must have a vision for his or her room. He/she must be
willing to say, I m going to throw out some of this stuff. I don t need this traditional schooling
equipment. When kids move around the room, it allows them to feel more at home. Think about it,
when kids are at home doing homework, they aren t sitting at a desk. They are either at the kitchen
table, couch, in their bed, or on the floor. They aren t sitting at a desk sitting on a hard chair. They
more than likely can sit more comfortably while doing work at home vs when they are at school. The
students can have a choice of clipboards, the floor, end tables, coffee tables to write on when they re
moving around the classroom (Gonzalez). This makes it easier for the students to write when they re
getting comfy around the room. The average attention span of an eight year old is 6.26 seconds
(Ismall). So clearly, that doesn t give a lot of time to engage a kid and get them involved in an activity.
The key to getting a student involved, is keeping them interested. If a child isn t interested, they aren t

The Nature of the Avant Garde in Late Modernism
THE NATURE OF THE AVANT GARDE IN LATE MODERNISM It is a reasonable fact that the
culture of art or the visual art culture changes in direct proportion with the social and political changes
in societies and around the world. For example the South African arts, in music, performance, poetry
and visual arts of today cannot be equated to that of the 1950s and 60s when apartheid laws were just
being newly introduced and imparted into societies and simply as a result the peoples struggle or
resistance was very relevant. The struggle or resistance to bring about social change, was not only
through uprisings, violent protests or demonstrations, but the arts on the other hand was involved and
has been in history, always as a usable element to voice up and act up for the voiceless, unheard and
ignored when it is very necessary, due to dissatisfactions of a society or a nation with its leadership or
an injustice perform by a state or a government that can no longer be tolerated by its people or any
people. The arts have been always able to question the unquestioned and even able to simplify
problems and bring solutions especially during the modern age of industrial revolution, for example
today in the case of an architectural, vehicle or any structural design, the first step would be to draw,
paint, digitize and sample build a plan, before building an actual structure, and art is involved in all
these procedures. Brave and politically motivated men in history, stood up on

Additionally to third degree price discrimination, the supplier(s) of a market where this type of
discrimination is exhibited are capable of differentiating between consumer classes. Examples of this
differentiation are student or senior discounts. For example, a student or a senior consumer will have a
different willingness to pay than an average consumer, where the reservation price is presumably
lower because of budget constraints. Thus, the supplier sets a lower price for that consumer because
the student or senior has a more elastic price elasticity of demand. The supplier is once again capable
of capturing more market surplus than would be possible without price discrimination. Third Degree

Reflective Essay On I Am Malala
While many American teenagers complain about their wish for the never ending school days to end,
children around the world are fighting for their right to attend school. Malala, a Pakistani girl, fought
for not only her education but the education of all Pakistani girls. Malala once knew her country as a
peaceful place, before it was terrorized by the Taliban s. They took away all the rights of women, such
as restricting young girls from attending school. As a way of campaigning, the Taliban s bombed a
variety of girl schools and killed everyone who disobeyed them. With parents who taught Malala to
stand up for what she believes, she began to take the steps, such as continuing to go to school and
speak against the Taliban s ideas, to demonstrate her want to continue to receive an education.
However, the Taliban s realized Malala s tactics and soon came after her. Being known as a survivor,
Malala could inform many people of her strong hopes to raise voice on behalf of the millions of girls
who have been denied the right to receive an education, through her inspirational tone, in her book I
Am Malala. Malala never thought Pakistan would be ruled by terrorists whose main goal was to
abolish the rights of young schoolgirls. However, she did not let anyone interfere with her right to
learn. As the Taliban became more and more powerful, scare had increased towards the children who
attended the school Malala s father, Ziauddin, owned, leading to a decrease in the girls and

Led Zeppelin
Led Zeppelin were never afraid to try new musical directions, drawing inspiration from such styles as
blues, rock, folk, country (and everything in between!) to create a unique sound that almost defies
description, probably the most appropriate way to describe their vast repertoire is simply as Led
Zeppelin . During their reign they created one of the most enduring and diverse catalogues in modern
music and firmly secured their status as one of the most influential groups ever (probably second only
to The Beatles!).
Throughout their years at the top they were shrouded in mystery and intrigue, and seemed to leave
behind a trail of question marks wherever they went. They were not a public band (they didn t hire a ...

Compared to previous reels, these exist in almost mixed and completed form. There are however, a
number of differences to report as they mix down the material enthusiastically.
Darlene, played in a happy upbeat major key opens with a one, two, three, four allegro tempo count in
from John Bonham, which gives the song quadruple meter. Very similar to the take that eventually
surfaced on Coda , it pummels along in friendly conjunct legato form, live in the studio style. This is
clearly a consonant harmony, exemplifying verse and chorus form. Robert Plant s vocal mix set can be
detected after the Pink carnation and a pick up truck line. From that point he accompanies Jimmy Page
s delightful fortissimo solo adding, I don t care what they say, I love you anyway, I ll drive you wild .
Like most of these Polar mixes, instead of fading out; the homophonic track grinds to a halt with a
tinkling of John Paul Jones electric piano played mezzo forte.
The version of Fool In The Rain, played in major key show this composition nearing its completed
verse and chorus mix. Some of the studio banter retained from Polar demonstrates the fun atmosphere
that the four were working in. The beginning of Fool In The Rain, is forte, after Page counts in two,
three Plant wades in with a quatro! giving this song its allegretto quadruple meter. This mix

Al Capone s Legacy
After he took over Johnny Torrio`s empire, it was clear that his status in gangster world had changed.
He was a big man in the Chicago underworld. Chicago was a smart place to build an illegal business,
because at that time Chicago was a hard drinking town that was open to anyone who had enough
money. The city became well known for its political corruption, wealth and sexual promiscuity. When
Capone came to the city, the flesh trade was becoming the province of organized crime. Al Capone
had many illegal business, they ranged from the most profitable bootlegging to gambling and
prostitution. In 1929 his business was worth of one hundred and five million dollars (Al Capone). In
2009 this amount was equal to 1,319,729,655 $. Apple sports a stock market value of $530 billion the

Every single business was bringing millions of dollars. Bootlegging has made sixty million dollars,
twenty five million dollars from gambling, twenty million dollars from other illegal business (Al

dyeing or cleaning companies, and many other little business. He may have done a lot of wrong, but
Capone was a philanthropist (Bardsley). Just like Robin Hood, he was stealing from the rich and
giving to the poor. He donated money for the opera, jazz, shelters for homeless people, soup kitchens,
and even after school programs to help the youth of Chicago and keep them out of criminal world
(Bardsley). Eighteenth amendment banned all alcohol in the United States and it was known as
Prohibition. Many blue collar workers in US were either alcoholics or enjoyed couple of drinks every

by supplying a public demand. If I break the law, my customers who number hundreds of the best

