The Pros And Cons Of Critical Rationalism
Introduction
My essay is about the second issue where teachers have to follow the prescribed curriculum in the
country and they also have to teach or transfer the curriculum content as it is with no additions of
other information to the learners. This essay is written in a critical rationalism philosophical
perspective. I will cover the implications for me as a student teacher, the meaning of this,
advantages, disadvantages, my critical reflection and etc.
Body
Critical Rationalism believes that we should question what we are told by authorities and that we
should examine our own ideas. This perspective believes that human beings can solve their
problems by thinking critically or clearly about things and discussing everything openly, it also
focuses on avoiding falsity. Critical Rationalism is a process of solving problems by trial and error
and it tells us that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

regardless of their differences so that they can achieve self fulfilment and for meaningful
participation in society as citizens of a free country. Learners should be provided with access to
higher education but I believe that this is not possible for all learners because some learners can t

Emily Grierson Narrator
In A Rose for Emily, William Faulkner uses the narrator to describe Emily Grierson s long standing
title in the community, provide background information about Emily, and also to encompass the
reader within the story and all them to create their own judgements and opinions about the
notorious Emily Grierson. In the town of Jefferson, simply saying the name Grierson guaranteed to
make all ears within hearing range perk up in an effort to gather new information about the
monumental recluse. The Grierson family s importance was equivalent to that of southern royalty.
This was first established when William Faulkneropened the story with Emily s death and how our
whole town went to her funeral; the men out of a sort of respectful affection... Show more content

The narrator seems to be ever present through the town and knows as much as, if not more than,
the other men and women in the community. This is first depicted when Emily begins to see a
man, Then we said, She will persuade him yet, because Homer himself had remarked he liked
men, and it was known that he drank with the younger men in the Elks Club that he was not a
marrying man. (224). Another instance is when the narrator said, Already we knew that there
was one room in that region above stairs which no one had seen in forty years, and it would have
to be forced. They waited until Miss Emily was decently in the ground before they opened it,
(226) but the narrator never explains how this was known. William Faulkner used the narrator as
an almost omniscient voice, for the narrator knows what everyone else in the town has seen and
thought about Emily; however, Faulkner keeps Emily s thoughts private in order to preserve her
enigmatic character. Another benefit provided to the narrator was the fact that he/she was not
given a gender or set identity. Then some of the ladies began to say that it was a disgrace to the
town and a bad example to the young people. The men did not want to interfere... (224) By keeping
the narrator unclassified, Faulkner was able to incorporate the narrator with

Boston knew the call center project was potentially valuable, but so were many others considered
by BPOC. Would its benefits be realized quickly enough? Would all involved groups be willing to
incur the hardship of shifting systems and retraining the hundreds of people involved when the time
came? The customer advocacy group had already successfully proved the concept in a European
pilot, but Boston questioned whether all stakeholders at the company would commit to a full
crossborder and cross functional implementation. The project would require a significant number of
dedicated resources throughout the company for over a year.

Cisco had nearly 10,000 employees involved with sales accounts (e.g., account managers, systems
engineers, operational support) in nearly 60 countries. Cisco sold directly to larger customers and
indirectly through distributors and value added resellers (VARs). Distributors sold products as is,
and VARs added something to the products before reselling them. Cisco also worked closely with
strategic alliance partners such as IBM, AT T, and Hewlett Packard in order to reach more
customers and provide broader solutions. Although Cisco designed and developed its products, it
did not manufacture them. Instead, Cisco worked with a network of manufacturing partners that
assembled the products based on specifications provided by Cisco. Most of the products were
shipped directly from the manufacturing facilities to customers, distributors, and VARs. Cisco
relied on its information technology (IT) network to transmit orders and stay on top of customer

Louisiana State Politics Analysis
Louisiana State Politics
John Kenneth Galbraith once said Nothing is so admirable in politics as a short memory. While in
many ways this is an accurate statement within the political realm of the United States there are
many times that politics is greatly affected by the memories of the past. This is especially true of
the Southern United States. The South has its own perspective and history that impacts the political
environment and unities the region unlike anywhere else in the United States. However, as united as
the South has been on the national level there are vast differences to be found on the state level.
This paper will offer an overview of one of the Southern States politics in particular, that of
Louisiana. Rather it is European ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
V.O. Key Jr. stated it best when he wrote ...a people ruled by a military government will retain an
antipathy toward the occupying power. This lingering distrust and backlash against Northern
control and the recently freed slaves is one of, it not the most, pivotal factor in the formation of the
South as distinct political arena with its own views, rules, voting habits, and culture. Many
Southerners felt that to face the terms that congress had demanded for reentry into the Union were
tantamount to submission, degrading, and invited further demands and to bow before them was to
lose the honor of the South. In face of this mentality the North preceded to vote in the
Reconstruction acts, import political supporters from the North, and enforce military control in the
Southern states. These outsiders were known as scalawags and the enforced Republican rule lead
to the now freed slaves being vilified and equivocated with leading the Republican Party. The
occurrences of violence against the newly freed slaves was more endemic than ever before. A
reactionary faction arose in Louisiana that eventually resulted in its government being liquidated
and the state placed into a military district with Texas and under the direction of Union General
Sheridan. This resulted in a new state constitution which was ratified in 1868. The constitution that
emerged provided for equal citizenship, the black franchise, equal public accommodations, and
public education. However, this new government under military control was heavily supported by
the African American Republican vote and faced extreme opposition by the Redeemers and
paramilitary groups such as the Ku Klux Klan. By 1874 the support of Reconstruction was
crumbling in the face of the opposition of the South and the weariness of the North. While New
Orleans was a Republican stronghold, the rest of the state was slowly, if violently returning to

Pirate Concessions wanted to try another promotional event, they went for something that they
call the meal deal . The meal deal is two dollars to upgrade a regular entree to an entree with a
drink and chips. All of their entrees are two dollars to two fifty, with chips being one dollar, and
a drink being one fifty, some meals without the meal deal turn out to be five dollars. With the
meal deal the customer can save from fifty cents which the employees strongly encourage them
to use in the candy department, all the way to a dollar which again employees push the candy or
a popcorn to finish off their meal. After a few games management was going to get rid of the
meal deal and try some other type of promotional event. But the meal deal seemed to be a big hit
with all of their customers, so they turned this special event into something they use every game.
Now whenever a customer orders an entree employees always ask if they want to upgrade to the

