Star Trek Comparison
May the force be with you, I have a bad feeling about this, and Live long and Prosper are three quotes
from two major media franchises. Since their inception these two franchises have changed or shaped
our imagination and future. They are Star Wars and Star Trek, both have similarities but even more
differences that will be found in the general ideas, background info, and impacts of real life. From a
first look the two are the same however when looked at closer there general ideas are seen to be quite
different when not generalized. This can be seen with the plots, which can seem like both are about
some space futuristic combat. However Star Wars is a series of events in a galaxy at war, either in
formal or secretive conflict, where ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first difference is the background history, Star Wars takes place in a distant universe in a galaxy
far far away. That has its own cultures and ideologies based on a mixture of our own. While on the
other spectrum Star Trek is a more realistic future in which the earth has expanded into space with
other galactic civilizations to create a space federation to protect themselves from other united galactic
civilizations, while also exploring the unknown. From that other background comes knowledge and
mystics. The big difference here is that Star Wars has a mystic knowledge that is held by the Jedi and
Sith who have protected the galaxy since the beginning, but in Star Trek all of the knowledge comes
from learning, and has no true mysticism in it. Just following facts and common knowledge to do what
needs to be done. Putting the knowledge and histories difference together that also influences the tools
that both franchises use. Like Star War s history being created from all of the history its tools is also
more imaginary being Lightsabers weapons, planet destroying Deathstars, and Hyperspace
transportation. In reverse like the basis of a futuristic history Star Treks is based on what is possible to
come like Transporters, phasers, and warp drives. Which have a more realistic thought of what could
be created, and with what could possible happen what are the differences in the real life portion of the

The Concept of Advanced Civilization Led to the European...
During the European conquests of the 16th and 17th centuries, the concept of an advanced civilization
was essential most of the time. This can be supported by the strategic Spanish conquests, Portuguese
exploration, and the Dutch trading empire.
To begin with, North and South America, which had existed in isolation for thousands of years, came
into contact with the rest of the world via the Italian explorer, Christopher Columbus. In 1492, he was
sent by Spain to look for a route to India. Rather, Columbus came into contact with a Caribbean
island. This marked the beginning of Spanish invasion of the Americas, who were in search of gold.
Perhaps the most profound Spanish conquistadors were Hernan Cortez and Francisco Pizzaro, who ...

The Incas had no knowledge of the wheel, arch construction, or writing, but they managed a society in
the Andes. Pizzaro arrived with 180 men and 30 horses, and decided to meet with the ruler, Athualpa,
under an agreement of having unarmed body guards. As the gold covered ruler agreed, he was
immediately stripped of his gold headband and one blast of his cannon and small army slaughtered the
Inca warriors 50,000. Atuhualpa tried to free himself by offering a 17ft by 22ft by 9ft room of gold.
The Spanish took the offer, but still murdered Atuahulpa to show that they could not be trusted so that
others would abide by their rule. The contact between the Americas and the Old World began
biological exchange of animals and foods which greatly benefited trade.
Additionally, Vasco de Gama was a Portuguese explorer who discovered an ocean route to India, in
1498, by going under the tip of Africa, or Cape of Good Hope. This way avoided conflicts with the
Ottoman Turks and led one directly into the fast moving currents of the Indian Ocean. This plan was
carefully devised by skilled Portuguese mapmakers and navigators. Since this way was known, many
rulers such as the Sultan of Manindi, offered the Portugese captain a pilot to guide his ships to trade
for spices, gems, and fine (cotton, paper, porcelain, silk, glass, carpets) textiles. The Asian trading
network, however were not interested in Portuguese goods such as iron

Climate Change and Environmental Issues
Environmental Issues Climate Change Introduction Is global warming due to human activity or not? Is
there something societies around the world can do to halt the warming of the planet? What is the key
to societies developing a sustainable world and how do environmental dynamics impact
sustainability? These questions and others will be addressed from several perspectives in this paper. Is
global warming due to human activities? The view of Scientists The most authoritative and objective
source of information on climate change (or global warming, as some prefer to use) is the
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a group that began researching climate change in
1992. The IPCC was launched by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World
Meteorological Organizations (WMO) in order to ...provide an objective source of scientific
information (UN.org). It was clear by the middle of the 20th century, the UN explains, that as a ...side
effect of the industrial age...human action had significantly increased the production of...carbon
dioxide one of the main greenhouse gases that contributes to global climate change. The IPCC has its
next major report due out in 2014, and while the IPCC does publish occasional white paper findings
between their major reports, the most recent report is called the Climate Change 2007: Working Group

An Analysis Of Haruki Murakami s On Seeing The 100 %...
The concept of fate and destiny continues to prevail mankind and it is usually associated with the kind
of romance that is meant to be . At a certain point in our lives, we encounter an individual whom we
feel an immediate connection to. There is a belief that if two hearts are meant for each other, fate will
bring the two individuals together. Until now, this idea continues to bewilder people and it makes
them think whether fate and destiny truly exists or are important encounters just a coincidence. Haruki
Murakami s On Seeing the 100% Perfect Girl One Beautiful April Morning depicts how an individual
missed an ideal opportunity, which is caused by his preoccupation with fantasy rather than facing
reality. Haruki Murakami is known for his unique writing style since he effectively blends normality
with surrealism. Majority of his short stories deal with recurring melancholic themes such as loss and
loneliness. In addition, his stories are usually in the first person narrative for he wants his main
character to be an independent being who values solitude over romance. All of these characteristics
are well manifested in the short story that will be analyzed. On Seeing the 100% Perfect Girl One
Beautiful April Morning is a bittersweet love story that is set in the streets of Tokyo s Harujuku
neighborhood, in which a boy passes by a girl whom he deemed as the 100% perfect girl for him. The

Glorious Revolution and American Revolution
Each revolution is an innovation , whether it is bloody or not. British did well in revolution, so did
America, though they happened in a different era. However, because British had achieved the
accomplishment successfully, such as ended the monarchy peacefully and distributed the rights to the
parliament. It set an example for other countries and this impacted them drastically. The documents;
the reason why they rebelled; the legacy they left are so similar that people generally consider the
Glorious Revolution as the forerunner of the America Revolution.

