Why Did The Inca Created Terraces
The Incans were sophisticated farmers. They used very advanced and specialised techniques to grow a
huge variety of crops. The Incans created terraces to grow their crops on. They built terraces on the
hillsides for two reasons. First to make hillsides flat and second to suit the different altitude
requirements of different plants. By building the terraces on the sides of mountains the Incans also
enabled their crops to get more sunlight instead of planting in the shaded valleys. The terraces were
formed with stone walls and included steps to move from one level to the next. The stone walls
prevented erosion. The stone walls were also used as they would heat up during the day and slowly
release heat into the soil when temperatures cooled

Using Examples, Explain the Difference Between Obscene and...
1. Using examples, explain the difference between obscene and indecent materials. Obscene and
indecent both have different meanings but are similar in many ways. Obscene material is described as
disgusting or repulsive but indecent material is described as being offensive to the public. Both
obscene and indecent can be view differently by the public; however, the Constitution plays a role
with indecent material. Obscene material is not protected by the First Amendment, (The Dynamics of
Mass Communication Tenth Edition, page 377) and broadcast stations cannot air obscene material at
anytime. The problem with this is that no one had come up with a set standard of what obscene
material is. Due to the difference in beliefs between ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Theme Of Life In O Pioneers ! By Willa Cather
It seems that everything in Willa Cather s O Pioneers!, aside from the land, starts out so full of life and
ends so utterly devoid of it. It could even be said that the characters in the novel become imprisoned
by their own lives. Marie is barred by her love, which, in the end, leaves her quite literally lifeless.
Alexandra, who initially is so full of life, begins to view her life as unimportant and as a prison house.
Even the spirituality of the pioneers is ever declining and dying away. Ultimately it is Frank who
embodies the idea most obviously; in his youth Frank lives the life of a happy, handsome man, yet his
life ends in utter despondence and literal imprisonment. How is it that all of these things can be
drained of life while the American land is thriving with it? One could see the relationship between the
land and the people that live on it as the American dream and those who live that dream. Invariably,
the people who contribute to the flourishing of the land also contribute to the fallowness of their own
life, just as those who indulge in the American Dream lose not only themselves, but their own dreams
to it. Marie s case is a tragic one. Maries love for her husband begins strong; she is madly in love with
him, but the labor that he puts into the land changes him into a hard man which she can no longer
love. It is the land, the great American dream, that changes Frank and it is the land, which strips Marie
of all love for him. When she falls in love with Emil,

Molar Lab Experiment
Formal Lab Report
Molar Mass Determination by Freezing Point Depression
By: Taylor Williams
Lab Partner: Andrew Hall
CHE 115 02
September 28, 2017
Introduction
The purpose of this experiment is to learn concepts that explain the effect of solutes on the properties
of liquids and to determine the molar mass of an unknown substance by using freezing points
determined by a digital temperature probe. The molar mass of the unknown substance will be
determined by measuring the freezing point of the lauric acid and lauric acid mixed with an unknown
solute, then plugging those results into the freezing point depression equation (∆T = i*Kf*m). This
equation will solve for the molality, number of moles, and the molecular weight of an unknown solute.
The unknown substance will ultimately be determined based on matching the calculated molecular
weight to the possible substance s molecular weights.
The basic methods of this lab involves setting up a water bath, placing the lauric acid in a flask to
melt, then observing the temperature until it maintains a steady state. Once the correct information is
obtained, the freezing point depression equations can be used to determine the molecular weight of an
unknown substance. According to the General Chemistry Laboratory II notebook, The freezing point
of a solution relative to that of the pure solvent is influenced by the number of moles of solute present,
and therefore is related to molar mass ( Department of Chemistry and

concept designs that were based on initial feedback provided at the July open house. During this
element, consultants explained in detail the possible options for the park and circulated taking notes of
participant desires, likes and dislikes (IAP2 Public Participation Spectrum, 2007). This element was
very interactive and gave each participant a chance to share his or her thoughts and concerns. The
consultants will be re tweaking new elements into the final concept design and be bringing the

Laertes And Ophelia Character Analysis
The passing of Laertes and Ophelia s mother influences their self esteem and dependency in outside
relationships because it is in these close levels of intimacy that initial unresolved conflicts within the
family are reenacted and initiated subconsciously (Tyson 18). However, both exhibit and perform the
reenactment of their deepest, hidden feelings about their mother s absence in two different and distinct
manners. Furthermore, it is directly verified that when experimented, ...research links parental death to
increased emotional reactions and grief process, which in turn links to commitment levels in romantic
relationships ; therefore, creating a wide variety of emotion backlash on Laertes and Ophelia to find
the one (Anderson 1). When analyzing Laertes liaisons, there are not many secure connections evident
in the play as he is depicted almost as a lone wolf like, strong willed, and predominantly independent
character. Although, Ophelia exposes his lifestyle in Act I, Scene III, by showing the audience a
different side of Laertes after witnessing his so called protective advice to Ophelia:
But, good my brother,
Do not, as some ungracious pastors do,
Show me the steep and thorny way to heaven
Whiles, like a puffed and reckless libertine,
Himself the primrose path of dalliance treads
And recks not his own rede. (50 55)
Ophelia s words prove that there more exists within Laertes under the surface than a concerned
brother for his sister s heart and virtue. In

John Calvin
Shyann Metcalf
Intro to Judaeo
John Calvin
26 April, 2016 During the Protestant Reformation, there was one man who was in control of it all.
Born in Noyon, Picardy, France on July 10, 1509, Jon Calvin was known as the most important figure
in the second generation of the Protestant Reformation. Calvin played a huge part in the spread of
Protestantism and Christianity throughout Scotland, England and the Netherlands. Although this might
have been good for his reputation throughout the Christian community, he did a few questionable
things that lead those of other religions to hate him and what he stood for. By 1528, Calvin received
his masters for the arts at College de la Marche in Paris. But instead of moving further with studying
literature, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This means that humanity is totally deprived because of Adam and Eve s relationship with God.
Although it was good and carefree in the beginning, it was severed by sin when they ate the forbidden
fruit which affected the entire human race. By corrupting the heart, mind and will of everyone,
everything naturally done by man, good or bad, was never pleasing to God because that trust was
gone. Calvinists believe that no matter how good man does, there will always be something God will
not favor. The second and third part of TULIP are unconditional election and limited atonement.
Unconditional election is when God chooses who he wants to grace with his knowledge based solely
on the council of his own will. Limited atonement states that Christ didn t die for all, but for those
who would rightly bear the name Christian as their religion and for those who were graced by God.
These two beliefs go hand in hand because they both state that in order to be graced by God, there will
be things given to them that they will always cherish such a s being a Christian and being saved by

Unequal Distribution of Wealth Essay
First and foremost, Adam Smith was very conscious of how the wealth was unequally distributed
amongst the poor versus the wealthy, and how and if this distribution continued it would leave the
poor at a disadvantage, in the sense they will never have the opportunity to move ahead and will
always be at the mercy of those who possessed more wealth. Mr. Smith viewed economics contrarily
than the mercantilist. Compared to the days of old, the views of economics and mercantilism based
wealth on the amount of gold and silver the nation provided, and how the import of goods from other
countries would adversely affect the wealth of a country, as the reality was, trade was notably one
sided, it only benefited the seller and not the buyer, and it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Smith s invisible hand most certainly distributed wealth unequally. His belief; was derived by the
thought of unequal distribution of wealth was necessary, in order for the nation to function as it
should. He felt that if wealth was regulated in any kind of way, people wouldn t have a reason to want
to learn, seek new opportunities or open new businesses if there was a set amount of wealth. It has
been proven Adam Smith at times would contradict himself, it didn t mean he didn t know what he
was talking about, it simply meant he was desperate to find everyone a better way of life, this is an
every growing problem even in today s society, trying to keep a balance between classes without
harming one economic class versus another. (Smith, 1776).
Adam Smith s beliefs of inequality always was a point of discussion, he may have had a different type
of delivery but nevertheless the message was always the same. As we compare Adam Smith s era with
today s period, inequality is on a much larger scale than it ever was in Mr. Smith s days, and the main
reason is because of the growth of Globalization. Mr. Smith s fundamental approach to economic
development and satisfying everyone s wants and needs cannot be considered in today s world. Trying
to make an effort to show how the division of labor would satisfy the basic needs is no longer practical
when we realize that today a great portion of our salaries are going towards health care and housing.

