Puerto Rican Experience in Hartford Essay
Puerto Rican Experience in Hartford
Hartford is the home to the highest percentage (27%) of Puerto Ricans in the country (Cruz, 5).
Nonetheless, Puerto Ricans still face myriad challenges with respect to the integration and acceptance
of their culture in Hartford. Although the PR community is only two generations old, Puerto Ricans
have managed to both organize and mobilize in this relatively short time (Cruz, 2). Puerto Ricans have
focused closely on their ethnic identity because they viewed their incorporation into the political
sphere occurring only by means of asserting their difference (Cruz, 10). They have made their mark on
politics in Hartford through demographic growth, development of leadership in the community, and

I relate each component with a historical event in Puerto Rican politics and also consider how through
this historic mobilization Puerto Ricans have gained entitlement to more power, equality,
representation, consciousness from other ethnic groups, and to some degree, social change. I focus on
the Puerto Ricans migration to Connecticut, their development of ethnic awareness and power
awareness, their realization of common interests, their competing ethnic projects, and the brokered
representation they have endured as detailed in Jose Cruz s book, Identity and Power: Puerto Rican
Politics and the Challenge of Ethnicity. Finally, I examine an important point that Cruz only touched
upon briefly, which is the idea of cultural citizenship in the Puerto Rican community. This added point
helps us to fully understand the role identity politics played in Puerto Ricans lives.
Puerto Ricans first entered the realm of identity politics with their migration to Hartford, beginning in
the 1950s. Their motivation was primarily economic; that is, Hartford had an abundance of job
opportunities in restaurants, stores, factories, and farms in comparison to New York City and Puerto
Rico (Cruz, 37). Puerto Ricans were now working and living alongside many other citizens of
different ethnicities and were treated much like other

History Of Hunting Essay
history of hunting reveals that hunters of today share many of the same motivations and methods as
ancient hunters. While technology and accessories may be different that those used for hunting
thousands of years ago, the ability to take down an animal is something to be celebrated. When you
learn the history of hunting, you ll gain greater appreciation for this old tradition. Hunting is an
essential component of conservation and can be used in everyday life; it has been a part of American
history from its earliest beginnings and once provided a necessary source of food. In the early 1900s,
when many wildlife species were almost near extinction, hunters stepped forward and asked Congress
to impose an excise tax on the sale of firearms and ammunition products to help fund wildlife
conservation in the United States. Another act that came into effect was the Conservation Movement.
The conservation movement covers the movement to preserve and protect America s wildlife, the
lands, and other natural resources. A lot of hunters hunt for one purpose and that is to feed their
families. These hunters usually hunt during the specific seasons where they can harvest the animals
that their families will eat. Hunting is also an effective form of management because it will remove a
number of individual animals from a population and prevent them from reproducing. Reducing the
population will reduce human/animal conflicts, such as car collisions, Lyme disease and landscaping
damage.

The Voice From A Birdcage
The Voice from a Birdcage A brave woman sang a sombre song from inside a birdcage in the late 19th
century. As a novelist and also a well known feminist, Charlotte Perkins Gilman fearlessly spoke up
about her conception, freedom, in her masterpiece, The Yellow Wallpaper . She proposed big issue
divorce around that time. In this semi autographical story, she describes her conflict of marital discord.
Gilman intertwines her frustrations about a relationship with her husband and depicts the distress
through many symbols, so that people should be aware what genuine happiness as a human being is.
Through the relationship between Else and John, Gilman pointed out that females are given a
disadvantage by their husbands. For example, she explains that John stands high because of his social
status as a physician and a husband. Gilman illustrates this situation through the symbolism of the
wallpaper; two breadth didn t match one is a little higher than the other (768). Another example is that
Else is eager to live on the first floor because she can see the beautiful garden from the window, but
John keeps her on the second floor even though they should move all the furniture from the first floor.
Who is willing to carry all the heavy furniture such as a bed, a mattress, a dining table and chairs to
upstairs only for three months? John s decision is quite unreasonable. However, John s long absence is
the most frustrating for her. John goes out all day, and sometimes he stays in

Ruby Primer
In order to test whether the curry leaf possesses one of the 6 alleles and whether it has a Ruby gene
promoter, PCR and gel electrophoresis was used. Primers, short DNA sequences designed specifically
for each allele of the Ruby gene, were used to isolate the gene and amplify it for PCR. Multiple PCRs
were performed, each using a different primer set. Primers attach to specific regions surrounding the
gene and amplify only the region that is flanked. The forward primer is bound to a specific sequence
before the Ruby promoter, found to precede the actual gene sequence, and the reverse primer is bound
to the DNA after the gene. In order for visible bands for gel electrophoresis to be produced, a forward
primer must bind to one strand of DNA and a reverse primer must bind to the strand complementary to
the one the forward primer binds to. If both primers bind to the same strand, the PCR product formed
will not produce a result after gel electrophoresis. The size of the gel band of the DNA amplified by
the primer will determine the identity of the allele. Band sizes will ... Show more content on

Therefore, the primers and PCR products for each allele can differ. The Curry Leaf does not possess
any sequences corresponding to the primers used in this experiment as it did into produce gel results;
therefore, none of the investigated alleles are present in curry leaf trees. However, no clear
determination was made regarding promoter presence. Curry leaf trees may simply possess a different
allele that required different primers for DNA isolation and amplification to occur. This allele may still
possess a promoter. The allele the curry leaf has must be identified and compared to the gene sequence
of a plant with the same allele but is known not to express red coloring. If the curry leaf possesses a
longer sequence compared to this plant, it may contain a promoter because it has the extra base pairs
of a promoter sequence preceding a

The Menace Of Materialism In Gustave Flaubert s Madame Bovary
The Menace of Materialism
Written by Gustave Flaubert and published in 1856, Madame Bovary tells a story about the life and
death of Emma Bovary, a middle class woman living in mid nineteenth century France. This novel is
known as one of the best examples of literary realism ever written, and for good reason. Through his
writing and attention to detail, Flaubert does an excellent job of giving the reader an idea of just how
mundane everyday life was like in France during the mid nineteenth century. Through the various
characters in the novel, Flaubert is also able to portray many positive and negative characteristics he
saw in the people living during this time. Of the many different characteristics and ideas that Flaubert
uses to describe characters throughout the novel, I think that the many aspects he saw in the
bourgeoisie class and materialism are uniquely important. I believe that the ways Flaubert uses the
ideas and issues of materialism and similar principles he saw in the bourgeoisie to tell the story of
Madame Bovary, to criticize the bourgeoisie, as well as show how harmful and destructive he believed
these issues could be to a society. The historical context of the time that Flaubert lived in is a likely
reason for his use of the bourgeoisie materialistic ideas. In the time period that Gustave Flaubert
worked on Madame Bovary, the bourgeoisie were considered to be a very large class. The bourgeoisie
being a middle class of people such as manufacturers and

