Facebook’s Non-Compliance with Canadian Privacy Laws
The world of privacy has changed, and Canada s laws need to keep up. Personal information has
been called the oil of the digital economy and as companies drill for more data, the risk to
privacy are growing exponentially. After an investigation conducted in 2009 prompted by a
complaint filed from the Canadian Policy and Public Interest Clinic, the Office of the Privacy
Commissioner has concluded that Facebook s current practices of third party applications do not
comply with Canadian Privacy Laws. The Commissioner s concerns include inadequate disclosure
to users about what is being disclosed, lack of consent, and lack of control over personal
information with third party developers. With these findings, the Commissioner has proposed
several recommendations for Facebook to take on, however the company has refused to comply. In
this paper I will argue that the Office of Privacy Commission requires stronger enforcement powers
in ordering Facebook to change its third party application practices in order to effectively protect
consumers personal information. We live in a regulatory state. The idea of the regulatory state is
that a new institutional and policy style has emerged, in which governments role as regulator
advances while its role as a direct employer or property owner may decline through privatization
Consumers are currently protected under the Personal Information Protection and Electronic
Documents Act dealing with the personal information under the private

Essay on The Airport on Thanksgiving Eve
Thanksgiving holiday is one of the few holidays that we do not have in Thailand. I never
understood the significance of this holiday apart from its two day school break until I traveled
on Thanksgiving eve this past holiday. A taxi driver who drove me to the airport hinted about its
importance by saying that, Tonight is one of the busiest travel periods of the year. I did not
completely comprehend his claim until I saw how crowded the airport was. It seemed to me that
everyone headed home to celebrate Thanksgiving with his or her family. However, what was
most amusing that night was a scene of tens or even hundreds of people waiting for their family
members at arrival gate. I was not clear why there were lots of people so I decided to do... Show

In addition, because of the different constraints between controlled environment in laboratories and
the real world, we cannot use experiments to answer the question. Therefore, ethnography is the
most suitable procedure to answer this question.
To conduct my ethnography, I observed people who waited for their family members at the
airport by sitting near the gate and watching their reactions. Without asking for their opinions or
reasons about their behaviors, I eliminated potential Hawthorne effects which is people changed
their actions once they realized that someone observed them. I paid attention to the number of
people waiting together to determine the relationship between the waiting and arriving people,
their actions while they waited and their reaction once they met their person. According to my
observations, people brought the whole family with them if the person they waited for was part
of a family and they were alone if the arrived person was one s boy/girlfriend. They had similar
emotions such as being tired and bored while they waited. No one had any positive facial
expressions but they refused to sit and wait in the back. Everyone wanted to be the first one to see
the person to whom they waited for. When the long awaited person arrived, their emotions changed
dramatically. Everyone had smiles on their faces and they started to hug

Color And Symbolism In Doctor Zhivago Film
Doctor Zhivago Unlike The Grand Budapest Hotel where the filmmakers are banking on additional
viewings, Doctor Zhivago decides to use color sparingly, but effectively, on the first viewing. By
doing this, the filmmakers of Doctor Zhivago are ensuring that everyone who watches the film
leaves with an understanding of the colorchoices; one doesn t have to watch the filmmultiple times
to get it . The goal of Doctor Zhivago was to illustrate that eternal love and hope amidst war and
strife is possible which is reinforced by connecting war with neutral colors. However, even
amongst saddening times, perseverance will bring about moments of color and positivity. In
addition, color can also symbolize one s emotions in regard to the eruption of... Show more content

Even though Yuri s surroundings are usually neutral, the filmmakers demonstrate Design as
Punctuation in regards to Lara because her surroundings always have one patch of high contrast
area, mostly flowers, standing out amongst the drab and the gray (Srivastava, p. 10). In the same
way how the yellow stands out visually, the audience is able to make the connection that Lara
stands out to Yuri despite the chaos in Moscow. As Yuri looks at the field of daffodils, he
himself is reminded of Lara and smiles. The shot then slowly fades out from the daffodils and
transitions onto Lara s face. The color yellow symbolizes the pulsation of life that has figured
throughout the story which ties into how Zhivago means life (The Art of Film, p. 72 73). In such
a war torn setting, these little daffodils symbolize love, hope, and life among the neutrals and the
chaos. The film successfully communicates the importance of perseverance through the color
yellow by slowly slowly sprinkling it throughout the film, allowing yellow to [acquire] emotional
meaning in sequence and in time (The Art of Film, p. 72 73). Even at his grave there are daffodils
which symbolizes how their connection will live on forever. In fact, the entirety of the story is built