The Concepts of Tradition and Modernity in the Bride Price...
The concepts of tradition and modernity in The Bride Price by Buchi Emecheta.
INTRODUCTION
The concept of tradition versus modernity has been widely explored in the novel entitled Bride Price
by Buchi Emecheta. Every aspect including the setting of the novel, the tribal community that exists,
the characters, the lifestyle which the community adopted and the values that each characters hold
reflects the existence and also the confrontation between tradition and modernity. In this novel, the
author has shown how modernity and its values try to seep into the community of Ibuza, a place where
tradition and customs are strongly uphold by its residents. During the period from 1850 to 1960,
Nigeria has been colonized by the British power ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In terms of sexuality, single men are allowed to have affairs with women before they get married.
Nobody in the community will question them for committing such acts and not only that, boys who
come as suitors to the girl s home are allowed to fondle her breasts and to molest her in any way they
like as it is the custom practiced by the people in Ibuza. In this case, the girl s mother and family are
actually aware of what s happening and they allow for these acts to be committed on the girl. In
contrast, a girl is expected to be a virgin before she is married off to the husband chosen for her and
her blood stains from the consummated marriage is shown to family members as a prove that she was
pure before she got married. However, if she were to have affairs before she is married off to another
family, she would be looked down upon and will be treated even worst than a slave. In Akunna s case,
she claimed that she lost her virginity to Chike, a descendent of a slave, to protect herself from being
mistreated by Okoboshi. But by doing so, she put her own life at risk and even tarnished her own
reputation in her own community. Another instance would be in terms of education. For example,
boys are allowed to further their studies until the highest level as long as their families can afford to do
so. Meanwhile, girls are not as privileged as it is taken for granted that girls are not

Analysis Of 100 Faces Of Death
Death is an inevitable and uncontrollable part of life that can be hard to accept. It can take a lot of time
to fully heal from the death of a loved one, but over time, it is normal to accept the full reality of that
loss (Good Grief: Healing from the Pain of Loss). In 100 Faces of Death , T.C. Boyle sets up the idea
that death is unable to be escaped and can happen unexpectedly by telling the stories of all the deaths
that the main character has experienced. Boyle describes the main character s feelings towards each of
deaths to show the impact they have on his life. The main character has not fully healed from the
deaths that he has experienced, which negatively affects his mental health and causes him to lose
touch with reality. Readers often raise the question, What could have been done to prevent him from
ever feeling this way towards death? His attitude towards death most likely formed because of his
response to death and never reaching acceptance in the grieving process.
People respond to death in many different ways depending on personality, gender, circumstances of
the loss, and support from others (Grief and Loss). Some people may have a prolonged and intense
reaction towards death while other people may heal a lot quicker (Wortman and Boerner). It is normal
to experience different emotions after a death such as, anger, resentment, guilt, fear, or loneliness
(Brand, Fox, and Bosch). Even the main character in 100 Faces of Death felt numb after the third or

Identity And The Identity Of Identity
We live in a world where we are constantly dealing with the question of identity. Here is one of many
definitions of the word Identity from the Merriam Webster dictionary, The relation established by
psychological identification Who am I? What am I doing here? What is my purpose in life? These are
frequently asked questions within the minds of teenagers and young adults. In this day and age, there
have been times where many teens and young adults have tried to find psychologically where they
belong in the world and where they might discover their identity. Some will try to find their identity in
other people, (i.e Celebrities, Singers, etc.) and others will find their identity in what they listen to, or
the movies they watch, and will try to take on those personas. Because in today s society it is easier to
mask who you are, rather than discover what you are capable of. In this discourse we are going to take
a look at some examples of identity, and how we can better understand the meaning of it and how we
can apply it to today.
Issue of Identity #1: In David Hume s Bundle Theory of The Self, he states that there is no fixed self
(or identity) but rather they are all mere perceptions. (Identities) Lust, love, hate, fear, sorrow,
according to Hume these are all mere perceptions that have nothing to do with the idea or impression
of self, but that it is something that we perceive to be feeling. And that we are all made up of
perceptions and each

The annual morning salute by the Concord Independent Battery fired 21 guns for reflection and
commemorate of the event. Continuing with tradition, the Sudbury Militia arrived on schedule at

As much as you would think the park would have been able to rest on it s laurels, April s events did
not end in the afternoon of April 19th. Saturday, the Guild of Historic Interpreters presented their semi
annual evening of theater and history. Battle Road Heroes is a special evening of presenting the stories
of those who lived in 1775 and were involved in the events of 1775, either by choice or fate.

Regulation Fair Disclosure
Summary In this research paper the authors want to express their thoughts by stating that how to them
earnings reporting pertains to the discovery of information that has not been disclosed by either people
or other types of sources and focus towards the negative in this study. In my opinion, the title of the
paper itself could have had a different title only because throughout the paper it analyzes negative or
bad news rather than really paying attention to both perspectives. Also the paper captures the
information or news that occurs by using a three day window in which Quarterly Earnings
Announcement (QEA) take place and compares it to a period where it does not take place.
Furthermore, in this paper there are three hypotheses that arise ... Show more content on

My recommendation would be to sample years that are passed 2002 and on to get a more accurate
result for the study. I felt like there was so much going on with testing before and after the events took
into effect. Even though it was a good size of sample and enough quarters from where to gather
information from the time frame plays an important role. The Regulation Fair Disclosure that took
place in October 23, 2000 made a great impact towards the way information was not allowed to be
disclosed. I feel that it took an effect on the results since the information was gathered that year and
was dealing with information asymmetry. In Li, Ha and Nabar (2014) they conclude that there is a
difference that exists between pre and post regulation fair disclosure. The authors mention how the
stock prices after the fact were more precise in relation to stock splits than before regulation fair
disclosure took place. Also, with Sarbanes Oxley Act taking effect in 2002 could also have more
managers disclosing information more voluntarily than before it took effect. In Aftermath (2015) he
states that SOX arose because of the number of scandals that had taken place. So, with this said it
shows how the disclosing of information is important and now that it is implemented will help in
lowering the risk of having unreliable information. On another note as for the equations that were used
throughout the paper I find them quite interesting and understandable. As well as the variables that
were used in the tables are clearly defined and the tables do provide evidence to sustain their

Emotions And Risks Perception Of Emotions
Emotions and risks perception The concept of affect, emotions, moods In psychology, emotions and
moods are phenomena that have been grouped under the umbrella term affect (Hosany Gilbert, 2010).
Affect is a term used to define good or bad as a feeling state initiated by a positive or negative
stimulus that is consciously or unconsciously experienced (Peters, Burraston, Mertz, 2004; Slovic
Peters, 2006). However, moods and emotions are two distinct affective states that differ in intensity

multitude of stimuli (Gardner, 1985). For example, a person who reads an article in the newspaper
about the drop in fuel prices will start the day in a good mood as this implies money savings next time
at the gas station. However, this positive mood can easily disappear and be replaced by a negative
mood when the ride to work lengthens due to road traffic. In contrast, emotions are intense feelings
that are associated with specific stimuli that trigger specific behavioural responses (Cohen Areni,
1991; Hosany Prayag, 2013). For example, a person who receives a raise at work will experience
feelings of joy and happiness leading to more dedication in the work place. Similarly, a person who
waits 45 minutes at a restaurant to dine will feel disappointment and frustration and may decide to
choose a different restaurant. Beside their aforementioned differences, feelings

