No Child Left Behind Argumentative Essay
Four words drove me into retirement No Child Left Behind. I could no longer attend to the needs and
wants of my students. All I was supposed to do was get them ready to take tests (Steve Eklund). Steve
Eklund, a schoolteacher in California, states this claim when asked his opinion on No Child Left
Behind by Education Votes, a page run by the National Education Association. Through this, he shows
his complete disapproval of the act and expresses just one of the reasons that many see it as a burden
to American education. Beginning in 2001, George W. Bush declared to the American people that it
was time to make a change in the American education system. The idea was dubbed No Child Left
Behind. The bill was later signed into law on January ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The act was made to follow up Lyndon B. Johnson s Elementary and Secondary Education Act, which
was created on April 9th, 1965. However, the No Child Left Behind act twisted itself to negatively
influence the American education system by implementing inane standards and learning targets that do
not measure actual learning.
One overlying problem seen is within the testing that takes place. Through the act standardized testing
is implemented as a way to determine student proficiency levels, taking typical daily subjects out of
the day to make room for test taking curriculum. Teachers are no longer spending a majority of time
on practical real world skills, but are cramming the days with test taking strategies and skills needed to
prove their intelligence to the United States government. High stakes testing causes teachers to teach
to the test, which means narrowing content to focus solely on topics covered by the tests (Bohrnstedt
et. al. 324). Students are no longer yearning for an education but rather more are dropping out yearly
since No Child Left Behind has taken place, due to the intense testing that is now required. Teachers

Black Sexual Politics By Patricia Hill Collins Essay
Some see gender as being Black and White and it is, literally. With numerous gender ideologies, not
only is there division between the Black (African Americans) and the White (fair skinned Europeans),
but between men and women as well. Generally, white men and white men only hold most of the
power in the world that there is to possess and it has consciously been set up for them to do so. The
technical name for this global concept is hegemonic masculinity. This highly sexist and blatantly racist
model has been implemented by bigoted western agendas to then be culturally and systematically
carried out for centuries; sometimes without question. In her novel Black Sexual Politics , Patricia Hill
Collins masterfully highlights just how much hegemonic masculinity altered the once blissful power
structure, not just in the western world but specifically within the homes of the Black community. She
also confers the several quintessential benchmarks within hegemonic masculinity that the Black man
must uphold in order for him to unambiguously maintain his dominant status. If the benchmarks of
hegemonic masculinity highlight everything it takes for a Black man to be a man, The Moynihan
Report, 1965 exposes the Black man for everything he lacks. The benchmarks for hegemonic
masculinity that Patricia Hill Collins discuses are eerily connected to the covertly racist allegations of
the report. The Negro Family: The Case for National Action , also known as The Moynihan Report,

The Tombstone Essay
The dictionary.com definition of a museum is a building or place where works of art, scientific
specimens, or other objects of permanent value are kept and displayed. What better place to find an
object of permanent value than a cemetery. I searched through four museums and could not find
anything that peaked my interest into my study of humanities until at last it hit me, a cemetery I had
passed countless times as a child that I had never truly thought of at all. At the corner of Cypresswood
and I 45 I began to sift into a cemetery that I had no true interest in, or so I thought. The cemetery was
home to about sixteen burial plots but one particularly interested me. The headstone read Friedrich

I was most involved at the cemetery by the just general idea of the spot being a cemetery, it is literally
between a feeder road and a major highway, originally I m sure it was in a great spot, but years of
development have changed the land around it, yet somehow preserved the sacred hallow with a simple
fence. As soon as you enter the archway you leave the outside world behind and step lightly as the
graves surround you. You can still hear the loud banters of cars whizzing by at high speed on the
freeway and smell the Sonic across the street, but the air is different inside the wooden pasture fence.
The world flushes away to remember the fallen Wunsche family. Through this experience, I learned
about the Wunsche s belief of the afterlife, our study of ancient man has shown that obviously, the
Wunsche s were homo sapiens because they buried their fallen comrades. In essence, the fact that
there was a cemetery at all shows this, but once you look at the individual tombs, it truly shows about
who the person was and what they believed. Friedrich s tomb was a true potpourri of symbolic
clashes. At the top it was adorned with a small cross, perhaps in reference to Friedrich s own belief in
a Christian religion. The Christian religion was this families answer to the age old question, how did
we get here? This family believed that God put us on this Earth for a reason and that it was necessary

Percy Shelley an ancient poet of the 16th century. He falls under the category of one of the major
English poets who are romantic. The recognition of his works developed radically after his death. He
was a also a key member who belonged to the closest circle of poets who were very visionary. Such
poets included, Leigh hunt, his second wife Mary Shelley who wrote the book Frankenstein, Thomas
love peacock and lord Byron. This document therefore seeks to talk about the various works of Percy
Shelley and how most of it has been used. Percy Shelley was associated with romantic writings. An
example of such is a book he wrote which was known as The Rosicrucian. This a horror novel

to boarding school at the age of ten. The odd boy who was usually very quiet was often being taunted
by schoolmates in a relentless manner exposing out certain aspects about him. For instance anger that
had once even driven him to stab another student of the school with a fork. In school he was always a
dreamer who was very visionary most of the time even forgetting small things such as tying a shoelace
or even having to wear a hat. Thus such kind of habit attracted Shelley to posses a nickname. Most of
the students therefore could now refer to him as Mad Shelley. He is an idol of close to three or four
generations after his death. Most poets looked up to his works. In this list, it would involve Pre
Raphaelite poets who are very well known and also Victorian poets. Some of the poets include Oscar

