Is Meritocracy
Is Meritocracy Actually As Fair As It Sounds?
Those who deserve to, succeed, and those who succeed, deserve to. People have to earn everything
they have and, no matter where they start, as long as they work hard they can get anywhere they want
to go. An extreme form of the American Dream . But while it is most definitely all of these things
listed above, is a meritocracy actually as fair as it sounds? In order for a meritocracy to work,
everyone would have to start on a level playing field in terms of race, wealth, and neighborhood to
have the same opportunity to earn their success. But, to get to this point, wealth would have to be
redistributed and races would have to be seen as perfectly equal to each other, which seems difficult in
the current society of the world where stigmas and stereotypes surround certain races and topics.
According to a writer in The Atlantic Monthly, even just the myth of meritocracy, or the relative truth
of it, can have a negative effect on colored children. For example, Dasani is an 11 year old African
American girl living in a decrepit city run shelter for the homeless in New York (Elliot). It is
obviously no place for a child. Dasani, however, is quite smart and is described by her principal as the
kind of girl who could be anything even a Supreme Court justice if only she harnesses her gifts early
enough . But, it is hard for children growing up in the situations Dasani is in, to even find what those
gifts are given the

Nietzsche s Sacrifice
The reading from Zarathustra Prologue asks a question of what has become of Mankind? He expresses
how mankind has evolved from nothing to man, nonetheless much within a person is still nothing,
(Zarathustra 3) indicating little has changed of mankind. Compared to the modern man, much has
changed, most people strives best to evolve to attain desires. According to Nietzsche, Zarathustra
indicated that mankind has lost his sense of living, polluted, and even once blasphemed against God.
Furthermore, he believed that the great thing one could experience is to be dishonored, for when the
hour in which even your happiness becomes deplorable to you, similarly, your reason and virtue,
(Zarathustra 3) referring to our morality. Consequently,

Exploring the Main Concepts of Advertising
How many of you listened to the radio, watched television, or glanced at a magazine before school
this morning? Whether you realized it or not the minute you pressed the power button or flipped the
cover page you were exposed to some sort of advertisement. Defined as any paid form of
communication by an identified sponsor, advertising dominates a huge part of our daily lives. Living
in such a consumer driven economy means that we deal with subliminal and up front messages
pushing us to buy, buy, buy , countless times throughout our day. Most of these messages are sent by
identified sponsors including major corporations like Wal Mart, as well as smaller run businesses. No
matter the size, all modern day businesses employ workers to ... Show more content on

The success of these advertisements must be measured. Marketers often conduct surveys and
questionnaires to pull information about their products from the marketplace. Information gathered
like this for a specific purpose is known as primary research. Marketers can draw a lot of valuable
knowledge from primary research. Such as images and ideas consumers associate with certain brands,
a concept known as brand image. Primary research also evaluates levels consumer satisfaction.
Following a product purchase, the buyer experience either satisfaction with their decision or cognitive
dissonance, when one regrets their recent purchase. This regret often corresponds with the amount of
involvement and thought put into a purchase. As a consumer, you most likely think less about buying
a bag of Cheetos versus buying a new IPod. When it comes to Cheetos you know what you re getting,
not much variation involved. However, an iPod offers multiple opportunities for customization and
upgrades that the consumer must carefully consider relative to the price they are willing to pay. In this
sense, buying Cheetos requires far less consumer purchase involvement then the purchase of a new
iPod. All of these factors contribute to the overall satisfaction associated with a product. The results of
conducted primary research help marketers decipher elements of their advertising strategy that need
tweaking. Essentially, the advertising

Effects of Divorce on Children
Divorce: Effects on Children
Divorce has become an unquestionable remedy for the miserably married. Currently, the United States
has the highest divorce rate in the world. Every year in the US approximately one million children
experience divorce which, is about one in every three children (Amato 21). The effects of divorce can
be tremendously painful for both children and adults. Children of divorce are more likely to suffer
from behavioral, social, academic, and psychological problems than children raised in two parent
families. The actual separation of the family will be the initial crisis that a child must deal with but
many issues such as economic hardship, moving, and other major issues may follow. Sarah
McLanahan, a leading ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The long term effects of divorce tend to be more adverse than the short term effects.
There are several causes for the long term effects but, children are more likely to develop them if they
are exposed to all or some of the following scenarios; continuous parental fighting, the loss of contact
with a parent following the divorce, little or no discipline, and being forced to takes sides against one
parent or the other.
Many studies show that children of divorce experience a heightened level of marital conflict. Another
long term problem that may effect children of divorce are the loyalty and trust issues that often follow
them into their own relationships. Even as adults, men tend to have a hard time dealing with the
effects of divorce, they often tend to be less involved with their own children much like the non
custodial parent was with them. Many females from single parent families have tendencies to have
children out of wedlock and generally have a negative opinion of their personal relationships. Aside
from relationship issues, children of divorced parents often have significant differences in after high
school education and career choices than children of intact families (Spruijt
897).
Divorce does not have to induce long term problems. The quality and quantity of support that you give
to your child during a divorce will determine how well