Essay on Criminology
Figuring out why people commit crimes is one of the central concerns of criminology. Do most
criminals act rationally after weighing the costs of crime? Is society ever to blame for an individual to
commit a crime? Do mental diseases or even genetics factor into whether a person will live a life of
crime. Over the years, many people have developed theories to try to answer these questions. In fact,
the number of theories of why people commit crimes sometimes seems to equal the number of
criminologists. I explore these questions and much more in the paper that follow.
The foundation of classical criminology is its central belief that individual criminals engage in a
process of rational decision making in choosing how to commit crime ... Show more content on

As a part of this relationship individuals gave up some of their liberties in the interest of the common
good, with the purpose of the law being to ensure that these common interests were met. For Beccaria,
this meant that the law should be limited and written down so that people could make decisions on
how to behave. More importantly, punishment was to fit the crime not the individual and was to be
certain and swift (Williams McShane, 2010). Offenders were to be seen as reasonable people with the
same capacity for resisting offending behavior as non offenders. The guiding principle of the criminal
justice process was the presumption of innocence; and in this general framework punishment was to
be seen as a deterrent to criminal behavior. The central concern of the law and the criminal justice
process was therefore the prevention of crime through this deterrent function.
Bentham s concern was upon utilitarianism which assumes the greatest happiness for the greatest
numbers. He believes that individuals weigh the probabilities of present and future pleasures against
those of present and future pain (Postema, 1998).
It should be noted however that the classical school of thought has had an enduring influence as many
legal systems are built on some of its key precepts. The idea of intent for example, emphasizes the
importance of the state of mind of the individual and their capacity for making choices. Notions of
proportionality in relation to punishment are

The Three Major Themes In Modern History
Three major themes stand out when analyzing modern history through the scope of this course. The
first of these is a theme of leadership and how leaders influence the direction of their people. The
theme of leadership is supported by focusing on the aspects of war, popular support, and government.
The second theme is enlightenment ideas and how they are expressed across the world and across
different time periods. Major Enlightenment ideas include liberalism, secularism, and morality. The
focus of the third theme is economics and how strongly a civilization s economy influences their level
of success. The main aspects of economics in modern history are industrialization, military, and trade.
Leadership has contributed largely to the direction ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Secularism s goal is to vacate government involvement in their subjects faith or religion. A great
contributor to the scientific advancements of the period, Isaac Newton, chose to believe that science
and God are not in conflict with each other. However, many people of the time, primarily the Catholic
Church and other conservative groups, believed government should ensure proper religious values,
and they saw this increased attention to science as a force that weakens faith. A separate branch related
to secularism is deductive reasoning. Championed by Rene Descartes, deductive reasoning became a
powerful incentive to decrease society s reliance on government to control their thoughts. People
groups began to drift away from their reliance on their religion, and instead determining their own
morals through

How to get to Heaven according to Kant Essay
When man dies where does he go? This is a question humanity has been pondering over since the
beginning of time. Deep within humanity s being mankind as the ability of reason. Reason explains
that this world is not the end of everything. Man cannot fathom the concept of ceasing to exist.
Therefore over the years countless people have come up with ideas to life after death. Christianity
calls it salvation. Buddhism calls it enlightenment. But no matter what the name is, it all deals with
what follows death. Mankind desires to know how to be well pleasing before God. Immanuel Kant
attempts to tackle this question in his book, Religion within the Limits of Reason Alone. Kant wants to
take faith and emotion out of the picture and use pure ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Kant God created mankind for good; not necessarily that man is good. He is created for
good and the original predisposition in man is good; not that, thereby, he is already actually good
(Kant 40). The previous statement could be taken in many ways. But perhaps what Kant is saying here
is that man is to become good to the best of man s ability in this life. God s plan is for man to pursue
good.
Kant establishes in Book I that man has a tendency towards evil. Kant explains, Man is evil, can mean
only, He is conscious of the moral law but has nevertheless adopted into his maxim the deviation
therefrom (27). Therefore man knows right from wrong and at times intentionally chooses wrong.
Through reason man can establish what is good and what is bad; consequently man has no excuse
when choosing evil. So if humans know what is the correct thing to do, why is not the right thing
always the first choice? What is the cause of this evil? Humans choose evil through self love. When
one cannot see past his own desires he will inevitably choose what is wrong. Self love is the incentive
that turns ones disposition toward evil. Self love thus becomes the priority over moral law, Man is evil
only in that he reverses the moral order of the incentives when he adopts

Littering On College Campuses
Students littering is the main issue among many schools nowadays. Littering and other food wastes
are hazardous to the campus environment as well as to the society. The problem in the community is
the littering is being done around the school campuses. As one can notice cigarettes butts are
everywhere we see around us, littering might seem harmless to some people, hence bad for others and
sometimes can be very dangerous for the living species around everyone. Students these days do not
care about their individual responsibilities as their priority. They should attain their responsibility as
an adult and should try to solve this problem. There are many resources that can be applied to fix this
problem. The most obvious solution to the littering ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is very typical problem for students all the time. Students don t think there are enough garbage
cans on campus, because people walk few step without noticing a trash can or recycling bin, they will
throw their trash on the ground. Even though trash cans are nearby sometimes, people choose not to
walk by and throw their trash away. I have experienced this before and even I have also done it. This
can relate to lazy people as well who leave their trash behind instead of wrapping after finishing work
and throwing it away. These type of behaviors and habits can sometimes come from their upbringings.
Habits can shape the personality of the person, also many characteristics of the person are emulated
from its behavior and things they do. Children learn everything by looking and observing activities
that happen surround them. So, if a child were raised by a very unmannered and careless family then
the outcomes are obviously going to be worst, those children cannot change after they are teens or
adult, they will remain same as well as their habits and behavior. Therefore; parents should develop
some good habits for their kids when they are

Atonement Research Paper
Worship and sin cannot coexist. For example, before the fall, Adam and Eve did not need to acquire
atonement to worship God, but instead lived in the Garden of Eden with Him. The Temple and
Tabernacle were the places where man encountered God, so they served as vital religious components
of Judaism. In addition to atonement, tabernacle and temple, further elements of Old Testament
worship include scripture, singing, and covenant renewal/remembrance. This essay will go over Old
Testament worship practices and the significance of these practices. Atonement is the physical ritual
conveying a sentiment of repentance. In the Old Testament, atonement was the method used in order
to attain purity and restore relationship with God and the community of believers through a sacrificial
statement. We see this demonstrated in time of the creation and fall, the patriarchs, the
exodus/law/conquest, the kings, and the post exile (Lecture 1, 2016). There are numerous types of
sacrifices that can be found in Leviticus: burnt offering (1:3 17), associated cereal offerings (2:1 16),
peace offerings (3:1 17), sin offering (4:1 5:13) and guilt offering (5:14 6:7) (Peterson, 1993, p.38).
The sacrificial system in the Old Testament to atone for unintentionally and intentionally committed
sins and social failures that caused Israelites to become unclean so that they can once again join the
worshipping community of God (Leviticus 4:20; 5:16 18). These sacrifices acted in some cases as

History Of The Topographical Engineers
The history of the Topographical Engineers defines and highlights many changes in the Army over the
years. The resources and assets provided over the years has changed in some dynamics. Engineers
have always and will always provide many needed skill sets. Engineers have been the driving force
through the years for the military. It has been the engineers that provided an unexplained amount of
capabilities to the battlefield. Those capabilities were not just limited to war though. The contributions
of the engineers have been used on the civil side during times of peace as well. The engineers have
always provided an ever evolving skill that is in broad use in multiple ways. Topographical Engineers
saw many changes in the early years leading to the engineers of today. Those changes have in no way
changed the mission set forth in the beginning by the Topographical Engineers, to the current mission
of the Corp of Engineers today. In all those changes and restructure engineers still and will always be
one of the greatest assets the Army has at its disposal.
Origin of the Topographical Engineers The history of the engineers dates all the way back to the
Continental Army in 1775. During this time it was determined by the Continental Congress that there
would be three positions. The first of the three positions would be the Chief Engineer along with two
assistant engineers. This would the start to the Corps of Engineers. It was not until 1812 during the
war that the first

Strawberry Girl Vs American Folk Art Analysis
The main difference between both of these artworks is that one is a photograph, while the others is a
painting. The artistic styles are strikingly different, the ambrotype is a positive photograph on a piece
of glass, while The Strawberry Girl takes on a more abstract approach. In American Folk art, visual
realism was not that important. the girl s form seems to be anatomically incorrect and simplified. The
body is flattened and stiff looking compared to the photograph, which is a photo of a real little girl.
The process of creating both works is also different. The ambrotype probably was complicated to
create since, photographers ha to use different chemical and processes to achieve the final product.