Essay On The Iran Deal
The debate around the Iran Deal is a funny thing. Most political debates revolving around foreign
policy focus on typical partisan divides. As a conservative, I may have ideologically been opposed to
much of the Obama era (and Trump era) policy. From the sequence of withdrawal in Iraq to military
sequestration, I wholeheartedly believe that former President Obama s foreign policy was a complete
and utter disaster.
My opposition to the Iran Deal goes far beyond ideology. It is the single most evil thing Obama did
during his eight year tenure. This deal makes America less strong, Israel far less safe, and emboldens
terrorists. For those of you who have forgotten, let s briefly review the main contents of this travesty.
The Obama ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, all of which I have said thus far is not my main objection to the deal. The most nefarious
element of the deal is the billions of dollars given in sanction relief to the American enemy of Iran, the
number one state sponsor of terror. It is hard to fathom the rationale of Obama and his aides when
negotiating this monstrosity. According to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Iran will
receive hundreds of billions of dollars to fuel their terror and military regime. And this truth has since
been corroborated. Just last August, details emerged of an apparent scheme between Secretary Kerry s
State Department and Iran, with approximately $1.3 billion in sanction reliefs delivered by plane to
Tehran at the same time four American hostages were released.
No one is disputing the fact that likely over one hundred billion dollars are expected to be dished out
to Iran under the Iran Deal. What is the significance of this? In 2016, the US State Department
declared Iran the number on state sponsor of terrorism. This should surprise no one, as for decades the
brutal Islamic Republic has waged war against America and Israel. Secretary Kerry himself admitted,
back in January 2016, that some of it will end up in the hands of the IRGC or other entities, some of
which are labeled terrorists. Anti semitic (and anti American) terrorist groups such as Hamas and
Hezbollah, which are insistent on waging destruction

Cost of Living
Measuring the Cost of Living
Overview:
Last time we discussed the most important measure of economic well being real, per capita GDP.
Further, if we want to see how our economic well being is changing over time, we can calculate how
real GDP is changing in percentage terms (for example, real GDP grew 4% last quarter).
Now, we turn our attention to another important measure of the economy.
We want to measure how the cost of living changes over time.
The main intuition here is that, over time, peoples incomes and the prices of goods and services
increase. 30 years ago an ice cream sundae cost $1 and a typical economics professor earned $35,000.
Now, a (bad) ice cream sundae costs $4.50 and a typical economics professor ... Show more content

We have to figure out what a typical consumer buys. Imagine a shopping cart you fill it up with items
that a typical consumer will purchase.
Step 2: Find the prices:
Now that we have our basket, we can track prices on the items in the cart and see how much it all
costs.
Step 3: Compute the cost of the basket:
Let s determine the cost of the basket from year to year
Step 4: Choose a base year, and compute the index:
Pick a year to serve as a benchmark a comparison basket cost for all other years. We then can use the
cost in benchmark year (called a base year ) relative to the cost of the cart in the year we are interested
in to calculate a cost if living index.
Step 5: Compute the inflation rate:
This is easy: just calculate how the index changes from year to year in percentage terms.
To see these steps in action, consider the following example (from the textbook):
Step 1: Fix the basket:
Well, suppose that what we see consumers typically buying are 4 hot dogs and 2 hamburgers that is
what is in their shopping cart...
Step 2: Find the price of each good in each year:
This is just observing prices every year...
Year: Price of hot dogs: Price of hamburgers:
2001 $1 $2
2002: $2 $3
2003: $3 $4
Step 3: Compute the cost of the basket in each year:
Let s see how much the stuff in the cart costs from year to year...

Howard Becker (1963) was the main theorist that constructed the modern labelling theory in the
context of deviance. In his research, Becker (1963) finds that when individuals or a particular group s
actions or characteristics have been labelled as deviant by the wider society, it brands this individual
or group for life. The effect of this label is so powerful that Becker s research discovered that
individuals and groups that have been branded as deviant begin to be associated with the word deviant
. As a result all other characteristics and roles this individual or group plays in society such as mother,
father or priest etc. all become dwarfed by this deviant label. Therefore it becomes so severe in some
cases that the deviant label becomes their sole identity (Becker 1963). ... Show more content on

Analysis Of Peggy Mcintoth And Male Privilege
In Peggy McIntosh s White Privilege and Male Privilege, she as a white woman herself was one of the
first people to acknowledge that white privilege is a phenomenon that is commonly overlooked in the
white race and made a point to think of many instances where white privilege was prominent. Peggy
McIntosh defines white privilege as, an invisible package of unearned assets that I can count on
cashing in each day, but about which I was meant to remain oblivious. White privilege is like an
invisible weightless knapsack of special provisions, maps, passports, codebooks, visas, clothes, tools,
and blank checks . To interpret this, she is saying that white privilege is an unacknowledged idea with
so many different parts and pieces to it, it is hard to classify it as just one thing. When she goes on in
the article listing situations where because of white privilege she would not have to be concerned
about the outcome; example 41 stated, I can be sure that if I need legal or medical help, my race will
not work against me (McIntosh). This example can be related to Brock Turners case given the
situation of him having legal trouble and having more things go for him during his trial rather than
having people working against him. It seems that the white race lives focusing on normalcy and
convenience, that when they are in a situation to help others they aim to make them more like
themselves (McIntosh). It only makes me wonder, how do they act when a more serious situation such
as rape is introduced, how it affects them. It seems that in tough situations, white privilege itself works
to show dominance and power over certain groups.
In Allan R. White s article Privilege, he takes a similar stance to McIntosh in regard to the fact that
privilege does not take one specific form. Although White does not primarily focus on the aspects of
white privilege, it is important to understand both parts of the phrase to get an understanding of its
whole definition. It is helpful to look at the word privilege separate from race to understand the forms
it can potentially take. Allan White defines privilege as, A notion coordinate with right, duty, liberty,
power, and immunity that someone or something has in virtue of being singled