The Agenda Setting Function of the Mass Media
Introduction
In 1922, Walter Lippmann suggested the very first idea of agenda setting in his book Public Opinion ,
and Bernard Cohen (1963) said The media may not tell us what to think, but they are stunning
successful in telling us what to think about . Those concepts assumed that with the limited ability and
innate curiosity of human beings, most people rely on media institutions to gain information outside
family, neighborhood and workplace. Thus the media organizations have the priority to choose which
information is quality enough to be the most important, which is not, and the information emphasized
by the media could salience transfer to the public.
To verify this concept, McCombs and Shaw conducted the first empirical research, ... Show more

This literature review will use three levels of agenda setting effects as entry point to discussion the
core concept of agenda setting theory the prominent transference from media agenda and public
agenda. Five original published researches will be described and analyzed. Although many parts
aforementioned can not be included in those five studies, with the long history and complicated net of
agenda setting theory, three levels of agenda setting could be an appropriate point cut, just as Guo, Vu
and McCombs (2012) suggest: agenda setting has evolved from a focus on media effects on the public

communication effects, its core is three levels of agenda setting . Considering of that, the following
contents will include (1) the explanation of each level agenda setting. (2) The effects and limitations
of agenda setting theory. (3) The important meaning of five selected researches. The valuation of
agenda setting theory will also be discussed by analyzing those parts mentioned above.

The Negative Effects Of Television On Television And...
According to the A.C. Nielsen Co. (2009), children spend an average of 28 hours a week hooked up to
the TV. That number adds up to 1,456 hours of television a year, which means that children spend an
average of 2 months out of the year watching nonstop TV! Though these figures are shocking, even
more shocking is the scientific evidence that confirms the detrimental effect watching the television is
having on today s children. Watching television for long periods of time has been directly linked to
childhood obesity. A study done by the National Center for Education Statistics shows that children in
kindergarten and first grade who watched more than one hour of television per day, children viewing
as little as one hour of TV daily were 58 percent to 73 percent more likely to be obese than children
who watched less than one hour. (DeBoer, 2015) This is due in part to children s tendency to eat on
unhealthy, high calorie foods while they watch TV. An article by HealthDay News found that children
in homes where parents watch regular TV with commercials had higher levels of junk food
consumption and were more likely to have distorted views about healthy eating than children in homes
where parents watched commercial free digitally recorded TV or other types of media without food
advertising. (Preidt, 2013) Also contributing to this is the fact that children do not exercise while they
watch TV, and watching television often takes the place of outside activities. Another

The Characteristics Of Aborigines In The Secret River By...
In The Secret River, the emancipists that have been transported to Australia continuously mistreat and
disrespect the Aborigines, who are presented as the foundation of Australia. The Aborigines are forced
into hidden parts of Australia where they are massacred by poison they are tortured in a foreign way
by foreign people without cause. For over thousands of years, the Aborigines have lived in peace on
land that belonged to everybody, in a peaceful community. Grenville presents the Aborigines to be
strongly linked to nature. Grenville portrays the Aborigines as beautiful and empowered symbolised
by physical features. Oppositely the Aborigines are presented as vulnerable, animal like and Grenville
uses the novel to convey a message that the use of Australia as a penal colony has a negative effect on
the Aborigines and their culture. Throughout the novel, the Aborigines are presented as powerful
which is reflected in their very rigid facial features. Thornhill says the Aborigine s rock of his face
shaped itself around the big mouth, the imposing nose, the folds of his cheeks. . The adjectives big and
imposing emphasise the power and size of the face, Grenville conveys a message to the reader that the
Aborigine is extraordinary, she uses the to name the Aborigine s features instead of his which suggests
that the facial features are too substantial to belong to one person especially a person of lower status
than the emancipists. Grenville uses a metaphor, rock

A Brief Note On Fisheries And Its Effects On Aquatic...
By 2050, we could effectively be out of fish. (United Nations, 2010) In the 21st century, fisheries are
facing a crisis along with some other public goods. Fisheries satisfy the conditions for being a
common (public) good by being non excludable and rival. No one can exclude a person from fishing,
but present day intake of fish will reduce the amount available for other fisherman in the future ( rival
). Around 80% of the world s fisheries are being over exploited leading to a devastating impact on
aquatic communities as it destabilizes the food chain and destructs the natural habitats of many
oceanic communities.
Fish, however, are not the only stakeholders affected by these current threats. The different hazards to
this industry also cause a socio economic and financial loss. Oceans support the livelihood of over 520
million people involved in fishing and fish related activities. (WWF) Various emerging economies
around the world such as Bangladesh, Peru and Pakistan depend highly on the fishing industry for
their national income. Additionally, seafood is a staple diet in many developing countries as it is a rich
source of protein. With rising incomes in emerging economies, the global demand for fish is growing
rapidly, affecting over 2.6 billion people. Due to the various threats, the overall economic position of
many developing countries is under pressure. Furthermore, fisheries around the world are already

The Demise Of The Andersen Accounting
The Enron scandal was one of the most notorious bankruptcies of all time. Many people know about
the energy titan s downfall but less realize that it was also one of the biggest auditing blunders in
American corporate history, leading to the dissolution of the Arthur Andersen LLP, which at the time
was one of the five largest auditing and accountancy partnerships in the world. The most intriguing
aspect of this case is that Andersen was eventually cleared by the United States Supreme Court, yet
the company still failed to live on due to its tarnished reputation stemming from its unethical
behaviors. The pressure to generate revenue for clients while simultaneously auditing their books
became too large a burden for the firm and they eventually resorted to unethical means to achieve their
objectives. The demise of the Andersen accounting firm shows the true importance of practicing good
ethics and maintaining a good reputation amongst peers; the vitality of the business could depend on
sustaining a clean image in the ever changing business world. Although there were many problems
that led to Andersen s demise, the major ethical issue that plagued the accounting firm was a conflict
of interest due to their dual roles as both an auditing and consulting firm. Andersen provided financial
advice to clients in order to increase revenue streams. The firm was very adept at this; in fact, by the
the end of the 20th century, Andersen LLP had helped tripled the per share revenues of

