Bacon s Rebellion
There are many things that shaped the experience of enslaved people. One of the main forces that
caused slavery to be so common was the simple fact that there were no laws to control or prohibit
slavery. For many farms and industries, having slaves was very profitable because once the farm or
company was done with the slave, they could resell them. It is also the simple fact that slaves were
free labor. Bacon s Rebellion in 1676 also changed the lives of many enslaved people. Bacon had
promised freedom to anyone who joined his army. However, this promise was short lived. In ore to
avoid anymore outbursts or rebellions of the former slaves, the Virginia authorities pushed the slaves
whom would never again be free to the tobacco fields and

The Dark Wall The bell rang and we all squirmed out of Mrs. Clifford s room. Everyone with the same

Introduction. Epic Epiccare Is Rated As The Best Acute
Introduction
EPIC EpicCare is rated as the best Acute care and Ambulatory EMR for large hospitals with more than
75 physicians (KLAS Research,2017). As Houston Methodist (HM) is committed to Leading medicine
and improve patient experience, the leadership decided in 2013 to shift from MethOD an EMR based
on Allscripts® to a new EHR looking for an integrated solution that will help build a complete and
robust patient story, easily accessible by the care team to help them make more informed decisions in
order to achieve better health outcomes, improve communications, and get patients more involved by
providing them with convenient online tools. HM started the vendor selection process in 2014 and in
2015 they decided to go for EPIC EpicCare ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I attended several meetings where HM EPIC Leaders are preparing community hospitals wave 2 for
the transition to EPIC. HM are following the PROSCI ADKAR model (Hiatt, 2016) to manage such a
huge change, they are targeting to prepare the whole operational team for the EMR adoption and it is
not just an IT solution implementation.
As HM are planning for several waves of go live for other community hospitals along with plans to
upgrade EpicCare to version (20), I was asked to review high priority issues that were reported during
the community hospital wave 1 (CH1) go live to the command center leadership and try to identify the
key factors impacting user experience during such phase and come up with recommended solutions to
control it.
Learning Objectives and Expected Outcomes
The learning objectives for the Epic go live experience were:
+ Examine how informatics concepts and best practices learned, such as usability, visualization,
workflow analysis, integration, assessment, and evaluation, are considered in an EHR go live.

Cultural Differences Paper
Cultural Differences Paper

There are cultural differences within all the communities that make up the world, we are constantly
surrounded and reminded of these other cultures. In this paper cultural differences will be discussed
from the film Why Did I Get Married? which is an African American movie about the hardships one
goes through in marriage, friendships, and trust. This paper is going to give specific examples of Hall
s perspective of culture on the screen and Hofstede s five dimensions that are reflected in a particular
pattern. Examples of both verbal and non verbal intercultural communication and how they relate to

This movie is targeted for African American culture, so a lot of the language, slang, and stereotypes
were evident in this film and so there wasn t much explanation, it is simply something that is just
known as it unfolds in the movie. If someone is watching this movie and they are Asian they might not
understand much of what goes on in the movie, especially if they are unaware of the African American
culture. An example would be when the girls of the group go shopping and they are in a store looking
at lingerie and shawls made for winter weather, the shopkeeper came up to them and simply said we
don t keep cash in the store now of course one of the ladies went a little crazy because she realized
that she had said that because of their skin color. Hofstede s five dimensions of culture are power
distance, individualism v collectivism, masculinity v femininity, uncertainty avoidance, and long term
v short term time orientation. In the film the five dimensions are present, in the dimension of power
distance it clear with the powerful positions that all the characters have within their professional lives.
The way they live and own lavish houses leads to believe that they don t believe they are equals to
everyone else because of their status. Most of the couples demand respect and expect not to be
question in their motives, which is a higher power context. Next is individualism versus collectivism,

Basques Social Structure
The Basques are people who inhabit a region spanning over parts of north central Spain and
southwestern France. Some people are still confused as to where they have originated from. Basques
are now mainly found in an area traditionally known as Euskal Herria, which is located around the
western end of the Pyrenees on the coast of the Bay of Biscay. The Basques language is also called the
Euskera. The Basque language is an extremely complex language which has no close relatives
anywhere else in the world. I will be discussing the Basques infrastructure, social structure, and
superstructure how they maintained it all. The Basques infrastructure is not an industrial hub, but they
do maintain a unique regional identity. They can use an update with their infrastructure. Houses in the
city Bilbao houses many heavy industries, such as steel plants and shipbuildings facilities. They do not
have enough railroads tracks to transport merchandise to gain more money.
Social structure in Basques is somewhat similar to America s social structure. They is equality
between sexes in the division of labor. Woman are welcome to work alongside men in the workplace.

