Presentation by John Yesko at the 2011 Information Architecture Summit (IA Summit) entitled: "The User Experience Brief: The What and Why Before the How."
We IAs spend a lot of time discussing the “core” documents in information architecture—wireframes, site maps, prototypes. But we often jump into these very tactical, design-oriented deliverables too hastily.
The user experience brief takes on a more strategic role. Early in the project, it’s our vehicle to summarize what we know so far, particularly requirements and research results. More importantly though, it lays the foundation for the UX design approach, with the goals of gathering consensus and identifying sticking points early on. The user experience brief illuminates the organizing principles—user experience fundamentals to be followed and referenced throughout the project.
We’ll talk about the value of this early-project document, its role in shaping the user experience approach, how its composed, and its limitations. We’ll look at a number of great visual examples too. Introduced the right way and at the right time, the UX brief can be an invaluable stake in the ground with clients and internal stakeholders.

Product Roadmapping 101: Where Do I Start?connielharper
A session at devLink 2010 in Nashville, TN, this presentation will review the types of roadmaps and how to create them to show where you're software product is going. Includes building a fictional roadmap example.
Creating a delightful user experience (UX) is becoming an increasingly important success factor for many digital products, and Scrum is the most popular agile method to build software products. But integrating the UX work with Scrum can be tricky: Scrum provides no guidance on which UX artefacts should be used, when they are created, who creates them and how they fit into the product backlog. This slide deck helps you understand how you can successfully combine UX and Scrum to create software products with a great user experience.

Handling Non Functional Requirements on an Agile ProjectKen Howard
When adjectives and adverbs appear in User Stories, they can be easily overlooked and seen as simple adornments to the story. There are a couple schools of thought on how to handle non-functional requirements on Agile projects. Mike Cohn recommends writing a User Story for each non-functional requirement, while others recommend creating task cards to drive out specification using Thomas Gilb’s approach. In this session, examples of various techniques for handling non-functional requirements will be demonstrated, with a discussion of pros and cons of each technique.
My presentation focusing on building your best design team, and providing a framework for framing your team. As prepared exclusively for the Leading Design Conference in London.
Goal based priorization, by Alexandre Klaser and Lourenço SoaresThoughtworks
The adoption of agile methodologies doesn't come without its pitfalls. Two of them can be the uncontrolled growth of the backlog and the lack of capacity to determine how much effort is necessary for a certain feature to attain its business goals. To escape from these traps and change the focus from isolated work items to business goals to be attained, we propose the use of a technique called Goal-Based Prioritization.
Using Kano Analysis to prioritise Business Requirements
Noriaki Kano, recipient of the Deming Prize, developed a model to work out what stakeholder requirements are mandatory, which ones are value for money proposition (i.e. more is better,) and which requirements will delight them. This talk introduces the Kano model in the business/software requirements context, and presents a step by step application of the model so that you can delight your stakeholders.

How many features in a software is actually being used? Are we investing on features which our users love to have? What drives adoption? What kills it? Let's take look at a more scientific approach than just assumptions, to validate the feature ideas before investing on them. In the end let's do a small exercise to start using this approach.
Managing employee performance in a manufacturing environmentHNI Risk Services
The key factor in successfully meeting any company goal lies in each of your employee's individual behavior. Whether you’re trying to maximize productivity, improve quality, lower health care costs, or manage work comp spend, you must develop a system that addresses each of your employees individually and inspires them to change their mode of operation.
At this HNI University webinar, we discussed techniques for managing performance and changing behaviors in a manufacturing setting. We’ll start with how to identify what behaviors need to change and how to structure incentives, and we'll share examples of programs that have worked or fallen short — and why.
TOPICS COVERED
-Tools to uncover unwanted and wanted behaviors
-Individual vs. group rewards: what’s most effective and when
-Why some incentive programs fail
-Ways to help employees "own" their risk and behaviors
-Unique challenges faced in a manufacturing setting