Morality In Macbeth
MORAL VALUE IN THE PLAY MACBETH
Positive moral values
a. Affection and love
Both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth love each other. Although they are blinded by the evil ambition,
they are a good couple. Macbeth loves his wife and so does she. Macbeth accepts her guidance and
advice and consults her concerning his plans. He shares his joy with his wife. Moreover, he is
affectionate in his action toward her and uses terms of endearment when speaking to her.
It is proved that when Macbeth is told of Lady Macbeth s death, he is too weary to feel more than just
a dull sense of loss and regret. Though, Lady Macbeth is more ambitious woman in prompting in
killing the king Duncan and makes him in downfall, Lady Macbeth also loves much his husband,
Macbeth. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ambition
In play Macbeth, the main character, Macbeth is the ambitious person, indeed, his wife, Lady Macbeth
is more ambitious. She is a prompter to do evil ambition to Macbeth. She motivates him to kill the
king Duncan and the story of the play becomes the tragedy. Macbeth Tragedy and Moral Values in
William Shakespeare s Macbeth does a tragic event by being killed by Macduff in the end of story. He
does downfall in his life.
b. Atrocity
The cruelty or tyranny is a best description for Lady Macbeth. She is the main role in motivating
Macbeth to kill the king Duncan. In his hesitation, she whispers that the king would be us. Finally,
Macbeth is killing Duncan. The cruelty can also be seen when Macduff fights with Macbeth. Macduff
is able to cut Macbeth s head.
c. Temptation
The big temptation is encountered by Macbeth. As his wife, Lady Macbeth has the evil ambition to
tempt Macbeth. By his goading, Macbeth finally is crushed and does in killing Duncan. Lady Macbeth
holds him to his vow to kill Duncan, telling him. This is the great temptation for Macbeth, he loves his
wife and family. Macduff s love of his family propels him to vengeance to Macbeth.

Edwidge Danticat Analysis
Many authors relate their own lives into the stories that they write as a way to express their feelings.
Edwidge Danticat s life in Haiti affected much of her writing and she likes to relate her life into her
books. A few ways she did relate her life into the book Untwine is by writing about the death that she
experienced, using her Haitian descent in the character s life, by making the character love art just as
much as she does, and having the characters parents immigrate from Haiti just like her and so many of
her family members did.
Everyone has a limited time and that time never seems like enough. Edwidge Danticat experienced a
very tragic death at the time she was writing Untwine , her mother died of cancer. This death affected
the story she wrote. In the book Untwine there are twin sisters, Isabelle and Giselle, and one of the
twins die in a car accident. Edwidge Danticat expressed her own sorrow of her mother s death as
Giselles sorrow, the twin who survived. Edwidge Danticat said, in the article Edwidge Danticat Tells

They both use a form of art to express themselves. Giselle loves to draw and paint, she especially
loves to draw her sister and family. In Untwine Giselle says, Many of my sketch pads are filled with
drawings of my family, especially of Isabelle, either playing her flute or swimming, (Danticat 65).
Giselle loves to make art very much like Edwidge Danticat.
Edwidge Danticat uses writing as an outlet of her feelings and she has published many books about
her life experiences, she also includes many stories relating to or about her family. A quote from
Untwine says, Grandma Sandrine told Isabelle and me that Haiti produced so many artists and so
much art that the art spilled over into nature and traveled in people s veins, (Danticat 34). This shows
how artistic the people from Haiti are, and both Edwidge and Giselle have a Haitian

The Roles of HMGA Proteins Essay
Despite a wealth of biochemical in vitro data on the HMGA proteins of various organisms, their
biological role in chromatin is still not convincingly clarified. Current evidence suggests that HMG
proteins serve a global role in chromatin by conferring a more open configuration to chromatin
regions that are more accessible to transcriptional regulators (Bianchi and Agresti, 2005; Catez et al.,
2004). In addition, there is massive evidence that HMGA proteins act as architectural factors that
facilitate assembly of functional transcription factor complexes (enhanceosomes) at DNA target sites
by various mechanisms. Several studies analysing altered expression levels of HMGA genes in
animals have demonstrated that the chromosomal HMGA ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, it is the overall aim of my PhD project to gain insight into the in planta functions of HMGA
proteins. The project will be performed in the laboratory of Prof. Dr. K.D. Grasser (Regensburg
University), whose research group is specialised on studying plant chromosomal proteins. Towards the
goal of elucidating HMGA function, a variety of experimental approaches will be employed using as
central tool Arabidopsis plants with altered levels of HMGA protein that will be analysed in
comparison to wild type control plants. The available data suggest that HMGA proteins as cofactors
assist the proper transcription of putative target genes (Grasser, 2003; Klosterman and Hadwiger,
2002). To evaluate this assumption, (1) we intend to examine plants that have reduced amounts of
HMGA (T DNA insertion mutants, amiRNA plants) as well as plants that have elevated levels of
HMGA (overexpression plants). Using these plants we will analyse (2) the consequences of altered
HMGA levels on plant phenotype and transcriptome. In addition, (3) the spatial and temporal
expression pattern of HMGA is examined as well as (4) protein interactions of HMGA.
3. Work program and Methodology
WP1. Starting point of the project is the molecular analysis of Arabidopsis candidate DNA insertion
lines (obtained from the NASC stock center) harbouring T DNA insertions in the gene encoding
HMGA. Typically seeds of a segregating population are

Hugh Bradner It was getting cold and repetitive doing many underwater dives into the frigid water.
Hugh had thought of ways to make his job quicker and easier or, if it came down to it, perhaps

Arguments Against Big Game Hunting
Is big game hunting acceptable provided that the animals do not belong to a threatened species?
Hunting has been around for a very long time. The oldest evidence of humans hunting dates all the
way back to around two million years ago, and the purpose of it was to collect the meat for food. Big
game hunting, on the other hand, is when you participate in selective animal hunting, which very often
only include threatened animal species. They have no intention of eating what they have caught,
instead they keep the animal as a prize and put it on display for their own satisfaction.
I will gather evidence and consider both sides of the argument before forming a proper opinion,
however, the world is big enough for both of us, and it is selfish for any of us to assume that animals
only exist as a source of food or entertainment for us humans. I feel very strongly about animals
having the right to live on this planet as much as we do. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I have researched the topic extensively, and have come to realise that the hunters who hunt for sport
are not interested in just any animal. Big game hunting, also known as trophy hunting, is based on
selectively taking the great, resilient and healthy males from a population. Based on this particular
information, I highly doubt that hunters would even bother to participate if they only were allowed to
hunt down animals such as rabbits. The part of the thrill of trophy hunting is targeting the greatest and
most vigorous specimen, not the smallest and