700 British troops march into Lexington. The British met only 77 minutemen, and at first were
pleased to allow them to leave. Suddenly, from some unknown place a shot was fired, and the British
opened up on the Americans. A cloud of musket smoke soon covered the green. When the brief Battle
of Lexington ended, eight Americans were dead and 10 others were wounded. Only one British soldier
was injured, but the American Revolution had begun. At this point it was obvious to see that the
British had a bigger and better army, and the American only had the militia. However, at Concord, the
militia used a tactic called guerrilla. Guerrilla was a kind of tactic that utilized the geography feature
to have advantage during the battles. Militias just shot enemies randomly and then they hid, so that the
British troops were really confused about where their enemies were. This time the American militias
were prepared, with this tactic, the Americans routed the British all the way back to Boston. There
were nearly 300 British casualties, including 73 dead and 23 missing. The Americans suffered less

Best Wrestlers In Professional Wrestling
Every year the biggest event in all of professional wrestling is held; which is known as wrestlemania.
Everybody came to watch everyone to wrestle, but that was before the appearance of the Undertaker.
He was the most demonic wrestler of all time. He was straight from hell. He started preying on some
of the best wrestlers of all the wwe. He started with Jimmy Snuka, Jake The Snake Roberts (2 0),
Giant Gonzalez (3 0), King Kong Bundy (4 0), Diesel (5 0). Every year he came back for more. He
was stronger than any other man that s ever been in the ring.. This phenom was like nothing anyone
had ever seen. He tore them apart, had no mercy, and did not care who it was he beat them. Man after
man he rolled through them taking one win at a time. Some wondered when this terror would end
others thought that it would not. Every year he would come back for another superstar, he knew no
limit. Vince McMahon (the owner of the wwe) was getting worried that this terror that reigned over
them would last forever. He sent his best wrestlers after him and time and time again they came back
empty handed. He tried to plead with him, he sent in some of his lower wrestlers as sacrifices, but

Perks Of Being A Wallflower Essay
After beginning to read The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky, I have realized that this
is definitely a story about growing up and just facing the trials of being a teenager. The book is made
up of letters written from the point of view of a freshman in highschool named Charlie. He is a very
interesting and dynamic character but, he is also very relatable. In many ways he is similar to the
teenagers of today, even though the letters are dated in the early 1990s. However, Charlie struggles to
understand people and simple social cues which makes me wonder if he has a mental disability. First,
Charlie has no shame and does not grasp the concept of privacy, on many occasions he witnesses
things that are normally done in private. For example, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

refuse him, he lets them use his room while he reads a book. This makes me think that Charlie has a
type of disability because any other person would have refused the couple and sent them away. He is
also brutally honest with people and speaks without thinking about the consequences. For example,
when he has a dream about Sam being naked he feels obligated to tell her and apologize. Under
normal circumstances there is no way any teenage boy would tell anyone but his guy friends about the
dream yet, Charlie feels guilty so he cries and tells Sam. Another reason I think Charlie has a mental
handicap is the way his family treats him. When he accidently tells his english teacher that her sister
was being abused by her boyfriend Charlie s parents confront their daughter and make sure that she is

The Role Of Robots
I imagine my future with robots, advanced phone, flying cars and much more. A lot of people think
that robots will take over the world and take people s job, etc. Robots are being use to go to war and
taking people s jobs. Robots are operating environment, the relatively high initial cost of robots means
that they tend to be only used by large companies or in defence. It is unlikely that all the humans will
be replaced by robots in any task, it is much more likely that fewer people will be needed because for
many years robots will be assistants. Robots are usually thought of as being mobile but they don t
have to be. For example, washing machines, dishwashers, and tumble driers can also be thought of as
robots. The future is most likely to be one of productivity gains. They are trying to put brains and
several sensors and actuators in robots. The technology has been available for many years. The
advances happening in technology and it s becoming that evident that computers, machines, robots,
and other things are going to be able to do most of the routine, and repetitive types of jobs. A lot of
skills levels fall into that category. People with college degrees, even professional degrees, also
lawyers are doing things that ultimately are predictable. A lot of those jobs are going to be susceptible
over time. Right now there s still a lot of debate over it. There are economists who think it s totally

This is designed to provide an incentive for people to work extra hours and keep more of what they
earn.
Changes to the tax and benefit system also seek to reduce the risk of the poverty trap where
households on low incomes see little net financial benefit from supplying extra hours of their labor. If
tax and benefit reforms can improve incentives and lead to an increase in the labor supply, this will
help to reduce the equilibrium rate of unemployment (the NAIRU) and thereby increase the economy
s non inflationary growth rate.
Changes to indirect taxes in particular can have an effect on the pattern of demand for goods and
services. For example, the rising value of duty on cigarettes and alcohol is designed to cause a
substitution effect among consumers and thereby reduce the demand for what are perceived as de
merit goods . In contrast, a government financial subsidy to producers has the effect of reducing their
costs of production, lowering the market price and encouraging an expansion of demand.
The use of indirect taxation and subsidies is often justified on the grounds of instances of market
failure. But there might also be a justification based on achieving a more equitable allocation of
resources e.g. providing basic state health care free at the point of use.
Lower rates of corporation tax and other business taxes can stimulate an increase in business fixed
capital

Brown Adipocytes Research Paper
Adipocytes in human white adipose tissues can change from white to brown and oppositely .Fat is
mostly stored in white adipose tissue (WAT). Brown adipose tissue (BAT) is additional fat storage,
which in contrast to white adipose tissue is capable to produce heat and preserve body temperature.
Brown adipocytes are located in the brown adipose tissue and smaller populations were recognized
within white adipose tissue. Brown adipose tissue developed in mammals to dissipate large amounts
of biochemical energy in form of heat for protection from the cold. Upon cold exposure, brown
adipose tissue is activated by central nervous system (CNS) mechanisms over and done with the
sympathetic nervous system(160). 160
The thermogenic response in brown adipocytes is mediated by matchlessly augmented mitochondria
expressing thermogenin (also called uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) in the inner membrane.UCP1 lets
brown adipocytes to dissipate the electrochemical gradient that is normally used to drive ATP
synthesis. But, the thermogenic response cannot only be explained by UCP1, as the expression of
numerous genes complicated in energy metabolism is increased in experimental animals to a cold
environment. Lately the significance of NPRA and NPRB in brown adipose tissue is discovered (160).