The people who are impacted by this situation are Emanuel, his roommate and Microsoft Corporation.
Emanuel s roommate offered a free copy of Microsoft Word to Emanuel. If Emanuel accepts the offer
he benefits greatly because he will be able to complete his assignments efficiently in his dorm room

Depressio Van Gogh Mental Health Research Paper
Van Gogh and Mental Health
Vincent Van Gogh was possibly the most notable artist of the impressionist movement. However,
beyond the brilliant artwork was a man that suffered from debilitating illness. Van Gogh spent years
struggling with bouts of depression interrupted by mania and anxiety. His state of mind was well
documented in letters that he wrote to his brother Theo, an art dealer living in Paris. Using these
letters many modern psychologists have tried to accurately posthumously diagnose the illness of Van
Gogh. Accurate diagnosis of a living patient is already an endeavor and many patients don t receive an
official diagnosis. Posthumous diagnosis is even more difficult because they have limited information
about the patient. When it comes to mental illness though, the official diagnosis is not that important,
it exists mostly so the patient has a name for what they are feeling. What is more important is
identifying and recognizing the symptoms that affect the patient s life. Van Gogh experienced more
than his fair share of symptoms and often would write to his brother about how these symptoms
affected his work as an artist.
One of many symptoms that plagued Vincent Van Gogh was depression. ... Show more content on

artists, but his work really resonates with artists that struggle with their health. Despite all the
suffering he went through in his own head, he managed to create beautiful pieces of artwork that still

Theory of Multiple Intelligences
Theory of multiple intelligences The theory of multiple intelligences was proposed by Howard
Gardner in 1983 as a model of intelligence that differentiates intelligence into various specific
(primarily sensory) modalities[disambiguation needed], rather than seeing it as dominated by a single
general ability. Gardner argues that there is a wide range of cognitive abilities, and that there are only
very weak correlations among them. For example, the theory predicts that a child who learns to
multiply easily is not necessarily generally more intelligent than a child who has more difficulty on
this task. The child who takes more time to master simple multiplication 1) may best learn to multiply
through a different approach, 2) may excel in a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Gardner elaborates to say that this intelligence also includes a sense of timing, a clear sense of the goal
of a physical action, along with the ability to train responses so they become like reflexes. In theory,
people who have bodily kinesthetic intelligence should learn better by involving muscular movement
(e.g. getting up and moving around into the learning experience), and are generally good at physical
activities such as sports or dance. They may enjoy acting or performing, and in general they are good
at building and making things. They often learn best by doing something physically, rather than by
reading or hearing about it. Those with strong bodily kinesthetic intelligence seem to use what might
be termed muscle memory , drawing on it to supplement or in extreme cases even substitute for other
skills such as verbal memory. Careers that suit those with this intelligence include: athletes, pilots,
dancers, musicians, actors, surgeons, builders, police officers, and soldiers. Although these careers can
be duplicated through virtual simulation, they will not produce the actual physical learning that is
needed in this intelligence.[8]

Literature Review On Aerobic Training
JOURNAL REVIEW: AEROBIC FITNESS
Title: The effect of high intensity and continuous endurance training on aerobic capacity
Aerobic fitness is the body ability to exercise for prolonged time whereby most of the energy came
from the aerobic capacity and cardiovascular endurance. The most popular way been used to increase
the aerobic capacity is the endurance training. An example of endurance training is LSD; this method
of training involves performing exercise at a low intensity (57% VO2 max or 70% of maximum heart

Master Craftsmen in the Medieval
I like crafts that are made out of necessity because they re a little naive you made it because you
needed it. Amy Sedaris. Master craftsmen during the Medieval Ages created items needed for the
kingdom to thrive. Craftsmen included candle makers, shoemakers, and farmers, but the most famous
craftsmen were blacksmiths, carpenters, and masons. Every type of craftsmen were in groups called
guilds and every guild needed to cooperate. If one guild failed to meet its needs, then the whole
medieval structure will fail, causing the kingdom to fall.
Carpenters, masons, and blacksmiths were important craftsmen in building castles and villages and
you had to go through apprenticeship for many years before becoming one of the three master
craftsmen. Before becoming a master craftsman, the child started their training at the age of eleven or
twelve and became an apprentice. A child would be able to choose his own profession or follow the
family business. Some craftsmen that a child can become include: carpenters, masons, and
blacksmiths The apprentice would last from five to nine years depending on the trade. He received no
wages and could not marry until he was a journeyman. After finishing apprenticeship, the apprentice
became a journeyman. A journeyman received money for his labour and bought supplies that he
needed. During his own time, he created a Masterpiece and later presented it to his group of
craftsmen, or guild, to see if he was ready to be a Master ,

In Till We Have Faces, C. S. Lewis retells the myth of Cupid and Psyche from the point of view of
Psyche s sister, with powerful insight into the nature of human affection and the relationship between
human and divine. In the original myth, Psyche is the youngest of three princesses, so beautiful that
men begin to worship her instead of Venus. The goddess avenges herself by commanding that Psyche
be exposed on a mountain to die, but her son Cupid secretly rescues her, having fallen in love with her.