Pluto Shits On The Universe
In the poem Pluto Shits on the Universe, the speaker is rebelling against society s set of
mandates, and she is asserting her independence and autonomy. On the first and last line, Asghar
uses the same sentence, Today, I broke your solar system. Oops. My bad. Repeating the first line
at the ending shows that the statement is important; it sets the tone or theme. As I interpreted the
line, I notice that Asghar is being sarcastic about feeling bad for breaking your solar system. Yet,
she doesn t care, she s tired of society s set of rules, just as Pluto doesn t care about ruining the
solar system. Having this repeated at the intro and at the ending is a way for her to make sure that
we understand this rebellious tone. As we continue

Moral Revelation Theme
Moral revelation and redemption seems to be the focus of Flannery O Connor s theme in A Good
Man is Hard to Find, Revelation, and Everything that Rises Must Converge. O Connor s upbringing
stemmed from southern roots with a strong religious foundation from which she seems to center
her short stories. Although she is a master at integrating different themes throughout her stories, her
dark comedic style of writing allows her to question one s ability to live a good, proper Christian
life, without inducing hatred or bigotry. O Connor often questions her characters ethics, morals, and
how aware they are spiritually. She brings to light the sinful lives many live by interjecting a
condemning or judgmental attitude. She does however, infer... Show more content on

view of Christianity. She is critical of those she vies as below her economic status as less than

judged. The girl s name is a symbol O Connor uses as a symbol of good as opposed to the bad
ethics Mrs. Turpin displays. The physical eye contact and focus Mary Grace had on Mrs. Turpin
was a symbol of Mary Grace helping Mrs. Turpin reach redemption. Again, as in the other two

Dr Jekyll And Hyde In The Strange Case Of Dr. Jekyll And...
Every human being consists of qualities that form to either their good or bad side. No one is
purely good or evil. To try to fit in society, people are willing to do whatever it takes to hide any
characteristics that might fall short of the social norm. In Robert Louis Stevenson s novella, The
Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the characters demonstrate how every human being
consists of both qualities and how people suppress the qualities that are undesired by society in
order to fit in. However, after a while people can no longer stand to hide part of who they are which
leads people to substance use to take away their conscience in order to show their dark side.

People would rather be miserable and pretend to be someone else, than risk judged for who they
really are. In the novella, Stevenson uses Dr. Jekyll s experiment to show how far people are
willing to go to be freed from judgment of society. Dr. Jekyll conducted an experiment that split
his personality into two people, the good and evil side of him. Dr. Jekyll knew he was risking
his life before he started but he thought it would be worth it to get to be the other side of him for
once. I hesitated long before I put this theory to the test of practice. I knew well that I risked
death. (57) Dr. Jekyll was willing to risk everything to experience his other side. When Dr. Jekyll
drank his chemical solution, he transformed into Mr. Hyde. Mr. Hyde was completely free to be
evil without his conscience telling him it was wrong. No one really knew who Mr. Hyde was
so he had no reason to fear judgment from others. He was completely free to act as himself. This
relates to the real world in that people use drugs and alcohol to transform into their dark side.
When using drugs or drinking alcohol, your body loses all control over your consciousness. The
substances are more powerful and led people to do things they would normally not even think they
are capable of and might regret when experiencing withdrawal of the

The Impact Of Humanism In The Renaissance
During the Renaissance, a program of study known as humanism, impacted education, art, politics,
and ultimately shaped the Italian Renaissance. Humanism is defined as a program of study
designed by Italians that emphasized the critical study of Latin and Greek literature with the goal of
understanding human nature. [1] Humanism changed people s views and allowed them to start
portraying people in a more realistic and relatable way. Many artists began to drift away from
religious subjects and instead, began to focus more on individuals and their lives. In addition,
humanism also allowed people to create new architecture that resembled classical constructions.
Humanism impacted many visual arts, which include Leonardo da Vincis Mona Lisa, Michelangelo
s David, and Filippo Brunelleschi s Dome. The Mona Lisa was painted between 1503 and 1506
by Leonardo da Vinci, and is one of the most famous paintings in the world today. The painting is
a portrait of Lisa Gherardini, and was painted for her husband, Francesco del Giocondo.
Humanism has impacted this portrait in various ways. Lisa s smile has been described to be so
enigmatic [1] that people are still trying to interpret the feelings behind her smile. The painting is
greatly impacted by humanism as it focuses on realism and relatability, allowing Lisa to be
portrayed as an everyday woman with the same flaws and impurities as anyone else. This differs
from the Middle Agesas all people used to be portrayed in such as

Alopecia Areata
My daughter was a year and a half when she was diagnosed with Alopecia areata. Alopecia areata is
considered an autoimmune disease, in which the immune system, which is designed to protect the
body from foreign invaders such as viruses and bacteria, mistakenly attacks the hair follicles, the
structures from which hairs grow. This can lead to hair loss on the scalp and elsewhere (https:/

threatening disease but it is a traumatic disease.