Five Steps Of Satire
In today s society, it is very common for people to make fun of certain events or people online or
through media, known as satire. Satire can be defined as, the use of irony, sarcasm, ridicule, or the
like, in exposing, denouncing, or deriding vice ( satire ) to expose the faults of humanity, institution or
society. Satirists use literary techniques and elements of satire in order to communicate a message to
the reader. That message can be conveyed through the five steps of satire. First is to determine the
object of satire; this usually pokes fun at someone or something resulting in laughter. Next, determine
the underlying message the author is trying to get across. Then, figure out the type of irony which is
being used: situational, verbal,

Digital Ethics
Digital ethics is important because it teaches the right as well as the wrong things to do on a computer.
It teaches people how to behave using social media, in other words, it shows people how to be mature
on the internet. With technology increasing the more users take advantage of its efficiency. As well as
manipulating technology to their advantage (Radhika. 2012).
Online users have to respect the legal agenda and act within the internets bounds using ethical,
courteous, safe productivity. The problem now with students writing papers is to determine if the
information is credibility. The Internet offers an excess amount of information, and this kind of
knowledge is coming from countless sources; reliable and unreliable (Radhika. 2012). ... Show more

Internet ethical issues affect a variety of people and almost all of them today are affected in some kind
of a way. Digital ethics also teaches online users about cyber bullying which happens a lot now.
Children and adults have been victims of cyber bullying over the past years that had been lead to
horrible things (Thomas. 2011).
The digital ethics does also indicate how one persona is seen by the people looking you up online. It is
so simple to search yourself up online and have all this information about you right in front of you.
This means anyone with internet access can see your social media pages, and if that person has a
background in hacking they can figure out all personal information such as social security numbers,
credit cards, and addresses (Radhika. 2012).
Hackers get into your hard drives and sell all your personal information to the highest bidders. Ethical
hacking on the other hand is doing what regular hackers do, but the differences is that they can do it
legally with the back up of the FBI of CIA. A reason someone would do this kind of hacking is to do
either a personal background check or if you are in the FBI most wanted listen (Radhika.

How To Write A Reflection In Social Work
Description: As the days pass by and the closer it gets to April 21, I realize my days at the clinic is
almost to an end. Typically, once I walk into the office in the morning, I check the voicemail and
return phone calls, then follow up with my clients to see if everything is okay. Also, to see if they are
in need of other assistance. This time around, when I speak with my clients, others, whether it is
patients or staff members, I interact with at the clinic I inform them that I will be leaving soon. When I
spoke with my clients, they would ask me a lot of questions about what is going to happen to them and
if they need help with their current issues. I ensure my clients and others that there will be other

Reminding the client is in the middle and near the end of their service plan how many more
days/sessions are reminding. According to Frederic Reamer, Ph.D. (2006), there are numerous reasons
to why a social worker can terminate services. Whether it is due to the worker becomes impaired,
retire, leaving an employment setting, client coverage runs out, large unpaid balance, or who is
refusing treatment; for instance, not abiding by the rules, missing a session. The article also addresses
making the client feel like he/she is not being abandoned. Reamer stated, Social workers must handle
issues surrounding the termination of services very carefully to protect clients and minimize risk.
When a client assistances are canceled unethically might not receive the services they are in need of
and possibly become a threat to themselves and others. Reamer defines abandonment as a legal
concept that refers to instances when a professional is not available to a client when needed. Social
workers incur a legal and ethical responsibility to continue that service or properly refer a client to an
alternative service provider, once they see the client. Social workers are not bound to accept every

Octavian Nothing Traitor To The Nation Character Analysis
In the 18th century there was a rapid rise of slavery. Many Africans were captured by the Europeans
separating from their family and home village. Many slaves tried to escape from their masters in the
colonies because they wanted to go back to Africa. Some Africans accepted their fate and started a
new family in the colonies. In the novel Octavian Nothing Traitor to the Nation, Octavian knows
nothing about slavery because he was born in the colonies. He considers his master, mother, and the
other servants in the house as his family. In the film Roots (2016), Kunta Kinte was separated from his

A Visit At The Georgia Dome
Everyone expects their sixteenth birthday to be this grand wonderful event with friends, family, and
maybe some cake, but what most don t expect is to make their eighteenth just as important. Yes,
turning eighteen is just as significant as turning sixteen because it symbolizes your transformation
from a teenager to an adult, but that is why we celebrate turning sixteen as heavily as we do. My
eighteenth birthday truly was a grand event, one where even in my wildest imaginations I never
pictured doing the things I did, it felt like something out of a Hollywood movie script. The celebration
started with a concert at the Georgia Dome, on October 1st, leading all the way to its grand finale, a
trip to New York City, on October 10th. It was two solid weeks of surprise after surprise with each
surprise being bigger and better than the last, or at least in my opinion anyway. October 1st was seeing
One Direction, my favorite band, live, the 2nd was surprise tickets to Cirque Du Soleil, the 3rd was a
surprise party with friends and family, the 10th through the 12th was a trip to New York City, and
lastly and later on in the day of the 12th was seeing Disney s Frozen on ice. I don t think I have ever
been happier than when attending all five of these events. Seven o clock pm, Wednesday October 1st,
2014, was the exact time my skipped a beat; it was the exact time the concert of my dreams started.