She is, in the barbarian land of Glome where the story is set, the maternal, earthy fertility goddess
corresponding to the Greek Aphrodite. Orual frequently mentions the sort of holiness that was
associated with Ungit: the smell of blood and sacrifices, the darkness of her temple and the smoke of
incense, and all the mystery and fear of Glome s barbarian religion. Originally, Ungit has no statue to
show her face: only a misshapen black stone, which the old Priest asserts is, in a mystery, Ungit
herself. Towards the end of the book, Orual considers the stone. She finds that rather than having no
face, Ungit has a thousand of them: the unevenness of the stone makes it truly multifaceted, just as
Ungit is intricately bound up in every detail of life in Glome. Orual imagines that one might see a
different face every time one looked at the stone; but the face she sees herself is such as you might see
in a loaf, swollen, brooding, infinitely female. It is an ugly face reflecting the ugly, cruel nature of the
goddess, yet maternal, as Ungit is a fertility goddess though she is a devouring mother.
Ungit s son, the God of the Grey Mountain Cupid in the original myth is as unlike her as can be. His
face is hidden at first, and Orual, unwilling to believe in him, or believing that if he exists he must be a

Essay On Why Cats Are Better Pets Than Dogs
Cats are not better pets than dogs. Have you ever had that intriguing question about whether you
should get a dog or a cat as your new family member. Here are some reasons why you should always
choose to adopt a new dog, not a new cat. You will get more exercise from owning a dog. When I go
outside to bike, often my mom will follow me to get our dog exercise, but this technique will help my
mom in the long run, because even if her motive is to wear my dog out, she s also getting exercise and
getting healthier. Dogingtonpost says it is recommended that you walk your dog at least 15 minutes,
twice a day. Mayoclinic says to aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day. These two
times equal each other so if you walk your dog for the necessary amount each day, then you yourself
will also get the necessary amount of exercise daily. Dogs are a lot easier to train. When dogs were
first bred as wild animals they would follow their pack leader, when domesticated their leader
becomes their human. When you train a dog it becomes bonded to you, but cats, not so much. Cats are
more independent when it comes to relationships. Because cats have no notion of duty, service, or
pack behaviour. In other words, doing something for the sake of something else, or someone else, than
themselves. Says Nuno Desa. Dogs come in more shapes and sizes. Whether you are looking for a big

Analysis Of Buttons By Carl Sandburg
Attempting to explain a unique experience to another person is a nearly impossible task; adding in that
they had previously held opposing thoughts on your experience causes a gap between actuality and the
understanding of the receiver. In Buttons , Carl Sandburg faces this problem as he narrates the realities
of war while covering how those without the experience regarded it with oversimplification. Sandburg
conveys the message showing the disconnect of war between the soldiers in action and civilians at
home to share the horrors of war for those without the experience. As if possessing a natural ability in
poetic writing was not enough, Carl Sandburg added a unique angle to his pieces. Raised in a poor
environment and family, Sandburg quickly lost his identity within the masses and aimlessly roamed as
a hobo through various states. At the ripe young age of 20, he volunteered to serve in the Spanish
American War. This stood as one of the most important decisions in his life as it both built his
character and later gave way to his writing career as well. During the eight months Sandburg was
stationed in Puerto Rico, he was never called to fight on the front lines; still, he trained and prepared
in the case that such a time would come. Regardless of not serving directly, Sandburg still witnessed
some of the horrendous tragedies other soldiers went through and expanded on his own personal

The Need to Update and Revolutionize The Church
It was difficult for me to get past the first page of reading Willimon s The Pastor as Preacher. The first
sentence which struck me was most of those who are under authority refuse to treat preachers as their
instructors. These words hit me squarely in the face, because I have been struggling with my current
endeavors for my supervised ministry
The one great preacher...is the Church. I agree vehemently with this statement. This is why when I
drive pass the Church day, after day, seeing no activity going on. No cars, no influx of people coming
in and out of the doors. No pastor there on standby for any lonely, lost soul who is looking for solace
within the confines of the Church doors. I become more and more disenchanted with the Church. The
ideas I am trying to implement and initiate are often meet with great dissention from the people. They
think fish fry s and car washes are ministry. They struggle with treating me as instructor, someone
there to help teach them. I have never been so conflicted in my life. I want to see the Church grow. I
want to see the Church standing in the community as the greatest pontificator of the Gospel, yet it lies
dormant. It lies like a sleeping giant who is yet to understand the true power it possess. I think my
greatest opposition stems from the fact the previous pastor was an idealist. He had great ideas and a
great vision for the Church. The new pastor, a well grounded and well respected figure in our
denomination, seems

Lh Detection
The systematic review is aimed to determine what methods have been used to identify the presence of
LH in diabetes patients treated with insulin. The result of this review reveals that there is little research
evidence to support the formulation of recommendations regarding the method of detection of LH.
Forty three papers (original articles and conference abstract) were included in the review. Three
detection methods for LH are in current use namely visual inspection, palpation and ultrasound.
Fourteen papers presented use of ultrasound to detect LH and found the prevalence of
LH in the range 14.5 86.5%, compared to thirty one papers using palpation. The prevalence identified
by palpation ranged from 14.5% to 54.9%. The variation in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

However, the current use of ultrasound to detect LH uncovers the need for further research, to build up
a scientific foundation for such methods. Strengths and Limitations of the study
This is the first systematic review focusing on LH in diabetes people treated with insulin. A specific
search strategy was design and and a rigorous approach to the literature search and critical appraisal
was followed. It included all published full papers and conference abstracts found in the four major
databases in medical and nursing science, with no limitations on time of publication nor language. It
also included cases from both type I and type 2 diabetes. It covered different study designs and
encompassed research in five continents. The review includes patients using pump, syringe or pen.
The major limitation was the inadequate information due to limited published articles about LH
related to diabetes. Furthermore, the quality of most papers was moderate to low. Forty percent of
material was conference abstracts and case studies, reducing the information content and overall
quality. Removing low quality studies would have caused an incomplete description of

