Photonic Evolution
DWDM Coherent detection + DSP started a revolution in the DWDM
industry:
Eliminated the sensivity to the most significant impairment for high speed transmission over
fiber. Chromatic Dispersion.
Eliminated the sensivity to PMD. Old fibers life extended.
Performance for 40 and 100G channels similar to 10G.
Even gains in performance can be achieved when eliminating DCF. Latency improvements.
The carrier fits into the ITU-T 50GHz grid.
Absolute Mbit/s cost reduction.

DWDM: Next Steps on the Network - Novelties
Coherent Detection + DSP on receiver side already rolling out.
Coming up DSP on the transmitter side allowing:
Over 100G Nyquist DWDM channels. Improved efficiency in
bandwidth;
Dynamic flexible modulation. Dynamic adaptation of the

ROADM with flexible channel spacing.
DWDM strategy for evolving
Deploy brand new line systems
for the coherent channels
(100G). Maximize the benefits
brought by the coherent
technology eliminating the CD
compensators and the dual stage

DWDM strategy for evolving – time frame
Despite the very valuable industry working on developing the over 100G channels, it
seems 100G is going to have a longer and healthy life supporting the heavy traffic over
the networks.
Challenges for the super-channels and the flexible dynamic rate adaptation:
The reaching range for higher bandwidth. Wider networks may not get the
advantages of higher modulation formats due to the longer distances.

16QAM < 600km reaching.
The coordination with the clients platform when reducing or increasing the
bandwidth of a channel. Policing for dropping traffic.

OTN switching is still the best option combined to the ROADM to provide flexibility and
reliability in the network. Fast protection given by the electrical layer and CAPEX

The OTN advantages are clear for wider area networks with longer links.
Router solution makes sense for about 20% of the service providers.

SDN – Soft Defined Network
Despite the many challenges to be faced by SDN, it comes with a
good rational and appeal for cost reduction on both OPEX and
CAPEX.
The network elements trend to be much simpler and focused on
lower OSI layers: Lower CAPEX.
The software APIs come to simplify the job for service delivering,
Transport Network Keep On Evaluating
The software APIs come to simplify the job for service delivering,
speeding it up and automatizing steps: Lower OPEX.
GMPLS can be a useful tool for the SDN approach in certain
phases/scenarios. Anyway the GMPLS health is getting weak.
GMPLS is still a requirement for the transport network platforms.
SDN approach is becoming also a requirement, at least as a roadmap.

Access/Aggregation Efficiency – Discussions
SDN + NFV as trends rising up in the market empower the approach of
simpler and lower layer technology for the access and aggregation
layers of the network.
The MPLS-TP based devices with static routing are leveraged as one of
the best options to support the transport in SDN and/or NFV approach.

Conclusions
OTN Switching has been consolidated as the technology option for the
backbone layer for best efficiency combined to the DWDM ROADM.
Control plane integration to the ROADM is becoming a mandatory
requirement.
SDN is raising up in the market as the unified and centralized multilayer
control plane option. Within the SDN time for evolving and consolidation
GMPLS continues as a mandatory requirement.
Transport Network Keep On Evaluating
GMPLS continues as a mandatory requirement.
The approach of simplified equipment/protocols deployed along the
transport network has been empowered by the SDN and/or NFV. The
more complex functions trend to be centralized and even virtualized.
Is time to start the proof of concept of SDN and NFV in order to start
shaping the network for the future. Will they be the new disruption in the
Operator/Service Provider networks??

  • 8. DWDM: Next Steps on the Network - Novelties Coherent Detection + DSP on receiver side already rolling out. Coming up DSP on the transmitter side allowing: Over 100G Nyquist DWDM channels. Improved efficiency in bandwidth; Dynamic flexible modulation. Dynamic adaptation of the channels capacity based on optical impairments and available spectrum; Transport Network Keep On Evaluating spectrum; Optical effects pre compensation. ROADM with flexible channel spacing.
  • 9. DWDM strategy for evolving Deploy brand new line systems for the coherent channels (100G). • 11. DWDM strategy for evolving – time frame Despite the very valuable industry working on developing the over 100G channels, it seems 100G is going to have a longer and healthy life supporting the heavy traffic over the networks. Challenges for the super-channels and the flexible dynamic rate adaptation: The reaching range for higher bandwidth. Wider networks may not get the advantages of higher modulation formats due to the longer distances. 16QAM < 600km reaching. Transport Network Keep On Evaluating 16QAM < 600km reaching. The coordination with the clients platform when reducing or increasing the bandwidth of a channel. Policing for dropping traffic. Control Plane integration (G-MPLS? SDN?)

OTN switch/interfaces are cut off replaced by some few less on the routers 1 x 2 The relation between the amount of interfaces must be very well evaluated. The cost of them on each platform is quite different. The transport control plane comes up to the routers 1 x 0 GMPLS runs trhough the routers and ROADM. Not many options of ROADM/Routers integrated. Multivendor environment issue. The sub lambda switching has also to be brought to the routers. They need to enlarge some more 1 x 2 Depending on the bandwidth usage per lambda. Keep in mind the cost difference between the options. 5 x 5

  • 16. Backbone Efficiency – Discussions Legacy interfaces/services. How to address them? Routers don’t address efficiently SDH TDM interfaces. To keep the SDH based transport network in parallel become too costly. Transport Network Keep On Evaluating OTN x Router 5++ x 5 parallel become too costly. Fact The legacy is always a big issue for the operators/service providers. Provide a seamless optimized in cost solution to address the future and the present has a enormous value.
  • 17. Backbone Efficiency – Discussions More than 80% of the service providers intend to deploy OTN Switching network until 2016. Mostly on the core. Transport Network Keep On Evaluating OTN x Router 5++ x 5 OTN Switch + ROADM ASON + WASON Unified Control Plane allows max efficiency Router + ROADM GMPLS + WASON Integrated Control Plane is mandatory (???) 2016. Mostly on the core. The OTN Switching integrated to DWDM/ROADM system is a major requirement up to 2016. Operators/Service Providers The OTN advantages are clear for wider area networks with longer links. Router solution makes sense for about 20% of the service providers. Everyone should make his own evaluation based on his environment/scenarios.

  • 22. Unified Control Plane – New Trends SDN – Soft Defined Network Despite the many challenges to be faced by SDN, it comes with a good rational and appeal for cost reduction on both OPEX and CAPEX. The network elements trend to be much simpler and focused on lower OSI layers: Lower CAPEX. The software APIs come to simplify the job for service delivering, Transport Network Keep On Evaluating The software APIs come to simplify the job for service delivering, speeding it up and automatizing steps: Lower OPEX. GMPLS can be a useful tool for the SDN approach in certain phases/scenarios. Anyway the GMPLS health is getting weak. GMPLS is still a requirement for the transport network platforms. SDN approach is becoming also a requirement, at least as a roadmap.

  • 27. Conclusions OTN Switching has been consolidated as the technology option for the backbone layer for best efficiency combined to the DWDM ROADM. Control plane integration to the ROADM is becoming a mandatory requirement. SDN is raising up in the market as the unified and centralized multilayer control plane option. Within the SDN time for evolving and consolidation GMPLS continues as a mandatory requirement. Transport Network Keep On Evaluating GMPLS continues as a mandatory requirement. The approach of simplified equipment/protocols deployed along the transport network has been empowered by the SDN and/or NFV. The more complex functions trend to be centralized and even virtualized. Is time to start the proof of concept of SDN and NFV in order to start shaping the network for the future. Will they be the new disruption in the Operator/Service Provider networks??