1. Compare Allport s criteria for mental health to each of the following theorists and theories:
a. Freud s Psychodynamic Theory of Personality
b. Rogers s Person Centered Theory of Personality
c. Cattell s Factor Analytic Trait Theory of Personality
According to Allport, an individual s personality is genetically determined, and formed by his
environment and experience. In order to have psychological maturity, an individual has to have a well
developed proprium and a copious set of adjustable dispositions, (Boeree, 2006).
According to Freud s psychodynamic theory development of personality depends on the interaction of
instincts and the environment during early years of childhood of an individual (first five years).
Behavior of parents is a key element to determine normal and abnormal development. Personality
problems and mental health in adulthood can usually be tracked back from the first five years of life,

Justice John T. Clarke s Views On Judicial Appointments...
Unlike the other branches of government, the Constitution is largely silent on judicial qualifications
and the nomination process of judicial appointments other than stating that justices should exhibit
good behavior and are confirmed with the advice and consent of the Senate. Thus, tradition largely
dictates judicial nominations and the nomination processes that follow. The need for a judicial
appointment can occur when a sitting justice dies in office, choses to retire because of old age or for
disability reasons. Clare Cushman in Courtwatchers provides examples of other justices in the past
resigning to pursue other political ambitions. During the nineteenth century, some justices had no
qualms about campaigning for political office, either secretly or openly, while still on the bench (pg.
229). Chief Justice John Jay is a prominent example of political ambitions when he was elected
governor of New York. Others have stepped down to pursue peace like Justice John H. Clarke did
when left in 1922 to lobby the United States to join the League of Nations. When a judicial vacancy
occurs, the Presidents and their advisors consider factors such as: geographical, religious, racial, or
gender representation a candidate would bring to the Court, political ideology, qualifications, and
whether the nominee would change the ideological balance of the court among others. Of these
factors, political ideology is the most important factor during the nomination and confirmation

Essay on Castle of Otranto Preface Analysis
Horace Walpole (1717 1797) invented the Gothic novel in his attempt to blend wildness and
imagination of the old romance, in his own words an attempt to blend the two kinds of romance, the
ancient and the modern in one step altogether, the Castle of Otranto. A novel he claimed to have
written immediately after being inspired by a dream, I waked one morning...from a dream, of which
all I could recover was, that I had thought myself in an ancient castle...I saw a gigantic hand in
armour. In the evening I sat down and began to write (Letter, 9th march 1765). On the other hand
many would more quickly agree that the writing of this novel was a mere `specialized development of

Authenticity was primary because for many years fiction was distrusted. Why would one read a book
that was not true? True stories were more compelling and exciting because they were actual events.
Thus it s a common pose for author, including Walpole, to claim that the storey was true. To do this
Walpole fussed over the date of composition, it was printed ... in the year 1529 (15), the probable
author from the Original Italian of Onuphrio Muralto (title page), that the author s style is purest

The `translator then enforced authority by supplying his own ethos (character and hence credibility)
by way of revealing the characteristics of a careful scholar. He named the place of publication, it was
printed in Naples (15) and noted that the novel was printed in black letter (15) as details that made him
sound like a scholar. The uses of details were indicators of carefulness and factuality. General and
vague accounts were usually deemed unreliable, while specific ones were judged to be more credible
and accurate. Thus, the detailed preface provided both an air of authenticity and a sense of authority
for the supposed translator to the claim for the text.
The eighteenth century readers were told by the first edition that the book was printed in 1529, while
inner evidence in the story might put the writing between

Dominant Economic Characteristics of the Steel Industry Environment
The steel industry worldwide has a huge excess capacity, forcing many companies to operate in red.
An unprecedented number of steel producers have filed for bankruptcy. Among them are Bethlehem
Steel Corporation and LTV, who were the country s third and fourth largest steel producers
respectively. With a lot of world s economies in recession in late nineties, there was a surge in the
import of steel. With unfair subsidies from their governments, foreign steel producers were dumping
steel in the U.S. market at cut rate prices. In 1999, the United States had decided not to impose any
import restrictions.
With 75% capacity utilization, a level too low for many companies, three European companies
decided to merge to form the world s largest steel producer. Two Japanese companies did the same to
form the second largest steel producer. These new mega steelmakers could easily outmuscle their U.S.

The Invention Of The Scientific Revolution
Women in the Scientific Revolution
The scientific revolution is generally considered part of the broader intellectual revolution that began
with the Italian Renaissance and the rediscovery and translation of the classical writers, particularly
Aristotle, sometime during the fourteenth century. It is only in retrospect that one can understand
broad movements, such as this, but one can assert with confidence that the scientific revolution
resulted from a confluence of several factors, most particularly the rejection of the Ptolemaic model of
planetary movement combined with an increased interest in Aristotelian science (Grant, 1996). Thus,
the scientific revolution, insofar as it was a revolution rather than a developing, continuous process,
may be claimed to have begun in 1543 with the publication of Copernicus De revolutionibus orbium
coelestium, though establishing this as a boundary is as much a matter of convenience as anything else
(Linton, 2004). As an intellectual and cultural phenomenon, the scientific revolution continues to the
present, moving through such advances as Newtonian mechanics, the experimental method of
chemistry, advanced in anatomy and medicine, Darwinian evolution, relativity and quantum
mechanics, with myriad offshoots at every stage along the way of this development.
At the present, there is much dispute about how, or whether, the scientific revolution will end: some
think it will continue forever, while others believe it will culminate with

real life context. This qualitative approach is commonly used to explore and understand the meaning
individuals or groups ascribe to a social or human issue (Creswell, 2013). Each teacher interviewed is
a microcosm of the larger case study, as each participant interviewed needs to be understood in order
to truly understand the underlying reasons for adoption, and to understand the larger case, the school
district. Research Questions This study will attempt to answer the following questions: 1. Of the
teachers who have adopted the learning management system (LMS) for teaching and learning, what is
different about those who adopt more quickly than others? 2. How has the learning management
system been incorporated into teaching and learning in the classroom? What were the early successes
or failures that may have influenced the choice to adopt? 3. What have been current steps toward

The Effect Of Divorce On Children
The occurrence on divorce in our society today has left children emotionally and mentally hurt by this.
More and more studies have been done on to see if divorce has an effect on children. I personally have
had no effect of divorce, but I have had several friends who have been affected. I had little knowledge
about how impactful divorce can have an affect on someone until I started doing research on this
topic. Divorce is very hard on people who have to deal with this. The articles I have found to do
research on all have something new and exciting to bring to the table. Of the ones I have found, I
believe they will help me to understand more of the struggles young children have to cope with during
such a difficult time. I also found an interesting article about the fathers perspectives on divorce. It
talked about how they still want to be apart of their children s lives and how hard it is to keep a strong
relationship with their children. I felt like it would be good to include this article into my paper
because it will help me to learn from the fathers side how they handle the situation. Throughout this
paper, I disused the different effects divorce has on children, the various programs and coping
strategies for the children, and fathers perspectives and mother child relationships. All of these topics
are very important to divorce and the articles from the researchers did a great job of talking about
these topics.