Learning And Science Inquiry Skills
Learning dispositions and Science Inquiry Skills:
Carr (2008, Para.2) says: It is not about the blocks or the dough. It is about the activity being the
vehicle for the acquisition of the disposition to learn. Dispositions are voluntary and frequent habits of
doing and thinking. They are environmentally sensitive as they could be acquired and supported by
the interactive experiences in an environment with adults, peers and the nature around them (Bertram
Pascal 2002; Aitken, Hunt, Roy Sajfar, 2012).
The Early Years Learning Framework lists different dispositions of learning. They ordered them as
follows curiosity, creativity, commitment, persistence, cooperation, enthusiasm, imagination,
reflexivity and confidence (DEEWR, 2009).
Curiosity is the opportunity that the child has to enhance his or her exploration skills using different
senses. It also helps the children to extend no their learning (Aitken, Hunt, Roy Sajfar, 2012;
Buckingham Shum Deakin Crick, 2012). For example, Tanya and Rayana demonstrated their curiosity
as they focused on observing what would happen to the water when the oil was added. Then, they
used their understanding to compare between mixing different substances together as some will mix
while others will not.
Children can show confidence in their abilities which is linked to their enthusiasm about different
learning experiences (Da Ros Voseles Fowler Haughey, 2007). Rayana and Tanya demonstrated a

Richard Branson Leadership

Richard Branson was born in England in 1950. Since a little kid, he was encouraged to be independent

struggling at school due to dyslexia, and ended up dropping from school at age of 16. It was the
beginning of an entrepreneurial career. At that time he founded a Magazine called Student with great

Improving Existing Sites For New Infrastructure Development
Introduction
Globalized populations heavily rely on ecosystems but allow non ecosystem services to take priority.
In the past hundred years human and ecological systems have undergone large transformations due to
globalization and weathering affects. The world s most valued resources are becoming increasingly
scarce. The growth in population has changed the supply and demand of both ecosystem and non
ecosystem services (Cumming, 2014). Urbanization has created a trend of creation rather than using or
limiting resources. New infrastructure development continues and has become priority opposed to

Topsoil continues to be eroded away, while water is wastefully used because the source seems so
abundant. As globalization values an economic stance, considering vital resources in monetary
amounts can allow for further conservation. In an attempt to place greater value on these necessities,
considering resources as ecosystem services places a monetary value on natural sources.
Background
The preservation of ecosystems resources is essential to sustain and provide for life forms. Both soil
and water are rich, complex ecosystems, which support living and non living matter. Soil plays a great
role in supporting large concentrations of people on the planet (Montgomery). It has played a part in
helping society to progress through infrastructure development and agricultural growth however can
determine the faith of modern civilization. The existence of soil is essential if human activity is to
continue. Human activity adds a wide variety of substances to the environmental, which soils can
decompose. Soil plays a central role in the management, processing and detoxification of natural and
human created waste. In soil countering the actions of humans, it is continuously under appreciated.
To sustain life forms including human populations water is heavily relied on. Water appears to be an
abundance source however; little conservation is had for the commodity. There are no alternatives to
the source yet saving the resource is not an action deeply practiced

The World Is Blue By Sylvia Earle
Nikki Etchenique Dr. Harper Marine Biology November 24, 2014 The World is Blue Final Paper In
2009, Dr. Sylvia Earle wrote The World is Blue to educate and alert the reader about human impacts
on marine ecosystems. Through this book she conveys her passion and methodical arguments
concerning the importance of the conservation of the ocean, which encompasses approximately 80
percent of the earth s surface. Dr. Earle states the ocean touches you with every breath you take, every
drop of water you drink, every bite you consume (17). This statement emphasizes the significance of
the ocean, not only for marine life, but all life forms on earth. The book implies that currently in today
s world, the conservation of the ocean requires a global effort to reduce human damage from the past
generations. Using facts gleaned from credible scientific resources, she defines the problems of
overfishing, bycatch, and pollution. By analyzing human impacts on marine ecosystems, Dr. Earle
determines successful and unsuccessful solutions to these problems and suggests various ways
individuals can change their lifestyles to reduce impact on the environment as a whole. One may find
it difficult to imagine the world as it was a century ago. However, Dr. Earle informs us that with less
than a quarter of the population occupying the Earth, many believed that the ocean could yield
limitless quantities of fish, whales, and other marine wildlife (30). Through her book, she points out

The Italian Renaissance was the start of a strongly religious, cultural and artistic revolution throughout
Western history, which was dominated by the catholic church. The church was seen as the highest
authority due to the fact that they were literate and well educated, and seen as a safe haven to seek
refuge from hell, gods punishment, and the plagues. Although the church was the heart of life during
the Renaissance, it all began to change, as seen through artists such as Michelangelo s painting in the

indulgences became a huge part of their plan. Sales of indulgences was an immense thing for the

To avoid such a penalty they would feel guilty and would pay a certain expense to the church to flee

During Washington Irving s short story The Legend of Sleepy Hollow , the main focus tends to be on

Psychology is an academic and applied discipline involving the scientific study of mental processes

The school of thought known as structuralism was initiated by Edward Titchener, one of Wundt s
students. This school of thought was called structuralism because of Titchener s interest in the
structural make up of consciousness. It was Ticthener s hope to devise a table of the levels, or
elements of human consciousness using Wundt s introspection idea. Ticthener viewed psychology
scientifically. He believed that the only way to understand psychology was through experimentation.
This eventually led to the idea that sensation and feelings were unscientific because it could not be
measured by anyone but the person experiencing it. The second school of thought that was popular in
psychology s beginning was known as functionalism. This school of though focused on the role
psychological processes have on helping people adapt to their surroundings. Functionalists believe
that consciousness exists because it serves a function (Kowalski Westen, 2005). William James, one of
the founders of functionalism, set out to explain why we think the way that we do. These two schools
of thought branch out even further to offer assumptions or perspectives on these theories.