Examples Of Superpowers In Unbreakable
Many kids were asked when they were little who their hero was. The same kids would answer with
their elders, never with a fictional superhero. A superhero is defined as a benevolent fictional character
with superhuman powers, such as Superman. The argument of the movie, Unbreakable, directed by M.
Night Shyamalan, is whether or not David Dunne has superpowers. Dunne is considered to have
superpowers due to his extreme capability of strength. Dunne has miraculous strength in situations
involving life or death. This is first apparent to viewers when Dunne appears in the hospital after a
high speed train crash. Dunne is shown as the only survivor. It becomes apparent that he is unusual

The End Of History
Post World War II, the United States and the Soviet Union were the two poles of the bipolar world; the
two most powerful nations at that time. From a neorealist s point of view, bipolarity is the ideal case
scenario since both the superpowers will have fear of each other and hence there would be less
international conflicts. However, the Cold War failed to prove this point. The US (a capitalist state)
and the Soviet Union (a communist state) had conflicting beliefs about government and economics;
hence, the disagreements led to the Cold War. The Cold War is believed to have lasted from 1947
1991, a span of 44 years with the Soviet Union eventually being dissolved. The war had long term
effects in the years to come and different political scientists ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Francis Fukuyama, another political scientist, reflected that human nature strives for supremacy and
recognition, which eventually leads to conflicts between different governances. Francis Fukuyama, the
author of the book, The End of History , considered that humans tend to move their lives towards an
end point; which in post Cold War scenario was to eliminate communism and assert liberal democracy
as the universal model of governance. After the Cold War, communism had been overcome by
democracy and hence, according to him, the history had come to an end. He also believes that China
has an efficient authoritarian centralized system with no constraint or checks and balances. This
system can outperform democracy in the short run because decisions can be made quickly hence better
for investment and growth. However, the US and Western Europe have lots of checks and balances
hence, decisions on impending plans cannot be made immediately. The question now is which system
is more sustainable going forward? He thinks that checks and balances and democracy is superior in
the long run because you need to have good leadership and the right leaders for a liberal system to be
implemented properly. After all, he believed that the only form of government across the globe will
eventually be liberal democracy. I consider Fukuyama s deduction that we have reached the End of
History as premature at this point in history. Former British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, stated:
End of history? Beginning of nonsense. After 1990, since the end of Cold War, there have been several
wars and genocides, 9/11 attacks, the emergence of ISIS; all disproving Fukuyama s

Essay about Latin Literature in History
Latin Literature in History Greek literature was one of the numerous Greek accomplishments from
which Romans drew immense influence. The Romans picked up first on the Greek embrace of
rhetoric, which became an educational standard, given that a man s rhetoric, his ability to push the
buttons of the subject audience by way of speeches, supplemented the man s rise to political power.
But as rhetoric began to diminish from Roman daily life following Rome s imperialization, identical
persuasive technique began to show itself in Roman literature. But Greek themes were just a backbone
in Roman literature, and as time, progressed, Rome established a unique literary style, which,
alongside Greek Literature, had a profound ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The period of his writing is rightfully referred to as the Age of Cicero . Numerous others contributing
literature popularized Cicero s age as well. The general Julius Caesar and Historian Sallust made
important contributions to the circle. Caesar with detailed accounts of the Gallic and civil wars, and
Sallust writing history as well, noted for brilliant descriptions of people and their motives. A new kind
of writing called lyric poetry also sprung to life in this period. The rule of the emperor Augustus
marked the beginning of a new more comfortable, more peaceful era for the people known as the Pax
Romana. This bright new lifestyle also brightened their way of viewing life, and is evident in much of
the period s flowering literature. Augustus also actively encouraged writers, and they loved him and
the peace he had secured. Virgil, one of the great champions of poetry at that time, was pleased by
many of the simple things in life, as shown in his observant and beautiful descriptions of country life.
But his ultimate achievement was his epic poem The Aeneid , a final draft telling of the legend of
Rome s ancestor Aeneas, which also interwove Romulus into the tale, crediting both myths. The poem
is a characterization of the celebration of Rome s prosperity and glory. Although it s full completion

Stereotypes In American History X
It is said that there is nothing harder to fight than a belief, especially when it is related to politics or
culture. American History X, a movie produced by Turman Morrissey Company and distributed by
New Line Cinema (Kaye, 1998), touches this topic in a sensitive way when Derek becomes a Neo
Nazi after a black male kills his father. Later, he would realize how his strong belief could be changed,
and discover the reason for his existence through his experiences in prison.
At the beginning of the film a high schooler named Derek is shown as the leader of a Neo Nazi club.
He dresses like a Punk, with long tight pants and boots; he also had his head shaved and many tattoos
printed all over his body, specially a big one on his chest of a Swastika. Derek, due to the death of his
father caused by a black man, was convinced that black people and minorities were the problem. For
him, his country was for Americans that were worth it, and not for illegals or black thieves who only
cause pain and problems to the community.
Derek s transformation began with a family fight. The table gathered by his mother, siblings, girlfriend
and stepfather was a place of political and racial conversation. Derek s racism was imponent, and his
stepfather Murray, because of trying to argue his ideals, was sent out of the house; therefore, causing

Is Julius Caesar Arrogant Or Dangerous
The character Julius Caesar is presented as arrogant and dangerous in Act 1 of the play. Discuss.
Often called the great political thriller , the play Julius Caesar written by William Shakespeare
depicted the political world of ancient Rome. Throughout history, many historians and scholars have
argued upon whether Julius Caesar was a man of great military power and political influence or a man
trapped in his own personal weaknesses and complications. Of the many topics of debate, the
statement that Julius Caesar is presented as arrogant and dangerous in Act 1 of the play is not, in the
writer s opinion, a full perspective of him. Although he did illustrate signs of tyranny, Caesar would
often betray signs of weaknesses as well.
Shakespeare s Caesar dominated the play at the very beginning. Through the conversation of Flavius,