Analysis Of The Poem The Crucible Ladies And Gentlemen...
GOOOOOODDDDD AFFTERRRRNOOOONNNNN ladies and gentlemen of the Byron Bay Poetry
Festival Committee. I stand here before you in my corporeal form to inform you of two pieces of
prose on the theme of life and death that are very dear to my heart, I must convince you to include
them in your reading. But, why are we, as mortals, intrigued by life and death? Is it the thought of
staring willingly into the unknown, not knowing when it will end? Or is it the fact that we don t know
what comes after? Is there such thing as a glistening heaven, or do our spirits lay rested in the garden
soil, our bodies rotting beneath the flowers? Well, no matter what it is that makes us so curious about
the circle of life, for billions of years poets have been ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Using a pensive and sorrowful tone, Bronte portrays her sadness for a love cut short by her death, and
her regret that she is forgetting her memories of her lover. Helena complements this with the
emotional lyric My Chemical Romance s singer, Gerard Way, wrote about the painful passing of his
beloved grandmother whilst he was on tour, and how he felt he neglected her due to his travels.
Obviously, as this song was written about his grandmothers passing, the theme is death. This is
supported by the line where it says and like a blade you stain, well I ve been holding on tonight ,
which is a metaphor for how the death of his grandmother has stained his heart, (possibly meaning he
is cut up about her death),he can t forget her nor let go of his guilt for leaving her before she died.
Both Helena and Remembrance complement each other due to the fact that they both speak of a
lifetime terminated too early. The tone of Helena is mournful but angry, perhaps at himself for not
being there when he lost a love one, one could even say fervent and regretful, for example, when he
says you are the very hurt you sold which reflects his hurting and how he was angry towards others
because he was angry with himself, we are so far from you which depicts his realisation that he will
never see his grandmother again, and every star fall brought you to tears again , which tells of how
every little thing that reminded him of her brought him to grief. Both poems

A Comparison Between Computer Programming And Java
A Comparison Between Computer Programming: Java and C++ in games industry 1.Introduction I
chose this topic because these languages are a relationship between programmers and computer
without those languages can t use the computer. Moreover, considered one of the models that I will
study in September at Swansea University. This is why I find this topic so interesting as it given a lot
of detailed information about two programming c++ and java in uses and its founders to explain how
they became so successful and why their programs are so brilliant. I admire the genius of these
successful two programs. Also, as a Mathematics and Computing for Finance student I feel that I
could learn so much from them. So, I shall keep a very close eye on their research and their result. The
purpose of the programming languages as Coded language to write information by programmers that a
computer could understand to do what the programmer wants. A computer language is used binary ( 1
and 0 ) code as call the machine language that a computer can execute instructions quickly without
any translator or interpreter program, but is complicated. The high level languages such as C++ and
java are very simpler for use, but it need to another program to transfer a high level code into a
computer language, for this are slower. There are many of programming languages are being always
developed. The Advanced

Knights Of The White Camellia Essay
As slaves, African Americans were seen as weak, frail, and fragile individuals. Although they were
perceived as powerless, they undoubtedly held all of the power. Afro Americans were not deemed a
threat until the abolishment of slavery in 1865. The 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution
states that Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the
party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, nor any place subject to their
jurisdiction. In Congress, it was passed by the Senate on April 8, 1864, and by the House on January
31, 1865. This transformation in America allowed African Americans a sense of liberation about
themselves. On the contrary, it also instilled a certain fear in White Americans.
White supremacy is the belief that white people are superior to others because of their race. Prior to
the Civil War, racism and white supremacy had been common attitudes in both the North and the
South. After the Emancipation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was a secret organization of white men formed in the lower Southern states in the Reconstruction
period to promote white supremacy. Blacks endured violence and white attempts to keep them as close
as they could in slavery in Florida. The objectives of the Knights of the White Camellia include voting
only for white men, defending the white race from the aggression and encroachment of an inferior
race, and protect females and widows. The main objective was the return of political control to
conservative whites. They used economic intimidation and persuasion to achieve their political
objectives. Another group responsible for white supremacy in the south was The White League. The
White League was a paramilitary group that was allied with the Democratic Party in the South. In
1874 and 1875, the White League was responsible for widespread violence against black and white

Magical Realism in The Garden of Forking Paths Essay
Magical Realism in The Garden of Forking Paths
While there may be some debate as to whether the Argentinian Jorge Luis Borges was technically a
Magical Realist, some may feel that his works definitely do have some of the characteristics of what is
considered Magical Realistic literature. Among his various types of works are poetry, essays,
fantasies, and short fictions. Often referred to in essays that discuss the history and theory of Magical
Realism, The Garden of Forking Paths is probably Borges most popular short story. Published in 1964
in a collection of Borges works entitled Labyrinths: Selected Stories Other Writings, his short story
The Garden of Forking Paths appears to have several of the elements of Magical ... Show more

For example, Yu Tsun had a grandfather who wrote an incomplete novel about labyrinths and who also
tried to construct a labyrinth in which all men would get lost. During his journey, Yu Tsun begins to
ponder over his grandfather s lost labyrinth. Then, he says, I forgot my destiny of one pursued. I felt
myself to be, for an unknown period of time, and abstract perceiver of the world . . . The road
descended and forked among the now confused meadows (Borges 23). As a result of thinking about
the maze, Yu Tsun finds himself trapped in a garden maze at Dr. Albert s house (Wiehe 980). Of
course, being caught in what is seemingly an imaginary maze introduces a magical element into the
story.
Being caught in an imaginary maze serves the purpose of giving the reader a different perspective on
real life. The imaginary maze represents the numerous paths that one can travel and all of the possible
outcomes from these paths. While in real life a person can really only go down one path, the
imagination can venture down all possible paths. Two ways in which this is illustrated in The Garden
of Forking Paths are by the meaning of Yu Tsun s grandfather s novel and by the plot of The Garden of
Forking Paths. When explaining the meaning of the novel by Ts ui Pen, Yu Tsun s grandfather,
Stephen Albert states:
In the work of Ts ui Pen, all possible outcomes occur; each one is the point of departure for other
forkings. Sometimes, the paths of this

The Vegetarian By Han Kang Essay
In The Vegetarian by Han Kang, what appears to be one insubordinate South Korean woman s choice
to not eat meat, becomes a much larger issue revolving around what is normal, and just how far others
should be allowed to impose their own views of reality onto another person s life. Yeong hye s unusual
ways, while strange to the mainstream culture s expectations, present their own rationality in her
mind. She sees it as a way to oppose the violent tendencies of human nature, in order to find her own
peace in life. Kang takes this idea to the farthest extent with the philosophical question, should a
person be allowed to choose to die because their life is just that, their own life? The unique
perspective of this novel comes from a South Korean author, which helps to develop her questions
based a childhood trauma in her country. This tragedy leads to her novel s exploration of the idea of
what is normal, the impossibility of understanding another individual s idea of normal, and is it
rational to commit suicide if it is connected to one s idea of normal. All these questions are connected
through Yeong hye s choice to be a vegetarian, and are presented to the reader to form their own views
throughout the novel. Han Kang was born and raised in South Korea and has incorporated her culture
into her narrative. At the age of nine, Kang was a witness to the Gwangju Massacre (Reynolds). She
stated this event forever changed her life by creating within her the idea of whether a person

Essay On Hyperthermia
Many people have an understanding of what hyperthermia is and the reasons it may occur in an
individual. Hyperthermia occurs when the body s core temperature reaches between 37 38°C due an
inability to dissipate heat. In most cases, the occurrence of hyperthermia can be credited to a known
reason. Examples include being outside in extremely hot temperatures without any cooling mechanism
or vigorous exercise in extreme heat causing the body s temperature to rise. Hyperthermia is
determined by an increase in core temperature at a rate of 1 2°C every five minutes (2, 11). However,
in certain individuals, the use of general anesthesia can cause individuals to suffer from an inherited
disorder known as malignant hyperthermia. When malignant hyperthermia is triggered, individuals are
at risk of hypoxemia, metabolic acidosis, rhabdomyolysis and a quick rise in the person s body
temperature ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The increase in metabolic activity occurs in response to inhalational anesthetics and depolarizing
muscle relaxers, such as succinylcholine, and causes individuals to suffer from muscle rigidity,
hyperthermia, and tissue damage (1, 2). This is an inherited disorder found in humans and swine. If
treatment is not initiated quickly, the individual may die from ventricular fibrillation or, if the situation
is extended, the patient may die from renal failure (1). For treatment, patients are given dantrolene, a
muscle relaxer that prevents the release of calcium. Once dantrolene was widely used as a treatment
for malignant hyperthermia, the mortality rate from the disorder dropped from more than 80% to less
than 7% (1, 5, 6). Overall, the rate at which malignant hyperthermia occurs is between 1:5,000 and
1:75,000 (2). While the physical results of malignant hyperthermia are known, the physiological and
genetic reasons for the disorder are starting to be