Queen Guinevere
Thomas Malory and Sara Teasdale emphasize distinct themes in their re tellings of the legend of
Guinevere. Women play a huge role in the Arthurian legends and the most influential woman is
Queen Guinevere. The legend of Queen Guinevere evolves through time with the evolution of
women in society. While gaining more power in society, women are portrayed as more independent
and more intelligent, therefore, the various portrayals of Queen Guinevereare written to respect the
time period and the role of women during the era.
During the 1600 s, women were viewed as inferior to men and were treated unequally. Early texts
such as Le Morte D Arthur, written by Thomas Malory, portray Queen Guinevere as a weak woman
and a selfish adulterous. This text ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sara Teasdale s poem Guenevere is an example of a text that shows remorse for Queen
Guinevere, rather than depicting her as just an unfaithful wife and a treacherous queen. In this
text, Queen Guinevere is seen as a strong political figure who cares about the respect of her
people and her king. Her love for Sir Lancelot takes away her crown and her respect from others,
her affair has unqueened [her] forevermore and she soon realizes that her love for Lancelot
grows bitter that was once so sweet (Teasdale 44, 65). The poem illustrates the doubt in her
decision to love Lancelot and commit adultery despite how much she wants to be with him. This
depiction is not seen in early text which means that the modern world has influenced the writer
to reveal the powerful political figure in Queen Guinevere. This difference in the text means
that while society has grown to accept women, the legend has transformed into a text that favors
women. The modern society has also learned to understand the mind of a woman in power and
the decisions she makes for herself. She is self conscious about the decision to pursue a
relationship with Sir Lancelot, and in the end her decision causes the downfall of Camelot and
her king. In the poem, Guinevere states I was a queen, and I have lost my crown; A wife, and I
have broken all my vows . . . There is no other havoc left to do (Teasdale 1 4). Teasdale wants

The Cranberries Pros And Cons
The Cranberries The cranberries originally started out at The Cranberry Saw Us. Based out of
Limerick Ireland. After their original singer left the band put out an ad in 1990 for a female
singer. Dolores O Riordan responded and after coming up with a rough draft of the song Linger
was hired immediately. After Dolores joined the band released a mix tape that sold out the 300
original copies. After this the band decided to shorten its name to The Cranberries. The band
consisted of vocalist Dolores O Riordan, Noel Hogan as guitarist, Mike Hogan as the bassist and
Fergal Lawler as the drummer. The band s music style fell under the alternative rock genre but is
sometimes referred to as Celtic Rock. A few of the main influences that the band listed are
R.E.M, U2, and Peter Gabriel. Fallowing their initial success the band decided to release another
mix tape that consisted of the early versions of two of their biggest songs. The hype from this
release caught the band a lot of attention which eventually ended up in record labels in a bidding
war over the young band. When the dust settled the band had signed on with island records. The

Aristotle s Types Of Friendship
According to Aristotle, one can experience three different types of friendship. The first type is a
friend who is used for utilitarian purposes. Aristotle, however, quickly dismisses this type. As an
example, Aristotle explains that one could never be friends with wine; while wine is satisfying to
the person drinking the wine, no person ever wishes wine good fortune (Aristotle, 32). In order for
a relationship between two people to be considered a friendship, one must want good things for the
person who they consider their friend and vice versa (Aristotle, 32). Aristotle continues to
describe another type of friendship, which is friendship for pleasure. According to Aristotle,
young adults are most likely to pursue pleasure related friendships, because the young are more
likely to live to please their emotions; they develop friendships and erotic relationships quickly
(Aristotle, 33). Aristotle notes that since young people make decisions based on their emotions,
they are quick to change passions, friendships, and lovers (Aristotle, 33). Although both parties
receive equal pleasure in this type of friendship, Aristotle says that it is not a complete type of
friendship because it is short lasting (Aristotle, 33). Aristotle considers only one type of friendship
to be complete, and that is friendship that is devoted to the other person s virtue. This type of
friendship, Aristotle says, is a friendship that is developed slowly and infrequently; this is the only
type of

Spanish Colonialism on the History of Puerto Rican People...
Spanish Colonialism on the History of Puerto Rican People
Puerto Rico . The name immediately brings to mind images of a beautiful lush tropical island of
enchantment. The name Puerto Rico usually does not conjure the image of Taino Indians or
African slaves, yet these populations have great importance in laying the foundation for the notion
of identity of Puerto Ricans. In contemporary debates of Puerto Rican identity, it is essential to
examine the history of the island to determine the effects of Spanish colonialism on Puerto Rican
identity. As he demonstrates in his article Puerto Rico: the Four Storeyed Country , Jose L.

17). The island s discovery did not lead to a quick occupation, though. Juan Ponce de Leon, in
search of gold, made the first effort to settle on the island in 1508. In the next twenty years, the
Taino population became decimated while forced to labor in prospecting gold, a phase that ended
in this time, succumbing to disease and a breakdown in their social network.
An important implication of this initial occupation of the island by Spaniards is the imposition of
the Spanish language. Because the Taino population could be counted in small amounts and
Spanish had established their presence on the island by instilling their language as the only
accepted language, in the name of Spain, a first storey was constructed in the notion of identity of
the Puerto Rican. The Tainos had been moved out and taken over, the Spanish had moved in and
started to let their culture infiltrate into that of the Taino, and now things were changing.
Because the gold rush on the island lost its surge, the Spanish turned its attention to the agricultural
success they could have with the island. However, as a result of their occupation, they lacked the
labor force to effectively move an agricultural economy. In order to replenish the population and
create a strong labor force, the Spanish took part in what others around Puerto Rico had begun to
do, import cheap labor, namely African slaves. As the profit grew from cash crops sugar emerging

The Impact Of Public Transport On Rural And Sustainable...
4. Financial Analysis
4.1 Introduction
Today the role of public transport is perceived very seriously in terms of urban mobility and
sustainable development, but even though the financial resources available are insufficient.
Acquiring appropriate financing mechanisms is not only imperative for the development of
transport system but also for the holistic growth of urban pockets.
The local government all over the world face financial constraints due to disparity between costs
and revenues. Many urban planners think that revenues cannot be covered from fare box alone.
Indian cities are also facing the same challenges. But due to some funding through JnNURM the
city officials find some relief in procuring buses of high standards like present in developed
countries.
There are two types of costs associated with transport system: one is capital cost and other is
operating cost. Capital cost constitutes of infrastructural support, procurement of buses, and
construction of bus stations. Whereas operating cost includes expenses incurred in fuel,
technological services, salaries to operators of buses, and upgrading buses to better quality with
time. Hence financial aspect takes a big role, because without investment of money, a huge
infrastructural project is not possible. Other dilemma which urban planners face is setting correct
fares in order to attract maximum users and save the system to run into losses.
In this section of my case study, I focus upon the financial burden of