Gender Roles In Kate Chopin s The Awakening
Kate Chopin s novel, The Awakening, was widely and harshly criticized at the time of its publication
in 1899. Critics felt such outrage over the novel, that many would call it morbid and vulgar. One of the
reasons that The Awakening faced such strong moral outcry was because of its depiction of female
sexuality and the gender roles of the time. At the turn of the 20th century women were expected to be
mothers and wives, not to lead their own lives full desires and dreams. Women of the Victorian era
were not allowed to be sexual beings, nor were they allowed to explore their who they were without
men. The male gender role at the time dictated that men not have close relationships with women, that
they were completely free to do as they wished ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Adele exemplifies the perfect Victorian woman. Adele is depicts the perfect mother who would do
anything for her children. They were designed for winter wear (Chopin 52). This shows Madame
Ratignolle s perfection as a mother because she is thinking about the future needs of her children. In
fact, Adele is shown to be so caught up in being the perfect Victorian woman that she is unable to
understand that she could be more than just a mother and a wife. But a woman who would give her
life for her children could do no more than that (97). This is important because it illustrates that Adele
is so absorbed in the typical female gender role that she is unable to separate herself and her identity
from it. Madame Ratignolle s strict adherence to the Victorian gender roles is used by Chopin to show
how old fashioned and outdated they are, while also demonstrating the way in which society clings to
them. Throughout the novel the contrast between Adele and Edna is shown as a way of criticizing the
lack of freedom women have in society due to the gender

Nt1310 Unit 3 Project Part 2 Types Of Equipment
Project Part 2: Types of Equipment There are various types of equipment that the company should
look for when considering this network. The first item to look at when considering equipment is the
Operating system and software that we would need. Next, the group took into consideration the type
of server the company needs to make this network a reality. Another thing that we looked at is the
possibility of having ThinClients over regular desktops for all workstations. Of course, it was taken
into consideration that some employees would not want ThinClients. So, we show the type of tower
we plan to place into those spaces, along with any peripheral device for both. Then, we will look at the
network devices that will go into each building that include switches, routers, repeaters, hubs, and
wireless access points. Finally, the group will note guidelines for choosing a local ISP at each site.
Each Item outlined helps to build a network based on the specifications given by the company.

advantages Linux are the cost. There is zero cost to download and maintain the Linux system. Not

Edward Bernett Was An English Anthropologist And The...
Edward Bernett Tylor was an English anthropologist and the founder of cultural anthropology. Tylor
was focused on defining the context of the scientific study of anthropology that was based on
evolutionary theories inspired by Darwin and Lyell. His stance as an evolutionist fueled his belief that
researching the prehistory and the history of man could be used to compare and reform modern
societies. Therefore, through the use of the comparative method and historical ethnography, which
included travel logs, Tylor attempted to reveal the stages of development of cultures/civilizations.
Tylor s defines culture and civilization as a phenomena related according to definite Laws Methods of
classification and discussion of evidence Connexion of successive stages of culture by, Permanence,
Modification, and Survival... it is that complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, morals,
law, custom and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society (28). His
definition of culture led him to believe that uniformity was manifested in culture, which resulted in
uniform actions enabling uniform causes. Furthermore, Tylor states that stages of culture may be
compared without taking into account how far tribes who use the same implement, follow the same
custom, or believe the same myth, may differ in their body configuration and the color of their skin
and hair (31). Meaning that although groups of humans are different through the analysis of parallel

Voltmeter Construction
ABSTRACT
The objective of this project is to design LCD digital oscilloscope for practical use. The basic concept
for the project involves reading the voltage signal at the input and displaying it on the screen of an
alphanumeric LCD. The input analog signals are supplied to the ADC(Analog to Digital Converter),
which are then sampled by it and the amplitude of the signal(voltage) is displayed on the LCD.
Device Components:
Microcontroller or processor:
We used Atmega16 an Atmel AVR series microcontroller. The processor clock was set to 11MHz
internal oscillator.
Analog to Digital Converter:
In this device we use Atmega16 s inbuilt analog to digital converter. It is a 10 bit ADC which uses the

As the name implies it uses analogue techniques throughout to create the pattern on the display.
Typically they use a cathode ray tube where the voltages on the x and y plats cause a dot on the screen
to move. In the horizontal direction this is controlled by the time base, whereas in the vertical
direction the deflection is proportional to the signal input. Essentially the signal is amplified and
applied to the Y plates of the cathode ray tube.
A cathode ray tube consists of a number of elements. There is an electron gun that generates an
electron beam that is fired along the length of the tube. This beam passes by deflection plates that are
used to deflect the beam, as a result of electrostatic attraction and repulsion, and finally the beam hits
a phosphor coating on the screen creating a small dot of light.
To assist in making the trace as clear as possible, intensity and focus controls are included. The focus
ensures that the dot that scans the screen remains as sharp as possible and in this way it can deliver a
clear trace. The intensity control is required because the intensity of the dot or trace varies according
to the speed at which the scan is made. Controlling the intensity enables a clear trace to be obtained.
When the scan is very slow the dot is seen to traverse the screen and it is difficult to visualize the

The Serpent King
The Asian Art Museum of San Francisco at Civic Center offers a collection of artworks from Asia.
Pieces of sculpture, carvings, paintings, and ornate jewelry from Asia that were on display were all
shaped by the artists who created them who in turn is shaped by the culture and environment that
surrounded them. This is particularly evident the Mathura and Gandhara region where the medium
influences the sculpture greatly. The Serpent King (Nagaraja), Fig. 1, comes from the Mathura region
of India, in the Uttar Pradesh State and stands at about three feet tall but seems larger as it looms over
the viewer on the pedestal. The sculpture is made of red sandstone and is believed to have been made
in 207. The Region of Mathura became a trading ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The different use of medium is the first indication of their difference. The sculptor of the Bodhisattva
from Gandhara, Fig. 2, was able to carve and sculpt in greater detail because of the Schist that they
used. Schist is darker in color, almost black, smoother in texture and looks harder that sandstone. This
type of medium allowed sculptors to have a totally different style and approach than that of sculptors
from the Mathura region. With the ability of being able to carve even more details comes a totally
different physical look on the sculpture. The faces of the figure are more sculpted and more defined
yet it still retains a rounded and fleshy look. Some facial features including the eyebrows, eyes, nose
bridge and lips were carved to look sharper. There are heavier and deeper details on the hair, the
ornaments, the jewelry, and lines that make up the drapery, allowing a more realistic style of carving.
The body of the figures are still created as fleshy and rounded as the India culture preferred. The
Bodhisattva sculpture was made in 200 350 while the Nagaraja sculpture was created in 207. Study of