What Is The Relationship Between Bill And Bud s Life
There are more than three billion people living on Earth; however, not everyone adores each other. On
the other hand, if people met Bill and Bud, two main characters from The Tender Bar, they would find
them charming. J.R. Moehringer wrote an emotional autobiography about himself and his devastating
life, in The Tender Bar, J.R. walked into a bookstore in an unhabituated mall, and met Bill and Bud,
who changes his life forever. Many youth, teens, and adults would find Bill and Bud likeable, because
the pair of them are smart, optimist, and loving. To begin, Bill and Bud are clever people, which many

simply tells them, it s just too frightening to think about Yale (6). Nonetheless, the pair of them [Bill
and Bud] would not give up on this matter, and instead gave J.R. a piece of advice, fear will be the
fuel for all your success, and the root cause for all you failures, and the underlying dilemma in every
story you tell yourself about yourself (6). When Bud told J.R. the forewarning, that night during
dinner with J.R. mother, he told her, I d decided to apply to Yale, (6), because Bud taught J.R. that
lesson, he applied to Yale and was accepted. With optimistic advice, many readers would find Bill and
Bud a likeable pair. Finally, Bill and Bud are loving people who most people find likeable. They
guided J.R. throughout his broken life, when they first met J.R., he stammered, I was nobody (3) and
Bill and Bud took him under their care like loving fathers. For example, while J.R. worked at a
bookstore, Bill and Bid would supply him with works of literature. He brought the books into the
stockroom and quickly ripped the cover off each one. It seemed to cause him pain, like ripping off a
bandage (4). Bill and Bud suffered though several hard tasks that caused them emotional pain, because
they loved books and thought of it as a miracle. Through this action, Bill and Bud showed their
affection towards J.R... Additionally, in support that Bill and Bud are loving people, they both made