In his paper Minds, brains, and programs , Searle makes an argument against the theory of strong
AI, which states that running a program is sufficient for understanding. This view on strong AI is
very closely connected to the theory of computationalism, which claims that the mind is like a

in response to corresponding input. Searle claims that this belief is unreasonable, and proves it with

Physics of Skydiving Essay
The Physics of Skydiving
What Is Skydiving?
Skydiving is an adrenaline based sport with a fairly simple concept jump from a high place
(usually out of a plane) from several thousand feet above sea level and hope and pray for a safe
landing. This safe landing is often times achieved through the use of a device called a parachute,
which enables the skydiver to reduce his speed to such a point that colliding with the earth will not
be fatal.
This paper will explain a few of the key concepts behind the physics of skydiving. First we will
explore why a skydiver accelerates after he leaps out of the plane before his jump, second we will
try and explain the drag forces effecting the skydiver, and lastly we will attempt to explain how ...

Lets examine a free body diagram of this situation.
One may now clearly see why Joe does not accelerate downward while he remains is in the plane.
The normal force of the plane is acting against the normal force of the gravity acting on Joe s 100
kilogram mass (this is getting close to the maximum weight allowed for skydiving). Since the sum
of the forces in the y, or upward direction, is equal to zero, there is effectively no force acting on
Joe. Thus, the acceleration of Joe must be zero.
Now that Joe understands why he is remaining at a constant altitude, he s ready to take his first
jump. Joe is given the signal to jump from the jump master, and he steps right off the edge of the
plane. Joe is now instantly accelerating in the downward direction. Joe s acceleration will soon
cause him to travel at a rapid rate. But exactly how fast will he be traveling at a certain time?
Without this knowledge, Joe could easily splatter against the surface of the earth. In order to
calculate Joe s velocity at any time, T, we use the following equation:
X = Vi * T + .5 * g * t^2
Where X is the change in distance, Vi is the initial velocity, t is time, and g is the acceleration
due to gravity. Since we know Joe s initial velocity was 0, and the acceleration of gravity is
always 9.8 m/s^2, we can calculate how far Joe has traveled at any point in time. Lets examine the
new free body diagram for this situation.
As you can see, the normal force is now

Gender Bias In To Kill A Mockingbird
The Human Class
Throughout all of history and still to this day, gender bias and discrimination remains a huge
issue in our world. Harper Lee chooses to address gender bias in her powerful and provoking
novel called To Kill a Mockingbird. Gender bias occurs far too often, and Lee clearly holds a true
understanding of the powerful impact it makes on our society as a whole. All through the novel,
any reader could easy see the negative impact that gender bias can do to a community, society and
even nation. Gender bias most efficiently is portrayed by how Jem and Aunt Alexandra relates to
Scout, by the fact that women could not usually work jobs and last of all, the way that Mayella is
portrayed and understood in court.
Gender bias in Maycomb occurs in Scout s own home between her and her own family members.
Jem and Scout would often times fight, like normal siblings, but it was clear that at times, Jem
took it too far by speaking words of hurtful bias towards Scout s gender. After Jem hurts her,
Scout doubts the power and beauty of being a female by stating, I was not so sure, but Jem told
me I was being a girl, that girls always imagined things, that s why other people hated them so,
and if I started behaving like one I could just go off and find some to play with (54). Not only
does conflict arise between Scout and her brother in regard to gender bias, but it also occurs
between Scout and her Aunt Alexandra. Time and time again, Aunt Alexandra scolds Scout for

Research shows that foreign learners have better listening skills and sharper memories than their
monolingual peers (qtd. in NEA Research 3). As the students learn the new vocabulary and
grammar rules of a new language, they develop better memories and good skills that are very
useful in later life when they have more responsibilities in their lives. The monolingual people will
be at a disadvantage when it comes to succeeding in life. Being articulate in foreign tongues can
bridge the gap between cultures, contribute to international diplomacy [and] promote... world peace
(Indian River High School n.p.). When different cultures know the native tongues of other cultures,
it will help communication between them. The two cultures can then understand problems more
easily and resolve them quicker. Also, knowing another language can help countries speak out
their needs and other countries to be more aware of them and make them more able to help. All
people are aware that children are the future of the world, and in order to make good leaders out
of these children, we need to instill a sense of helping others. A way to do this is to give an
understanding of other cultures to students

Elements of Network Security
Introduction
The primary objective of a network security system is to, in a cost effective manner, balance
convenient access to legitimate users and inaccessibility to attackers. In a nutshell, the goal is to
prevent connectivity to anyone intending to cause harm to the network. The harm to which this
paper refers can come in the following forms:
1.Application level security threats, such as e mail viruses and attachments.
2.Threats to network infrastructure devices.
3.Theft of network connectivity services.
4.Unauthorized access from internal and external sources.
5.Denial of service attacks. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
28, 2001). Because this is an automated system, it depends on a mechanical process of
discerning what is good or bad. This at times can lead to false positives or negatives, or the
blocking of a legitimate user and giving access to a system violator. This weakness in the Cisco
IDS requires that an additional form of violation detection be used.
In addition to the IDS, LADWP has a staff of technicians who provide continuous network
monitoring. In addition to keeping track of the alarms detected by the IDS Director Platform,
these technicians also use other tools to keep an eye on network traffic levels, as well as
performing routine vulnerability probing. One key tool used is Lucent s VitalSuite. This tool uses
real time event analysis, which helps to identify network resources that have exceeded acceptable
levels.
To properly use VitalSuite, the technicians establish what they believe to be normal network
activity. This norm is then used as a baseline to help in the identification of any abnormal network
traffic. Once the baseline is established, levels of severity are set. The levels are minor, major and
critical, with critical meaning immediate action is required. The only time the system alarms is
when a critical error is detected. During normal operations, the technicians monitor VitalSuites
display, looking for unusual events. These events can

Room 100 Creative Writing
It was a typical day in the Tatafu household, with my sister and I participating in a match of our
amateur version of basketball, my mother passionately gardening and the rest of the house basically
lounging around. I remember distinctly that the day was the 2nd of February, also known as the
aggravating first day of school. For odd some reason, I had sensed an unsettling feeling that blended
in with our borderline couldn t be bothered behavior as we foregathered in for dinner. The silence
that usually accompanied our dinners had transitioned into a newfound awkward hush, and I knew
immediately that something just wasn t right. I had heard the gossip slipping through the
occasional conversations within the disorderly familymeetings, however I just assumed they were
rumours. They had to be. She lost the baby. I introduce to you, ladies and gentlemen, the day my

