This document provides an overview of the protist phylum, which includes the most primitive eukaryotic organisms. It describes four main classes of protists: Rhizopoda, which use pseudopodia for locomotion and have a single nucleus like Amoeba; Flagellata, which use ribbon-like flagella and may contain photosynthetic pigments like Euglena; Sporozoa, which are endoparasitic and lack locomotory structures like Plasmodium; and Ciliophora, which use multiple hair-like cilia for movement and have both a large meganucleus and small micronucleus.

These are aquatic, microscopic, unicellular organisms.

2. Class- Rhizopoda/ Sarcodina
 Pseudopodia locomotory organelle
 Nucleus is single
 Example - Amoeba

3. Amoeba
 Amoeba is fresh water form found in ponds
and lakes.
 They are asymmetric in shape.
 Amoeba has pseudopodia for locomotion and
feeding.
 Body consists of a single biconvex nucleus,
ectoplasm, endoplasm, contractile vacuole
and food vacuole.

4. Class- Flagellata/ Mastigophora
 Locomotory organelles ribbon like flagella
 Nucleus is single and spherical
 cytoplasm contains photosynthetic pigments
 Example – Euglena

5. Class- Sporozoa
 Locomotory organelles are absent
 They are endoparasitic
 Example of Class – Sporozoa is Plasmodium

6. Class- Ciliophora
 Locomotory organelles are several hair-like
cilia
 Large meganucleus and a small micronucleus