  • 2. Why Did The Inca Created Terraces The Incans were sophisticated farmers. They used very advanced and specialised techniques to grow a huge variety of crops. The Incans created terraces to grow their crops on. They built terraces on the hillsides for two reasons. First to make hillsides flat and second to suit the different altitude requirements of different plants. By building the terraces on the sides of mountains the Incans also enabled their crops to get more sunlight instead of planting in the shaded valleys. The terraces were formed with stone walls and included steps to move from one level to the next. The stone walls prevented erosion. The stone walls were also used as they would heat up during the day and slowly release heat into the soil when temperatures cooled ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Obscene and indecent both have different meanings but are similar in many ways. Obscene material is described as disgusting or repulsive but indecent material is described as being offensive to the public. • 4. The Theme Of Life In O Pioneers ! By Willa Cather It seems that everything in Willa Cather s O Pioneers!, aside from the land, starts out so full of life and ends so utterly devoid of it. It could even be said that the characters in the novel become imprisoned by their own lives. Marie is barred by her love, which, in the end, leaves her quite literally lifeless. Alexandra, who initially is so full of life, begins to view her life as unimportant and as a prison house. Even the spirituality of the pioneers is ever declining and dying away. Ultimately it is Frank who embodies the idea most obviously; in his youth Frank lives the life of a happy, handsome man, yet his life ends in utter despondence and literal imprisonment. How is it that all of these things can be drained of life while the American land is thriving with it? One could see the relationship between the land and the people that live on it as the American dream and those who live that dream. Invariably, the people who contribute to the flourishing of the land also contribute to the fallowness of their own life, just as those who indulge in the American Dream lose not only themselves, but their own dreams to it. Marie s case is a tragic one. Maries love for her husband begins strong; she is madly in love with him, but the labor that he puts into the land changes him into a hard man which she can no longer love. It is the land, the great American dream, that changes Frank and it is the land, which strips Marie of all love for him. When she falls in love with Emil, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Molar Lab Experiment Formal Lab Report Molar Mass Determination by Freezing Point Depression By: Taylor Williams Lab Partner: Andrew Hall CHE 115 02 September 28, 2017 Introduction The purpose of this experiment is to learn concepts that explain the effect of solutes on the properties of liquids and to determine the molar mass of an unknown substance by using freezing points determined by a digital temperature probe. The molar mass of the unknown substance will be determined by measuring the freezing point of the lauric acid and lauric acid mixed with an unknown solute, then plugging those results into the freezing point depression equation (∆T = i*Kf*m). This equation will solve for the molality, number of moles, and the molecular weight of an unknown solute. The unknown substance will ultimately be determined based on matching the calculated molecular weight to the possible substance s molecular weights. The basic methods of this lab involves setting up a water bath, placing the lauric acid in a flask to melt, then observing the temperature until it maintains a steady state. Once the correct information is obtained, the freezing point depression equations can be used to determine the molecular weight of an unknown substance. According to the General Chemistry Laboratory II notebook, The freezing point of a solution relative to that of the pure solvent is influenced by the number of moles of solute present, and therefore is related to molar mass ( Department of Chemistry and ... Born in Noyon, Picardy, France on July 10, 1509, Jon Calvin was known as the most important figure in the second generation of the Protestant Reformation. Calvin played a huge part in the spread of Protestantism and Christianity throughout Scotland, England and the Netherlands. Although this might have been good for his reputation throughout the Christian community, he did a few questionable things that lead those of other religions to hate him and what he stood for. Unequal Distribution of Wealth Essay First and foremost, Adam Smith was very conscious of how the wealth was unequally distributed amongst the poor versus the wealthy, and how and if this distribution continued it would leave the poor at a disadvantage, in the sense they will never have the opportunity to move ahead and will always be at the mercy of those who possessed more wealth. Mr. Smith viewed economics contrarily than the mercantilist. Compared to the days of old, the views of economics and mercantilism based wealth on the amount of gold and silver the nation provided, and how the import of goods from other countries would adversely affect the wealth of a country, as the reality was, trade was notably one sided, it only benefited the seller and not the buyer, and it ... He felt that if wealth was regulated in any kind of way, people wouldn t have a reason to want to learn, seek new opportunities or open new businesses if there was a set amount of wealth. It has been proven Adam Smith at times would contradict himself, it didn t mean he didn t know what he was talking about, it simply meant he was desperate to find everyone a better way of life, this is an every growing problem even in today s society, trying to keep a balance between classes without harming one economic class versus another. (Smith, 1776). Adam Smith s beliefs of inequality always was a point of discussion, he may have had a different type of delivery but nevertheless the message was always the same. As we compare Adam Smith s era with today s period, inequality is on a much larger scale than it ever was in Mr. Smith s days, and the main reason is because of the growth of Globalization. Mr. Smith s fundamental approach to economic development and satisfying everyone s wants and needs cannot be considered in today s world. Nobody in the community will question them for committing such acts and not only that, boys who come as suitors to the girl s home are allowed to fondle her breasts and to molest her in any way they like as it is the custom practiced by the people in Ibuza. In this case, the girl s mother and family are actually aware of what s happening and they allow for these acts to be committed on the girl. In contrast, a girl is expected to be a virgin before she is married off to the husband chosen for her and her blood stains from the consummated marriage is shown to family members as a prove that she was pure before she got married. It can take a lot of time to fully heal from the death of a loved one, but over time, it is normal to accept the full reality of that loss (Good Grief: Healing from the Pain of Loss). In 100 Faces of Death , T.C. Boyle sets up the idea that death is unable to be escaped and can happen unexpectedly by telling the stories of all the deaths that the main character has experienced. Boyle describes the main character s feelings towards each of deaths to show the impact they have on his life. The main character has not fully healed from the deaths that he has experienced, which negatively affects his mental health and causes him to lose touch with reality. Readers often raise the question, What could have been done to prevent him from ever feeling this way towards death? His attitude towards death most likely formed because of his response to death and never reaching acceptance in the grieving process. People respond to death in many different ways depending on personality, gender, circumstances of the loss, and support from others (Grief and Loss). Some people may have a prolonged and intense reaction towards death while other people may heal a lot quicker (Wortman and Boerner). Here is one of many definitions of the word Identity from the Merriam Webster dictionary, The relation established by psychological identification Who am I? What am I doing here? What is my purpose in life? These are frequently asked questions within the minds of teenagers and young adults. In this day and age, there have been times where many teens and young adults have tried to find psychologically where they belong in the world and where they might discover their identity. Some will try to find their identity in other people, (i.e Celebrities, Singers, etc.) and others will find their identity in what they listen to, or the movies they watch, and will try to take on those personas. The Regulation Fair Disclosure that took place in October 23, 2000 made a great impact towards the way information was not allowed to be disclosed. I feel that it took an effect on the results since the information was gathered that year and was dealing with information asymmetry. In Li, Ha and Nabar (2014) they conclude that there is a difference that exists between pre and post regulation fair disclosure. The authors mention how the stock prices after the fact were more precise in relation to stock splits than before regulation fair disclosure took place. • 21. Emotions And Risks Perception Of Emotions Emotions and risks perception The concept of affect, emotions, moods In psychology, emotions and moods are phenomena that have been grouped under the umbrella term affect (Hosany Gilbert, 2010). Affect is a term used to define good or bad as a feeling state initiated by a positive or negative stimulus that is consciously or unconsciously experienced (Peters, Burraston, Mertz, 2004; Slovic Peters, 2006). However, moods and emotions are two distinct affective states that differ in intensity (Cohen Areni, 1991). Moods are mild, transient and pervasive feeling states that can be caused by a multitude of stimuli (Gardner, 1985). For example, a person who reads an article in the newspaper about the drop in fuel prices will start the day in a good mood as this implies money savings next time at the gas station. However, this positive mood can easily disappear and be replaced by a negative mood when the ride to work lengthens due to road traffic. In contrast, emotions are intense feelings that are associated with specific stimuli that trigger specific behavioural responses (Cohen Areni, 1991; Hosany Prayag, 2013). For example, a person who receives a raise at work will experience feelings of joy and happiness leading to more dedication in the work place. Similarly, a person who waits 45 minutes at a restaurant to dine will feel disappointment and frustration and may decide to choose a different restaurant. Over the years, many people have developed theories to try to answer these questions. In fact, the number of theories of why people commit crimes sometimes seems to equal the number of criminologists. I explore these questions and much more in the paper that follow. More importantly, punishment was to fit the crime not the individual and was to be certain and swift (Williams McShane, 2010). Offenders were to be seen as reasonable people with the same capacity for resisting offending behavior as non offenders. The guiding principle of the criminal justice process was the presumption of innocence; and in this general framework punishment was to be seen as a deterrent to criminal behavior. The central concern of the law and the criminal justice process was therefore the prevention of crime through this deterrent function. Bentham s concern was upon utilitarianism which assumes the greatest happiness for the greatest numbers. However, many people of the time, primarily the Catholic Church and other conservative groups, believed government should ensure proper religious values, and they saw this increased attention to science as a force that weakens faith. A separate branch related to secularism is deductive reasoning. Championed by Rene Descartes, deductive reasoning became a powerful incentive to decrease society s reliance on government to control their thoughts. People groups began to drift away from their reliance on their religion, and instead determining their own morals through ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 24. How to get to Heaven according to Kant Essay When man dies where does he go? This is a question humanity has been pondering over since the beginning of time. Deep within humanity s being mankind as the ability of reason. Reason explains that this world is not the end of everything. Man cannot fathom the concept of ceasing to exist. Therefore over the years countless people have come up with ideas to life after death. Christianity calls it salvation. Buddhism calls it enlightenment. But no matter what the name is, it all deals with what follows death. Mankind desires to know how to be well pleasing before God. Immanuel Kant attempts to tackle this question in his book, Religion within the Limits of Reason Alone. Kant wants to take faith and emotion out of the picture and use pure ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Kant God created mankind for good; not necessarily that man is good. He is created for good and the original predisposition in man is good; not that, thereby, he is already actually good (Kant 40). The previous statement could be taken in many ways. But perhaps what Kant is saying here is that man is to become good to the best of man s ability in this life. God s plan is for man to pursue good. Kant establishes in Book I that man has a tendency towards evil. Kant explains, Man is evil, can mean only, He is conscious of the moral law but has nevertheless adopted into his maxim the deviation therefrom (27). Therefore man knows right from wrong and at times intentionally chooses wrong. Through reason man can establish what is good and what is bad; consequently man has no excuse when choosing evil. So if humans know what is the correct thing to do, why is not the right thing always the first choice? What is the cause of this evil? Humans choose evil through self love. When one cannot see past his own desires he will inevitably choose what is wrong. Self love is the incentive that turns ones disposition toward evil. Self love thus becomes the priority over moral law, Man is evil only in that he reverses the moral order