Technology and the American Dream
Technology and The American Dream
The idea that no matter where you start in life you have opportunity to work hard and gain prosperity
and success, is also known as the American Dream. Which nowadays seems to be an almost dying if
not already totally dead concept. Something seen only in fairy tales and movies and not really so much
in real life. In these days and times it seems as though it does not matter how hard you work, but
rather the people you know, that decide whether you will have the opportunity to be successful or not.
But if you are just an everyday person how exactly are you supposed to go about making those
connections with people that really matter? The ones that can really help you? It almost seems like if

His dream finally began to come together in 2009 when his videos captured the interest of a manager
who then contacted him and helped him in the process of meeting the right people. He met with Usher
who took him to meet L.A. Reid and then got him signed to Island Def Jam Recordings. He then
released his first album, and went platinum just two months later. Using technology Justin was able to
broadcast his talent to the world, get discovered, and to create a fanbase. These things were eventually
the foundations for his fame. To this day his original fans continue to be his biggest supporters and
they help to keep him successful. Not only was he blessed in his rise to fame, but the speed in which
he achieved it all is remarkable as well.
Without the Internet and technology his probability of ever getting the chance to meet any of those big

Perhaps an even greater example of technology s influence on the music industry is told with the story

The Case Of Sino Forest And Ernst And Young
The Effects of Fraud:
The Case of Sino Forest and Ernst Young
In today s global economy, investors must rely on information provided by the various companies
listed on the stock exchanges in order to determine if a company is a good investment, or a poor one.
In order to make informed decisions, investors want to see financial statements that have been proven
to be correct; they do not want to risk losing the amounts they have invested if they were to choose to
invest in a company that was not being truthful about their financial standings. To reduce this risk,
publicly traded companies must have and audit of their annual financial statements. These audits are

listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange).
Though the situation of fraud appears to be black and white, what is there to be said about the auditors
who do not detect the fraud committed by their clients? Where they incompetent in their audit of the
financial statements, or were they somehow involved in the fraudulent activities? A case that
demonstrates the consequences to auditors when fraud is found to have been perpetrated by a client is
that of Ernst Young and the lumber company, Sino Forest. Sino Forest is a Canadian Chinese timber
company that was listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange; before the fraud allegations, it was the most
valuable forestry company on the TSX. (The Canadian Press, CBC, 2012) However, it was accused of
fraudulently overstating its timber assets, supposedly located in China. Through its investigation, the
Ontario Securities Commission found that
Sino held undisclosed control over the network of third parties through which it conducted purchase
and sale transactions. In turn, these deals were backed by fraudulent contracts that were not drafted
until the quarter after they allegedly took place and revenue from them was recognized. (Koven, 2012)
In other words, Sino Forest did not inform the auditors, or the public, that they had control over their
third party suppliers and customers.

Previously, Achilles had remained out of the war due to complications with Agamemnon, but that all

Achilles found out about his friend s death from Antilochus. He realized that he could only console

Jacques And The Social Contract Theory
Jacques is arguably one of the most influential philosopher and thinkers not only during the
Enlightenment era in France and across Europe but also through the development of modern political
and educational work where many have been inspired by his writings. His ideas result from his belief
that every state has its origin in people who gave birth to its political structure, fundamental laws and
civil liberties. (Rousseau lecture1) Moreover Rousseau paid great attention to nature and human
feelings. He claimed that humans are naturally independent and held a belief that man is born free and
everywhere he is in chains (Rousseau, 2012, pg. 12 ) arguing that people in the state of nature were
fundamentally good and pure but became corrupt and evil through the institution of civilised society
(lecture). On the contrary, Rousseau remains to be a huge supporter of the social contract theory,
which is considered by him as the source of states legitimacy, criticises social inequality,
authoritarianism and feudalism. As an important social contract theorist, he also elaborates that people
are the creators of law as well as the subject of law and because they will provide themselves with the
laws they wish to live by, the people s sovereignty is assured by the societies contract that is created
(Bertram, 2010). In his writings The Social Contract or Principles of Political Right, Rousseau
amplifies on the concept of the general will. In this essay I will explain and asses