Ernest Hemingway s The Sun Also Rises
The post WWI political and societal climate produced a steep increase in the number of American
expatriates in Europe. These expatriates were disillusioned by the horrors that they witnessed during
wartime. Romantic ideals became obsolete, and traditional values of love and happiness faded with
them. The effects of this disillusionment can be seen in Ernest Hemingway s The Sun Also Rises, a
novel that revolves around the relationships and characters of a group of expatriates on vacation in
Spain for the Running of the Bulls Festival. Of these characters, only one still subscribes to prewar
values: Robert Cohn. Robert Cohn did not fight in the war, unlike the others in the group, but he lost

(Hemingway 16). These books range from travel guides on South America to romantic love stories
like The Purple Land which, according to Jake, is a very sinister book if read too late in life due to its
splendid imaginary amorous contents (17). This observation tells the reader about Cohn s mindset, as
well as Jake s. Due to the personal nature of Cohn s failures resulting in his losses, Cohn still has a
sense of optimism and romanticism that he explores through reading books like The Purple Land as
they provide him with inspiration for ways to better his life and his character. Jake, however, believes
that Cohn s obsession with The Purple Land is naive. Jake believes that his war induced impotence
has destroyed his love life, leading him to conclude that The Purple Land portrays an inaccurate
representation of love. Jake has lost all hope for himself, and this mindset proves it. One night, after
looking at himself naked in the mirror, Jake started to cry after getting lost in his thoughts, revealing
how hopeless he believes his situation is and how he still cannot fully come to terms with his

Egg Drop Project
The egg drop project is designed to use what we have learned in science and apply it to a more hands
on project. The goal is to keep a raw egg from cracking or breaking after a 3 meter drop. There are
quite a few constraints that go along with this project such as materials, time management, and
deadlines. The only materials allowed to be used on this project are; 10 straws, 2 sheets of paper, 30
cm of tape, 5 Kleenexes, 1 sandwich sized plastic bag, 25 cotton balls, and 50 cm of string. The plastic
bag must be used to contain the egg in case of breakage and the final product must fit into a 15 cm
cube. All of the building work must be done in class.
The science behind this project is conservation of momentum, conservation of energy, force time trade
off, and Newton s first, second, and third laws. These can be used to ensure the eggs safety before,
during, and after the egg is dropped. When dropped there are many forces that act upon the egg, some
of these are gravity, speed, velocity, and acceleration. When the project is built it is important that this
is taken into account. If the science behind all of it is used properly the egg should not break when it
hits the ground. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Anxiety Disorder And Anxiety Disorders
A feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease, typically about an imminent event or something with an
uncertain outcome. This is the definition for anxiety from a text book stand point. Someone that has or
has experienced anxiety would describe it differently. An anxiety problem can be developed through
genetics, past life events, and personality. Anxiety can be broken down into six different branches:
generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, phobia, post traumatic
stress disorder, and social anxiety disorder. People with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) often

during childhood but they are more commonly brought on suddenly during adulthood. These people
usually realize that their fears are irrational but they can t change them because even thinking about
them cause extra distress. 8.7% (9 million) of American have this disorder and is usually onset around
the age of 7.
It is very normal for someone to have nightmares or flashbacks to something traumatic that happened
but post traumatic stress disorder(PTSD) is much more serious. People that have experienced a very
traumatic event such as war, rape, death, or any other event will have PTSD. Sudden flashbacks or
memories can cause someone to have a panic attack or cause them to become very aggressive. PTSD

the most prominent reliable source of data that I discovered, having been written by a university

Many of my sources including Methyl Mercury The Danger from the Sea (Protect the sharks, 2012)
offer data and detailed explanations as to why it is so toxic to us as humans and the extreme problems
it can cause to the human body. As mammals, we cannot manage mercury levels in our system
because it is not naturally occurring in our environment, meaning we have not adapted to cope with is
causing us to suffer various negative side effects when ingesting mercury. Methyl mercury is 1000
times more toxic than organic mercury (Protect the sharks, 2012) which is an alarming statistic
considering the fact human tissue assimilates almost 100% of methyl mercury. According to Dr. Jane
Hightower, although there is no safe level of chronic mercury exposure, for reasons currently thought
to be related to genetics, some people have higher tolerances to methyl mercury than others. This
means reactions to the substance can vary in severity on wide scale. The Effect of Fish Consumption
on Blood Mercury Levels of Pregnant Women (Euy Hyuk Kim et al, 2006) explains that once the
methyl mercury is ingested, usually through the consumption of fish, initial signs of the poisoning
include numbness of the hands and feet, general weakness of the muscles, loss of peripheral vision
and damage to hearing and speech. However within the course of only a few weeks the effects of the
poisoning can dramatically worsen to anything between the development of type 2 diabetes, infertility
(especially in men), immune dysfunction, an increase in coronary heart disease and heart attacks or
strokes, mutations leading to cancer, dysphagia, visual impairments, insanity (hence the term mad as a
hatter) and neuropsychiatric damage being the worst. The neurological problems tend to originally
show themselves in the form of ataxia earlier on in the timeline of

Oncology Personal Statement
From scoring my first lab coat at age five to winning a science fair contest at age nine to assessing the
ecological health of the Bronx River at age sixteen, the sciences have always been my place to shine.
In the past few years, I have grown particularly attracted to biomedical science because of its
combination of both life science and humanism. My budding interest in pathology and clinical
applications of science, as I discovered in my internship with Bronx Westchester Area Health
Education Center, has me to discover oncology. I am interested in becoming a cancer researcher, so I
can perform innovative translational research that may assist cancer patients.
Cancer research captivates me, because it is both a rewarding and challenging field.