Mr. Reynolds gives the ambushes and shootouts, filmed in Romania, a shambling, ugly realism (Hale

Borders Made By Our Language. Imagine Moving To A New Country
Borders Made by Our Language Imagine moving to a new country and having to learn a foreign
language. You do not seem able to speak without your accent and some words in your native language
are coming out instead. Furthermore, you are unable to speak without pausing after almost every
word. You are constantly looked down upon. People constantly correct your pronunciation and word
choice. People look at you like you are not even speaking the same language. Thus, you only speak
with people in your same social structure. They like yourself moved and had to learn the language of
your new home. So, together you kept your native language alive and only talk to them because you

This definition is further expanded by Gloria Anzaldúa in How to Tame a Wild Tongue . In How to

Mexican accent when she spoke English. They claimed that in order to be American, [she had to]
speak American, if not she should go back to Mexico (p.144). This was further enforced by her mother
by stating, I want you to speak English without an accent, so that Anzaldúa can have a good job (p.

border, like the U.S. Mexico border, you must speak the country s national language. Furthermore,
you must speak it the way that it is spoken among the people and you cannot have your native tongue
accent. Due to her mother s support, this belief is not only supported by the people born in the country,
but by the those who immigrated. Anzaldúa expands to claim that they are not only physical borders,
but at the same time they are figurative borers. According to Anzaldúa, they are figurative, linguistic
borders have a dual purpose for that separating and forming an identity. Anzaldúa (1987) claims that
the Chicano Spanish, English and Spanish mixed together, developed naturally because of the
Chicanos need to identify [themselves] as distinct people (p. 146). This was because they

The Nonhuman World Exhibits Beauty Of Its Own And That Humans
Looking over the vast expanses of the American landscape, staring up into a starry sky, or watching
spring return and animals rear their young, one cannot help but see beauty in nature. Some people find
beauty even in the smallest of creatures and things. The earth is full of wonder. At the same time,
driving across certain places, where humans have scarred the landscape, ugliness appears. The marred
landscapes in which humans have clear cut a forest, obliterated a mountain, or dumped waste can
destroy the natural beauty that nature once exhibited. In this paper I will argue that the nonhuman
world exhibits beauty of its own and that humans can either enhance or deface this beauty.
Defining what makes something beautiful is a huge endeavor. Philosophers have argued for centuries
over the simple question, What is beauty? This is a question that is probably unanswerable. Beauty is
in the eye of the beholder and based on personal experiences and varies from person to person; it is
subjective. We call a variety of things beautiful : a landscape; various nonhuman animals; a young
woman; a painting; a symphony. We may even say that an action, such as a gazelle leaping across a
field or a well executed sports play, is beautiful. Even if we cannot define exactly what beauty is as a
quality in something or a quality within the beholder, everyone somehow believes that some things are
beautiful in some way.
We often use this variable description for the nonhuman world. When we look

This retrospective study also looked at factors affecting vascular access. The study sampled 544
patients needing vascular access at a renal service of the University Hospital Valle de Hebron of
Barcelona between 1 January 1985 and 31 December 1997. This long time period (13years) makes the
study useful for measuring the duration of patency.
The aims of the study were clearly highlighted and were consistently referred to throughout the study.
Multiple factors were taken into account such as demographic characteristics of patients, the site of
VA, primary renal disease and duration of function.
Primary renal disease was categorised into: glomerular, interstitial, vascular cystic (ADPKD), or
diabetic nephropathy and others. This made it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unlike the previous study, factors such as age, female gender, diabetes, catheter insertions before
dialysis and lack of maturation process were seen as possible factors that accounted for the failure of
Vascular Access.
Despite the sample size, the study cannot be representative to all populations because it was
undertaken in one hospital in Barcelona; other patient demographics such as race, socioeconomic
status were also not taken into consideration.
Due to the nature of the study being retrospective it was harder to control exposure and outcome.
The assessment of the patients was standardized; by using the same vascular surgeon to assess the
patients needing Vascular Access. However, the study failed to not mention how the other patient data
was collected thus increasing the number of confounding factors
Although statistical analysis was conducted and Confidence Intervals and P values were included the
main limitation was that there were no statistical analysis performed between AV fistulas and AV
grafts, this was because AV fistulas was the priority operation to perform unless other factors deemed
it not possible then an AV grafts would be created instead.
The study also recognised that confounding factors like vessel diameter could also contribute to for
such a high initial failure in radiocephalic fistulas but it was not directly measured. The study also
failed to also take into consideration late referrals that

Bob Dylan. Bob Dylan is considered to be the greatest influence on popular culture of all time.

Bob Dylan, was becoming an increasingly popular musician. Despite Dylan s goal to become a
famous rock n roll star, he soon became known as a folk singer. Most of his influences were from
country, folk, and rhythm and blues. One of his biggest role models was folk musician Woody Guthrie
Bob even adopted Guthrie s Okie accent. That was the tradition of folk music borrowing from other
artists. Dylan
4 borrowed from just about every blues or folk performer he ever saw; the music belonged to no
one. 12 In 1961, Dylan s dreams were becoming a reality he was finally going to become a star.
Columbia Records offered Dylan a contract, and in March of 1962, he released his first album, Bob
Dylan, and his second, The Freewheelin Bob Dylan, in 1963. It was around this time that Bob started
writing his protest songs (also called finger pointing songs sincere expressions of frustration towards
leaders who opposed change13), in response to the beginning of the civil rights movement. There are
several catalysts that led up to the civil rights movement. The integration of major league baseball in
1947 and Truman s proposal to integrate the armed forces were both pawns in starting the movement.
Also, the integration of schools in 1954 was a major event in history; the Supreme Court ruled that
separate but equal in schools was no longer tolerable. In the next year, an event took place that would
change the course of the movement. On December 1, 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, Rosa