With reference to specific examples, critically discuss the contention that cities are becoming

Polarisation is a term that usually refers to extreme of two extreme situations . In this context,
social polarisation is examined in detail. Social polarisation is an expression associated with the
segregation within a society that may emerge from income inequality, real estate fluctuations,
economic displacements etc. and result in such differentiation that would consist of various social
groups, from high income to low income (Moulaert, F. et al. (2003)). This essay will outline the two

In addition, there was a decline in middle income, blue collar jobs of the manufacturing sector. It
can be argued that however, the growth of employment in the clerks and service workers and shop
and market sales workers (see table 1) contradicts the theory. This occupational group mainly
consists of middle income occupation and their growth made up for the loss of those in the middle
income manufacturing sector. It can be concluded that although Cape Town has seen a marginally
polarizing employment growth (Borel Saladin, Crankshaw, 2009; 658) in the past twenty years, it
has not seen an absolute decline in middle income employment and therefore does not agree with
the social polarizing thesis.

Sydney, Australia is the second case study this essay will discuss, many of the scholars who
analysed the social polarization thesis only looked at cities within the US or Europe, although
helpful it can limit empirical discussion (Baum, 1997; 1882). Therefore looking at a global city out
of this zone that also has strong economic links with Hong Kong and Singapore will allow the
reader to understand the contention of polarisation in the contemporary world. It can be argued that

The Man I Killed by Tim O Brien
In modern war... you will die like a dog for no good reason. Ernest Hemingway. War is many
things. It may be many different things depending on each individual. Many soldiers get trained so
their mentality is to characterize their opponents as less than human, so their lives lose all worth.
Some soldiers however, are not prepared for this, even though they have been trained. One thing is
training for it, another thing is actually killing a humanbeing. As they killmore people, it becomes
normalized for them. All they have seen changes their mind, while all of their dreams get swept
aside by bloody hands of the hypnotized while they carry the cross of homicide. But why kill
other strangers? What s in it for the soldiers? War feeds the rich while it buries the poor. Rich
people are power hungry, selling soldiers in human grocery store, using them as their little puppets
who obey their master, making them go around killing each other in order to determine who is
right, but in the end, war determines who is left. The Man I Killed by Tim O Brien shows how
soldiers who commit violence become traumatized and how that changes over time.
At the beginning of the story the narrator, Tim, gets affected by committing an act of violence
when he was in the Vietnam War, killing an enemy Vietnamese soldier. Many thoughts began
flowing in his head, all the time thinking about the man he killed. He had been born, maybe, in

when Abraham is born. Continue with Genesis 11:31, by the Priestly and Redactor sources,
Terah takes Abraham, Sarah and Lot along with all of their household to Haran to live. Taken

Rhetorical Analysis Of Red Rock Canyon
In the city of Las Vegas, people go through the daily trails and tribulations that the city has to

provides. Red Rock Canyon serves as an example of space and place in rhetoricand also creates ties
to visual rhetoric with the unique scenery and imagery being offered. In addition aspects of
memory such as cultural memory and public memory can be connected to Red Rock. To begin
this analysis of Red Rock Canyon, is the notion of Red Rock Canyon being a place defined by
its theory of rhetoric. According to Danielle Enders and Samantha Senda Cook in their article
Rhetoric Matters: The Rhetoric of Place in Protest , Place refers to particular locations (e.g., a
city, a particular shopping mall, or a park) that are semi bounded, a combination of material and
symbolic qualities, and embodied. For example a city is semi bounded by city limits (semi
bounded because these limits can be a matter of debate, change over time, or be re drawn within
a single year), includes material structures like buildings and roads, has symbolic meanings such
as being perceived as a college town or an urban metropolis, and is experienced on a daily basis by
the people who live, work, or visit it ( Enders, Cook Pg.259, 2011). Red Rock Canyon itself is a

Potassium Compliance Report
Precautions used during administration of potassium contain solution to prevent injury or death
Potassium regulation in the body is impetrative to our body s homeostasis. Small fluctuations in
the normal potassium blood levels can be dangerous. Should an individual require potassium
therapy client safety is the priority. As always the five rights of medication should be closely
followed when administering medications. (Ignatavicius, 2013, pg. 185) Potassium is available in
various concentrations and can be caustic, as a result it should never be given subcutaneous or IM
injection. As mandated by The Joint Commission concentrated potassium should be diluted and
added to IV solutions in the pharmacy by registered pharmacist and concentrated vials of
potassium cannot be in patient care areas (Ignatavicius, 2013, pg. 185). The ratio of potassium
dilution has very specific perimeters also. IV administration of should not exceed 1mEq of
potassium to10mL of solution. When giving larger dose a programed infusion device is
recommended to ensure the infusion rate of 5 to 10 mEq/hr while never increasing the above 20
mEq/hr. (Ignatavicius, 2013, pg. 185). Prior to infusion the nurse checked and rechecked again

The respiratory system uses breathing to compensate for these changes. The changes in CO2 affect
receptors in the respiratory area of the brain. As the CO2 levels continue to raise the central

the amount CO2 exhaled. In turn, lowering the build up of CO2 in the lungs and in the ECF. As