The first act of the play have illuminated his nobility in many ways. Domestically, he was faithful to
his wife, Calpurnia, and respected her advices and opinions. Shakespeare highlighted the importance
of Calpurnia to Caesar by designating Caesar s first word in the play to be Calpurnia . Publically, he
displayed honour and modesty. When Caesar was offered the crown thrice by his fellow friend,
Antony, Caesar put it by thrice, every time gentler than other.
Julius Caesar was not a tyrant, not a Roman as brave and respected as other characters such as Brutus,
and certainly not entirely presented as dangerous and arrogant in Act 1 of the play. Instead he was a
mixture of many characteristics that would later be the cause of much debate among historians and
Shakespearian scholars. It was the many aspects, noble and cowardly, of the character of Julius Caesar
that Shakespeare manipulated upon to create a play that still satisfies the minds of readers who study it

My Experience Of Attending Public School Education
I grew up in a diverse spectrum of economic affluence. Attending public school exposed me to a wide
range of economic lifestyles within my community. However, it wasn t until I was older that I began
to notice this. Due to my public school education, the friends that I had growing up came from various
backgrounds. My experience growing up with, learning with, and forming friendships with people
who have come from low income families and communities has given me the skills to effectively
teach low income communities. In high school, I was part of several organizations that revolved
around community service. Volunteering for organizations that benefit low income communities and

Immigrants In Emma Lazarus s The New Colossus
In The New Colossus, Emma Lazarus writes about the Statue of Liberty, painting it out as the beacon
for hope, prosperity, and freedom to those wishing to start anew. If they are the wretched refuse or the
huddled masses yearning to breathe free , she invites them to come to the United States, where from
the Mother of Exiles Glows [a] world wide welcome . Sadly, many people were anti immigrant and
anti foreigner, believing that most immigrants will only bring harm to the economy, will only be a
detriment to the improvement of the nation, and will only have a negative impact on the nation s

He noted that it only leads to misleading values and true ability to contribute to society, and if there

Marching Band As A Sport
Irene was a high school student involved in the marching band. Before high school, students bullied
Irene due to her weight of two hundred pounds. Irene played the clarinet, but she was not sure if she
wanted to join the marching band. The dark memories of people berating her physical appearance
scared her into thinking that her fellow band mates would do the same. Irene desperately wanted to get
into shape so she joined a sport, but knew she was not fit enough for any of the typical ball sports. She
eventually realized that the only sport remaining was marching band.
However, people argue that marching band is not a sport. What is a sport? According to Wood the
definition of a sport involves physical activity and skill where an individual/team competes against
another individual/team and has a set of rules or customs. Marching band is a sport because it involves
a lot of physical activity, rules and competition. The argument against categorizing marching band as a
sport is the typical conditioning a normal sports team would are slightly different.
Irene thought wrong about her teammates bullying her, instead they rallied around her and made her
feel welcome. With marching she was able to get into shape. In the process, she had made 120 or more
friends that she could count on. Marching band is a welcoming sport and open to everyone and anyone

Team Building, Leadership And Motivation Essay
Team building, Leadership and Motivation
Building the right team with the most appropriate leadership and striving to keep the team motivated
cannot be over estimated in project management. This stage is initiated from the planning stage.
Unlike larger scaled projects that teams are to be built around the project, our team was built before
defining the project, we therefore had to tap into the strengths of each group member. This was
achieved by gauging the types of contributions made by members during the planning stage, making it
easy to identify what roles specific individuals are best suited to carry out. More so, significant
leadership qualities were identified in individuals within the group. These included, taking
responsibility for initiating work towards the project, taking responsibility of gathering all team
members to initial meetings as well natural co ordination of group activities.
According to The Management Study guide, Team building refers to the various activities undertaken
to motivate the team members and increase the overall performance of the team (Management Study
Guide 2016). The dynamics of building and maintaining a strong team are extremely vital as the
knowledge and expertise each teammate brings to the table will be beneficial, ultimately. To build
momentum and a healthy work relationship within the team, we held several team meets and went to
lunch and/or dinner occasionally. This phase of project management carries through to the completion

Rollingstone recently did a list of what they thought to be the one hundred greatest pop hits. By taking
a few songs from this list it is possible to examine some of these characteristics that make a great
song. One of the most memorable and timeless songs in history would have to be Rolling Stones
Satisfaction. In the Rollinstone article they ranked this song as being the second greatest pop song of
all time right under the Beatles Yesterday. This song is centered on a guitar riff that lead guitarist Keith
Richards almost while sleeping. He woke up with the riff in his mind, recorded it on a tape player, and
then immediately fell back asleep. This guitar riff is the hook of the song, which had immediate appeal
and connection for the listener. The hook and immediate mass appeal were two of the techniques
mentioned earlier as a character of a successful song. The song also touched the emotional chord of
the listener with intense lyrics that made cultural commentary in the sixties the song was destined to
be a hit. It was at number one for four weeks, on the charts for fourteen weeks, and was the song that
propelled the Rolling Stones from a decent band into one of the greatest rock bands of all time. An
example of a song that was successful more because of its lyrical content rather than mostly its
musical aspect is Michael Jackson s Billie Jean. The song was one of Jackson s first attempts at

Louisiana s Cajun Dialect
Louisiana s Cajun Dialect
Linguist and Cajun Megan E. Melancon calls the Cajun dialect a gumbo . There are many languages
that make up this gumbo. The various languages include Spanish, French, German, and English. The
Cajun language is mainly spoken in Southern Louisiana, but can reach into parts of Southern Texas
and Southern Mississippi due to emigration (Melancon).
The word Cajun comes from the word Acadien. Acadia was a French colony in 1604 located in the
areas now known as New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, Canada. In the middle of the eighteenth
century approximately four thousand Acadians moved into South Louisiana, into the region around
Lafayette and the Lafourche Bayou country. This group of people brought with them the French
language. Over the years the Cajun dialect emerged. Many say Cajun is not just a dialect but an entire