Character Analysis Of Eleanor Catton s The Luminaries
In 1866, many people had dreams to make fortunes from the gold rushes around the world. The main
character in The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton follows this same dream. The story follows Walter
Moody on his adventure at a place called Hokitika with a common dream; to become a rich gold
miner. Upon his arrival, he is immediately introduced to an investigation of a mysterious crime. With
this knowledge, Moody has to follow the speculated ideas of the town members to try to piece
together and put apart the dream and the reality. Throughout the novel, Moody becomes more trusting
and gets an ambition to help the people. Walter Moody advances in the community of Hokitika
through accepting the reality making him more trusting and ambitious with his goals of helping the
town while letting go of the dream he previously held.
During the beginning of the novel, Walter Moody has a dream to make a fortune through digging gold
out of the mines in the town Hokitika. Upon his arrival he finds himself in the middle of a group of
people trying to piece together the incident that had occurred on the night of the 14th of January.
Moody does not trust this room of people. This is seen as he holds simple information from them, like
he did with a man named Balfour who was trying to find out what issues he was facing. He would
hide information constantly by saying things like The particulars are delicate (Catton 24). Moody, who
is still skeptical of the people, keeps to himself throughout

Government Corruption In Canada
A corrupt government can be a severe impediment to the progress of a country.
The main types of corruption as defined by the UN are that of petty and grand corruption. Petty
corruption mostly entails non elected individuals working in public regions of society such as service
receptionists or police officers. Grand corruption deals with elected officials usually in high power
positions. An example of grand corruption could be corruption from the elected members of a country.
Canada ranked ninth with a score of 82 out of 100 on the Corruption Perceptions Index
2016 monitored by a non profit organization called Transparency International. In that report the
average global score out of a 100 was 43. This implies that Canada is doing well amongst the worlds
nations but can do better. Acts of corruption have a significant impact in the country experiencing it.
Therefore reducing the likelihood of corruption is of great benefit to the country of Canada.
Corruption in the Canadian Government is an issue that is relevant to the society of Canada. The
effects corruption has on Canada and the ways Canada chooses to lessen this corruption will be further
explored here.

The Cell Cycle And Dna Replication
Question 1:
a)
The two processes, with which a cell passes this DNA sequence onto other cells, are DNA replication
and mitosis. The cell cycle is inclusive of mitosis and DNA replication, the latter of which occurs in
the S phase (synthesis) of the cycle. The goal of the S phase is to create two identical semi
conservative chromosomes. The enzyme helicase unwinds the parental DNA double helix strand and
uses it as a template so the enzyme DNA polymerase can attach free floating nucleotides to the
separate DNA daughter strands using the complementary base pairing rule, in which A T and C G pair
together. In this way, the process of DNA replication is deemed semi conservative as one parental
strand is always passed on to daughter helix of DNA (Campbell Reece, 2005).
Now that the DNA has been replicated, mitosis can occur, which entails the cell (which now contains
two strands of identical DNA) undergoing nuclear division that results in the formation of two
genetically identical daughter cells (Tortora Grabowski, 2003). Mitosis is a process which consists of
five phases in itself; prophase, prometaphase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase/cytokinesis. The
duplicated chromosomes are now known as sister chromatids which are attached at a centre point
called a centromere. During prophase, these chromatids inside the cell condense and become tightly
coiled, and also, a mitotic spindle begins to form. In prometaphase, the nuclear membrane of the cell
fragments and one

A Concrete Human Existence, And The Conditions Of Such...

Thematic Project Outline
Introduction
Thesis.
Existentialists focus on the question that is a concrete human existence, and the conditions of such
existence; they do not dwell on a hypothesis for human essence, instead they stress that this essence is
determined by an individual s own life choices. Although humans live in the world, a distance is
created in order to add meaning to the disinterested world; however, this meaning is fragile and can be
disturbed by tragedy or insight. When this disturbance occurs, and human s precarious lives crumble,
the true nature of the world is revealed; a nature that shows little importance for humans; this way of
thinking created the, post WWII era, worldwide explosion of ambiguous literature, and the sensory
perception of art and music; heavily influenced by the idea of human worthlessness.
Literature Existentialism, though it had been present since the 19th century, came of age in the mid
20th Century. This was largely through the scholarly and fictional works of the French existentialists,
Jean Paul Sartre, Albert Camus and Simone de Beauvoir. The heavily influenced post WWII
movement spurred up a whole new way of thinking. Sartre made the movement popular in that he
defined Existentialism and wrote many works solely centered on his views.
Simone de Beauvoir An important existentialist who spent much of her life alongside Sartre, wrote
about feminism, and existential ethics

The Dumbest Generation The Dumbest Generation

app made learning sign language easy, and I could use it wherever I went. I thought that I was smart

Lamentations 1-3 Poem
In Lamentations 1 3, The whole metropolis of Judah was destroyed and the people who were not
murdered were captured and made slaves in Babylon. The people who survived the destruction of
Judah suffered immensely with no rest due to their new lives of hard servitude. This was believed to
have happened because rulers or kings had mistreated the children of Israel.
It is often necessary to express intense feelings when facing a tragedy, or in order to face a tragedy.
Sometimes fears may clearly be recognized as such and confronted openly but other times an outlet is
needed in order to release negative emotions, this supports the fact that Lamentations 1 3 and Psalm

Victory In The Civil War
There are various factors that lead to victory. That s a fact for all competitions: battles and wars.
Motivation, environment, population, and resources seem to be the biggest factors. The War for
Independence, for example, was a war where most people could predict the outcome an overwhelming
British victory. However, the opposite happened. The people without a powerful government,
inexperienced soldiers, and a weak economy won. The British had a decent population and plenty of
resources, colonists, however, radiated motivation and fought the war on their own land. The situation
was different for the Civil War, though. Determination was shown by the South and the fight was on
their land, but the North excelled in population and resources.