How Did Architecture Influence The Development Of Roman...
Writing Assignment Unit 7
HIST 1421 Greek and Roman Civilization
By Robert Wright
The Development of Roman Architecture Ancient Roman concrete is one of the greatest achievements
to architecture since the creation and shaping of limestone by the Egyptians when building the great
pyramids. Roman concrete structures today still stand after withstanding natures slow but powerful
degrading capacity. If you visit the Roman Pantheon, you would see, after all this time, that the
building still stands prominently and in near perfection to this day. Concrete was a major catalyst to
the innovation of Roman architecture. This essay seeks to explore more of the effects of Roman

When Rome began adopting Greek architecture and art (The three orders of architecture, Doric, Ionic,
and Corinthian) they began to make hybrid works that would represent the glory of the Roman empire
while maintaining the sophistication of the Greeks architect s prowess (Kamm, Antony. 2017).
However, Roman concrete was most widely used to construct roads for troops and to help faster
economic trade, as well as, being used commonly in buildings and walls. At about 120 124 the
Romans architectural mastery was so great that they could build the circular Pantheon temple, a
testament to the majesty of the Roman empire, and a place where the Romans could pray to their gods.
The Pantheon dome was created in a way where the concrete for the coffered dome was poured in
molds and mounted on temporary scaffolding where the center, known as the oculus, would be open
for the public to see the light or night of day, and stand as a testament to the capabilities the Roman

The Order Fulfillment Procedure For Cup Of Joe
Project Overview
For our Gemba project, we decided to analyze the order fulfillment procedure for Cup of Joe, a coffee
shop located in the Lennox Town Center. In order to capture the establishment s peak hours of
business, we primarily visited during the hours of 9:00am 12:00pm. We focused our attention on
orders for baked goods, coffee, and espresso drinks, as these products are the shop s main source of
revenue and reputation. On several separate mornings we were able to observe an average of 125
orders over three hours (a takt time of 1.44 minutes). In the evening, there were often less than a
dozen orders every hour. Since every order is slightly different, we have described the average order
and the steps in the process that are consistent in almost every situation. We have identified multiple
areas for improvement, which are referenced in the sections entitled analysis and recommendations.
When waking up to Cup of Joe, customers are welcomed by a large statue of a coffee cup on the roof
of the building. After entering the shop, customers walk up to the counter directly in front of them.
The first section of the counter displays all of the baked goods on a glass shelf. The customer
continues walking down this aisle until he or she reaches the cash register, labeled above by a sign
reading Order Here. The customer places an order and proceeds down the aisle to the station labeled
Pick Up Here. After the barista takes the order, a second barista usually steps up to

Essay on Individuality in Korean Art
Individuality in Korean Art
Considering the ancient art of Korea, unfortunately, not much is known. The country of Korea has
been constantly shaped and reshaped by existing civilizations, namely, China. Korea s vulnerability
geographically, has made Korea constantly throughout history open to many influences namely China.
Despite this overwhelming influx of alien influence from China, Korea s art forms indeed had
maintained it s individuality. The Chinese and Korean peoples are very different; ethnically, and
culturally. Therefore, even though Korea did attempt to mimic styles from the Chinese, it still
maintained it s overall individualistic forms. In my paper I would like to emphasize the marked

Shamanism, a religion indigenous to the Korean people, was formed thereby influencing early Korean
art, and is to remain influential throughout Korean history up to present history.
Trading with China started at about 100 BC. Up to this time, Korean art remained distinctly different
from its massive neighbor. Korean art reflected or was categorized, prior to Chinese influence, as
Scytho Siberian style. A style that is indigenous in the country of Scythia, near the Black and Aral
Seas). The artifacts consist of small portable metal artifacts made out of metal, such as weapons, horse
fittings, belt buckles, taking on the shape of animals.(3, Moes) Because the early Korean people were
nomadic, their art took on the shape of everyday life, like riding on horses, etc. Korean art had
changed even more by the pushing Hsuing Nu tribes, or the Huns, a Turkish speaking tribe, that
introduced to the Korean people, Iron and Bronze into their daily needs and warfare, and ultimately,
into their art. Then trade started with China and escalated, way into the modern period. One sees
appropriations of Chinese culture and Korean culture. A belt hook, in the shape of a horse, found in Lo
Lang, Korea, typically is hound in China. Here the beginning influence of Chinese art is seen in this
piece. The Chinese civilization in Korea, Lolang, opened the door for the influx o Chinese culture.

Data Acquisition And Recording Of Big Data
2.1 Data Acquisition and Recording Big Data is not just simply come from itself it is been recorded
and generated by some data generating source. For instance, if we have our ability to feel and realize
the arena around us, from our own heart rate and getting the data of toxins that are present in the air
we leave this will produce more than one million terabytes of unparalleled data for every day.
Furthermore, scientific experiments will also produce petabytes of data today. Whatever the data that
is produced is not useful, it could be mostly useful or completely waste of data storage it can be
filtered a compressed by other methods. . One task is to define these filters in this sort of way that they
do not discard beneficial facts. as an example, suppose one sensor gives the different readings than the
others it is most likely to be sensor failure however, how are we able to be sure that it isn t always an
artifact that merits interest? The data which is given by the sensors are mostly partial and temporally
correlated. To solve this problem, we need further research in science of data reduction that how this
raw data is intelligently processed that the users can handle easily without any problems. The second
challenge is to generate the right metadata automatically to describe what data must be recorded and
how the data is measured. Metadata acquisition structures can minimize the human burden in
recording metadata. Every other crucial problem right here is facts

Analysis Of The Novel The Absolutely True Diary Of A...
The novel, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian, by Sherman Alexie, fits some of the most
important criteria that makes a good book. The three criteria that makes a good book is a hook that
draws you in, a good conflict, and a relatable topic for the reader. The Absolutely True Diary of a Part
Time Indian has an excellent hook that wants you to read on. The first sentence in the novel is, I was
born with water on the brain (p.1). From here on, this hook makes you want to find out who this
person is and why he or she was born with water on their brain. This was an interesting hook because
it s not normal to be born with water on your brain, which made me want to read to find out why. The
second criteria that makes a good book is a good conflict. In this novel, there are many conflicts, but
the biggest one was when Junior leaves his school on his Indian Reservation for a school that is in a
mostly white town. Junior was telling his friend Rowdy, that he was transferring schools, Man, I was
scared of those Reardan kids, but Rowdy absolutely hated all of it (p.51). Transferring schools was
such a big conflict because he decided to leave his only friend Rowdy, from his Indian reservation,
leaving his friend Rowdy to hate him. Reardan was mostly an all white school, so Junior felt he was
going to be out of place. The final criteria is being able to relate to the book in some way. There are
many topics that the reader can relate to from this book, but one that