The Fight Over the Redwoods Essay
The Fight Over The Redwoods
Abstract
Pacific Lumber Company, founded in 1869, oversees the careful maintenance and logging of the
world s most productive timberland. Pacific Lumber holds the last private forest of old growth
Redwood. In addition to it s unique hardwood, the Redwood forest hosts an ecosystem supporting
virgin ground never logged, and the endangered Marbled Murrelet. After being purchased in 1985 by
the Maxxam firm and it s owner Mr. Hurwitz, Pacific Lumber tripled logging volume and looked to
log the previously privately protected Redwood forest. Due to the use of junk bonds for financial
backing, Maxxam Inc. needed to dramatically increase revenue streams to make interest payments

If the ecosystem supporting our way of life collapses, so does our way of life.
Question 2: Although land ownership is an individual right, what takes place on that land is still a
concern for governing agencies. In this case, the impact to ecosystems covers an area greater than just
the area owned by one individual or firm. Controlling the impacts of the landowners operation
mitigates the impact to other landowners in the area. Owning land still requires a reasonable person to
behave in a manner consistent with the law of the land. In this analysis, a gentlemen named Hurwitz
backed Maxxam Inc. to purchase Pacific Lumber. Hungry for profits, he altered Pacific Lumber s
focus to the short term profitability of the firm, instead of long term sustainment of the business. Poor
business practices put Maxxam Inc. in a position requiring a fixed amount of income to pay loan
interest and fees. Hurwitz never assessed whether or not he could sustain payment with current
operations and was forced to increase operations to make profitability still viable. (The Terrestrial
Environment, 1998)
Question 3: Mainstream environmentalists were correct to stop Pacific Lumber from ravaging it s
timberland. Prior business practices provided ecosystem shelter for endangered species and protected
virgin forest from being logged. Changes to federal

The Role Of Concreteness And Imagery Of Mental Processing
Psycholinguists are interested in the role of concreteness and imagery in mental processing. The dual
coding theory proposes that mental representations are associated with two distinct systems: the verbal
system, which deals specifically with language and the non verbal imagery system, which deals with
nonlinguistic objects and events (Clark Paivio 1991; Harley 2008; Paivio et al. 1988). The two
systems are distinct, yet they are interconnected to each other in a way that activation in one system
can lead to activation in the other. For example, one can think of the word apple and also visualize the
object apple. The dual coding theory holds that concrete language has the ability to activate both the
verbal and the visual system, while abstract language activates only the verbal system (Clark Paivio
1991; Kounios Holcomb 1994).
Previous studies in the field have shown that the imagery and concreteness of a word can influence its
identification. Specifically, it has been suggested that imagery can produce better performance in
learning and recall because of our ability to access existing mental representations and use them as
memory aids. The guiding question following from this is: Are concrete words indeed superior to
abstract words in their ability to evoke mental images? This paper intends to explore the dual coding
theory and the effects of concreteness and imagery in greater detail. I present studies that discuss the
role of images as possible mediators,

The Dangers Of Public Smoking
Public smoking is being allowed to smoke in places that involve the community. Some places have
smoking bans because of the problems it can cause. I think people should not be able to smoke in
public places because it affects other people s health, it pollutes the earth, it could have a bad influence
on people, and it has an unpleasant smell.
Cigarettes does not only affect the person smoking, it can affect the people around them also.
Cigarettes contain a lot of chemicals that are harmful to humans: Phenolic compounds are toxic to
humans when consumed; for example, ingesting 1 g of phenol has been reported to be lethal and
causes muscle weakness and tremors, paralysis, loss of coordination, convulsions and coma (Pistonesi
et al . 2006). People should be able to go places without having to ingest something that can be
harmful to them. Some people may already have health problems such as asthma and the smoke can
be very dangerous for them to intake cigarette smoke. It could also affect an unborn baby. For
example, if a pregnant woman works at a place that allows smoking and inhales cigarette smoke
constantly, it could be harmful to her baby and cause permanent damage. A study conducted in
Ahmedabad, India to compare secondhand smoke in public place before and after a smoking ban
concluded that, SHS exposure was significantly reduced overall in public places after enactment of the
smoke free legislation (Jingyan et al. 31). This shows that people were exposed to

Research Findings
Dave Ramsey has been known to say (2011), What an organization spends money on is what they
value (p. 275). He also goes on to state that if you feel that your employees are a valuable part of the
company, you need to pay them as if they are (Ramsey, 2011, p. 275). When an employee feels
appreciated, they will have a longer, more productive career with the company. According to Ross
Blake (2006), it is estimated that it can cost a company anywhere from 50% to 150% of an employee s
annual salary to replace them. If an employee makes $40,000 annually, it is estimated that it will cost
$20,000 $60,000 to replace that employee. These amounts include recruiting, interviewing,
orientation, training and loss of expertise (Blake, 2006). So what methods can we use to retain our
valuable employees?
It is believed that compensation plans are a legitimate way to express appreciation in employee s
productivity and efforts and an excellent way to retain employment. Some of the main reasons to
institute a compensation plan are (Vivekanand, p.2): Ø Increased employee morale and motivation Ø
Improved employee performance Ø Increased employee productivity Ø Enhance employee efficiency
Ø Reduction in employee turnover Ø Increased company commitment
So what must one do to create a successful compensation and performance plan? There seem to be
four areas that need to be present no matter what plan you chose. One of the first steps