While it was initially thought that borderline personality disorder was more common in women, new
data confirms that the prevalence is equal among the sexes. Along with this, research identified high
rates of comorbidity with mood, anxiety and substance use disorders [4]. Patients with BPD have a 50
fold higher rate of suicide than the general population [5 ] (Nelson). However, it was also discovered
within recent history that the prognosis for borderline personality disorder is shockingly favorable, in
contrast with the previous notion that it was chronic and practically untreatable. Over the course of ten
years of treatment, borderline personality disorder has a high rate of remission combined with a low
rate of relapsing symptoms. At a follow up, after sixteen years, remission rates continued to be high,

The Cask Of Amontillado By Edgar Alan Poe
In Platizky s (1999) article on the Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Alan Poe is choppy and, sometimes,
wandering critique. Albeit, the historical reference Platizky uses on how Poe ambiguously capitalizes
on psychological fear and historical reality (p. 206), is the ultimate essence of the article which sets a
novice reader on the right path to understanding the story. Platizky s use of historical facts and sources
leads me to believe this article could help provoke a logical thought process for anyone to understand
the fascination, and or fear, of being buried alive and the symbols used within the story.
Platizky s article jumps from point to point with no clear direction. The order of Platizky transition s
could be more concise; instead of jumping from Poe s earlier work, to tidbits of history, to the
symbolism of points in the story, back to more historical references, and finally a weak conclusion that
leaves readers wanting closure. This fact is not forthcoming of an adequate flow to follow. The flow is
comparative to a Quentin Tarantino film jumping back and forth in the time line of the plot.
Another aspect where Platizky s article lacks clear direction is through the explanation of the story s
symbols and how they are historically tied. The statement of how the catacombs could be symbolic

The Power of Hip-hop in the Business World Essay
Since its conception, Hip Hop culture has always been popular among young people. Now businesses
are beginning to use Hip Hop cultures popularity among the young people to increase the sales of their
products. By advertising fashion, films and other miscellaneous types of products businesses use the
hip hop culture to appeal to a target audience. Since the late 1970s, Hip Hop fashion has changed
significantly over the years. As the future approaches it has become a prominent part of the fashion
world as a whole across the world and for all ethnicities. During the 1980s, fashion consisted of

This was acceptable for a time, but after a while it occurred to Russell Simmons, the president of Run
DMC s label Def Jam Records, that the group should be getting paid for the promotion they were
giving to Adidas. He approached the German shoe company about kicking in some money for the act s
1987 Together Forever Tour. Adidas executives had a skeptical reaction about being associated with
rap music, which at that time was known for starting riots. To help change their minds, Simmons
invited a couple of Adidas representatives to a Run DMC show. Christopher Vaughn describes the
event in Black Enterprise: At a crucial moment, while the rap group was performing the song My
Adidas , one of the members yelled out, Okay, everybody in the house, rock your Adidas! This
resulted with three thousand pairs of sneakers shot in the air. The Adidas executives couldn t reach for
their checkbooks fast enough. By the time of the annual Atlanta sports shoe Super Show that year,
Adidas had unveiled its new line of Run DMC shoes: the Super Star and the Ultra Star designed to be
worn without laces state Russell Simmons. Before big fashion companies paid any attention to hip
hop, small independent fashion designers supported the hip hop community through local retail stores.
According to Brian McDaniel s, co owner of Uncle Ralph s, a hip hop clothing store located in
Brooklyn, these young designers tend to be more in tune with hip hop culture. Not all

The Phoenicians Research Paper
The Phoenicians: The Master Traders of the Mediterranean World The Mediterranean Sea is home to
many great civilizations in our early history. The Ancient Greeks and Romans established their
empires in this region and their cultural contributions have greatly influenced the development of
modern Western culture. Unlike the Ancient Greek and Roman civilizations, there is one
Mediterranean civilization that did not have a land centric empire. The Phoenicians are the first
civilization to create a long distance sea trading network in the ancient Mediterranean world. This
trading network is significant in ancient Mediterranean history because archaeological remains

According to the Phoenician Maritime Religion: Sailors, Goddess Worship, and the Grotta Regina
article, the Phoenicians constructed their ships or galleys differently from each other because, a trader
will want his ship to have certain attributes necessary for his trading voyage. These attributes include
the overall size of the ship, the amount of cargo and the durability of the ship while using different
trade routes during its voyage (Christian 2013:181). One example, which features an archaeological
analysis of an ancient Phoenician galley is in the Iron Age Shipwrecks in Deep Water off Ashkelon,
Israel article. This article features a discovery of a sunken Phoenician galley called the Tanit located
near modern day Israel in 1997. Archaeologists working on this project dated the Tanit around 750
BCE which was around the time the Phoenician trading network expanded throughout the different
regions of the Mediterranean. The archaeologists have also discovered several artifacts within the
galley and these artifacts are well persevered because they were left undisturbed for thousands of
years at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea. These artifacts include bronze bowls, incense stands,
cooking pots and pottery in a shape of a large U shaped container called an

This was then measured and 85 mm was found to be the appropriate length. The core was cut for the
sliding screw without complication using a pre set reamor set at 85 mm. The tap was then used to tap
the way for the proximal screw and an 85 mm sliding screw was inserted across the fracture sight into
the head and neck without complication. A four hole 135 degree side plate was then attached. We slid
it over the depwheeze sliding screw and attached it to the proximal femur using a lommen turkey claw
clamp. With the fixation in place AP and lateral fluoroscopic images throughout the fracture sight and
hardware position confirmed good reduction and good placement of the hardware. At this point the
side plate was then secured to the proximal femur using the 3 2 drill bit to drill a hole measuring the
approximate length with the depth gauge and placing 4 5 cortical screws of the appropriate length
without complication. At this point the compression screw was inserted. All traction was left off and
the compression screw was tightened impacting the fracture nicely. All screws were then tightened

Artist of Still Life Paintings
Field Trip to Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, Hagerstown, MD Presented by Darren
Mohamed, Wilson College.
(#2) Hello everyone. In this presentation, I shall spotlight still life art by exploring the life and works
of Robert Spear Dunning and his contemporaries, who distinguished themselves by their use of this
style. (#3) Still Life Art has been around since ancient times. This is a Still Life painting by ancient
Egyptians Offerings to the Gods . Note that the objects are barely recognizable

(#19) Our attention is held by the many luscious fruits cramming a silver platter. Notice the fruits are
abundant from different seasons. Several fruits have leaves on them indicating their freshness and
wholeness. The artist uses a normal view, balanced composition and a mix of vivid hues
(#20) Depth is added by the red and dark curtains in the background and the paintings on the walls
behind the fruit. Looking down on the fruits expands our horizontal view. The value is mid range dark
and contrasts with the brighter colors of the fruits and platter
(#21) Dunning often uses this Victorian style dining room setting, seen in many homes around this
period. This setting adds a purely sensual and luxurious appeal to the work
(#22) Dunning is famed for use of glitter and antiquity in his paintings as seen in this painting
Cherries. His paintings of fruits and flowers are usually on a tabletop as seen here...

Essay on The Myth of Sisyphus
The Myth of Sisyphus Sisyphus is the absurd hero. This man, sentenced to ceaselessly rolling a rock
to the top of a mountain and then watching it roll back down, is the epitome of the absurd hero
according to Camus. In retelling the Myth of Sisyphus, Camus is able to create an extremely powerful
image which sums up the intellectual discussion which comes before it in the book. We are told that
Sisyphus is the absurd hero as much through his passions as through his torture. His scorn of the gods,
his hatred of death, and his passion for life won him that unspeakable penalty in which the whole
being is exerted toward accomplishing nothing. (p.89). Sisyphus is conscious of his troubles , and ...