Near the archaeological site of Kouyunjik in ancient Nineveh, the capital of Assyria, now modern

Mesopotamia by an English archaeologist named Austen Henry Layard. The Royal Library of
Ashurbanipal, named after the last great king of the Assyrian Empire (668 627 BC), contained a

Palace of King Sennacherub. Another set was found in the same mound three years later yielding

William Wordsworth s Poem Of The Bird And Its Song With...
William Wordsworth, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and John Clare were influential romantic poets who
sought to learn about themselves and their art by immersing themselves as nature and utilizing
different animals as their muses. These three poets each observed skylarks in their natural habitat
and sought to decipher the meaning behind their songs. From these experiences, each wrote a poem
which described their perspectives. Wordsworth, Shelly, and Clare s Skylarkpoems are arguably
written in dialogue with each other. While Wordsworth and Shelly look upon the bird and its song
with adoration, both seeking to learn from the animal, Clare possesses a much darker conception
of the skylark s song, and instead attempts to reprimand and teach the bird. Their observations and
the opinions of the lark are dictated by the season in which they find themselves listening to the
bird s song. Wordsworth and Shelly are envious of the Skylark s freedom to travel wherever it may
please, which partially dictates their infatuation with the creature. Wordsworth declares to the
Skylark:
Though hast a nest, for thy love and thy rest: And, though little troubled with sloth, Drunken Lark!
thou would st be loth To be such a Traveller as I. Happy, happy Liver! (ll. 18 22)
When examining the bird in its natural habitat, Wordsworth acknowledges that it has a home for a
family and for relaxation, and yet can still fly whenever and wherever it may please. While he lives

The Relationship Between Internal Communication and...
Introduction
It is clear that internal communication is an essential practice for organisational success. However,
what does this statement actually mean? In this essay, I hope to break down both concepts of
internal communication and successful organisations and then conduct an in depth analysis on the
relationship between internal communication and successful organisations.
What is internal communication?
Literature Reivew
According to Bruce Berger, Internal communication represents the communication and the
interactions among the members of an organization, being defined as a way of describing and
explaining a corporation. Internal communication targets the internal members of an organization,
including the superiors, the collaborators and the subordinates. (Kovacs Reka and Anca Borza,
2012, 613 630)
This means that internal communications is crucial for creating unity and harmony within an
organisation. Through internal communication, employees of an organisation can exchange
information, establish relationships, form systems of values, create an organisational culture,
harmonize activities, establish collaboration for the achievement of goals and develop formal and
informal networks. (Kovacs Reka and Anca Borza, 2012, 613 630) Another way to look at internal
communications would be to define it as a strategic organisational communications and they differ
from one organisation to another.
Internal communications happens constantly within organizations and is

Inversion Persuasive Essay
Some people may think the idea of being inverted upside down doesn t fall under the category of
fun. While it might take some getting used to, the benefits of suspending your body in an inverted
position are tremendous.
The idea has been around a lot longer than you might think. Inverting the human body has long
been a practiced art of both medicine and therapy. Today, using a unique type of inversion swing, it
s found its way into the ancient practice of yoga.
Inversion Therapy
The practice of inversion has been around for centuries. There are descriptive pictorial drawings of
the concept, which date back to 3,000 B.C. Inversion therapy is used all over the world by medical
professionals, physical therapist and athletic trainers.

develop core strength and stability. Fitness enthusiasts are always looking for inventive ways to

В·Back Pain
One of the most frequently reported benefits of different types of inversion therapy is the reduction
in back pain. Chiropractors use different types of inversion equipment to reduce compression
problems between the vertebrae. The spinal cord is the single most important part of the active
body, so the benefits garnered from using an inversion swing can be dramatic.
Unlike standard inversion boards, or gravity boots that suspend you upside down by your ankles,
an inversion swing allows you to move. This is an excellent tool to help with back issues because
it removes the forces of gravity.
As you invert your body, the compression between your vertebrae is eliminated. It allows you to
improve your posture and work on increasing flexibility if you suffer from a chronic stiff back.
Regular use of an inversion swing for back problems reduces pain as it helps develop a better

Social Disengagement Theory Analysis
The theory of geotranscendence was developed in 1994 by Swedish sociologist Lars Tornstam.
The concept is a positive one, used to refer to the individual in the process of becoming more
mature. It views aging in direct correlation with a growing sense of independence and the
acknowledgment of personal desires. Here, the act of disengaging is entirely voluntary, and results
in greater opportunity for social interaction outside of the family unit. In comparison, Elaine
Cumming s disengagement theory suggests that it accompanies old age. She wrote that it is both
normal and inevitable for people to decrease their activity and seek more passive roles as they age.
(Hillier Barrow, 2015, p. 82). So, in this case, disengagement is a two way operation.... Show more