Critical Theories Of Criminology
Introduction
In this paper, I will discuss conflict criminology, radical criminology, peacemaking criminology, and
postmodern criminology providing a comparison as well as a contrast to each.
Discussion
There are several theories developing critical theories of criminology, the first discussed in this paper
will be conflict theory (Bohm Vogel, 2011). The conflict theory is the inequality of competing groups,
moreover, the different social statuses of individuals. This theory compares the differences in white
collar crime to the crime of the blue collar class. White collar crime is mostly money related crimes,
including embezzlement, committed by the economically elite, conversely, blue collar crime is
considered more violent as well ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The structure of this societal hierarchy places a few individuals in the higher ranks of society with the
majority within the lower ranks, the proverbial winners as compared to the losers. This theory bases
crime upon the various class struggles to obtain wealth within an unequal economic environment. The
lower class struggles to obtain the same level of material wealth held by those of the higher classes
creating an extremely competitive environment leading to individuals taking advantage of the weaker
members of society to further their own level of wealth. The radical theory defines crime as the
deprivation of basic human rights, as individuals compete for a portion of societal wealth in an
unequally distributed market they become overly competitive with one another leading to what is
described as senseless violence.
The third theory discussed in this paper is the peacemaking criminology, this theory is a non violent
approach to change society through the transformations beginning at the individual level (Bohm
Vogel, 2011). The theorist of peacemaking view suffering as the cause of crime, expressing the need
for a change within society to become for aware of the needs of those less fortunate, moreover,
working together to resolve those issues. This theory views the acts of punishing individuals for
crimes committed as the source for continued criminal acts. A shift from

