The first stop on my CPR tour was the Crystal City Underground. This awesome cave sits in the heart
Crystal City, which is located about 30 miles south of St Louis, MO. Carved into the Mississippi river
bluff this cavern was once an active sand mine serving a local glass plant, Pittsburgh Plate Glass
factory, with materials for almost a century. In the 1980 s the plant and the mine were closed, allowing
water that was pumped out for decades to begin to flood portions of the cave. The recent owners of
this cave decided to turn the property into a tourist attraction. They built up area s for children to
explore, adults to play games, a stage for bands to play, a sitting area with large TV s for sports and
other event enjoyment, and barges to take tours on while exploring the depths of vastness this cave has
to offer. On the day of my arrival I had the pleasure of experiencing a dark path being well lit with
over 400 carved pumpkins along what was pleasantly titled the Great Pumpkin Walk. As I ventured
along I could see multiple paths that led to deeper parts of the cavern. Many of these paths were

Breaking Out In the Fights For Gay Rights, author Ann Bausum starts the book off by going into a
complete and brutal overview on how gay people were treated in a time before the Stonewall Riots.
She then goes on to cover how exactly the first riot and the ones coming directly after happened, using
sources from both sides of the conflicts, including police officers and people who had been run from
the Stonewall inn. She continues by going into the aftereffects of the riots and into the AIDS crisis that
hit the community nearly two decades after. The book is ended on a hopeful note, saying that the
future can only look up from here for the queer community. Ann Bausum, while straight, did a very
large amount of research before writing this book. She has a three page bibliography at the end of the
book, listing all of her sources and where she got all the quotes that were littered throughout the book.
She mentions in the book that since she is not Queer, some parts of the novel may not be truly

After several months of battles between the north and the south in several states, including North
Carolina, Virginia, Missouri, Kentucky and Tennessee, the war reached Florida in 1861. The first
battle to reach Florida occurred when there was a standoff at Fort Pickens. When Florida seceded from
the Union, there were Union soldiers stationed at Fort Pickens that were asked to surrender. A force of
almost 1,000 volunteer soldiers landed on Santa Rosa Island with the intent of raiding the outlying