In these essays Camus looks the problem of suicide. In a shocking, unnerving manner he opens with
the bold statement that: There is but one truly serious philosophical problem and that is suicide. (p. 3).
He goes on to discover if suicide is a real answer to the human who is unhappy with life. Or if life is
worth living now that god is dead? The discussion begins and continues not as a metaphysical cobweb
but as a well reasoned statement based on a way of knowing which Camus holds is the only
epistemology we have at our command. We know only two things: This heart within me I can feel,
and I judge that it exists. This world I can touch, and I likewise judge that it exists. There ends all my
knowledge, and the rest is construction. (p. 14) With these as the basic certainties of the human
condition, Camus argues that there is no meaning to life. He disapproves of the many philosophers
who have played on words and pretended to believe that refusing to grant a meaning to life necessarily
leads to declaring that it is not worth living. (p.7) Life has no absolute meaning. In spite of the human
s irrational nostalgia for unity, for absolutes, for a definite order and meaning to the not me of the
universe, no such meaning exists in the silent, indifferent universe. Between this yearning for meaning
and eternal verities and the actual condition

Conuncianitarianism And Confucianism
Confucianism does not explicitly encourage war given its emphasis on humanity. This combination of
moral vision and political realism combined with his advocacy of strong political authorities that
nevertheless rule justly in service of the common good. Xunzi s vision of the good society and how it
fits into a multi state world which undergirds his critique of alternate discourses about war and the
government. Xunzian s vision of politics and war as a source for contemporary Confucian theory of
civilian military relations. The early Confucian figure Xunzi (xunzi, during 310 c. 220 BCE) gives a
sophisticated analysis of war, which he develops on the basis of a larger social and political vision that
he works out in considerable detail. This larger vision of human society is thoroughly normative in the
sense that Xunzi both argues for the value of his ideal conception of society, and relates these moral
arguments for the Confucian Dao or Way. Xunzi s led him to argue about war in ways that look
distinctive to Western ethicists, but still his preferred issues are revealing themselves as suggestive in
relation to current debates in military ethics. Judaism does not regard violence and war to promote
justice as always wrong. It accepts that certain kinds of war will be ethically justified, and that it is
sometimes morally acceptable to kill people. Before declaring war or starting a battle there must be a
genuine attempt to make peace and avoid the conflict. In much

New Housing Advantages And Disadvantages
WHO BENEFITS? New transport infrastructure creates value and there are many stakeholders who
benefit from well places and designed transport infrastructure. To seek a portion of this newly created
value, you firstly need to identify and beneficiaries. Existing residents as many studies have proven,
property prices increase once a major new transport infrastructure is announced. Residents do not need
to wait for the infrastructure to be built, as prices have been shown to increase as early as the initial
announcement. Residents all benefit from reduced congestion, faster and more reliable journey times,
improved quality of life. Research showed that Melbourne s City Link had created increased land
value of $30 billion. The Southern Railway in Perth showed that there was an uplift in value over 5
years by 42% above base value uplift for properties in station precincts. For every kilometres a
dwelling in Brisbane was located in proximity of a ferry terminal there was an increase of 4% in price.
In London research found that property within easy reach of a station was worth on average 20,000
pounds more than other properties. Another benefit New residents will benefit in purchasing a home in
a newly developed area, without having to pay premium city prices with the ability to commute in a
reasonable time to the CBD with the creation of a new railway line. Ongoing benefits will be achieved
with new areas providing a much needed economic activity leading to market