Globalization and Environmental Change
Globalization and Environmental Change Introduction Globalization, described as the expansion,
intensification and acceleration of global interconnectedness, is one of the intense phenomena that the
contemporary era has experienced. It has influenced the monetary, ecological, and societal
characteristics of all the nations of the world. Due to both positive and negative consequences on the
life of the citizens the world over, globalization is one of the most talked about issue of this century
(Javed 2004). Globalization is a continuing and very controlling process. It has now become more or
less a natural happening and is not going to stop. Though it has benefitted the world in numerous
ways, globalization is also hurting the world frighteningly in a very theatrical way (Samli 2002). It is
evident from the fact that the well organized and increasing human exploitation of the natural
resources obtained from the earth outlines the foundation for the scientific assertion that the world is
about to experience a mass extinction every bit as great as that which destroyed the dinosaurs 65
million years ago (Hedley 2002). It simply means that the humanity is facing global environmental
change as one of the most important challenges as a consequence of globalization. With the increase in
globalization, the environmental issues are also growing constantly. The issues that once were
threatening for a certain group of people on faraway places are now becoming a menace for all

The government is the reason we have order, safety, schools, roads, and many more things that we don
t think too much about in our everyday lives. There are two branches of government the Democrats,
and the Republicans. Our president, Donald Trump, is a republican. He believes in more investment in
our military than our schooling. We already took a pay cut in our schooling system because of that,
and the money that is going towards our schools are either going to public or private schools. But is it
really necessary for the government to fund private schools when students already have to pay tuition?
The government should be funding more towards public schooling.
By funding private schools, what will happen to the public schools that rely on that money from the
government to provide an education to the students in their community? What if the public schools
close, and the only other option that is reasonably close is a private school? A lot of people cannot
afford the tuition cost of private schools. The average cost of a private elementary school in Michigan
is 9,000 dollars per year. When kids move up to high school the cost jumps up to 13,500 dollars per
year. (Average Private School Cost, 1) Most middle class families cannot afford the tuition, and also
any extracurricular activities such as volleyball, or track. The average person in Michigan makes about
73,000 dollars per year (pay scale, 1). Depending on how many kids

Satan Court Case
You sit in the bench of a courtroom. The purpose of the trial is not immediately clear, but one thing is
certain: the prosecutor is angry. He shouts, shakes his fist, and threatens both the judge and the
defense. Amid his tirade, the judge stands, points his finger at the attorney, and yells, Away with him!
Without hesitation the bailiff violently grabs the attorney and whisks him away. Before the door shuts
behind them, the entire audience stands and rejoices over the prosecutor s removal. Even the judge
begins to celebrate!
At this point, you wonder if the story you just read is true. It is certainly not something you would
read in the paper or find within the annals of history. But, when you study the Scriptures, you will see
that very story come to life. It is the story of Satan s conflict with God and His people. Before Christ s
death, Satan stood within the heavenly court and slanderously accused countless people before God
(Job 1:6). In this capacity he accused both Job and Joshua (Job 1:9 11; Zech. 3:1 3). And, like some
prosecuting attorneys, he used cunning and deceit to accomplish his mission. In fact, it is said that he
is the father of such things (Jn. 8:44). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With the death of Christ, Satan s power over mankind was shattered (Heb. 2:14). His position in that
spiritual courtroom came to an end, and Satan was forcibly removed from it (Rev. 12:7 9). Now, Satan
uses his craftiness to deceive humanity so that it will carry out his will instead of God s. From time to
time, he is successful, but the Lord always turns the accuser s plans against him (Rev. 12:13 17). And,
in the end, Satan will suffer eternal punishment for what he has done (Rev.

How John Snow Tested The Water Supply At Broad Street Essay
Science in the 1850s was very underdeveloped as compared to the technology we have this day.
Therefore it would have been incredibly challenging for scientists, like John Snow, to hold labs and
experiment. One big factor I noticed that differentiates the two centuries was how John Snow tested
the water supply at Broad Street. These days, epidemiologists and scientists use meters or technology
to test the groundwater. However, John Snow had no other choice but to drink test it himself; this was
his method that led him to discover water borne diseases. From this, we can learn how much John
Snow was devoted to discovering better health for the communities. When John Snow gathered his
data, he knew that eliminating differences in location or other factors would mess the result of the
study. Rather keeping the confounding variable the same would help him find the problem of the
study, which was water.
London was going through a revolution, everyone living in the city for jobs, overpopulated and
starting to get polluted. However, John Snow did not budge even with this kind of adversity; but rather
was fascinated by the environment. Because during that time, London gave John Snow great chances
to examine and study water and air borne diseases, which is not commonly seen in rich and clean
countrysides. John Snow and his partners resided in London to discover new diseases and the cure for
that.
Not only was John Snow played a big part of the history of epidemiology, but his partner