The former is in reference to a social rule that requires that we return a favor with a favor,
obvious by the prefix of the word itself. The norm of beneficence holds that we act out of loyalty
to the benefit of the recipient, with no expectation for exchange. Picture a parent(s) who takes
there child back in after he or she chose moved out as an act of rebellion. In this case, it may not
be that they want to bail their child out, but because they see it as their role as a parent. Lastly,
there is a kind of relationship that provides a mutual benefit to all those involved known as the
norm of equity. This is something we refer to in science as mutualism, and is an excellent example
of what is being described here. Now, focusing on the idea of a role , introduced in my second
example, Hillier Barrow (2015) define it as a status or position which carries out attributes. And,
as we grow older, our roles change; as mothers, we become grandmothers, and so on across
generations. In effect, so too are our responsibilities altered, becoming less and less over the course

In the earlier years, poliomyelitis or polio was a crippling and deadly disease that claimed the
lives of millions of people or paralyzed its victims. The epidemic took the lives of more than 2.5
billion children prior to the vaccination discovery ( History of Polio, YEAR). It was due to
animal experimentations that Dr. Jonas Salk discovered a vaccination to combat the deadly
disease. Salk and his team developed a method to produce large amounts of vaccine by cultivating
the polioviruses in the kidney tissues of monkeys ( Polio Cases, Deaths..., 2017). However, what
few people know is that it was also due to animal testing that the polio vaccine was delayed.
According to David Wiebers, a neuroscientist, and his colleagues at the Mayo Clinic, they revealed
that the studies on the monkeys also led to gross misconceptions delaying the fight against polio.
(CITE) The experiments conducted originally indicated that the polio virus infects mainly through
the nervous system halting the search for a cure. The erroneous conclusion contradicted the human
studies which demonstrated that the polioviruses primary route of infection was through the

Romanticism In Walt Mann s Song Of Myself, By Thomas Mann
While, in Death in Venice, Thomas Mann s use of a third person limited point of view, enigmatic
figures, and ironic and analytical tone dismantles the romantic answer to realism, Walt Whitman
eludes Mann s critiques in his work Song of Myself through the use of first person speaker,
everyday objects as symbols and free verse. Mann s dissolving of romanticism, carved a pathway
for Whitman to craft a utopian view where principles such as democracy and importance in
individual identity emerge as possible answers.
The point of view of both works vary from 3rd person in Death in Venice to a 1st person in Song
of Myself. This distinction in viewpoints allows for each author to express his idea in the best way
possible. Early in Death in Venice, when Aschenbach encounters the traveler, Mann displays the
power of using third person limited narrator. It is entirely possible that Aschenbach had been
somewhat indiscreet in his half distracted, half inquisitive survey of the stranger, for he suddenly
realized that his gaze was being returned, and indeed returned so belligerently, so directly eye to
eye with such clear intent to bring matters to a head and force the other to avert his eyes, that
Aschenbach, with an awkward sense of embarrassment, turned away and began to walk along the
fence (1082). Mann s use of such particular detail of movement and feelings for a simple matter of
making eye contact allows the reader to connect with Aschenbach s own experiences. The feeling of

I Am A Master Of My Own Destiny, By The United States Of...
In the United States of America, there are over 300 million people. Each one of these people
have heard messages that tell them that they are in control. Whether it s their own lives or those
around them; Americans are bred with the idea that complete control is possible. This idea is
not a new concept for Americans. In fact, Americans have had overinflated ideas about control
since we decided that it was necessary for us to control the rest of the nation via Manifest
Destiny. The reason that I choose to focus on Americanized control as my final narrative is
because it is something that I ve grown familiar with in my life. It s always the same kinds of
people buying into it and being lead astray to the troubles that come with having such a strong
desire for control. In fact, I was once a believer in that ideology. I once thoughtthat I was the master
of my own destiny, but I was wrong. As I got older and time went on, every single thing that I m
writing now is everything that I ve seen in others. In other words, knowing that a person has no
control over their life is something that I understand intensely. I understand it so well that I can
breakdown some aspects of the type of control that affect Americans like me. These characteristics
of control are: the punishment of those who seemingly lack control, that planning is a placebo and
therefore does nothing, and working hard amounts to nothing.
Control is sold to people on the idea that it s achievable by all and only

The Pros And Cons Of Playing Deer Hunter
Alright so maybe this is a cruel topic but let s face it, the bear hunters that particpated in New
Jersey probably had more fun than anybody playing Deer Hunter 2014. New Jersey s open season
on bears has opened and the citizens over there sure got a lot of them. This, no doubt, led to many
protesters against it. Maybe they should go play DeerHunter and see if the real thing would be more
fun!
BEAR HUNTERS GO WILD IN NEW JERSEY
There were a total of 216 bears that were killed on opening day of bear season. This number
nearly doubled the amount of last year which was only 120. This means that the week long season
will probably last years amount of 272 bears. Although there were protesters, a member of the