Videogames First Entered The Market Place
Videogames first entered the market place in 1972 with the release of the Magnavox Odyssey, but did
not become widely popular until the 1980s with the release of the Nintendo Entertainment System
(NES). Between then and now, videogames have not only advanced the technology within the games
themselves, but also changed how we think and act. Primitive in comparison to today s consoles, the
NES was revolutionary at the time, both for its hardware advances and its critical timing of release:
directly after the Great Videogame Crash of 1983 . In the early 1980s, videogames popularity grew at
a staggering rate as people saw the rising potential of the medium to fulfill their needs (more on that
later). However, many businesses also saw the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
All three of these ideas work in tandem in games and people are attracted to games that contain more
of the feeling that they most desire in them. Take for example the popularity of dating Sims in Japan.
Recently, Japan became a victim of an upheaval in the [maintained] gender roles. Men were getting
tired of 60 hour work weeks to support marriages they were barely involved in. (The Game Theorists)
Soon Japanese men stopped marrying all together. To compensate, the men turned to dating sim that
would simulate relationships without the constant maintenance that is needed to maintain a real
relationship. Then they could focus more on their job. This is an example of relatedness and of how
culture is affected by videogames and vice versa. Education Videogames have often been scrutinized
by the general public as inducing violence in adolescents who play violent videogames. However,
according to British researchers, Those children who spend more time playing games might be slightly
likelier to be hyperactive and to get into fights. But violent video games seem to have no effect on
behavior . (Dotinga) The reason that this has been disputed for so long is because there is no way to
conclusively prove whether or not videogames do induce violence; there are too many variables such

Internet Violence And Cyber Bullying
With the fast growing advancements in technology, people in all age groups, whether young or old, are
hooked on with these emerging technologies. The use of internet is prevalent showing its global
consumption. Social media have been available even to the young population. They are effective
means of communication, socialization, and in collecting and sharing information. However, internet
is becoming unsafe and hostile. They do not just serve its real purpose; instead they become effective
means for bullies to perform offences or harmful activities anonymously (Davison Stein, 2014).
Internet related abuses and cyber bullying has long been a concern of schools and universities, the
government and the whole community. Efforts have been put forward to combat cyber bullying that
includes prevention programs at the community, school, and family levels. Nowadays, it is not strange
to hear or encounter incidences of internet abuses and cyber bullying. Spending too much time,
inappropriate use of the internet and with the introduction of social networks, people became more
vulnerable to any of those internet related abuses and cyber bullying (Australia Counselling, 2013).
Anti bullying programs and services that combat cyber bullying and internet abuses are primarily
designed to control and discourage bullying that may take place both online and offline. Anti bullying
programs are also intended to raise awareness of bullying among children, parents and teachers, to

Star At The Sun Overcoming The Terror Of Death Summary
Staring at the Sun: Overcoming the Terror of Death by Irvin D. Yalcom is a raw and unfiltered look at
one of the most difficult challenges everyone faces, death. He takes you through the real life
experiences of his patients, past and present, and shares his thoughts about death. The real life
examples have a way of grasping your attention and pulling you in. He assists his patients in
recognizing the reality of death, but not fearing it. Yalcom suggests that people have varying degrees
of death anxiety. For some, death is not even a thought, while for others it may consume their
thoughts. He also suggests that our everyday anxieties may ultimately originate from our fear of death.
He includes observations of approaches used by famous philosophers. While reading, you cannot help
but to contemplate your own life and envision your death. Mommy, when will I die? I can still hear
my 4 year old s little voice asking me this question from the backseat as I am driving. How do I
answer her? Do I tell her the truth? Do I lie to her? How do I explain death to a 4 year old? For her,
this question was out of curiosity not fear. For me, this was the most gut wrenching question I had
ever been asked. Holding back tears, I gave her the best answer that I knew at the time. Everyone dies

Shooting And Elephant By George Orwell
The Cost of Dignity
Although George Orwell is more commonly known for his works such as 1984 or Animal Farm,
another one of his great short stories is Shooting and Elephant. The story discusses a time in which
George is faced with a difficult decision dealing with what the people near him wanted and what he
knew was morally right. This moral dilemma obviously played a large role in the type of person
Orwell became. The story not only lines up with his ideals about government and imperialism, he is
still visited by the events that happened to him in Burmese. Orwell served as an imperial guard, and
this frustrated him to no end. Being part of a system that he hated was difficult for him to stomach. At
the time, India was controlled by Britain ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Being born in the Machine that is imperialism, showed Orwell the flaws of the politically oppressing a
group of people. He was born to Eric Arthur Blair, but was quickly taken to England and never had
much contact with his father until he retired and returned to England. He was sent to boarding school
and there he began to realize the difference between having money and not. After leaving the boarding
school, the next stop for orwell was college in which he got a scholarship to both Eaton and
Wellington college. This was a huge success for him but landed him in a proverbial writers block. He
wanted to continue his studies but his family was not able to financially help him. So instead he
decided to follow in his father s footsteps and joined the imperial guard. These five years were said to
be awful for George, but it is where he got the inspiration to write this short story. Orwell had a
difficult time after his stint in the guard as well. Coming out, he landed a job as a dishwasher and
struggled to keep himself afloat as he tried to get many stories published. He and his wife then moved
to Spain and joined the civil war that was brewing in the country at the time. He was nearly fatally
wounded from a gunshot he received while he was in the militia, but he survived. Unfortunately, he
was now labeled as a traitor and had to flee the country. When returning to England the couple
adopted a son and George contracted tuberculosis. He had to fight it throughout the rest of his life
leaving him sickly all the time. At this point in Orwell s life, he began to settle down. He became a
critic and took on a few writing assignments until he landed a job as a BBC producer. During this time
WWII was happening just a few countries away and he found himself more of a propagandist rather
than a producer. This is when his