  • 2. No Child Left Behind Argumentative Essay Four words drove me into retirement No Child Left Behind. I could no longer attend to the needs and wants of my students. All I was supposed to do was get them ready to take tests (Steve Eklund). Steve Eklund, a schoolteacher in California, states this claim when asked his opinion on No Child Left Behind by Education Votes, a page run by the National Education Association. Through this, he shows his complete disapproval of the act and expresses just one of the reasons that many see it as a burden to American education. Beginning in 2001, George W. Bush declared to the American people that it was time to make a change in the American education system. The idea was dubbed No Child Left Behind. The bill was later signed into law on January ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The act was made to follow up Lyndon B. Johnson s Elementary and Secondary Education Act, which was created on April 9th, 1965. However, the No Child Left Behind act twisted itself to negatively influence the American education system by implementing inane standards and learning targets that do not measure actual learning. One overlying problem seen is within the testing that takes place. Through the act standardized testing is implemented as a way to determine student proficiency levels, taking typical daily subjects out of the day to make room for test taking curriculum. Teachers are no longer spending a majority of time on practical real world skills, but are cramming the days with test taking strategies and skills needed to prove their intelligence to the United States government. High stakes testing causes teachers to teach to the test, which means narrowing content to focus solely on topics covered by the tests (Bohrnstedt et. al. 324). Students are no longer yearning for an education but rather more are dropping out yearly since No Child Left Behind has taken place, due to the intense testing that is now required. Teachers are having to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Black Sexual Politics By Patricia Hill Collins Essay Some see gender as being Black and White and it is, literally. With numerous gender ideologies, not only is there division between the Black (African Americans) and the White (fair skinned Europeans), but between men and women as well. Generally, white men and white men only hold most of the power in the world that there is to possess and it has consciously been set up for them to do so. The technical name for this global concept is hegemonic masculinity. This highly sexist and blatantly racist model has been implemented by bigoted western agendas to then be culturally and systematically carried out for centuries; sometimes without question. In her novel Black Sexual Politics , Patricia Hill Collins masterfully highlights just how much hegemonic masculinity altered the once blissful power structure, not just in the western world but specifically within the homes of the Black community. She also confers the several quintessential benchmarks within hegemonic masculinity that the Black man must uphold in order for him to unambiguously maintain his dominant status. If the benchmarks of hegemonic masculinity highlight everything it takes for a Black man to be a man, The Moynihan Report, 1965 exposes the Black man for everything he lacks. The benchmarks for hegemonic masculinity that Patricia Hill Collins discuses are eerily connected to the covertly racist allegations of the report. • 4. The Tombstone Essay The dictionary.com definition of a museum is a building or place where works of art, scientific specimens, or other objects of permanent value are kept and displayed. What better place to find an object of permanent value than a cemetery. I searched through four museums and could not find anything that peaked my interest into my study of humanities until at last it hit me, a cemetery I had passed countless times as a child that I had never truly thought of at all. At the corner of Cypresswood and I 45 I began to sift into a cemetery that I had no true interest in, or so I thought. The cemetery was home to about sixteen burial plots but one particularly interested me. The headstone read Friedrich August Wunsche, Geb July 20, 1837, Gest ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I was most involved at the cemetery by the just general idea of the spot being a cemetery, it is literally between a feeder road and a major highway, originally I m sure it was in a great spot, but years of development have changed the land around it, yet somehow preserved the sacred hallow with a simple fence. As soon as you enter the archway you leave the outside world behind and step lightly as the graves surround you. You can still hear the loud banters of cars whizzing by at high speed on the freeway and smell the Sonic across the street, but the air is different inside the wooden pasture fence. The world flushes away to remember the fallen Wunsche family. Through this experience, I learned about the Wunsche s belief of the afterlife, our study of ancient man has shown that obviously, the Wunsche s were homo sapiens because they buried their fallen comrades. In essence, the fact that there was a cemetery at all shows this, but once you look at the individual tombs, it truly shows about who the person was and what they believed. Friedrich s tomb was a true potpourri of symbolic clashes. At the top it was adorned with a small cross, perhaps in reference to Friedrich s own belief in a Christian religion. The Christian religion was this families answer to the age old question, how did we get here? This family believed that God put us on this Earth for a reason and that it was necessary ... The Agenda Setting Function of the Mass Media Introduction In 1922, Walter Lippmann suggested the very first idea of agenda setting in his book Public Opinion , and Bernard Cohen (1963) said The media may not tell us what to think, but they are stunning successful in telling us what to think about . Those concepts assumed that with the limited ability and innate curiosity of human beings, most people rely on media institutions to gain information outside family, neighborhood and workplace. That number adds up to 1,456 hours of television a year, which means that children spend an average of 2 months out of the year watching nonstop TV! Though these figures are shocking, even more shocking is the scientific evidence that confirms the detrimental effect watching the television is having on today s children. Watching television for long periods of time has been directly linked to childhood obesity. A study done by the National Center for Education Statistics shows that children in kindergarten and first grade who watched more than one hour of television per day, children viewing as little as one hour of TV daily were 58 percent to 73 percent more likely to be obese than children who watched less than one hour. (DeBoer, 2015) This is due in part to children s tendency to eat on unhealthy, high calorie foods while they watch TV. An article by HealthDay News found that children in homes where parents watch regular TV with commercials had higher levels of junk food consumption and were more likely to have distorted views about healthy eating than children in homes where parents watched commercial free digitally recorded TV or other types of media without food advertising. (Preidt, 2013) Also contributing to this is the fact that children do not exercise while they watch TV, and watching television often takes the place of outside activities. Another ... For over thousands of years, the Aborigines have lived in peace on land that belonged to everybody, in a peaceful community. Grenville presents the Aborigines to be strongly linked to nature. Grenville portrays the Aborigines as beautiful and empowered symbolised by physical features. Oppositely the Aborigines are presented as vulnerable, animal like and Grenville uses the novel to convey a message that the use of Australia as a penal colony has a negative effect on the Aborigines and their culture. Throughout the novel, the Aborigines are presented as powerful which is reflected in their very rigid facial features. Thornhill says the Aborigine s rock of his face shaped itself around the big mouth, the imposing nose, the folds of his cheeks. . The adjectives big and imposing emphasise the power and size of the face, Grenville conveys a message to the reader that the Aborigine is extraordinary, she uses the to name the Aborigine s features instead of his which suggests that the facial features are too substantial to belong to one person especially a person of lower status than the emancipists. Many people know about the energy titan s downfall but less realize that it was also one of the biggest auditing blunders in American corporate history, leading to the dissolution of the Arthur Andersen LLP, which at the time was one of the five largest auditing and accountancy partnerships in the world. The most intriguing aspect of this case is that Andersen was eventually cleared by the United States Supreme Court, yet the company still failed to live on due to its tarnished reputation stemming from its unethical behaviors. The pressure to generate revenue for clients while simultaneously auditing their books became too large a burden for the firm and they eventually resorted to unethical means to achieve their objectives. The demise of the Andersen accounting firm shows the true importance of practicing good ethics and maintaining a good reputation amongst peers; the vitality of the business could depend on sustaining a clean image in the ever changing business world. Although there were many problems that led to Andersen s demise, the major ethical issue that plagued the accounting firm was a conflict of interest due to their dual roles as both an auditing and consulting firm. From a neorealist s point of view, bipolarity is the ideal case scenario since both the superpowers will have fear of each other and hence there would be less international conflicts. However, the Cold War failed to prove this point. The US (a capitalist state) and the Soviet Union (a communist state) had conflicting beliefs about government and economics; hence, the disagreements led to the Cold War. Francis Fukuyama, another political scientist, reflected that human nature strives for supremacy and recognition, which eventually leads to conflicts between different governances. Francis Fukuyama, the author of the book, The End of History , considered that humans tend to move their lives towards an end point; which in post Cold War scenario was to eliminate communism and assert liberal democracy as the universal model of governance. After the Cold War, communism had been overcome by democracy and hence, according to him, the history had come to an end. He also believes that China has an efficient authoritarian centralized system with no constraint or checks