Intentional Revolutions Is Organizational Change
Intentional Revolutions is organizational change that requires people to examine and alter the basic
assumptions driving and supporting the present state of their organizational life. It is about change
that asks people to do things in dramatically new and different ways, as opposed to making small
improvements in current practices. The requirements for remaining competitive often include sharp
breaks with past beliefs and practices. There is need for organizations of all kinds to make
discontinuous changes in significant aspects of their being. To make revolution is to attack values

reduce your risk of complications. There are a number of foods that you will need to avoid if
you have diabetes. Below is a list of some of the foods to avoid: High Sugar Foods Cookies,
cakes, pies, candy and soda are among the worst foods that a diabetic can eat. Not only are they
filled with sugar, but they are lacking in essential nutrients. If you have a sweet tooth, then it is
better to opt for fruits, such as apples, pears and oranges. Fruit Juices Many people think that fruit

Analysis Of The Book Colorado Essay
This project was intended to show and persuade the audience to appreciate and enjoy the outdoors
in Colorado. But if not that then the purpose was to help understand the importance of wilderness
to some people and how it affects people s lives for the better. My main rhetorical appeals are,
pathos, logos, and a bit of ethos. The photo essay, the memoir, the film review and the editorial all
appealto pathos more than the others. The instructional essay appealed to logos. The editorial and
the instructional essay also contain pieces of ethos. Also the photo essaygives the entire project an
appeal to ethos because it shows that I ve actually been on many mountains and that helps with
what I say in my other pieces.
Photo Essay:
The purpose of this photo essay is to tell the audience the story of my most recent climb and
show them that being out on the mountain is an amazing experience. I feel that my photos do a
good job with this. With a small amount of editing the photos accurately show what it looks like
to be on a climb. The order of these photos show the grueling physical challenge it is to climb a
14er. Photo after photo of the peak getting closer and closer helps to convey not only the obvious
physical challenge but also the great mental capacity it takes to keep moving up the peak. The one
thing that lacks in the photo essay is some of the captions are more informative instead of telling a
story. The caption on the 6th photo reads The terrain becomes less

The At 18 I Joined The Marines
At 18 I joined the Marines. In boot camp I was introduced to new way of speaking and thinking.
The new language, learned and internalized, was integral to changing my thought practices from
that of a civilian, to that of a Marine. My experiences in the Marines confirm the the idea of
linguistic relativity put forth in the Sapir wharf Hypothesis, and served as my Initiation in the the
Marine Corp s Community of Practice.
During the three months spent in boot camp, recruits rarely spoke. Recruits listened, and learned
an entirely new language. From the moment of arrival on Parris Island, recruits were not allowed
to use pronouns. Usage of I, you, we, or me were strictly forbidden. Inability to use pronouns

Saying, we are preparing for a possible NBC , appears less psychologically frightening that stating
that we were preparing for a nuclear attack.
I am reminded of Carol Cohn s work, Sex and Death in the Rational World of Defense
Intellectuals. Cohn describes the use of technistrategic discourse. The type of discourse, described
in Cohn s work, which served to desensitize, and take the human factor out of otherwise painful
discussions, were tools utilized in Marine Corps. Boot camp furthermore, as I absorbed this new
discourse I too began not just to speak in it but to think in it. I left Boot Camp with a new way of
thinking about the world
I believe this experience confirms the idea of linguistic relativity put forth by the Sapir wharf
Hypothesis. The language, thought and culture of the Marines, all influence each each other. All of
these ideas worked together, in boot camp, to change me from Jennifer the civilian. To PFC
MacDonald, a Marine.
Additionally, Carol Cohn believed that the technistrategic community constituted a community of

Justin Trudeau s Conflict Of Interest Case Study
Prime Minister s Problem: Justin Trudeau s Conflict of Interest
A free private vacation to the Bahamas with your family and friends, sounds almost too good to be
true, Canada s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently found this out first hand. After returning
from his luxurious holiday on Aga Khan s private Bahamas island in January 2017, the media
outlets were booming with many articles criticizing his actions and divulging the public with the
Conflict of Interest Act. One passage in particular had many people in a frenzy, Rule 12 in the Act
states, No minister of the Crown, minister of state or parliamentary secretary, no member of his or

It certainly could. However, the Prime Minister has a vast amount of time and opportunity to
apologize and make up for a simple avoidable mistake. In addition, Trudeau now has the
information and knowledge to prevent making related mistakes in the future. Now, it is worth
noting that this report is not in any way questioning Justin Trudeau s Prime Ministerial ability or
saying he should not be the Prime Minister of Canada; however, what should be captured is the
potential severity that a conflict of interest issue can cause. Because Justin Trudeau and Aga Khan
have association, this creates the perfect scenario for political bribery, such as a free vacation, in
exchange for future political consideration. Justin Trudeau must recognize his position as Prime
Minister of Canada and take responsibility and establish a boundary between his role as Prime
Minister and his personal life outside Parliament Hill. Justin Trudeau is the Prime Minister of
Canada twenty four hours a day and everywhere he goes. It is imperative he separates his
personal life from his responsibilities as Prime Minister. Even if his friends and colleagues want to

Underage Drinking Persuasive Speech
If you were ever given the chance to drink underage, or even do illegal drugs, would you take the

consequences that would follow? As many of us know, alcohol and drug usage is prevalent
among teens, especially in students among Mason City High School. When interviewing
Officer Trask, who has worked for the Mason City Police Department for thirteen years, it is safe
to say that one must be willing to sacrifice one s freedom if they decide to partake in such
activities. If you are under the age of 21 for drinking, you are considered a juvenile under law for
alcohol consumption. For a Juvenile, your BAC, which stands for blood alcohol consumption,

Online Marketing Efforts And Increase Roi
Web analytics is the objective tracking, collection, measurement, reporting, and analysis of
quantitative Internet data to optimize websites and web marketing initiatives. The Web Analytics
Association (WAA) defines Web analytics as the measurement, collection, analysis, and reporting
of Internet data for the purposes of understanding and optimizing Web usage. Web analysts can
reign in data from big to good, and make sense of it all. They sort the real time data into good
metrics, useful metrics. They organize it into reports and analyze those reports to find insights to
improve their online marketing efforts and increase ROI. Web analytics can lead to a deeper
understanding of your target audience. Tracking and analyzing the behavior of consumer traffic on
your website paints a more insightful picture of how to build relationships with your audience. If
you have solid, accurate data to back up your strategies and decisions, then your chances of
creating and executing successful marketing campaigns increase exponentially. Web analytics is
the study of visitor, navigation, and traffic patterns to determine the success of a given web site.
Focusing only on the amount of traffic might only be helpful in evaluating your bandwidth usage
and server s capabilities, which is not its only purpose. Web analytics focuses on in depth