Dinosaur Extinction Research Paper
Dinosaur Extinction Sixty Five Million years ago, a giant space rock believed to be some six miles
across hit Earth near the town of Chicxulub, Mexico, blasting a crater more than 110 miles wide. The
impact is believed to have released as much energy as 100 trillion tons of TNT, more than 1 billion
times the power of the atom bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II. The
giant mosasaurs and plesiosaurs in the seas and the pterosaurs in the skies. Plankton, the base of the
ocean food chain, took a hard hit. Many families of brachiopods and sea sponges disappeared. The
remaining hard shelled ammonites vanished. Shark diversity shriveled. Most vegetation withered. In

Innovation and Design Strategy
Samsung Electronics: Innovation and Design Strategy Introduction: The case study commences with
the integration of innovative design and brand management by Samsung Electronics which started a
new trend in the electronics industry. As discussed in the case, initially Samsung was not much
popular and lacked design identity but later it relocated itself by: * Improvement in the product
development processes * Increasing their investments in R amp;D and product design i.e. R amp;D
globalization. * By adopting right innovation strategies. * By mastering the less tangible, more
intuitive qualities of superior design. * By diversification of products and step by step or continual
improvement. * Implementing Global ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
* Co operation between the business partners throughout the supply chain * Firms ability in exploring
end penetrating into the new markets * Speed of innovation and product development. Along with this
Samsung also increased the investments in their R amp;D centers. After doing the trend analysis for
the Exhibit 3 which shows the Samsung R amp;D budget and percentage sales, We arrive at the
conclusion that the Samsung s R amp;D budget increased till the year 2007 linearly. But there is
decline in the percentage of sales in the year 2007, which suggests that the Samsung will need to
rethink this strategy. There is an urgent need to optimize the cost related to Samsung s R amp;D
expenditure to prevent the decline of sales in future. Samsung globalized their R amp;D network
worldwide to develop technologies which can be commercialized in the future. Basically the main
idea behind the globalization of R amp;D network is to: * Focus on innovation and generating new
products for global market. * There is a huge scope of product improvement. * This provides an
access to the emerging markets. * Leverages the market opportunity for the firm. User Centric Design
Philosophy Samsung s philosophy was to strike the balance between the reasons and feelings. This
was done by them with the rationalization of the design of product by using geometric and
technological parameters and enhancing the

Risk Management Plan For An Information System Upgrade
The purpose of this document is to describe a risk management plan for an information system
upgrade. This document outlines the processes that will be used in the identification, recording,
discussion, and response to risks as well as the roles of the project team. Inadequate attention to risk
brings about cost overruns, inadequate technical performance and schedule delays. The project risk
plan will record the team s decisions on risk management to establish a clear standard way for the
actions to be taken. Moreover, the plan will be utilized throughout the project life. Risks are the
potential events that may occur in the course of a project, and if they occur would adversely affect the
project scope, schedule, quality and/or resources. Further, when risks occur they bring with them
consequences. Conversely, risk management is the process with which risk management planning,
identification, analysis, response and control is done on a project to mitigate its effects. The goal and
objective of risk management is to reduce the chances and effects of adverse events to the project
objectives. The project manager will be responsible in the creation and maintenance of this project risk
management plan throughout the project to maintain the appropriate levels of risk to meet the project s
objectives. And as such the project team members who may have questions regarding the document
may consult the risk management officer. The project director will be tasked with reviewing and

Examples Of Revenge In The Count Of Monte Cristo
Michelle Nguyen
Mrs. Cooper
CP English Honors 2A
14 September 2015
Revenge Has Penalties Samuel Johnson once said, Revenge is an act of passion; vengeance of justice.
Injuries are revenged; crimes are avenged. He points out that without passion one will not have one s
revenge. Passion is an essential tool to help fuel one s continuous search for revenge to gain justice. If
someone inflicts harm upon another, they should expect retribution coming their way. This is what
occurs in the adventurous, fictional novel The Count of Monte Cristo written by Alexandre Dumas.
Dantès is forced to spend his youthful years in the Château d lf, a state prison, because of Danglars ,
Fernand s, and Villefort s selflessness. Once he escapes he plans to seek ... Show more content on