Racial And Ethnic Diversity
How do you envision the racial and ethnic diversity of the United States thirty years from now?
Explain thoroughly. In today society, racial and ethnic diversity is an everyday thing in the United
States. Racial diversity can be seen in workplace, schools, and etc. When it comes to the future of
America people say immigrants are it. The percentage of immigrants that has entered the United States
has continued to rise everyday now. Immigrants has begun to premaster English as their second
language. Racial Diversity has been a big issue when it comes to most like; hiring and promoting
people of color. Some individuals have had to deal with not being hired because of their race or due to
the way they look. On the other hand, some have had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
People shouldn t be determined by the way they look. Not being white doesn t mean you can t make
six figures and are able to support your family. Social media was created for the enjoyment of another
or better form of communication. Minority majority on shows how mixed the world is and how so
many people feel that race doesn t portray who you are.
This trend only offends those who minorities. It only reduces social problems because it allows people
to disrespect others by basically calling them out of their names. To make things better everyone has
to be on the same page as far as communication goes. Categorizing one another as the same regardless
of the color of our skin will reduce more than Minority Majority by creating a movement towards
making a difference in the world. If the current trend remains the way it is whites will become less
than 50 percent of the population by 2042(Tom Jacobs). Coming up with more suggests or ideas on
will it would be tolerant in the near future, the increasing diversity of the nation may actually yield
more intergroup hostility (Tom Jacobs). In my opinion there may be issues with some part of the
society when it comes to the time when we are merge as one. People just have to be more
understanding an aware of other people are now starting families and receiving jobs in the united
states so it s best to start accepting and treating everyone as the same.

The Power of Professional Learning Communities Essay
Benjamin Franklin said An investment in knowledge pays the best interest. Education opens the door
for everyone to excel in life. To become a strong nation, its people, especially children, must have a
good education so the nation can continue to excel and become stronger. Nevertheless, America is
suffering through an education crisis today. The current statistics show that the United States is falling
behind in education compared to other countries. The illiteracy rate is high, and the graduation rates
for inner city children are low. The causes of this crisis are everyday problems such as lack of interest
in school, poverty, and standardized testing. There are many solutions to the problem, but one

The United States also places 25th in math, 17th in science, and 14th in reading ( Best Education in
the World, 2012). Fourth Graders in the U.S. are 11th in Math in the Trends in International
Mathematics and Science Study ( U.S. education spending tops Global List, 2013.) Sixty six percent
of all fourth graders are not reading at grade level (Reese, Fredrick 2014). Fourteen percent of the
population, or 32 million adults, cannot read. Nineteen percent of high school graduates cannot read.
In less developed countries like Chile, Brazil, and Latina, children are increasing in academics three
times faster than American Students ( Best Education in the World, 2012). The problem in the
education system lies within the public schools, because the majority of students attend public
schools. In fact, only ten percent of children attend private schools (Jennings, 2013). USA Today said
Students in a handful of big city school districts have a less than 50 50 chance of graduating from high
school with their peers, and a few cities graduate far fewer than half each spring... (Toppo, 2006).
With these statistics in education, many people wonder why the United States is lagging, but one
major reason for the lagging is teaching methods.
The use of standardized test has been used for many years. Tests such as ACT, SAT, EOC, and

Witchcraft In Early Modern Europe
The notion of witchcraft has been around long before the witch trials in Early Modern Europe.
Different cultures have different images and stereotypes on what a witch is and what magical abilities
he or she may possess. Many people however, did not look at these magical men and women as bad
until the Holy Roman Empire began to look negatively on those people who were different, and
opposed the norm set by the elites. Driven by fear, those living under the control of the Holy Roman
Empire would began to blame other people for diabolical actions, or malicious activities. Women and
some men, were tortured and tested in cruel ways in attempt of finding evidence or gaining a
confession that the accused was a witch. Laws about how which were persecuted ... Show more

Before the English Civil War began, the legal system included justices, judges, magistrates, and
lawyers. King James I, according to author Malcolm Gaskill in his works Witchcraft and Evidence in
Early Modern England, had a great influence in the court systems. Before the English Civil War, the
witch trials were broken up in two parts. The first being that a Justice of the Peace would examine the
accused, then the second was an actual trial would occur. In those trials according to Gaskill, English
trials followed common law principles: lay jurors had to be persuaded by lay witnesses. Many trials
during this time period demanded more solid proof before the accused could be convicted. Gaskill,
also writes that the court systems prior to the Hopkins witch trials, people began to question intangible
evidence coming from the accusers and the witnesses. This shows that before the English Civil War,
the courts where yes, being tried for witchcraft, but the courts were also demanding solid evidence
against the accused person. During the late sixteenth century and early years of the seventeenth
century, many trials were being questioned by

that changes this is the fact that there is one point of entry into this venue. Negotiations were

Some Key Events Or Factors That Affected Canada In 1850-1890
What are some key events or factors that affected Canada in 1850 1890?
The North West Mounted Police also known as the NWMP was most effective from 1873 to 1920. It
was created after the confederation. The NWMP had a big role in stopping the whiskey trade and the
violence that was involved with it, on the southern prairies. Sir John A. Macdonald knew about the
harmful effect of the whiskey trade on the Blackfoot, and Blood tribes, along with other First Nations.
Lieutenant William F. Butler a British army officer said that the regions in Saskatchewan had no law,
rules, and/or security for property or life. This caused robbers and murders to get away with their
crimes, with no consequences. In June 1873, over 30 Assiniboines, American Indians were killed by
the whiskey trade in an event called Cypress Hills Massacre. The NWMP affected Canada as it
enforced the federal laws in the west, and the Arctic. They also helped end the North West Rebellion
with the federal government and made rules for the Klondike Gold Rush. Therefore, Canada was
affected by the North West Mounted Police in many ways.
What is the historical significance of the events for individual, groups, and/or communities?

Nuclear Crisis at Three Mile Island Essay
Nuclear Crisis at Three Mile Island
Abstract
In March of 1979, just ten miles south of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, the Nuclear Power Plant at Three
Mile Island Unit 2 came close to nuclear melt down. Despite standards set by the Nuclear Regulatory
Commission (NRC), the plant ran for several years prior to the accident under poor conditions.
Communication certainly played a role in this near tragedy, as two engineers had foreseen the
consequences, but their advice went unheeded. Although most of the economic and social impacts of
this incident were minimal, this unpleasant event ended the nuclear power industry in America.