  • 3. Star Trek Comparison May the force be with you, I have a bad feeling about this, and Live long and Prosper are three quotes from two major media franchises. Since their inception these two franchises have changed or shaped our imagination and future. They are Star Wars and Star Trek, both have similarities but even more differences that will be found in the general ideas, background info, and impacts of real life. From a first look the two are the same however when looked at closer there general ideas are seen to be quite different when not generalized. This can be seen with the plots, which can seem like both are about some space futuristic combat. However Star Wars is a series of events in a galaxy at war, either in formal or secretive conflict, where ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first difference is the background history, Star Wars takes place in a distant universe in a galaxy far far away. That has its own cultures and ideologies based on a mixture of our own. While on the other spectrum Star Trek is a more realistic future in which the earth has expanded into space with other galactic civilizations to create a space federation to protect themselves from other united galactic civilizations, while also exploring the unknown. From that other background comes knowledge and mystics. The big difference here is that Star Wars has a mystic knowledge that is held by the Jedi and Sith who have protected the galaxy since the beginning, but in Star Trek all of the knowledge comes from learning, and has no true mysticism in it. Just following facts and common knowledge to do what needs to be done. Putting the knowledge and histories difference together that also influences the tools that both franchises use. Like Star War s history being created from all of the history its tools is also more imaginary being Lightsabers weapons, planet destroying Deathstars, and Hyperspace transportation. In reverse like the basis of a futuristic history Star Treks is based on what is possible to come like Transporters, phasers, and warp drives. Which have a more realistic thought of what could be created, and with what could possible happen what are the differences in the real life portion of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Concept of Advanced Civilization Led to the European... During the European conquests of the 16th and 17th centuries, the concept of an advanced civilization was essential most of the time. This can be supported by the strategic Spanish conquests, Portuguese exploration, and the Dutch trading empire. To begin with, North and South America, which had existed in isolation for thousands of years, came into contact with the rest of the world via the Italian explorer, Christopher Columbus. In 1492, he was sent by Spain to look for a route to India. Rather, Columbus came into contact with a Caribbean island. This marked the beginning of Spanish invasion of the Americas, who were in search of gold. Perhaps the most profound Spanish conquistadors were Hernan Cortez and Francisco Pizzaro, who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Incas had no knowledge of the wheel, arch construction, or writing, but they managed a society in the Andes. Pizzaro arrived with 180 men and 30 horses, and decided to meet with the ruler, Athualpa, under an agreement of having unarmed body guards. As the gold covered ruler agreed, he was immediately stripped of his gold headband and one blast of his cannon and small army slaughtered the Inca warriors 50,000. Atuhualpa tried to free himself by offering a 17ft by 22ft by 9ft room of gold. The Spanish took the offer, but still murdered Atuahulpa to show that they could not be trusted so that others would abide by their rule. The contact between the Americas and the Old World began biological exchange of animals and foods which greatly benefited trade. Additionally, Vasco de Gama was a Portuguese explorer who discovered an ocean route to India, in 1498, by going under the tip of Africa, or Cape of Good Hope. This way avoided conflicts with the Ottoman Turks and led one directly into the fast moving currents of the Indian Ocean. This plan was carefully devised by skilled Portuguese mapmakers and navigators. Since this way was known, many rulers such as the Sultan of Manindi, offered the Portugese captain a pilot to guide his ships to trade for spices, gems, and fine (cotton, paper, porcelain, silk, glass, carpets) textiles. The Asian trading network, however were not interested in Portuguese goods such as iron ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Is there something societies around the world can do to halt the warming of the planet? What is the key to societies developing a sustainable world and how do environmental dynamics impact sustainability? These questions and others will be addressed from several perspectives in this paper. Is global warming due to human activities? The view of Scientists The most authoritative and objective source of information on climate change (or global warming, as some prefer to use) is the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a group that began researching climate change in 1992. • 6. An Analysis Of Haruki Murakami s On Seeing The 100 %... The concept of fate and destiny continues to prevail mankind and it is usually associated with the kind of romance that is meant to be . At a certain point in our lives, we encounter an individual whom we feel an immediate connection to. There is a belief that if two hearts are meant for each other, fate will bring the two individuals together. Until now, this idea continues to bewilder people and it makes them think whether fate and destiny truly exists or are important encounters just a coincidence. Haruki Murakami s On Seeing the 100% Perfect Girl One Beautiful April Morning depicts how an individual missed an ideal opportunity, which is caused by his preoccupation with fantasy rather than facing reality. Haruki Murakami is known for his unique writing style since he effectively blends normality with surrealism. Majority of his short stories deal with recurring melancholic themes such as loss and loneliness. In addition, his stories are usually in the first person narrative for he wants his main character to be an independent being who values solitude over romance. All of these characteristics are well manifested in the short story that will be analyzed. On Seeing the 100% Perfect Girl One Beautiful April Morning is a bittersweet love story that is set in the streets of Tokyo s Harujuku neighborhood, in which a boy passes by a girl whom he deemed as the 100% perfect girl for him. However, because British had achieved the accomplishment successfully, such as ended the monarchy peacefully and distributed the rights to the parliament. It set an example for other countries and this impacted them drastically. A cloud of musket smoke soon covered the green. When the brief Battle of Lexington ended, eight Americans were dead and 10 others were wounded. Only one British soldier was injured, but the American Revolution had begun. At this point it was obvious to see that the British had a bigger and better army, and the American only had the militia. However, at Concord, the militia used a tactic called guerrilla. Guerrilla was a kind of tactic that utilized the geography feature to have advantage during the battles. Militias just shot enemies randomly and then they hid, so that the British troops were really confused about where their enemies were. Perks Of Being A Wallflower Essay After beginning to read The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky, I have realized that this is definitely a story about growing up and just facing the trials of being a teenager. The book is made up of letters written from the point of view of a freshman in highschool named Charlie. He is a very interesting and dynamic character but, he is also very relatable. In many ways he is similar to the teenagers of today, even though the letters are dated in the early 1990s. However, Charlie struggles to understand people and simple social cues which makes me wonder if he has a mental disability. First, Charlie has no shame and does not grasp the concept of privacy, on many occasions he witnesses things that are normally done in private. For example, ... Charlie doesn t even try to refuse him, he