  • 4. Antigone As A Tragic Hero Antigone is a tragedy by the ancient Greek playwright Sophocles, which depicts two extraordinary cases for a tragic hero. Both Creon and Antigone are the principal characters of the play to be tragic heroes. A tragic hero is a character who is known for being noble and has an imperfection that helps to his or her destruction. Creon and Antigone are honorable and defective in their own particular manners, having a comparative deplorable imperfection. The greatest golfer ever known as Tiger Woods is portrayed as a modern day tragic hero because of his flaw of over the top pride leading to the decimation of his profession and relationship. Tiger takes responsibility for his actions, yet it is too late and he would has to tolerate the inevitable consequences. Antigone is portrayed as a character who is very proud her pride is one of the elements that causes her downfall. Antigone has her mind set on burying her brother Polyneices and she will stop at nothing until she does what will bring her great glory. Creon remains firm on his decision, anyone who pursues to bury Polyneices, the one who attacked the city, will be punished by death. Antigone is also described as egotistical in the way that she reveals to her sister who won t become involved with Polyneices burial oh tell it! Tell everyone! Think how they ll hate you when it all comes out if they learn you knew about it all the time. She additionally spares her pride and ego as the Choragos comments Like father, like ... • 5. Parent Relationships And Its Effect On A Child s Development Parent relationships play a huge role in a child s development. A child learns what is appropriate, how to behave, and are shown what a healthy marriage looks like. If their parent s relationship concludes in divorce, they will not see a truly successful relationship, causing the child to have some short and long term effects that can hinder them in their life. Homosexual marriage also has some lasting effects on a child because of the irregular parenting style in a society where heterosexual marriage is most common. Divorce and homosexual marriage can create potential adverse short and long term effects, demonstrating that heterosexual marriage is in the best interest of the children. Many children go through a divorce at some point in their life. Statistics show that in a year, approximately one million children under eighteen experience their parent s divorce; putting it into perspective, this is about forty percent of children (Matthews 1). Since 1960, the divorce rate has been doubling just about every decade until 1990, and currently has leveled off at that rate (Gallagher 1). Amy Desai researched psychologist, Judith Wallerstein, who performed a study where she interviewed children of a divorce eighteen months, five, ten, fifteen and twenty five years after the divorce of their parents. After twenty five years, she states, Even 25 years after the divorce, these children continued to experience substantial expectations of failure, fear of loss, fear of change, and ... The Most Significant Aspect of Roosevelt s Presidency and New Deal up to 1941 In this essay I am going to be assessing which was the most significant aspect of Franklin Delano Roosevelt s Presidency, by looking at four different aspects of it, and then applying tests to each aspect. I will be looking into Roosevelt s Economic Policies, Economic Ideas, Role of the Presidency and the Electoral performance of the Democratic party and then, applying the following tests to them: Firstly, the Amount of change, then the Immediate effects, then the Long term effects, and finally the Effect of one aspect on another. Roosevelt s economic ideas were clearly different to those of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A change like this had never been made before and Roosevelt faced some antagonistic Democrats who sided with the Republicans in voting down Roosevelt s new laws. To cope with this dilemma, he made another change and introduced the Caucus System whereby Democrats would meet outside Congress and decide on how they would vote. Pro Roosevelt democrats would out vote the anti, and the decision was binding on all. The second major change made, was that Roosevelt increased the power of the Executive Branch, altering the balance of the three branches. Roosevelt took many more branches of Government under White House Control (e.g. the FBI), and massively increased the size of the White House staff. The third major change was that he became the first President to notably use the media as a way of communicating and advertising to the nation. However, he did have one major failure. After announcing his New Deal Laws, The Supreme Court declared some of them unconstitutional, E.g. the NRA, and had a 6/5 majority win. So Roosevelt tried to change the rules and proposed to appoint new judges in the Supreme Court whenever a judge reached 70, instead of when a judge retired. Unfortunately, Congress (including the Democrats,) rejected this plan as a violation of constitution it would turn the Role of the President into the role of Dictator. In the end, the only reason the New Deal s could go ahead ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The two most common are ADHD (Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder), ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder). Today s classrooms have changed drastically since the 1950 s. Some of the differences would be class sizes, technology, and learning disabilities. One of the biggest changes in today s education world is the abundance of students with some sort of learning disability. Studies have showed that there are more and more ways to help deal with kids that can t seem stay focused. There are many different ways that teachers can handle students with a learning condition. But I also build in transitions every 15 minutes or so that require movement (to get into groups, turn something in, write on a paper covered wall, etc). I have little to no fidgeting problems or issues with attention loss. (Gonzalez). the first thing that needs to happen for Albemarle teachers to successfully create a flexible classroom is: The teacher must have a vision for his or her room. He/she must be willing to say, I m going to throw out some of this stuff. I don t need this traditional schooling equipment. When kids move around the room, it allows them to feel more at home. Think about it, when kids are at home doing homework, they aren t sitting at a desk. They are either at the kitchen table, couch, in their bed, or on the floor. They aren t sitting at a desk sitting on a hard chair. They more than likely can sit more comfortably while doing work at home vs when they are at school. The students can have a choice of clipboards, the floor, end tables, coffee tables to write on when they re moving around the classroom (Gonzalez). This makes it easier for the students to write when they re getting comfy around the room. The average attention span of an eight year old is 6.26 seconds (Ismall). So clearly, that doesn t give a lot of time to engage a kid and get them involved in an activity. The key to getting a student involved, is keeping them interested. • 8. The Nature of the Avant Garde in Late Modernism THE NATURE OF THE AVANT GARDE IN LATE MODERNISM It is a reasonable fact that the culture of art or the visual art culture changes in direct proportion with the social and political changes in societies and around the world. For example the South African arts, in music, performance, poetry and visual arts of today cannot be equated to that of the 1950s and 60s when apartheid laws were just being newly introduced and imparted into societies and simply as a result the peoples struggle or resistance was very relevant. The struggle or resistance to bring about social change, was not only through uprisings, violent protests or demonstrations, but the arts on the other hand was involved and has been in history, always as a usable element to voice up and act up for the voiceless, unheard and ignored when it is very necessary, due to dissatisfactions of a society or a nation with its leadership or an injustice perform by a state or a government that can no longer be tolerated by its people or any people. The arts have been always able to question the unquestioned and even able to simplify problems and bring solutions especially during the modern age of industrial revolution, for example today in the case of an architectural, vehicle or any structural design, the first step would be to draw, paint, digitize and sample build a plan, before building an actual structure, and art is involved in all these procedures. Different pricing methods place varying degree of emphasis on selection, estimation, and evaluation of costs, comparative analysis, and market situation. Additionally to third degree price discrimination, the supplier(s) of a market where this type of discrimination is exhibited are capable of differentiating between consumer classes. Examples of this differentiation are student or senior discounts. For example, a student or a senior consumer will have a different willingness to pay than an average consumer, where the reservation price is presumably lower because of budget constraints. Thus, the supplier sets a lower price for that consumer because the student or senior has a more elastic price elasticity of demand. The supplier is once again capable of capturing more market surplus than would be possible without price discrimination. • 10. Reflective Essay On I Am Malala While many American teenagers complain about their wish for the never ending school days to end, children around the world are fighting for their right to attend school. Malala, a Pakistani girl, fought for not only her education but the education of all Pakistani girls. Malala once knew