In the control room, approximately fifty alarms were constantly going off. Jim Creswell was certain
that the operators down at TMI 2 were taking the wrong measures when accidents occurred. But
Creswell was considered a nuisance and a troublemaker, whenever he brought these things to his boss
attention. Everything costs money to fix, and the plant was new, they just need time to work out the
kinks. Creswell was not the only one to notice the problem. At the Tennessee Valley Authority, whistle
blower and engineer, Carl Michelson had found a major flaw in the system in Unit Two: The pipe
connecting the pressurizer to the rest of the system dips. Like the U shaped sink drain trap at home,
the bend works as a vapor lock. This is great at home, because it keeps the sewer gasses from backing
up. Here, it meant that the water cooling the nuclear waste could turn to steam, and this steam could
be trapped in the main loop with no safe ventilation route. Michelson realized that if the plant had
such an occurrence after a few years running, the results could be disastrous, but he was also aware of
how the NRC worked and how expensive it is to change equipment. Michelson was set on getting
management to notice the problem, despite their opposition.
The design of the control room revealed the overconfidence of plant management. The control room
was designed for normal

Examples Of Satire In Tartuffe
Tartuffe
Satire is used by many authors to convey different ideas, beliefs, or lessons. There are two different
types of satire. The first type of satire is conveys through light hearted mockery with an underlying
tone of respect, this is referred to as Horatian satire. Another type is Juvenalian satire and that is
portrayed through more serious tone, it is a call to action and is generally driven by a sense of moral
outrage. Tartuffe is a Horatian satire, rather than a Juvenalian satire. This is shown through Tartuffe
and Orgon s relationship, Dorine s character, and the ending.
Tartuffe and Orgon s relationship prove that Tartuffe is a Horatian satire because of Orgon s
obliviousness and Tartuffe s slyness. When the play begins, Molere writes Tartuffe as an innocent guy
who is in love with Mariane and is looked down upon by everyone around him. The audience is lead
to believe that Tartuffe is this charming young man who is a saint and commits no evil. Orgon is
completely enthralled with Tartuffe and he can not wait for him to marry his daughter, Mariane. As the
play continues, the author allows the audience to witness conversations and scenes that Orgon does