Although Dantès vengeance is a success, he loses his identity and even harms other people he did not
intend to hurt. Fernand loses his honor which leads him to commit suicide, Danglars goes bankrupt,
and Villefort becomes mad. To accomplish his vengeance he goes by many aliases, but his primary
one being the Count of Monte Cristo. He is introduced to Franz and Albert by Signor Pastrini, I
suppose you know that the Count of Monte Cristo lives on the same floor as you (Dumas 134). This is
when the audience is first introduced to Monte Cristo. He predominantly keeps the title the Count of
Monte Cristo throughout the book, but at the very end he signs a letter, Your friend, Edmond Dantès,
acknowledging that he still has a bit of his old self in him (Dumas

Compassion Fatigue As A Synonym For Secondary Traumatic...
Introduction According to Coetzee and Hester (2010) compassion fatigue was adopted as a synonym
for secondary traumatic stress disorder. The aim of their 2010 concept analysis of the topic was to
further define compassion fatigue as it applies to the nursing practice. They describe the process of
compassion fatigue from just simply discomfort to compassion stress and finally fatigue. (p.1) Their
analysis describes how damaging compassion fatigue can be on a nurse s ability to provide
compassionate care. The information is vital to the field of nursing and the outcomes of our patients.
Specifically, it plays an important role in my personal practice. It s a nurse responsibility to provide
compassion care for the ill. In the process nurses are exposed daily to their patient s pain trauma, and
their struggles. This and other factors such as unsafe work conditions can take a toll on nurses and
their functionality. As a mental health nurse one of the biggest priority is to provide compassion.
Working with such a vulnerable population with such significant needs requires strong willed nurses
who can come to work everyday with the sole purpose to provide good care and compassion. This
specialty is very challenging as there are many barriers preventing patients and clients from getting the
care they need which can be stressful on their caregivers, especially nurses. This can cause what

Government Regulation of Tobacco Products Government regulation of tobacco has come under some

It causes cancers of the lung, esophagus, larynx, mouth, throat, kidney, bladder, pancreas, stomach,

thousands of dollars are spent every year on the treatment of cancer due to smoking. The biggest
incentive is that people would live longer more productive cancer free lives. Children could be
children and not smoking at a young age and harming their bodies with cigarettes. With government
control over the tobacco industry the United States could see a dramatic decline in cancer and deaths
due to cigarette smoking. Health advocates predicted that the new FDA standards could eventually
reduce some of the 60 cancer causing carcinogens and 4,000 harmful toxins in cigarette smoke or
make cigarettes taste so bad they deterred users (Lawrence amp; Weber, 2011, p. 192). By allowing
the FDA to regulate the chemicals in cigarettes and outlaw a majority of flavorings it would help in
reducing the number of children that would be enticed to try cigarettes. This in turn would save money
on health care and many people would live longer more productive cancer free lives.

The Lost Boys Of Sudan Film Analysis
The second Sudanese Civil War in Sudan forced millions of innocent people to flee their homes and
families in search for safety. Doing so, many got displaced or killed because of starvation, genocidal
murder and bomb raids. Those who survived were sent to a refugee camp in Kenya and some the lost
boys a name given by aid workers at the camp, had the fortune to be sent by the United States to
America to start a new life. Among these were Panther Bior, John Bul Dau, and Daniel Abol Pach,
whose life was documented in God Grew Tired of Us. Furthermore, the documentary explores the
lives of the Lost Boys of Sudan and their journey as they learn to adapt to the American Life, a life
much better and advanced than the oppressed life they lived. The directors, Christopher Dillon Quinn
and Tommy Walker, aim to show how the boys cope with learning new customs, rules, trying to keep a
job, amongst other things, all while doing the best they can to stay rooted in their culture and help
those they left behind in the refugee camp. With actual footage and relatable characters, the film sets a
tone that evokes sympathy to viewers, thus relaying a need of action and validating his message of
Americans forgetfulness and ignorance to their blessings.
The beginning of the film showing real footage from the Civil War in Sudan, the starvation and the
condition the young men were in, serves as a way to build the setting, characters and context. Along
with those archives, the directors back up

Frantz Fanon
Frantz Fanon was a deeply involved and diligent philosopher who recognized the separation and
relations between the oppressed and the oppressors as well as the fight for freedom. He specifically
speaks on Algeria as the colonized, facing the French who were the colonizers. Fanon was writing
mainly during the 1940 s 60 when decolonization was becoming popular. Fanon was greatly involved
in the decolonization struggle, and in his book The Wretched of the Earth, Fanon explains and
observes the ways in which the colonized shall attempt to declare their rights from the colonizers.
Fanon believed that the only way for the colonized to earn their independence, they would have to