Jane Addams and the Successful Hull House Essay
Jane Addams and her colleague, Ellen Gates Starr, founded the most successful settlement house in
the United States otherwise known as the Hull House ( Settlement 1). It was located in a city
overrun by poverty, filth and gangsters, and it could not have come at a better time (Lundblad 663).
The main purpose of settlement houses was to ease the transition into the American culture and
labor force, and The Hull House offered its residents an opportunity to help the community, was a
safe haven for the city, and led the way through social reform for women and children.
Laura Jane Addams was born in Cedarville, Illinois on September 6, 1860. Addams lost her mother
to childbirth at the age of two, and her father, John Addams, was a prominent ... Show more content

At first, Addams and Starr were only offering readings and painting slides, but the Hull House
took a turn when they realized the need for a safe child environment. A kindergarten was added
to the house with 24 enrolled children and 70 on the waiting list, and a day nursery followed
soon after. But the Hull House was not only for mothers and children. Starr offered sewing and
cooking lessons for girls, while Addams ran a boy s club. Lectures and classes on a wide range of
subjects including English, citizenship and art were offered for free by social reformers, students
and university teachers like Susan B. Anthony and Frank Lloyd Wright ( Hull House1).Soon after,
Addams and Starr were joined by Julia Lathrop, a college friend and lawyer, and Florence
Kelley, a member of the Socialist Labor Party. It was because of Kelley that the Hull House
became a center for social reform. She, along with Alzina Stevens and Mary Kenney, spear headed
the research of the sweating trade in Chicago which lead to the passing of the Illinois Factory Act
of 1893. As a result, Kelley, Stevens and Kenney were recruited by Senator John Altgeld as
factory inspectors. Other working class women interested in social reform also educated the
middle class of the Hull House ( Hull House 1). By 1907, the Hull House had expanded to include
12 additional buildings, a gymnasium, a boarding school for

Essay about Health and Social Care a-Level Unit 7 M2 and D1
M2 Use different sociological perspectives to discuss patterns and trends of health and illness in
TWO different social groups.
I m going to write about two different social groups, Gender and Social Class because Feminism
fits in to gender and Marxism fits into Social Class.
D1 Evaluate different sociological explanations for patterns and trends of health and illness in two
different social groups.
Social Class Marxism.
M2: This table shows that people who live in most deprived areas are more likely to smoke, are
less likely to have a good education, they more than likely lived in poverty as a child. This table
also shows that the least deprived people are the people with the most education and then end up
becoming a professional ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Feminists would not agree with this graph because they believe men live longer than men,
women would suggest that women are being more deprived as they are seen as the more
emotional gender and also that they are being disadvantaged because they believe that they are
ruled by the men. They believe that men get the higher jobs than women for example, men can
be builders, coal miner s etc. men are seen to have more physical hard labour jobs compared to
women because women are seen to be house wives and have less hard laboured jobs for
example, cooking, cleaning and childcare. If a man and a woman both applied to be a head
teacher its more than likely that the man would get the job because of the fact women have
children and would maternity leave which is having time off work. Although one of the reasons
why women tend to live longer is because they are seen to be more health conscious for
example, if they even have a small sign of illness they tend to go to the doctors to get medication
or help to cure the illness whereas when it comes to men, they don t seek help until the illness or
disease gets really bad even when it s almost too late to cure.
D1: Feminists actually contradict their selves by saying men live longer than themselves and also
that men rule over women making them the deprived gender although women actually live longer
than men due to the facts I went through in M2. In feminism, they don t