  • 2. Puerto Rican Experience in Hartford Essay Puerto Rican Experience in Hartford Hartford is the home to the highest percentage (27%) of Puerto Ricans in the country (Cruz, 5). Nonetheless, Puerto Ricans still face myriad challenges with respect to the integration and acceptance of their culture in Hartford. Although the PR community is only two generations old, Puerto Ricans have managed to both organize and mobilize in this relatively short time (Cruz, 2). Puerto Ricans have focused closely on their ethnic identity because they viewed their incorporation into the political sphere occurring only by means of asserting their difference (Cruz, 10). They have made their mark on politics in Hartford through demographic growth, development of leadership in the community, and their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I relate each component with a historical event in Puerto Rican politics and also consider how through this historic mobilization Puerto Ricans have gained entitlement to more power, equality, representation, consciousness from other ethnic groups, and to some degree, social change. I focus on the Puerto Ricans migration to Connecticut, their development of ethnic awareness and power awareness, their realization of common interests, their competing ethnic projects, and the brokered representation they have endured as detailed in Jose Cruz s book, Identity and Power: Puerto Rican Politics and the Challenge of Ethnicity. Finally, I examine an important point that Cruz only touched upon briefly, which is the idea of cultural citizenship in the Puerto Rican community. This added point helps us to fully understand the role identity politics played in Puerto Ricans lives. Puerto Ricans first entered the realm of identity politics with their migration to Hartford, beginning in the 1950s. Their motivation was primarily economic; that is, Hartford had an abundance of job opportunities in restaurants, stores, factories, and farms in comparison to New York City and Puerto Rico (Cruz, 37). Puerto Ricans were now working and living alongside many other citizens of different ethnicities and were treated much like other ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. History Of Hunting Essay history of hunting reveals that hunters of today share many of the same motivations and methods as ancient hunters. While technology and accessories may be different that those used for hunting thousands of years ago, the ability to take down an animal is something to be celebrated. When you learn the history of hunting, you ll gain greater appreciation for this old tradition. Hunting is an essential component of conservation and can be used in everyday life; it has been a part of American history from its earliest beginnings and once provided a necessary source of food. In the early 1900s, when many wildlife species were almost near extinction, hunters stepped forward and asked Congress to impose an excise tax on the sale of firearms and ammunition products to help fund wildlife conservation in the United States. Another act that came into effect was the Conservation Movement. The conservation movement covers the movement to preserve and protect America s wildlife, the lands, and other natural resources. A lot of hunters hunt for one purpose and that is to feed their families. These hunters usually hunt during the specific seasons where they can harvest the animals that their families will eat. Hunting is also an effective form of management because it will remove a number of individual animals from a population and prevent them from reproducing. Reducing the population will reduce human/animal conflicts, such as car collisions, Lyme disease and landscaping damage. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Voice From A Birdcage The Voice from a Birdcage A brave woman sang a sombre song from inside a birdcage in the late 19th century. As a novelist and also a well known feminist, Charlotte Perkins Gilman fearlessly spoke up about her conception, freedom, in her masterpiece, The Yellow Wallpaper . She proposed big issue divorce around that time. In this semi autographical story, she describes her conflict of marital discord. Gilman intertwines her frustrations about a relationship with her husband and depicts the distress through many symbols, so that people should be aware what genuine happiness as a human being is. Through the relationship between Else and John, Gilman pointed out that females are given a disadvantage by their husbands. For example, she explains that John stands high because of his social status as a physician and a husband. Gilman illustrates this situation through the symbolism of the wallpaper; two breadth didn t match one is a little higher than the other (768). Another example is that Else is eager to live on the first floor because she can see the beautiful garden from the window, but John keeps her on the second floor even though they should move all the furniture from the first floor. Who is willing to carry all the heavy furniture such as a bed, a mattress, a dining table and chairs to upstairs only for three months? John s decision is quite unreasonable. However, John s long absence is the most frustrating for her. John goes out all day, and sometimes he stays in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Ruby Primer In order to test whether the curry leaf possesses one of the 6 alleles and whether it has a Ruby gene promoter, PCR and gel electrophoresis was used. Primers, short DNA sequences designed specifically for each allele of the Ruby gene, were used to isolate the gene and amplify it for PCR. Multiple PCRs were performed, each using a different primer set. Primers attach to specific regions surrounding the gene and amplify only the region that is flanked. The forward primer is bound to a specific sequence before the Ruby promoter, found to precede the actual gene sequence, and the reverse primer is bound to the DNA after the gene. In order for visible bands for gel electrophoresis to be produced, a forward primer must bind to one strand of DNA and a reverse primer must bind to the strand complementary to the one the forward primer binds to. If both primers bind to the same strand, the PCR product formed will not produce a result after gel electrophoresis. The size of the gel band of the DNA amplified by the primer will determine the identity of the allele. Band sizes will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore, the primers and PCR products for each allele can differ. The Curry Leaf does not possess any sequences corresponding to the primers used in this experiment as it did into produce gel results; therefore, none of the investigated alleles are present in curry leaf trees. However, no clear determination was made regarding promoter presence. Curry leaf trees may simply possess a different allele that required different primers for DNA isolation and amplification to occur. This allele may still possess a promoter. The allele the curry leaf has must be identified and compared to the gene sequence of a plant with the same allele but is known not to express red coloring. If the curry leaf possesses a longer sequence compared to this plant, it may contain a promoter because it has the extra base pairs of a promoter sequence preceding a ... • 7. The Menace Of Materialism In Gustave Flaubert s Madame Bovary The Menace of Materialism Written by Gustave Flaubert and published in 1856, Madame Bovary tells a story about the life and death of Emma Bovary, a middle class woman living in mid nineteenth century France. This novel is known as one of the best examples of literary realism ever written, and for good reason. Through his writing and attention to detail, Flaubert does an excellent job of giving the reader an idea of just how mundane everyday life was like in France during the mid nineteenth century. Through the various characters in the novel, Flaubert is also able to portray many positive and negative characteristics he saw in the people living during this time. Of the many different characteristics and ideas that Flaubert uses to describe characters throughout the novel, I think that the many aspects he saw in the bourgeoisie class and materialism are uniquely important. I believe that the ways Flaubert uses the ideas and issues of materialism and similar principles he saw in the bourgeoisie to tell the story of Madame Bovary, to criticize the bourgeoisie, as well as show how harmful and destructive he believed these issues could be to a society. The historical context of the time that Flaubert lived in is a likely reason for his use of the bourgeoisie materialistic ideas. In the time period that Gustave Flaubert worked on Madame Bovary, the bourgeoisie were considered to be a very large class. The bourgeoisie being a middle class of people such as manufacturers and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Edwidge Danticat Analysis Many authors relate their own lives into the stories that they write as a way to express their feelings. Edwidge Danticat s life in Haiti affected much of her writing and she likes to relate her life into her books. A few ways she did relate her life into the book Untwine is by writing about the death that she experienced, using her Haitian descent in the character s life, by making the character love art just as much as she does, and having the characters parents immigrate from Haiti just like her and so many of her family members did. Everyone has a limited time and that time never seems like enough. Edwidge Danticat experienced a very tragic death at the time she was writing Untwine , her mother died of cancer. This death affected the story she wrote. In the book Untwine there are twin sisters, Isabelle and Giselle, and one of the twins die in a car accident. Edwidge Danticat expressed her own sorrow of her mother s death as Giselles sorrow, the twin who survived. Edwidge Danticat said, in the article Edwidge Danticat Tells the ... In Untwine Giselle says, Many of my sketch pads are filled with drawings of my family, especially of Isabelle, either playing her flute or swimming, (Danticat 65). Giselle loves to make art very much like Edwidge Danticat. Edwidge Danticat uses writing as an outlet of her feelings and she has published many books about her life experiences, she also includes many stories relating to or about her family. A quote from Untwine says, Grandma Sandrine told Isabelle and me that Haiti produced so many artists and so much art that the art spilled over into nature and traveled in people s veins, (Danticat 34). Current evidence suggests that HMG proteins serve a global role in chromatin by conferring a more open configuration to chromatin regions that are more accessible to transcriptional regulators (Bianchi and Agresti, 2005; Catez et al., 2004). In addition, there is massive evidence that HMGA proteins act as architectural factors that facilitate assembly of functional transcription factor complexes (enhanceosomes) at DNA target sites by various mechanisms. Several studies analysing altered expression levels of HMGA genes in animals have demonstrated that the chromosomal HMGA ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore, it is the overall aim of my PhD project to gain insight into the in planta functions of HMGA proteins. The project will be performed in the laboratory of Prof. Dr. K.D. Grasser (Regensburg University), whose research group is specialised on studying plant chromosomal proteins. Towards the goal of elucidating HMGA