Causes And Symptoms Of Tay-Sachs Disease
Tay Sachs disease is a disorder in the central nervous system. It is a disorder that most commonly
affects infants. It is a disease that is most commonly always fatal. Tay Sachs can also occur in teens
and adults, causing less not fatal symptoms, although this occurs rarely. This disease is caused because
you are missing an enzyme in the body named Hexosaminidase. Without this enzyme a fatty element
called Ganglioside builds up on lysosomes which then this overcrowds the cells causing this to
damage the nerve cells in the body but mainly on the brain. The effect on children begins in the fetus
during the pregnancy. A baby with the disease appears normal until six months of age, when it s
development slows down. Children with this disease ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Mailroom Plot Summary
The stories in David Rensin s book, The Mailroom: Hollywood History From the Bottom Up, are
exciting, intriguing and perfectly suited for reality television. The book, which is comprised of
interviews with over 200 mailroom graduates from some of the biggest Hollywood talent agencies,
reveals the not so glamorous lives of mailroom assistants in the most glamorous industry in the world
(Rensin). These mailroom clerks are young, motivated, and competitive individuals who aspire to be
Hollywood agents making millions. Such driven and aggressive people would make for excellent
reality stars. Due to the combination of business oriented tasks and out of office drama, The Mailroom
is the result of The Apprentice meeting Vanderpump Rules.
Although the clerks are in competition to get promoted, there is much more that goes on beyond the
mailroom. This series is not structured as a competition show because this would limit the story from
capturing the drama outside the office, which includes blossoming friendships, romance, and conflict
between strong personalities. In particular, the love lives of the mailroom clerks are somewhat
incestuous, according to Nir Caspi, a packaging agent at United Talent Agency, which would intrigue
viewers of shows like The Hills and Vanderpump Rules. Therefore, unlike The Apprentice, ... Show

The outbreak of war in Europe in 1914 was due to an aggressive foreign policy which had been waged
since 1900 Century How far do you agree with this opinion? Use Sources V, W and X and your own
knowledge of the issues relating to the controversy
There has been much historiographical debate over the controversy of who bore chief responsibility
on who was solely to blame for the outbreak of war. The Treaty of Versailles is significant evidence to
display how Germany was forced onto the conclusion that they caused the outbreak of war in Europe.
Fischer, the provoker of this controversy, states that since 1900 Germany was able to execute a war
due to their aggressive Weltpolitik. However, although many historians have agreed with, or ... Show

Blackbourn believes Tirpitz, Secretary of the Navy, bores more responsibility towards Germanys of
blame for the war by using this aggressive tactic of Flottenpolitik, agreeing with the argument that
Germany used an aggressive policy contributing to the outbreak of the war. Therefore, Sources V and
W clearly interlink and agree with Fischer s thesis on the basis that Germany was attempting
expansionism which resulted in tensions between European powers, leading to the outbreak of war.
Additional evidence to suggest Germany s liability for war was the Dual Alliance between Germany
and Austria Hungary, also known as the blank cheque. John Moses believes that the two allies
persisted during the entire war presenting how the solid alliance Germany made with Austria Hungary
of how she would give unconditional support in any war displays how Germany were taking war
preparations by sustaining alliances and extra support. Thus, creating international tension and
pushing Europe towards a war, displaying Germany s tactics of foreign policy. This links to Fischer s
thesis, where he concluded that Germany had hoped the Blank Cheque would result in war. He also
states the Government wanted to be distracted from innerpolitik which is why they was keen for war
in order to gain nationalism and patriotism within their country, relating to the theory of Primat der
Innerpolitik.

Analysis Of Shakespeare s Sonnet 130
Krystienne Delarosa
Ryan Wander
ENL 3
January 16, 2015
Sonnet 130 Shakespeare s Sonnet 130 uses imagery to compare his lover to other objects in order to
convey his true feelings towards his mistress. With this idea, one can make the assumption that
Shakespeare s argument is accepting the normality of women by understanding that they don t all look
like supermodels or goddesses. His views about his mistress can relate to how present day men look at
their significant other. Shakespeare s view towards women shifts between his sonnets. Comparing to
Sonnet 18 , it seems as if Shakespeare has gained a more respect towards his counterpart and with this
change in view, it is interesting to see this change and how even though with his time period, that
some men looked at women with respect and acceptance. Comparing to today s world, Shakespeare
has thought of ideas that some men still have to grasp about women s beauty. Today, some men still
think that women need to live up to certain values and they have to look a certain way in order to be
loved. This does not apply to everyone, but there are still the few men that think they have a power to
throw upon these ideas into society, making many girls self conscious, feeling unappreciative, or even
like they will never be good enough. Upon first glance in the sonnet, it appears that Shakespeare is
one of these men, but upon finishing the sonnet, it isn t the case. This sonnet is ironic because
Shakespeare spends the whole