her country as a peaceful place, before it was terrorized by the Taliban s. They took away all the rights of women, such as restricting young girls from attending school. As a way of campaigning, the Taliban s bombed a variety of girl schools and killed everyone who disobeyed them. With parents who taught Malala to stand up for what she believes, she began to take the steps, such as continuing to go to school and speak against the Taliban s ideas, to demonstrate her want to continue to receive an education. However, the Taliban s realized Malala s tactics and soon came after her. Being known as a survivor, Malala could inform many people of her strong hopes to raise voice on behalf of the millions of girls who have been denied the right to receive an education, through her inspirational tone, in her book I Am Malala. Malala never thought Pakistan would be ruled by terrorists whose main goal was to abolish the rights of young schoolgirls. However, she did not let anyone interfere with her right to learn. As the Taliban became more and more powerful, scare had increased towards the children who attended the school Malala s father, Ziauddin, owned, leading to a decrease in the girls and ... Led Zeppelin Essay Led Zeppelin Led Zeppelin were never afraid to try new musical directions, drawing inspiration from such styles as blues, rock, folk, country (and everything in between!) to create a unique sound that almost defies description, probably the most appropriate way to describe their vast repertoire is simply as Led Zeppelin . During their reign they created one of the most enduring and diverse catalogues in modern music and firmly secured their status as one of the most influential groups ever (probably second only to The Beatles!). Darlene, played in a happy upbeat major key opens with a one, two, three, four allegro tempo count in from John Bonham, which gives the song quadruple meter. Very similar to the take that eventually surfaced on Coda , it pummels along in friendly conjunct legato form, live in the studio style. This is clearly a consonant harmony, exemplifying verse and chorus form. Robert Plant s vocal mix set can be detected after the Pink carnation and a pick up truck line. From that point he accompanies Jimmy Page s delightful fortissimo solo adding, I don t care what they say, I love you anyway, I ll drive you wild . Like most of these Polar mixes, instead of fading out; the homophonic track grinds to a halt with a tinkling of John Paul Jones electric piano played mezzo forte. The version of Fool In The Rain, played in major key show this composition nearing its completed verse and chorus mix. Some of the studio banter retained from Polar demonstrates the fun atmosphere that the four were working in. • 13. Al Capone s Legacy After he took over Johnny Torrio`s empire, it was clear that his status in gangster world had changed. He was a big man in the Chicago underworld. Chicago was a smart place to build an illegal business, because at that time Chicago was a hard drinking town that was open to anyone who had enough money. The city became well known for its political corruption, wealth and sexual promiscuity. When Capone came to the city, the flesh trade was becoming the province of organized crime. Al Capone had many illegal business, they ranged from the most profitable bootlegging to gambling and prostitution. In 1929 his business was worth of one hundred and five million dollars (Al Capone). • 14. Essay On The Iran Deal The debate around the Iran Deal is a funny thing. Most political debates revolving around foreign policy focus on typical partisan divides. As a conservative, I may have ideologically been opposed to much of the Obama era (and Trump era) policy. From the sequence of withdrawal in Iraq to military sequestration, I wholeheartedly believe that former President Obama s foreign policy was a complete and utter disaster. My opposition to the Iran Deal goes far beyond ideology. It is the single most evil thing Obama did during his eight year tenure. This deal makes America less strong, Israel far less safe, and emboldens terrorists. For those of you who have forgotten, let s briefly review the main contents of this travesty. The Obama ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, all of which I have said thus far is not my main objection to the deal. The most nefarious element of the deal is the billions of dollars given in sanction relief to the American enemy of Iran, the number one state sponsor of terror. It is hard to fathom the rationale of Obama and his aides when negotiating this monstrosity. According to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Iran will receive hundreds of billions of dollars to fuel their terror and military regime. And this truth has since been corroborated. Just last August, details emerged of an apparent scheme between Secretary Kerry s State Department and Iran, with approximately $1.3 billion in sanction reliefs delivered by plane to Tehran at the same time four American hostages were released. No one is disputing the fact that likely over one hundred billion dollars are expected to be dished out to Iran under the Iran Deal. What is the significance of this? In 2016, the US State Department declared Iran the number on state sponsor of terrorism. This should surprise no one, as for decades the brutal Islamic Republic has waged war against America and Israel. Secretary Kerry himself admitted, back in January 2016, that some of it will end up in the hands of the IRGC or other entities, some of which are labeled terrorists. Further, if we want to see how our economic well being is changing over time, we can calculate how real GDP is changing in percentage terms (for example, real GDP grew 4% last quarter). Now, we turn our attention to another important measure of the economy. We want to measure how the cost of living changes over time. The main intuition here is that, over time, peoples incomes and the prices of goods and services increase. 30 years ago an ice cream sundae cost $1 and a typical economics professor earned $35,000. Step 3: Compute the cost of the basket: Let s determine the cost of the basket from year to year Step 4: Choose a base year, and compute the index: Pick a year to serve as a benchmark a comparison basket cost for all other years. We then can use the cost in benchmark year (called a base year ) relative to the cost of the cart in the year we are interested in to calculate a cost if living index. Step 5: Compute the inflation rate: This is easy: just calculate how the index changes from year to year in percentage terms. In his research, Becker (1963) finds that when individuals or a particular group s actions or characteristics have been labelled as deviant by the wider society, it brands this individual or group for life. The effect of this label is so powerful that Becker s research discovered that individuals and groups that have been branded as deviant begin to be associated with the word deviant . As a result all other characteristics and roles this individual or group plays in society such as mother, father or priest etc. all become dwarfed by this deviant label. • 20. Analysis Of Peggy Mcintoth And Male Privilege In Peggy McIntosh s White Privilege and Male Privilege, she as a white woman herself was one of the first people to acknowledge that white privilege is a phenomenon that is commonly overlooked in the white race and made a point to think of many instances where white privilege was prominent. Peggy McIntosh defines white privilege as, an invisible package of unearned assets that I can count on cashing in each day, but about which I was meant to remain oblivious. White privilege is like an invisible weightless knapsack of special provisions, maps, passports, codebooks, visas, clothes, tools, and blank checks . To interpret this, she is saying that white privilege is an unacknowledged idea with so many different parts and pieces to it, it is hard to classify it as just one thing. When she goes on in the article listing situations where because of white privilege she would not have to be concerned about the outcome; example 41 stated, I can be sure that if I need legal or medical help, my race will not work against me (McIntosh). This example can be related to Brock Turners case given the situation of him having legal trouble and having more things go for him during his trial rather than having people working against him. It seems that the white race lives focusing on normalcy and convenience, that when they are in a situation to help others they aim to make them more like themselves (McIntosh). It only makes me wonder, how do they act when a more serious situation such as rape is introduced, how it affects them. It seems that in tough situations, white privilege itself works to show dominance and power over certain groups. In Allan R. White s article Privilege, he takes a similar stance to McIntosh in regard to the fact that privilege does not take one specific form. Although White does not primarily focus on the aspects of white privilege, it is important to understand both parts of the phrase to get an understanding of its whole definition. It is helpful to look at the word privilege separate from race to understand the forms it can potentially take. Allan White defines privilege as, A notion coordinate with right, duty, liberty, power, and immunity that someone or something has in virtue of being singled ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is about the activity being the vehicle for the acquisition of the disposition to learn. Dispositions are voluntary and frequent habits of doing and thinking. They are environmentally sensitive as they could be acquired and supported by the interactive experiences in an environment with adults, peers and the nature around them (Bertram Pascal 2002; Aitken, Hunt, Roy Sajfar, 