Analysis Of Soltice And Ransom By Tracy K. Smith
In her collection of poetry Life on Mars, Tracy K. Smith brings real world problems into focus
with Solstice and Ransom . The main idea in Solstice is the geese that forced the Hudson River
plane crash in New York, while Smith writes of the Somalian pirates and sea pollution in
Ransom . However, these are just the literal meanings behind the two poems that have deeper
meanings relating to the state of the world and how humans are playing a role in it, politically
and physically. There is a constant struggle in the poems Solstice and Ransom that where there
is always an underdog, whether it be protesters attempting to make a change or Somalian pirates
fighting back because their fishing waters have been corrupted. A main connection between
these poems include their connection to the time period that Tracy K. Smith s father passed
away towards the end of 2008. Because of how emotional and tragic this time period was to
Smith, she holds onto the shreds of hope she had during that time, including two major events
portrayed in the poems. The literal meaning behind the poem Solstice is the geese that caused
flights to be disrupted at the JFK airport. These geese also flew into pilot Chesley Sully
Sullenberger and killed all engine power, making him perform a miracle crash landing into the
Hudson river. Ransom captures the story of Somalian pirates and why they have naturally been
forced into hijacking ships to make a living. The Maersk Alabama hijacking in early

damage occurred in New Orleans. With the city mostly under sea level this presented much of
the problem. The majority of the city was flooded. More than $200 billion dollars in damages
were estimated. The loss of life, property, and business were devastating on New Orleans. This
was the most costly of all natural disasters in the United States of America in my lifetime. This
natural disaster disturbed the economic system of New Orleans, the labor markets around the
U.S., and the individual businesses in New Orleans. The trending effect was a loss of 100,000

The storm helped to crush New Orleans and put a devastating effect on the economy of the U.S.

Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold

Sociological:
The un expose to the information and knowledge has made the students unaware about the
importance of the freedom of speech. Thus influence the interaction among them in their daily life.
Dutton s 2004 say: This publication argues for a fresh approach that moves beyond the limitations
of the information society concept that has been the most common way of signifying the broad,
interconnected range of social and economic changes tied to ICTs.
Rethinking access in the way proposed here opens a broader understanding of the term access in
relation to ICTs than the traditional definition that referred primarily to physical access to ICT
infrastructures, systems, and devices. It also widens the object of that access from information, as
implied by the term information society , to include people, services, and technologies. (p. 22)
The restriction to the access of information has made the student unaware about the right to the
freedom of speech and information. Thus, they will not make this as one of the topics of
conversation in their daily life interactions.

I could further my learning in saying a few minimal encourages like: go on, tell me more, right

my strengths are: Paraphrasing, which reflects the essentials of the speaker s message and gives

Participatory Culture Through The Media
Old media like broadcasting, print, and film created a consumer culture in the public. Participants
would consume the media they could find, and that was the extent of their engagement with a piece
of media. But during the digital age, participatory culture has exploded. Participatory culture is a
concept coined by Henry Jenkins where consumers take part in both the consumption and the
production of media. The advent of computers facilitates a low barrier of entry for creation of
digital media and its propagation. With the availability of personal computers and consumer level
software to manipulate media as well as the popularity of the internetto spread content, fans have
become more engaged with the media they consume. In turn, participants can create forms of that
media that comment and expand upon the original content. Participants who used to only consume
media now have the avenues to become producers of media. In this essay, I will explore
participatory culture through the lense of Lev Manovichs Five Principles of New Media: Numerical
Representation, Modularity, Automation, Variability, and Transcoding.
The first of Manovich s principles is Numerical Representation. A piece of new media can be
represented by discrete numbers. For example, an image file is a collection of numbers
describing the color of each pixel in the image. A game is a piece of software compiled to 1 s and
0 s that respond and react to input from the user. Anything in digital form is at its based

Throughout The Past Century, China Has Powered Through
Throughout the past century, China has powered through the obstacles of famine, unrest, economic
dislocation, and enormous construction costs to continue its rapid development. Now a preeminent
world power, China faces yet another development challenge: climate change. Current and past
trends suggest that Chinawill treat this problem as it has the other issues, ignoring damage to public
welfare while maintaining an obsessive fixation on projecting an image of modernity. The one
potential saving grace would be a shift in global attitudes about modernity; if the world begins to

Compared to the death of 200 million during the Great Leap Forward, the visible climate issues
like flooding and air pollution feel tolerable. As Chinese industry develops, cities are growing with
barely a pause to consider their toll on the environment, much less the future impact of global
warming. The lack of concern for visible, short term issues spells doubt on China s ability to
handle longer term climate issues like rising sea levels.
Nowhere is the lack of concern for short term issues more pronounced than in the Pearl River Delta,
where the growing metropolises of Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Dongguan lie. The rising South
China Sea and the overstressed Pearl River network neighboring the cities lie just a meter or so
below much of the region s industrial center. Despite the extreme danger posed by the rising waters
(tens of thousands of citizens lost their homes during flooding in Guangzhou), the Chinese
government has continued development and remained mum on the issues. The authorities would
rather show off the region s shiny new office towers and airports than fix costly sewers that could
help with flooding. According to some in the city, people here still focus on the economic side of
things, similarly ignoring climatic dangers. Just like in the previous century, wilful ignorance of
consequences during the pursuit of modernization pervades Chinese society: This became our idea

What is your opinion on the topic after reading/viewing the selection? Do you agree or disagree

I watched The Story of Bottled Water . This video s main goal is to persuade you not to buy
bottled water. The producers of the video gave examples showing a bad light on bottled water. One
example highlighted how water bottles were sitting in landfills in India and polluting the world. I
agree with the fact about how it is bad that the bottles are causing pollution. At another point in the
video they said that being seen drinking out of a bottle of water was getting to the same level as
being seen smoking while pregnant. I disagree with that statement. I think that is very extreme and
just not true. My opinion on this topic after watching the video is that the problem is not the bottles
of water and their companies, it is the factories in India that are not actually recycling the bottles.

the early Christian church who denounced Gnosticismfor heresy and claimed that it was pseudo
way to Christianity. Up until the 1900 s, very little was known about the precise beliefs of
Gnosticism, then this changed with the discovery of the Nag Hammadi works which may have
been written by Valentinus. Gnosticism is a more distinct religion than it... Show more content on