Before they begin celebrating, the Capitol diminishes the rule that was previously in place, which
allowed for two winners from the same district, and returned to the original rule in which only one
tribute shall be crowned victor. Neither Katniss nor Peeta gave in to the controlling and evil plans of
the Capitol, which called for either of them to turn on the other, and Katniss unselfishly suggested that
they both eat the poisonous Nightlock berries, leaving no victor. Here they both demonstrate great
courage and passion, as they are about to eat the berries when the Capitol gives in and allows them
both to be victorious. Katniss and Peeta defy that violence is necessary to gain their independence as
Fanon suggests. Rather than violently fighting until one of them remains, they understand that if this
were to happen the Capitol would have been pleased; however, instead Peeta and Katniss use peace
and intellect to first act on what would strongly annoy the Capitol, having no winner, forcing the
Capitol to have the final decision, two winners or no winners. Living under the totalitarian rule of the
Capitol, participating in these games in which, the most important key to survival is to kill, Katniss
and Peeta definitively defied Fanon and provided a strong, symbolic message to all of the districts and
the Capitol that change was headed its way. Frantz Fanon and Mohandas

The World s Preeminent Sporting Competition
When you think of the Olympics, you most likely think of gymnastics, soccer, swimming, hockey and
many more events. However, very few of the sports that are competed in now existed when the
Olympics first began. They have evolved considerably over the last 3,000 years. First of all, there
were very few events compared to how many there are now. Also, the Olympics went from only being
known in Greece to being the world s preeminent sporting competition. (History.com)
The Olympics can be traced back as far as 776 BC. The games were devoted to the Olympian gods
and took place in Olympia, which according to Greek myths is on the island of Pelops . The first ever

and for the first time the Games featured a closing ceremony (History). Since then, the Olympics have
been held all over the world including; London, Mexico, Munich, Beijing, Los Angeles and
Vancouver. The Olympics continued to be held every four years until 1994 when the Summer and
Winter Games began to alternate every two years.
In 2004, the Olympics returned to where the modern games began, Athens. These Olympics had a
record number of countries compete in the games. The shotput event that year was held at the original
site of the ancient games in Olympia.
In the ancient Olympic Games, there were only six different events to compete in. The original events
were boxing, pankration, wrestling, running, equestrian and the pentathlon (Top End Sports). The first
event ever held was the stade which is a 192 meter foot race. A cook named Coroebus won it
becoming the first Olympic champion.
According to perseus.tufts.com, boxing in the old Olympics was very different then compared to now.
Perseus.tufts.com says that, Boxers fought without rounds until one man was knocked out, or admitted
he had been beaten. Unlike the modern sport, there was no rule against hitting an opponent when he
was down (Perseus). They didn t have weight classes so you could

Green Marketing Essay example
In today s day and age, everyone is concerned about the environment. Our society is increasingly
encouraged to go green, to do our part in making the world a cleaner, more eco friendly place. Green
marketing is one major strategy being used to promote such efforts, but is it effective? There is some
debate about this concept, including the history of green marketing, the problems with green
marketing so far, the effectiveness of marketing schemes like Sunchips and Toyota, and the strategies
that could be used to increase the ability of green marketing. While protecting our planet is a noble
concept, its execution seems to be a little vague. Of all the aspects concerning green marketing, one
thing is clear: our planet still has a long ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sunchips provides not only a healthier chip but also uses renewable energy and a biodegradable bag
and encourages consumers to join their eco movement. Other companies, such as Pepsi and
Volkswagen, are joining in too. The Refresh Everything project launched by the major soda chain is
attempting to make its product more environmentally friendly, and Volkswagen is taking even bigger
strides with its movement, The Fun Theory, which encourages customers to be green while making the
process fun (Park 1). Other major corporations jumping on the green bandwagon include Hewlett
Packard, which boasts its recycling efforts and energy efficiency, and Ben and Jerry s with its effort to
Lick Global Warming and employ other eco conscious practices (Rottkamp 1). While these strategies
have shed light on being friendly to our planet, the fact remains that the large portion of our
population simply is not embracing it. One major problem as far as companies using green marketing
and why it isn t working is that the relatively vague definition of green marketing leaves a lot of room
for loopholes. Green marketing, by simply being defined as the marketing of products that are
assumed to be environmentally safe, allows companies to take advantage of this idea even if their
products are not the best example of green ones (McClendon 1). Most companies also don t practice
what they preach in such