Symbols and Symbolism
Flowers as a Symbol in The Chrysanthemums by John Steinbeck
In romantic or sexual context, a woman is often said to be as beautiful as a flower. In John Steinbeck s
short story The Chrysanthemums , Elisa Allen never receives this recognition. Although she is a strong
woman, she is frustrated because her husband will not admire her romantically in any way. This
frustration only deepens because she is childless and feels the need to be a mother. She discovers an
outlet for her frustration in a flower garden where she cultivates beautiful chrysanthemums. Steinbeck
uses these elegant flowers as a symbol to represent the tender, inner self of all women, including Elisa.
First, the chrysanthemums symbolize Elisa s children. She ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The chrysanthemums are symbolic of her children, and she is very proud of them. When Elisa s
husband compliments her on her flowers, she is proud, and on her face there [is] a little smugness
(240). She is happy and pleased by her ability to nurture these beautiful flowers. Elisa s pride in her
ability to grow such beautiful flowers reinforces the fact that the flowers are a replacement for her
children.
In the second part of the story, the chrysanthemums come to symbolize
Elisa s femininity and sexuality. The portrait of Elisa caring for the flowers as though they are her
children is clearly a feminine image, but her masculine image is also observed in her hard swept and
hard polished home
(240). This image is carried over into her relationship with her husband.
Elisa feels that Henry doesn t recognize or appreciate her femininity, and this feeling causes her to be
antagonistic towards him. There is an undercurrent of resentment towards her husband. Henry fails to
see his short comings, but Elisa fails to point them out to him. There is a distinct lack of harmony
between them, which causes Elisa to become discontented with
Henry. On observing her prize flowers, all Henry can say is, I wish you d work out in the orchard and
raise some apples that big (240). Henry s inability to understand Elisa s needs leaves her vulnerable in
her encounter with the tinker. The meeting with the tinker

Examples Of Outsiders In Metamorphosis By Gregor Samsa
Have you ever walked into school or a job and felt like you were not like everyone else? Many people
struggle with the feeling of not fitting into a certain norm, which causes them to feel as though they
are an outsider. In the story Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka Gregor Samsa becomes an outsider when
he wakes up to discover he is a monstrous bug. Not only does his family misjudge him but they starve,
mistreat, and seclude him. Outsiders like Gregor Samsa have always been different and misjudged.
Gregor Samsa is a traveling salesmen working to repay the debt of his father. When he transforms into
a bug the family decides to seclude Gregor by locking him in his room He was already almost totally
turned around, when, always with this hissing in his ear... when he was finally successful in getting his
head in the front door opening, it became clear that his body was too wide to go through any further...
his single fixed thought was that Gregor must get into his room as quickly as possible. (Kafka 151)
His father did not attempt to understand how Gregor was feeling or how this could have happened, he
was quick to judge him and cut him off from society. This does not only occur in stories, seclusion
happens everyday in some people s lives. For example celebrity Ariel Winter was mistreated just as
Gregor was. As a child she was starved and secluded by her mother. This just shows how people
misjudge others for being different.
When Gregor first turned into a bug, his sister Grete, showed him kindness by bringing him some food
She brought him, to test his taste, an entire selection, all spread out on a newspaper. There were old
half rotten vegetables, bones from the evening meal, covered with white sauce which had almost
solidified, some raisins and almonds, cheese, which Gregor had declared inedible two days earlier, a
slice of dry bread, a slice of salted bread smeared with butter... and out of delicacy of feeling, since
she knew Gregor would not eat in front of her, she went away very quickly... Gregor could now make
himself as comfortable as possible. (Kafka 153) As the story progresses Grete becomes careless and
no longer is sympathetic toward Gregor. In fact she hardly even feds him anymore But even when the

