Mycoplasmas are the smallest free-living organisms lacking a cell wall. They range from 0.2-0.3 μm in size and are bounded by a single membrane. Mycoplasmas are pleomorphic, occurring in coccoidal or filamentous shapes. They reproduce by binary fission or budding and are resistant to some antibiotics like penicillin but sensitive to tetracycline and chloramphenicol. Mycoplasmas require rich media with sterols and serum for growth at 35-37°C and form small transparent colonies visible under low magnification.