  • 2. Facebook’s Non-Compliance with Canadian Privacy Laws The world of privacy has changed, and Canada s laws need to keep up. Personal information has been called the oil of the digital economy and as companies drill for more data, the risk to privacy are growing exponentially. After an investigation conducted in 2009 prompted by a complaint filed from the Canadian Policy and Public Interest Clinic, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner has concluded that Facebook s current practices of third party applications do not comply with Canadian Privacy Laws. The Commissioner s concerns include inadequate disclosure to users about what is being disclosed, lack of consent, and lack of control over personal information with third party developers. With these findings, the Commissioner has proposed several recommendations for Facebook to take on, however the company has refused to comply. In this paper I will argue that the Office of Privacy Commission requires stronger enforcement powers in ordering Facebook to change its third party application practices in order to effectively protect consumers personal information. We live in a regulatory state. The idea of the regulatory state is that a new institutional and policy style has emerged, in which governments role as regulator advances while its role as a direct employer or property owner may decline through privatization Consumers are currently protected under the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act dealing with the personal information under the private ... I never understood the significance of this holiday apart from its two day school break until I traveled on Thanksgiving eve this past holiday. A taxi driver who drove me to the airport hinted about its importance by saying that, Tonight is one of the busiest travel periods of the year. I did not completely comprehend his claim until I saw how crowded the airport was. It seemed to me that everyone headed home to celebrate Thanksgiving with his or her family. Without asking for their opinions or reasons about their behaviors, I eliminated potential Hawthorne effects which is people changed their actions once they realized that someone observed them. I paid attention to the number of people waiting together to determine the relationship between the waiting and arriving people, their actions while they waited and their reaction once they met their person. According to my observations, people brought the whole family with them if the person they waited for was part of a family and they were alone if the arrived person was one s boy/girlfriend. They had similar emotions such as being tired and bored while they waited. No one had any positive facial expressions but they refused to sit and wait in the back. Color And Symbolism In Doctor Zhivago Film Doctor Zhivago Unlike The Grand Budapest Hotel where the filmmakers are banking on additional viewings, Doctor Zhivago decides to use color sparingly, but effectively, on the first viewing. By doing this, the filmmakers of Doctor Zhivago are ensuring that everyone who watches the film leaves with an understanding of the colorchoices; one doesn t have to watch the filmmultiple times to get it . The goal of Doctor Zhivago was to illustrate that eternal love and hope amidst war and strife is possible which is reinforced by connecting war with neutral colors. In Robert Louis Stevenson s novella, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the characters demonstrate how every human being consists of both qualities and how people suppress the qualities that are undesired by society in order to fit in. People would rather be miserable and pretend to be someone else, than risk judged for who they really are. In the novella, Stevenson uses Dr. Jekyll s experiment to show how far people are willing to go to be freed from judgment of society. Dr. Jekyll conducted an experiment that split his personality into two people, the good and evil side of him. Dr. Jekyll knew he was risking his life before he started but he thought it would be worth it to get to be the other side of him for once. I hesitated long before I put this theory to the test of practice. I knew well that I risked death. (57) Dr. Jekyll was willing to risk everything to experience his other side. Humanism is defined as a program of study designed by Italians that emphasized the critical study of Latin and Greek literature with the goal of understanding human nature. [1] Humanism changed people s views and allowed them to start portraying people in a more realistic and relatable way. Many artists began to drift away from religious subjects and instead, began to focus more on individuals and their lives. In addition, humanism also allowed people to create new architecture that resembled classical constructions. Humanism impacted many visual arts, which include Leonardo da Vincis Mona Lisa, Michelangelo s David, and Filippo Brunelleschi s Dome. The Mona Lisa was painted between 1503 and 1506 by Leonardo da Vinci, and is one of the most famous paintings in the world today. The painting is a portrait of Lisa Gherardini, and was painted for her husband, Francesco del Giocondo. Humanism has impacted this portrait in various ways. Lisa s smile has been described to be so enigmatic [1] that people are still trying to interpret the feelings behind her smile. It can be concluded that although Cape Town has seen a marginally polarizing employment growth (Borel Saladin, Crankshaw, 2009; 658) in the past twenty years, it has not seen an absolute decline in middle income employment and therefore does not agree with the social polarizing thesis. • 18. The Man I Killed by Tim O Brien In modern war... you will die like a dog for no good reason. Ernest Hemingway. War is many things. It may be many different things depending on each individual. Many soldiers get trained so their mentality is to characterize their opponents as less than human, so their lives lose all worth. Some soldiers however, are not prepared for this, even though they have been trained. One thing is training for it, another thing is actually killing a humanbeing. As they killmore people, it becomes normalized for them. All they have seen changes their mind, while all of their dreams get swept aside by bloody hands of the hypnotized while they carry the cross of homicide. But why kill other strangers? What s in it for the soldiers? War feeds the rich while it buries the poor. Rich people are power hungry, selling soldiers in human grocery store, using them as their little puppets who obey their master, making them go around killing each other in order to determine who is right, but in the end, war determines who is left. The Man I Killed by Tim O Brien shows how soldiers who commit violence become traumatized and how that changes over time. At the beginning of the story the narrator, Tim, gets affected by committing an act of violence when he was in the Vietnam War, killing an enemy Vietnamese soldier. Many thoughts began flowing in his head, all the time thinking about the man he killed. He had been born, maybe, in 1946 in the village of My Khe near the central coastline of ... People constantly on the go, worried about the collection of