lets them use his room while he reads a book. This makes me think that Charlie has a type of disability because any other person would have refused the couple and sent them away. He is also brutally honest with people and speaks without thinking about the consequences. For example, when he has a dream about Sam being naked he feels obligated to tell her and apologize. Under normal circumstances there is no way any teenage boy would tell anyone but his guy friends about the dream yet, Charlie feels guilty so he cries and tells Sam. Another reason I think Charlie has a mental handicap is the way his family treats him. A lot of people think that robots will take over the world and take people s job, etc. Robots are being use to go to war and taking people s jobs. Robots are operating environment, the relatively high initial cost of robots means that they tend to be only used by large companies or in defence. It is unlikely that all the humans will be replaced by robots in any task, it is much more likely that fewer people will be needed because for many years robots will be assistants. Robots are usually thought of as being mobile but they don t have to be. For example, washing machines, dishwashers, and tumble driers can also be thought of as robots. The future is most likely to be one of productivity gains. They are trying to put brains and several sensors and actuators in robots. The technology has been available for many years. The advances happening in technology and it s becoming that evident that computers, machines, robots, and other things are going to be able to do most of the routine, and repetitive types of jobs. A lot of skills levels fall into that category. People with college degrees, even professional degrees, also lawyers are doing things that ultimately are predictable. This is designed to provide an incentive for people to work extra hours and keep more of what they earn. Changes to the tax and benefit system also seek to reduce the risk of the poverty trap where households on low incomes see little net financial benefit from supplying extra hours of their labor. If tax and benefit reforms can improve incentives and lead to an increase in the labor supply, this will help to reduce the equilibrium rate of unemployment (the NAIRU) and thereby increase the economy s non inflationary growth rate. Changes to indirect taxes in particular can have an effect on the pattern of demand for goods and services. For example, the rising value of duty on cigarettes and alcohol is designed to cause a substitution effect among consumers and thereby reduce the demand for what are perceived as de merit goods . In contrast, a government financial subsidy to producers has the effect of reducing their costs of production, lowering the market price and encouraging an expansion of demand. The use of indirect taxation and subsidies is often justified on the grounds of instances of market failure. But there might also be a justification based on achieving a more equitable allocation of resources e.g. providing basic state health care free at the point of use. Brown adipose tissue (BAT) is additional fat storage, which in contrast to white adipose tissue is capable to produce heat and preserve body temperature. Brown adipocytes are located in the brown adipose tissue and smaller populations were recognized within white adipose tissue. Brown adipose tissue developed in mammals to dissipate large amounts of biochemical energy in form of heat for protection from the cold. Upon cold exposure, brown adipose tissue is activated by central nervous system (CNS) mechanisms over and done with the sympathetic nervous system(160). 160 The thermogenic response in brown adipocytes is mediated by matchlessly augmented mitochondria expressing thermogenin (also called uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) in the inner membrane.UCP1 lets brown adipocytes to dissipate the electrochemical gradient that is normally used to drive ATP synthesis. But, the thermogenic response cannot only be explained by UCP1, as the expression of numerous genes complicated in energy metabolism is increased in experimental animals to a cold environment. • 14. Gender Roles In Kate Chopin s The Awakening Kate Chopin s novel, The Awakening, was widely and harshly criticized at the time of its publication in 1899. Critics felt such outrage over the novel, that many would call it morbid and vulgar. One of the reasons that The Awakening faced such strong moral outcry was because of its depiction of female sexuality and the gender roles of the time. At the turn of the 20th century women were expected to be mothers and wives, not to lead their own lives full desires and dreams. Women of the Victorian era were not allowed to be sexual beings, nor were they allowed to explore their who they were without men. Adele exemplifies the perfect Victorian woman. Adele is depicts the perfect mother who would do anything for her children. They were designed for winter wear (Chopin 52). This shows Madame Ratignolle s perfection as a mother because she is thinking about the future needs of her children. In fact, Adele is shown to be so caught up in being the perfect Victorian woman that she is unable to understand that she could be more than just a mother and a wife. But a woman who would give her life for her children could do no more than that (97). This is important because it illustrates that Adele is so absorbed in the typical female gender role that she is unable to separate herself and her identity from it. Madame Ratignolle s strict adherence to the Victorian gender roles is used by Chopin to show how old fashioned and outdated they are, while also demonstrating the way in which society clings to them. The first item to look at when considering equipment is the Operating system and software that we would need. Next, the group took into consideration the type of server the company needs to make this network a reality. Another thing that we looked at is the possibility of having ThinClients over regular desktops for all workstations. Of course, it was taken into consideration that some employees would not want ThinClients. So, we show the type of tower we plan to place into those spaces, along with any peripheral device for both. Then, we will look at the network devices that will go into each building that include switches, routers, repeaters, hubs, and wireless access points. Finally, the group will note guidelines for choosing a local ISP at each site. Each Item outlined helps to build a network based on the specifications given by the company. • 16. Edward Bernett Was An English Anthropologist And The... Edward Bernett Tylor was an English anthropologist and the founder of cultural anthropology. Tylor was focused on defining the context of the scientific study of anthropology that was based on evolutionary theories inspired by Darwin and Lyell. His stance as an evolutionist fueled his belief that researching the prehistory and the history of man could be used to compare and reform modern societies. Therefore, through the use of the comparative method and historical ethnography, which included travel logs, Tylor attempted to reveal the stages of development of cultures/civilizations. Typically they use a cathode ray tube where the voltages on the x and y plats cause a dot on the screen to move. In the horizontal direction this is controlled by the time base, whereas in the vertical direction the deflection is proportional to the signal input. Essentially the signal is amplified and applied to the Y plates of the cathode ray tube. A cathode ray tube consists of a number of elements. There is an electron gun that generates an electron beam that is fired along the length of the tube. This beam passes by deflection plates that are used to deflect the beam, as a result of electrostatic attraction and repulsion, and finally the beam hits a phosphor coating on the screen creating a small dot of light. To assist in making the trace as clear as possible, intensity and focus controls are included. The focus ensures that the dot that scans the screen remains as sharp as possible and in this way it can deliver a clear trace. The intensity control is required because the intensity of the dot or trace varies according to the speed at which the scan is made. Controlling the intensity enables a clear trace to be