What is attenuator?
It is an electronic passive device that reduces power of a
Signal without appreciably distorting its waveform
It is effectively the opposite of an amplifier
Reflects and absorbs energy in some dissipate elements
How it is made?
It is made from a simple voltage divider networks which
is utilized to control the transferred microwave power
between two points
Is it frequency dependent?
Attenuation is a function of frequency
Fixed type attenuator
Used to lower voltage, dissipate power
Used for impedance matching
Utilized where a fixed amount of power is required
If it absorbs all energy entering into it, then it is called
waveguide attenuator

Average and peak power handling capability
Flatness with frequency
Temperature dependence
Variable type attenuator
Provides step-wise or continuously variable attenuation
Types
Rotary type for circular waveguide
Flap or vane type for rectangular waveguide
Variable attenuator: Flap type
Lossy

Variable attenuator: Flap type
Semi-circular flap of lossy dielectric is made to move down
Into the longitudinal slot
Degree of attenuation is controlled by depth of assertion
Variable attenuator: Vane type
Dielectric
rods
Variable attenuator: Vane type
When vane(dielectric rods) moved at edges, max attenuation
is obtained
At center, attenuation is zero

  • 2. What is attenuator? It is an electronic passive device that reduces power of a Signal without appreciably distorting its waveform It is effectively the opposite of an amplifier Reflects and absorbs energy in some dissipate elements
  • 3. How it is made? It is made from a simple voltage divider networks which is utilized to control the transferred microwave power between two points Is it frequency dependent? Attenuation is a function of frequency
  • 4. Fixed type attenuator Used to lower voltage, dissipate power Used for impedance matching Utilized where a fixed amount of power is required If it absorbs all energy entering into it, then it is called waveguide attenuator
  • 6. Fixed type attenuator: performance characteristics Input and output impedances Average and peak power handling capability Flatness with frequency Temperature dependence
  • 7. Variable type attenuator Provides step-wise or continuously variable attenuation Types Rotary type for circular waveguide Flap or vane type for rectangular waveguide
  • 8. Variable attenuator: Flap type Lossy dielectric flap
  • 9. Variable attenuator: Flap type Semi-circular flap of lossy dielectric is made to move down Into the longitudinal slot Degree of attenuation is controlled by depth of assertion