money, pollution filling our lungs and tackled with the constant worries of reality. Being in the city, it seems as there is no escape from the madness that is being offered. Surrounded by the man made building and artificial light that illuminates the struggle of these streets. Although, there is a place that offers freedom about fifteen minutes away from the cities madness. A place where the air is fresh, a place where gargantuan rocks act as buildings, a place where the sun, moon and stars are the source of light and a place that provides freedom from the worries of the city. This center of nature providing freedom from the busy city life is Red Rock Canyon. Red Rock Canyon as a space has a rhetorical significance as a location of freedom from city life with the multitude of space it provides. Red Rock Canyon serves as an example of space and place in rhetoricand also creates ties to visual rhetoric with the unique scenery and imagery being offered. In addition aspects of memory such as cultural memory and public memory can be connected to Red Rock. To begin this analysis of Red Rock Canyon, is the notion of Red Rock Canyon being a place defined by its theory of rhetoric. • 27. William Wordsworth s Poem Of The Bird And Its Song With... William Wordsworth, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and John Clare were influential romantic poets who sought to learn about themselves and their art by immersing themselves as nature and utilizing different animals as their muses. These three poets each observed skylarks in their natural habitat and sought to decipher the meaning behind their songs. From these experiences, each wrote a poem which described their perspectives. Wordsworth, Shelly, and Clare s Skylarkpoems are arguably written in dialogue with each other. While Wordsworth and Shelly look upon the bird and its song with adoration, both seeking to learn from the animal, Clare possesses a much darker conception of the skylark s song, and instead attempts to reprimand and teach the bird. Their observations and the opinions of the lark are dictated by the season in which they find themselves listening to the bird s song. Wordsworth and Shelly are envious of the Skylark s freedom to travel wherever it may please, which partially dictates their infatuation with the creature. Wordsworth declares to the Skylark: Though hast a nest, for thy love and thy rest: And, though little troubled with sloth, Drunken Lark! thou would st be loth To be such a Traveller as I. Happy, happy Liver! However, what does this statement actually mean? In this essay, I hope to break down both concepts of internal communication and successful organisations and then conduct an in depth analysis on the relationship between internal communication and successful organisations. What is internal communication? Literature Reivew According to Bruce Berger, Internal communication represents the communication and the interactions among the members of an organization, being defined as a way of describing and explaining a corporation. Internal communication targets the internal members of an organization, including the superiors, the collaborators and the subordinates. (Kovacs Reka and Anca Borza, 2012, 613 630) This means that internal communications is crucial for creating unity and harmony within an organisation. Through internal communication, employees of an organisation can exchange information, establish relationships, form systems of values, create an organisational culture, harmonize activities, establish collaboration for the achievement of goals and develop formal and informal networks. (Kovacs Reka and Anca Borza, 2012, 613 630) Another way to look at internal communications would be to define it as a strategic organisational communications and they differ from one organisation to another. • 31. Social Disengagement Theory Analysis The theory of geotranscendence was developed in 1994 by Swedish sociologist Lars Tornstam. The concept is a positive one, used to refer to the individual in the process of becoming more mature. It views aging in direct correlation with a growing sense of independence and the acknowledgment of personal desires. Here, the act of disengaging is entirely voluntary, and results in greater opportunity for social interaction outside of the family unit. In comparison, Elaine Cumming s disengagement theory suggests that it accompanies old age. She wrote that it is both normal and inevitable for people to decrease their activity and seek more passive roles as they age. (Hillier Barrow, 2015, p. 82). So, in this case, disengagement is a two way operation.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is something we refer to in science as mutualism, and is an excellent example of what is being described here. • 39. Romanticism In Walt Mann s Song Of Myself, By Thomas Mann While, in Death in Venice, Thomas Mann s use of a third person limited point of view, enigmatic figures, and ironic and analytical tone dismantles the romantic answer to realism, Walt Whitman eludes Mann s critiques in his work Song of Myself through the use of first person speaker, everyday objects as symbols and free verse. Mann s dissolving of romanticism, carved a pathway for Whitman to craft a utopian view where principles such as democracy and importance in individual identity emerge as possible answers. The point of view of both works vary from 3rd person in Death in Venice to a 1st person in Song of Myself. This distinction in viewpoints allows for each author to express his idea in the best way possible. Early in Death in Venice, when Aschenbach encounters the traveler, Mann displays the power of using third person limited narrator. It is entirely possible that Aschenbach had been somewhat indiscreet in his half distracted, half inquisitive survey of the stranger, for he suddenly realized that his gaze was being returned, and indeed returned so belligerently, so directly eye to eye with such clear intent to bring matters to a head and force the other to avert his eyes, that Aschenbach, with an awkward sense of embarrassment, turned away and began to walk along the fence (1082). Whether it s their own lives or those around them; Americans are bred with the idea that complete control is possible. This idea is not a new concept for Americans. In fact, Americans have had overinflated ideas about control since we decided that it was necessary for us to control the rest of the nation via Manifest Destiny. The reason that I choose to focus on Americanized control as my final narrative is because it is something that I ve grown familiar with in my life. It s always the same kinds of people buying into it and being lead astray to the troubles that come with having such a strong desire for control. In fact, I was once a believer in that ideology. I once thoughtthat I was the master of my own destiny, but I was wrong. As I got older and time went on, every single thing that I m writing now is everything that I ve seen in others. In other words, knowing that a person has no control over their life is something that I understand intensely. I understand it so well that I can breakdown some aspects of the type of control that affect Americans like me.