2012). The Early Years Learning Framework lists different dispositions of learning. The World Is Blue By Sylvia Earle Nikki Etchenique Dr. Harper Marine Biology November 24, 2014 The World is Blue Final Paper In 2009, Dr. Sylvia Earle wrote The World is Blue to educate and alert the reader about human impacts on marine ecosystems. Through this book she conveys her passion and methodical arguments concerning the importance of the conservation of the ocean, which encompasses approximately 80 percent of the earth s surface. Dr. Earle states the ocean touches you with every breath you take, every drop of water you drink, every bite you consume (17). This statement emphasizes the significance of the ocean, not only for marine life, but all life forms on earth. The book implies that currently in today s world, the conservation of the ocean requires a global effort to reduce human damage from the past generations. Using facts gleaned from credible scientific resources, she defines the problems of overfishing, bycatch, and pollution. By analyzing human impacts on marine ecosystems, Dr. Earle determines successful and unsuccessful solutions to these problems and suggests various ways individuals can change their lifestyles to reduce impact on the environment as a whole. One may find it difficult to imagine the world as it was a century ago. (Irving 20). Katrina is being manipulative with the men in her life, showing further that while witty, she can be vile as well. With Brom, it feels almost like Katrina had him wrapped around her finger. Thinking back to when he sabotaged her music lessons, she must have figured it was him, and yet rather than be angry she kept her affair with the two men going. • 38. Foundations of Psychology Foundations of Psychology Psychology is an academic and applied discipline involving the scientific study of mental processes and behavior. There is some tension between scientific psychology (with its program of empirical research) and applied psychology (dealing with a number of areas). Psychologists attempt to explain the mind and brain in the context of real life. In contrast neurologists utilize a physiological approach. Psychologists study such phenomena as perception, cognition, emotion, personality, behavior, and interpersonal relationships. Psychology also refers to the application of such knowledge to various spheres of human activity including issues related to daily life e.g. family, education, and work and the treatment of ... This school of thought was called structuralism because of Titchener s interest in the structural make up of consciousness. It was Ticthener s hope to devise a table of the levels, or elements of human consciousness using Wundt s introspection idea. Ticthener viewed psychology scientifically. He believed that the only way to understand psychology was through experimentation. This eventually led to the idea that sensation and feelings were unscientific because it could not be measured by anyone but the person experiencing it. The second school of thought that was popular in psychology s beginning was known as functionalism. This school of though focused on the role psychological processes have on helping people adapt to their surroundings. Functionalists believe that consciousness exists because it serves a function (Kowalski Westen, 2005). William James, one of the founders of functionalism, set out to explain why we think the way that we do. These two schools of thought branch out even further to offer assumptions or perspectives on these theories. • 39. The Effects Of Borderline Personality Disorders There s a tremendous need to implode the myths of mental illness, to put a face on it, to show people that a diagnosis does not have to lead to a painful and oblique life. Those are the words of Elyn R. Sacs, a successful woman who happens to carry a diagnosis of schizophrenia. Mental illness has been plagued by stigma and misunderstanding throughout history, due to a lack of necessary research by professionals as well as a lack of education for the public. The disorders which face the most stigma, both historically and in present times, are the more severe afflictions such as schizophrenia or personality disorders. While it was initially thought that borderline personality disorder was more common in women, new data confirms that the prevalence is equal among the sexes. Along with this, research identified high rates of comorbidity with mood, anxiety and substance use disorders [4]. Patients with BPD have a 50 fold higher rate of suicide than the general population [5 ] (Nelson). However, it was also discovered within recent history that the prognosis for borderline personality disorder is shockingly favorable, in contrast with the previous notion that it was chronic and practically untreatable. Over the course of ten years of treatment, borderline personality disorder has a high rate of remission combined with a low rate of relapsing symptoms. At a follow up, after sixteen years, remission rates continued to be high, and recovery rates were moderate (Nelson). One of the most notable processes involved in remission and recovery is dialectical behavior therapy, which is designed to treat chronically suicidal, multiproblem patients (Nelson). Thirteen separate trials have been performed to test the effectiveness of dialectical behavior, making it the most highly researched forms of psychotherapy for borderline personality disorder. It is also one of the most effective, as not only did participants of DBT report using three times more skills than those in a control condition, but also their use of skills mediated decreases in suicide attempts and depression, and an increase in control over anger (Nelson). Despite being viewed as having a poor prognosis initially, borderline personality disorder can be treated effectively. While it may be a lengthy ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 41. The Cask Of Amontillado By Edgar Alan Poe In Platizky s (1999) article on the Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Alan Poe is choppy and, sometimes, wandering critique. Albeit, the historical reference Platizky uses on how Poe ambiguously capitalizes on psychological fear and historical reality (p. 206), is the ultimate essence of the article which sets a novice reader on the right path to understanding the story. Platizky s use of historical facts and sources leads me to believe this article could help provoke a logical thought process for anyone to understand the fascination, and or fear, of being buried alive and the symbols used within the story. Platizky s article jumps from point to point with no clear direction. The order of Platizky transition s could be more concise; instead of jumping from Poe s earlier work, to tidbits of history, to the symbolism of points in the story, back to more historical references, and finally a weak conclusion that leaves readers wanting closure. This fact is not forthcoming of an adequate flow to follow. The flow is comparative to a Quentin Tarantino film jumping back and forth in the time line of the plot. Another aspect where Platizky s article lacks clear direction is through the explanation of the story s symbols and how they are historically tied. The statement of how the catacombs could be symbolic due to Christian history and their nitrous decay would serve readers best, not to elaborate on the catacombs. This man, sentenced to ceaselessly rolling a rock to the top of a mountain and then watching it roll back down, is the epitome of the absurd hero according to Camus. In retelling the Myth of Sisyphus, Camus is able to create an extremely powerful image which sums up the intellectual discussion which comes before it in the book. We are told that Sisyphus is the absurd hero as much through his passions as through his torture. In a shocking, unnerving manner he opens with the bold statement that: There is but one truly serious philosophical problem and that is suicide. (p. 3). He goes on to discover if suicide is a real answer to the human who is unhappy with life. Or if life is worth living now that god is dead? The discussion begins and continues not as a metaphysical cobweb but as a well reasoned statement based on a way of knowing which Camus holds is the only epistemology we have at our command. We know only two things: This heart within me I can feel, and I judge that it exists. This world I can touch, and I likewise judge that it exists. There ends all my knowledge, and the rest is construction. (p. 14) With these as the basic certainties of the human condition, Camus argues that there is no meaning to life. He disapproves of the many philosophers who have played on words and pretended to believe that refusing to grant a meaning to life necessarily leads to declaring that it is not worth living. (p.7) Life has no absolute meaning. In spite of the human s irrational nostalgia for unity, for absolutes, for a definite order and meaning to the not me of the universe, no such meaning exists in the silent, indifferent universe. Xunzian s vision of politics and war as a source for contemporary Confucian theory of civilian military relations. The early Confucian figure Xunzi (xunzi, during 310 c. 220 BCE) gives a sophisticated analysis of war, which he develops on the basis of a larger social and political vision that he works out in considerable detail. This larger vision of human society is thoroughly normative in the sense that Xunzi both argues for the value of his ideal conception of society, and relates these moral arguments for the Confucian Dao or Way. Xunzi s led him to argue about war in ways that look distinctive to Western ethicists, but still his preferred issues are revealing themselves as suggestive in relation to current debates in military ethics. Judaism does not regard violence and war to promote justice as always wrong.