Shaping Designers and Design Teams: IxDA Berlin 10th Anniversary additionJason Mesut
A first outing of a talk that covers some of the work that I am doing around the world to help people profile themselves and their teams to better reflect, focus development, hire the right people and retain them better.
Growing your UX Career through community interactionsJason Mesut
A talk I gave at the first UX Crunch for Junior UX practitioners. How you can grow your career through meetups, mapping, meetings, mentors and mastering modes. It was put together in a few hours as I was a last minute replacement. Hopefully i'll revisit at some point.
Resonance - When Interaction Design meets Music TechJason Mesut
In this presentation Jason connects the world of music technology to professional design practice. He shares some of his inspiration from midi controllers to hard and soft synths. He explores how academia, music technology and the design world can learn from each other. Then he shares some potential trajectories, opportunities and challenges for the future.
If you like interaction design, musical instruments and classic synths, you will love this.
---------------------------
Jason studied Industrial Design at Brunel University. Since then, his 17 year career in User Experience led him to running regular community events as a local leader for the Interaction Design Association (IxDA) and founding the design and innovation consultancy, Resonant, where he works on physical-digital products and services. When he was younger, he started making music on the Commodore 64, and then on the Amiga with OctaMed. Jason has substituted his lack of musical training with ongoing investments in music technology. He justifies this by connecting his personal passion of music technology with his professional career.
Reflecting on over 20 years of designing around mobile technology, products and services, Jason descibes some of the lessons he has learned along the way. He then uses these as a basis to help identify how these might help us identify new opportunities and tackle key challenges as we cerate new mobile solutions.
The world of design is getting ever more complex. There are an increasing number of different specialists to involve in conceiving new products and services. With each specialism comes more potential challenges for working together. How do we continually evolve our abilities to collaborate?
Jason Mesut explores some of his own experience in different design roles, as an event organiser, as a father, as a leader and as a a manager to offer a frameowrk for collaboration based on 3 key engagement strategies, 6 key behavioral principles, and 6 key skills to practice to help you on your voyage to master the craft of collaboration.
A challenging review of the future of user interfaces, and a plea to better focus and shun the shiny:
– triangulate through experts
– observe emergent behaviour
– and track a range of trends.
Get out the echochamber and avoid the human centipede of digital rhetoric. Listen harder with your eyes and critique better with your mind.
Bridging the Physical-Digital Divide: Industrial Designer EditionJason Mesut
With the proliferation of touchscreens and a hardware revival driven by internet technologists, Industrial Design is at risk of becoming irrelevant.
How can Industrial Design engage with the technology, user experience and software communities to help create harmony across physical products and digital services?
From research with 30+ Industrial Designers, User Experience designers and technologists, I concluded that the divide can be broken down across a series of axes and bridged by connecting, calibrating and collaborating.
A cut-down Industrial Designer oriented version of a longer 45 minute presentation for Interactions 14.
Creating the Perfect User Experience DesignerJason Mesut
I created this large poster in 2005 when I was working at Framfab, now Digitas LBi. It was created off the back of a bunch of research with project managers, designers, user experience folk (we called them experience architects at Framfab) and developers. It was used for many years at career events at Framfab/LBi.

Transforming Brand Perception and Boosting Profitabilityaaryangarg12
In today's digital era, the dynamics of brand perception, consumer behavior, and profitability have been profoundly reshaped by the synergy of branding, social media, and website design. This research paper investigates the transformative power of these elements in influencing how individuals perceive brands and products and how this transformation can be harnessed to drive sales and profitability for businesses.
Through an exploration of brand psychology and consumer behavior, this study sheds light on the intricate ways in which effective branding strategies, strategic social media engagement, and user-centric website design contribute to altering consumers' perceptions. We delve into the principles that underlie successful brand transformations, examining how visual identity, messaging, and storytelling can captivate and resonate with target audiences.
Methodologically, this research employs a comprehensive approach, combining qualitative and quantitative analyses. Real-world case studies illustrate the impact of branding, social media campaigns, and website redesigns on consumer perception, sales figures, and profitability. We assess the various metrics, including brand awareness, customer engagement, conversion rates, and revenue growth, to measure the effectiveness of these strategies.
The results underscore the pivotal role of cohesive branding, social media influence, and website usability in shaping positive brand perceptions, influencing consumer decisions, and ultimately bolstering sales and profitability. This paper provides actionable insights and strategic recommendations for businesses seeking to leverage branding, social media, and website design as potent tools to enhance their market position and financial success.

causes major dissatisfaction.
Car door missing the curb causes
no dissatisfaction, but not positive
satisfaction.
15. Basic
Customers/ users will rarely state
these, so you have to observe or
analyse other products or services
in depth to get to what they are

18. Performance
Satisfaction is proportional to the
way in which these are executed,
starting from dissatisfaction due to
slow, poor, or absent execution
through to high satisfaction due to
quick, powerful or exquisite
execution.
19. Performance
These are possibly the easiest to
ascertain from users or customers
as they are often ‘stated’ needs, so
will come up in surveys, focus
groups etc.
20. Performance

satisfaction
Waiting time in an airport: less
time = greater satisfaction

will not dissatisfy.
24. Excitement
Internet access on a plane or tube
is not expected and so will not
upset if not present, but will delight
if it is.
25. Excitement
A pillow menu at Penny Hill Park
Spa for RMA Xmas party is not
expected but is a rare delight.
26. Excitement
These are harder to come up with,
and really require an
understanding of ‘latent need’
which can only really be
understood through observation or
incredible genius intuition