  • 2. Bacon s Rebellion There are many things that shaped the experience of enslaved people. One of the main forces that caused slavery to be so common was the simple fact that there were no laws to control or prohibit slavery. For many farms and industries, having slaves was very profitable because once the farm or company was done with the slave, they could resell them. It is also the simple fact that slaves were free labor. Bacon s Rebellion in 1676 also changed the lives of many enslaved people. Bacon had promised freedom to anyone who joined his army. However, this promise was short lived. In ore to avoid anymore outbursts or rebellions of the former slaves, the Virginia authorities pushed the slaves whom would never again be free to the tobacco fields and ... Just before we pressed through the iron guard we all hear a scream. A voice so high pitched it sent a shrill through every one of us and echoed down the pale halls. Right, then we knew we were about to have our ID cards handed to us. We drop them in the thermoset polymer pale with the sound of a marble pendulum. Out we go hands on fire, heads melting and sit under an azure, impalpable extremity. The shade from the tree froze us as it blocked out the sun. The whistle blew and we all strutted along the side of the blacktop. Just as we get to the edge we become a herd of gazelles running from a pack of hungry lions. The first ... Mom wraps the in a woven and jaded looking basket. Ding Dong, I can hear the doorbell from outside the door of Mrs.Gentry s house and the gentle stomping of feet growing louder yet staying quiet coming to the door. This movie is targeted for African American culture, so a lot of the language, slang, and stereotypes were evident in this film and so there wasn t much explanation, it is simply something that is just known as it unfolds in the movie. If someone is watching this movie and they are Asian they might not understand much of what goes on in the movie, especially if they are unaware of the African American culture. An example would be when the girls of the group go shopping and they are in a store looking at lingerie and shawls made for winter weather, the shopkeeper came up to them and simply said we don t keep cash in the store now of course one of the ladies went a little crazy because she realized that she had said that because of their skin color. Hofstede s five dimensions of culture are power distance, individualism v collectivism, masculinity v femininity, uncertainty avoidance, and long term v short term time orientation. In the film the five dimensions are present, in the dimension of power distance it clear with the powerful positions that all the characters have within their professional lives. The way they live and own lavish houses leads to believe that they don t believe they are equals to everyone else because of their status. Most of the couples demand respect and expect not to be question in their motives, which is a higher power context. Next is individualism versus collectivism, in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Using these letters many modern psychologists have tried to accurately posthumously diagnose the illness of Van Gogh. Accurate diagnosis of a living patient is already an endeavor and many patients don t receive an official diagnosis. Posthumous diagnosis is even more difficult because they have limited information about the patient. When it comes to mental illness though, the official diagnosis is not that important, it exists mostly so the patient has a name for what they are feeling. What is more important is identifying and recognizing the symptoms that affect the patient s life. Van Gogh experienced more than his fair share of symptoms and often would write to his brother about how these symptoms affected his work as an artist. • 11. Theory of Multiple Intelligences Theory of multiple intelligences The theory of multiple intelligences was proposed by Howard Gardner in 1983 as a model of intelligence that differentiates intelligence into various specific (primarily sensory) modalities[disambiguation needed], rather than seeing it as dominated by a single general ability. Gardner argues that there is a wide range of cognitive abilities, and that there are only very weak correlations among them. For example, the theory predicts that a child who learns to multiply easily is not necessarily generally more intelligent than a child who has more difficulty on this task. The child who takes more time to master simple multiplication 1) may best learn to multiply through a different approach, 2) may excel in a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Gardner elaborates to say that this intelligence also includes a sense of timing, a clear sense of the goal of a physical action, along with the ability to train responses so they become like reflexes. In theory, people who have bodily kinesthetic intelligence should learn better by involving muscular movement (e.g. getting up and moving around into the learning experience), and are generally good at physical activities such as sports or dance. They may enjoy acting or performing, and in general they are good at building and making things. They often learn best by doing something physically, rather than by reading or hearing about it. Those with strong bodily kinesthetic intelligence seem to use what might be termed muscle memory , drawing on it to supplement or in extreme cases even substitute for other skills such as verbal memory. Careers that suit those with this intelligence include: athletes, pilots, dancers, musicians, actors, surgeons, builders, police officers, and soldiers. Although these careers can be duplicated through virtual simulation, they will not produce the actual physical learning that is needed in this intelligence.[8] ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Master craftsmen during the Medieval Ages created items needed for the kingdom to thrive. Craftsmen included candle makers, shoemakers, and farmers, but the most famous craftsmen were blacksmiths, carpenters, and masons. Every type of craftsmen were in groups called guilds and every guild needed to cooperate. If one guild failed to meet its needs, then the whole medieval structure will fail, causing the kingdom to fall. Carpenters, masons, and blacksmiths were important craftsmen in building castles and villages and you had to go through apprenticeship for many years before becoming one of the three master craftsmen. Before becoming a master craftsman, the child started their training at the age of eleven or twelve and became an apprentice. Have you ever had that intriguing question about whether you should get a dog or a cat as your new family member. Here are some reasons why you should always choose to adopt a new dog, not a new cat. You will get more exercise from owning a dog. When I go outside to bike, often my mom will follow me to get our dog exercise, but this technique will help my mom in the long run, because even if her motive is to wear my dog out, she s also getting exercise and getting healthier. Dogingtonpost says it is recommended that you walk your dog at least 15 minutes, twice a day. Mayoclinic says to aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day. These two times equal each other so if you walk your dog for the necessary amount each day, then you yourself will also get the necessary amount of exercise daily. Dogs are a lot easier to train. When dogs were first bred as wild animals they would follow their pack leader, when domesticated their leader becomes their human. When you train a dog it becomes bonded to you, but cats, not so much. Cats are more independent when it comes to relationships. Because cats have no notion of duty, service, or pack behaviour. Analysis Of Buttons By Carl Sandburg Attempting to explain a unique experience to another person is a nearly impossible task; adding in that they had previously held opposing thoughts on your experience causes a gap between actuality and the understanding of the receiver. In Buttons , Carl Sandburg faces this problem as he narrates the realities of war while covering how those without the experience regarded it with oversimplification. Sandburg conveys the message showing the disconnect of war between the soldiers in action and civilians at home to share the horrors of war for those without the experience. As if possessing a natural ability in poetic