Their idea of salvation is that God sent a spiritual redeemer to teach those humans that will listen
where their true home is and that they can obtain their salvation through self knowledge. Gnostics
held to the idea that Jesus was the spiritual redeemer sent from God to teach humans about their
true home. However they did not believe as Christians do that Jesus was the incarnate of God
because they believed that all material is evil and that God could not take on the form of a human
who died and rose bodily. To justify that Jesus was indeed their spiritual redeemer they claimed
that whoever entered Jesus at his baptism left him before his death on the cross. So while Gnostics
identify themselves as Christians many of their doctrines are not biblically based.
Scholars have not found sufficient proof, but tradition holds that Simon Magus and Cerinthus were
the founders of the Gnostic faith. Tradition also holds that Paul on his second missionary journey
encountered Simon and his beliefs of Gnosticism. Later we will discuss Paul s views of
Gnosticism. Cerinthus was a Jewish Gnostic from Asia Minor who lived around 100 A.D.
Gnosticism was perhaps the most well known in Alexandria because from there haled Valentinus
most famous of all Alexandrian Gnostics. Valentinus wrote his Letter to Rheginos in order to clarify
the standpoint of Gnostics in regards to redemption and that freeing of the spirit comes not by

The Hunger Games By Suzanne Collin
Suzanne Collin s Hunger Games seems to be about a dystopian society struggle to become a
utopia. However, when the readers read further in to the book or watches the movie one can see that
is about all the characters that make use human.
As human, we feel the need to build an ethical framework based on our needs for authority rather
than tradition. The Capitol in the Hunger Games exploits human needs to keep authority in place.
After rising seas and poverty consumed much of the land, the Capitol, which was least affective
had the superiority over the other district. The capitol residents lived in luxury while the
surrounding districts are poor and subdued. The citizens of the Capitol brutally abuse the twelve
districts of Panem one of the country that was left dried out by the sea, all in flavor of giving
themselves a high standard of living while intentionally keeping the twelve district in a state of
abject poverty. One way the Capitol tried to strengthen their authority is by inventing the annual
hunger games were in each district of Panem two children are reaped to fight until their death for
the amusement of Capitol citizens. The citizens in Panem, because they are poor and the Capitol
citizens has the authority over them they have no choice but to unwilling part take in this game.
The movie and the book show how much the Capitol limits their ability to empathize with the less
fortunate city. Since recently there was a research that shows the upper class

Essay on Israel s Controversy
Israel is a high controversial state that all have differing opinions on. There are many things that
make Israel a hot topic. In order to discover why Israel is so controversial, this paper will delve
into the creation of Israel, and how it affects the area around it. Israel was created on November 29,
1947 by the United Nations in Resolution 181. Resolution 181, also known as the Partition
Resolution, declared that the territory of Palestinewould be divided into two separate states, one
Jewish and one Arab, when the British Palestine mandate expired in May 1948. However, the city
of Jerusalem was declared an independent city state, and would be protected by the United Nations
( Creation of Israel). There are two main reasons why... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Jews lived had immigrated to Palestine after World War II and the Holocaust seeking
protection. Many moved there for religious reasons, but others moved their with the goal of
creating a Zionist state there. These immigrants added to the pressure that was being put on the
international community to form a Jewish state because they were buying up Palestine with the
goal of moving Jews there. This was a problem because no one could prevent them from doing it.
Finally, many countries were in support of a Jewish state in Palestine because of the Holocaust.
All countries felt bad for the Jewish population of the world after the Holocaust, and they saw a
Jewish state as a way to seek forgiveness from the Jews. There are many problems that stem from
Israel being where it is. One problem is that three major world religions stake claim to Palestine
as their holy land. This is a problem because each religion claims they own it, and that it was
bestowed upon them in their holy text. The problem stems from each religious text specifically
outlying the land they deserve. In the Old Testament of the Christian Bible, Genesis 15:18 states,
on that day The Lord made a covenant with Abraham, saying, To your descendants I have given
this land, From the river of Egypt as far as the great river, the river Euphrates ( Genesis 15:18 ).
Since Muslims and Jews consider themselves to be People of the Book, and both their founders

The Evolution Of The Internet Radio
The evolution of music has taken exponential routes into our homes. The vast market for the
consumers who always like to have music playing have a variety of options to choose from. There
is the origin company of Pandora that has spearheaded the entire industry, as well as Spotify who
has reimagined the internet radiogenre. Spotify is one of the top companies in today s society,
including its Premium version which offers discounts to students. Apple Music and Tidal are
companies with strong backgrounds, but are actually struggling to manifest some success in their
revenues. SoundCloud is a newer and more diverse music streaming site, since it allows the
freedom of any individual to upload their own music to the world and allowing anyone... Show

In this report, we examine the market for streaming music through the internet. I discuss five
successful companies and possible segments for each of them that solidify the growing market
for internet radio. Specifically, the customer segment of females who are teens to their early 20
s who are mid to high class college students would be targeted from Spotify. The beginnings of
the new service have started less than a decade ago but has already been a huge factor of how
people listen to their music. Instead of buying physical, hard copies of an artist s album, people
either buy the song digitally or now use a specific software that will allow them to stream and
listen to any song they want for free. The use of applications on smartphones also aid in this world
wide domination of internet radio. Normally, the trial versions of this software will include
advertisements by companies who pay the streaming music companies. If someone has an aversion
to all of the commercials, there is a monthly payment subscription where no advertisements will
interrupt the streaming of their music. One of the most powerful forms of art and expression has
gone digital. There is no secret that music can influence millions. The music industry has always
contributed to society s biggest icons and created revenues that exceed lottery numbers. Key
players of this new wave of streaming music would be Spotify, Pandora, Apple Music, SoundCloud,
and Tidal. These five

Secondhand Smoking Persuasive Speech
It is a widely accepted fact that secondhand smoking is hazardous, and we have no real solutions.
Luckily, I have an idea to help solve this problem, but first I would like to go over some of the
effects of secondhand smoking. First is that secondhand smoking can cause lung cancer. Second is
that it can cause severe heart disease. Finally, third secondhand smokingis fatal to children. Now
that I have told you some of the dangerous effects I feel ready to share my idea. I, would like to
propose that the state of Utah pass a law requiring public areas such as parks or zoos to have
designated smoking areas so that the risk of secondhand smoking is greatly decreased. I believe
that if you pass this law, it will make a difference.
To begin with, I feel that making designated smoking areas in most public areas would be a good
idea because secondhand smoking greatly increases the chance of lung cancer. Cancer Research UK
says Passive smoking can increase a nonsmoker s risk of getting lung cancer by a quarter . This
means that secondhand smoking has a twenty five percent chance of ... Show more content on