obtained. This type of medium allowed sculptors to have a totally different style and approach than that of sculptors from the Mathura region. With the ability of being able to carve even more details comes a totally different physical look on the sculpture. The faces of the figure are more sculpted and more defined yet it still retains a rounded and fleshy look. Some facial features including the eyebrows, eyes, nose bridge and lips were carved to look sharper. • 22. The Nonhuman World Exhibits Beauty Of Its Own And That Humans Looking over the vast expanses of the American landscape, staring up into a starry sky, or watching spring return and animals rear their young, one cannot help but see beauty in nature. Some people find beauty even in the smallest of creatures and things. The earth is full of wonder. At the same time, driving across certain places, where humans have scarred the landscape, ugliness appears. The marred landscapes in which humans have clear cut a forest, obliterated a mountain, or dumped waste can destroy the natural beauty that nature once exhibited. In this paper I will argue that the nonhuman world exhibits beauty of its own and that humans can either enhance or deface this beauty. Defining what makes something beautiful is a huge endeavor. Philosophers have argued for centuries over the simple question, What is beauty? This is a question that is probably unanswerable. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and based on personal experiences and varies from person to person; it is subjective. We call a variety of things beautiful : a landscape; various nonhuman animals; a young woman; a painting; a symphony. We may even say that an action, such as a gazelle leaping across a field or a well executed sports play, is beautiful. Even if we cannot define exactly what beauty is as a quality in something or a quality within the beholder, everyone somehow believes that some things are beautiful in some way. • 28. The Cell Cycle And Dna Replication Question 1: a) The two processes, with which a cell passes this DNA sequence onto other cells, are DNA replication and mitosis. The cell cycle is inclusive of mitosis and DNA replication, the latter of which occurs in the S phase (synthesis) of the cycle. The goal of the S phase is to create two identical semi conservative chromosomes. The enzyme helicase unwinds the parental DNA double helix strand and uses it as a template so the enzyme DNA polymerase can attach free floating nucleotides to the separate DNA daughter strands using the complementary base pairing rule, in which A T and C G pair together. In this way, the process of DNA replication is deemed semi conservative as one parental strand is always passed on to daughter helix of DNA (Campbell Reece, 2005). Now that the DNA has been replicated, mitosis can occur, which entails the cell (which now contains two strands of identical DNA) undergoing nuclear division that results in the formation of two genetically identical daughter cells (Tortora Grabowski, 2003). Mitosis is a process which consists of five phases in itself; prophase, prometaphase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase/cytokinesis. The duplicated chromosomes are now known as sister chromatids which are attached at a centre point called a centromere. During prophase, these chromatids inside the cell condense and become tightly coiled, and also, a mitotic spindle begins to form. In order to create the illusion of Kane lying on the table as the chestburster broke through his ribs, an artificial chest was built and screwed to the table which John Hurt stood beneath. Prosthetics in the late 70s weren t as good as they are today, so Scott stuffed the fake chest cavity with organs purchased from a local butchers. • 33. A Concrete Human Existence, And The Conditions Of Such... Juan Linares Mr. Maust English IV AP 26 September 2015 Thematic Project Outline Introduction Thesis. Existentialists focus on the question that is a concrete human existence, and the conditions of such existence; they do not dwell on a hypothesis for human essence, instead they stress that this essence is determined by an individual s own life choices. Although humans live in the world, a distance is created in order to add meaning to the disinterested world; however, this meaning is fragile and can be disturbed by tragedy or insight. When this disturbance occurs, and human s precarious lives crumble, the true nature of the world is revealed; a nature that shows little importance for humans; this way of thinking created the, post WWII era, worldwide explosion of ambiguous literature, and the sensory perception of art and music; heavily influenced by the idea of human worthlessness. Literature Existentialism, though it had been present since the 19th century, came of age in the mid 20th Century. This was largely through the scholarly and fictional works of the French existentialists, Jean Paul Sartre, Albert Camus and Simone de Beauvoir. The heavily influenced post WWII movement spurred up a whole new way of thinking. Sartre made the movement popular in that he defined Existentialism and wrote many works solely centered on his views. • 35. The Dumbest Generation The Dumbest Generation A few years ago, I decided to learn sign language. It was not a project for a class, a requirement to graduate, or a fact that everyone knew. I just wanted to learn sign language, so I did what many twenty first century millennials do and downloaded an app. The app showed me diagrams to learn basic phrases, videos to perfect the movements, and lessons to learn more efficiently. The technology of the app made learning sign language easy, and I could use it wherever I went. I thought that I was smart for using technology to learn specific things, but Mark Bauerlein, the author of a 2008 book called The Dumbest Generation, would disagree. According to Bauerlein, twenty first century teenagers possess low knowledge levels when compared to past generations because of the increased use of technology. However, Bauerlein is mistaken. This generation is not the dumbest generation because we focus on different topics, we write more often, and we know that every generation has been called the dumbest . Every generation is different, and the information that is commonly learned in each generation is affected by the events surrounding that time period. As stated in The Dumbest Generation? Don t Be Dumb article written by Sharon Begley, the reason why people cared more about politics in 1966 than now was because politics determined whether or not you were going to get drafted and shipped to Vietnam . Today, teenagers do not care as much about politics because, although it is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 38. Lamentations 1-3 Poem In Lamentations 1 3, The whole metropolis of Judah was destroyed and the people who were not murdered were captured and made slaves in Babylon. The people who survived the destruction of Judah suffered immensely with no rest due to their new lives of hard servitude. This was believed to have happened because rulers or kings had mistreated the children of Israel. It is often necessary to express intense feelings when facing a tragedy, or in order to face a tragedy. Sometimes fears may clearly be recognized as such and confronted openly but other times an outlet is needed in order to release negative emotions, this supports the fact that Lamentations 1 3 and Psalm 137 are both written in the form of poetry (Cook, 44). In extent, to express their fear of imminent doom, the captured people of Judah documented their struggle by writing metaphorically descriptive poetry about ... Motivation, environment, population, and resources seem to be the biggest factors. The War for Independence, for example, was a war where most people could predict the outcome an overwhelming British victory. However, the opposite happened. The people without a powerful government, inexperienced soldiers, and a weak economy won. The British had a decent population and plenty of resources, colonists, however, radiated motivation and fought the war on their own land. The situation was different for the Civil War, though. Determination was shown by the South and the fight was on their land, but the North excelled in population and resources. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