writing was not enough, Carl Sandburg added a unique angle to his pieces. Raised in a poor environment and family, Sandburg quickly lost his identity within the masses and aimlessly roamed as a hobo through various states. At the ripe young age of 20, he volunteered to serve in the Spanish American War. This stood as one of the most important decisions in his life as it both built his character and later gave way to his writing career as well. During the eight months Sandburg was stationed in Puerto Rico, he was never called to fight on the front lines; still, he trained and prepared in the case that such a time would come. Therefore it would have been incredibly challenging for scientists, like John Snow, to hold labs and experiment. One big factor I noticed that differentiates the two centuries was how John Snow tested the water supply at Broad Street. These days, epidemiologists and scientists use meters or technology to test the groundwater. However, John Snow had no other choice but to drink test it himself; this was his method that led him to discover water borne diseases. From this, we can learn how much John Snow was devoted to discovering better health for the communities. When John Snow gathered his data, he knew that eliminating differences in location or other factors would mess the result of the study. Rather keeping the confounding variable the same would help him find the problem of the study, which was water. London was going through a revolution, everyone living in the city for jobs, overpopulated and starting to get polluted. However, John Snow did not budge even with this kind of adversity; but rather was fascinated by the environment. Because during that time, London gave John Snow great chances to examine and study water and air borne diseases, which is not commonly seen in rich and clean countrysides. Additional evidence to suggest Germany s liability for war was the Dual Alliance between Germany and Austria Hungary, also known as the blank cheque. John Moses believes that the two allies persisted during the entire war presenting how the solid alliance Germany made with Austria Hungary of how she would give unconditional support in any war displays how Germany were taking war preparations by sustaining alliances and extra support. • 34. Analysis Of Shakespeare s Sonnet 130 Krystienne Delarosa Ryan Wander ENL 3 January 16, 2015 Sonnet 130 Shakespeare s Sonnet 130 uses imagery to compare his lover to other objects in order to convey his true feelings towards his mistress. With this idea, one can make the assumption that Shakespeare s argument is accepting the normality of women by understanding that they don t all look like supermodels or goddesses. His views about his mistress can relate to how present day men look at their significant other. Shakespeare s view towards women shifts between his sonnets. Comparing to Sonnet 18 , it seems as if Shakespeare has gained a more respect towards his counterpart and with this change in view, it is interesting to see this change and how even though with his time period, that some men looked at women with respect and acceptance. Comparing to today s world, Shakespeare has thought of ideas that some men still have to grasp about women s beauty. Today, some men still think that women need to live up to certain values and they have to look a certain way in order to be loved. This does not apply to everyone, but there are still the few men that think they have a power to throw upon these ideas into society, making many girls self conscious, feeling unappreciative, or even like they will never be good enough. Upon first glance in the sonnet, it appears that Shakespeare is one of these men, but upon finishing the sonnet, it isn t the case. This sonnet is ironic because Shakespeare spends the whole ... • 35. Symbols and Symbolism Flowers as a Symbol in The Chrysanthemums by John Steinbeck In romantic or sexual context, a woman is often said to be as beautiful as a flower. In John Steinbeck s short story The Chrysanthemums , Elisa Allen never receives this recognition. Although she is a strong woman, she is frustrated because her husband will not admire her romantically in any way. This frustration only deepens because she is childless and feels the need to be a mother. She discovers an outlet for her frustration in a flower garden where she cultivates beautiful chrysanthemums. Steinbeck uses these elegant flowers as a symbol to represent the tender, inner self of all women, including Elisa. First, the chrysanthemums symbolize Elisa s children. She ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The chrysanthemums are symbolic of her children, and she is very proud of them. When Elisa s husband compliments her on her flowers, she is proud, and on her face there [is] a little smugness (240). She is happy and pleased by her ability to nurture these beautiful flowers. Elisa s pride in her ability to grow such beautiful flowers reinforces the fact that the flowers are a replacement for her children. In the second part of the story, the chrysanthemums come to symbolize Elisa s femininity and sexuality. The portrait of Elisa caring for the flowers as though they are her children is clearly a feminine image, but her masculine image is also observed in her hard swept and hard polished home (240). This image is carried over into her relationship with her husband. Elisa feels that Henry doesn t recognize or appreciate her femininity, and this feeling causes her to be antagonistic towards him. There is an undercurrent of resentment towards her husband. Henry fails to see his short comings, but Elisa fails to point them out to him. There is a distinct lack of harmony between them, which causes Elisa to become discontented with Henry. On observing her prize flowers, all Henry can say is, I wish you d work out in the orchard and raise some apples that big (240). Henry s inability to understand Elisa s needs leaves her vulnerable in her encounter with the tinker. The meeting with the tinker ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Examples Of Outsiders In Metamorphosis By Gregor Samsa Have you ever walked into school or a job and felt like you were not like everyone else? Many people struggle with the feeling of not fitting into a certain norm, which causes them to feel as though they are an outsider. In the story Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka Gregor Samsa becomes an outsider when he wakes up to discover he is a monstrous bug. Not only does his family misjudge him but they starve, mistreat, and seclude him. Outsiders like Gregor Samsa have always been different and misjudged. Gregor Samsa is a traveling salesmen working to repay the debt of his father. When he transforms into a bug the family decides to seclude Gregor by locking him in his room He was already almost totally turned around, when, always with this hissing in his ear... when he was finally successful in getting his head in the front door opening, it became clear that his body was too wide to go through any further... his single fixed thought was that Gregor must get into his room as quickly as possible. (Kafka 151) His father did not attempt to understand how Gregor was feeling or how this could have happened, he was quick to judge him and cut him off from society. This does not only occur in stories, seclusion happens everyday in some people s lives. For example celebrity Ariel Winter was mistreated just as Gregor was. As a child she was starved and secluded by her mother. This just shows how people misjudge others for being different. When Gregor first turned into a bug, his sister Grete, showed him kindness by bringing him some food She brought him, to test his taste, an entire selection, all spread out on a newspaper. There were old half rotten vegetables, bones from the evening meal, covered with white sauce which had almost solidified, some raisins and almonds, cheese, which Gregor had declared inedible two days earlier, a slice of dry bread, a slice of salted bread smeared with butter... and out of delicacy of feeling, since she knew Gregor would not eat in front of her, she went away very quickly... Gregor could now make himself as comfortable as possible. (Kafka 153) As the story progresses Grete becomes careless and no longer is sympathetic toward Gregor. In fact she hardly even feds him anymore But even when the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