Many deaths from heart diseases are caused by secondhand smoking. The center for Disease
Control and Prevention says that Since 1964, approximately 2,500,000 nonsmokers have died
from health problems caused by exposure to secondhand smoke. . This means that about 47,170
people died per year due to health problems created by secondhand smoking. Secondhand
smoking causes many deaths in the United States. WebMD says Every year in the U.S.,
secondhand smoke causes about 34,000 deaths from heart disease and 7,300 deaths from lung
cancer . This means that about sixty seven percent of the people who died annually were in the
United States. While there are many deaths involved with heart disease which is the result of

HEY GUYS! GUYS! WE GOT TO TALK ABOUT 284! I just read it and I got a lot to talk about!
Because seriously, this is quite possibly one of the most hilarious and incompetent stories I ve
ever seen. Yes, Archie fans, I mean that. I knew this comic was going to be a mess after reading
the summary for this, but this is ridiculous and we got to talk about everything in this, because
train wrecks like this don t happen often. This issues fails in some of the most basic ways
possible that if I didn t know better, I would swear this is a parody. Now I usually do analysis
posts where I talk about overall problems, but this is something that needs to be experienced so
we are going to talk about this scene by scene to we can enjoy this massive 5 car pileup. But
before we can do that we need to talk about the first car to start this mess for a second, 283. Now
I do plan to talk about 283 in more detail as it shows a lot of the problems of this comic when it
comes to pacing and structure, but it s relevant to 284 as it is a massive setup for it. Not just that
it is prepping for the following for issues, it s also an issue that sets up the punchline. The entire
issue is dedicated to Sally, Sonic and Chip detailing what their plan is. A common clichГ©... Show

Now it completely misses the point of doing this that instead of it trying to show the weaknesses
of the characters or to show how they weren t up to the task, this has things bad things happen
because Flynn wanted bad things to happen. But that could at least be ok, it is was willing to
commit to the tragedy and kept the drama intact. This comic, on the other hand, keep doing the
dumbest things to undermine its own drama. Not only in scenes like Germal getting dragged off