  • 2. Is Meritocracy Is Meritocracy Actually As Fair As It Sounds? Those who deserve to, succeed, and those who succeed, deserve to. People have to earn everything they have and, no matter where they start, as long as they work hard they can get anywhere they want to go. An extreme form of the American Dream . But while it is most definitely all of these things listed above, is a meritocracy actually as fair as it sounds? In order for a meritocracy to work, everyone would have to start on a level playing field in terms of race, wealth, and neighborhood to have the same opportunity to earn their success. But, to get to this point, wealth would have to be redistributed and races would have to be seen as perfectly equal to each other, which seems difficult in the current society of the world where stigmas and stereotypes surround certain races and topics. According to a writer in The Atlantic Monthly, even just the myth of meritocracy, or the relative truth of it, can have a negative effect on colored children. For example, Dasani is an 11 year old African American girl living in a decrepit city run shelter for the homeless in New York (Elliot). It is obviously no place for a child. Dasani, however, is quite smart and is described by her principal as the kind of girl who could be anything even a Supreme Court justice if only she harnesses her gifts early enough . Whether you realized it or not the minute you pressed the power button or flipped the cover page you were exposed to some sort of advertisement. Defined as any paid form of communication by an identified sponsor, advertising dominates a huge part of our daily lives. Living in such a consumer driven economy means that we deal with subliminal and up front messages pushing us to buy, buy, buy , countless times throughout our day. Marketers often conduct surveys and questionnaires to pull information about their products from the marketplace. Information gathered like this for a specific purpose is known as primary research. Marketers can draw a lot of valuable knowledge from primary research. Such as images and ideas consumers associate with certain brands, a concept known as brand image. Primary research also evaluates levels consumer satisfaction. Following a product purchase, the buyer experience either satisfaction with their decision or cognitive dissonance, when one regrets their recent purchase. This regret often corresponds with the amount of involvement and thought put into a purchase. As a consumer, you most likely think less about buying a bag of Cheetos versus buying a new IPod. When it comes to Cheetos you know what you re getting, not much variation involved. However, an iPod offers multiple opportunities for customization and upgrades that the consumer must carefully consider relative to the price they are willing to pay. In this sense, buying Cheetos requires far less consumer purchase involvement then the purchase of a new iPod. All of these factors contribute to the overall satisfaction associated with a product. The results of conducted primary research help marketers decipher elements of their advertising strategy that need tweaking. Essentially, the advertising ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 16. Jacques And The Social Contract Theory Jacques is arguably one of the most influential philosopher and thinkers not only during the Enlightenment era in France and across Europe but also through the development of modern political and educational work where many have been inspired by his writings. His ideas result from his belief that every state has its origin in people who gave birth to its political structure, fundamental laws and civil liberties. (Rousseau lecture1) Moreover Rousseau paid great attention to nature and human feelings. He claimed that humans are naturally independent and held a belief that man is born free and everywhere he is in chains (Rousseau, 2012, pg. 12 ) arguing that people in the state of nature were fundamentally good and pure but became corrupt and evil through the institution of civilised society (lecture). On the contrary, Rousseau remains to be a huge supporter of the social contract theory, which is considered by him as the source of states legitimacy, criticises social inequality, authoritarianism and feudalism. As an important social contract theorist, he also elaborates that people are the creators of law as well as the subject of law and because they will provide themselves with the laws they wish to live by, the people s sovereignty is assured by the societies contract that is created (Bertram, 2010). In his writings The Social Contract or Principles of Political Right, Rousseau amplifies on the concept of the general will. In this essay I will explain and asses ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He takes you through the real life experiences of his patients, past and present, and shares his thoughts about death. The real life examples have a way of grasping your attention and pulling you in. He assists his patients in recognizing the reality of death, but not fearing it. Yalcom suggests that people have varying degrees of death anxiety. For some, death is not even a thought, while for others it may consume their thoughts. He also suggests that our everyday anxieties may ultimately originate from our fear of death. He includes observations of approaches used by famous philosophers. While reading, you cannot help but to contemplate your own life and envision your death. Mommy, when will I die? Neither Katniss nor Peeta gave in to the controlling and evil plans of the Capitol, which called for either of them to turn on the other, and Katniss unselfishly suggested that they both eat the poisonous Nightlock berries, leaving no victor. Here they both demonstrate great courage and passion, as they are about to eat the berries when the Capitol gives in and allows them both to be victorious. Katniss and Peeta defy that violence is necessary to gain their independence as Fanon suggests. Rather than violently fighting until one of them remains, they understand that if this were to happen the Capitol would have been pleased; however, instead Peeta and Katniss use peace and intellect to first act on what would strongly annoy the Capitol, having no winner, forcing the Capitol to have the final decision, two winners or no winners. Living under the totalitarian rule of the Capitol, participating in these games in which, the most important key to survival is to kill, Katniss and Peeta definitively defied Fanon and provided a strong, symbolic message to all of the districts and the Capitol that change was headed its way. Green marketing is one major strategy being used to promote such efforts, but is it effective? There is some debate about this concept, including the history of green marketing, the problems with green marketing so far, the effectiveness of marketing schemes like Sunchips and Toyota, and the strategies that could be used to increase the ability of green marketing.