of the incentives when he adopts ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This can relate to lazy people as well who leave their trash behind instead of wrapping after finishing work and throwing it away. These type of behaviors and habits can sometimes come from their upbringings. Habits can shape the personality of the person, also many characteristics of the person are emulated from its behavior and things they do. • 28. Atonement Research Paper Worship and sin cannot coexist. For example, before the fall, Adam and Eve did not need to acquire atonement to worship God, but instead lived in the Garden of Eden with Him. The Temple and Tabernacle were the places where man encountered God, so they served as vital religious components of Judaism. In addition to atonement, tabernacle and temple, further elements of Old Testament worship include scripture, singing, and covenant renewal/remembrance. This essay will go over Old Testament worship practices and the significance of these practices. Atonement is the physical ritual conveying a sentiment of repentance. In the Old Testament, atonement was the method used in order to attain purity and restore relationship with God and the community of believers through a sacrificial statement. We see this demonstrated in time of the creation and fall, the patriarchs, the exodus/law/conquest, the kings, and the post exile (Lecture 1, 2016). There are numerous types of sacrifices that can be found in Leviticus: burnt offering (1:3 17), associated cereal offerings (2:1 16), peace offerings (3:1 17), sin offering (4:1 5:13) and guilt offering (5:14 6:7) (Peterson, 1993, p.38). The sacrificial system in the Old Testament to atone for unintentionally and intentionally committed sins and social failures that caused Israelites to become unclean so that they can once again join the worshipping community of God (Leviticus 4:20; 5:16 18). • 36. Justice John T. Clarke s Views On Judicial Appointments... Unlike the other branches of government, the Constitution is largely silent on judicial qualifications and the nomination process of judicial appointments other than stating that justices should exhibit good behavior and are confirmed with the advice and consent of the Senate. Thus, tradition largely dictates judicial nominations and the nomination processes that follow. The need for a judicial appointment can occur when a sitting justice dies in office, choses to retire because of old age or for disability reasons. Clare Cushman in Courtwatchers provides examples of other justices in the past resigning to pursue other political ambitions. During the nineteenth century, some justices had no qualms about campaigning for political office, either secretly or openly, while still on the bench (pg. 229). Chief Justice John Jay is a prominent example of political ambitions when he was elected governor of New York. Others have stepped down to pursue peace like Justice John H. Clarke did when left in 1922 to lobby the United States to join the League of Nations. When a judicial vacancy occurs, the Presidents and their advisors consider factors such as: geographical, religious, racial, or gender representation a candidate would bring to the Court, political ideology, qualifications, and whether the nominee would change the ideological balance of the court among others. Of these factors, political ideology is the most important factor during the nomination and confirmation ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A novel he claimed to have written immediately after being inspired by a dream, I waked one morning...from a dream, of which all I could recover was, that I had thought myself in an ancient castle...I saw a gigantic hand in armour. • 39. The Invention Of The Scientific Revolution Women in the Scientific Revolution The scientific revolution is generally considered part of the broader intellectual revolution that began with the Italian Renaissance and the rediscovery and translation of the classical writers, particularly Aristotle, sometime during the fourteenth century. It is only in retrospect that one can understand broad movements, such as this, but one can assert with confidence that the scientific revolution resulted from a confluence of several factors, most particularly the rejection of the Ptolemaic model of planetary movement combined with an increased interest in Aristotelian science (Grant, 1996). Thus, the scientific revolution, insofar as it was a revolution rather than a developing, continuous process, may be claimed to have begun in 1543 with the publication of Copernicus De revolutionibus orbium coelestium, though establishing this as a boundary is as much a matter of convenience as anything else (Linton, 2004). As an intellectual and cultural phenomenon, the scientific revolution continues to the present, moving through such advances as Newtonian mechanics, the experimental method of chemistry, advanced in anatomy and medicine, Darwinian evolution, relativity and quantum mechanics, with myriad offshoots at every stage along the way of this development. Using a pensive and sorrowful tone, Bronte portrays her sadness for a love cut short by her death, and her regret that she is forgetting her memories of her lover. Helena complements this with the emotional lyric My Chemical Romance s singer, Gerard Way, wrote about the painful passing of his beloved grandmother whilst he was on tour, and how he felt he neglected her due to his travels. Obviously, as this song was written about his grandmothers passing, the theme is death. This is supported by the line where it says and like a blade you stain, well I ve been holding on tonight , which is a metaphor for how the death of his grandmother has stained his heart, (possibly meaning he is cut up about her death),he can t forget her nor let go of his guilt for leaving her before she died. Both Helena and Remembrance complement each other due to the fact that they both speak of a lifetime terminated too early. The tone of Helena is mournful but angry, perhaps at himself for not being there when he lost a love one, one could even say fervent and regretful, for example, when he says you are the very hurt you sold which reflects his hurting and how he was angry towards others because he was angry with himself, we are so far from you which depicts his realisation that he will never see his grandmother again, and every star fall brought you to tears again , which tells of how every little thing that reminded him of her brought him to grief. I admire the genius of these successful two programs. Also, as a Mathematics and Computing for Finance student I feel that I could learn so much from them. So, I shall keep a very close eye on their research and their result. The purpose of the programming languages as Coded language to write information by programmers that a computer could understand to do what the programmer wants. A computer language is used binary ( 1 and 0 ) code as call the machine language that a computer can execute instructions quickly without any translator or interpreter program, but is complicated. The high level languages such as C++ and java are very simpler for use, but it need to another program to transfer a high level code into a computer language, for this are slower. • 45. Knights Of The White Camellia Essay As slaves, African Americans were seen as weak, frail, and fragile individuals. Although they were perceived as powerless, they undoubtedly held all of the power. Afro Americans were not deemed a threat until the abolishment of slavery in 1865. The 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution states that Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, nor any place subject to their jurisdiction. In Congress, it was passed by the Senate on April 8, 1864, and by the House on January 31, 1865. This transformation in America allowed African Americans a sense of liberation about themselves. On the contrary, it also instilled a certain fear in White Americans. White supremacy is the belief that white people are superior to others because of their race. It was a secret organization of white men formed in the lower Southern states in the Reconstruction period to promote white supremacy. Blacks endured violence and white attempts to keep them as close as they could in slavery in Florida. The objectives of the Knights of the White Camellia include voting only for white men, defending the white race from the aggression and encroachment of an inferior race, and protect females and widows. The main objective was the return of political control to conservative whites. They used economic intimidation and persuasion to achieve their political objectives. Another group responsible for white supremacy in the south was The White League. The White League was a paramilitary group that was allied with the Democratic Party in the South. • 46. Magical Realism in The Garden of Forking Paths Essay Magical Realism in The Garden of Forking Paths While there may be some debate as to whether the Argentinian Jorge Luis Borges was technically a Magical Realist, some may feel that his works definitely do have some of the characteristics of what is considered Magical Realistic literature. Among his various types of works are poetry, essays, fantasies, and short fictions. Often referred to in essays that discuss the history and theory of Magical Realism, The Garden of Forking Paths is probably Borges most popular short story. Published in 1964 in a collection of Borges works entitled Labyrinths: Selected Stories Other Writings, his short story The Garden of Forking Paths appears to have several of the elements of Magical ... For example, Yu Tsun had a grandfather who wrote an incomplete novel about labyrinths and who also tried to construct a labyrinth in which all men would get lost. During his journey, Yu Tsun begins to ponder over his grandfather s lost labyrinth. Then, he says, I forgot my destiny of one pursued. I felt myself to be, for an unknown period of time, and abstract perceiver of the world . . . The road descended and forked among the now confused meadows (Borges 23). As a result of thinking about the maze, Yu Tsun finds himself trapped in a garden maze at Dr. Albert s house (Wiehe 980). Of course, being caught in what is seemingly an imaginary maze introduces a magical element into the story. Being caught in an imaginary maze serves the purpose of giving the reader a different perspective on real life. The imaginary maze represents the numerous paths that one can travel and all of the possible outcomes from these paths. While in real life a person can really only go down one path, the imagination can venture down all possible paths. Two ways in which this is illustrated in The Garden of Forking Paths are by the meaning of Yu Tsun s grandfather s novel and by the plot of The Garden of Forking Paths. When explaining the meaning of the novel by Ts ui Pen, Yu Tsun s grandfather, Stephen Albert states: In the work of Ts ui Pen, all possible outcomes occur; each one is the point of departure for other forkings. Sometimes, the paths of this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 47. The Vegetarian By Han Kang Essay In The Vegetarian by Han Kang, what appears to be one insubordinate South Korean woman s choice to not eat meat, becomes a much larger issue revolving around what is normal, and just how far others should be allowed to impose their own views of reality onto another person s life. Yeong hye s unusual ways, while strange to the mainstream culture s expectations, present their own rationality in her mind. She sees it as a way to oppose the violent tendencies of human nature, in order to find her own peace in life. Kang takes this idea to the farthest extent with the philosophical question, should a person be allowed to choose to die because their life is just that, their own life? The unique perspective of this novel comes from a South Korean author, which helps to develop her questions based a childhood trauma in her country. This tragedy leads to her novel s exploration of the idea of what is normal, the impossibility of understanding another individual s idea of normal, and is it rational to commit suicide if it is connected to one s idea of normal. All these questions are connected through Yeong hye s choice to be a vegetarian, and are presented to the reader to form their own views throughout the novel. Han Kang was born and raised in South Korea and has incorporated her culture into her narrative. At the age of nine, Kang was a witness to the Gwangju Massacre (Reynolds). • 48. Essay On Hyperthermia Many people have an understanding of what hyperthermia is and the reasons it may occur in an individual. Hyperthermia occurs when the body s core temperature reaches between 37 38°C due an inability to dissipate heat. In most cases, the occurrence of hyperthermia can be credited to a known reason. Examples include being outside in extremely hot temperatures without any cooling mechanism or vigorous exercise in extreme heat causing the body s temperature to rise. Hyperthermia is determined by an increase in core temperature at a rate of 1 2°C every five minutes (2, 11). However, in certain individuals, the use of general anesthesia can cause individuals to suffer from an inherited disorder known as malignant hyperthermia. When malignant hyperthermia is triggered, individuals are at risk of hypoxemia, metabolic acidosis, rhabdomyolysis and a quick rise in the person s body temperature ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The increase in metabolic activity occurs in response to inhalational anesthetics and depolarizing muscle relaxers, such as succinylcholine, and causes individuals to suffer from muscle rigidity, hyperthermia, and tissue damage (1, 2). This is an inherited disorder found in humans and swine. If treatment is not initiated quickly, the individual may die from ventricular fibrillation or, if the situation is extended, the patient may die from renal failure (1). For treatment, patients are given dantrolene, a muscle relaxer that prevents the release of calcium. Once dantrolene was widely used as a treatment for malignant hyperthermia, the mortality rate from the disorder dropped from more than 80% to less than 7% (1, 5, 6). Overall, the rate at which malignant hyperthermia occurs is between 1:5,000 and 1:75,000 (2). While the physical results of malignant hyperthermia are known, the physiological and genetic reasons for the disorder are starting to be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