In the town of Jefferson, simply saying the name Grierson guaranteed to make all ears within hearing range perk up in an effort to gather new information about the monumental recluse. • 6. Louisiana State Politics Analysis Louisiana State Politics John Kenneth Galbraith once said Nothing is so admirable in politics as a short memory. While in many ways this is an accurate statement within the political realm of the United States there are many times that politics is greatly affected by the memories of the past. This is especially true of the Southern United States. The South has its own perspective and history that impacts the political environment and unities the region unlike anywhere else in the United States. However, as united as the South has been on the national level there are vast differences to be found on the state level. This lingering distrust and backlash against Northern control and the recently freed slaves is one of, it not the most, pivotal factor in the formation of the South as distinct political arena with its own views, rules, voting habits, and culture. Many Southerners felt that to face the terms that congress had demanded for reentry into the Union were tantamount to submission, degrading, and invited further demands and to bow before them was to lose the honor of the South. In face of this mentality the North preceded to vote in the Reconstruction acts, import political supporters from the North, and enforce military control in the Southern states. These outsiders were known as scalawags and the enforced Republican rule lead to the now freed slaves being vilified and equivocated with leading the Republican Party. The occurrences of violence against the newly freed slaves was more endemic than ever before. A reactionary faction arose in Louisiana that eventually resulted in its government being liquidated and the state placed into a military district with Texas and under the direction of Union General Sheridan. This resulted in a new state constitution which was ratified in 1868. The constitution that emerged provided for equal citizenship, the black franchise, equal public accommodations, and public education. However, this new government under military control was heavily supported by the African American Republican vote and faced extreme opposition by the Redeemers and paramilitary groups such as the Ku Klux Klan. By 1874 the support of Reconstruction was crumbling in the face of the opposition of the South and the weariness of the North. Women play a huge role in the Arthurian legends and the most influential woman is Queen Guinevere. The legend of Queen Guinevere evolves through time with the evolution of women in society. While gaining more power in society, women are portrayed as more independent and more intelligent, therefore, the various portrayals of Queen Guinevereare written to respect the time period and the role of women during the era. During the 1600 s, women were viewed as inferior to men and were treated unequally. Sara Teasdale s poem Guenevere is an example of a text that shows remorse for Queen Guinevere, rather than depicting her as just an unfaithful wife and a treacherous queen. In this text, Queen Guinevere is seen as a strong political figure who cares about the respect of her people and her king. Her love for Sir Lancelot takes away her crown and her respect from others, her affair has unqueened [her] forevermore and she soon realizes that her love for Lancelot grows bitter that was once so sweet (Teasdale 44, 65). The poem illustrates the doubt in her decision to love Lancelot and commit adultery despite how much she wants to be with him. This depiction is not seen in early text which means that the modern world has influenced the writer to reveal the powerful political figure in Queen Guinevere. This difference in the text means that while society has grown to accept women, the legend has transformed into a text that favors women. The modern society has also learned to understand the mind of a woman in power and the decisions she makes for herself. She is self conscious about the decision to pursue a relationship with Sir Lancelot, and in the end her decision causes the downfall of Camelot and her king. In the poem, Guinevere states I was a queen, and I have lost my crown; A wife, and I have broken all my vows . . . There is no other havoc left to do (Teasdale 1 4). Teasdale wants ... • 13. Aristotle s Types Of Friendship According to Aristotle, one can experience three different types of friendship. The first type is a friend who is used for utilitarian purposes. Aristotle, however, quickly dismisses this type. As an example, Aristotle explains that one could never be friends with wine; while wine is satisfying to the person drinking the wine, no person ever wishes wine good fortune (Aristotle, 32). In order for a relationship between two people to be considered a friendship, one must want good things for the person who they consider their friend and vice versa (Aristotle, 32). Aristotle continues to describe another type of friendship, which is friendship for pleasure. According to Aristotle, young adults are most likely to pursue pleasure related friendships, because the young are more likely to live to please their emotions; they develop friendships and erotic relationships quickly (Aristotle, 33). Aristotle notes that since young people make decisions based on their emotions, they are quick to change passions, friendships, and lovers (Aristotle, 33). Although both parties receive equal pleasure in this type of friendship, Aristotle says that it is not a complete type of friendship because it is short lasting (Aristotle, 33). Aristotle considers only one type of friendship to be complete, and that is friendship that is devoted to the other person s virtue. This type of friendship, Aristotle says, is a friendship that is developed slowly and infrequently; this is the only type of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In contemporary debates of Puerto Rican identity, it is essential to examine the history of the island to determine the effects of Spanish colonialism on Puerto Rican identity. Juan Ponce de Leon, in search of gold, made the first effort to settle on the island in 1508. In the next twenty years, the Taino population became decimated while forced to labor in prospecting gold, a phase that ended in this time, succumbing to disease and a breakdown in their social network. An important implication of this initial occupation of the island by Spaniards is the imposition of the Spanish language. Because the Taino population could be counted in small amounts and Spanish had established their presence on the island by instilling their language as the only accepted language, in the name of Spain, a first storey was constructed in the notion of identity of the Puerto Rican. The Tainos had been moved out and taken over, the Spanish had moved in and started to let their culture infiltrate into that of the Taino, and now things were changing. Because the gold rush on the island lost its surge, the Spanish turned its attention to the agricultural success they could have with the island. However, as a result of their occupation, they lacked the labor force to effectively move an agricultural economy. Financial Analysis 4.1 Introduction Today the role of public transport is perceived very seriously in terms of urban mobility and sustainable development, but even though the financial resources available are insufficient. Acquiring appropriate financing mechanisms is not only imperative for the development of transport system but also for the holistic growth of urban pockets. The local government all over the world face financial constraints due to disparity between costs and revenues. Many urban planners think that revenues cannot be covered from fare box alone. Indian cities are also facing the same challenges. But due to some funding through JnNURM the city officials find some relief in procuring buses of high standards like present in developed countries. There are two types of costs associated with transport system: one is capital cost and other is operating cost. Capital cost constitutes of infrastructural support, procurement of buses, and construction of bus stations. Whereas operating cost includes expenses incurred in fuel, technological services, salaries to operators of buses, and upgrading buses to better quality with time. Hence financial aspect takes a big role, because without investment of money, a huge infrastructural project is not possible. Other dilemma which urban planners face is setting correct fares in order to attract maximum users and save the system to run into losses. Skydiving is an adrenaline based sport with a fairly simple concept jump from a high place (usually out of a plane) from several thousand feet above sea level and hope and pray for a safe landing. This safe landing is often times achieved through the use of a device called a parachute, which enables the skydiver to reduce his speed to such a point that colliding with the earth will not be fatal. This paper will explain a few of the key concepts behind the physics of skydiving. First we will explore why a skydiver accelerates after he leaps out of the plane before his jump, second we will try and explain the drag forces effecting the skydiver, and lastly we will attempt to explain how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lets examine a free body diagram of this situation. One may now clearly see why Joe does not accelerate downward while he remains is in the plane. The normal force of the plane is acting against the normal force of the gravity acting on Joe s 100 kilogram mass (this is getting close to the maximum weight allowed for skydiving). Since the sum of the forces in the y, or upward direction, is equal to zero, there is effectively no force acting on Joe. Thus, the acceleration of Joe must be zero. Now that Joe understands why he is remaining at a constant altitude, he s ready to take his first jump. Joe is given the signal to jump from the jump master, and he steps right off the edge of the plane. Joe is now instantly accelerating in the downward direction. Joe s acceleration will soon cause him to travel at a rapid rate. But exactly how fast will he be traveling at a certain time? Without this knowledge, Joe could easily splatter against the surface of the earth. In order to calculate Joe s velocity at any time, T, we use the following equation: X = Vi * T + .5 * g * t^2 Where X is the change in distance, Vi is the initial velocity, t is time, and g is the acceleration due to gravity. Since we know Joe s initial velocity was 0, and the acceleration of gravity is always 9.8 m/s^2, we can calculate how far Joe has traveled at any point in time. Because Justin Trudeau and Aga Khan have association, this creates the perfect scenario for political bribery, such as a free vacation, in exchange for future political consideration. The main idea in Solstice is the geese that forced the Hudson River plane crash in New York, while Smith writes of the Somalian pirates and sea pollution in Ransom . However, these are just the literal meanings behind the two poems that have deeper meanings relating to the state of the world and how humans are playing a role in it, politically and physically. There is a constant struggle in the poems Solstice and Ransom that where there is always an underdog, whether it be protesters attempting to make a change or Somalian pirates fighting back because their fishing waters have been corrupted. A main connection between these poems include their connection to the time period that Tracy K. Smith s father passed away towards the end of 2008. Because of how emotional and tragic this time period was to Smith, she holds onto the shreds of hope she had during that time, including two major events portrayed in the poems. The literal meaning behind the poem Solstice is the geese that caused flights to be disrupted at the JFK airport. These geese also flew into pilot Chesley Sully Sullenberger and killed all engine power, making him perform a miracle crash landing into the Hudson river. Participants would consume the media they could find, and that was the extent of their engagement with a piece of media. But during the digital age, participatory culture has exploded. Participatory culture is a concept coined by Henry Jenkins where consumers take part in both the consumption and the production of media. The advent of computers facilitates a low barrier of entry for creation of digital media and its propagation. With the availability of personal computers and consumer level software to manipulate media as well as the popularity of the internetto spread content, fans have become more engaged with the media they consume. In turn, participants can create forms of that media that comment and expand upon the original content. Participants who used to only consume media now have the avenues to become producers of media. In this essay, I will explore participatory culture through the lense of Lev Manovichs Five Principles of New Media: Numerical Representation, Modularity, Automation, Variability, and Transcoding. The first of Manovich s principles is Numerical Representation. A piece of new media can be represented by discrete numbers. For example, an image file is a collection of numbers describing the color of each pixel in the image. Current and past trends suggest that Chinawill treat this problem as it has the other issues, ignoring damage to public welfare while maintaining an obsessive fixation on projecting an image of modernity. As Chinese industry develops, cities are growing with barely a pause to consider their toll on the environment, much less the future impact of global warming. The lack of concern for visible, short term issues spells doubt on China s ability to handle longer term climate issues like rising sea levels. Nowhere is the lack of concern for short term issues more pronounced than in the Pearl River Delta, where the growing metropolises of Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Dongguan lie. The rising South China Sea and the overstressed Pearl River network neighboring the cities lie just a meter or so below much of the region s industrial center. Despite the extreme danger posed by the rising waters (tens of thousands of citizens lost their homes during flooding in Guangzhou), the Chinese government has continued development and remained mum on the issues.