function, a variety of experimental approaches will be employed using as central tool Arabidopsis plants with altered levels of HMGA protein that will be analysed in comparison to wild type control plants. The available data suggest that HMGA proteins as cofactors assist the proper transcription of putative target genes (Grasser, 2003; Klosterman and Hadwiger, 2002). To evaluate this assumption, (1) we intend to examine plants that have reduced amounts of HMGA (T DNA insertion mutants, amiRNA plants) as well as plants that have elevated levels of HMGA (overexpression plants). Using these plants we will analyse (2) the consequences of altered HMGA levels on plant phenotype and transcriptome. In addition, (3) the spatial and temporal expression pattern of HMGA is examined as well as (4) protein interactions of HMGA. 3. Work program and Methodology WP1. Starting point of the project is the molecular analysis of Arabidopsis candidate DNA insertion lines (obtained from the NASC stock center) harbouring T DNA insertions in the gene encoding HMGA. Hugh had thought of ways to make his job quicker and easier or, if it came down to it, perhaps something warmer. In his basement, he was working on suit that could hold warm water inside. Separating the cold and warm water with the fabric. It was the neoprene fabric recommended by the scientist and engineer of Scripps Institute. Today Hugh had finally finished fabricating the suit in his basement, but it was very heavy and hasn t been in a test dive yet. He and his co workers decided to create this wet suit to make their work easier, maybe go for a US patent if possible. If that didn t work he could just sell the suit to the navy and such. • 12. Arguments Against Big Game Hunting Is big game hunting acceptable provided that the animals do not belong to a threatened species? Hunting has been around for a very long time. The oldest evidence of humans hunting dates all the way back to around two million years ago, and the purpose of it was to collect the meat for food. Big game hunting, on the other hand, is when you participate in selective animal hunting, which very often only include threatened animal species. They have no intention of eating what they have caught, instead they keep the animal as a prize and put it on display for their own satisfaction. I will gather evidence and consider both sides of the argument before forming a proper opinion, however, the world is big enough for both of us, and it is selfish for any of us to assume that animals only exist as a source of food or entertainment for us humans. These expatriates were disillusioned by the horrors that they witnessed during wartime. Romantic ideals became obsolete, and traditional values of love and happiness faded with them. The effects of this disillusionment can be seen in Ernest Hemingway s The Sun Also Rises, a novel that revolves around the relationships and characters of a group of expatriates on vacation in Spain for the Running of the Bulls Festival. The goal is to keep a raw egg from cracking or breaking after a 3 meter drop. There are quite a few constraints that go along with this project such as materials, time management, and deadlines. The only materials allowed to be used on this project are; 10 straws, 2 sheets of paper, 30 cm of tape, 5 Kleenexes, 1 sandwich sized plastic bag, 25 cotton balls, and 50 cm of string. Many of my sources including Methyl Mercury The Danger from the Sea (Protect the sharks, 2012) offer data and detailed explanations as to why it is so toxic to us as humans and the extreme problems it can cause to the human body. As mammals, we cannot manage mercury levels in our system because it is not naturally occurring in our environment, meaning we have not adapted to cope with is causing us to suffer various negative side effects when ingesting mercury. Methyl mercury is 1000 times more toxic than organic mercury (Protect the sharks, 2012) which is an alarming statistic considering the fact human tissue assimilates almost 100% of methyl mercury. According to Dr. Jane Hightower, although there is no safe level of chronic mercury exposure, for reasons currently thought to be related to genetics, some people have higher tolerances to methyl mercury than others. This means reactions to the substance can vary in severity on wide scale. The Effect of Fish Consumption on Blood Mercury Levels of Pregnant Women (Euy Hyuk Kim et al, 2006) explains that once the methyl mercury is ingested, usually through the consumption of fish, initial signs of the poisoning include numbness of the hands and feet, general weakness of the muscles, loss of peripheral vision and damage to hearing and speech. However within the course of only a few weeks the effects of the poisoning can dramatically worsen to anything between the development of type 2 diabetes, infertility (especially in men), immune dysfunction, an increase in coronary heart disease and heart attacks or strokes, mutations leading to cancer, dysphagia, visual impairments, insanity (hence the term mad as a hatter) and neuropsychiatric damage being the worst. The novel, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian, by Sherman Alexie, fits some of the most important criteria that makes a good book. The three criteria that makes a good book is a hook that draws you in, a good conflict, and a relatable topic for the reader. The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian has an excellent hook that wants you to read on. The first sentence in the novel is, I was born with water on the brain (p.1). From here on, this hook makes you want to find out who this person is and why he or she was born with water on their brain. This was an interesting hook because it s not normal to be born with water on your brain, which made me want to read to find out why. The second criteria that makes a good book is a good conflict. Junior was telling his friend Rowdy, that he was transferring schools, Man, I was scared of those Reardan kids, but Rowdy absolutely hated all of it (p.51). Transferring schools was such a big conflict because he decided to leave his only friend Rowdy, from his Indian reservation, leaving his friend Rowdy to hate him. Many trials during this time period demanded more solid proof before the accused could be convicted. Gaskill, also writes that the court systems prior to the Hopkins witch trials, people began to question intangible evidence coming from the accusers and the witnesses. This shows that before the English Civil War, the courts where yes, being tried for witchcraft, but the courts were also demanding solid evidence against the accused person. • 30. Trauma Case Study Essay When looking at the necessity of actions in this case we deduct the following; The incident is in its fifth day with little to no change in status. Dykes continues to be demanding and disinterested in offering any concessions and continuing his initial demands. Dykes is now giving deadlines for which he intends to escalate with violence. We feel the justification for preparation of a plan to assault due to this lack of change is necessary. When reviewing the final phone conversation with Dykes it is evident that his level of agitation is significantly increasing, he is extremely irritated due to his perception of stalling on our side. He is angry with those whom he feels are calling the shots and is speaking as if he will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this case, the planning and preparation allowed for additional actions by the team to protect Ethan by ensuring he was in a place outside of the direct assault. We look to the onset of this event including the murder of a man whom had not given Dykes what he requested. We feel this behavior would have lead to similar harm to Ethan and law enforcement. These actions needed to occur when they did as Dykes behavior would have continued to escalate. Ethan s health is a concern. Should Dykes increased agitation change the ability to provide Ethan medication this could be jeopardized. Dykes is angered by what he sees as a lack of action to meet his demands. As time continues on, this will not improve. With these failing negotiations we feel there is no less risky alternatives available. The factor that changes this is the fact that there is one point of entry into this venue. Negotiations were ineffective and did very little to change anything. Losing negotiations could drastically diminish the ability to plan for and execute an assault due tot he challenges of this venue. Using the daughter as a TPI and offering this concession prior to an attempted assault would take away any other options for requiring the hatch to be opened. The North West Mounted Police also known as the NWMP was most effective from 1873 to 1920. It was created after the confederation. • 32. Nuclear Crisis at Three Mile Island Essay Nuclear Crisis at Three Mile Island Abstract In March of 1979, just ten miles south of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, the Nuclear Power Plant at Three Mile Island Unit 2 came close to nuclear melt down. Despite standards set by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), the plant ran for several years prior to the accident under poor conditions. Communication certainly played a role in this near tragedy, as two engineers had foreseen the consequences, but their advice went unheeded. Although most of the economic and social impacts of this incident were minimal, this unpleasant event ended the nuclear power industry in America. Introduction The plant at Three Mile Island was a headache from the start. The $700,000,000 project ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the control room, approximately fifty alarms were constantly going off. Jim Creswell was certain that the operators down at TMI 2 were taking the wrong measures when accidents occurred. But Creswell was considered a nuisance and a troublemaker, whenever he brought these things to his boss attention. Everything costs money to fix, and the plant was new, they just need time to work out the kinks. Creswell was not the only one to notice the problem. At the Tennessee Valley Authority, whistle blower and engineer, Carl Michelson had found a major flaw in the system in Unit Two: The pipe connecting the pressurizer to the rest of the system dips. Like the U shaped sink drain trap at home, the bend works as a vapor lock. This is great at home, because it keeps the sewer gasses from backing up. Here, it meant that the water cooling the nuclear waste could turn to steam, and this steam could be trapped in the main loop with no safe ventilation route. Michelson realized that if the plant had such an occurrence after a few years running, the results could be disastrous, but he was also aware of how the NRC worked and how expensive it is to change equipment. Michelson was set on getting management to notice the problem, despite their opposition. The design of the control room revealed the overconfidence of plant management. The control room was designed for normal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Another type is Juvenalian satire and that is portrayed through more serious tone, it is a call to action and is generally driven by a sense of moral outrage. Tartuffe is a Horatian satire, rather than a Juvenalian satire. This is shown through Tartuffe and Orgon s relationship, Dorine s character, and the ending. Tartuffe and Orgon s relationship prove that Tartuffe is a Horatian satire because of Orgon s obliviousness and Tartuffe s slyness.