and balances. This system can outperform democracy in the short run because decisions can be made quickly hence better for investment and growth. However, the US and Western Europe have lots of checks and balances hence, decisions on impending plans cannot be made immediately. The question now is which system is more sustainable going forward? He thinks that checks and balances and democracy is superior in the long run because you need to have good leadership and the right leaders for a liberal system to be implemented properly. After all, he believed that the only form of government across the globe will eventually be liberal democracy. I consider Fukuyama s deduction that we have reached the End of History as premature at this point in history. Former British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, stated: End of history? • 26. Immigrants In Emma Lazarus s The New Colossus In The New Colossus, Emma Lazarus writes about the Statue of Liberty, painting it out as the beacon for hope, prosperity, and freedom to those wishing to start anew. If they are the wretched refuse or the huddled masses yearning to breathe free , she invites them to come to the United States, where from the Mother of Exiles Glows [a] world wide welcome . Sadly, many people were anti immigrant and anti foreigner, believing that most immigrants will only bring harm to the economy, will only be a detriment to the improvement of the nation, and will only have a negative impact on the nation s social/moral standings. These two views of the late 19th century were very contradictory. On one hand, the nation was created by immigrants from Europe, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 7864. His reasoning behind the veto was mainly the radical departure from our national policy relating to immigration . He understood the true values of what the United States had always been, and what their image was around the world to those that are in tough spots in life. He understood that the nations had very divided sides when it came to immigration and that policies contradicted each other here and there. He understood that some of the citizens wanted to restrict immigration to [protect] our population against degeneration and saving our national peace and quiet from imported turbulence and disorder , but he did not find those reasons strong enough. He saw past what was on the surface and thought about the concerns in a different light. The requirement for immigrants to be able to read, write, and then write 25 words of the Constitution in any language showed nothing of their character. He noted that it only leads to misleading values and true ability to contribute to society, and if there were more concerns than just illiteracy, such as physical or mental health, [those] causes should be dealt with directly, instead of making illiteracy the pretext for exclusion . Irene played the clarinet, but she was not sure if she wanted to join the marching band. The dark memories of people berating her physical appearance scared her into thinking that her fellow band mates would do the same. According to Wood the definition of a sport involves physical activity and skill where an individual/team competes against another individual/team and has a set of rules or customs. Marching band is a sport because it involves a lot of physical activity, rules and competition. The argument against categorizing marching band as a sport is the typical conditioning a normal sports team would are slightly different. Team Building, Leadership And Motivation Essay Team building, Leadership and Motivation Building the right team with the most appropriate leadership and striving to keep the team motivated cannot be over estimated in project management. This stage is initiated from the planning stage. Unlike larger scaled projects that teams are to be built around the project, our team was built before defining the project, we therefore had to tap into the strengths of each group member. This was achieved by gauging the types of contributions made by members during the planning stage, making it easy to identify what roles specific individuals are best suited to carry out. More so, significant leadership qualities were identified in individuals within the group. These included, taking responsibility for initiating work towards the project, taking responsibility of gathering all team members to initial meetings as well natural co ordination of group activities. According to The Management Study guide, Team building refers to the various activities undertaken to motivate the team members and increase the overall performance of the team (Management Study Guide 2016). The dynamics of building and maintaining a strong team are extremely vital as the knowledge and expertise each teammate brings to the table will be beneficial, ultimately. Pacific Lumber holds the last private forest of old growth Redwood. In addition to it s unique hardwood, the Redwood forest hosts an ecosystem supporting virgin ground never logged, and the endangered Marbled Murrelet. After being purchased in 1985 by the Maxxam firm and it s owner Mr. Hurwitz, Pacific Lumber tripled logging volume and looked to log the previously privately protected Redwood forest. Question 2: Although land ownership is an individual right, what takes place on that land is still a concern for governing agencies. In this case, the impact to ecosystems covers an area greater than just the area owned by one individual or firm. Controlling the impacts of the landowners operation mitigates the impact to other landowners in the area. Owning land still requires a reasonable person to behave in a manner consistent with the law of the land. In this analysis, a gentlemen named Hurwitz backed Maxxam Inc. to purchase Pacific Lumber. Hungry for profits, he altered Pacific Lumber s focus to the short term profitability of the firm, instead of long term sustainment of the business. Poor business practices put Maxxam Inc. in a position requiring a fixed amount of income to pay loan interest and fees. • 37. The Role Of Concreteness And Imagery Of Mental Processing Psycholinguists are interested in the role of concreteness and imagery in mental processing. The dual coding theory proposes that mental representations are associated with two distinct systems: the verbal system, which deals specifically with language and the non verbal imagery system, which deals with nonlinguistic objects and events (Clark Paivio 1991; Harley 2008; Paivio et al. 1988). The two systems are distinct, yet they are interconnected to each other in a way that activation in one system can lead to activation in the other. For example, one can think of the word apple and also visualize the object apple. The dual coding theory holds that concrete language has the ability to activate both the verbal and the visual system, while abstract language activates only the verbal system (Clark Paivio 1991; Kounios Holcomb 1994). Previous studies in the field have shown that the imagery and concreteness of a word can influence its identification. Specifically, it has been suggested that imagery can produce better performance in learning and recall because of our ability to access existing mental representations and use them as memory aids. The guiding question following from this is: Are concrete words indeed superior to abstract words in their ability to evoke mental images? This paper intends to explore the dual coding theory and the effects of concreteness and imagery in greater detail. I present studies that discuss the role of images as possible mediators, ... I think people should not be able to smoke in public places because it affects other people s health, it pollutes the earth, it could have a bad influence on people, and it has an unpleasant smell. Cigarettes does not only affect the person smoking, it can affect the people around them also. Cigarettes contain a lot of chemicals that are harmful to humans: Phenolic compounds are toxic to humans when consumed; for example, ingesting 1 g of phenol has been reported to be lethal and causes muscle weakness and tremors, paralysis, loss of coordination, convulsions and coma (Pistonesi et al . 2006). People should be able to go places without having to ingest something that can be harmful to them. Some people may already have health problems such as asthma and the smoke can be very dangerous for them to intake cigarette smoke. It could also affect an unborn baby. For example, if a pregnant woman works at a place that allows smoking and inhales cigarette smoke constantly, it could be harmful to her baby and cause permanent damage. A study conducted in Ahmedabad, India to compare secondhand smoke in public place before and after a smoking ban concluded that, SHS exposure was significantly reduced overall in public places after enactment of the smoke free legislation (Jingyan et al. 31). When an employee feels appreciated, they will have a longer, more productive career with the company. According to Ross Blake (2006), it is estimated that it can cost a company anywhere from 50% to 150% of an employee s annual salary to replace them. Discussion There are several theories developing critical theories of criminology, the first discussed in this paper will be conflict theory (Bohm Vogel, 2011). The conflict theory is the inequality of competing groups, moreover, the different social statuses of individuals. This theory compares the differences in white collar crime to the crime of the blue collar class. The structure of this societal hierarchy places a few individuals in the higher ranks of society with the majority within the lower ranks, the proverbial winners as compared to the losers. This theory bases crime upon the various class struggles to obtain wealth within an unequal economic environment. The lower class struggles to obtain the same level of material wealth held by those of the higher classes creating an extremely competitive environment leading to individuals taking advantage of the weaker members of society to further their own level of wealth. The radical theory defines crime as the deprivation of basic human rights, as individuals compete for a portion of societal wealth in an unequally distributed market they become overly competitive with one another leading to what is described as senseless violence. The third theory discussed in this paper is the peacemaking criminology, this theory is a non violent approach to change society through the transformations beginning at the individual level (Bohm Vogel, 2011). The theorist of peacemaking view suffering as the cause of crime, expressing the need for a change within society to become for aware of the needs of those less fortunate, moreover, working together to resolve those issues. This theory views the acts of punishing individuals for crimes committed as the source for continued criminal acts. A shift from ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
